Abstract:
lbums and Jeju-do’s tourist brochures issued from 1960s to 1980s. It, therefore, examines how the visual typicality of Jeju-do has been created. The period suggested by this study was an inflection point in which the economy and culture of it were changed and the government-led tourist policy for transforming Jeju-do into a destination which is attractive enough to be called the ‘Oriental Hawaii’ was developed. The tourist image produced in the period was successful in promoting Jeju-do as an exotic island. The most prominent characteristics of such tourist photos, however, is that they continuously and repeatedly use the same material. Such images have formed the typicality of Jeju-do, as they have been actively used until a recent time in explaining Jeju-do. In conclusion, it would show how Jeju-do is visually perceived, as the tourist industry is changed, by analyzing the stereotyped tourist images of Jeju-do by each period, which are printed in Jeju-do’s tourist brochures and tourist photo albums. It aims to describe them as a field in which images can be exchanged, beyond visual materials for tourism.

Abstract:
This study examines the establishment and operation of Jeju Island fishermen’s associations during the Japanese colonial era. Fishermen’s associations began to be established under the Joseon Fishery Ordinance and the Fishermen’s Associations Rule promulgated by the Japanese Government General of Korea in 1912, and the number of fishermen’s associations had since increased to approximately 200 by 1942. The first fishermen’s association established in Jeju Island is Woljeong-ri Fishermen’s Association in Woljeong-ri, Gujwa-myeon in 1916. The association was founded by Park Seong-il and other villagers as the anchovy fishery in Woljeong-ri had the largest catch in Jeju Island. Later, the Chuja-do Fishermen’s Association was established in 1919; the Jeju Island Haenyeo’s Association in 1920; and the Seogwi Fishermen’s Association in 1925. The 1929 promulgation of the Joseon Fishery Ordinance led to the establishment of myeon-unit fishermen’s associations in Jeju Island in the 1930s. Members of fishermen’s associations in Jeju Island protested against the tyranny of fishermen’s associations, as seen in the 1926 uprising by fishermen from the Chuja-do Fishermen’s Association and the 1932 anti-Japanese movement by haenyeo from the Jeju Island Fishermen’s Association. The study on Jeju Island fishermen’s associations will provide an opportunity to learn about the modern history of Jeju Island through fishermen’s associations.

Abstract:
This is a study on the aspects of changes in secondary education that appeared in the establishment of secondary schools in Jeju area immediately after liberation. At that time, Jeju was a representative region showing the expansion of secondary schools. During the Japanese colonial period, there were only two regular middle schools, but by 1949, the number of regular middle schools increased to ten. This indicates that the inherent demand of Jeju-do residents for secondary education surfaced immediately after liberation and the meaning of changes in secondary education can be determined through the aspects of school establishment. Immediately after liberation, secondary schools in Jeju showed the aspects of reorganization from non-regular private middle schools to regular middle schools. The rapid increase in the number of middle schools in Jeju area after 1945 was made possible due to the internal sympathy of local community for the expansion of secondary education. After the second half of 1946, the administrative organizations expanded and the institutionalization of middle schools was carried out with the implementation of the Jeju-do provincial system and the U. S. military government’s new school system. At that time, the reorganization of the system into regular schools enabled not only the administrative authorities to strengthen the administrative power, but also made it easy for students with academic background of secondary school to enter into higher education or get a job. Many middle schools established immediately after liberation were gradually reorganized into regular middle schools in the system, which became the foundation of secondary schools in Jeju.

