Full textThe subject of my thesis bears on the relations between the Church and the State in Poland from the monopole beginning of the Second World War until the breakdown of 1989. It is centered on the liberating words of John Paul II. One aspect of this destruction process of the communist dictatorship, introduced and imposed by the sovietic political power in Poland, has been the influence of the Church and in particular that of the Primate of Poland, Stefan Wyszyński and of the Archbishop of Cracovia, Karol Wojtyła. The latter's visits, once he became Pope, in 1979, 1983 and 1987, are set as a triple carrier of freedom ( on an individual scale), of relieving the burden of totalitarism ( on a social scale) and of the sovietic grip (on a national scale) Wojtyła, once he became John Paul II, operated thanks to a Word which produced a sensitiv effect and exerted a real, moral and intellectual, influence on the people. For this work, I examined the concept of «performative Word» ( that is to say a Word which has the strength to act by itself), used by Wojtyła, and of its impact on the individual, on society, on the nation at large

Full textOur Doctoral Thesis is an interpretation of Karol Wojtyla’s philosophical work “Osoba i czyn” (in English Person and Act). In hispreface the author describes his work as emanating not only from his research on Max Scheler, but also as originating from aquestion that arose “from the mind of the one whom”, while writing on St. Thomas, “was at the same time studying him.” Thepresent study of this phenomenological text tries to arrive at a better understanding of the reader of St. Thomas as he develops hiswork. Wojtyla’s philosophical influences include John of the Cross and Max Scheler, as well as Thomas Aquinas. These allcontribute to an understanding of the author of Person and Act. The examination of these works, along with Person and Act, leadsto the revelation of the importance of love, which is however only mentioned at the end of the latter text. For Wojtyla, the mysticismof John of the Cross, in which love has a central role, is completely in accordance with Thomistic doctrine. This doctrine is thenenriched by taking into account the reality as experienced by the subject. In Schelerian phenomenology, where the person revealshimself in the act of love, Wojtyla found here what he thought was precisely lacking in St. Thomas. But he noted that Scheler’semotionalism leads to an error arising from “the radical separation between the person’s actions and his love.” In Person and Act,Wojtyla, by applying the Thomistic doctrine of actus humanus, is able to correct the weakness inherent in Schelerian thought. Thework’s Carmelitan Thomism suggests a certain anti-Thomistic methodology which is paradoxically consistent with Thomisticdoctrine. Like the mystic himself, Person and Act can thus be interpreted as the description of a practical exercise of knowledge ofthe person in action: an exercise which is a way of love, or, more precisely, a way of dark ecstasy where love itself is knowledge

Full textChurch and State have the same field of action in common: the national and international setting. Their mission is to promote the common wellbeing of mankind, to give meaning to life and to create the proper environment for the fulfillment of human safety. However, politicians have always had the tendency to relieve themselves from the religious point of view, and to turn their back on the transcendental source which the religions safe keep. In fact, this separation of the religious and of the political creates complex and conflicting situations. The re enchantment of religion in secular democracies is the signature of complex but necessary relationships between the religious and the political. Thus, the boundary between worldly and spiritual matters remains hard to define; alliances and misalliances of the religious and the political greatly influence the security and peace problematic. So what contributions can the religion, in this instance the catholic Church, bring to the security and peace problematic?John Paul II pontificate initiated a world scale project in favor of the defense of human rights and dignity. His several trips during which the religious and political dimensions echo each others, his numerous encyclical letters, his homilies, his allocutions in front of representatives of international instances and his bold and daring opinions are characteristic of John Paul II exception in a world longing for peace and security. With him, the catholicity of the Church expressed itself daily and unveiled the specific character of its mission to serve humanity as well as of salvation through Jesus-Christ. By claiming human rights for all, the pope stresses a category of rights altogether the most universal and the most vilified in political systems, in this case Marxism. John-Paul II is credited of all-out interventionist political actions and of extremely diverse presence. Far from inferring a disorganized scattering, his mind is unified and centered around man as the central and foremost value and as the focal point of all his attentions
