Abstract:
Two Rokumi-jio-gan-containing prescriptions (Hachimi-jio-gan and Bakumi-jio-gan) were selected to examine their actions in nephrectomized rats. Each prescription was given orally to rats for 10 weeks after the excision of five-sixths of their kidney volumes, and its effect was compared with non-nephrectomized and normal rats. Rats given Hachimi-jio-gan and Bakumi-jio-gan showed an improvement of renal functional parameters such as serum urea nitrogen, creatinine, creatinine clearance, and urinary protein. The nephrectomized rats exhibited the up-regulation of nicotinamide adenine dinucleotide phosphate oxidase subunits, c-Jun N-terminal kinase (JNK), phosphor-JNK, c-Jun, transforming growth factor-β1, nuclear factor-kappa B, cyclooxygenase-2, inducible nitric oxide synthase, monocyte chemotactic protein-1, intracellular adhesion molecule-1, Bax, cytochromec, and caspase-3, and down-regulation of NF-E2-related factor 2, heme oxygenase-1, and survivin; however, Bakumi-jio-gan administration acts as a regulator in inflammatory reactions caused by oxidative stress in renal failure. Moreover, the JNK pathway and apoptosis-related protein expressions, Bax, caspase-3, and survivin, were ameliorated to the normal levels by Hachimi-jio-gan administration. The development of renal lesions, glomerular sclerosis, tubulointerstitial damage, and arteriolar sclerotic lesions, estimated by histopathological evaluation and scoring, was strong in the groups administered Hachimi-jio-gan rather than Bakumi-jio-gan. This study suggests that Rokumi-jio-gan-containing prescriptions play a protective role in the progression of renal failure.

Abstract:
To determine the possibility of new applications of Oriental medicines, we examined the changes in water metabolism of mice that underwent microgravity and were treated with Kampo medicines. Male ICR mice were used in this experiment. Eight extracts of Kampo herbal medicines were dissolved in water and added to the drinking water administered to mice at 1 g/kg body weight for two days. The microgravity experiment was performed at the Japan Microgravity Center. We used a drop-shaft type microgravity experimental system with a free fall of 490 m. Before the drop, 7 ml of physiological saline was injected intraperitoneally. Under fasting and dehydration, body weights were measured and loss of body weight was calculated as urine. Blood samples were collected 24 hours after the microgravity experiment, and the antidiuretic hormone (ADH) in plasma related to water metabolism was measured by the radioimmunoassay (RIA) method. Heat shock protein in the spleen was measured by the enzyme-linked immunosolvent assay (ELISA) method. In the Hachimi-jio-gan and Hochu-ekki-to groups in microgravity, a decrease of urine was observed, which significantly suppressed the increase of ADH due to microgravity. Hachimi-jio-gan reduced the content of heat shock protein (HSP) 70 in the spleen. It is suggested that Hachimi-jio-gan and Hochu-ekki-to could be used as water metabolism adjustment reagents in a space environment. Furthermore, it is suggested that Hachimi-jio-gan could ease the stresses caused by microgravity. The physiological changes resulting from a microgravity environment are serious problems for space flight. Pre-treatment with Kampo medicines is expected to prevent, ease and treat these problems.

Abstract:
We investigated whether the Chinese herbal remedy, Hachimi-jio-gan extract, attenuates the renal injury seen in salt-induced hypertension in Dahl salt-sensitive (Dahl S) rats. Administration of this extract for 5 weeks dose-dependently decreased systolic blood pressure in Dahl S rats fed with a high-salt (2% NaCI) diet. This blood pressure reduction was associated with a decrease in cardiac mass and in thickness of the aortic wall. Urinary excretion of prostaglandin E2 was increased and glomerular filtration rate was improved with this treatment. Glomerulosclerosis and arterial injury in the kidney were morphologically improved. These data suggest that Hachimi-jio-gan extract exhibits an antihypertensive effect, which is associated with partial resolution of renal injury in salt-induced hypertension.

Abstract:
Busulfan is used as a chemotherapeutic drug to treat childhood and adult chronic myelogenous leukemia, and as an immunosuppressive agent before bone marrow transplantation. A key side effect of busulfan is the alteration of male reproductive function. Infertility caused by anti-cancer treatments has become a significant concern, but there are currently limited treatments for this condition. Recently, we demonstrated that Gosha-jinki-gan, a traditional Japanese medicine, completely reversed the spermatogenesis defects caused by cancer treatment in mice. Hochu-ekki-to and Hachimi-jio-gan are commonly used to treat male infertility, and Hachimi-jio-gan shares herbal ingredients with Gosha-jinki-gan. Therefore, in the present study, we administered Hachimi-jio-gan and Hochu-ekki-to alone or in combination to mice with severe aspermatogenesis caused by busulfan treatment. We performed testis weight measurements, quantitative histological assessments of the testes and the epididymis, and evaluated sperm counts and morphology. We also assessed the expression of immune mediators and macrophage markers. Treatment with a combination of both the medicines significantly reduced busulfan-induced testicular toxicity when compared to the lone treatment with either medicine. We demonstrated that treatment efficacy was related to a differential impact on testicular inflammation, and that the synergistic effect of co-administration completely reversed the busulfan-induced damage to the reproductive functions.

