Abstract:
This paper makes the claim that despite the culture-page and scholar classes' favorable reception of just about everything she offers, Bengali-American writer Jhumpa Lahiri thinks meanly of them and of their progressive mindsets. Telling in the second's regard are her counter-normative usages of their favored tropes--of, for example, the madwoman-in-the-attic trope. Telling in the first's regard are the literary academics who appear in her fictions. Nine for nine, they are shallow, feckless, and bullying sorts. Yes, literary academics--they are the people Jhumpa Lahiri little likes. In its later pages, the paper also observes that for much of her career writer Lahiri has been in the throes of a crisis of literary faith. An early symptom of this crisis is discernible in that plot strand of her second book, The Namesake, wherein the protagonist Gogol does everything in his power to dispossess himself of his literary name. Another symptom of the crisis is the sparsity of literary allusions that mark her fourth and latest fiction's pages (as opposed to the great number that marked her earlier works). And, lastly, toward the end of the latest fiction, Whereabouts, when the writing-prof protagonist begins her journey out of the city that has been her lifelong residence, that’s Lahiri wishing she could do the same vis á vis her literary faith. Abstract:
The article deals with the specificity of understanding the problem of gender relations in Jhumpa Lahiri`s writing (the American writer of Bengali origin). The article`s aim is to explore the peculiarities of gender relations in the context of the transculture paradigm in Jhumpa Lahiri`s writing. Research methods: historical and typological (determining the specifics of themes, motifs, images, story features of the writer`s works), hermeneutic (interpretation of various aspects of the literary text), narratological analysis (specifics` analysis of J. Lahiri`s narrative manner). It is indicated that the study of gender issues is important in the modern literature discourse. The differences between the adaptation of men and women to the new cultural environment are clearly seen in Jhumpa Lahiri`s writing. Yes, men`s purpose is to realize their “American dream”, as most of them emigrate in search of a better life, scientific and academic goals (an example is the man from the story “Mrs. Sen`s”). Like Bengali families, men have every right to make all the important decisions in the family. The features of Indian women's adaptation to the new culture, which are seen not only in overcoming the language barrier, but are traced in everyday life and in relations with men, are analyzed. Women have completely different adaptation experiences. The problem of gender relations is traced to the identity crisis of the Indian woman in America, who balances between cultures and lives in two worlds: wants to be American and at the same time not forget her “desh” (literally “homeland” in Bengali). A stereotyped image of an Indian woman who “sacrifices” herself and remains in despair within the American apartment`s walls is portrayed in Jhumpa Lahiri`s works. Gender specificity is seen in the role of “invisible existence”: heroines are associated with maids who can cook dinner and wash socks only. Women seek refuge in the past and avoid the present. Unlike men, the assimilation process is much more difficult for women. It is mentioned that J. Lahiri shows the material dependence of women on men. The problem of gender relations that is also associated with the decline of family values, where marriage becomes a temporary matter, is no less important.

RESUMO Este artigo discute a autotradução, centrando-se na escritora Jhumpa Lahiri, enquanto autotradutora de Dove mi Trovo (2018) - obra escrita pela autora em italiano e traduzida por ela para a língua inglesa, cuja publicação foi intitulada Whereabouts (2021a). A discussão destaca essa particularidade que recobre tal prática de Lahiri, isto é, o fato de que a referida autotradução deu-se a partir da língua italiana para a língua inglesa, embora a autora, sendo inglesa, de descendência indiana e naturalizada norte-americana, tenha durante muitos anos escrito exclusivamente em inglês. Considerando essa configuração inversa e, com base nas próprias reflexões de Lahiri sobre autotradução, este artigo objetiva compreender como a autora percebe a sua prática.

Over the last 20 years, the Indian diaspora in the USA has suddenly come of age, numerically as well as economically. This growing confidence can be seen in the literature written by writers of Indian origin settled in the USA. Shunning sentimentality and overt nostalgia, this latter-day diasporic writing is laced with humour and a critical though affectionate tone directed towards their Indianness. Foremost among these voices is Jhumpa Lahiri. Pulitzer Prize winner Lahiri is the author of two novels and two short story collections. Deeply attached to her Indian heritage, yet wanting desperately to assimilate into the cultural melting pot of American society, Lahiri’s fiction is suffused with a complex biculturalism. With Jhumpa Lahiri’s fiction at the centre, my article will focus on this tug-of-war of alienation and assimilation that is at the heart of every immigrant experience.