Abstract:
Following the regional media reports on introduction planning of domestic for-profit hospitals in Jeju Special Self-Governing Province in June 5. 2008. there had been social and political arguments nationwide for and against the establishment of for-profit hospitals. However, the dispute is expected to be repeated again in 2009. even several times in the future. In these circumstances. analysis and evaluation are needed on the past experiences related to policy issues of introducing domestic for-profit hospitals in Jeju. Therefore. the present study aims to discuss and clarify major policy issues on arguments for and against the establishment of for-profit hospitals in Jeju Special Self-Governing Province. In this review, author introduce the concepts of macro-efficiency, Quality of health care, equity of medical care utilization, and regional economic developments in the process of analysing the impacts of the introduction of domestic for-profit -hospitals in Jeju. The results of this study are as followings. First the introduction of domestic for-profit hospitals in Jeju Special Self-Governing Province is closely connected to nationwide Free Economic Zones, and thus it is considered as the introduction of domestic for-profit-hospitals on a national scale. Second. the strongest driving force of introducing domestic for-profit hospitals is private insurance capital in Korea. Third. For-profit hospital has nothing to do with Quality medical care. Forth, the establishment of domestic for-profit hospitals lowers the macro-efficiency and equity of medical utilization. Filth, the establishment of domestic for-profit hospitals does not have an aclual effect on regional economic developments in Jeiu. Both residents' health and regional economy are essential elements inachieving future prospects of the newly emerging Jeju Special Self-Governing Province. There is no evidence that the introduction of domestic for-profit hospitals has a positive impact on residents' health and regional economy in Jeju. Also, in July 24-25. 2008. Jeiu residents rejected fhe governor's proposal of introducing domestic for-profit hospitals in Jeju because of anxiety about higher costs and inequity of medical careTherefore, both central and Jeju provincial governments need to take into much more consideration the introduction of domestic for-profit hospitals in both aspects of policy justification and substantial political democracy.

The physiological and biochemical responses to air exposure were analyzed in jeju, Hoplerythrinus unitaeniatus at 1(T1), 6 (T6) and 12 (T12) hours of exposure and 1 (TR1) e 6 (TR6) hours after returning to water environment. Plasma cortisol and glucose were significantly higher than those of control group (T0) after 1 and 6 hours and 1, 6 and 12 hours of air exposure, respectively. Acid-base and ionic unbalances during air exposure were evidenced by plasma pH and Na+ and K+ concentration following pH recovery as fish returned to water environment. Ammonia accumulation was found in all experimental groups increasing continuously during air exposure (from 102.20 nmol/mL in T0 to 339.53 nmol/mL in T12). During the recovery period in water there was a reduction in plasma ammonia concentration but it was significantly higher than the controls. Plasma lactate showed a slightly increase during air exposure and was significantly higher than the controls only 1 hour after recovery in water (from 4115.42 nmol/mL in T0 to 6423.84 nmol/mL in TR1) while piruvate increased after 6 hour in water (from 171.87 nmol/mL in T0 para 243.96 nmol/mL in TR6). Hematocrit, red blood cells, hemoglobin concentration and mean corpuscular hemoglobin concentration increased significantly during air exposure. On the first hour of air exposure the lipid hydroperoxide (HP) increased. There was a reduction of catalase (CAT) and superoxide dismutase (SOD) activity and an increase of glutathione peroxidase (GPX) during air exposure. Air exposure can be characterized as an stressor agent to H. unitaeniatus and imply in physiological adjustments to keep the O2 transfer from air to tissue and homeostasis as well as energy mobilization.

