Abstract:
Gustav Jahoda’s research on children’s development of ideas and concepts constitutes a fundamental contribution to social psychology as a developmental and cultural discipline. Jahoda conceived humans in their interdependent relations with socio-cultural and historical environments in which they live, attain knowledge and act. Jahoda’s research on the diversities of thought and agency in children was the subject of meticulous conceptual and methodological rigour. His scholarly work crossed several social and human sciences. This tribute focuses on Jahoda’s early studies of children’s ‘social thinking’ about nationality and economic systems that he carried out in Glasgow. Later in his life Jahoda pursued his ideas on children’s thinking in a close dialogue with other scholars among whom Jean Piaget, Lucien Lévy-Bruhl and Serge Moscovici assumed particular relevance.

Abstract:
This article examines Gustav Jahoda’s late work, focussing on his historical writings which have tended to be somewhat overlooked. In many respects this later work, which needs to be understood as a whole, parallels his earlier work into culture. In his later writings, Jahoda wrote about the history of social psychology but his history served a critical purpose: he was arguing that social psychology was essentially historical. If behaviour was primarily determined by culture then culture was itself historical and, in this regard, social psychological relations were, thus, historical. Because social psychologists need to think historically, as well as culturally, Jahoda considered that it was important that they should not be constrained by artificial disciplinary boundaries. Jahoda’s advocacy of non-disciplinary thinking was not confined to social psychologists. Just as social psychologists should think historically, so sometimes historians need to think social psychologically. As such, C.L.R. James’s famous cricketing motto can be adapted to fit Jahoda’s historical approach to social psychology.

Abstract:
There was a brief overlap between Gustav Jahoda’s path towards the end of his academic (pre-emeritus) career and my own as a student at the Saarland University – a prominent place in the development of cultural psychology. This article highlights some of Jahoda’s fruitful collaborations with Saarbruecken colleagues on the history of (cross-) cultural psychology as well as definitions of perspectives within the field. Gustav Jahoda has also inspired me to pursue the field of cross-cultural psychology and a personal account of this journey will be provided leading to some general observations about Gustav Jahoda’s legacy from a mature student’s perspective.

Abstract:
Summary: This paper tests the factor structure and construct validity of the Access to Categories of Experience scale (ACE; Evans, 1986 ), which has been widely used to measure the five latent benefits of employment proposed by Jahoda (1981) . The ACE and the General Health Questionnaire (GHQ; Goldberg, 1972 ) were administered to 425 unemployed individuals. This original sample was randomly split into two subsamples. Exploratory factor analyses conducted on the first subsample demonstrated four rather than the five separate factors for the ACE scale, which has been asserted by its development and its previous use. The scale was dominated by one major factor of Activity. Confirmatory factor analysis conducted on the second subsample demonstrated a better fit for the four factors rather than the five. Construct validity was established for the ACE scale. When the identified ACE factors were correlated with the GHQ, higher levels of access to the latent benefits was associated with lower levels of psychological distress, although this result was not identified for all factors. The implications of this finding for the latent deprivation model ( Jahoda, 1981 ) are discussed, and recommendations are made in relation to the use of the ACE scale in this area of research.

Abstract.A WAY TOWARDS SUBJECTIVE WELFAREThroughout 34 years of work in the psychology practice, coming from a psychoanalytic formation and comprehending the necessity to implement mechanisms of therapeutic intervention to respond to an increasingly complex demand for psychological and psychosocial profiles, There is a step in the therapeutic practice, gradually to an integration of the model of attention of positive psychology. In order to consolidate the training of undergraduate students in psychology, the psychological attention service is offered in the private practice, conceived as fundamental for its academic and professional development. In that context the request for the atention of Anita, 23 years old, undergraduate student in psychology is received. With imbalance important in different planes of his life. A qualitative research is presented, designed, case study, descriptive, with evolution of 7 months of positive therapeutic intervention. The results of this psychological therapy are presented in reference to the 6 criteria that support the characterization of a positive health state proposed by Maria Jahoda in 1958. The work has been structured based on the patient’s testimony and the progress observed in the consultation. A series of advances are evident in all levels of the patient’s positive mental health, self-esteem, decisionmaking, motivation, sense of life and belonging, interpersonal relationships, resistance to stress, independence, self-regulation, etc. Categorized in the criteria established by Maria Jahoda to identify positive mental health. Keywords: Self-discovery, Resilience, Empowerment, Spiritual Dimension.

Abstract:
Over the course of his long career, Gustav Jahoda was both a supporter and a trenchant critic of my efforts to elaborate a theory of culture and cognition. Toward the end of his life, he argued that cross-cultural psychologists' attempts (including my own) to provide a viable common definition had proven themselves futile. He urged that the quest for a “true definition” was misguided and should be replaced by more local efforts that explain the specific manner in which the term is being used for the specific research problem at hand. This essay offers an example of a decades-long research project that adopted his advice and applied it to the design of activities for the promotion of children’s learning and development.

Abstract:
The research presented in this article follows up on several aspects of Gustav Jahoda’s long and fruitful career: (1) his early fieldwork on cognitive development in Africa, particularly in the area of spatial skills; (2) his interest in cross-cultural psychology as a research method; and (3) his insistence on bringing anthropology and psychology together. The topic of our research is the development of a so-called “geocentric” frame of spatial reference. This is a cognitive style, in which individuals describe and represent small-scale table-top space in terms of large-scale geographic dimensions. We explore the development with age of geocentric language and cognition, and the relationships between the two. We also explore the many environmental and socio-cultural variables that favor the use of this frame. We demonstrate how we untangled several of these variables by using a succession of within-society group comparisons, in several societies where a geocentric frame is in common usage (Bali, Indonesia, India, and Nepal). Our research program unfolds like a detective story, where one finding that is difficult to interpret because of several confounded variables leads to another quasi-experimental group comparison that suggests another hypothesis, which is then tested in a further session of field-work. In each case, we emphasize how important it was to have extensive linguistic and ethnographic knowledge before implementing psychological tests. The research design is not cross-cultural as such (we hardly ever perform comparisons between societies), but culturally sensitive within a series of societies; in other words, as Dasen and Jahoda (1986 , p. 413) defined it, “cross-cultural developmental psychology is not just comparative: essentially it is an outlook that takes culture seriously.”

