Abstract:
ABSTRACT In Comamonas testosteroni strain BR6020, metabolism of isovanillate (iVan; 3-hydroxy-4-methoxybenzoate), vanillate (Van; 4-hydroxy-3-methoxybenzoate), and veratrate (Ver; 3,4-dimethoxybenzoate) proceeds via protocatechuate (Pca; 3,4-dihydroxybenzoate). A 13.4-kb locus coding for the catabolic enzymes that channel the three substrates to Pca was cloned. O demethylation is mediated by the phthalate family oxygenases IvaA (converts iVan to Pca and Ver to Van) and VanA (converts Van to Pca and Ver to iVan). Reducing equivalents from NAD(P)H are transferred to the oxygenases by the class IA oxidoreductase IvaB. Studies using whole cells, cell extracts, and reverse transcriptase PCR showed that degradative activity and expression of vanA, ivaA, and ivaB are inducible. In succinate- and Pca-grown cells, there is negligible degradative activity towards Van, Ver, and iVan and little to no expression of vanA, ivaA, and ivaB. Growth on Van or Ver results in production of oxygenases with activity towards Van, Ver, and iVan and expression of vanA, ivaA, and ivaB. With iVan-grown cultures, ivaA and ivaB are expressed, and in assays with whole cells, production of the iVan oxygenase is observed, but there is little activity towards Van or Ver. In cell extracts, though, Ver metabolism is observed, which suggests that the system mediating iVan uptake in whole cells does not mediate Ver uptake.

Abstract:
Sv. Ivan Krstitelj, prethodnik i krstitelj Isusov, iznimno se štuje u kršćanstvu. Ivan Krstitelj rodio se pola godine prije Isusa. U smislu folklornih običaja u Hrvata najbogatiji su Badnjak, blagdan sv. Jurja (23. travnja) i blagdan sv. Ivana Krstitelja (24. lipnja). U hrvatskoj tradicijskoj baštini, kao i u tradicijskoj baštini drugih naroda u Europi i svijetu, uz blagdan sv. Ivana Krstitelja vezuju se razni običaji, ophodi, divinacije, vjerovanja, hodočašća, procesije, svete mise, pučka veselja, sajmovi, ivanjske pjesme, molitve. U Hrvata i uopće u Europi običaj je paljenja ivanjskih vatri u sumrak uoči blagdana sv. Ivana Krstitelja. Narod sv. Ivanu Krstitelju pjeva usmene lirske pjesme i upućuje molitve.

Abstract:
Abstract These two anthologies continue Charles Halperin’s exploration of the reign of Ivan the Terrible. The first presents nineteen essays, each focused on a question that Halperin believes needs further investigation, ranging from family relationships to state policy to cultural achievements. He discusses sources and interpretations, then suggests additional avenues for further research. The second volume analyzes Ivan’s place in Russian historical memory in light of the new openings for discussion in the post-Soviet period. Looking at popularized accounts, textbooks, and specialist research, Halperin finds a range of opinion from supporters of canonization to harsh critics of policies and methods of implementation. Part Two examines Ivan on the silver screen, focusing on Eisenstein’s classic (pre-1991 but imprinted on everyone’s memory) and Lungin’s recent portrayal of the tsar in the Oprichnina years. What it meant to be Ivan remains as contested in the public mind as it is among specialists. Throughout both volumes, a consistent thread is the continuing influence of Karamzin’s concept of the two Ivans, Ivan the Good and Ivan the Terrible. Two centuries later, Ivan the Only continues to stride over the landscape of the Russian past. Halperin’s studies point the way to new assessments of his impact.

Abstract:

Abstract:
The author presents in his proposed paper, while continuing reconstruction of the Hutsul region famous violinists “pantheon”, the creative portrait of a folk musician – the representative of Kosmach, Brustury and Shepit rural traditions (Kosiv district of Ivano-Frankivsk region) – Ivan Fedorovych Labachuk (1929-2009), whose activities lasted for more than 30 years and left an imprint in the memory of fellow musicians he had ensemble with in instrumental chapels, serving weddings, joint work, carols and other folk festivals. The image of the almost forgotten outstanding violinist appears in the context of folk musicians activities – representatives of the senior and younger generations, whose memoirs depict the personality of Ivan Labachuk as one of the brightest participants in the continuous process of Hutsul professional chapel and solo performance. The author examines in hindsight the creative way of the folk violinist relying on information about his creative biography obtained from individual musicians. These include: violinist Ivan Sokoliuk (Kovalivka village), Vasyl Harasymiuk (Prokurava village), Mykola Dumutrak (Brustury village), Ivan Isaychuk (Kosmach village), and researcher of Hutsul instrumental, in particular violin, music Ihor Matsiievsky (St. Petersburg). Ivan Labachuc, as a talented performer of violin traditional music in its style regional interpretation, took the fixed place in the hereditary chain of “violin pedigree” of the instrumental Kosmach, Brustury and Shepit rural tradition. Vasyl Vardzaruk (1858–1941) was its eldest generation representative, and Ivan Meniuk (1903–1989) – its prominent successor. It is this outstanding violinist, who in the second half of 1940s had to live with Labachuks in their house, contributed to Ivan Labachuk’s development, who, in turn, picked up and continued the tradition, becoming its outstanding expresser in 1960–1990s.

