Academic literature on the topic 'Jean de Nostredame'

A review of several origin myths relating to the creation of medieval Occitan lyric poetry. We see a preference for a “great man theory” of origins, though the “great man” may be a fictional woman. Medieval and early Renaissance Occitan authors, including Uc de Saint Circ, Guilhem Molinier, and Jean de Nostredame, used differing origin myths to validate literature in a language that was perceived not to carry the prestige of twelfth- and thirteenth-century Latin or fifteen- and sixteenth-century French.

Dans le cadre des renaissances europeennes du xvie siecle, la provence s'illustre par un corpus litteraire de premier plan. Des 1550, un certain nombre d'oeuvres (en francais et en occitan) voient le jour. Le premier de ces ecrivains, jean de nostredame (15221577) ecrit en occitan la premiere version d'une histoire de provence (les memoires transcrits dans cette these). Il traduit cette histoire en francais et y ajoute de nombreux chapitres. Parallement a cette recherche, il publie en 1575 les vies des plus celebres et anciens poetes provencaux. L'oeuvre de nostredame temoigne egalement des conditions sociolinguistiques et sociolitteraires qui caracterisent la procence du xvie siecle. Le francais prend de plus en plus d'importance et l'occitan perd peu a peu ses divers champs d'ecriture. La langue d'oc est confinee a des usages particuliers et des thematiques litteraires limitees. Au xvie siecle, l'ecriture d'oc s'affirme alors que les conditions d'ecriture des ecrivains se deteriorent. Within the literary renaissances in sixteenth-century europe. The provence region was the birthiplace of a prominent literary production. As early as 1550 a number of works were written in occitan or in french. The first among such writers was hea de nostredame (1522-1577) who wrote the first occitan version of a history of provence. Les memoires, the edited manuscript to be found in the present thesis. When tranbslating that history into french, jean de jostredame added many new chapters. Alobgisde this historical resarch work, he published les vies des plus celebres et anciens poetes provencaux. . . In 1575. Jean de nostredame's works illustrate the socio-literary and sociolinguistic conditions that are charateristic of 16th-century provence; while french was increasing its domination, the occitan language was gradually losing ground in the various forms of writings. Consequently the scope of occitan was reduced to a particular usage and limited literary themes. Altough the occitan renaissance gained momentum in the sixteenth century. Provencal writers found it more and more difficult to write precisely because of that sociolinguistic situation. In this respect, jean de nostredame's work, both literary and historiographical, exemplifies that renaissance and that situation