Abstract:
Along with the global telecom sector, the Indian telecom market has evolved over the past three decades. From the first generation technology in the 1990s, the telecom industry in India offered 4G services in 2012. From microwave technology it has moved into underground fibre optic cables, enhancing the quality and variety of telecom services. Ahead of several emerging markets, subscriber demand in India shifted to data from voice telephony. Subscriber base grew substantially, but average revenue per user (ARPU) has fallen significantly. Intense competition has led to consolidation in the industry. The mobile services faced market disruption from Reliance Jio (R-Jio). The latter launched a strategy of predatory pricing resulting in data wars. R-Jio’s network was based on 4G technology, while other competitors were still offering 2G- and 3G-based services. In comparison to competitors, R-Jio laid more fibre optic cables. Therefore, it could effortlessly upgrade the services offerings to 5G and other future technologies, which competitors could not match so they experienced fall in profits or outright losses. R-Jio also moved into providing fibre-to-the-home technology accompanied with ultra-high-speed internet that could provide a host of entertainment features. As a virtual knee-jerk reaction to the severity of the competitive challenge facing it, Vodafone initiated merger talks with Idea Cellular and soon achieved its culmination. This merger resulted in the largest telecom service company in India. However, Vodafone Idea Ltd.’s balance sheet was over leveraged, rendering it incapable of playing the price cutting game. Besides, it was unclear if it would be able to build the formidable infrastructure required to invest in 5G spectrum, offer superior content as well as smart devices. It soon became obvious that the merger could catapult Vodafone to the pole position in the industry but staying and flourishing there would require it to be more resourceful, imaginative and aggressive. Balesh Sharma, the CEO of Vodafone-Idea Ltd., and his top management team had to respond to the challenges the company was facing and emerge successful.

Subject area Marketing Management, Marketing Strategy and Marketing Communication. Study level/applicability The case is targeted at students of post-graduation and under-graduation programs in Business Administration, specializing in Marketing Management or Marketing Strategy. Case overview Mukesh Ambani’s announcement about the launching of Reliance Jio at the 41st Annual General Meeting (AGM) of Reliance Industries Limited (RIL) in June 2015 sent shock waves in the telecom industry. Everyone, including the customers, competitors and the entire telecom industry, was excited to know whether Reliance Jio would be able to make a dent or fizzle out like a weak firecracker. Was it time for the top players to be worried and pull their socks up or will it be an inconsequential ripple in the ocean? Mukesh Ambani saw the telecom sector from a new viewpoint and proposed a complete set of solution in the form of Reliance Jio SIM card that addressed the different needs of customers through various applications. This has spread rumors of a merger between Idea and Vodafone in India, which can have a huge impact on Reliance Jio and the telecom sector in general. The profitability indicator that was earlier determined as the average revenue per user (ARPU) will continue to dominate. The companies will be scrambling to find different ways to increase the ARPU to maximize the returns. This would also lead to a downsize in the cost in such a way that their operations do not suffer and profitability is also not negatively affected. Expected learning outcomes To better understand the entry strategy of firms in highly volatile business situations. To know about the competitors and their contribution to the operational and strategic changes of a new entrant. To understand the proceedings associated with marketing communication for establishing a product in a highly competitive market. To know about the impact of joining hands with the competitors on a new entrant. Supplementary materials Teaching notes are available for educators only. Abstract:
Subject area Marketing, Pricing, Strategic marketing. Study level/applicability The case is developed for an MBA-level program. Case overview In May 2017, the telecom industry in India witnessed an intense price war over 4G (fourth generation) data prices. Gopal Vittal, CEO of Bharti Airtel was exploring various options on how best to respond to the situation. He had to take a final call regarding Bharti Airtel’s marketing team’s counter move to tackle this price war by Jio – should Bharti Airtel ignore it, accommodate it or retaliate with even lower prices? Bharti Airtel strongly believed that Jio pricing structure had violated “fair pricing” norms, and its pricing was anti-competitive. It had filed a case with the Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI) and the Competition Commission of India (CCI) to restrain Jio from further giving “free” promotional offers and penalize it for it. Could the legal recourse by Bharti Airtel dampen Jio’s consistent subscriber growth rate? Expected learning outcomes The case provides the students with an insight into how the competition focused on pricing happens in the telecom industry. The pricing war affects the profit margin of all competing companies. It changes the customer reference point for evaluating the competing products and services. The students would also learn practical applications of positive-sum pricing, pricing war, fair pricing and legal aspects of pricing. This case provides the students with an opportunity to understand the pricing war and how to respond to it in a particular situation; understand positive-sum pricing and negative-sum pricing in telecom industry context; understand legal aspects of pricing; and how to leverage data for gaining newer customer insights. Abstract:
After the globalization of Indian’s economy in the year 1991, the telecommunication industry remained one of the most booming sectors among other major industries in India. In recent year’s dramatic and rapid changes are seen in the field of telecommunications. In the past few years in India, both foreign and domestic companies occupy the cellular market and offer a large number of services to the people. Consumers may be defined as “anyone engaged in evaluating, acquiring, using, or disposing of the services,” which he expects will satisfy his wants. A Marketing program cannot be made by ignoring consumer preferences. The Marketer may not be able to achieve their ultimate objectives ignoring consumer preferences. Knowing more and more about the consumers, helps the producer to produce the products in such a trendy manner, and also to give satisfaction to them. The main aim of this paper is to study on the Subscriber’s Satisfaction towards Jio Network with Special Reference to Tiruchirapalli City. A descriptive study was made on the primary data, which is collected from one hundred and twenty-five respondents based on judgmental sampling. Around one hundred and twenty-five respondents were given a questionnaire, and one hundred and three were found to be fully usable for analysis. The Questionnaire was used to collect primary data. Likert five-point scaling was given to customers for evaluating their Satisfaction towards Jio Network. IBM SPSS Statistic version 20.0 was used for the analysis, and the following tools were administered 1) Reliability Test 2) Factor Analysis and 3) Multiple Regression 4) Correlation. The reliability test was made, and the obtained coefficient alpha value (Cronbach’s alpha) was 0. 0.937, and hence the data is satisfactory reliability. Factor analysis was used to test whether all the factors we have chosen for the analysis are appropriate for the study, and Multiple Regression was used to find the percentage variation in the overall level of Subscriber’s Satisfaction towards Jio Network. In correlation, we can asses how well the sample data correlates with the population proportions specified by the hypothesis.