This paper makes a semiotic analysis of train in The Namesake, a novel by Jhumpa Lahiri who has been marked as a crafty painter of the sensibilities of Indian diaspora. The paper objectifies the thoughtful and vivid use of train by the novelist to match the emotional aspects involved with the plot. Lahiri has just not used trains as a means of transport but as a symbol to the sensibilities of diaspora. The paper commences with a small discussion on general purposes for which writers use trains in their works to project different concerns and later projects the vivid usage of train in the novel. There appears a variety of references to train in The Namesake, each pointing to the writer’s different motives behind its induction. While at a point train shapes a person’s career, at other instance it ruins life. At some point it emerges as a symbol of faith, at another point it leads to deception. Through train, Lahiri projects kaleidoscopic images of the sensibilities of Indian diaspora in addition to gradual change and maturity. She is successful in associating train with emotional contours of her characters.

Jhumpa Lahiri’s characters in her short story collection Interpreter of Maladies keep wandering between the two worlds- one in their homeland and the other in the country where they choose to live and die. Lahiri records the emotional journey of characters seeking love and searching their identity beyond the barricade of nations, cultures, religions and generations. Mr. Kapasi is an interpreter of maladies and the malady of Mrs. Das is to be an unfamiliar person to her family’s culture, as Lahiri herself is an erudite interpreter of maladies- both social and emotional. Since, Mrs. Das is undertaking a second migration, she turns to be an interpreter like Mr. Kapasi whose job interests her so much. The characters’ longing to belong to either or both the habitats, their urge to de-stress the distress of alienation by searching an identity in their native heritage add value to the writer’s creative intensity. She illustrates her characters sprouting in the centre of a new crossbreed culture, the Indo-American awareness as Lahiri herself, the true representative of the second generation Indian in America.

Dans Dove mi trovo (Guanda, 2018), premier roman en italien de l’écrivaine américaine Jhumpa Lahiri, déjà autrice d’une autobiographie translingue au titre parlant (In altre parole, Guanda 2014 / En d’autres mots, traduction française publiée par Actes Sud en 2015), une femme dont ne sont donnés ni le prénom ni la nationalité, évolue dans une ville non précisée d’Italie. Seule, sans enfants, âgée d’une quarantaine d’années, elle vit dans un appartement qui ne lui appartient pas. Au cours du roman, pour son travail de chercheuse, elle est amenée à participer à une conférence où elle croise un homme âgé, étranger, important philosophe. Peu de temps plus tard, elle apprendra son décès en lisant le journal. Mon hypothèse – aussi indémontrable que fascinante – est que le philosophe que la narratrice rencontre est inspiré de la figure de Tzvetan Todorov, disparu en février 2017, plus ou moins dans la période où Lahiri écrivait son roman ; plus précisément, il serait celui que la critique a appelé le « second Todorov », l’auteur, notamment, de l’autobiographie intellectuelle L’Homme dépaysé (Seuil, 1996). Dans cet essai, Todorov envisage autobiographiquement le dépaysement comme une expérience – éminemment individuelle – de décentrement, d’étonnement et de désorientation, qui lui a apporté de nombreuses découvertes et enseigné l’art de la curiosité et un certain relativisme culturel. Je formule donc l’hypothèse que Lahiri a lu le « second Todorov » et a fait sienne cette conception, allant jusqu’à (peut-être) insérer dans le roman un petit hommage au philosophe. Dans cette contribution, après avoir présenté brièvement la conception todorovienne de dépaysement, je propose une lecture du roman Dove mi trovo à la lumière de celle-ci.

Indian diasporic writings made its milestone passage with the works of Salman Rushdie, Bharati Mukherjee, Jhumpa Lahiri, Amitav Ghosh, Rohinton Mistry, and Vikram Seth who earned popularity while dwelling abroad. One of the significant parts of these writers is that they compose transcendently the encounters of displacement. This paper explores the creative work of renowned diasporic Indian writer Jhumpa Lahari in her collection of eight short stories entitled "Unaccustomed Earth" where, she has explored the tug of war between the traditional-cultural values sustained by the immigrant parents but were curtailed by their precocious young American teenagers. The oscillation of permanent settlement in the new land and an overwhelming nostalgia for the homeland is a persistent theme of diasporic writers. In the introductory part of the research paper diaspora is defined and elucidated. The dispersion of Indian people across the globe and their vivid experiences and suffrages is discussed in the second part of the paper. The central themes of the diasporic writer and Indian diasporic writers and their closeness and corelation to celebrated diasporic writer Jhumpa Lahiri is discussed in the subsequent paragraphs. Diasporic terms like assimilation, adaptation, hybridity, host culture, ethnic and culture conflicts have been discussed in the light of the ‘Unaccustomed Earth’ by Lahiri. Irresistible past of the immigrants for their land of origin is a perennial source of study among diasporic writers. This paper explores the tug of war between the first-generation migrants who have the sense of rootlessness, alienation, and nostalgic homesickness on one hand and the hybrid and multicultural third generation and its synthesis of the past and the modern leading to socio-cultural, linguistic, and psychological transfusion widening new dimensions for the next generation in Lahiri’s stories.