The present study anlyzed the in vivo and in vitro responses of the ventricular myocardium obtained from Hoplerythrinus unitaeniatus acclimated and tested at 25 ºC. The in vivo heart rate (fH bpm) was obtained (ECG recordings at lead DI of the electrocardiography) from electrodes inserted at cardiac region. Recordings of the isometric contraction force (Fc %) and time-dependent parameters (TPT time to peak tension; THR time to half relaxation) were obtainded in vitro from ventricle strips electrically paced in response to changes in stimulation frequency, extracelular Ca2+ and adrenaline concentrations, and ryanodine (blocker of the sarcoplasmic reticulum SR). The species presented resting fH values of 29.3 ± 0.31 bpm. The increase in twitch force following addition of crescent Ca2+ concentrations to the medium evidenced the importance of the extracellular Ca2+ for the heart contraction. Significant changes in the time-dependent parameters after increments in the Ca2+ extracellular concentration were not recorded. The post rest tension was analyzed with and without addition of 10 µM ryanodine to the medium. A significant post rest potentiation was recorded for the control preparations (100 to 168.3 ± 11.44 %). However, this post rest potentiation was inhibited by ryanodine (100 to 108.6 ± 4.7 %). The impact of increases in the imposed contraction frequency caused a decline of Fc, TPT and THR in frequencies ≥ 0.4 Hz. During increases in frequency, the pre-treatment with ryanodine decreased force only at the highest frequency (38 % at 1.2 Hz), while TPT decreased at 0.6 Hz and THR remained constant. The combination of ryanodine and a tonic level of adrenaline (10-9 M) did not prevent the force decline as frequency was increased. Adrenergic stimulation with a high level of adrenaline (10-6 M) after pretreatment with ryanodine caused positive inotropy in a magnitude that ameliorated the negative inotropic effect of ryanodine. In conclusion, H. unitaeniatus seems to present well-developed intracellular stores of activator Ca2+, resembling those of mammals rather than of terrestrial ectothermic vertebrates. As a difference, this species also depends on extracellular sources of Ca2+ which provide more flexibility to modulate the contraction force.
In vivo, a fH obtida foi 29,3 ± 0,31 bpm.

Abstract:
The main goal of this thesis is develop a new multifractal nowcasting approach based on radar data, particularly for extreme events. Whereas the previous attempts where based on scalar cascades focused on the rain rate, this thesis will take into account the vector velocity field (and its multifractal variability, e.g. of its horizontal divergence), as well the terrain complexity and the consequent orographic effects. It will take hold on recent development of multivariate multifractal techniques (Schertzer and Tchiguirinskaia, 2015) that makes theoretically possible to represent together the advecting velocity field and the advected scalar field. However, there are still large uncertainties on the choice of the adequate class of models and their parameters, comparison with mesoscale models will be therefore quite helpful. The first stage of this thesis will be devoted to drastically reduce these uncertainties with the help of empirical data analyses, as well as possible theoretical insights (e.g. connectivity properties) and comparison with mesoscale models (e.g. selected key mechanism). The second stage will be devoted to develop and test a concrete nowcasting procedure based on these findings and attempting to use at best the radar data (including their Doppler information) and numerical weather prediction products

Abstract:
Vol. 1 Typhoon Kingdom: Major Work -- Vol. 2 Writing at the Intersection of Trauma and Haunting: Narrative Representations of Korean “Comfort Women” in English: Exegesis
Major Work: Typhoon Kingdom In 1653, the Dutch East India Company’s Sparrowhawk is wrecked on a Korean island, and Hae-jo, a local fisherman, guides the ship’s bookkeeper to Seoul in search of his surviving shipmates. The two men, one who has never ventured to the mainland and the other unable to speak the language, are soon forced to choose between loyalty to each other and a king determined to maintain his country’s isolation. Three hundred years later, in the midst of the Japanese occupation, Yoo-jin is taken from her family and forced into prostitution, and a young soldier must navigate the Japanese surrender and ensuing chaos of the Korean War to find her. Based on the seventeenth-century journal of Hendrick Hamel and testimonies of surviving Korean “Comfort Women,” “Typhoon Kingdom” connects two narratives through an examination of language, foreignness and traumatic haunting. The novel seeks to make a unique creative contribution to the small body of literature in English representing the diverse and traumatic experiences of Korean “Comfort Women” and the tumultuous history of the Korean peninsula. Exegesis: Writing at the Intersection of Trauma and Haunting: Narrative Representations of Korean “Comfort Women” in English An examination of narrative representations of the traumatic experiences of Korean “Comfort Women” that explores a new way of reading and writing about literatures on the subject. Chapter One provides an historical context examining events and their forgetting. Chapter Two presents shamanic performance as a seemingly eruptive and counter-hegemonic force that transcends the familiar confines of ritual to enact a communal memory and provide a means of engagement with historical trauma and its ghosts. And Chapter Three asks how Nora Okja Keller’s Comfort Woman and Chang-rae Lee’s A Gesture Life exemplify the unsettling power of writing at this intersection of trauma and haunting.
