Linton, Marisa. Terror and Politics. Edited by David Andress. Oxford University Press, 2014. http://dx.doi.org/10.1093/oxfordhb/9780199639748.013.027.

Abstract:
In a move away from overarching explanations of the Terror based on ideology, class or a ‘system of Terror’, historians have been investigating the web of connections between politics, ideology, tactics, emotions and the role of individuals. Consequently, a more complex picture of revolutionary politics has begun to emerge. This chapter uses these new approaches to examine the individual experiences of Jacobin leaders. It asks how far we can reconstruct the motives that led individual Jacobin leaders to choose terror. Personal factors, including friendships, influenced political decision-making to a far greater extent than previously acknowledged. Emotions, above all fear, played an integral role in the Terror. The Jacobin leaders needed to maintain their public identity as ‘men of virtue’ or risk being destroyed in the politicians’ terror. The chapter examines the genesis of the politicians’ terror that culminated in the mutual destruction of political factions during the Year II.

Abstract:
This chapter focuses on women’s rituals in the Hebrew Bible. While much work has been done recently on rituals, little attention has been paid so far to women’s rituals. Using a range of methodologies, from feminist hermeneutics to classics, ritual theory, memory studies, and reception, this chapter will attempt to unveil and understand the mechanisms which have marginalized women’s religious and ritualistic experiences. I will use the story of the Woman of Endor in 1 Samuel 28 as a test case and will show that the text’s patriarchal ideology may cover up a fuller political divinatory ritual akin to that of the Delphi oracle. In a second section, I will examine how the reception of this story in the work of Jacob Cornelisz van Oostsanen, a sixteenth-century painter from Amsterdam, also devalues and distorts women’s ritual through explicit associations with witchcraft as defined by the Malleus Maleficarum.

Chen, Yuan-tsung. The Secret Listener. Oxford University Press, 2021. http://dx.doi.org/10.1093/oso/9780197573341.001.0001.

Abstract:
From the time she was a girl, Yuan-tsung Chen had had a literary dream, and in 1950 she embarked on a literary career, a journey filled with thrilling and dangerous adventures. She went to Beijing and got a job in the Scenario Department of the Central Film Bureau, where she found herself in a front-row seat during China’s culture wars as Mao Zedong demanded that literature and art serve the Party, while writers wanted culture to be distinguishable from propaganda. Hence she became a secret listener. Purges ensued. She narrowly escaped the Anti-Rightist Purge of 1957 by marrying Jack Chen, who, because of his connections, had avoided political trouble so far. Mao’s “class war” continued. His Great Leap Forward caused the plunge in agricultural production and the greatest famine of the twentieth century. It led to Mao’s last and most violent purge, the Cultural Revolution. His hitmen, the Red Guards, viciously attacked Jack. Yuan-tsung went secretly to ask Zhou Enlai, the prime minister, for help. Zhou tried but failed to protect them. They were sent out of Beijing and consigned to a rural backwater village, cut off from all recourse to friends. But Yuan-tsung figured out a way to get in touch, right under the noses of the Red Guards, with Jack’s American brother-in-law and asked him to arrange a speaking tour for Jack. He did, and thus Jack was able to accept an invitation to lecture on Canadian and American campuses. After a tense wait, on the prime minister’s personal order Jack and Yuan-tsung got permits to leave the country.
