Abstract:
To pasekoje, 2009 m.
Cities are extraordinary creations of man, where greenery plays an important role. Since 2008 the Law on landscaping (01/14/2008, Nr.D1-31) came into effect. The program of landscaping and monitoring the plantation condition focuses on the collection of data, assessing, managing, predicting conditions and increasing the green areas and spaces in the territory of the municipality. As a result, in 2009 the Environmental Protection Department of the Alytus Municipality opened the contest for the preparation and monitoring of green spaces in Alytus city in 2009-2013. The aim of our research is to assess the quality of soil and green spaces in the city of Alytus, to determine the soil pH, the amount of nitrogen, phosphorus and potassium, as well as to assess the contamination of soil by sodium and chlorine. The defoliation, discolouration, necrosis of leaves and violation of tree trunks in the green spaces were evaluated on a of the five point scale from 1 to 5 in the period from August to September. Chemical analysis shows that the pH of soil is optimal for the deciduous trees and shrubs in parks and squares of Alytus city (pH 6.0-7.0), but it could be more acid as optimal pH is from 4.5 to 5.0. The amount of phosphorus and potassium in plants is not sufficient (<150mg kg), with the exception of Angels Church Square, where the amount of chemical elements exceeds the norm. The soil of urban street greenery is slightly alkaline (pH from 7.1 to 7.8), and in the Pulkas street the... [to full text]

Abstract:
Masjed-e Jame of Isfahan represents over one thousand year old tradition and history of mosque construction in Iran, demonstrating a variety of practical techniques, architectural styles and Iranian architectural decorations altogether in one building complex. The unique example of Iranian Islamic architecture was finally recognised as having international importance and therefore registered in 2012.The imperfections in Isfahan`s Masjed-e Jame nomination file may have delayed the registration process for its inclusion on the UNESCO World Heritage List (WHL) took a long time (4 years). Each nomination file is composed of nine sections. The aim of this thesis is to clarify the weak points of the registered nomination file of Masjed-e Jame as a World Heritage Site (WHS), based on UNESCO guideline and to propose improvements for increasing the quality of Masjed-e Jame conservation management plan by utilizing nomination files of some similar registered sites in the WHL. Additionally, to show how these suggestions improve the quality of nomination files of similar monuments under preparation. The research was conducted by selecting similar sites from the WHL. To select similar sites to the Masjed-e Jame, it was necessary to prepare a series of tables which consists of all the registered sites in UNESCO from around the world. All 981 registered monuments on WHL in 2013 were evaluated in three different phases and eliminated by different criteria at each phase to leave eight suitable case studies. The research continued by assessing the eight selected nomination files and categorizing each part of the file as either excellent, good, average, adequate and poor. This evaluation used the main sections of nomination files based on UNESCO guideline which are: 1. Identification of the properties; 2. Description; 3. Justification for inscription; 4. State of conservation and factors affecting the properties; 5. Protection and management of the property; 6. Monitoring; 7. Documentation; 8. Contact information of responsible authorities; 9. Signature on behalf of the state party. By clarifying the weak and strong points of each nomination file, the following recommendations were proposed to improve the quality of nomination file of Masjed-e Jame and also the application of the findings in to similar monument nomination files under preparation. These included: 1) Full details of the location of The management of the conservation of Masjed-e Jame, Isfahan D the site; 2) Providing list of the site`s owners; 3) The usage of maps beside the text and referring to the policies; 4) Appropriate scientific methods to solve or reduce problems with the building fabric, usage etc.; 5) Preparing lists of responsibilities related to the selected organizations; 6) The relationship to tourism; 7) The connections between universities and related organizations; 8) The concentration on the urgent priorities by separating projects into long and short term; 9) Documentation. Furthermore, a timetable by considering priority was proposed to improve the Masjed-e Jame conservation management plan.

