Full textSweep VEP (visual evoked potentials) is known to be a valuable exam to estimate visual acuity (VA) in infants because of its objectivity and its rapidity. Nevertheless, several studies have pointed out the variability of the responses and sometimes attenuations at some spatial frequencies called “notches”. In this thesis, we demonstrate a relationship between the phase of the signal and these attenuations when the short-time discrete Fourier transform (STDFT) is used. We introduce a new method of signal processing which takes in account the phase shifting, based on stationary discrete wavelet transform (SDWT) for the denoising and on extended Kalman filtering (EKF) for the estimation of the visual system response. The new method is tested on two sets of exams. The first one comes from the CHRU of Lille and the second one from our laboratory. The SDWT improves the signal to noise ratio on average by 10.9 dB (CI95 [6.3,15.6]) and reduces artefacts caused by blinking or eyes movements. Thanks to the EKF, the estimation of the response of the visual system is more precise. By taking into account the phase of the signal, the shape of the reponse presentsless variations. The dispersion among the sweeps is divided by 1.4 compared to the DSTFT. The correlation between ETDRS VA and the VA estimation of the new method (Spearman’s correlation= 0.64, p-value=6 10-4, root mean squared error (RMSE)=0.34 logMAR) is better than that of the current method (Spearman’s correlation=0.58, p-value=1.1 10-3, RMSE=0.45 logMAR)

Full textIt is necessary, at the international level, to form functional skills to the demands of life and work, in terms of: the ability to solve problems, to take autonomous and flexible initiatives, to mobilize knowledge for Manage complex situations and solve problems. At the centre of a good employability of the person, are self-directed skills (thinking and consciously choosing one's own future), both those of planning and redrawing oneself (life design). In the field of employability, the meeting of young people with disabilities and the world of work is difficult, because of the persistence of stereotypes and stigmas, as well as the lack of a real political and systemic will to apply and make comply with the regulations. It is therefore necessary to explore the construction of employability not only from a theoretical point of view, but also through the perception that young adults with disabilities have their employability in order to implement training and advice to explore skills related to the employability of all young adults, from an inclusive perspective. A empirical-descriptive exploratory research has been chosen. In particular, the tool developed by the IISFOL/INAPP and computerized by the technology Section of the SInAPSi University Centre was used to explore the employability potential of young adults with disabilities in Campania (18-30 years). It was also chosen to explore, through semi-structured interviews, the history and professional project of 20 young disabled Campani. With regard to the data analysis methodology, the use of the NVIVO software (Richards, 1999) is foreseen for the qualitative analysis of all interviews and the use of SPSS software to perform descriptive analyses of the data Collected. Young persons with disabilities who participated in the study have a potential for employability Moderately low employability and report difficulties in the design of their professional project. The qualitative analysis confirmed this difficulty and frame the professional project in terms of reorienting oneself between resources and barriers

Full textWithin an exploratory approach, our thesis is aimed to improve the description and the understanding of the development of high-tech start-ups. After defining the context of our research through a demographic study of the Sophia Antipolis clusters, we undertook three qualitative case studies. These case studies propelled us to envisage the existence of four distinct development models based on the temporality and integration of the activities linked to the technological, commercial, and financial development processes. Their existence was validated using a resourcebased and competence-based quantitative study of 20 companies within the framework of a procedural analysis. We propose a characterisation in terms of different variables and an operational and conceptual mapping of four development models entitled classic, simple, chaotic and complex
Lamine, Khalid. "Deraeocoris lutescens schiling (Heteroptera : Miridae) : un auxiliaire potentiel?" Toulouse 3, 2004. http://www.theses.fr/2004TOU30244.
Full textDeraeocoris lutescens (Heteroptera : Miridae) is a predator commonly found in the French hazelnut orchards. We have studied some aspects of ecology, biology and behaviour of this insect to estimate its biotic potential. Investigations under natural and artificial environmental conditions (i. E. Orchard sampling, laboratory observations, ect. ) were conducted to determine its life history. The effects of the copulation and photoperiod on ovarian activity of this mirid were evaluated in the laboratory. Its diapause pattern, its critical photoperiod and sensitive stages were determined. The mouthparts' ultrastructure show the adaptation of D. Lutescens for zoophagy. Morever, the voracity and feeding preferences of this generalist predator were evaluated and the effect of fast on its searching path was investigated by means a trajectometric method. The results of this study suggest that D. Lutescens can be considered as a promising biological pest control agent

Full textThe identification and the improvement of the potential in pro-vitamins A of sauces accompanying staple foods could constitute a food-based approach for combating vitamin A deficiency (VAD) among young children in Benin. The nutritional quality and the retention of pro-vitamins A in sauces during traditional home processing has been assessed by using a field-laboratory iterative approach. Anthropometric measurements were used to appreciate subjects' nutritional status. A food consumption survey of 420 young children was conducted to assess the adequacy of iron, zinc and vitamin A (VA) intakes, and to identify the main VA-rich foods eaten by children using the weighed food record method. Mangoes, eggs, red palm oil (RPO), various leafy vegetables (LV) and palm nut juice sauces appeared to be the main VA-rich foods consumed by 34.2% investigated children. When consumed, these LV sauces containing RPO or palm nut juice (PNJ) contributed to the meeting of 71-129% of the recommended VA intake of young children. The traditional processing method of the most promising sauces such as amaranth leaf sauces based on RPO or PNJ was monitored step by step during home visits and allowed identifying the thermal treatments applied to LV, to palm nut or to RPO as critical steps. Heating the RPO at 180-200°C appears as the more prejudicial step to VA. It decreased more than 70% and in less than 3 min, α-carotene, β-carotene and Retinol Activity Equivalent (RAE) contents. Violaxanthin, a non pro-VA carotenoid, was the only compound to be significantly affected by the thermal treatment (100°C) of amaranth leaves. RAE remained high after blanching even when alkaline traditional potash was added. The formulated sauces on the basis of the ingredients LV-amaranth, palm nut or RPO present a good acceptability, a high RAE and their consumption could be promoted favorably in food-based strategies to alleviate VAD