Abstract:
In recent years, Reliance Jio’s offer of 4G services, guaranteeing free voice calls and ‘unlimited’ data streaming, lead to disruption in the Indian telecom market with other cellular operators losing their revenue and customer base. To comprehensively analyze this churn in the Indian telecom industry and its impact on mobile phone customers, the article argues for observing the entanglement of infrastructural and platform-related discourses at three levels of operation: Jio’s strategies to capture the Indian telecom market and the responses by the leading incumbent service provider (Airtel), ordinary citizens’ phone use practices and infrastructural encounters, and the government’s vision for India’s digital future. Connecting pipes to platforms, Jio made infrastructural investments (in spectrum, cell towers, and fiber optics networks) to promote its suite of apps (JioTV, JioChat, and JioMoney). Ordinary citizens relate their access/proximity to telecom infrastructure (cell antennas) to their ability to effectively use apps on their phones. ‘Digital India’ vision purportedly facilitated infrastructural growth to create platforms that would support demonetization and facilitate transparent governance. Through such a three-pronged analysis, I conceptualize ‘infrastructural imaginaries’ that are coproduced by states and citizens, and lie at the intersection of structured state policy/corporate initiatives and lived experiences/affective encounters of ordinary citizens.

Abstract:
Learning outcomes From a pedagogical point, the case may fulfill following objectives: First, to understand Vodafone’s position in the current environment. Does the environment present the elements that are necessary for them to thrive (as analyzed using a PESTEL framework)? Second, to understand the resources needed to build competitive advantage in an emerging market context (as analyzed using the Porter five forces model); and third, to understand the competitive challenges of conducting business in a highly (and sometimes capriciously) regulated industry. Case overview/synopsis The Indian Telecommunication sector is one of the fastest growing industries in the world. There are nine telecom operators who are pioneering this growth; however, five private companies: Bharti, Idea, Reliance, Aircel and Vodafone make up 78.86 per cent of the market. These five companies have the opportunity to increase their market share by expanding the services provided to rural India; however, the Indian Tax Authorities have caused some hesitation. Aside from being known as heavy handed and unpredictable, the authorities have also demanded that Vodafone pay them billions in taxes. These court cases have challenged the way that other telecom operators look at investing. The arrival of Reliance Jio as a new player in the Indian wireless space with deep pockets has not helped the already fierce competitive landscape. Reliance Jio is forcing all wireless companies including Vodafone to reevaluate their India strategy. Complexity academic level This case could be used in both MBA and executive education programs. Most of the bibliographic databases like Web of Science, Scopus etc. use author name and full author name as two separate fields in the citation database. The analysis part uses short form of author name to list the high prolific authors. There are discrepancies in this listing since it is possible to render two different authors like Zang, Jio and Zang, James under one caption Zang, J.While listing the high productive authors in the analysis part, Zang, J will have two publications though the two authors are different. This study illustrates this ambiguity in rendering of author names taking scientometric analysis of Arrhythmia research as case study.

Abstract:
To clarify the contribution of Chinese herbal medicine to the treatment of male infertility, fluorescence spectra from Chinese herbal drugs at 500-700 nm with 488 nm excitation were investigated. The fluorescence spectra patterns from Hachimi-jio-gan, Gosha-jinki-gan and Hochu-ekki-to were similar to those from semen, seminal plasma and spermatozoa. Our previous report revealed that the concentration of spermatozoa correlated with the intensity of the emission peaks from spermatozoa, while sperm motility correlated with the emission peaks from spermatozoa and semen plasma. Thus, it was suggested that the components of these fluorescence productions in Chinese herbal medicine may contribute to clinical effects for male infertility.
