Abstract:
In collaboration with the Karolinska University Hospital, this research was carried out with the aim of executing a consequence analysis of the new regulation (EU) 2017/746. The consequences of the regulation regarding access, distribution, manufacturing and in-house production of in vitro diagnostic products were examined for various departments at the Karolinska University Hospital. This was investigated through an extensive literature study and interviews that were conducted digitally and through email. Of the departments examined, attention was drawn to the fact that only Lab & Primary Health Care and the Karolinska University Laboratory were affected by the new regulation. The availability of products may be affected as a consequence of the new requirements for risk classification and the notified bodies. If the manufacturer does not meet the new requirements, this may lead to a shortage of materials and products, which can affect Lab & Primary Care and the Karolinska University Laboratory. Lab & Primary Health Care will be affected by the requirements for distribution in the new regulation if they decide to distribute new in vitro diagnostic products to other businesses. The Karolinska University Laboratory has a production that they currently CE mark according to the old directive and an in-house production. In order for the Karolinska University Laboratory to continue its own production, it is required that they meet the requirements imposed on in-house production in the new regulation. With continued CE marking of the products, they will be classified as manufacturers and need to meet its requirements. In summary, it can be stated that both Lab & Primary Health Care and the Karolinska University Laboratory have three paths to go; distribute, produce in-house or manufacture in vitro diagnostic products. Depending on the decision they make, they are classified differently according to the new regulation (distributors, in-house manufacturers or manufacturers) and thus have different requirements to follow.

Abstract:
1. ACTUALITY OF THIS RESEARCH: Sixty-five percent of teachers in secondary schools under the jurisdiction of the Transvaal Education Department are female. The professionalism, work motivation and work satisfaction of female teachers are often questioned possibly owing to the ostensible discriminatory conditions of service meted out to female teachers. In this research it is postulated (and confirmed by the literature study) that a distinct set of needs applies to female teachers. It is important for the leaders in education, (e.g. headmasters, heads of department) to be conversant with these special needs which may influence female teachers' motivation to work. The general aim of this research can therefore be related to the question: Which factors influence the female teacher's motivation to work? Specific aims of this research are inter alia: to determine - by means of a questionnaire - whether the female teacher's professional needs and aspirations are being met in education; to determine the discrepancy (if any) between the female teacher's needs and the satisfaction thereof; to identify factors to be remedied. 2. METHOD OF RESEARCH: A questionnaire, based on the study of relevant literature and encompassing the same needs as those of the Minnesota Importance Questionnaire was designed, but with the additional purpose to determine also the extent to which these needs are being satisfied in education. Twenty-seven of the 24 7 secondary schools under the jurisdiction of the Transvaal Education Department were selected at random and the research sample consisted of all 806 female teachers attached to these schools. The empirical data was statistically processed by means of a CHAID analysis. 3. INTERPRETATION OF EMPIRICAL DATA: Female teachers who participated in this research indicated the need for an amicable relationship with their pupils as the need which motivated them to harder work. The need for compatibility between their role as mother/homemaker and their role as teacher featured strongly in the responses. Needs relating to the need for compatibility of roles, such as the need for a fair work load, the need for fair working hours (extramural activities and preparation included) were rated highly. Extrinsic needs such as salary and security were also regarded as fairly important. The empirical data reveals that the female teacher's social needs are sufficiently satisfied. Extrinsic needs such as security, fair application of school policy and reasonable supervision are also satisfied. Needs which enjoy little or no satisfaction relate to administrative or policy aspects of education such as salary, fair evaluation for merit and promotion, participation in decision-making and the need for a fair work load. Female heads of department experienced more work satisfaction and satisfaction of their needs than teachers on post level 1. Female teachers in temporary posts showed a significant lack of motivation. English speaking teachers were significantly less satisfied with the application of school policy. Afrikaans-speaking female teachers' need to achieve and their need for more authority were significantly less satisfied than those of their English-speaking counterparts. Married female teachers were more satisfied with their salaries, but those with pre-school children experienced less satisfaction with regard to their extramural involvement and were more dissatisfied with their work load. A significant number of female teachers indicated (unnecessary) administrative work as a demotivating factor. 4. CONCLUSION: Most female teachers are not satisfied with extrinsic factors such as salary (especially the disparity between the salary of male and female teachers) . Extrinsic factors, however, do not contribute directly towards the female teacher's relationship with her pupils, her pride in her work, her self-esteem, and her love for her particular subject - these are the factors which really determine her motivation. The married female teacher's circumstances at home will determine her career commitment and influence her motivation to work.

