Murre, Jacob. Lectures on Algebraic Cycles and Chow Groups. Edited by Eduardo Cattani, Fouad El Zein, Phillip A. Griffiths, and Lê Dũng Tráng. Princeton University Press, 2017. http://dx.doi.org/10.23943/princeton/9780691161341.003.0009.

Abstract:
This chapter showcases five lectures on algebraic cycles and Chow groups. The first two lectures are over an arbitrary field, where they examine algebraic cycles, Chow groups, and equivalence relations. The second lecture also offers a short survey on the results for divisors. The next two lectures are over the complex numbers. The first of these features discussions on the cycle map, the intermediate Jacobian, Abel–Jacobi map, and the Deligne cohomology. The following lecture focuses on algebraic versus homological equivalence, as well as the Griffiths group. The final lecture, which returns to the arbitrary field, discusses the Albanese kernel and provides the results of Mumford, Bloch, and Bloch–Srinivas.

Abstract:
In this chapter, Noether’s theorem as a classical field theory is presented and the properties of variations are again discussed for fields (i.e. field variations, space variations, time variations, spacetime variations), resulting in the Noether condition. Quasisymmetries and spontaneous symmetry breaking are discussed, as well as local symmetry and global symmetry. Following these definitions, Noether’s first theorem and Noether’s second theorem are developed. The classical Schrödinger field is investigated and the key equations of classical mechanics are summarised into a single Lagrangian. Symmetry properties of the field action and equations of motion are then compared. The chapter discusses the energy–momentum tensor, the Klein–Utiyama theorem, the Liouville equation and the Hamilton–Jacobi equation. It also discusses material science, special orthogonal groups and complex scalar fields.

Abstract:
This chapter explains the Fichtean view that the act of self-positing is the ground of all constraint or necessitation, both in the theoretical and practical domains. The chapter also shows that Fichte developed the notion of the self-positing subject in order to meet reason’s demand for unconditioned explanation, without falling prey to the nihilistic consequences of philosophical reflection that Jacobi had diagnosed. To this end, the chapter explains Jacobi’s nihilism complaint in a manner that is conversant with current debates in metaphysics. In doing so, it shows that Jacobi and Fichte can still help us understand the place of freedom and the role of commitment within philosophical reflection. To bring the relationship between freedom and reason into focus, the chapter clarifies the idea that criticism and dogmatism represent two distinct, theoretically indemonstrable philosophical systems, and it offers two different interpretations of the idea that the German Idealist system is a “philosophy of practical postulates.”

Abstract:
Early ideas about optimization principles were brought in by an eclectic group of extraordinary thinkers: the Ancients (Hero, and Princess Dido), Fermat with his Principle of Least Time, the Bernoullis, Leibniz, Maupertuis, Euler, and d’Alembert. Also, Stevin was the first to invoke the impossibility of perpetual motion in a proof, and Huygens was the first to put Galilean Relativity to a quantitative test. The Swiss family of mathematical geniuses, the Bernoullis, tackled isoperimetric problems, such as the brachystochrone, and Johann Bernoulli discovered the Principle of Virtual Velocities. The flavour of the eighteenth century is shown in the evocative tale of the König affair, and the correspondence between Daniel Bernoulli and Euler. It is shown how symmetry arguments, leading ultimately to an energy-analysis, were competing with Newton’s force-analysis. The Principle of Least Action and Variational Mechanics, proper, were developed by Lagrange, Hamilton, and Jacobi.
