Abstract:
Erica Simon26/2 1910 - 11/2 1993William Michelsen writes a personal obituary about the French Grundtvig scholar Erica Simon. He first met Erica Simon in the middle of the fifties, when she was studying the Swedish folk high schools and wanted to meet all the Grundtvig scholars and people who put Grundtvig’s ideas into practice. Erica Simon was a university professor in Scandinavian languages and literature, but she also founded her own folk high scholl west of Lyons. Erica Simon’s interest in Grundtvig and her commitment to the Grundtvig’s ideal of .the school for life. was aroused in the mid-fifties, when she studied at Uppsala and met the Swedish folk high scholl Hvilan in Sk.ne. Erica Simon worked together especially with the Nordic folk high school in Kung.lv, and she wanted to spread the knowledge of Grundtvig’s ideas, not only in France, but all over the world. Like Grundtvig, Erica Simon wanted to find the roots of folk culture behind the influence from the Roman Empire, an influence which underlies the centralized school system dating back to Napoleonic France. Erica Simon’s main subject in her Grundtvig research was his ideas of the connection between folk enlightenment and science or scholarship. Science and folk culture are different matters but have to interact in order to establish a scholarship built on folk culture. In accordance with Grundtvig, Erica Simon stresses medieval Anglo-Saxon and Icelandic literature as the Nordic element in universal history, establishing a vernacular culture in opposition to the Latin school and scholarship. Erica Simon was a passionate scholar and interpreter of Grundtvigian ideas. She often visited Denmark and was on the Committe of Grundtvig-Selskabet, where she gave lectures, and she published papers in the Grundtvig-Studier in 1969 and 1973.Erica Simon was born i Königsberg on February 26th, 1910. She spent her youth in Hannover and afterwards studied language and literature in Geneva and in Paris. She married in 1936 and became a widow in 1942, but remarried, bearing the name Vollboudt. Jacques Kleiner, her son from her first marriage, today lives in Switserland. From 1939-54 she was a secondary school teacher in France, but in 1954 she began studying the Nordic folk high school, doing research in Uppsala in 1955-56. In 1962 she became a doctor at the Sorbonne University in Paris (Doctorat d.tat in 1962), with a dissertation about the Swedish folk high schools in the late 18th century.

Abstract:
AbstractThis essay treats the inspiration and nature of Yves Simon's philosophical life. His embrace of that life was importantly shaped by his engagement with the republican tradition in France, his passionate opposition to the fascist threat to France, and his later attachment to the aspirations of American democracy. However, his early philosophical interests took direction and inspiration from his encounter with Jacques Maritain who drew him to Thomism. His devotion to the truth was fierce, and he confronted honestly the threats to this defining quality of philosophical life from the pressures of social conformity and from the discouragement of seeing the inadequacies and disagreements in the history of philosophy. He came, as especially evident in his most influential book, Philosophy of Democratic Government, to esteem highly the virtue of prudence, seeking to protect it from both philosophy and social science.

Although our study does not reject a narrative perspective on the event, it claims that a literary approach to the event should not be limited to that angle. The concept of event is therefore considered in the extended field of human sciences (historiography, analytical philosophy, phenomenology, etc. ) in order to gather tools to better capture its specificities in literary texts. The questions regarding the writing of events –historical or natural– are asked in both poetic and narrative texts : what is considered to be an event for a novelist (Simon, Rouaud, Savitzkaya) or a poet (Follain, Réda, Jacqmin) ? What are the linguistic means our authors resort to in order to write those events ? How can literary works reflect the author's vision of the world and how can they be ethically interpreted ? Our ultimate goal is indeed to give an ethical interpretation to our authors' works, a " poethics " (Pinson)

Abstract:
The present work focuses on the corpus of so-called “classical” utopian novels (1676-1710), combining three approaches, which are often used separately. The first method deals with their ideological dimension, within the context of a deep crisis in thought, and questions the problematic notion of modernity. The second method tackles the specific constitution of a fictional world, confronting two worlds – the European world and the utopian world –, by resorting to contemporary notions of fiction as “possible world” and as “version of the world”. The third method reflects on the paradoxical inscription of the novels within the classical philosophical and moral tradition, which it perpetuates or subverts, and focuses notably on the intertextual forms of this inscription. These options result in a thematic choice: the analysis focuses more specifically on the anthropological vision at work in the texts. The texts project, in an alternative world, a representation of man composed of figurative and conceptual patterns, which originate from their cultural and philosophical backgrounds, but which are recontextualized, organized and transformed, so as to partake of important displacements, which will consolidate in the triumphant Enlightenment, in the second half o the 18th century. Although modernity stems from a self-creating movement of rupture, in order to postulate a better world, it remains dependent on the old world it attempts to do away with. Classical utopias provide an exemplary laboratory of modernity, by textually actualizing the operations which embody modernity's dynamics, as well as some of its tensions, notably regarding the use of the notion of nature

Abstract:
Although two hundred years separate Jane Austen and Helen Fielding and, subsequently, also their portrayals of society, the similarities outweigh the differences. When juxtaposing Pride and Prejudice and Bridget Jones’s Diary in the light of feminism it is evident that both books provide clear examples of the prevailing situation of women in each time and place. The aspects of the study, which are especially important today, show both the development and some degree of stagnation of women’s rights and identities.

Abstract:
AbstractEven though the first press in Paris was set up in 1469, in rooms owned by the Collège de la Sorbonne, it took some time before the University's cursus ordinarius was regularly set in print. One of the first concerted efforts to reconfigure textbooks using print was carried out by Wolfgang Hopyland Johann Higman, beginning in the late 1480s. Their press—and their collaboration with the circle of Jacques Lefèvre d'Étaples—was taken up by the elder Henri Estienne and then Simon de Colines, who transformed the press into one of the most illustrious cases of the printing art in Europe, alongside Manutius and the later Estiennes. This chapter focuses on the routine claims these printers made about publishing the Sphaera of Sacrobosco and their own artful labors. It similarly examines their remarkable frontispieces within the context of a nascent tradition of astronomical frontispieces. Printerly claims to ingenuity and the relation of books and observation in these frontispieces undermine old historiographical dichotomies that oppose craft knowledge and book knowledge.

Abstract:
Abstract The question of Coetzee as public figure has long been of interest, since he shrinks from but also embraces the role. How far may its terms have shifted since it was last substantially addressed by a group of critics (2006)? The world has changed, and so have Coetzee’s circumstances. He is no longer primarily a South African novelist, but a global figure in a global world. How might his move to Australia, the financial crisis of 2008–2009, the defensive fetishization of contemporary forms of democracy and ‘egalitarianism’ and the exponential growth of critiques of neoliberalism affect how we read him? Following Joseph North, Simon During, and Jean-Jacques Lecercle, the chapter argues for a direct mode of critical intervention which will ‘go public’ for Coetzee whilst respecting his subtlety, bringing out how far his work, from its narrative and discursive modes to its tones, runs counter to the global, neoliberal monolith.
