Abstract:

Abstract:
The English music theorist and philosophical writer Edmund Gurney was the first ‘fulltime’ psychical researcher in history. While he was primarily concerned with empirical evidence for telepathy, Gurney significantly contributed to the late nineteenth-century literature on hallucinations in the sane, and the psychology of hypnotism and dissociation. He conducted the first large-scale survey of hallucinations in the general public and, with Pierre Janet, was the first to publish experimental data suggesting dissociated streams of consciousness in hypnotism. This paper sketches Gurney's contributions to psychology and dynamic psychiatry in the context of his friendship with Frederic W.H. Myers and William James. It is argued that although Gurney's research into hallucinations and hypnotism had been embraced and assimilated by contemporary psychologists such as William James, Alfred Binet and others, his contributions to psychology have subsequently been marginalised because of the discipline's paradigmatic rejection of controversial research questions his findings were entangled with.

Abstract:
There is a long history of discussions of mediumship as related to dissociation and the unconscious mind during the Nineteenth Century. After an overview of relevant ideas and observations from the mesmeric, hypnosis, and spiritualistic literatures, I focus on the writings of Jules Baillarger, Alfred Binet, Paul Blocq, Théodore Flournoy, Jules Héricourt, William James, Pierre Janet, Ambroise August Liébeault, Frederic W.H. Myers, Julian Ochorowicz, Charles Richet, Hippolyte Taine, Paul Tascher, and Edouard von Hartmann. While some of their ideas reduced mediumship solely to intra-psychic processes, others considered as well veridical phenomena. The speculations of these individuals, involving personation, and different memory states, were part of a general interest in the unconscious mind, and in automatisms, hysteria, and hypnosis during the period in question. Similar ideas continued into the Twentieth Century.

Abstract:
Objectives: Interest in the work of Pierre Janet is presently undergoing a scholarly revival and, in the process, his contribution to dynamic psychiatry is increasingly being recognised. This article compares and contrasts Pierre Janet's early studies on hysteria and the neuroses with those of Freud. Method: The study surveys original works by Janet and Freud and contemporary scholarly exegeses. It particularly focuses on ideation and memory, consciousness and dissociation, psychological trauma, the self, therapeutic influence, and treatment by integration versus abreaction. Results: Grounds are presented for either preferring Janet's notions to Freud's, or for integrating them. Conclusion: It is concluded that a number of Janet's contributions to psychopathology and psychotherapy, particularly in the field of dissociative disorders, deserve further exploration and application.

Abstract:
Abstract: This essay is an initial attempt to posit a method which has slowly taken shape through our individual and collaborative investigations into the history of democracy in the United States and France. Our overall approach builds on a number of diverse methodological influences, but in this particular essay we highlight just two of the most influential precedents for our work: first, the pragmatic-hermeneutical approach most explicitly outlined by James T. Kloppenberg in his “Thinking Historically: A Manifesto of Pragmatic Hermeneutics” and second, Pierre Rosanvallon’s methodological essays on the theme of “Une histoire conceptuelle du politique,” which he launched with his inaugural lecture at the College de France.[1] Part one of this article recounts the original search for a more philosophical conception of American history as illustrated in James Kloppenberg’s pursuit of a more pragmatic hermeneutics. Part two charts Pierre Rosanvallon’s somewhat different path towards a more pragmatic historical orientation from his distinctive place within a French historical tradition with an already well-developed philosophical (as well as symbolic) pedigree. We conclude with some brief reflections on how the rudiments of this pragmatic historical method might be further deployed and developed in the future.[2][1] James T. Kloppenberg, “Thinking Historically: A Manifesto of Pragmatic Hermeneutics,” Modern Intellectual History, 9 (2012): 201-216; Pierre Rosanvallon, “Inaugural Lecture, College de France,” in Samuel Moyn, ed., Democracy Past and Future (New York: Columbia University Press, 2006): 31-58.[2] Among other influences, this method has also been influenced by Foucault’s genealogical method as well as the “pragmatic turn” in French social science and specifically its influence on certain members of the Annales as presented by Bernard Lepetit in Les formes de l’expérience: Une autre histoire sociale (Paris: Albin Michel, 1995). We hope to elaborate these other aspects in future studies.

Abstract:
Objective: To draw attention to the absence of a concept of personal existence in standard psychiatric approaches to mental illness. Method: To sketch a shift in Western consciousness which occurred suddenly before World War I, involving a banishment of such notions as self and the awareness of inner life from the discourse of psychiatry, psychology and philosophy, leaving a fundamental vacancy at the heart of these disciplines. Results and Conclusion: The positivist–behaviourist hegemony of the twentieth century involved an implicit devaluation of that which is essentially human. The influence of this tradition brings with it the risk of an understanding and treatment of mental illness which leaves out issues at the core of humanity. I suggest we need to recover something of the manner of thinking of the great figures in psychological thought who were writing before the rise of behaviourism and who were contributing to the origins of dynamic psychiatry. A study of the phenomena of human consciousness was central to their work. Main figures mentioned include: Hughlings Jackson, the great neurologist who considered a career in philosophy; Pierre Janet, a philosopher turned psychiatrist; and William James, a physiologist who became a psychologist and philosopher.

