Grove, Paul Richard. "Sergei Ivanovich Taneev's "Doctrine of the Canon": A translation and commentary." Diss., The University of Arizona, 1999. http://hdl.handle.net/10150/283986.

Full text
Abstract:
Sergei Ivanovich Taneev's Doctrine of the Canon (Moscow, 1929) is the complement of Convertible Counterpoint in the Strict Style (Moscow, 1909). Both works are unique in the history of music theory due to Taneev's application of algebra for the demonstration of general laws of vertical- and horizontal-shifting counterpoint in the strict style. Together they form the cornerstone of Russian, twentieth-century contrapuntal theory. This dissertation provides a translation of Doctrine of the Canon into English, and commentary. The commentary offers a comparison of Taneev's method with those of his contemporaries, a synthesis of relevant information from Convertible Counterpoint in the Strict Style with information in Doctrine of the Canon, a discussion of political influences on the theories that developed from Doctrine of the Canon, and a summation of developments of Taneev's theories of imitative counterpoint found in the works of the Soviet music theorists Semyon Semyonovich Bogatyryov, Mark Kopytman, Evgeny Nikolaevich Korchinsky, Sergey Sergeevich Skrebkov, and Nikolay Andreevich Timofeev.

Frenette, Véronique. "A chronotopic study of Evgenii Zamiatin's Islanders." Thesis, McGill University, 1996. http://digitool.Library.McGill.CA:80/R/?func=dbin-jump-full&object_id=23721.

Full text
Abstract:
Evgenii Zamiatin's Islanders (Ostrovitiane 1917) is a novella that has largely been ignored, overshadowed by the writer's best known dystopian novel We (My 1920-21). Yet the novella reveals a wealth of themes, stylistic and linguistic innovations, that were to reach full fruition in We. Thus, it appears to be appropriate and profitable for a broadening of Zamiatin research to conduct a chronotopic analysis of Islanders, which enables a comprehensive investigation, incorporating thematic, stylistic, and linguistic facets of the novella.
Chapter One reviews Zamiatin's opposition between the urban and the natural worlds, based on M. Bakhtin's concept of the chronotope, supplemented by Iu. Lotman's category of mobility and immobility.
Chapters Two and Three will examine both worlds in turn, as embodied by their respective characters. Finally, Chapter Four will explore the characters' dynamic interaction and resulting metamorphosis. This first full-length study of Islanders hopes to bring a new focus on Zamiatin's oeuvre at large.

Ivanovic, Milena. "Exploring the authenticity of the tourist experience in culture heritage tourism in South Africa / Milena Ivanovic." Thesis, North-West University, 2011. http://hdl.handle.net/10394/7606.

Full text
Abstract:
The research question addressed by this dissertation is: How is the tourist experience formed and what constitutes the authenticity of the tourist experience for two market segments (motivated and not motivated by learning) of tourists visiting (political) cultural heritage sites in South Africa. The study explores the correlation between three types of authenticity, namely objective, constructed and existential on two independent tourist samples, motivated and not motivated by learning. This research was initiated for three reasons. The first reason forms part of the research problem; South African cultural experiences received the lowest ratings from the international tourists despite the fact that culture and heritage play a role in reimaging South Africa from Big 5 destination into ‘It’s possible’ and ‘Leave ordinary behind’. It was suspected that not all types of cultural heritage products justify such a low ratings, especially not the political cultural heritage sites South Africa is famous for. The second reason emerged from the academic literature on authenticity theories and calls from the influential group of postmodernist scholars to declare the objective authenticity obsolete and replace it with the existential authenticity. The argument that; the hyperreal nature of the postmodern experience and its detachment from reality makes the authenticity of the site redundant, seemed inapt for cultural heritage sites exclusively dependent on their historical and authentic values. The third reason was the inability of the postmodern paradigm to explain the new tourism phenomenon driven by the tourists search for selfdevelopment through authentic experiences. The new emerging paradigm, transmodernity seemed to offer better theoretical framework in explaining the omnivorouessness of tourists’ consumption and the authentic nature of tourist experiences. The correlational character of the research question required a descriptive correlational design and quantitative methodology. The selected research instrument for primary data collection is a self–administered questionnaire. The sampling strategy is a non–probability sampling, and the sampling method is a convenience or accidental sample. The data was collected from November 2010 to February 2011 at the Constitutional Hill National Heritage Site in Johannesburg. The final sample (436) consists of 254 foreign and 182 domestic tourists. The questionnaire was designed to identify the variables pertinent to each type of authenticity of tourists experience and of the resultant tourist experience. The data analysis provided very interesting results. Firstly, the results of crosstabulation proved that more than half (56%) of the tourists expressed strong agreement that the Constitution Hill provided them with authentic experience, hence a proof that political heritage sites are not responsible for the overall low experiential ratings of the country’s culture and heritage. Secondly, the results of the Spearman’s correlation coefficient proved that objective authenticity as an independent variable have strong positive correlation with constructed and existential authenticity hence a proof that objective authenticity cannot be declared obsolete and replaced with existential authenticity. Finally, the results of the t–test proved that motivation for learning and place of birth do not play an important role in how tourist evaluate and experience the authenticity of the site pointing to the omnivorous nature of tourist consumption. In line with the transmodern paradigm, motivation for learning plays a critical role in triggering the transformative, authentic experience distinctive of the existential authenticity. The results of the study also showed that 32% of tourists are in fact the purposeful, New Age, transmodern Cultural Creatives. Proposed theoretical model of authenticity of tourists experience presents a theoretical platform for future research studies.

