Abstract:
Object. Among patients with aneurysms, those with heterozygous (T/C) endothelial nitric oxide synthase (eNOS) T-786C single nucleotide polymorphism (SNP), a mutation reducing endothelial nitric oxide synthesis, are reported to have larger ruptured intracranial aneurysms (IAs) than those with homozygous (C/C or T/T) genotype. The authors tested patients harboring aneurysms for eNOS T-786C SNP in two populations—Japanese and Korean. Methods. The eNOS T-786C SNP was genotyped through direct sequencing in genomic DNA obtained from 336 Japanese and 191 Korean patients with IAs and 214 Japanese and 191 Korean control volunteers. Differences in genotype frequencies among the various aneurysm sizes were evaluated using the Fisher exact test. There was no significant difference in heterozygous (T/C) eNOS T-786C SNP between aneurysms 5 mm or smaller and those from 6 to 9 mm, and between lesions 5 mm or smaller and those 10 mm or larger in 336 Japanese patients harboring aneurysms—220 with ruptured and 116 with unruptured lesions—and in 191 Korean patients with ruptured aneurysms. Conclusion. The eNOS T-786C SNP genotype does not influence the size of aneurysms.

Abstract:
(Title: Shintoism Reflection InOmamori) Shinto handed down from generation to the next generation. Shintoism have had a strong influence on the lives of Japanese people, from festival activities to objects in their surroundings. Omamori is known as one form of that influence and became a culture part of the harmonization of the Shintoism and Buddhism. As one of the sacred objects which are still trusted by Japanese people, the existence of omamori is so popular even in modern society. Through a literature review, this article aims to describe what parts of the omamori are a reflection of Shintoism. The results obtained show that the reflection can be seen among others in the omamori user's belief in the existence of kamisama (Gods), and evil spirits, also can be seen from the material of the omamori itself.

Abstract:
Carbon isotopes (14C and 13C) of dissolved organic carbon (DOC) in a Japanese oligotrophic lake (Lake Towada) were measured to study the origin and cycling of dissolved organic matter (DOM) in Lake Towada. Lake water samples were collected at 3 depths (0, 30, and 80 or 85 m) during 4 months (April, June, August, and October) in 2006. 14C measurements of DOC were performed by accelerator mass spectrometry (AMS) at the National Institute for Environmental Studies (NIES-TERRA) in Japan. Δ14C and δ13C values of DOC in Lake Towada showed light carbon isotopic values ranging from –750 to −514‰ and –29.0 to –27.8‰, respectively. These values are similar to those of humic substances reported. The very low carbon isotopic values of DOC in Lake Towada suggest a very small contribution of DOC derived from fresh phytoplankton to the lake DOC. There is an extremely high linear relationship between the Δ14C and δ13C of DOC in Lake Towada when all data points are plotted (r2 =0.818, p < 0.01), suggesting that the DOC in Lake Towada has 2 specific sources contributing heavy and light carbon isotopes. Although the freshly produced DOC of phytoplankton origin can be decomposed easily, the variation in the autochthonous DOC should influence the carbon isotopic values of DOC in Lake Towada.