Abstract:
Abstract Background: Head and Neck (HNSCC) and Ovarian cancer (OC) are two indications for which immunotherapy had limited impact so far. Current treatments achieve high rates of initial success through surgery and adjuvant chemo/radiotherapy, but patients (pts) remain at high risk of relapse in both indications. Immune stimulation using a vaccine is a promising strategy to a clinically meaningful improvement. Herein we report phase I data of TG4050, a vaccine engineered to carry a pt tailored antigen payload, in pts with HNSCC (NCT04183166) or OC (NCT03839524). Methods: Tumor specific variants are identified using next generation sequencing of tumor and normal samples whereby immune relevant mutations are predicted using a machine learning algorithm factoring in parameters known to affect immunogenicity including MHC binding, level of expression, prevalence across clones, and antigen processing. DNA sequences of the mutations of interest, typically 30 per pt, are cloned in a viral vector (Modified Vaccinia Virus Ankara). Following curative intent treatment, HNSCC pts in complete remission were randomized to an immediate vaccination arm to receive weekly doses of TG4050 for 6 weeks followed by a maintenance period of one dose every 3 weeks for up to 20 doses or to a delayed vaccination arm where the same vaccination regimen is initiated at relapse. OC pts received the vaccine upon onset of signs of relapse. PBMC were collected at Baseline and after 6 doses of vaccine. Primary endpoint was vaccine safety and secondary endpoints included feasibility, immunogenicity. Results: 18 pts received TG4050 (5 OC and 13 HNSCC) treatment with no related grade ≥ 3 adverse events. Tumor mutational burden (TMB) was on average 3.00±0.98 and 2.43±0.69 mutations per megabase for HNSCC and OC respectively. Despite this low TMB, all pts had sufficient cancer specific neoantigens to design a vaccine. Ex-vivo ELISPOT was completed for 7 pts at the time of submission. A mean of 44% of selected mutations were associated with a reactive T cell responses either spontaneously or after TG4050 stimulation ranging from 6 to 22 mutations per pt. Vaccination induced a stimulation of T cell response in all tested pts on an average of 10 targeted mutations, induction of de novo responses was seen in all 7 tested pts and amplification of pre-existing response in 6/7 pts. None of the evaluable HNSCC pts receiving TG4050 immediately after first line treatment had relapse after a median follow-up of 7 months while 2 pts had relapse in the delayed vaccination arm. Furthermore, in OC pts treated at early relapse, TG4050 has normalized disease markers (ctDNA and/or CA-125) for 2/4 pts with stable disease for 9 and 11 months. Conclusion: TG4050 treatment is feasible and immunogenic in pts with low to moderate TMB. It is effective in inducing T cell responses and first signs of antitumor activity are encouraging for the continuation of development. Citation Format: Ana Lalanne, Camille Jamet, Christian H. Abstract:
SynopsisIn 1903 Pierre Janet published perhaps the first detailed descriptions of patients with bulimia. Janet's observations, although anecdotal, are consistent with modern studies suggesting an association between bulimia and major affective disorder and between bulimia and anxiety disorders. Janet's writings also support the belief that bulimia is more prevalent today than a century ago.

Abstract:
AbstractThe Laurentide Ice Sheet of the last glacial period terminated in several lobes along its southern margin. The timing of maximum extent may have varied among the terminal lobes owing to internal ice sheet dynamics and spatially variable external controls. Some terminal ice lobes, such as the westernmost James Lobe, remain poorly dated. To determine the timing of maximum ice extent in this key location, we have mapped glacial deposits left by the Pierre Sublobe in South Dakota and applied 10Be surface exposure age dating on boulders on moraine ridges associated with three distinct late Quaternary glacial drifts. The oldest and most extensive “Tazewell” drift produced variable 10Be surface exposure ages spanning 20–7 ka; the large range is likely attributable to moraine degradation and subsequent boulder exhumation. The oldest ages of about 20 ka are probably limiting minimum ages for the Tazewell moraine surfaces. By contrast, exposure ages of the youngest “Mankato” drift of the easternmost Pierre Sublobe tightly cluster at about 16 ka. This age for the Pierre Sublobe is consistent with the nearby Des Moines Lobe, suggesting both acted together.

Abstract:
Leonhard Schwartz’s importance in the history of psychology has probably not been fully appreciated, and this article is dedicated to the life and work of the Basel neurologist. It highlights the triangular relationship he maintained for 20 years with Pierre Janet, of whom he was a disciple, and Henri F. Ellenberger, to whom he passed on his passion for Janet’s oeuvre.