Franks, Steven Craig. "IVDS System: Channel Simulation and Repeater Unit Design." Thesis, Virginia Tech, 1996. http://hdl.handle.net/10919/35438.

Full text
Abstract:
In this thesis, an Interactive Video Data Service (IVDS) is developed. This service provides a mechanism for television viewers to interact with the program they are watching. Possible interactions include purchasing products from home shopping programs and requesting information from advertisers. Within the project, two areas were focused upon: channel simulation and the Repeater Unit. Additionally, the overall system was discussed along with its background. The purpose of channel simulation was to demonstrate the viability of the unique communication channel model proposed for the IVDS system. This channel was implemented using uni-directional transmissions, without acknowledgments. The Repeater Unit was designed to be a message processing system, intended to relay messages from system users to the home office. The design entailed both hardware and software. The hardware requirements were for a high level design, while the software required not only design, but implementation.

On one hand the theses offers a view of the pure theory of M&A's, on the other hand its connection to reality. The basic processes are the definition of the IVD market, analyses of the sources of income in the healthcare in relation to the possibilities of company value growth. At the end of the thesis the hypothesis is verified by a real lab acquisition case.

Hawes, Aaron George. "The Design of an IVDS World Wide Web Browser Architecture." Thesis, Virginia Tech, 1997. http://hdl.handle.net/10919/35877.

Full text
Abstract:
An IVDS (Interactive Video Data Service) uses an interactive television system to transmit data to and from subscribers' homes. IVDS allows the viewer to interact with content provided on the television using a remote control. A typical IVDS application would be ordering an advertised product or playing along with a quiz show.

The Virginia Tech Center for Wireless Telecommunications (CWT), under a contract with Interactive Return Service, Inc., is developing an IVDS system in which content is provided through the television cable system in the form of audio codes. A special remote control can detected these audio codes and query the user for input. The return path for this system is a wireless channel. The remote control contains a spread spectrum transmitter that transmits packets to a Repeater unit residing within a quarter mile of the user's home.

With the popularity of the World Wide Web soaring, many companies are announcing internet appliances that will bring the content of the web to the user at a fraction of the cost of a standard personal computer. CWT has been contracted to extend the core IVDS system to provide a web browsing capability, allowing the user to browse the web with only the remote control. This thesis outlines the requirements of the IVDS Web Browser System. The different hardware design concepts are documented. The final Browser System specification is presented, as well as a board-level description of the Decoder Unit that is part of this final Browser System. Finally, a detailed description, current status, and simulation results are presented for the FPGA (Field Programmable Gate Array) that serves as the controller for the Decoder Unit.

This essay has touched Ivar Johnson's works "Arbete och livsbejakelse" (1939) which are placed on the facade of Östergötlands museum. The purpose of this thesis is to describe the history about the origin of the artwork and examine its relationship to the working-class themes and ideology. The history about the origin of the artwork has been written by a narrative review of protocol, from the comittee of museum building and the contemporary press. For the survey of the work's content and motives image, an analysis has been made based on Erwin Panofsky and Jan-Gunnar Sjölins methods. A discussion is made after the analysis and the results show that one can see the ideological tendencies in the work and that the motives can be seen following the work themes.

Horowitz, Farrah B. "Evaluation of epidural morphine and incisional bupivacaine for analgesia following hemilaminectomy in the dog." Thesis, Virginia Tech, 2009. http://hdl.handle.net/10919/33275.