Abstract:
Russian science has always taken a big advantage from the contribution of provincial, non professional scholars. From the beginning of the 18th century and the foundation of the Academy of Sciences, scientifical legitimacy began to spread throughout the country. Being at first strictly managed by scientists from capitals, the work of researchers led in and on the province soon started to free itself from their direct influence, and by the beginning of the 20th century, provincial learned societies (making up the kraevedenie phenomenon) turned out to be major contributors of the russian scientific landscape. The aim of this work is not only to recount the history of russian learned societies, but also to give an exact representation of the livelihood and activities of such organizations. The case study of the Kostroma scientific society (1912-1929) and the biography of its main figure, Vasilij Ivanovic Smirnov, help us observe the life of a Russian learned society from the inside. This work also leaves a large place to the description and the analysis of the activities of the kraevedy, for whom local ethnography was a relevant field of research. By the end of the 1920s, known as the « golden age » of kraevedenie, learned sociability was of first importance in Russia’s cultural life ; at the turn of the 1930’s, however, regional studies were declared totally incompatible with the Stalinist system. Soon after its attacks against the main scientific organizations of the country, the State declared war to all the provincial learned societies. This work, based on several unpublished archive materials, describes and analyses the violent attack of soviet learned sociability

Howard, Jeremy. "Nikolai Kul'bin and the Union of Youth, 1908-1914." Thesis, University of St Andrews, 1991. http://hdl.handle.net/10023/15432.

Full text
Abstract:
The first exhibition organised by Nikolai Kul'bin opened in St. Petersburg in April 1908. It marked the beginning of a new era in the history of the art of the Russian capital, and introduced many young artists to the exhibiting environment and the public. While still firmly within the symbolist tradition it was these artists who strove to renew and broaden the visual language of painting. The aim of this thesis has been to trace the developments in this process that started from fin-de-siecle symbolism and reached, via Neo-Primitivism, a climax in Cubo-Futurism. This is achieved by a survey of the composition and events surrounding Kul'bin's group "Triangle" and the art society that grew out of it, "The Union of Youth", from 1908 to 1914. As a group Triangle existed for three art seasons between 1908 and 1910. Chapters One and Two examine the growth and changes in the group in this time. The adoption of an aesthetic of "free creativity" and synaesthetic principles, the psychological impressionism of Kul'bin and Matyushin, and the association of ideas with literary symbolism are examined. The notion of art as an abstraction from nature is studied with reference to Markov's theories and the art of the Union of Youth exhibitors in Chapter Three and succeeding chapters. In addition, the originality of the establishment of the Union of Youth in the Russian context, and the overlap of ideas and artists with Triangle is discussed. The provision of this new forum for unestablished artists stimulated many developments in the visual arts, not least the progress of Neo-Primitivism, which, as seen In Chapter Four was even transferred to the theatre. The Union of Youth's production of "Khoromnyya Deistva" is seen to presage Markov's notion of "constructive" and "non-constructive" art, examined in Chapter Five, as well as the zaum transrationalism of Malevich, Matyushin and Kruchenykh in the Futurist opera The Victory over the Sun. The Union of Youth's role in creating the ambience appropriate for such ideas is analysed and in the second half of the thesis it is seen that while the group backed these modernist tendencies, most of the member-artists actually failed to be truly innovative in their own art. The dependence on developments in Munich and Paris, and the inter-relationship of these artistic centres with Petersburg are studied in the light of the retention of a mystical symbolist aspect in the art of the Petersburg avant-garde.

