Abstract:
Pirandello as professional spectatorAbstractLuigio Pirandello’s drama were unfailingly popular with Polish directors between the beginningof the 1960s until the 1970s. Native creators have undertaken dramas from differentperiods of the Nobelist’s output and covering various topics – bourgeois comedy to metatheatricalworks. Most probably those do not include all that were staged then.It appears that an increased interest in the author is to be connected with the 25th anniversaryof his death, as is suggested by Mieczysław Brahmer in the 1961 Tak jest, jak się państwu zdaje(directed by Zofia Wiercińska). The fact that both then and now critics and researchers in the majority of cases assumed, notnecessarily consciously, they are writing about an artist that is mainly a writer and only thena critic of stage productions of his dramas and a stage producer for his own texts is significant. As a consequence they focused mainly on deconstructing the “pirandellism” condemned byBrahmer, in particular on its canonical interpretation by Adrian Tilgher. Therefore, the followingquestion comes to mind: what kind of interpretations are possible when Pirandello’sworks (especially the first part of the so-called trilogy of “theatre in a theatre” which consistsof Six Characters in Search of an Author, Each In His Own Way and Tonight We Improvise) areconsidered from the perspective of purpose, that is individual theatrical activity of Pirandelloas a co-founder, principal and stage producer of Teatro D’Arte in Rome (in operation between1924 and 1928). The present article attempts at showing the possible direction of a search foran answer to said question with the starting point being the 1962 production of Sześć postaciscenicznych w poszukiwaniu autora (Six Characters in Search of an Author) directed by MariaWiercińska in Stefan Jaracz Theatre in Łódź.Keywords: Pirandello in Poland, Maria Wiercińska, first theatre directors in Italy

Abstract:
In this project, I analyze women's humor in three of Jane Austen's novels: Pride and Prejudice, Mansfield Park, and Emma. Using speech-act theory, I specifically examine Elizabeth's, Emma's, and Mary's utterances to demonstrate that in order for humorous utterances to be subversive, they must challenge societal or patriarchal constructs (religion, misogynist men, marriage, the feminine ideal) and do so artfully. An indirect speech act--a play on words, an insult, even a laugh--is often far more effective than a more direct one, especially when wielded by characters for whom a direct antagonistic speech act would have severe social consequences. When those socially-sanctioned and highly-regulated speech acts--marriages, wills, introductions, invitations, letters, titles--are less accessible or less beneficial to women, only indirect speech acts remain a viable option.

Abstract:

In 1984, a group of famous British musicians came together to form the megagroup called Band Aid and released the holiday song “Do They Know It‟s Christmas?” to increase public awareness of the Ethiopian famine. A few months later, American musicians under the name United Support of Artists for Africa (U.S.A. for Africa) released the song “We Are the World” to raise money for these famine victims. Both songs were immensely popular and together created a new rhetorical form, the international musical philanthropy genre. Over twenty-five years after the release of these two songs, Sudanese recording artist Emmanuel Jal released his own song “We Want Peace” to raise public awareness for the Southern Sudanese vote for independence. This study examines the creation of the international musical philanthropy genre by analyzing and comparing the songs “Do They Know It‟s Christmas?” and “We Are the World”. This analysis also discusses the implications of the international musical philanthropy genre. After examining the effects of this new genre, this analysis then examines how the new song “We Want Peace” challenges and expands the international musical philanthropy genre

This qualitative action research study looked at my collaboration with a science teacher as we combined a Television Production class with an Advanced Placement Environmental Science class. This cross-curricular case study explored the implementation of the principles of media literacy, defined by the National Association for Media Literacy Education, into the science classroom where media literacy has traditionally been a non-factor. The impact of media and technology on everyone's daily lives is making it necessary for us to become media literate. The use of media literacy tools and strategies in a combined media production class and an AP science class created opportunities to explore cross-curricular understandings of media literacy education that would not have existed otherwise.

Abstract:
Some authors support that mental time travel is unique to humans. To their point of view, animals are not able to project themselves into the past of the future because they are bound into the present. Nevertheless, during the last 30 years, researchers have brought considerable knowledge on animals’ capacities to travel mentally through time. Even though opinions have evolved, the debate concerning the unicity of mental time travel is still on. My PhD thesis aimed at bringing further knowledge on this matter by focusing on an innovative aspect of episodic cognition in common cuttlefish, Sepia officinalis and Eurasian jay, Garrulus glandarius, namely, source-memory. Source-memory is the capacity to retrieve the origin of an episodic memory. Results showed that cuttlefish were able to perform a source-discrimination study, revealing that they were able to discriminate and retrieve their own perceptions after 3-hours delay. A study on jays’ capacity to encode incidentally a contextual information (contextual source) revealed unexpected differences between males and females. Investigation of future-oriented behaviour in cuttlefish showed that they were able to take a decision in the present according to previous encoded knowledge and according to future experimental conditions. A preliminary study also revealed promising results on cuttlefish capacity to anticipate their future needs. To finish, we explored and revealed for the first time the neuronal substrates of episodic-like memory in cuttlefish. Alltogether, these results provide new knowledge on mental time travel in cuttlefish and in jays, suggesting that this capacity would have evolved under different environmental contraints