Full text
Abstract:
A blind, placebo â controlled clinical trial was performed to evaluate the postoperative analgesic effect of topically administered, intraoperative, epidural morphine (Duramorphâ ¢) and intramuscular infiltration of the incision site with bupivacaine prior to closure of the skin in dogs undergoing hemilaminectomy for Hansen type I Intervertebral Disk Disease (IVDD). Thirty-three dogs were randomly allocated into four treatment groups: epidural Duramorphâ ¢ with incisional bupivacaine (DUR/BUP), epidural saline with incisional bupivacaine (SAL/BUP), epidural Duramorphâ ¢ with incisional saline (DUR/SAL), and epidural saline with incisional saline (SAL/SAL). All dogs were premedicated with a standard protocol and were anesthetized with propofol and isoflurane. After surgery, scores were assigned using a visual analog scale (VAS) for both pain and sedation and a composite pain scale (CPS). In addition, a von Frey anesthesiometer was used to determine pain thresholds at 1 cm and 3 cm from the surgical incision line (primary hyperalgesia) as well as on the lateral aspect of the stifle (secondary hyperalgesia). Assessments were carried out at fixed intervals over the 48 hour postoperative period. Significant differences were found between those groups treated with the epidural Duramorphâ ¢ and those that received epidural saline. Those dogs in the DUR/BUP and DUR/SAL groups exhibited lower von Frey pain thresholds and higher VAS and CPS scores than the SAL/BUP and SAL/SAL groups. The administration of bupivacaine had no significant effect on any measured outcome. The authors conclude that topically administered epidural Duramorphâ ¢ and intramuscular incisional bupivacaine do not enhance analgesia following hemilaminectomy in the dog.

Clifford, Ivor David. "Object-oriented multi-physics applied to spatial reactor dynamics / Ivor David Clifford." Thesis, North-West University, 2007. http://hdl.handle.net/10394/1656.

Full text
Abstract:
Traditionally coupled field reactor analysis has been carried out using several loosely coupled solvers, each having been developed independently from the others. In the field of multi-physics, the current generation of object-oriented toolkits provides robust close coupling of multiple fields on a single framework. This research investigates the suitability of such frameworks, in particular the Open-source Field Operation and Manipulation (OpenFOAM) framework, for the solution of spatial reactor dynamics problems. For this a subset of the theory of the Time-dependent Neutronics and Temperatures (TINTE) code, a time-dependent two-group diffusion solver, was implemented in the OpenFOAM framework. This newly created code, called diffusionFOAM, was tested for a number of steady-state and transient cases. The solver was found to perform satisfactorily, despite a number of numerical issues. The object-oriented structure of the framework allowed for rapid and efficient development of the solver. Further investigations suggest that more advanced transport methods and higher order spatial discretization schemes can potentially be implemented using such a framework as well.

Goedde, Todd William. "Decoder Board Hardware/Software Development in Wireless Interactive Video Data Service System." Thesis, Virginia Tech, 1997. http://hdl.handle.net/10919/35871.

Abstract:
The Interactive Video Data Service (IVDS) system allows consumers to browse the Internet, request information on products or services, make purchases, indicate preferences, and perform other interactive applications. To provide this service, the IVDS system has three subsystems: Consumer Control (CC), Cell Repeater (CR), and Host subsystem. In the CC subsystem, an IVDS transceiver box is placed near a television set. Once the consumer sends a command to the transceiver box using a standard television/VCR/Cable remote control, the transceiver box receives information embedded in the television audio, and then transmits the information to the CR subsystem as a radio frequency (RF) spread spectrum message. The CR subsystem decodes the spread spectrum message and forwards it to the Host subsystem for processing. Located in the CR subsystem, a custom designed circuit board, called the decoder board, uses surface mounted components to decode and packetize the spread spectrum message for transfer to the CR main processor. This paper provides a functional description of the hardware components on the decoder board, and describes the hardware/software developed for interfacing the decoder board to the radio receiver and to the CR main processor. Hardware modifications were needed to correct timing problems between components. Software was developed to initialize the components for downconverting, despreading, and demodulating spread spectrum messages, and to packetize them for transfer to the CR main processor. This paper also discusses the tests used to verify both the performance of the decoder board software and the operation of the hardware components.