Butorac, Mark. "From the other oil field : Mendeleev, the West and the Russian oil industry." Thesis, McGill University, 2001. http://digitool.Library.McGill.CA:80/R/?func=dbin-jump-full&object_id=38161.

Full text
Abstract:
This thesis attempts to determine whether the Russian chemist, Dmitrii Ivanovich Mendeleev, was open to Western ideas and capital in the Russian petroleum industry. It does so by examining five of his trips to study this business, as either an advisor to the Russian government or a private consultant. These voyages took place between 1863 and 1886 and saw Mendeleev in France, the United States and the Caucasus. Each trip produced a combination of personal letters, diaries, and published articles. This work employs a mixture of published and unpublished archival documents. In the process, much is revealed about the history of this industry, its industrialists, as well as Mendeleev's personality.
The introduction outlines the general questions that this thesis aims to answer. Chapter one summarizes Mendeleev's life until he first worked in the oil industry in 1863. These formative years were crucial for Mendeleev. His youthful travels around Europe, studies in Germany and personal inclinations, made him a multi-lingual and cosmopolitan individual. The remaining five chapters examine Mendeleev's trips to study the industry. An epilogue briefly recounts his final years.
The conclusion of this thesis is that contrary to Soviet scholarship, Mendeleev was open to the West. His only requirement was that Western ideas and capital assist in the growth of the Russian oil industry and result in abundant and cheap kerosene for the Russian population.

Abstract:
It becomes clear nowadays that the speed and scale of human activity in the biosphere is more profound than the scientific knowledge of the natural processes of different ecosystems on the earth. This thesis is to reveal to the large public opinion the life and work of a russian scientist and thinker vladimir ivanovitch vernadsky (1863-1945) who spent almost 60 years of his scientific career in different fields of natural science such as mineralogy, cristallography, geochemistry, biogeochemistry, radiogeology, meteorology, history of science but also raised the questions of philosophy and sociology. Since 1916 vernadsky examins the interaction between living organisms considered as a whole and inorganic matter from the biogeochemical point of vew which allowed him to enrich the concept of the biosphere introduced in natural science by jean-baptist lamarck in 1802. This original approach of the natural processes which take place on the surface of our planet led the scientist to rethink the place and the role of human beings in the biosphere and to start in the late 30s the elaboration of the rational theory of the noosphere, a new stage in the evolution of the biospere

Abstract:
This study begins with the actor’s quest for truth. Starting from the « actor’s paradox » which shines light on the tension that plays between Form and Spontaneity, and the difficulty of being simultaneously artist and work of art. A comparative research of Occidental/Oriental theatre, and other sources such as the thoughts of George Gurdjieff and François Delsarte led us to consider the work of the actor from the point of Trinitarian view, taking into account the three essential elements that are his body, his emotion and his mind. The quest for the truth that drives the actor has to begin with the comprehension of his own nature of this human trinity; before the understanding of its fragmentation, that is, the lack of harmony that can exist between these three principle functions and the danger of falling into automatic and stereotypic behaviors and reactions. This study allows us to observe the thought of certain great theatre reformers of the 20th century. Therefore, methods of Jerzy Grotowski and Etienne Decroux are analyzed using approaches of organicity and artificiality from the perspective of Grotowski. Our objective is to find a possible complementarity between the works of these two researchers in the quest for balance of the trinity body/emotion/intellect. Finally, the actor must simultaneously cultivate the three centers in order to unify the creator, the artisan and the matter of his work, and find his true presence on stage

