Klein, Scott W., and Michael Valdez Moses, eds. A Modernist Cinema. Oxford University Press, 2021. http://dx.doi.org/10.1093/oso/9780199379453.001.0001.

Full text
Abstract:
In A Modernist Cinema, edited by Scott W. Klein and Michael Valdez Moses, sixteen distinguished scholars in the field of the New Modernist Studies explore the interrelationships among modernism, cinema, and modernity. Focusing on several culturally influential films from Europe, America, and Asia produced between 1914 and 1941, this collection of essays contends that cinema was always a modernist enterprise. Examining the dialectical relationship between a modernist cinema and modernity itself, these essays reveal how the movies represented and altered our notions and practices of modern life, as well as how the so-called crises of modernity shaped the evolution of filmmaking. Attending to the technical achievements and formal qualities of the works of several prominent directors—Giovanni Pastrone, D. W. Griffith, Sergei Eisenstein, Fritz Lang, Alfred Hitchcock, F. W. Murnau, Carl Theodor Dreyer, Dziga Vertov, Luis Buñuel, Yasujiro Ozu, John Ford, Jean Renoir, Charlie Chaplin, Leni Riefenstahl, and Orson Welles—these essays investigate several interrelated topics: how a modernist cinema represented and intervened in the political and social struggles of the era; the ambivalent relationship between cinema and the other modernist arts; the controversial interconnection between modern technology and the new art; the significance of representing the mobile human body in a new medium; the gendered history of modernity; and the transformative effects of cinema on modern conceptions of temporality, spatial relations, and political geography. The contributors are Richard Begam, Maurizia Bascagli, Enda Duffy, Laura Frost, Andrzej Gąsiorek, Scott W. Klein, Douglas Mao, Laura Marcus, Jesse Matz, Tyrus Miller, Michael Valdez Moses, Michael North, Elizabeth Otto, Carrie J. Preston, Lisa Siraganian, and Michael Wood.

McBride, Spencer W. Joseph Smith for President. Oxford University Press, 2021. http://dx.doi.org/10.1093/oso/9780190909413.001.0001.

Full text
Abstract:
In 1844, Joseph Smith, the controversial founder of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, had amassed a national following of some 25,000 believers—and a militia of some 2,500 men. In this year, his priority was protecting the lives and civil rights of his people. Having failed to win the support of any of the presidential contenders for these efforts, Smith launched his own renegade campaign for the White House, one that would end with his assassination at the hands of an angry mob. Smith ran on a platform that called for the total abolition of slavery, the closure of the country’s penitentiaries, the re-establishment of a national bank to stabilize the economy, and most importantly, an expansion of protections for religious minorities. Spencer W. McBride tells the story of Smith’s quixotic but consequential run for the White House and shows how his calls for religious freedom helped to shape the American political system we know today.

Pinder, Kymberly N. Black Liberation Theology, Black Power, and the Black Arts Movement at Trinity United Church of Christ. University of Illinois Press, 2017. http://dx.doi.org/10.5406/illinois/9780252039928.003.0004.

Full text
Abstract:
This chapter examines the Black Mural Movement in the context of religious imagery by focusing on the evolution of Joseph W. Evans Jr.'s art. In 1986 Evans illustrated the motto of Chicago's Trinity United Church of Christ (TUCC), “Unashamedly Black and Unapologetically Christian” with a painting of a Jesus with dark brown skin and tightly curled black hair, his arms outstretched around a smiling African American family. This image of a black Christ was Evans's vision of being black and Christian. In the 1970s Evans joined TUCC, where the pastor, Jeremiah Wright Jr., promoted Black Liberation Theology and recommended specific texts and sermons for the artist to study that transformed his conception of Christ. This chapter first considers black theology and pan-Africanism at TUCC before discussing the influence of the Black Arts Movement and the muralist William Walker on Chicago. It also assesses the impact, in terms of style and content, of the murals on Chicago's South Side on Evans's work and concludes with an overview of TUCC's stained glass program.

Abstract:
Abstract This book provides a detailed look at how the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints lifted its long-standing ban barring Black men from the priesthood and Black families from access to Mormon temples. Adapting a Protestant teaching that Black people bore a divine curse, and reinforced by a unique Latter-day teaching that Black people were “less valiant” in a pre-earth existence, these twin teachings became the fulcrum that underpinned the church’s priesthood and temple ban. The book discusses how the ban began in 1852 under the church’s second prophet-president, Brigham Young, and ended in 1978 under the church’s twelfth prophet-president, Spencer W. Kimball. The book further highlights how the ban collided with efforts to globalize the church following the Second World War, why it forced LDS church leaders to resist the civil rights movement, why it prompted dozens of universities to boycott Brigham Young University athletic competitions, and, finally, why it led federal authorities to investigate BYU for alleged violations of the Civil Rights Act of 1964. The book also details how perceived threats from the Jimmy Carter administration to revoke the church’s tax exemption status provoked a swift backlash from critics who claimed that the church lifted the ban out of political expedience. The final third of the book probes how public pressure led church leaders to repudiate Mormon racial teachings in a seminal essay called “Race and the Priesthood.”

Messer-Kruse, Timothy. Race Relations in the United States, 1980-2000. Greenwood, 2008. http://dx.doi.org/10.5040/9798216004103.

Full text
Abstract:
In the 1980s, many Americans began to believe that racial problems and institutional discrimination were a thing of the past, but the race issue turned out to be as divisive and powerful as it had ever been. Major events related to race included the Reagan/Carter presidential race, Jesse Jackson's 1984 presidential campaign, the Tawana Brawley case, and President George H. W. Bush's manipulation in his 1998 presidential campaign of convict Willie Horton. The 1990s saw the Immigration Act of 1990 allowing more Asians into the United States, the Anita Hill testimony against the first black U.S. Supreme Court Justice, the Rodney King beating in Los Angeles, and the Million Man March. This volume is THE content-rich source in a desirable decade-by-decade organization to help students and general readers understand the crucial race relations of the recent past. Race Relations in the United States, 1980-2000 provides comprehensive reference coverage of the key events, influential voices, race relations by group, legislation, media influences, cultural output, and theories of inter-group interactions. The volume covers two decades with a standard format coverage per decade, including Timeline, Overview, Key Events, Voices of the Decade, Race Relations by Group, Law and Government, Media and Mass Communications, Cultural Scene, Influential Theories and Views of Race Relations, Resource Guide. This format allows comparison of topics through the decades. The bulk of the coverage is topical essays, written in a clear, encyclopedic style. Historical photos, a selected bibliography, and index complement the text.