Lee, Tsz Yan Juliana. "Technique and method development for intervertebral disc (IVD) research." Thesis, Imperial College London, 2015. http://hdl.handle.net/10044/1/43799.

Full text
Abstract:
Intervertebral disc (IVD) degeneration is one of the major causes of low back pain. The direct and indirect cost of managing back pain posts heavy socioeconomic burden to the society. Improved technologies and techniques together with well documented experiments will benefit the research field by saving effort in doing the optimization in every laboratory and avoiding experiment failure due to incomplete understanding of the procedures. These can accelerate scientific discovery, reduce the sacrifice of animals and enable a more effective use of funding. Nucleus pulposus (NP) is the central part of IVD. Differences in matrix compositions in human NP clinical samples demand different cell isolation protocols for optimal results but there is no clear guide about this to date. Sub-optimal protocols may result in low cell yield, limited reliability of results or even failure of experiments. We experimented different isolation protocols to study different parameters involved and suggested some rules for cell isolation in three main applications: RNA extraction for phenotyping, cell isolation for cell culture, and characterization by flow cytometry. In addition, instead of extracting RNA from isolated cells, extraction of RNA from tissues directly may avoid the change of RNA levels during the cell isolation process. However, extraction of RNA directly from human and large animal IVD tissue is technically challenging due to its tough nature, low cell-to-matrix ratio and high proteoglycan content. Thus we developed a method for RNA extraction from bovine disc tissues by integrating the use of cryosectioning, additional phase separation and high salt precipitation into conventional guanidinium thiocyanate based method. With this method, RNA could be extracted from the NP tissue directly but the concentration was low. A shift toward 270 nm was observed in its UV spectrum which was due to phenol contamination. This caused an overestimation of RNA concentration. Hence we developed a computational method based on UV spectra for correcting the overestimated concentrations of RNA contaminated with phenol. The accuracy of concentration increased substantially with the use of the correction formula. Mesenchymal stem cells (MSCs) have great potential in IVD engineering and hence we studied the isolation and culturing of MSCs from different sources. Effect of cell shape was reported for MSCs but not for NP cells. Micropatterning can be used to pattern cells into different shapes and arrangements. Therefore, we optimized the preparation of bovine NP cell micropatterns and also investigated the preparation of cell micropatterns for confocal microscopy. Besides, we developed methods to study the gene expression of cells on patterns by RT-qPCR with and without prior selection of cells of interest by laser capture microdissection (LCM). In short, different methods related to IVD research were developed and optimized. With improved methods together with a better understanding of the underlying rationale, researchers can save time and cost in their experiments and reduce experiment failure rate. This will help to accelerate researches. New methods also enable studies which were not feasible in the past.

Abstract:

In 1949, a Swedish author, Ivar Lo-Johansson (1901–1990), started an action that had the aim of improving conditions for old people in Sweden This action lasted from 1949 until 1957. It started when the author and a photographer made a journey around the country to enable Lo-Johansson to form a conception of the conditions under which old people lived in old people’s homes.

The journey was documented in words and pictures ands gave rise to a series of articles in a magazine, Vi, in the spring of 1949. The articles were followed in the same year by the publication of a book of photographs, Ålderdom (Old Age), and of four talks which Lo-Johansson broadcast on the radio during the autumn. In 1952 the author published a polemical pamphlet, Ålderdoms-Sverige (Old Age in Sweden), which contained fierce attacks on the social authorities for the lack of proper care that Lo-Johansson considered that the old people were subjected to. In the book the author proposed a number of measures to improve the situation of the elderly. Among other things he emphasised the importance of giving the elderly a meaningful existence and treating them in such a way that their mental health was not threatened. Lo-Johansson’s principal goal was that institutions to care for healthy old people should not be needed in the future – his slogan was that care at home should replace care in homes.

This dissertation describes how Lo-Johansson’s campaign for better care for the elderly was implemented, the reactions that followed, and the ways in which his proposals for improvements in care for the elderly were put into practice. Another task in this study has been to attempt to define some of the care structures that governed attitudes towards the elderly at the end of the 1940s and to see the extent to which they were changed in the 1950s as a consequence of Lo-Johansson’s action.