Abstract:
The aim of this work is to analyze Brazilian didactic books for intermediate education concerning the subject of History and Philosophy of Science (HPC) and the insertion of History of Science in the classroom within the periodic table topic. The first part of this research was the selection of chemistry books from the “Programa Nacional do Livro Didático de Ensino Médio” (PNLEM) (National Didactic Book Program for High school) and as analysis criteria it was used Niaz’s from a research carried out in Venezuela on chemistry didactic books used in Higher Education. Subsequently, that stage, a research was conducted out in classroom to assess how students perceive History of Science when it was used as a teaching strategy to improve understanding of the periodic table. From the analysis of the didactic books, it can be seen that they show information concerning history of science, however it is presented in a way that is detached from the specific content, all pieces of information found in the books are merely for illustrative purposes and are not used as a didactic resource. In the classroom it can be perceived that students show receptiveness in knowing the origin of the periodic table, but do not seem to believe that it interferes with their learning. However, it was found through questionnaires applied after the study in classroom, using the historic context of the construction of the periodic table, that students showed (more) gabbiness when studying the structure of the periodic table.

Abstract:

In June 1996, Gen. Lebed came third in the first ballot of the presidential elections that were going to lead to Boris Yeltsin's re-election. After a short period at the summit of the Russian power, Alexander Lebed became involved in a new political battle which was meant to open the Kremlin's gates to him after he first won regional political power. After Lebed's election in the Krasnoyarsk Territory, the great wealth of the region, which is the source of financial means for his future campaign for the presidency, over which people from the field of politics as well as economics were soon competing. In this struggle where everyone tried to take the lion's share, Alexander Lebed found himself in the middle of merciless wars between powerful groups run by oligarchs. Unable to seize the levers of economic power, Governor Lebed had, moreover, to face the challenge of regional nationalism. Abstract:
Although phylloid algal mounds have been studied for 50 year, much remains to be determined concerning the ecology and sedimentology of these Late Paleozoic carbonate buildups. Herein we perform a digital outcrop study of the well-known Middle Pennsylvanian Lower Ismay mound interval in the Paradox Basin because outcropping mounds along the San Juan River are cited as outcrop analogs of reservoir carbonates in the Paradox Basin oil province of Utah and adjacent states. The principal field area is the Eight Foot algal field located at river mile 19.2 on the San Juan River, approximately 14 miles SSW of Bluff, Utah. The Lower Ismay section is exposed on both sides of the river for 1.4 miles. Mechanisms for mound formation are still a heavily debated topic and even now aren't fully understood. While this study does not seek to solely answer this question, it does shed some light on the argument. A combined total station-LIDAR survey of the exposed Eight Foot mounds indicates that the mound field is comprised of 83 individual and composite mounds that have an average height of 10.9 meters and peak spacing of 48.8 meters. Further, statistical examination of survey data reveals a correlation between mound height and east-west alignment, showing that shelfward mounds were slightly taller than their more basinward counterparts.. However, other shape parameters do not appear to vary systematically across the algal field. Curve-fitting indicates that the overall mound morphology does not differ significantly from a Gaussian surface indicating that mounds are conical in shape. This suggests that mounds did not form under the influence of directional currents such as waves or tides. Yet, Ivanovia-fragment packstone and grainstone facies typical of the mound interval suggest a high-energy depositional setting.

Abstract:
The utopian society as imagined by Zamiatin in his 1921 novel we provides a good insight into the political, intellectual, artistic and literary life during the first years of soviet power. This period (1917-1921) of civil war and wartime communism saw the emergence in Russia of a bolchevik society based upon radically new principles. With remarquable awareness of these events, Zamiatin showed the deep transformation that occurred in the relationships between the state and the individual, the state and art, the state and science and religion. The first part of this work, "the state and the individual", refers to the making of the soviet state as well as the universal state in we. The second part, "the state and the art", looks into the role of a writer and the purpose of art. In the third part science is considered for its accomplishments within the bolchevik society and equally as a theory of that society. The bolchevik attitude towards religion is analysed through the writings of Lenin, Bogdanov, Lunatcharski and Gorki. These years 1917 to 1921 are essential for a proper understanding of bolchevik ideology