Emmett, Rebecca Jane. "Networks of print, patronage and religion in England and Scotland 1580-1604 : the career of Robert Waldegrave." Thesis, University of Plymouth, 2013. http://hdl.handle.net/10026.1/3352.

Full text
Abstract:
This thesis seeks to examine the nature of the intertwined networks of print, patronage and religion that existed within and across England and Scotland between 1580 and 1604, through the career of the English printer Robert Waldegrave. Multifaceted and complex, Waldegrave’s career spanned two countries, four decades and numerous controversies. To date scholars have engaged in a teleological narrative of his career, culminating in his involvement with the Marprelate press between April 1588/9. This focus on Waldegrave as a religious radical has coloured accounts of his English business and resulted in his Scottish career being disregarded by many. This thesis adds to the growing body of scholarship concerning printers and the print trade, illustrating the varied role Waldegrave played, both in relation to the texts he produced and within a broader trans-national context of print There are three major thematic areas of enquiry; whether Waldegrave’s characterization by contemporary commentators and subsequent scholars as a Puritan printer is accurate; what his career in Scotland between 1590 and 1603 reveals about the Scottish print trade, and finally the role and significance of the various networks of print, patronage and religion within which he operated in regards to his own career as well as in the broader context of early modern religious and commercial printing. Challenging the reductive interpretation of Waldegrave’s life and career, this thesis places the Marprelate episode within the wider framework of his English and Scottish careers, enabling traditional assumptions about his motivation and autonomy to be questioned and reevaluated. It will be shown that the accepted image of Waldegrave as a committed Puritan printer, developed and disseminated by his representation within the Marprelate tracts was actually a misrepresentation of his position and that the reality was far more nuanced. His choices were informed by commercial concerns and the various needs of the networks of print, patronage and religion within which he worked, which often limited his ability to promote the religious beliefs he held. The study of Waldegrave and his English contemporaries within the Scottish print trade expands our knowledge of the relationship between the print trades of England and Scotland and highlights how intertwined they were during this period. Waldegrave’s Scottish career, and the significance of his complicated relationship with his royal patron, James VI will be established and the wider impact and significance of Waldegrave’s appointment as Royal printer demonstrated. As he worked as a minor jobbing printer, a fugitive on a clandestine press and as the Royal Printer in Scotland Waldegrave is one of a small number of stationers whose career was extremely varied. Through the study of Waldegrave’s unique and multifaceted career it is therefore possible to trace and analyse the complex networks within which he, and his fellow stationers operated during the late-sixteenth century.

Abstract:
This paper develops a Bayesian variant of global vector autoregressive (B-GVAR) models to forecast an international set of macroeconomic and financial variables. We propose a set of hierarchical priors and compare the predictive performance of B-GVAR models in terms of point and density forecasts for one-quarter-ahead and four-quarter-ahead forecast horizons. We find that forecasts can be improved by employing a global framework and hierarchical priors which induce country-specific degrees of shrinkage on the coefficients of the GVAR model. Forecasts from various B-GVAR specifications tend to outperform forecasts from a naive univariate model, a global model without shrinkage on the parameters and country-specific vector autoregressions

Abstract:
In this paper we put forward a Bayesian Model Averaging method aimed at performing inference under model uncertainty in the presence of potential spatial autocorrelation. The method uses spatial filtering in order to account for uncertainty in spatial linkages. Our procedure is applied to a dataset of income per capita growth and 50 potential determinants for 255 NUTS-2 European regions. We show that ignoring uncertainty in the type of spatial weight matrix can have an important effect on the estimates of the parameters attached to the model covariates. After integrating out the uncertainty implied by the choice of regressors and spatial links, human capital investments and transitional dynamics related to income convergence appear as the most robust determinants of growth at the regional level in Europe. Our results imply that a quantitatively important part of the income convergence process in Europe is influenced by spatially correlated growth spillovers.

