Abstract:
The aim of this study was to explore the digital access to rare book collections and rare book librarian’s new profile. Internet search engines were used in collecting data from institutions and librarians from Brazil and around the world. People responsible for rare book collections that were listened on libraries sites and members of the electronic discussion lists related to rare books were contacted. A questionnaire was sent by e-mail and the results categorized into three classes: issues about the digital access, issues about the digital library’s characteristics and, about the rare book librarian’s profile. The valorization process of the rare book collections with the implementation of digital access is outlined in this study. The results shows that there is an increase in the number of local users and the emergence of new types of users as a consequence of the digital access to the most valuable rare material from the libraries. To provide digital access to the rare material is a strategic decision taken by the libraries management teams. These teams are still in the process of evaluating their holdings and the opportunities created by the new access. Our study identified some digitalization collective initiatives of rare material from libraries as a solution to the concern of the standardization of the practices related to the electronic documents. The major initiatives observed came from the university libraries that were preoccupied with the integration of rare book collections with the other institution’s research material. An evaluation of the rare book librarian’s profile was made focusing the experience and training adaptability to activities related to the digital access. Some of their special skills have became compatible to the new technology started from a personal interest in the technological developments of the Internet. As a general introduction to the rare books collections at the Internet, this study is best seen as a tentative interpretation of the new possibilities that the digital access may contribute to the libraries and to its most valuables holdings.

Mobile phones are ubiquitous, however they are vastly underpowered compared to their desktop counterparts. We propose a technique to play potentially resource intensive games over a network, and provide a prototype system called RemoteME which implements this technique. We also explore the responsiveness requirement for systems of this nature, establish benchmarks for responsiveness via user studies. We evaluate our implementation by measuring its responsiveness and comparing it to this benchmark.

Abstract:
This thesis aims to propose a Digital Preservation Criteria Set which is crucial for scientific information systems in the research units of the Science and Technology Ministry of Brazil. Four objectives were formulated in proposing the criteria: a) describe the digital preservation procedures currently being used; b) identify in scientific literature the key criteria used in building digital preservation systems; c) identify the digital preservation demands from the sampled research units; and d) identify both concepts and procedures that might interfere with standard digital preservation procedures of scientific information. A literature review has highlighted that a theoretical evaluation of both digital preservation criteria and requirements from international projects is nonexistent. It also highlighted that there are a very limited number of studies assessing the benefits produced by the application of this criteria and these requirements. Within the context of digital preservation both Archivistic and Information Science systems deal with tasks related to information flow. Only recently, are these areas proposing patterns, norms, policies and procedures directed to digital archiving. Trustworthy is a criteria for digital preservation procedures that stands out in the Scientific literature and is critical in identifying the digital preservation criteria set for scientific information. The proposed digital preservation criteria set is related to institutional aspects (Trustworthy, Political Responsibility and Economic Sustainability) and management aspects (Digital Repository Inclusion, Transparency, and Long-term Accessibility). These criteria are considered determinant elements in the management proprieties of administration systems for scientific information. The methodology in data collection included surveys, interviews, observation, and ethnographic content analysis according to David Altheide's approach. A descriptive bibliometric study was conducted in order to identify both the theoretical and methodological approaches in digital preservation literature from 1996 to 2007. Data analysis was performed using the Statistical Package for the Social Sciences-SPSS. Qualitative data from field research indicated that most of the information unit managers consider digital preservation as procedures related to storage capacity, migration and content dissemination. They also realize that these procedures are administered in a centralized manner. Only one research unit's participants recognized the importance of institutional policies in defining data ingest functions and management of contents archived in the institutional digital library. Suggestions for future studies include investigating the acquisition and application of Norms and Standards by government staff responsible for the administration of scientific information systems and extensive discussions both on Preservation Metadata relating to scientific information and Long-term management of propriety rights within the digital environment.