The conclusions of the dissertation are, in brief, that the author’s action resulted in a new focus in the social policy and a change in the structure of values in which concepts such as human dignity, integrity, humanity and the satisfaction of mental needs have obtained a footing in both the social policy debate and in the practical exercise of new forms of care for the elderly at that time.

Herendeen, David Warren. "Lanes of Severn: Ivor Gurney, as illustrated by his war songs, 1915-1918." Diss., The University of Arizona, 1993. http://hdl.handle.net/10150/186264.

Full text
Abstract:
Ivor Gurney was born in Gloucester on August 28, 1890; he died on December 26, 1937, age 47, in a London asylum. Though he had a relatively short life, he lived during a most dynamic time in British history; he was a part of the rebirth of British song and the trauma of World War One. These events, by dint of his experiences, are given a unique voicing through his songs, for Gurney was in no way a normal composer. He was an unbalanced genius whose turbulent life and endearing personality touched many of the central figures of British music in this period. His 300 songs and song sketches fall into roughly four periods of composition and parallel this dramatic life from schooling, to war, to mental breakdown. This study examines his considerable song output through the investigation of his second and most intense period of composition: 1915-1918, the war years. Although the war period is nowhere near his most prolific, the songs composed during war's chaos provide a good departure point for ordered investigation; they are a microcosm and in many ways his best and most innovative work. Six songs from this period are investigated: 'By a Bierside', 'The Fiddler of Dooney', 'In Flanders', 'The Folly of Being Comforted', 'The Scribe', and 'Severn Meadows'. These songs, written "in the trenches" strongly reflect Gurney's stylistic tendencies, define his compositional importance and personal values. The analysis for each song will begin with the circumstance in which it was composed. Gurney's choice of text, approach to declamation, harmonic language, use of the piano, and aesthetic intent will then be related to his environment, as this significantly influenced his song composition. Since he was an avid writer and also considered one of Britain's best war poets, Gurney's war correspondence and poetry will be used to support and clarify these analytical and aesthetic observations.

Abstract:

Abstract:
This thesis offers a comprehensive study of the life story of a union worker, social commentator and film director.A theorical investigation was necessary in order to expose the narrration to a dialectic and historical materialism. It allowed to identify the main contardictions to define key knowledge and apply the marxian approach. We identified eight categories allowing new thought processes and reflecting eight keywords. The first stems from the analysis of the narration, while the second is future-oriented.The workers’ writing of their own life and experience brings several epistemological obstacles and do not allow any considerable change of the working conditions. We advanced the hypothesis that current digital technologies allow to whitness these work experiences through a method using both photography (practical approach) and film – with the interaction of the peers and experts - (theorical approach.)We will conclude that workers’ roles are significantly different from what testimonies usually lead the public to believe. This thesis’ perspective aims at creating collective view points supporting democratic work conditions, where protagonists are able to identify their own intentions as well as other’s. To this end, we will emphasize the necessity of work cliniques. Our approach is in line with Ivar Oddone’s teachings, supporting a method allowing to collectively read the workplace experience via a movement from realistic to concrete, between two types of analysis

Abstract:
A popular application that runs on a Voice-over-IP network is the Interactive Voice Response (IVR), which provides a way for interacting with an end user's phone via a telephony interface by presenting a set of audible menu options, and collecting the user's Dual Tone Multi-Frequency responses as the user presses the telephone numeric keypad, and recording the user's voice. This thesis takes a closer look into IVR systems on an IP-based network, specifically in networks that support the Session Initiation Protocol (SIP) for controlling the telephony signalling, and more specifically on IVR systems that have their SIP signalling controlled by a SIP Application Server (SIPAS) implementing the SipServlet 1.0 or 1.1 specifications and where a SIP-based Media Server is used to stream IVR media to the end-user. We describe existing ways for supporting an IVR development in a SIP network, and then we propose an alternative way of accomplishing the same task: the IVRObject. With the help of prototypes, the IVRObject is compared with the existing state of the art against three criteria: (a) how easy it is to develop, (b) how portable the development solution is, (c) and how scalable the solution is in order to sustain a high call volume. As a conclusion, it will be highlighted that the IVRObject provides an easy mechanism for development of IVR-based applications running on a SIPAS, that it is portable to different media server vendors, and that it supports a test strategy that can be leveraged to improve software development quality and faster development. This makes the IVRObject a good alternative especially for enterprise-based IVR applications where scalability is less of an issue than in carrier-space applications.