Abstract:
We propose a straightforward algorithm to estimate large Bayesian time-varying parameter vector autoregressions with mixture innovation components for each coefficient in the system. The computational burden becomes manageable by approximating the mixture indicators driving the time-variation in the coefficients with a latent threshold process that depends on the absolute size of the shocks. Two applications illustrate the merits of our approach. First, we forecast the US term structure of interest rates and demonstrate forecast gains relative to benchmark models. Second, we apply our approach to US macroeconomic data and find significant evidence for time-varying effects of a monetary policy tightening.

Abstract:
The object of this study is to explore a figure of mythological origin which has been actualized and reinterpreted in the first half of the XXth century by anthropologists first and then, in their wake, by a few poetic works – the Great Goddess of Antiquity, now popularized as the Goddess. From anthropological construction to literary rewriting, the goddess appears as a composite figure, embodying both the idea of the mother and of death. As a woman, she is opposed to man, as a mother-goddess, to the father-god. A whole network of diversely originated representations and narratives develops around her: the narrative of the hero’s confrontation with the Goddess, the theory of prehistoric matriarchy, revelations both sexual and spiritual, the enigma of poetry. Through her, the question of the problematic relations between female gender and humanity is ultimately raised

Abstract:
This thesis explores problems with legal communication as a social problem in which discourse and the shared beliefs of groups play a crucial role. It concludes that plain language is a problematic construct in the law because there are costs of systematically misrepresenting an intention to communicate effectively as the solution to a complex set of social and legal issues. The study generates new practical theory that has potential to transform practice by raising awareness of the extent to which shared beliefs about legal language, plain language and effective legal communication are reconstructed in everyday discourse.

With the growth of worldwide computer networks and increased use of distributed applications, there is a significant increase in data traffic in the link, thus demonstrating the need for improvement # or replacement of existing techniques for data transmission # of the traditional client-server one. The mobile agent technology has been the subject of several researches in area, because it only allows a code to move between network nodes and return with the results, reducing the network#s load. For a mobile agent to accomplish its mission, it is necessary for it to meet a deadline. However, in a distributed system there is the possibility of competition for the same resource. Treating such competition adequately is very important, especially in a real-time environment. In this view, an execution model in which mobile agents compete for the same resource in the same host is proposed # RT-JADE: a middleware extension that allows concurrent mobile agents to achieve their missions, using real-time scheduling methods on the JADE platform. We demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed model through simulation and comparison of different scheduling policies under different workloads (number of competing agents).

Abstract:
The aim of this dissertation is to investigate the social and historical sedimentation of Charlotte Brontës 1847 debut novel, Jane Eyre, by exploring its point of view. Drawing from the novels literary criticism, especially from the reviews that followed its publication and from the Feminist and Marxist criticism, two different ways of understanding Jane Eyre are distinguished. The close reading of excerpts from Charlotte Brontës work aims at highlighting that these two readings are possible due to the narrators ambiguous position in the Victorian social structure. By expanding Terry Eagletons concept of the in between, it is discussed that, since Jane is from the very beginning of the novel in a position between the upper and lower classes and she longs for inclusion, she accounts on and denounces the violence that permeated the Victorian society, just as, at the same time, she incorporates the dominant discourse even when it speaks against herself. Thus, it is understood that the novel portrays the contradictory situation of the petty bourgeoisie and the impact of being in such a position on the individuals consciousness, as it is seen in Jane Eyres narrators voice.

