Abstract:
This chapter details the vicissitudes of race and poverty shaped J. W. Green’s upbringing in the Deep South as well as his adjustment to urban living as an adult. His lack of education, employment opportunity, and personal empowerment led to a “life on the streets.” Stoic faith saw him through a life and death in poverty. Mr. Green teaches us that everyone comes to this phase of life with strengths to cull from their cultural and spiritual beliefs. Mr. Green also teaches us that dignified dying does not require the unfettered exercise of personal autonomy, although a deep and abiding respect for the self-worth of the individual is necessary.

Abstract:
A chapter addressing the formation of the subject, and the rejection of the assumption that gender and sex are simply given, in various feminist theory paradigms. The project of advancing gender justice requires close attention to the ways in which categories of biological sex and gender, in intersectional relations with race, ethnicity, nationality, class and so on, are historically constructed and deployed to bring subjects into being, even as these same categories are resisted and re-negotiated at the same time in an always agonistic field of social relations. Special reference is made to three pairs of theoretical paradigms and practitioners: liberal feminism and Nancy J. Hirschmann; antiracist socialist feminism and Angela Davis; Derridean-Foucauldian theory and Judith Butler.

Abstract:
This chapter explores the concepts of performativity and performance in feminist theory. It begins by examining the idea of gender performativity in the work of Judith Butler, tracing its development from her earliest writings through Gender Trouble and Bodies That Matter, and showing how Butler’s initial argument draws from phenomenology and from performance studies (where acts are understood in theatrical terms). This is followed by a discussion of gender understood ethnomethodologically as a type of routine performance or form of “doing.” The second half of the chapter focuses on linguistic theories of performativity, derived from J. L. Austin and Jacques Derrida, and how they have been used by feminists, such as Catharine MacKinnon, Rae Langton, and Judith Butler, to illustrate pornography and hate speech. After a discussion of the performativity of pornography, the focus turns to citationality, resignification, and “talking back.”

Abstract:
Abstract:
In the first debates over the form the national theatre movement should take, it would seem as if the Ibsenites, George Moore and Edward Martyn, lost out to Yeats with his emphasis on a mythico-poetic theatre. However, a realist model of theatre, introduced first by the Fays influenced by Antoine, took root and was to become the Abbey’s dominant form, so much so that Yeats would admit in 1919 that the dominance of realism in the Irish theatre had become for him ‘a discouragement and a defeat’. This chapter argues that the tradition of Irish realism as manifested in the plays of T. C. Murray, Lennox Robinson, R. J. Ray, and others begins as a form of social critique, predicated on the belief that reflecting Irish society accurately would form the grounds for addressing social issues. However, as realism evolved in Irish theatre, it increasingly lost its critical edge.

Abstract:
This chapter considers how the Resistance to President Donald J. Trump and the current Republican majorities in the US House and Senate has coalesced over the last year and what the prospects are that it will bring about fundamental political change, including a major electoral reversal in 2018 and 2020. To do so, it places the Resistance in the context of three recent dramatic changes in American politics: the intense, ongoing, and asymmetric polarization of the two major parties; the reorientation of American politics around issues of race and immigration; and the declining responsiveness of political elites to the views of the nonaffluent in an age of skyrocketing inequality. The Resistance is a reflection of these powerful tides, but it is also swimming against them. The question is whether it will be able to turn back these tides, which ultimately threaten our democracy itself.

Abstract:
This chapter focuses on Fannie Barrier Williams' early life. Fannie Barrier was born on February 12, 1855, to mixed-race parents, in Brockport, an overwhelmingly white community in New York. Brockport was north of slavery, and according to census records, no resident of the town had ever owned enslaved people. The village was a secure and supportive place for Barrier, with no racially divided public spaces. This chapter first provides a background on Brockport and Fannie's parents, Harriet Prince Barrier and Anthony J. Barrier, as well as her early education, including her enrollment at the Brockport Collegiate Institute. It considers how the school provided Fannie with the necessary skills to pursue the personal, public, and professional life that was not available to her mother's generation. It also examines how the northern location of Brockport and the convergence of several social, political, and economic factors sheltered Fannie and her siblings and greatly restricted the negative impact of racism and discrimination on their lives.