Abstract:

Abstract:

The Swedish working-class author Ivar Lo-Johansson (1901-1990) wrote a collection of one hundred short stories between the years 1968-1972. His other productions, generally speaking, have partially different social reform purposes, but, according to himself, these short stories were written with the intention to be totally free of tendencies (even though he himself doubted that he succeeded with this).

During the same period that these short stories were published, the Swedish social democrats were under the challenge of radical movements that, mainly on the radical left’s ideological foundation, had a relatively strong influence in Sweden, among other countries, from the mid 1960’s to the late 1970’s. Since Lo-Johansson mainly seemed to have supported the politics of the social democrats, the purpose of the investigation in this thesis has been to see if he – in the three short stories: Vikingakärlek (1970), Rikslögnaren (1971) and Ansgars resa till Sverige (1972) – is conveying an ideological use of history and basic political values that were used by the social democratic party during this time period. I have also tried to conclude if he is refuting ideas that two of the radical movements, in different ways, were using to challenge the social democracy of that time. These two movements are 1) the new left and 2) radical feminism. The new left opposed, among other things, parliamentary democracy and promoted a revolution. Radical feminism instead challenged social democracy by emphasizing the private sphere as a central cause for the continuing submission of women in society, something that previous to this movement had been neglected. More specifically I have tried to map out if the new left’s ideological use of history and some of its foundational political values are refuted, and if radical feminism’s explanation for the cause of female submission is confuted.

My conclusions are that Lo-Johansson, in the three short stories, verified the legitimacy of social democracy’s ideological use of history and foundational political values, and, at the same time, he repudiated the new left’s ideological use of history and foundational political values. His view of the cause of women’s submission in society is more ambivalent. In one of his short stories he seemed to be pointing at biological causes, which, among other things, contributed to the legitimacy of the gender system that was a part of social democratic politics, mainly up to the 1960’s. In the other two short stories it instead seemed that he agreed with radical feminism’s ideas of patriarchy as the cause, even though it is not clear if he truly agreed that this system needed to be abolished.

Abstract:
Drawing extensively from empirical research into British film fan magazines such as Picture Show and Picturegoer, this thesis demonstrates how such secondary media were crucial in shaping Novello's star persona and the ways in which nuanced references to Art History, Philosophy and Classical Greek iconography and myths informed his iconography. Juxtaposing such eclectic influences with textual analysis of his films themselves, I argue that Novello's most singular stardom in the twenties -- an extension of the fame he achieved through his composition of one of defining songs of the war, `Keep the Home Fires Burning' -- is founded on a historically specific and, in the broadest sense, queer appeal to the disparate elements of his mass audience. This appeal, I demonstrate, engages with a range of contemporary discourses around nostalgia, sexuality and the symptoms of war-trauma. I argue that in the films of Ivor Novello we apprehend an essentially modern, quite paradoxical and sometimes disturbing product of his time, rather than the anachronistic, histrionic figure presented thus far by critics.

Shah, Raza. "Repeater Unit Software Development in Wireless Interactive Video Data Service System." Thesis, Virginia Tech, 2000. http://hdl.handle.net/10919/31889.