'Women and independence in the nineteenth century novel : a study of Austen, Trollope and James', begins with the concept of independence and works through the three most common usages of the word. The first, financial independence (not needing to earn one's livelihood) appears to be a necessary prerequisite for the second and third forms of independence, although it is by no means an unequivocal good in any of the novels. The second, intellectual independence (not depending on others for one's opinion or conduct; unwilling to be under obligation to others), is a matter of asserting independence while employing terms which society recognizes. The third, of being independent, is exemplified by an inward struggle for a knowledge of self. In order to trace the development of the idea of self during the nineteenth century, I have chosen a group of novels which seem to be representative of the beginning, the middle, and the end of the period. Particular attention is given to the characterizations of Emma Woodhouse, Glencora Palliser, Isabel Archer, Milly Theale and Maggie Verver. Whereas in Jane Austen's novels the self has a definite shape which the heroine must discover, and in Anthony Trollope's novels the self (reflecting the idea of socially-determined man) must learn to accommodate social and political changes, in Henry James's novels the self determined by external manifestations (hollow man) is posed against the exercise of the free spirit or soul. Jane Austen's novels look backward, as she reacts against late eighteenth century romanticism, and forward, with the development of the heroine who exemplifies intellectual independence. Anthony Trollope's women characters are creatures of social and political adaptation; although they do not derive their reason for being from men, they must accommodate themselves to men's wishes. And Henry James looks backward, wistfully, at Austen's solid, comforting, innocent self and forward, despairingly, to the dark, unknowable self of the twentieth century.

This article suggests a strong correlation between students believing that science is relevant and student achievement in science. Seventy two freshman students in a high school of 1800 students were surveyed and assessed on their experiences in science. The instructional method used through the course of the study was science taught through a relevant/authentic manner. The results of this study imply that if educators can tie their curriculum to science concepts, students will achieve higher in science.

Abstract:
This research investigated the potential of folk opera as a tool for HIV and AIDS education in Papua New Guinea. It began with an investigation on the indigenous performativities and theatricalities of Papua New Guineans, conducting an audit of eight selected performance traditions in Papua New Guinea. These traditions were analysed, and five cultural forms and twenty performance elements were drawn out for further exploration. These elements were fused and combined with theatre techniques from western theatre traditions, through a script development process involving Australians, Papua New Guineans and international collaborators. The resulting folk opera, entitled Kumul, demonstrates what Murphy (2010) has termed story force, picture force, and feeling force, in the service of a story designed to educate Papua New Guinean audiences about HIV and the need to adopt safer sexual practices. Kumul is the story of a young man faced with decisions on whether or not to engage in risky sexual behaviours. Kumul's narrative is carefully framed within selected Papua New Guinean beliefs drawn from the audit to deliver HIV and AIDS messages using symbolic and metaphoric communication techniques without offending people. The folk opera Kumul was trialled in two communities in Papua New Guinea: a village community and an urban settlement area. Kumul is recognisable to Papua New Guinean audiences because it reflects their lifestyle and a worldview, which connects them to their beliefs and spirituality, and the larger cosmological order. Feedback from audience members indicated that the performance facilitated HIV and AIDS communication, increased people's awareness of HIV and AIDS, and encouraged behaviour change. Tellingly, in one performance venue, forty people queued for Voluntary Testing and Counseling immediately after the performance. Twenty of these people were tested on that night and the other twenty were tested the following day. Many of the volunteers were young men – a demographic historically difficult to engage in HIV testing. This encouraging result indicates that the Kumul folk opera form of applied theatre could be useful for facilitating communication and education regarding sexual health and safer sexual behaviours in Papua New Guinea. Feedback from participants, audience members and other research stakeholders suggests that the form might also be adapted to address other social and development issues, particularly in the areas of health and social justice.

Glosson, Sarah G. "Performing Jane: a cultural history of Jane Austen's fans in America." W&M ScholarWorks, 2015. https://scholarworks.wm.edu/etd/1539720290.

