Abstract:
Velma Pollard and Erna Brodber, two sister-writers born and raised in Jamaica, recreate imagined and lived homelands in their literature by commemorating the history, culture, and religion of the Caribbean. Velma Pollard was born in St. Catherine, Jamaica; by the time Velma Pollard was three, her parents had moved to Woodside, St. Mary, in northeast Jamaica, where her sister, Erna Brodber was born. They write about their homeland in a series of memories and stories of that lived and imagined experience in their many works: fictional, nonfictional, and poetic. They center on their home village, but occasionally move the settings of their writings to other regions of Jamaica and various Caribbean islands, as well as to other parts of the African diaspora in the United States, Canada, and England. The role of women in the patriarchal society of Jamaica and much of the Caribbean is also a subject of the sisters’ writing. Growing up in what Erna Brodber calls the kumbla, the protective but restrictive environment of many women in the Anglo-Caribbean, is also an important theme in their works. In her fiction, Velma Pollard discusses the gender gaps in employment and the demands of marriage and the special contributions of women to family and community. This study examines Erna Brodber’s work on a par with her sister Velma Pollard’s writing and is the first to do so, drawing upon original interviews.

O’Reilly, Richard, and John Gray. Coercion in community mental health treatment in the Americas. Oxford University Press, 2016. http://dx.doi.org/10.1093/med/9780198788065.003.0015.

Full text
Abstract:
This chapter explores the use of coercion, both legislated and informal, in community mental health services in North America, South America, and the Caribbean. Greater detail is provided for the United States and Canada as there has been more research on formal coercion in these jurisdictions, particularly on the use of outpatient commitment (OPC) and community treatment orders (CTOs). Mexico, Brazil, and Argentina are used as examples of the situation in Latin America and Jamaica as an example from the Caribbean. The chapter discusses whether formal coercive approaches are more respecting of rights than the use of informal coercion. It also compares the types of legislative regimes used in North America.

Abstract:
This chapter offers a definitive example of ecological thinking in contemporary queer fictions. It reads American author Leslie Feinberg's Stone Butch Blues (1992) alongside two narratives set in the Caribbean: Jamaican American Michelle Cliff's No Telephone to Heaven (1987) and Trinidadian Canadian Shani Mootoo's Cereus Blooms at Night (1998). These novels depict what an “organic transgenderism:” a spontaneous, noncommodified, and self-directed process likened to the life-cycle changes of plants and animals. The chapter claims that they thereby challenge the common view of gender transitioning as an “unnatural” medical intervention. Moreover, through their depictions of organic transgenderism, these novels stage, and thus help facilitate, a shift in the 1990s from the older sexological model of “transsexuality” to the current community-derived umbrella term of “transgenderism.” Finally, this chapter demonstrates how a queer ecocritical lens can help us trace the transnational circulation of queer ecological thinking.