Full text
Abstract:
Information, products and services can be requested and purchased via the Interactive Video Data Service (IVDS) system developed by The Center for Wireless Telecommunications, Virginia Tech. This system consists of three components - User control, Repeater unit and a Host program. The user requests a service using his/her television remote (User control). A transceiver (User control) located near the television set responds to user requests by extracting information hidden in the commercial's audio, and transmitting information to the repeater unit. The receiver unit decodes received messages and forwards them in capsules to the Host component. Thus the user requests are received by the host system. The repeater unit is a real-time operating system with its in-built hardware and software functions. Application specific software can be written using the existing software drivers and libraries (kernel) to decode and process messages. The Host program monitors and responds to received user messages. This thesis focuses on the repeater unit hardware setup and discusses the application software implementation developed to receive messages from the transceiver box and to retransmit the messages in a different format over the Internet. The software specifications included no incoming message loss, ability to statically hold 10000 user messages, time-stamp and location-stamp (using a GPS receiver) forwarded messages, scheduling messages for retransmission based on message priority, and retransmission using the point-to-point protocol (PPP) using a dial-up modem connection. In order to achieve better performance the existing software kernel was re-written in some sections. This thesis also discusses some of the system limitations from the repeater unit's perspective.

Abstract:

Abstract:
Mobile phones and Interactive Voice Response (IVR) applications are being progressively used in developing countries to collect voice-based reports about bad governance or poor public service delivery, reported by citizens. Such systems (e.g. Avaaj Otalo, Foroba Blon, etc.) can give an opportunity to rural users in developing countries to easily influence and participate in public affairs. Despite the ongoing efforts on using such solutions, the lack of an efficient system of administration can cause delays in broadcasting the collected reports as quickly as possible, to reach the relevant authorities. This thesis presents the results of a real-world deployment of an administrative functionality for an IVR system called U-Call, used in the Northern districts of Uganda. U-Call Administrative Functionality (UCAF) interacts with the U-Call administrators through mobile phones and gives the moderator access to the registered users. It allows administrators to easily publish and tag audio reports over the Web using their mobile phones. It also uses a semantic tagging module to increase findability and information categorization on the U-Call’s website. After an initial validation and successful evaluation of UCAF in the field, during a trip to Uganda, additional features were incorporated, such as multiple authentication process and dynamic tagging. UCAF and its additional features was succefully delivered to the end user, as part of the  U-Call reporting system.

Abstract:
Ivor Gurney (1890-1937) was equally gifted as a poet and a composer. While a very small number of pieces of juvenilia survive, arising from his passion for and immersion in literature, he began to write poetry following his enlistment as a soldier in the First World War. In this thesis I have prepared an edition of all of Gurney’s poetry from its beginnings until the Armistice on 11 November 1918. The edition of over two hundred poems incorporates 59 poems and fragments that have not previously been published. I have sought to present this body of poetry in chronological order, and with extensive textual notes and commentary, to chart the development of poems through all stages of draft to fnal poem. This has been made possible by an unprecedented detailed analysis of all Gurney’s manuscripts and a wholesale reorganisation of that extensive collection.

Abstract:
The main goal of this project was to enhance the use and usability of Interactive Voice Response Systems (IVR) for older people. The objective of study one was to examine older people’s perceptions of the technology and identify the most common difficulties experienced by older people when interactive with IVR using focus groups. Twenty-six people aged 65 and older took part in the study. Data were analyzed using frequency and chi square analyses. The results revealed negative attitudes towards the technology. Long menus, frustration about not being able to reach an operator and absence of shortcuts were some of the most common difficulties reported by participants. Study two examined the cognitive factors predicting successful IVR interaction in four commercially available IVR systems in a sample of 185 older adults. Linear regressions were performed on the data. Results indicated that working memory and auditory memory were the best predictors of successful IVR interaction. Using the same sample of participants as study two, study three examined older adults’ attitudes towards the four IVR systems in relation to their success in interacting with the technology. The study also evaluated the impact of gender on success and attitudes towards IVR. There was a significant positive correlation between success with IVR and favorable attitudes towards the technology. No gender differences emerged in both performance on IVR tasks and attitudes towards the technology. Study four evaluated the feasibility of using a voice-activated IVR to administer and score three short neuropsychological tests using a sub sample of the original sample of 185 older adults involved in study two and three. One hundred and fifty eight participants took part in the study. Results showed high correlations between the IVR and clinician scoring of the three tests. Nevertheless, a number of discrepancies and technical issues were discovered.