Abstract:
Jane Austen's American fans have a vibrant history. This dissertation traces how fans have sustained devotion to Austen, her works, and her world since the early nineteenth century through a set of practices still current among fans today: collecting objects and knowledge; writing imitative works; and carrying out literary pilgrimage.;I argue that these three modes of engagement are performative. Through practices such as creating and collecting material objects, and writing and reading fan fiction, fans engage in acts of what Joseph Roach has called surrogation. This is a performative means through which fans seek a substitute for a past affective experience that can never be repeated in the same way, such as reading a beloved novel for the first time. These acts take place within the everyday lives of fans who seek pleasure from Austen's world. Through pilgrimage fans enter into a liminal space, apart from the quotidian, where they may perform subjectivity as fans. These performances are enacted during pilgrimage to Austen-related sites, as well as to special events like those sponsored by the Jane Austen Society of North America.;Throughout this dissertation I offer evidence of fan practices overlooked or underrepresented by past studies. This evidence reveals nearly two hundred years of continuity within the American Austen fandom. These fans enjoy a nostalgic, personal connection to Austen, her characters, and her era. their practices offer means of entering Austen's world, seeking pleasure, fulfillment, and community; they also offer means of re-engaging with the original texts, always in search of something new within the familiar.;This case study of Jane Austen fandom contributes to the larger understanding of fans and fan practices. The Austen fandom boasts unique qualities and has a history predating the term "fan," yet it resembles recent popular culture media fandoms. Through a history of three modes of fan practices, I describe and theorize how performativity and surrogation work within fandom, proposing new, more specific ways of understanding the subjectivity, history, and practices of fans---representing prevalent and creative ways American culture consumes literature and narrative media.

Full text
Abstract:
This thesis examines the structures guiding and informing reading intrinsic to James's "late" style. It seeks to explore James's analogy between reading as an ethical activity and his own and his characters' acts of storytelling. It looks first at the necessities of reading as they are presented through the character of Isabel Archer in The Portrait of a Lady, to find that reading for James is itself a form of storytelling. James's concept of "revision," which replaces the concept of "re-writing," unites the activities of reading and storytelling because both activities, to be free, must be guided by the contingencies of experience. James's emphasis on the determinations of experience, which yields changing apprehensions of the same material, at once makes reading a test of the reader's resources in dealing with unexpected and complex situations, and storytelling an act of improvisation if it is to be faithful to the demands of its subject. The second half of the thesis examines Maggie Verver's command of storytelling in The Golden Bowl. It finds that ethical storytellers must have the same faith in their subject matter as ethical readers must have in the texts they engage. Finally, the thesis unites the study of reading with storytelling by examining the ways in which stories are exemplary performances whose the most significant subject is the audience. It is the forms of judgement that a work of art elicits which are essential to establishing alternative conceptions of the good and new modes of valuation in a community.

Wells, Dominic Peter. "James MacMillan : retrospective modernist." Thesis, Durham University, 2012. http://etheses.dur.ac.uk/5932/.

Full text
Abstract:
Although he describes himself as a ‘modernist’, tradition has been an integral aspect of the music of James MacMillan from the beginning of his compositional career. Three traditions in particular permeate his works: the cultural tradition of his native Scotland; the religious tradition of the Catholic Church; and the tradition of music from past models to the present day. These three traditions and their relationship to the present are explored in depth in this thesis, which argues that MacMillan should be termed a ‘retrospective modernist’, given the emphasis he places on the relationship between past traditions and the present. Part I examines MacMillan’s political and cultural retrospective modernism, initially in the general context of autonomous and political music, and then more specifically in relation to Liberation Theology, while the remainder explores MacMillan’s complex relationship with Scotland, past and present. Part II discusses religious retrospective modernism, comparing MacMillan with Wagner and Bach. The theological implications of Wagner’s Tristan und Isolde are discussed in conjunction with The Sacrifice and St John Passion, and the following chapter addresses three liturgical issues concerning both MacMillan and Bach: musical settings of the Christian Passion narrative; the composition of music for congregational participation; and the practice of recycling music in mass settings. Part III continues with this topic of musical recycling and quotation in MacMillan’s works, first in comparison with Mahler, and then extending to consider the technique of polystylism in the music of Ives, Berio, Schnittke and Maxwell Davies, all of whom have been significant influences on MacMillan. Finally, an in-depth examination of the tension between the concepts of tradition and modernism concludes the study. While some modernists see this tension as irreconcilable, MacMillan considers it to be a positive, creative tension. Issues relating to high modernism, antimodernism, postmodernism, pluralist modernism and finally retrospective modernism are discussed here, demonstrating why the latter is the most appropriate term to describe the music MacMillan composed in the period 1982-2010.