Abstract:
Information has gained, in the last decade, a huge importance. It is an extremely valuable social resource, for it generates wealth and it leads to scientific progress. Due to the new information technologies and the World Wide Web – the new privileged means of communication – information has acquired a digital basis which has made its production, distribution and diffusion easier, fulfilling the growing needs of organizations and individuals. However, because it is too vulnerable, digital information presents new challenges when we think of its preservation. The fast degradation of the media and the technological obsolescence and dependence make this kind of information unlikely to endure. For that reason, thinking about the preservation of digital information is, perhaps, more important than considering the preservation of analogical information, not only because of its economical value but also because its uniqueness demands ongoing and more complex actions and preservation strategies. Although the preservation of digital information is a task for a multitude of entities (such as authors/producers, hardware and software engineers, publishers/distributors, governments, users/consumers, etc.), libraries are still the irreplaceable agents to ensure that the cultural, literary and scientific heritage remains imperishable, now in a digital basis. Assuming this thought as a starting point, this essay presents the main features, concepts, strategies and challenges placed by the preservation of digital information, through the libraries perspective.

Abstract:
The aim of this thesis is to create a quantitative overview of the current stock of audio and video materials in a selected number of institutions, and to show where the strengths and weaknesses, concerning digitalisation and long-term conservation, are. Another goal is to give a general overview of regional differences, how the institutions develop their collections, how the holdings are conserved for future availability and if they are available for everybody or for specific user-groups only. A summary at the end analyses the status quo of the selected institutions, and identifies problematic areas and future prospects in this field. The inquiry is concentrated on a selection of 110 archives, museums and collections all over Austria. The study was done by mail questionnaire, some with call back or additional personal interview. In conclusion, it was found that a lot of institutions in Austria are not digitizing their holdings, some do not know about the importance of digitisation at all and the possibility of long-term preservation is not provided. A couple of institutions do not even know about the dimension of the audio-visual stock in their archive. In most of these cases, a shortage of staff and lack of financial aid are the reason for this situation.

Genev, Evgeni. "VNC-Interface for Java X86-Emulator Dioscuri." Thesis, 2010. http://eprints.rclis.org/15102/1/Genev_VNC_Dioscuri.pdf.

Full text
Abstract:
As a part of the PLANETS project a handful of experiments was made trying to automate typically interactive procedures. These tests have shown that the remote control software VNC is a very promising solution. VNC builds upon RFB - a simple remote access protocol, which works at the framebuffer level and is consequently platform independent. The above mentioned tests were made using QEMU, which has an integrated VNC interface. The resulting automation technique should be generalized and tested with other suitable emulators. The goal of this work is the implementation of an integrated VNC server for another suitable emulator, thus help generalizing the above technique. As such an emulator Dioscuri is chosen. "Dioscuri is an x86 computer hardware emulator written in Java. It is designed by the digital preservation community to ensure documents and programs from the past can still be accessed in the future."

Abstract:
Ever since the picturisation of Umberto Eco's novel "The name of the rose", monastery libraries are perceived by the public as inaccessible silos of valuable knowledge. It is less known that today's monastery libraries – provided that there is staff – are open for the public. Several of the libraries had to sell parts of their collections due to financial reasons. In order to facilitate reconstructing the provenance of books and manuscripts sold by monastery libraries, it is necessary to catalogue the collections as soon as possible. In the first part of this thesis, an overview of the current situation of Austria's monastery libraries is given. In the second part, the basics of the European union's "digital heritage" policy are presented with a focus on the cataloguing and presentation of cultural assets from Austrian monastery libraries. As an appendix, a list of 95 Austrian monastic libraries and statistic data about those libraries are provided.

Valizada, Isgandar. "Large-Scale, Transparent Format Migration System." Thesis, 2011. http://eprints.rclis.org/16073/1/maindoc.pdf.