Abstract:

Abstract:

The basis of this dissertation confronts through different criteria Czech photographer Ivan Pinkava and Israeli Adi Nes. The works of both artists deal with stage photography based on direct references to well-known works in art history, biblical stories or other great stories from European culture. Part one will discuss their work within the brother context of postmodern art. Part two will talk about the formal aspects of their photographs, e.g. the character of lighting, structure of the picture. Finally the last chapter will explore the meaning and the subject-matter of their attitudes, specifically translating their photographic language in the relationship to painting, photography and cinematography.

Jedrzejewski, Franck. "Ivan Wyschnegradsky et la musique microtonale." Paris 1, 2000. http://www.theses.fr/2000PA010601.

Full text
Abstract:

Abstract:
This thesis attempts to provide a complete textual analysis of Ivan Timofeyev's Vremennik. The first three chapters establish Timofeyev's biographical data, examine the extant manuscript and review prior research. Timofeyev's biography has been restored by putting together the data from earlier biographical studies and by utilising the information hidden within the text of Vremennik. The production of the extant manuscript should be dated to the 1650s rather than the 1630s. The remaining four chapters of this dissertation deal with the elements of Vremennik which were largely ignored by other scholars. Timofeyev expressed an outlook on the state based on his "Novgorodian vision", his understanding of Novgorod's role in the development of the new Russian state. I believe that this Novgorodian element is the key to the correct interpretation of Vremennik. Timofeyev also formulated on original concept of the "ideal tsar". He perceived a monarch's legitimacy not only on his hereditary rights but also on the basis of his moral behaviour, in a way creating a moral code for a Christian monarch. He viewed the events of Smuta as a total degradation of the country and attempted to provide the solutions by developing a distinct political theory. It was based on the traditional notion of a possibility of cleansing and redemption of the whole country through an adherence to the Christian doctrine and consequently a return to the paradise of pre-Smuta days. Timofeyev recognized his own apostolic mission of revealing the truth in order to facilitate this process.

Russian State University for the Humanities, 2020. http://dx.doi.org/10.28995/2075-7182-2020-19-400-415.

Full text
Abstract:
The paper discusses valency frames of a number of Russian verbal predicates whose semantics includes speech acts and, at a cetrain step of semantic decomposition, the negation, like vozražat’ ‘object, retort’, vozmuščat’sja ‘resent, be indignant’ or izvinjat’sja ‘apologize’. It is hypothesized that the frames of such predicates include a pair of propositional valencies distinctly opposed to each other: (1) the valency of stimulus that expresses the state of events and (2) the valency of response that introduces a speech act performed by the subject as a reaction to this state of event and offering an explanation. For example, in the sentence Ivan izvinilsja, čto ne prišel na moj den’ rożdenija ‘Ivan apologized that he did not come to my birthday party’ the clause starting with čto ‘that’ represents the state of events, whilst in the sentence Ivan izvinilsja, čto ploxo sebja čuvstvoval ‘Ivan apologized that he was not feeling well’ the čto-clause introduces Ivan’s response to the stimulus (e.g. of not coming to the birthday party). It is shown that these valencies cannot be adequately described with a single semantic role of content. The authors also give a generalization of this phenomenon, comparing it to other instances of valency pairs, and suggest the existence of predicates having two valency centers.

Full text
Abstract:
Horizontality is a salient social phenomenon of the last decade. It asserts itself against hierarchies in social movements and countless other collective practices around the world. It constitutes a characteristic of an emergent sociality that demands the attention of the social sciences. The 2010s are a moment as important as “the Sixties”, a time when Ivan Illich called for the development of tools of conviviality, and horizontality may be categorized as one of them. Today’s horizontality may be related to that of populations that have been the focus of anthropologists interested in their longstanding propensity to work against the affirmation of the authority of commanding. Public squares, roundabouts, and the courtyards of apartment buildings welcome the early symptoms of democratic experimentation that circulates also among groups, collectivities, and associations with varied purposes. In all these places, equality asserts itself and cuts across differences. The Yellow Vests and an educational cooperative in São Paulo are the empirical foundation of this study.

Full text
Abstract:

Abstract:
Professor M. Zhytaryuk’s review is about a book scientific novelty – a monograph by Professor M. Tymoshyk «Ukrainian journalism in the diaspora: Great Britain. Monograph. K.: Our culture and science, 2020. 500 p. – il., Them. pok., resume English, German, Polish.». Well-known scientist and journalism critic, Professor M. S. Tymoshyk, wrote a thorough work, which, in terms of content, is a combination of a monograph, a textbook and a scientific essay. This book can be useful for both students and practicing journalists or anyone interested in the history of the Ukrainian diaspora, Ukrainian journalism and Ukrainian culture. The author dedicated his work to Stepan Yarmus from Winnipeg, Canada – archpriest, journalist, editor, professor. As the epigraph to the book were taken the words of Ivan Bagryany: «Our press, born under the sword of Damocles of repatriation», not only survived and survived to this day, but also showed a brilliant ability to grow and develop. It was shown that beggars that had come to the West without money at heart can and know how to act so organized. It was also an example of how a modern «enbolshevist» and «denationalized» by the occupier man person is capable of a combined mass action».