Abstract:

Abstract:
In this paper, I have analyzed how the Swedish proletarian writer Ivar Lo-Johansson (1901–1990) describes venereal diseases in his novel Kungsgatan (1935). Lo-Johansson contracted gonorrhea during the early 1930s, and because of this, he felt he had a social purpose as an author to make this subject a little less taboo. He would not, however, reveal his case for anybody during this period. A significant part of this paper will be dedicated to the initial critical reception of Kungsgatan. I have tried to prove – in contrast to previous scholars, even the author himself – that the novel in the beginning wasn’t regarded as scandalous by most literary critics, nor it wasn't criticized because of its main themes: prostitution and venereal diseases. Rather, the most common opinion by critics was that the novel in general should have been shortened down heavily before publication.

Abstract:
This thesis aims to provide the thermal condition of melt pool convection by CFD simulation, which is important to the assessment of the invessel melt retention (IVR) strategy widely adopted in Generation III pressurized water reactors (PWRs). As a severe accident mitigation measure, the IVR strategy is realized through external cooling of the lower head of a reactor pressure vessel (RPV). To achieve the coolability and retention of the corium pool in the RPV lower head, the heat flux at the outer surface of the vessel should be less than the critical heat flux (CHF) of boiling around the lower head. Under such condition, the integrity of the RPV is guaranteed by the adequate thickness of the unmelted vessel wall. The thesis work starts from the selection and validation of a turbulence model in the CFD computational tool chosen (Fluent). Afterwards a numerical model is set up for estimation of melt pool heat transfer of a reference PWR with the power capacity of 1000 MWe, including a mesh sensitivity study. Based on the numerical model of a twolayer melt pool, four tasks are carried out to investigate the effects of Zr oxidation ratio, Fe content, and radiation emissivity on heat flux profiles, as well as the focus effect under extreme conditions. Selection and validation of the turbulence model are conducted by comparing the simulation results of different turbulence models with the DNS data on the convection of volumetrically heated fluid layer bounded by rigid isothermal horizontal walls at equal temperature. The internal Rayleigh numbers of the flow reach up to 10e6. The comparison shows a good agreement of the SST k-ω turbulence model results with the DNS data. The simulations with the Zr oxidation ratio of 0, 0.2 and 0.5, correspondingly, the oxide layer of 1.389m, 1.467m and 1.580m, and the metal layer of 0.705m, 0.646m and 0.561m in height, show that, the temperature of the oxide layer will increase with Zr oxidation ratio, while the temperature of the metal layer will decrease resulting in more heat transfer through the oxide layer sidewall and less top radiation. Nevertheless, the effect of the Zr oxidation ratio is not pronounced in the range of 00.5. The simulations with the Fe mass of 22t, 33t and 45t, and respective height of the metal layer of 0.462m, 0.568m and 0.646m, show that, the inner metal layer will significantly increase the temperatures of both the metal layer and the oxide layer. The percentage of heat transfer at the oxide layer sidewall will increase to supplement the reduction of that at the metal layer. The simulations with the radiation emissivity of 0.2, 0.35, 0.45 and 0.7 show that, the emissivity below 0.45 has an impact on heat transfer, and the temperatures and sidewall heat flux of both the oxide layer and the metal layer will increase with decreasing emissivity. The impact is negligible when the emissivity is above 0.45. The simulations under the hypothetically extreme conditions with either an adiabatic top boundary or a very thin metal layer show the focusing effect may occur, i.e., the heat flux through the metal sidewall is larger than that in the oxide layer. But the local high heat flux is flattened by the vessel wall with good heat conductivity. In summary, the simulations demonstrate that, except for the cases under extreme conditions, the heat fluxes of the melt pools in all other cases are significantly lower than the CHF of external cooling of the lower head. Therefore, the safety margin of the IVR strategy of the PWR chosen is seems sufficient. However, due to some limitations (e.g., simplification and assumptions) in the simulation cases and coupling of different influential factors, as indicated by the present study, the precise predictions of heat flux under all scenarios are still difficult. Therefore, the conclusions could not be generalized to the other conditions or other configurations of the molten pools. By discussing the model and simplifications/assumptions adopted in this work, the improvement directions of the numerical model and other perspectives are proposed at the end of the thesis.