Full text
Abstract:

Abstract:
The multi-volume work Syntax of Dutch presents a synthesis of current thinking on Dutch syntax. The text of the seven already available volumes was written between 1995 and 2015 and issued in print between 2012 and 2016. The various volumes are primarily concerned with the description of the Dutch language and, only where this is relevant, with linguistic theory. They will be an indispensable resource for researchers and advanced students of languages and linguistics interested in the Dutch language. This volume is the final one of the series and addresses issues relating to coordination. It contains three chapters. Chapter 1 discusses the syntactic and semantic properties of coordinate structures and their constituting elements, that is, the coordinators and the coordinands they link. Chapter 2 discusses the types of ellipsis known as conjunction reduction and gapping found in coordinate structures. Chapter 3 discusses elements seemingly exhibiting coordination-like properties, such as dan ‘than’ in comparative constructions like Jan is groter dan zij ‘Jan is taller than she’.

Abstract:
The author investigates the first name Jan (John), its modifications and usage on the territory of today’s Czech Republic. On the basis of rich anthroponymic sources she has proved that the name Jan has belonged among the most frequently used names in the Czech lands since the 12th century and has kept this status to the present day. Numerous hypocoristic modifications of this name have served the purpose of distinguishing individuals bearing the same official name. Today, they still exist as both surnames (Janáček, Janda) and hypocoristic forms of first names (Jenda, Honzík) used in informal contexts

This chapter is an obituary for Jan Karski. He was a Polish Catholic who, as a courier for the Polish underground, risked his life and bore witness to the Holocaust and who was hailed as a hero of the Jewish people. He was raised in an ardent Catholic and patriotic family, but one free of the antisemitism characteristic of the political culture of the Polish right at that time. A brilliant student, Karski went on to receive degrees in law and diplomatic studies at Jan Kazimierz University in Lviv in 1935. He did military service in 1935 and 1936 in an artillery training school, and then studied in Germany, Switzerland, and Great Britain, mastering languages. He entered Poland’s foreign service in 1938, a step towards his dream of becoming an ambassador. He was mobilized in 1939 and captured by the Red Army when it joined Nazi Germany in invading Poland.

Abstract:
In the past, children were not considered children in the sense they are today, and if they could read, they read books for adults. This changed gradually after the publication of Jean-Jacques Rousseau's influential book on child rearing, Émile, ou De l'éducation, in 1762. As society's ideas about childhood and parenting began to shift, so did our ideas about which media are appropriate for children. This chapter describes how society's ideas about youth and media have been subject to swings of the pendulum since the seventeenth century. In addition, it compares the current generation with previous generations. Why are children and teens more self-aware and intelligent than ever? Why has youth culture become so dominant in society? Why do children display adult behavior at younger and younger ages? And lastly, what is media's role in these developments?

As a mobile offshore unit, a jack-up can float, self-elevate and then impose proofing loads on the seabed to establish a safe working envelope for subsequent drilling or construction activities. Jack-up site assessment has seen significant advances over the 50 or more years that jack-ups have been deployed offshore. The advances have occurred as a result of both the improvements that have been seen in the analytical tools and also as a result of the many significant strides in our understanding of the physics of the jack-up and the ocean environment. Jack-ups, due to their semi-compliant nature, pose particularly difficult challenges to the designer and operator — more so than most offshore structures. This requires cutting edge technologies to assure that practical solutions can be reached without either too much conservatism or too little safety. These advances have often occurred, or been encouraged, as a result of the engagement of the operators hiring the jack-ups and their technical overseers such as Jan Vugts. Jan was instrumental in initiating the Shell study into jack-up site assessment that resulted in a follow-up JIP which developed the SNAME Recommend Practice. Since then ISO 19905-1 has been under development and Jan has provided both encouragement and also very detailed review comments. This paper charts the voyage from the early days of jack-up site assessment through to the development of the ISO and highlights some of the key technical developments.

Abstract:
To meet the need of advanced compliant parallel grippers (CPGs), this paper deals with the conceptual design and modelling of a novel self-adaptive CPG for high-precision manipulation. A self-adaptive CPG is proposed by using a cymbal-type amplifier and two parallelogram modules at first. The self-adaptive grasping function ensures the mobility of one jaw if another jaw is constrained. Then the displacement amplification ratio and the force-displacement equations of the self-adaptive CPG are derived and compared with the FEA results. Finally, the variations, especially the case with a bistable mechanism as the jaw, are discussed. The self-adaptive grasping function of the proposed CPG is unique compared with the existing CPGs driven by only one linear actuator. Other good performance characteristics of the proposed self-adaptive CPG include: large-stroke, no stress-concentration, minimized parasitic rotation of the jaw, actuator isolation, and a simple and compact configuration.

