Botero, Ana María. "b-divisors on toric and toroidal embeddings." Doctoral thesis, Humboldt-Universität zu Berlin, 2017. http://dx.doi.org/10.18452/18140.

Full text
Abstract:
In this thesis we develop an intersection theory of toric and toroidal b-divisors on toric and toroidal embeddings, respectively. Our motivation comes from wanting to establish an arithmetic intersection theory on mixed Shimura varieties of non- compact type. The tools available until now do not define numerical invariants which are birationally invariant. First, we define toric b-divisors on toric varieties and an integrability notion of such divisors. We show that under suitable positivity assumptions toric b- divisors are integrable and that their degree is given as the volume of a convex set. Moreover, we show that the dimension of the space of global sections of a nef toric b-divisor is equal to the number of lattice points in this convex set and we give a Hilbert-Samuel type formula for its asymptotic growth. This generalizes classical results for classical toric divisors on toric varieties. As a by-product, we relate convex sets arising from toric b-divisors with Newton-Okounkov bodies. Then, we define toroidal b-divisors on toroidal varieties and an integrability notion of such divisors. We show that under suitable positivity assumptions toroidal b-divisors are integrable and that their degree is given as an integral with respect to a limit measure, which is a weak limit of discrete measures whose weights are defined via tropical intersection theory on the rational con- ical polyhedral complex attached to the toroidal variety. We also relate this limit measure with the surface area measure associated to a convex body. This relation enables us to compute integrals with respect to these limit measures ex- plicitly. Additionally, we give a canonical decomposition of the difference of two convex sets and we relate the volume of the pieces to tropical top intersection numbers. Finally, as an application, we compute the degree of the b-divisor of Jacobi forms of weight k and index m with respect to the principal congruence subgroup of level N >= 3 on the generalized universal elliptic curve and we show that it is meaningful to consider the b-divisorial approach instead of just fixing one canonical compactification.

Mentz, Jacobus Johannes. "A search for pulsating B-type variable stars in the southern open clusters NGC 6204 and Hogg 22 / Jacobus Johannes (Jaco) Mentz." Thesis, North-West University, 2013. http://hdl.handle.net/10394/9520.

Abstract:
The theory of stellar evolution and stellar structure relies on the observation of stars in di erent phases of their evolutionary cycle. The relation between observations and theory can be strengthened by obtaining observational data of a large sample of stars in a particular evolutionary phase. The search for Cephei stars, as conducted in this study, can contribute to the sample of known Cephei stars, where these interesting stars are massive non-supergiant early B-type stars, displaying pulsating behaviour which is not well understood. Stars tend to form in clusters where it can therefore be expected that young massive stars can be found in open clusters. For this reason two young southern open clusters were observed in order to search for B-type pulsating stars. The region of NGC 6204 and Hogg 22 was observed over a period of thirteen nights in Johnson B, V and I bands. NGC 6204 is believed to be the oldest cluster of the two at a distance of 0.8 kpc while the much younger Hogg 22 is more distant at 2.8 kpc. These two open clusters are located 6 arcminutes apart which made it possible to observe them simultaneously with a 12.8 12.8 arcminute eld of view. The observations were done with the newly installed 1600 telescope of the North-West University, South Africa. In order to do a variability search, periodic stars need to be identi ed from the cluster data, where a typical data set may contain thousands of scienti c images. In addition to the main motivation for this study, a pipeline was created in order to automate the photometry and data reduction processes. A Lomb-Scargle transform was applied to the stellar light curves in order to identify periodic sources. 354 signi cantly periodic stars were identi ed from the 3182 observed stars. Amongst them, two new possible Cephei stars were found together with a possible slowly pulsating B star (SPB), and numerous eclipsing binary systems. By using photometry of this region obtained by Forbes & Short (1996), instrumental magnitudes were transformed to a standard system in order to compare photometry results. From the constructed colour magnitude diagram of the two clusters, it could be seen that some stars, indicated by Forbes & Short (1996) to be cluster members, were in fact eld stars belonging to neither cluster. The reduction and photometry pipeline was implemented successfully on the data set, which also highlighted the importance of instrumentation and correct data analysis procedures. Possible improvements were identi ed in order to overcome di culties experienced during this study.

The Bacterial genus Haemophilus is inclued in the family Pasteutelleaceae and the influenzae specie (Hi) is the most important in human infections. Hi includes capsular serotypes (a-f) and non-capsulated strains (NT), which are responsible for many infections. Haemophilus influenzae b (Hib) has been one of the main cause of meningitis in many countries worldwide. It has been also associated with other severe infections such as epiglottitis, septic arthritis, bacteremia, pneumonia and septicemia, mainly in children. Since 1988 these infections are preventable by Hib conjugate vaccine consisting of PRP and a carrier protein, and it has been included in the national vaccination program (PNI/ MS) in 1999. After the introduction of Hib conjugate vaccine, diseases caused by Hib had significantly decreased in several countries where the vaccine was introduced into their immunization schedules however, other serotypes, including HiNT, has been isolated with greater frequency as agents of infectious meningitis which is currently one of the main etiological agents of Acute Otitis Media (AOM) and the subject of important researches on new vaccines. Colonization is essential to start the infection, and children from daycare centers present variable rates of the bacteria in their nasopharynx. The importance of this study on an ongoing line of research at INCQS-FIOCRUZ with emphasis on the study of strains isolated after the introduction of the vaccine, is associated with the monitor of carriers in a closed population (daycare) to contribute to the knowledge of the circulation of Hi after thirteen years using conjugate vaccine against Hib in Brazil, which reduced but did not prevent the occurrence of the disease. The main objective of this study was to determine the occurrence of Hi in children attending a daycare center in Jacobina, Bahia. For the study we collected material from the nasopharynx of 73 children. We found a colonization rate of 78.08% and all isolates were classified as HiNT. Biotype III was the most prevalent. The study of antimicrobial susceptibility showed ampicillin-resistant strains producing and non-producing β-lactamase. We also observed high rates of resistance to ampicillin (41.8%) and trimethoprim+sulfametoxazol (67.2%). The gene blaTEM, which is primarily responsible for ampicillin resistance was found in 81.8% of the strains. The blaROB gene, was not observed among the strains analyzed. The PBP3 gene of βLNAR samples was sequenced and changes were observed, the major changes were in positions 547V → 547I found in three samples, 422N→ 422S and 273S→ 273F. Strain susceptibility was evaluated against amoxicillin/clavulanic acid, ceftriaxone, rifampicin, chloranphenicol and were susceptible. This study confirms the efficacy of the vaccine against Hib and points to the relevance to vigilance HiNT, as presented high percentage of colonization and resistance to some antimicrobials.