Abstract:
Objective - When a major problem in governance policies creates great difficulties for the development of the global community, this has an influence of society’s awareness of concepts such as racism, discrimination and conflict issues which have an impact on the decision making process of future generations of multiracial and foreigner migrants. Identity of nationality can also be used to explain changes in the structure of a county. This research aims to: (1) study the variables of nationality decision making factors among multiracial Thai-Japanese groups in Thailand; (2) categorize the factor extraction of Exploratory Factor Analysis on nationality decision making of multiracial Thai-Japanese groups in Thailand; and (3) explore the relationships between important factors of nationality decision making factor units among multiracial Thai-Japanese groups in Thailand. Methodology/Technique – There were 685 valid respondents obtained using an online purposive sampling questionnaire survey in acknowledgement of organizations (Bangkok, Chon Buri & Chiangmai). The results indicate there are 3 factors of Thailand and 4 factors of Japan categorized for nationality decision making using exploratory factor analysis. Furthermore, the significance of each factor of Thailand and Japan affects nationality decision making. Finding - As a result of the binary logistic regression analysis, social structure, individual stability and country structure developments were identified as having a primary role in nationality decision making (Thai/Japanese/ and not decided or dual nationality). Novelty - The results enable an understanding of the Thai and Japanese international community transformation and development from the perspective of nationality decision making. Abstract:
SummaryEthnic differences in drug disposition may potentially influence therapeutic response to dabigatran, a reversible direct thrombin inhibitor used for the prevention and/or treatment of various thromboembolic disorders. This analysis of data from 18 clinical studies in healthy volunteers and patients with non-valvular atrial fibrillation (AF) or undergoing knee or hip arthroplasty investigated whether there were any clinically relevant differences in the pharmacokinetics and pharmacodynamics of dabigatran, the active form of dabigatran etexilate, between Japanese and Caucasian subjects. In pooled data from 14 phase I trials, total exposure (i.e. area under the plasma concentration-time curve [AUC]) after administration of dabigatran 150 mg once or twice-daily was on average 20% higher in Japanese than Caucasian subjects (median [10th to 90th percentile] 1,110 [644–1,824] vs. 924 [420–1,654] ng·h/ml) although the difference between the groups was not significant. Within-trial comparisons in subjects treated with dabigatran 150 mg twice-daily showed that AUC and maximum plasma concentration differed by less than 10% between the two groups. In patients with AF, trough concentrations after administration of 150 mg twice-daily were similar in Japanese and Caucasian subjects (80.1 [34.5–193.8] vs. 71.0 [34.0–190] ng/ml). Various factors, including body weight and renal clearance, may explain these observed pharmacokinetic differences. The relationship between plasma concentration and coagulation markers was similar and indicative of no difference in the exposure-pharmacodynamic response between these two groups. In conclusion, the results of this analysis show that the pharmacokinetics and pharmacodynamics of dabigatran are similar in Japanese and Caucasian subjects and suggest that there is no need for dose adjustment of dabigatran in Japanese subjects.

Abstract:
The objective of this study was to assess the effect of the inclusion of passionflower (Passiflora alata) in diets on performance, behavior, heterophil/lymphocyte ratio (H/L), corticosterone plasma levels (CPL) and immune response of quails. The study was carried out using 192 birds, distributed in randomized blocks with 4 diets (0, 125, 250 and 375 and 0, 250, 500 and 750 mg of passionflower/kg of feed for the rearing and laying period, respectively), 8 replicates and 6 birds per experimental unit. The rearing period began when birds were 28 days of age and it lasted for 15 days. In this phase, it was evaluated daily feed intake, daily weight gain, feed conversion, viability, tonic immobility time, intensity of injuries, behavior, heterophil/lymphocyte ratio, and corticosterone plasma levels. Laying phase started when birds were 43 days of age and it finished when they were 140 days of age; it was compesed of six 14-day cycles in which it evaluated feed intake, feed conversion, egg production and quality, viability, tonic immobility time, intensity of injuries, behavior, heterophil/lymphocyte ratio, corticosterone plasma levels and immune response. In the rearing period, the use of passionflower in the diet of quails influenced the behavioral parameters, and the birds became calmer, mainly at the dosage of 375 mg/kg of ration. However, in the laying period, passionflower was efficient in reducing stress in the quails, and the most promising results are observed when higher dosages of the phytotherapic were applied. Nevertheless, the dose of 750 mg/kg of feeeding reduces egg production, though it does not influence quality of eggs neither immune response of the quails.

