Abstract:
The crisis facing Japan's banking sector has been attributed to a wide range of factors: (1) the run-up and collapse of the bubble; (2) a lack of adequate supervision of financial institutions by the government; (3) the stagnation of the economy, because the Japanese growth model is no longer relevant; and (4) bad management of the banks. It is important to reform corporate governance in the real sector, not merely in the financial sector. It should also be recognized that Japan's financial system should reduce the size of the safety net provided by the government not only through the deposit insurance system, but also through the enormous postal savings business.

Abstract:
Examining the development of the Japanese financial system since the Meiji era, Hoshi and Kashyap derive a number of interesting propositions on the evolution of bank-centered financing, its contribution to rapid growth, and its future transformation. They argue that the piecemeal approach to deregulation is one of the main reasons for the current banking crisis, and conclude that Japan will shift to a capital market-based financial system like the one in the United States or in prewar Japan. Hoshi and Kashyap's work makes an important contribution as a coherent long-term overview of Japan's bank-centered financial system.

Abstract:
We survey the macroeconomic stagnation and financial problems in Japan. The financial sector assessment includes separate analyses of the commercial banks, the life insurance companies and the government's fiscal investment and loan program (FILP). We estimate that the Japanese taxpayer will have to pay at least another ¥100 trillion (20% of GDP) to cover financial system losses. We explain how the current dysfunctional Japanese banking system misallocates funds by keeping many insolvent firms in business. These inefficient firms crowd out potentially profitable ones and worsen macroeconomic stagnation. A sustained macroeconomic recovery requires serious restructuring aimed at stopping this cycle.

Nos anos anteriores, o Japão era visto como o segundo país mais rico do mundo. O Japão, os Estados Unidos e a Área Euro foram considerados como uma tríade no mundo financeiro. No entanto, o crescimento econômico do Japão terminou abruptamente.
In previous years, Japan was seen as the second richest large economy in the world. Japan, the United States and the Euro area were considered as a triad in the financial world. However, its economic growth ended abruptly. This paper addresses the issues with the evolution of Japanese banks efficiency, compared to Germany and Switzerland. The analysis is developed by a panel of five of the biggest banks in Japan, Germany and Switzerland, for the time period between 2000 and 2014. In order to investigate the cost-efficiency evolution of banks, this paper employs the Data Envelopment Analysis (DEA) method. In addition to the efficiency analysis, a study on financial performance ratios was performed. The main findings point to the fact that the efficiency evolution of Japanese banks is mostly unstable. Furthermore, the realized analysis alludes that the Japanese banking sector is more efficient than Germany's, but less efficient than Switzerland's.

Abstract:
The objective of this study is to investigate how banks are working with information security by performing a comparative study between banks in Japan and Sweden. Special focus is given to the impact of organizational culture when developing IT-systems. The material analyzed is collected through semi-structured interviews with banks in Japan and Sweden, and additional interviews with professionals within the field of information security. The findings show that banks in both Japan and Sweden take information security seriously, both from a technical and an organizational culture point of view. They have implemented technological countermeasures and try to impose a safety culture by educating their employees. Organizational culture aspects are demonstrated to have a great impact on the development of IT systems from an information security perspective. The development process of IT systems are different between the countries, the Swedish banks have started to use the agile development method, while the Japanese banks still use the more traditional waterfall method. The result also implies that in Sweden there is an open climate and a greater trust between the banks which have lead to collaboration between the major banks and the development of innovative products. In Japan it is more difficult for the banks to create trustworthy relationships and share their information security knowledge to the same extent. The findings strengthen the notion in related research that cultural aspects have influence on how information security is managed.

ABSTRACT Thesis title: The Adoption of E-commerce in the Japanese Banking System Thesis introduction: In the past decades, Japan has been faced with the new phenomenon “e-commerce” ( electronic commerce ) which has spread like fire all over Asia, and even all around the world. Development in information technology and science has led to a situation where people’s desire for improvement has become even stronger, and this in turn has triggered the need for discussion and research to be felt more acutely. A country’s power and finance have always been dependent on its economic development, for example, today’s new electronic technology has already penetrated all the vital fields of agriculture, industry, business, medicine, and education. Therefore, this has knitted a very close and inevitable relationship between the development of the e-commerce and the daily life of each and every individual. Nowadays, enterprises and businesses have also started to make use of e-commerce in order to increase their efficiency and advantage in our new competitive era. This is especially true where the banking sector is concerned. Indeed, such an environment has left the Japanese banks with no choice but to follow the electronic trend if they want to raise their profitability. Their priorities are now no longer solely governed by interest rates, but also include improving their skills to an effective use of the electronic strategy in dealing with their customers. e.g Hitachi For a country to reach the status of an advanced nation, its economy has to be the backbone of such progress since it is the root of that country. As explained above, we can thus derive that a country’s root is that machine which has been given so much importance recently, in simple terms, the computer. The latter is present in all the different levels of society, and has caused the wide-spread usage of e-commerce as a way of making business dealings. Consequently, the aims of the above —mentioned thesis were set to: (1) Understand the adoption of e-commerce by the Japanese banking system. (2) Analyze the mechanisms through which the Japanese banking system makes use of e-commerce to reach their strategy’s objectives This research is using the study of practical examples, complimented with related information, and the understanding of how different banks’ (Japan Net Bank, Sony Bank, eBank) e-commerce management structure operate. It wishes to use these examples of e-commerce management strategy and bring them forward for a better understanding and application of similar strategies by other organizations. After thorough study and analysis the following 4 conclusions could be made: (1) Due to the Japanese economic recession, a wave of pessimism has swept over businesses, as the number of bankruptcy started to increase. One by one, companies have begun looking for new ways to survive and restructuring has become an unavoidable recognition. It is during this process that the banking sector has turned to e-commerce for future development. (2) High pressure due to bad debts: In order to solve the bad debts problem, the Japanese government has taken a series of measures to decrease the rising number of bad debts. Moreover, quite a lot of Japanese banks and businesses have already quietly entered a restructuring phase, as a preparation to face the new challenge of the 21st century. Enterprises have reached a stage where they can no longer use past successful experiences as reference, but, on the other hand, they have to look for innovative ways to succeeded. (3) Every major bank in Japan should set up measures and processes for restructuring: The year 1996 saw the beginning of the “Japanese Big Bang” , making financial structures very open and more subject to possible criticism. Facing international competitors, Japanese banks have to revolutionize and strengthen their tactics. Otherwise, abiding by former rules will cause a loss in productivity and competitivity, which will in turn lead to a situation where other more powerful international banks would acquire local ones. (4) After analysis and comparison of practical examples we can conclude that, internet banks must succeeded in the field of e-commerce and choosing the right strategies. The latter should be carefully examined and set after analysis of similar financial agencies or different types of organizations. Only then will e-commerce be promoted and lead to success.