En este artículo tomamos como objeto de análisis Il quaderno di Nerina (2021) de Jhumpa Lahiri para explorar cómo esta autora construye su subjetividad en dicha obra poética, que podríamos considerar una “autotraducción opaca” (Dasilva, 2015). Nuestro marco teórico se fundamenta en los conceptos, por un lado, de “born translated literature” (Walkowitz, 2015), y, por otro, de “retrabajo del ethos en el discurso autotraducido” (Spoturno, 2019). Siguiendo a la misma Lahiri (2022), la hipótesis de partida es que su actividad como escritora está estrechamente relacionada, o más bien coincide, con la de traductora. A partir de estas líneas teóricas, analizaremos en la obra las formas en las que Lahiri traduce su subjetividad y triplica su autoría mediante una mistificación literaria. El resultado es un solapamiento de lenguas híbridas y géneros que consideramos una traducción de una compleja imagen autoral en términos poéticos.

In the contemporary era, immigration, exile and expatriation are related to home, identity, nostalgia, memory and isolation. These are the recurrent theme in the diasporic writings of the post-colonial writers like V.S. Naipaul, Salman Rushdie, Bharati Mukherjee, Jhumpa Lahiri and so on. Identity is a topical issue in the contemporary study of culture with many ramifications for the study of ethnicity, class, gender, race, sexuality and subcultures. It becomes an issue when something assumed to be fixed, coherent, and stable is displaced by the experience of doubt and uncertainty. When a period of uncertainty and confusion upsets a person’s identity, it becomes insecure, usually due to a change in the expected aims or role in society. This identity trauma brings a sense of longing and loss as seen in Lahiri’s stories. The present article focuses on the first generation and second generation immigrants adherence to the old and new land as can be found in Jhumpa Lahiri’s The Namesake. Lahiri represents her characters struggling to balance the two worlds that involve the issues of immigration, race, class, and culture.

Abstract:
The study of main characters becomes one of delicate angles to observe in literary work. Instead of the various literary criticisms, linguistics also provides stylistics as the approach to appreciate and interpret literary work, including character analysis. ―Interpreter of Maladies‖ is one of the short stories written by Jhumpa Lahiri which attracts readers‘ attention. Readers may comment the way Lahiri portrays the main character of the story, Mr. Kapasi. To interpret the character‘s feeling in the story, Halliday‘s Functional Linguistics is employed to observe what happens in the character‘s thought. The previous purpose is facilitated by transitivity analysis focusing on the mental process analysis. Transitivity focuses on the clause analysis as the unit which brings meanings, including types of participants in the clause. Halliday divides mental process into four: perceptive, cognitive, emotive, and desiderative. The analysis shows that perceptive, cognitive, and affective dominate the narrator‘s description on Mr. Kapasi, while desiderative appears the least in the main character. The choice of those mental process types signals that Lahiri portrays Mr. Kapasi as an attentive, intellectual, and affectionate character.

Qui, certe opere come Interpreter of Maladies (1999), scritta originariamente in inglese, e In altre parole (2015) e Dove mi trovo (2018), scritte originariamente in italiano, sono studiate come dettagli che prefigurano un disegno più ampio. Incorporando elementi di più culture, esse sono concepite come un indice rivelatore di tendenze sociologiche e letterarie che, sviluppandosi, inducono a criticare modelli universalisti di autorità culturale e a ripensare le dinamiche che sottendono la formazione di molteplici canoni letterari. La prospettiva adottata in questa analisi è sia interna che esterna. Attraverso la prospettiva interna si può risalire al funzionamento testuale, al modo in cui si creano vari modelli di identità, al loro rapportarsi a più memorie culturali, categorie sociologiche e lingue. Attraverso la prospettiva esterna, invece, si può analizzare la ricezione. Dalam dekonstruksi unsur-unsur yang semula terlupakan dan termarjinalkan seperti kelompok-kelompok minoritas, kelompok yang terpinggirkan, kawasan kumuh diberikan perhatian secara seimbang dan proporsional. Dalam tulisan ini dibahas tentang dekonstruksi dalam karya sastra. Karya sastra yang didekonstuksi adalah The Name Sake. Novel ini berupakan novel terjemahan karya Jhumpa Lahiri, pengarang dari India. Teori yang digunakan untuk membedah novel ini adalah teori Dekonstruksi Jacques Derrida. Ada dua hal yang dibahas dalam tulisan ini yakni upaya pengarang dalam menghadirkan oposisi-oposisi dan kelompok-kelompok termarjinalkan dalam teks. Oposisi-oposisi yang dihadirkan oleh pengarang dalam teks antara lain: (1) oposisi antara laki-laki dan perempuan, antara suami dan istri yang diwakili oleh kehadiran tokoh Ashoka dan Ashima. Ashoka digambarkan sebagai pusat dan Ashima sebagai pinggiran; (2) oposisi antara dunia Barat dan Timur. Dunia Timur diwakili oleh India yang tecermin dalam kehidupan keluarga Ashoka dan Ashima. Dunia Barat yang diwakili oleh Amerika menghadirkan tokoh-tokoh dari keluarga Amerika; (3) Oposisi ketiga adalah antara kesetiaan dan ketidaksetiaan. In Interpreter of Maladies (1999) Jhumpa Lahiri gives voice to Boori Ma, a durwan (doorkeeper) who chronicles about the easier times she enjoyed before deportation to Kolkata (previously known as Calcutta, India) after Partition of 1947. Lahiri plays with the word real implying that Boori Ma’s stories could be deciphered as real or not. Boori Ma’s fictitious life resembles the one of the Royal Family of Oudh, which Lahiri seems to be inspired by. Foreign correspondents (Kaufman, 1981; Miles, 1985; Barry, 2019) did not question the veracity of this family’s life story. In the present article, the two stories are compared: a literary and a real one. It is our intention to prove that traumatic experiences, such as Partition, cause subjects to imagine an alternative life; strategy which is unconsciously activated to heal trauma (LaCapra, 1999; Mookerjea-Leonard, 2017). The latter is what western journalists and readers failed to acknowledge