Full text
Abstract:
Between 1986 and 2002, there were 43 fatalities in the United States to operators of recycling industry balers. Of these fatalities, 29 involved horizontal balers that were baling paper and cardboard (Taylor, 2002). Balers often become jammed while the baling process is occurring, and the only way to remove the jam is manually. This requires an employee to place a limb of their body into the jamming area and remove the material that is causing the jam. While lockout and tagout procedures reduce the risk of hazardous energy being released, they can still be easily bypassed, ignored, or forgotten. Recent efforts to reduce machine-related injury and death involve the development of a control system for these machines that automatically detects hazardous operating conditions and responds accordingly. The system is being developed at the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH). This system, JamAlert, automatically terminates the power to the machine when a jam is detected. JamAlert detects a jam by observing both the strain that is experienced by the shear bar of the baler and the hydraulic pressure at which the ram is operating. The strain that is experienced by the baler shear bar when a jam is initiated was calculated in this study through laboratory testing and finite element modeling. Design recommendations are presented on how best to tune the JamAlert’s operating program to most effectively control the jam-clearing hazard.

In order to widen a patient’s upper jaw, or maxilla, orthodontists will make use of a maxillary expansion (ME) appliance. This procedure is typically used in adolescents having a narrow maxillary complex. Widening the jaw may be achieved through a variety of means such as expansion screws or springs [1]; however, they are all utilized to generate additional space allowing for correction of various tooth misalignments. An example of a common appliance is provided in Fig. 1a.

Abstract:
As embedded designs become more widespread and complex they tend to use more modern processors. Such processors will often include features (such as pipelines, caches, and branch predictors) which help to improve performance. While such performance improvements are welcome, they come at the price of predictability. More specifically, the use of advanced processor hardware makes it difficult to predict the worst-case execution time (WCET) of tasks. As part of an effort to address these problems, Puschner and Burns (Proc. 7th IEEE International Workshop on Object-Oriented Real-Time Dependable Systems, Jan. 2002) proposed the “single path programming paradigm”. As its name implies program code written according to this paradigm has only one execution path: this helps to ensure a constant execution time. Yet there are two problems with the techniques described by Puschner and Burns: (i) they are applicable only to hardware which supports “conditional move” or similar instructions; (ii) their balancing approach increases power consumption. In the present paper, we begin to address both of these problems with a set of novel code-balancing techniques. The effectiveness of these new techniques is explored by means of an empirical study.

Abstract:
“Voyage en Siberie” describes a journey through Russia carried out by Jean Chappe d'Auteroche to observe the passage of Venus across the Sun. Besides the description of this phenomenon the book contains the author’s travel notes and study of the Russian political, historical, geographic and military conditions in the middle of the 18th century. “Voyage en Siberie” was accompanied by the cycle of illustrations performed by Jean-Baptiste Le Prince. As these works were among the first examples of the costume images on the Russian subject, they became crucial in the career of the artist who is considered to be the creator of “Russerie” in French art. This paper discusses the nature of the text and illustrations developing according to the logic of ideas of the Enlightenment. The author intends to show that although Chappe d'Auteroche and Le Prince worked together on the book they had different visions of the problem.

Abstract:
Up until 2007, China has been relying on foreign SCADA vendors to provide SCADA systems for the controlling and monitoring of long distance oil and gas pipelines. While foreign SCADA systems satisfy most requirements, there are still issues such as high cost, limited localization, lack of experienced local representatives, and slow to respond to system changes, etc., remain to be solved and improved in the future. In Jan 2006, Sinopec, one of the major oil and gas corporations in China, initiated a joint venture with a local IT company, Beijing East Mainstay Technology Company Ltd. (East MS), to develop a SCADA system for oil and gas pipelines. The first prototype was finished in Aug 2006. It then went through 4 months of rigorous system testing and refinement and finally it was applied to 5 refined products pipelines in China. This paper unfolds the architecture of the system and discusses the system features in detail to give the audience an insight into the first Chinese SCADA system for long distance oil and gas pipelines.