Based on his broad survey on a selection of the literature dealing with indigenous psychology, Jahoda raised a series of questions about various ways indigenous psychologists (IPists) around the world have answered important issues related to the development of indigenous psychology and found a striking lack of consensus in their proposals. He concluded that: “it is questionable whether any indigenous psychologies actually exist”, “the fact help to explain the subsequent decline of the movement” (p. 169). Nevertheless, because his selection of literature was incomprehensive and biased, his comments on definitions of indigenous psychology, the goals of indigenous psychology, ways for building indigenous psychology, as well as the objective of a universal/global psychology are too hash to drew such a conclusion. Conceiving his viewpoints on those issues in the context of my approach for developing indigenous psychology, we may get an opposite conclusion that indigenous psychology will soon rehabilitate from its apparent disorder if and only if we can find appropriate ways to solve its difficult problems from the perspective of philosophy of science.

Abstract:
Abstract In a 1954 essay Paul Lazarsfeld and Robert K. Merton coined the term homophily to describe similarity-based friendship. They based their findings on friendship patterns among neighbors in a biracial housing project in the United States, using a combined quantitative and qualitative, empirical and speculative analysis of social processes. Since then homophily has become a guiding principle for network science: it is simply presumed that similarity breeds connection. But the unpublished study by Merton, Patricia S. West, and Marie Jahoda, which grounds Lazarsfeld and Merton’s analysis, and the Merton and Bureau of Applied Social Research’s archive reveal a more complex picture. This article engages with the data traces in the archive to reimagine what enabled the residents of the studied housing project to live in difference, as neighbors. The reanimation of this archive reveals the often counterintuitive characteristic of our imagined networks: they are about removal, not addition. It also opens up new imagined possibilities for a digital future beyond the hatred of the different and online echo chambers.

Abstract:

Abstract:
Gustav Jahoda contended that mainstream psychology’s contribution to our understanding of human experience has been impoverished by a neglect of culture. Over a long series of publications, he argued that the disciplines of psychology, anthropology and history have much to learn from one another, since socio-cultural and politico-economic contexts have influenced the formulation of theories and the dissemination of ideas about human nature. In light of his analyses, I argue in this article that systematic inquiries aspiring to generate a situated understanding of human development in Africa should acknowledge and seek to synthesize the complementary strengths of different academic disciplines. And I recommend that African researchers resist the pressure of an enduring Western cultural hegemony embedded in the methodological dictates of many international scholarly, professional and administrative organizations. Such pressure often threatens to do epistemological violence to indigenous modes of thought preferred by local families and communities in whose care African children are growing up. I end by briefly describing some African studies that illustrate ways in which researchers can address the challenge of resisting oppressive hegemony without losing the opportunity to learn from the wisdom accumulated by human development researchers in other socio-cultural and historical contexts.

Abstract:

Abstract:
The controversy about the position of the matter accumulation that causes our peculiar motion with respect to the cosmic background radiation (CBR) has very recently acquired great interest. So, the very local attractor suggested by Lynden-Bell et al. (1988) and Dressler (1988) begins to be questioned. The histogram done by Melnick and Moles (1987) shows that the dominant structure may be at ~140 h−1 Mpc. Similar results have been obtained by Scaramella et al. (1989). On the other hand, the analysis of the very local candidate in the X-ray band shows that this does not have rich clusters of galaxies (Jahoda and Mushotzky 1989). Moreover, Lahav et al. (1989) have studied a sample of 53 clusters emitting X-rays (E ≈ 2–20 keV, LX ≈ 5 × 1042–7 × 1044h−2 erg s−1); they have observed a great concentration of clusters in the direction of the attractor suggested by Lynden-Bell et al., but at a distance of ~100 h−1–150 h−1 Mpc. The detections of nonlocal structures (further than 300 h−1 Mpc) are very few. However, the study done by Shaver (1987) using catalogs of quasars showed that a superstructure with a radius of ~200 h−1 Mpc and with a density in excess of δ ≈ 1 may exist at a distance of ~800 h−1 Mpc.

Abstract:
Time Novak u hrvatsku književnost uvodi motiv ljubavne veze između hrvatskih studenata u Pragu i domaćih djevojaka. Novak u ovom romanu donosi i opise Praga, posebno dijelova uz rijeku Vltavu. U romanu Dva svijeta glavni lik je Amadej Zlatanić, glazbeni genij iz maloga hrvatskog grada čiji talent otkriva mjesni glazbenik Čeh Jan Jahoda. Njegovom zaslugom Amadej odlazi na Konzervatorij u Prag. Novak time vjerojatno prvi u hrvatskoj književnosti piše o češkim glazbenicima doseljenima u Hrvatsku, a spominje i događaje u Češkoj 1848. Dokumentarno najvredniji dio romana je opis praizvedbe oratorija Stabat mater Antonína Dvořáka kojom je ravnao sam autor. Oba romana prevedena su na češki – Pavao Šegota 1925. pod naslovom Svět volá - moře čeká (Svijet zove – more čeka), a Dva svijeta 2015.