Full text
Abstract:
An important challenge in digital preservation is the problem of data format obsolescence. The digital objects eventually become inaccessible when the applications, which were properly interpreting their formats, cease to exist. Preserving these applications is an important step in solving above-mentioned problem. However, in order to enable the usage of the objects over time by newly developed tools, the objects must be periodically converted to more spread out formats. The work in this thesis is dedicated to the design of an easily extendible, transparent and large-scale oriented system which is able to perform such conversions. The system was designed as part of an existing digital preservation framework in order to enrich the framework with its migration functionality. The interactive session replaying was chosen as the main approach in performing format conversions. According to this approach, the conversion process is carried out by computer interaction with the graphical user interface of the original, format-native applications. Their capability of exporting the loaded digital objects in a format other than their initial format is used. The order and nature of the input events necessary for this task are acquired once from the corresponding manual human interaction. The input events are then reproduced under the same or similar conditions for arbitrary digital objects subject to the same source-to-target format conversion. The work in this thesis presents the structure of the system in general and focuses on the components responsible for the actual conversion. A prototype application has been developed and deployed in an existing digital preservation framework. During the experiments it has shown successful results when converting digital objects in a completely unattended way.

Abstract:
INTRODUCTION: The photographs create links with the past by promoting a genuine understanding and a sense of identity. Basque institutions generate rescue projects and preservation of cultural heritage of the community. PROBLEM: The photographic materials that reflect the history of the "Euzko Etxea" Basque Center of La Plata (EEBCLP), not being organized documentary, are constrained in their use and exploitation. Hypothesis: Implementation of the Digital Photo Archive will recognize and value the activities, habits, people who give identity to EEBCLP. OBJECTIVE: To implement a photographic archive in which, through the scanning and document management, adding value to the photographs on the history of EEBCLP. MATERIAL AND METHOD: The Analysis Unit is specifically 'user' (Partners and logical target for direct actions and "Matxin Burdin" Library and the EEBCLP giving the collective unit of analysis- and investigators leads from an academic). Researchers have participated in the Urazandi Collection and / or writing on Basque topics. As references are contacted five (5) photographic archives, four (4) of the Basque Country and one (1) of Argentina. Exploratory study, using a qualitative methodology based on quantitative questionnaires with slogans semi-structured, in some cases, multiple choice and open questions in others. A Users were asked about the files Basques, photography as a historical document and actions of Basque heritage preservation, and the Photographic Archives of operating guidelines. RESULTS: 100% of partners and 60% of researchers argues that the historical documentation helps to maintain the identity and 75% which is high or critical importance of photographs as historical documents. The majority in both groups (48% partner and 65% research) supports the coordinated work among the files Basques. The greatest difficulties encountered in the consulting and research files on the Basque diaspora are: access to material, language and lack of technical organization. Are mentioned on witness protection in the USA, Uruguay, Basque Government, and so on. The proposals to facilitate access to documentation in the Basque Diaspora, are: the need for technical coordination, greater accessibility via the Internet; archival training, funding, dissemination of academic publications in areas of the Basque Diaspora, integration of all resources in a Biblioteca Nacional Vasca. Summarizes the procedures and strategies employed by the 5 Reference files (IRARGI, ERESBIL, Eusko Ikaskuntza, the Archivo Municipal de Vitoria-Gasteiz and CeDIAP). CONCLUSION: The implementation of the Digital Photo Archive EEBCLP confirm the hypothesis: document management and digitization provide availability, access and dissemination of photographic materials and the preservation of identity through them. RECOMMENDATION: Create Digital Photo Archive EEBCLP, based on a strategic plan that defines its mission, objectives, policies, strategies, operational criteria (guidelines, parameters, etc.). Abstract:
The Emulation strategy in digital preservation tackles the obsolescence of hardware, software and data formats by restoring the original usage environment of digital objects via emulation techniques. This means that supporting objects, such as operating systems or applications, have to be stored in a software archive. This thesis deals with the design of such an archive. First, some previous research results are outlined, with focus on the different types of supporting objects, and a concept called "View Path". Based on that, the responsibilities of a software archive are shown. These are the archiving of view path components, and the maintenance of emulated environments for visualization or migration of archived objects. Further, two major concepts for fulfilling these requirements are discussed, the dynamic generation and static archiving of emulated environments. The thesis concludes with the presentation of a prototypical architecture, based on Java EE. This architecture allows access to the archive by a web browser, a java applet provides access to the emulated environments.