Abstract:
In their paper “Combining Systems Dynamics and Ethics: Towards More Science?” Erik Pruyt and Jan Kwakkel argue that ethics ought to play a larger role in systems dynamics and vice versa (2007). Including ethics, they contend, will add sensitivity to current systems models as well as provide guidance on how to achieve best outcomes; with respect to both efficiency and flourishing (Pruyt & Kwakkel, 2007). At first blush, such a cross pollination promises to add much needed depth of analysis to systems modeling and a higher degree of precision in ethical analyses. Not surprisingly, however, achieving such outcomes is more complex than it initially appears. Indeed, the quest for additional precision in ethical analysis is not a new one to philosophers and ethicists. The problem remains, in many ways, intractable. In Part I of this paper, the authors expand on Pruyt and Kwakkel’s thesis by examining specific insights and tools that can and should be incorporated into systems dynamics modeling. Emphasis will be placed on the mechanics of this inclusion and the resultant implications. Part II, then, focuses on how systems dynamics tools like causal loop modeling and behavior-over-time graphs can be incorporated into ethical analyses in a non-arbitrary manner. Finally, in Part III of the paper, the authors briefly discuss the ramifications of Parts I and II for engineering education; both among students and practicing engineers. The authors argue that both directions of the cross pollination have merit (especially the inclusion of ethical considerations in systems dynamics modeling) and ought to be developed further.

Financial Stability Report - Second Semester of 2020. Banco de la República de Colombia, March 2021. http://dx.doi.org/10.32468/rept-estab-fin.sem2.eng-2020.

Full text
Abstract:
The Colombian financial system has not suffered major structural disruptions during these months of deep economic contraction and has continued to carry out its basic functions as usual, thus facilitating the economy's response to extreme conditions. This is the result of the soundness of financial institutions at the beginning of the crisis, which was reflected in high liquidity and capital adequacy indicators as well as in the timely response of various authorities. Banco de la República lowered its policy interest rates 250 points to 1.75%, the lowest level since the creation of the new independent bank in 1991, and provided ample temporary and permanent liquidity in both pesos and foreign currency. The Office of the Financial Superintendent of Colombia, in turn, adopted prudential measures to facilitate changes in the conditions for loans in effect and temporary rules for rating and loan-loss provisions. Finally, the national government expanded the transfers as well as the guaranteed credit programs for the economy. The supply of real credit (i.e. discounting inflation) in the economy is 4% higher today than it was 12 months ago with especially marked growth in the housing (5.6%) and commercial (4.7%) loan portfolios (2.3% in consumer and -0.1% in microloans), but there have been significant changes over time. During the first few months of the quarantine, firms increased their demands for liquidity sharply while consumers reduced theirs. Since then, the growth of credit to firms has tended to slow down, while consumer and housing credit has grown. The financial system has responded satisfactorily to the changes in the respective demands of each group or sector and loans may grow at high rates in 2021 if GDP grows at rates close to 4.6% as the technical staff at the Bank expects; but the forecasts are highly uncertain. After the strict quarantine implemented by authorities in Colombia, the turmoil seen in March and early April, which was evident in the sudden reddening of macroeconomic variables on the risk heatmap in Graph A,[1] and the drop in crude oil and coal prices (note the high volatility registered in market risk for the region on Graph A) the local financial markets stabilized relatively quickly. Banco de la República’s credible and sustained policy response played a decisive role in this stabilization in terms of liquidity provision through a sharp expansion of repo operations (and changes in amounts, terms, counterparties, and eligible instruments), the purchases of public and private debt, and the reduction in bank reserve requirements. In this respect, there is now abundant aggregate liquidity and significant improvements in the liquidity position of investment funds. In this context, the main vulnerability factor for financial stability in the short term is still the high degree of uncertainty surrounding loan quality. First, the future trajectory of the number of people infected and deceased by the virus and the possible need for additional health measures is uncertain. For that reason, there is also uncertainty about the path for economic recovery in the short and medium term. Second, the degree to which the current shock will be reflected in loan quality once the risk materializes in banks’ financial statements is uncertain. For the time being, the credit risk heatmap (Graph B) indicates that non-performing and risky loans have not shown major deterioration, but past experience indicates that periods of sharp economic slowdown eventually tend to coincide with rises in non-performing loans: the calculations included in this report suggest that the impact of the recession on credit quality could be significant in the short term. This is particularly worrying since the profitability of credit establishments has been declining in recent months, and this could affect their ability to provide credit to the real sector of the economy. In order to adopt a forward-looking approach to this vulnerability, this Report presents several stress tests that evaluate the resilience of the liquidity and capital adequacy of credit institutions and investment funds in the event of a hypothetical scenario that seeks to simulate an extreme version of current macroeconomic conditions. The results suggest that even though there could be strong impacts on the credit institutions’ volume of credit and profitability under such scenarios, aggregate indicators of total and core capital adequacy will probably remain at levels that are above the regulatory limits over the horizon of a year. At the same time, the exercises highlight the high capacity of the system's liquidity to face adverse scenarios. In compliance with its constitutional objectives and in coordination with the financial system's security network, Banco de la República will continue to closely monitor the outlook for financial stability at this juncture and will make the decisions that are necessary to ensure the proper functioning of the economy, facilitate the flow of sufficient credit and liquidity resources, and further the smooth operation of the payment systems.