Abstract:
Background: Residual annatto seed meal (RASM) is a byproduct after extraction of bixin in the cosmetic industry and may be used in animal diets. Objective: Two experiments were carried out to determine the nutritive value and effect of RASM inclusion levels in the diets of Japanese quails. Methods: For the digestibility experiment, 160 Japanese quails were distributed in a randomized study with two treatments and 10 replicates with eight birds each. The treatments consisted of a reference diet and a test diet containing 75% of the reference diet and 25% of RASM. For the performance assay, 192 Japanese quails were used in a randomized study with six treatments and four replicates with eight birds each. Treatments consisted of a control corn-based diet (Contr1) and another diet based on sorghum + canthaxanthin (Contr2), and four diets based on sorghum with increasing inclusion levels of RASM (0, 3, 6, and 9%). Results: Digestibility of dry matter and crude protein, metabolization coefficient of gross energy, and retention of calcium and phosphorus were 41.05, 43.12, 47.97, 25.49, and 30.35%, respectively. RASM inclusion did not influence bird productivity; however, feed conversion worsened in treatments with 0–6% RASM inclusion relative to that in Contr1. Yolk color increased due to RASM treatment. Conclusion: RASM may be included in sorghum-based diets for quails at 9%, with improvement in yolk color and no negative effects on productivity and egg quality.

Abstract:
ABSTRACTAreas affected by routine radiocarbon (14C) discharges from the Fukushima Dai-ichi Nuclear Power Plant (FDNPP) and accidental releases in March 2011 were investigated by analysis of cores from Japanese cypress and cedar trees growing at sites 9 and 24 km northwest of the plant. 14C concentrations in tree rings from 2008–2014 (before and after the accident) were determined by accelerator mass spectrometry, with 14C activities in the range 231–256 Bq kg−1 C. Activities during the period 2012–2014, after FDNPP shutdown, represent background levels, while the significantly higher levels recorded during 2008–2010, before the accident, indicate uptake of 14C from routine FDNPP operations. The mean excess 14C activity for the pre-accident period at the sites 9 and 24 km northwest of the plant were 21 and 12 Bq kg−1 C, respectively, indicating that the area of influence during routine FDNPP operations extended at least 24 km northwest. The mean excess tree-ring 14C activities in 2011 were 10 and 5.8 Bq kg−1 C at 9 and 24 km northwest, respectively, documenting possible impact of the FDNPP accident on 14C levels in trees.

Abstract:

Studies have proposed that the spreading activation (SA) theory (Colins, & Loftus, 1975) can explain the nature of L1 and L2 predictive sentence processing (e.g., Kaan, 2014). Research on processing in L2 English has found that word information triggers learners' semantically-driven predictive sentence processing (e.g., Hopp, 2015); however, to the best of my knowledge, few studies have been conducted in L2 Japanese. Additionally, what triggers L2 predictive sentence processing is yet to be fully discovered. Research has demonstrated that L1 English learners of Japanese as a foreign language (JFL) show cognate-like effects when English-based loanwords are used as primes in a cross-linguistic priming experiment if these loanwords retain their original English phonology and semantics (e.g., Allen, & Conklin, 2013), which suggests the existence of inter-lingual SA effects when learners process these loanwords. The purpose of the present study is to investigate whether SA effects induced by a loanword in a sentence can also facilitate learners' predictive sentence processing.

The present study investigated whether a loanword embedded in a sentence facilitates JFL learners' syntactic prediction. Twenty-six L1 English learners of JFL and eight native Japanese speakers participated in the study. In the experiment, they were presented with 20 fillers and 32 Japanese right-dislocated sentences ending with a noun followed by a postpositional particle. Among these 32 sentences, half of them had a loanword preceding a particle, whereas the other half had a non-loanword preceding a particle. At the end of each sentence, the subjects were asked to make an acceptability judgment, and reaction time (RT) was recorded for statistical analysis.

The results indicated that loanwords had a statistically significant facilitative influence on predicting their adjacent postpositional particle in sentences. This was especially true for the locative particle ni and the comitative particle to. Although the loanword-induced cross-linguistic SA effects on particle processing were inhomogeneous, the study sufficiently supported the hypothesis that loanwords can facilitate learners' predictive processing of subsequent particles, simultaneously providing evidence for the existence of SA effects in L2-Japanese sentence processing.

