Forero Montoya, Betsy. Foreign Otherness in Japanese Media. Exploring the Japanese self through the images of Latin America. Ediciones Uniandes, 2121. http://dx.doi.org/10.51566/ceper2117_55.

Full text
Abstract:
Foreign Otherness in Japanese Media analyzes contemporary Japanese society by examining the ways in which Japanese media portrays Latin America and therefore how Japanese readers construct their idea of it. Offering a detailed methodology and results from field research, and based on concepts such as otherness, cultivation analysis and the theory of the autopoietic social system as a framework, this book considers the impact of mass media on the construction of non-dominant foreign cultural subjectivities in Japan, and explores the dynamics of otherness in the country. As such, it is apt for scholars in Japanese studies, media studies, and anyone interested in the interaction between foreigners or Latin Americans and Japan, or in relations between mainstream society and minority groups.

Duran, Angelica, Islam Issa, and Jonathan R. Olson, eds. Milton in Translation. Oxford University Press, 2017. http://dx.doi.org/10.1093/oso/9780198754824.001.0001.

Full text
Abstract:
Milton in Translation is an unprecedented collaboration that demonstrates the breadth of John Milton’s international reception from the seventeenth century through today. The volume presents new essays on the translation of Milton’s works written by an international roster of experts. Chapters are grouped geographically but also, by and large, chronologically. The chapters on the twenty-three individual languages are framed by an introduction and two major chapters on the global reach and the aural nature of Milton’s poetry at the beginning, and an epilogue at the end: ‘Part II: Influential Translations’ (English, Latin, German, French); ‘Part III: Western European and Latin American Translations’ (Dutch, Estonian, Finnish, Icelandic, Italian, Portuguese, European Spanish, Latin American Spanish), ‘Part IV: Central and Eastern European Translations’ (Bulgarian, Czech, Hungarian, Polish, Serbian/Montenegrin, Serbo-Croatian languages), ‘Part V: Middle Eastern Translations’ (Arabic, Hebrew, Persian), and ‘Part VI: East Asian Translations’ (Chinese, Japanese, Korean).

Doerr-Zegers, Otto, and Héctor Pelegrina-Cetrán. Karl Jaspers’ General Psychopathology in the framework of clinical practice. Oxford University Press, 2013. http://dx.doi.org/10.1093/med/9780199609253.003.0005.

Full text
Abstract:
Jaspers Psychopathology (1913) encompasses all areas of psychiatry and delves deeply into psychology and philosophy. From the beginning it has had a great repercussion in European, Japanese, Latin American and finally, in the English speaking psychiatry. Jaspers greatest achievement was to establish psychopathology as a hard science and the basis of psychiatry as professional practice. He did this from strictly methodological perspective. Besides, he aspired to consider the patient and his psychopathological manifestations on the horizon of the totality of existence. To summarize his contributions would be practically impossible. Therefore, these authors have focused this chapter on some particular topics of his work, such as the introduction of phenomenological method; the development of the method of understanding in contrast to explanation; the concepts of process and development; the overcoming of stimulus/response scheme for conceptualizing the man-world relationship and its replacement by his revolutionary concept of “situation”; and finally, the introduction of dialectical thinking in psychopathology and psychiatry.

Monga, Célestin, and Justin Yifu Lin, eds. The Oxford Handbook of Structural Transformation. Oxford University Press, 2019. http://dx.doi.org/10.1093/oxfordhb/9780198793847.001.0001.

Full text
Abstract:
This book examines a variety of topics relating to structural transformation, such as why such transformations are associated with persistently high unemployment; the ‘flying-geese’ theory introduced by Japanese economist Kaname Akamatsu in the mid-1930s; mutual, two-way dependence of structural transformation and food security; a competitiveness-based view of structural transformation; the link between world trade and structural change from 1800 to present; the relationship between financial reforms, financial development, and structural change; sustainable structural change in the context of global value chains; and the commonly used strategies to build effective clusters and industrial parks. The book also discusses the specific problems that arise when composing an index of structural change and development, and suggests ways to address them; how structural change can be formally modelled in New Structural Economics (NSE); and some of the key elements of the knowledge accumulated in development economics. Furthermore, it identifies three key economic forces that drive structural transformation: the first emphasizes income effects, while the other two both emphasize relative price effects. The experiences of regions and countries such as Latin America, the West African Economic and Monetary Union (WAEMU), India, Egypt, Viet Nam, China, Korea, Taiwan, Ethiopia, and Tanzania with respect to structural transformation are also analysed. Finally, the book considers what is harmful in the existing structures, what goals we want any new structures to serve, and what structures would serve the chosen goals.