In Jhumpa Lahiri's work The Lowland (2013), the idea of personality is especially significant, and various characters can be broke down as needs are. An Indian lady Gauri, being a widow and hitched to her previous spouse's sibling, is the principal character. Gauri starts to discover her new, different (possible present or future) personalities after relocating to America. In this way, the paper targets discussing how the personality of Gauri changes across the novel based on identity transformation, which indicates Gauri as a diasporic character. The discussion is established on the theory of identity. It shows how relocation transforms into transparency and affects Gauri's character.

This study, drawing upon contemporary theories in the field of migration, postcolonialism, and translation, offers an analysis of literary works by Monica Ali (of Bangladeshi origins) and Jhumpa Lahiri (of Bengali Indian parents). Ali and Lahiri epitomize second-generation immigrant literature, play with the linguistic concept of translating and interpreting as forms of hybrid connections, and are significant examples of how a text may become a space where multi-faceted identities co-habit in a process of deconstructing and reconstructing their own sense of emplacement in non-native places. Each immigrant text becomes a hybrid site, where second- and third generations of immigrant subjects move as mobile, fluctuating and impermanent identities, caught up in the act of transmitting their bicultural and bilingual experience through the use of the English language as their instrument of communication in a universe which tends to marginalize them. This investigation seeks to demonstrate how Ali and Lahiri represent two different migrant experiences, Muslim and Indian, each of which functioning within a multicultural Anglo-American context. Each text is transformed into the lieu where identities become both identities-intranslation and translated identities and each text itself may be looked at as the site of preservation of native identities but also of the assimilation (or adaptation) of identity. Second-generation immigrant women writers become the interpreters of the old and new cultures, the translators of their own local cultures in a space of transition.

Teniendo en cuenta los conceptos de literatura ectópica y motor translaticio propuestos por Tomás Albaladejo, atenderemos a nociones como las de exilio lingüístico y pertenencia y a la manera en que estos aspectos cristalizan en la sorprendente obra de Lahiri. La mudanza lingüística derivada de la decisión voluntaria de traducirse a sí misma a una nueva lengua de creación literaria, la italiana, en un texto autobiográfico lleno de metáforas es analizada como búsqueda de un espacio o tópos de residencia en el que echar raíces. Blending literary and cultural studies, the essay discusses the manners in which Jhumpa Lahiri’s literary universe constructs a gradual unfolding of a layered transcultural vision. The paper argues that in the shift from fictions of migration to autobiographical narratives of self-redefinition, the Bengali-American author advances cultural scenarios of transformation that enable the reshaping of cultural identities through the transcendence of fixed cultural loyalties. Invoking perceived lacks in their native cultural traditions and intuiting the incompleteness of cultures, her characters are haunted by the urge to cross cultural boundaries in order to gain a sense of personal fulfilment. Ultimately, Lahiri herself replicates this pattern as she relocates to Italy and writes in a new language (Italian). The last stage in Lahiri’s transcultural scenario is represented by an attempt to dissociate cultural specificity from the notion of identity, as she takes refuge in the realm of abstraction through minimalist aesthetics. Relying on a close reading of her texts, the essay will scrutinise the author’s peculiar outlook on transculturality, which appears to embrace various cultural spaces while seemingly avoiding specific attachments. The analysis aims to establish whether Lahiri succeeds in transgressing the very idea of cultural belonging in her quest for a freeing path.