Full text
Abstract:
This thesis examines the influence of British and Japanese mercantile circles and other pressure groups upon the formation of the 1902 Anglo-Japanese Alliance in the period, 1894-1902. Contrary to the contemporary conception that the Alliance was concluded largely for the benefit of Japan, the thesis argues that Britain needed the Alliance more than Japan from a commercial perspective. The varied support for an alliance, incorporating business groups, naval experts and the press, provides evidence for this interpretation. Examination of the influence of such sectors has been somewhat neglected in the existing literature, owing to the alliance being assessed largely in strategic and diplomatic terms. The thesis argues that it was within the context of great power rivalry that such groups acted in fostering an atmosphere of Anglo-Japanese cooperation. British mercantile circles generally supported Japanese imperial policies in East Asia, especially in opening up new markets in East Asia and improving infrastructure in Korea and Taiwan. Compared to Britain, Japan's economic development was in her infancy. Together with the absence of serious commercial rivalry, this contributed towards the view held by many in Britain that an alliance would be beneficial in terms of protecting British interests. Whilst the Alliance was enthusiastically welcomed in Japan, the thesis argues that this owed little to Japanese mercantile circles, who, owing to the lack of substantial commercial interests in China, failed to recognize the Russian threat to Japanese interests. As a consequence, they did not see the necessity of an alliance with Britain. Nevertheless, the thesis argues that at official and commercial levels, Japan always wished to receive Britain's political and financial support for Japan's further development. The fundamental thrust of the thesis, based on an extensive primary source research in Japanese and British archives, is that commercial opinion and activities did contribute towards the conditions that made the Anglo-Japanese alliance possible.

De, Groot Henk W. K. "The Study Of The Dutch Language In Japan During Its Period Of National Isolation (ca. 1641-1868)." Thesis, University of Canterbury. Japanese, 2005. http://hdl.handle.net/10092/1015.

Full text
Abstract:
From the middle of the seventeenth century until 1853, the Japanese shogunal government virtually isolated Japan from the rest of the world. Only the Chinese and the Dutch were allowed to maintain a trading post in the harbour of Nagasaki. All dealings with the Dutch traders were subject to strict controls, and the interpreters that were trained to liaise with them had to swear a blood oath to secrecy. Nevertheless, information regarding the scientific and technological advances that were made in the West during this period managed to penetrate this barrier, and eventually grew, to some extent with official sanction, into a popular branch of scholarship known as rengeku, literally 'Dutch learning'. Since nearly all of the academic knowledge that reached Japan from the West arrived in written Dutch, the Dutch language became the language of science in Japan during this period, and a necessary subject of study for allrangaku scholars. This thesis is the first study in English that examines the development of the study of the Dutch language in Japan during the period through an analysis of the textbooks and dictionaries that were produced in Japan. The works selected for this study are those considered to be representative of, or significant to, the development of the study of Dutch and attendant increase of awareness of Western linguistic concepts, many of which were imposed, for better or worse, on the Japanese language. Other, less influential documents, are occasionally also discussed, to demonstrate the false trails and misunderstandings that can emerge when a foreign language is presented to students without the benefit of demonstrated current and practical usage. Initially Dutch language study was restricted to the development of skills among the Dutch interpreters in Nagasaki, who compiled word lists for personal use. These lists developed from primitive and limited glossaries into relatively sophisticated Chinesestyle lexicons and finally evolved into the large-scale Haruma dictionaries of the early nineteenth century. Early attempts at understanding the structures of the Dutch language, both by interpreters and academics, failed to provide practical insights. An important i breakthrough was achieved when retired interpreter Shizuki Tadao (1760-1806) began to produce translations of Nederduytsche Spraakkonst('Dutch Grammar') by William Sewel, and applied Western linguistic concepts to the Japanese language. This new understanding gave rise to a consistent structural approach to the study of Dutch, as a result of which language study became more consistent and translations more sophisticated. Although the end of national isolation in the middle of the nineteenth century meant that the study of Dutch was soon abandoned in favour of other European languages, many words in the Japanese language, particularly in relation to science and technology, are of Dutch origin. More importantly, many of the principles and terminology the Japanese use to define the structures of their language stem from the insights into Western linguistics gained during those final decades of the period of national isolation.