Abstract:
The following essay aims to highlight the essential role of digital preservation to keep the documents of today available for tomorrow by studying and analizing one of its most important branches: web archiving. This one is a discipline that has its roots in Library Science and Information Science, and it is completely alien to the world of the archives in our country. The first part of this essay offers a brief overview on web archiving and, from an archival science point of view, will try to answer questions like: What is web archiving? What is it used for? When did it begin? Which organizations are putting it into practice? How can we capture and store a website? In the second part, we will try to think about the implementation of web archiving from the perspective of the archival science, who can take a step forward in its evolution by the accomplishment of this sort of challenges.

Abstract:
As the value of research data has become increasingly recognized in the United Kingdom by public funding organizations, pressure has been placed on higher education institutions to provide access to research data or risk future funding. As a result, research data services have emerged rapidly over the past few years. However, it is not clear whether these services effectively ensure the long-term preservation of research data or apply appropriate data curation measures. Through a three-part methodology, the dissertation research aimed to provide a clear picture of the current state of data curation in UK HEIs, including adherence to best practices and the existence of provisions for data curation efforts. A survey questionnaire was disseminated as the primary method of data collection, and additional information was gathered through a literature review and an analysis of online resources and institutional policies. Data curation practices were found to be mostly inconsistent with best practices and were largely focused on facilitating access to research data. However, there is an awareness of the underdeveloped areas of data curation, especially preservation, and efforts are being made to improve these areas. Institutional policies were found to be mostly documents that defined roles and responsibilities and provided little guidance for follow-through. The role of researchers was repeatedly emphasized in both policy and practice and was essential in understanding the current state of data curation.

Abstract:
Digitization of collections enables wide dissemination of content from our documentary heritage and increases access to rare documents and current research literature in library collections. Indian digitization initiatives have produced a vast amount of digitized documents. They are made accessible through intranets or Internet channels. However, maintaining an Internet-based online digital library system has several problems such as availability of web server for 24X7 timeframe, robust broadband connectivity, efficient retrieval engine, ownership of digitized documents, etc. This study address such issues affecting Indian initiatives. It also documents the digitization and digital preservation practices by many national and institutional initiatives. The study gives special reference to India’s largest digitization initiatives – Digital Library of India, theses and dissertations in universities, heritage items of Indira Gandhi National Centre for the Arts, National Mission for Manuscripts, and digitization of Indian journal collections. The study found that many Indian institutions have established a defined path of capacity, competency and capability development in digitization of documentary heritage. They have secured support from concerned stakeholders, parent bodies and various funding agencies. While multi-stakeholder participation is secured in digitization projects, self-sustainability of the project was also ensured. Every information system project has a life cycle. After completion of digitization project and establishment of an online or intranet-based retrieval system, normally digitization work gets discontinued. Information retrieval system needs to be continued to achieve project goals and objectives, and to serve the target audiences on long-term basis. Institutional support is also necessary for self-sustainability of such projects. Open Access to knowledge and information proves to be an efficient diffusion model for scholarly literature. Study observed that some Indian projects have established Open Access repositories at institutional or national level for worldwide dissemination of information. These repositories enhance international visibility of India’s research output

Open access movement is increasingly expanding from scientific publications to research data. Initiatives to make research data broadly accessible and fully available for reuse are emerging from a variety of stakeholders at international and European scale – states, funding agencies, publishers and scientific communities themselves. Research data openness is achieved through different policies, technical and legal mecanisms, but also lie on good data management practices. While France is beginning to get into the Open research data movement, it is important to consider that data policies are also needed at university level. Librarians have a serious part to play in leading on institutional data policy, understanding researchers needs and helping in metadata creation. Open access to research data is thus a unique opportunity for librarians to redesign their connection with scientific communities inside research institutions.