Abstract:
(Uncorrected OCR) Abstract of thesis entitled 'William James' Psychological Philosophy' submitted by Kwok Hang Wah Yvonne for the degree of Master of Philosophy at the University of Hong Kong in November 2002 The aim of this thesis is to suggest a way to better understand William James' philosophy by recognising its relation with his evolutionary psychology. In order to clarify James' version of 'evolutionary psychology', I will present it in contrast to Herbert Spencer's biological psychology. In Chapter Two, I will discuss how Spencer establishes his development hypothesis and how he understands the mind as a biological product being modified by environmental changes. In Chapter Three, I will interpret James' argument against Spencer's ideas that the mind operates passively, and that Spencer has overlooked the subjective factors in mental development. Through the discussion, we can understand the main difference between James' and Spencer's evolutionary psychologies. The fourth chapter will focus on James' psychology of the active mind. I will offer a more detailed explanatory account of James' views of three important mental functions, namely 'discrimination', 'association' and 'conception', as well as how they operate to construct experiences. In the last chapter, I will interpret one of the topics in James' philosophical discussions, so as to illustrate his psychological view in his philosophy. The discussion will show James' views of the different i roles of perception and conception in life, and his evolutionary concern of the functional use of concepts for experience. I will then explain how these views are related to James' argument against rationalism and his position in his radical empiricism. Through these discussions, I hope to shed light on the connection between James' evolutionary psychology and his philosophical ideas, which ultimately offers a better understanding to James' philosophy. ii

James, Nicola. "Jane Gardam : religious writer." Thesis, University of Glasgow, 2016. http://theses.gla.ac.uk/7628/.

Full text
Abstract:
This thesis examines the work of the award-winning contemporary English short story and novel writer Jane Gardam. It proposes that much of her achievement and craft stems from her engagement with religion. It draws on Gardam’s published works from 1971 to 2014 including children’s books and adult novels. While Gardam has been reviewed widely, there is little serious critical appreciation of her fiction and there are misreadings of the influence of religion in her work. I therefore analyse the religious dimensions of her stories: the language, stylistics and hermeneutic of Gardam’s three religious influences, namely the Anglo-Catholic, Benedictine and Quaker movements and how she sites them within her work. The thesis proposes lectio divina, arguably an ancient form of contemporary reader-response criticism, as a framework to describe the Word’s religious agency when embedded or alluded to in fiction. It also considers and applies critical discussion on the medieval concept of the aevum, a literary religious space. Finally, I suggest that religious writing such as Gardam’s has a place in the as yet unexplored ‘poetic’ strand of Receptive Ecumenism, a new movement that seeks to address reception of the Word between members of different faith communities. Having examined many aspects of Gardam’s writing, its history and potential, I conclude that her achievement owes much to her engagement with particular and divergent forms of religious life and practice.

Abstract:

Rix, A. C. "Transport in Henry James." Thesis, University College London (University of London), 2014. http://discovery.ucl.ac.uk/1428636/.

Full text
Abstract:
This dissertation explores the relationship between transport and representation in James’s later fiction. Each chapter adopts a particular route: by carriage, boat, train, bicycle and automobile, examining its function and resonance within the Jamesian narrative. Texts discussed include What Maisie Knew (1897), The Sacred Fount (1901), The Ambassadors (1903), and The Golden Bowl (1904), as well as lesser-known tales such as ‘The Patagonia’ (1888), ‘The Papers’ (1903), and ‘The Velvet Glove’ (1903). The thesis assumes a historical basis, addressing the considerable developments in transportation that occurred between the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries and their appreciable impact upon manners and readerships. James’s texts are read alongside the bicycle’s association with media and print culture, the literature known as ‘railway reading’, and the cabby’s superior knowledge of geographical and sexual ‘relations’, as enlisted by the detective story and divorce-court narrative. At the same time, the project seeks to draw attention to the consonance between transport and the Jamesian, countering longstanding treatments of the author’s characters, person and aesthetic as implicitly static. As I argue, transport is not only materially crucial to James’s fictions, but informs aspects of style or subject deemed characteristically Jamesian: a preoccupation with belatedness (for the train traveller), an aversion to exposure or publicity (for the cyclist), and the cab journey’s association with a local and costly knowledge. Above all, I will argue, transport articulates James’s complex preoccupation with relationality, an investment which ranges from the intense subjectivity of his fictional worlds to their series of transatlantic encounters.