Full textThe alpha isoform of the peroxisome proliferator-activated receptors (PPARalpha) is a member of the nuclear receptor superfamily (Chapter I). Following its activation by various compounds, PPARalpha (Chapter II) regulates the transcription of several target genes, many of which are involved in lipid metabolism. We developed a cDNA macroarray (Chapter III) dedicated to PPARalpha and its heterodimerization partner the retinoïd X receptor (RXR). This tool was used to study the gene expression regulations induced by the activation of PPARalpha through various stimuli which are linked to the fields of : i) pharmacology (PPARalpha and RXR-activating drugs, Chapter IV), ii) nutrition (dietary fatty acids, Chapter V) and iii) physiopathology (fasting, Chapter VI). These in vivo studies illustrate the activation of PPARalpha by fatty acids provided either by low-fat diets or by adipose tissue lipolysis during fasting. They also demonstrate that the PPARalpha signaling pathway is influenced by RXR activation in vivo
McKay, Samuel. "Identity Change and Development as a Potential Explanatory Mechanism of the Outcomes of Student Exchange Experiences." Thesis, Bordeaux, 2020. http://www.theses.fr/2020BORD0160.
Full textHigher education serves as a key context for identity development for emerging adults. Within this space, student exchange is becoming increasingly important. Studies show that exchange is related to numerous positive outcomes such as career success, intercultural skills, wellbeing, and positive functioning. However, relatively little is known about the mechanisms that promote development. In this thesis, a model that integrates the status, resource, and narrative models of identity along with theories of acculturation is proposed to explain the underlying mechanisms of change during exchange. In the model, identity development in the form of exploring and committing to identity alternatives is argued to be the primary underlying explanation for the outcomes of exchange. To test this model two studies were conducted based on a mixed methods framework. The first study assessed the integrated identity model with Australian and French students who completed a series of questionnaires measuring their identity, acculturation, wellbeing, career clarity, and the agentic personality before (Australians N = 203, French N = 233), during (Australian N = 111, French N = 147), and after their exchange (Australians N = 96, French N = 128). Longitudinal multilevel models and random intercept cross-lagged panel models demonstrated that exchange supported increases in identity commitment and exploration in breadth while simultaneously decreasing ruminative exploration. In terms of the mechanisms of change, the explanatory power of the identity models was mixed. Identity commitment was shown to be related to growth in the agentic personality and career calling but played a smaller role in students enhanced cultural intelligence and life satisfaction. The aim of the second study was to explore how students conceptualise the processes of change and development during exchange. Interviews were conducted with a subsample of participants (Australians N = 10, French N = 10) from the first study. Thematic analysis identified two major themes of change and associated driving experiences, which related to participants feeling more confident, while also clarifying their self-perceptions and worldviews. Three themes of influencing factors showed that students’ attitudes, previous experience, and family environments could affect exchange outcomes. The findings suggest that identity is central to development during exchange with the results aligning with the proposed identity model. The combined findings of this thesis provide novel explanations for the mechanisms of change during exchange. The research highlights the importance of identity in the development process and points to opportunities for both future studies and interventions. Further work is needed to assess explanatory potential power of the proposed model with a broader range of variables and cohorts. Nevertheless, this thesis presents an important first step in identifying and assessing the processes of change during student exchange using an identity framework

Full textGlobal Climate Change will increase precipitations in the temperate and Northern coast of Europe during winter and spring. In riverine ecosystems, precipitation affects directly the discharge of running waters and, thus, it is predicted that streams will face more severe floods. Additionally, air and water temperature will increase all over the world. These new environmental conditions can alter the phenology of species and predator/prey interactions. Newborns of brown trout (Salmo trutta L.) start their exogenous feeding in March/April. This stage is a critical step as individuals undergo huge physiological and behavioral changes. To allow a good development and a high survival rate, prey has to be abundant, particularly during early ontogenesis when they are most vulnerable to food scarcity and predation. In this thesis, experiments in controlled-environment were conducted to estimate the effect of water velocity on the preferred prey taxa for salmonids and to understand the effect of temperature on the metabolism of alevins facing starvation. Experiments in semi-natural conditions were set up to better understand the effects of floods on invertebrate communities and on survival, behavior and growth of first-feeding alevins. Our data support that floods affect trout differently depending on when they start feeding (early or late spring) and the availability of prey in their environment

Full textThis master thesis analyses the effectiveness of social campaigns on the Web that attempt to motivate youth to vote. Political apathy among young adults led us to try to understand how social campaigns reach their public and what stakes are involved in the process. The 2011 Canadian elections were a perfect opportunity to analyse such campaigns given that Internet tools were created to encourage Canadians to vote, the most notable being the Vote compass. With theories on the influence of medias and theories of persuasion, we will trace a portrait of how the Internet can help social mobilization. First, a survey allowed us to understand to what degree young adults were familiar with these Internet tools and if they appreciated them. Then, focus groups were conducted for a better understanding of political apathy and to evaluate the relevance of such social campaigns to motivate youth to vote. Results allowed us to conclude that social campaigns on the Internet could be used as educational tools to foster solid awareness of citizenship issues and that they can profit from social networks such as Facebook and Twitter.