Full text
Abstract:
Phylloid-algal mounds form heterogeneous hydrocarbon reservoirs in the southeastern portion (Blanding sub-basin) of the Paradox Basin. Well-studied Lower Ismay mounds exposed along walls of the San Juan River gorge in the vicinity of Eight Foot Rapids, the west limb of the Raplee Anticline, and at the classic Honaker Trail locality (southwestern Paradox Basin) have often been cited as outcrop analogs of productive subsurface mounds. Until now, however, there has not been a complete description of the distribution, size, and spacing of outcropping algal mounds at the classic Eight Foot Rapids locality. The Lower Ismay sequence was analyzed in the context of a build-and-fill model of deposition. There are three facies associations within the sequence: 1) a basal lowstand to middle highstand pre-mound facies association, 2) a late highstand to middle falling stage phylloid algal-dominated relief-building facies association, and 3) a late falling stage, post-mound relief-filling facies association. Above the basal maximum flooding surface (Gothic Shale), the facies succession displays a distinct shallowing upward trend through the Lower Ismay sequence. Mound dimensions and facies stacking patterns permit evaluation of two depositional models. The first is a traditional, moderate- to low-energy model of vertical and radial mound accumulation of phylloid algal plates. The second is a high-energy, tidally influenced model of accumulation wherein mounds become hydrodynamically elongate. Outcrop data indicate that algal-dominated buildups are domal in shape with no preferred axis of elongation. These patterns do not support a hydrodynamic accumulation of loose algal plate fragments. The absence of in-situ algal thalli in all but the upper few tens of centimeters of the mounds, however, argues against a purely biological/ecological origin of mounds. A down-stepping ramp model is proposed wherein a muddy algal facies was deposited at the base of the mounds in the low energy of the outer ramp, followed by a grain-rich algal core in the mid-ramp environment. Mounds tops accumulated in an algal bafflestone facies in the inner ramp setting. Restriction of energy due to basinward algal buildup may have also contributed to deposition of algal bafflestone. Mounds accumulated radially at differential rates and were influenced by these variations in energy. This differential deposition of microfacies and subsequent diagenetic alteration have produced heterogeneities in algal reservoir rock, producing algal mound reservoirs that have a high potential for compartmentalization.

Author of polemics and originals thesis, he was member and leader of the left communist group and was against Lenin ideas many time. However, this thing was never a reason to break it other. On the contrary, these debates has a hand in rise of Lenin and Burkhárin theoretical think. Abstract:
This lecture recital seeks to prove that Sergei Taneyev's only piano concerto is a valuable addition to the piano concerto repertoire for historical and theoretical examination. Taneyev's biographical background proves he was one of the major figures in Russian musical life during the late nineteenth century. For one who had such an important role in music history, it is an unfortunate that his music has not been popular. Through letters to contemporary composers and friends, Taneyev's master teacher Tchaikovsky revealed why his music and piano concerto were not as popular as they should have been. This lecture recital examines Taneyev's compositional style and illustrates his influence in the works of his famous student Sergei Rachmaninoff through examples from Taneyev's Piano Concerto in E-flat Major and Rachmaninoff's Piano Concerto No. 2. Taneyev's Piano Concerto and Tchaikovsky's Piano Concerto No. 1 have both similarities and differences that resulted from the composers' close relationship. Letters between the teacher and student enlighten readers to the compositional process of the two piano concertos and demonstrates the value of Taneyev's Piano Concerto. A detailed theoretical analysis is included in this dissertation. The principal themes and motifs are presented with a detailed analysis of the structure of the concerto's first movement as the themes, motifs, and variations are woven into a unified piece of music. The second movement of the concerto is remarkable for its harmonic progressions. This research substantiates that Taneyev's Piano Concerto is valuable to the current piano repertoire and worthy of performances throughout the world. The concerto occupies an important role in music history and theory and is useful for piano students to study.

Abstract:

Abstract:
Contrary to a common image of the avant-garde as atheist, revolutionary, progressist, anarchist and liberal project, this thesis focus on metaphysical, religious, counter-revolutionary, anti-progressist and anti-modern aspects of the movement. René Daumal (1908-1944) and Daniil Kharms (1905-1942), a French and a Russian, are two younger representatives of two avant-gardes : French surrealism and Russian futurism. They live at the same time in different countries and don't know each other. Despite all the distance which separate them, they share similar convictions and several common sources. Metaphysical poetry, anti-modern convictions, absurd and religiosity -here is the frame of the research which help to understand the similarities between two authors who represent another image of the European avant-garde