Abstract:
We conducted three experiments to study the responses of regeneration and the impacts of different control techniques on guinea grass (Megathyrsus maximus (Jacq.) B. K. Simon & S. W. L. Jacobs) in a 20-year reforestation site. In the first and second experiments, 30 plots of 10 x 20 m were installed and divided into three groups with 10 plots each: control, mowing with costal trimmers and mowing following Roundup Transorb R ® (glyphosate) application. We sampled all individuals of woody species > 1 m, and to sample individuals > 10 cm and < 1 m, two sub-plots of 5 x 5 m were established in each plot. Only in experiment 1, we accompanied only individuals who were previously marked before the first mowing of M. maximus, for checking the mortality and damage on regeneration by the techniques. In third experiment, 45 plots of 5 x 5 m were installed and divided in three groups with 10 plots each: control, manual weeding for a year and manual weeding for two. All individuals of woody species > 10 cm were sampled. Data like abundance and species richness, cover, number of seedlings and seed bank of M. maximus, canopy cover, recruitment and mortality were collected. In the first experiment, there was no difference between the mortality of removal treatments with natural mortality find in control, and only in the treatment with exclusive use of coastal trimmers, abundance and species richness for individuals > 1 m remained unchanged. The final cost of the mowing treatment was 34.1% higher than the cost of herbicide treatment, and even if the cost to perform new interventions decrease for both, there are increased costs when there is need for interventions scattered over small areas. In second experiment, the amount of guinea grass seeds was lower in areas with more regenerants, and with improved regeneration of control, there were no differences for the three groups, however, plants < 1 m were strongly reduced in glyphosate treatment. In third experiment, the number of guinea grass seedlings decreased with repeated removals, and after four years, the total abundance and pioneer species richness were greater in removal treatments. Competition with M. maximus appears to be associated more strongly with other parameters than light, and with pioneer species. Guinea grass causes the slow succession site, but is being suppressed by the vegetation gradually, emphasizing the importance of the tree structure, proximity to the forest fragment (to arrival of new seedlings) and isolation of the fire. The techniques can be used to accelerate the succession site, however, the use of glyphosate should be restricted to areas with low winter canopy cover (< 70%), as theses demanding more maintenance, and because the technique is more damaging on regeneration, since there was high mortality (73%) of individuals < 1 m in areas with dense infestation (100%).

Abstract:
The three recitals consisted of performances of original eighteenth, nineteenth and twentieth century solo works for trombone with the exception of Lyric Suite for Euphonium and Piano by Donald White, Divertimento for Trumpet, Trombone and Piano by Boris Blacher, and Dialogue and Dance for Trombone and Tuba by Newel Kay Brown. The premiere performance of Straight As An Arrow for B-flat-F Trombone and Prepared Tape by Ronn Cox and Dean Crocker was also included. After presenting a brief biography and discussing Gordon Jacob's (1895-1984) stylistic influences, the lecture continues with a Tonal, Motivic and Formal analysis of his three works for solo tenor trombone: Concerto for Trombone and Orchestra, Concertino for Trombone and Wind Orchestra, and the Trombone Sonata. Tonality, modality, polymodality and free association of pitches are elements that are present at one time or another in these compositions. Jacob's inclination for using the folk song style is evident in his writing, especially in the slow movements. Introductions, transition areas, and secondary themes, with tonally ambiguous harmonies and instrumental concepts of melodies, create a tension that is released by the return to tonality in the areas that follow. Treatment of rhythmic and melodic motives helps produce the special quality found in Gordon Jacob's compositions. Over half the themes in the works being investigated are built around motivic development. Neoclassicism results from the use of forms rooted in earlier centuries, but the choice of key centers gives these forms a new life. Jacob's composition of absolute music, as well as his use of the older compositional techniques of parallel harmonies and slow introductions, reflect neoclassical practices. The performance of Jacob's pieces is facilitated by his use of musical materials idiomatic to the instrument.

In this thesis, three loss formulas based on Jacobian Based Distribution Factor (JBDF) have been proposed. Different from the conventional ones that expressed by network parameters, the proposed loss formulas approach the transmission losses by real and reactive power line flows without any assumptions. The line flows can be formulated by JBDF sensitivity factors. These new formulas have also been involved in the computations of economic dispatch. Different loading conditions are included in the computations to test their performance. Finally, two sample systems, IEEE 14-Bus system and IEEE 30-Bus system, are used to test the accuracy and goodness of the proposed methods. As demonstrated by the numerical results, it appears that the proposed methods have good accuracy for the computations of transmission loss and economic dispatch problem. Even though needn’t any assumptions, they remain good accuracy when load demands change from base case in either conforming or nonconforming conditions. As a summary, the proposed three loss formulas are very accurate and suitable for real time applications.