Abstract:
The objective of this thesis is a section design of biographical data from a digital inter-operable library named VESTIGIUM. With this aim, we carried out an in-depth study on the regulation, technology and current projects concerning the information of persons, which we here refer to as biographical data or authority control. We therefore analysed the current level of name authority control, right from the first conceptualisations back in the 19th century, and the usual settings in which this type of data appears: libraries, archives and museums (LAM). We then analysed the current aspects of the new universe in which these abstract entities operate, since they can appear in multiple environments for different uses throughout the World Wide Web. This is the reason why the analysis becomes complex and limited, since authority records may be treated differently according to the context and use. The working method consists of both literature review techniques and fieldwork which aim to find information systems that operate with authority control on the internet as well as cases of use of linked data (LD). The creation of a regulatory framework in terms of name authority data in the scope of archives –International Standard Archival Authority Record For Corporate Bodies, Persons and Families (ISAAR (CPF)) and Encoded Archival Context – Corporate Bodies, Persons and Families (EAC-CPF)-, libraries and information science –Functional Requirements for Authority Data (FRAD), Guidelines for Authority Records and References (GARR), MARC 21 Format for Authority Data, Resource Description and Access (RDA), MARCXML, Metadata Authorities Description Schema (MADS)-, and in the implementation world of recommendations for metadata from the World Wide Web Consortium (W3C) –Dublin Core Metadata Initiative (DCMI), Resource Description Framework (RDF), Friend to Friend (FOAF), RELATIONSHIP, and BIO- have enabled us to create a prototype that acts as grounds for the inter-operability of biographical data, ensuring visibility at international level. Likewise, the formats of export defined according to the rules and standards of the application actually enable data exchange, taking into account that the use of technologies from the Semantic Web allows the integration of data originating from various systems. The data model proposed in author´s table with contextual information complies with the four basic principles defined by Berners Lee for the publication of linked data. The benefits achieved by using the semantic regulation on the table are the following: improvements in the process of obtaining links between entities semantically similar or related, vocabularies of values, groups of metadata elements or data groups that originate from different sources which in turn also provide this kind of data.

Thesis about situation of the digital preservation and analysis of the present tools available to confront the responsibility of the preservation of this property and to guarantee their public access in the time. The search, beginning from a reflection of base on the concepts of preservation/conservation of the digital resources, with the different approaches of Librarians and Archivists and the interest interdisciplinary, introduces criteria and strategies of collection, some projects, studies and international initiatives, some examples of systems for the long term preservation of the digital resources from 1996 at today, internationals and in Europe. About the legal matters they confront themselves the author's rights, the legal deposit and the institutional and university repositories, particularly in new law in Italy. These are the arguments of the three chapters of the study: the multidisciplinary aspect of the problem; methods, policies of preservation, nets and models of deposit of the digital resources; Web archiving, systems and criteria of collection for the Web the sites of preservation; sources and international discussions of reference; initiatives and international projects (e.g. Internet Archive, Nordic Web Archive, PANDORA and PADI in Australia, PARADIGMA in Norway) and in European Union; author's rights, copyright and copyleft, Legal Deposit, institutional repositories in Italian Universities, PhD and Master thesis. Review legal of laws. The Bibliography. References are relatives to all sources cited in the search. Supervisor of the Thesis is Prof. Paul Gabriele Weston; co-examiner is Prof.ssa Gianna Del Bono.

Abstract:
The study examines preconditions to adopt semantic web technologies for a novel specialized medium of scholarly communication that – also interdisciplinary – enables the synchronicity of publication and knowledge representation on the one hand and the dynamic bundling of assertions on the other hand. Therefore it is first of all necessary to determine a concept of „(scholarly) publication“ and of neighbouring concepts. These considerations are fertilized by theories that can be related to the radical constructivism. Therefrom derives a critique of the mainstream of knowledge representation that resigns to being not able to represent the dynamics of knowledge. Finally the study evinces a conceptual outline of a technical system that is built upon the known concept of nanopublications and is called „scholarly network“. The increased effort while publishing in the scholarly network is outweighed by the benefits of this publication medium: It may help to render research outputs more precisely as well as to raise their connectivity through reducing the complexity of assertions. Beyond that it would generate an openly accessible and finely structured discourse archive – a wide participation provided.