Binnie, Georgina Elaine. "James Joyce and photography." Thesis, University of Leeds, 2016. http://etheses.whiterose.ac.uk/15993/.

Full text
Abstract:
This thesis examines the relationship between photography and paralysis in the work of James Joyce. In taking Joyce’s intention to ‘betray the soul of that hemiplegia or paralysis which many consider a city’ as key to his engagement with photography, I argue that the photographic images in Joyce’s work occupy a shifting, intermediary position between the stasis of portraiture and the kinesis of film (LI 55). Garry Leonard, Louise E. J. Hornby and Eloise Knowlton have begun to address the interdisciplinary relationship between photography and literature in the work of James Joyce, but their writing considers individual texts, rather than Joyce’s work as a whole. Studies of the history of Irish photographic culture have been similarly absent, with Justin Carville and Kevin and Emer Rockett’s monographs on Ireland and photography appearing only in the last decade. This project builds on this recent scholarship and, by reading Joyce’s allusions to photography through a historical and theoretical lens, provides a new and in-depth approach to Joycean study.

Rao, Herman Chung-Hwa. "The Jade File System." Diss., The University of Arizona, 1991. http://hdl.handle.net/10150/185569.

Full text
Abstract:
File systems have long been the most important and most widely used form of shared permanent storage. File systems in traditional time-sharing systems such as Unix support a coherent sharing model for multiple users. Distributed file systems implement this sharing model in local area networks. However, most distributed file systems fail to scale from local area networks to an internet. This thesis recognizes four characteristics of scalability: size, wide area, autonomy, and heterogeneity. Owing to size and wide area, techniques such as broadcasting, central control, and central resources, which are widely adopted by local area network file systems, are not adequate for an internet file system. An internet file system must also support the notion of autonomy because an internet is made up by a collection of independent organizations. Finally, heterogeneity is the nature of an internet file system, not only because of its size, but also because of the autonomy of the organizations in an internet. This thesis introduces the Jade File System, which provides a uniform way to name and access files in the internet environment. Jade is a logical system that integrates a heterogeneous collection of existing file systems, where heterogeneous means that the underlying file systems support different file access protocols. Because of autonomy, Jade is designed under the restriction that the underlying file systems may not be modified. In order to avoid the complexity of maintaining an internet-wide, global name space, Jade permits each user to define a private name space. In Jade's design, we pay careful attention to avoiding unnecessary network messages between clients and file servers in order to achieve acceptable performance. Jade's name space supports two novel features: It allows multiple file systems to be mounted under one directory, and it permits one logical name space to mount other logical name spaces. A prototype of Jade has been implemented to examine and validate its design. The prototype consists of interfaces to the Unix File System, the Sun Network File System, and the File Transfer Protocol.

Abstract:
Graduated driver licensing has been shown to improve the safety of young drivers but relatively little is known about how well it works for drivers born in countries where the licensing system is less sophisticated. This research used Bronfenbrenner's ecological model to examine the driver licensing experience of Korean Australian young drivers using driver and parent focus groups and an online survey of drivers. Accumulating the required supervised driving was more difficult for international students than those living with parents and differences in road rules (particularly relating to seat belt use) between the countries exerted an important influence on behaviour.
