Abstract:
We applied spectral techniques to the analysis of cardiorespiratory signals [instantaneous lung volume (ILV), instantaneous tidal volume (ITV), arterial O2 saturation ([Formula: see text]) at the ear, heart rate (HR), systolic (SAP), and diastolic (DAP) arterial pressure] during nonapneic periodic breathing (PB) in 29 awake chronic heart failure (CHF) patients and estimated the timing relationships between respiratory and slow cardiovascular (<0.04 Hz) oscillations. Our aim was 1) to elucidate major mechanisms involved in cardiorespiratory interactions during PB and 2) to test the hypothesis of a central vasomotor origin of PB. All cardiovascular signals were characterized by a dominant (≥84% of total power) oscillation at the frequency of PB (mean ± SE: 0.022 ± 0.0008 Hz), highly coherent (≥0.89), and delayed with respect to ITV (ITV-HR, 2.4 ± 0.72 s; ITV-SAP, 6.7 ± 0.65 s; ITV-DAP, 3.2 ± 0.61 s; P < 0.01). [Formula: see text] was highly coherent with (coherence function = 0.96 ± 0.009) and almost opposite in phase to ITV. These findings demonstrate the existence of a generalized cardiorespiratory rhythm led by the ventilatory oscillation and suggest that 1) the cyclic increase in inspiratory drive and cardiopulmonary reflexes and 2) mechanical effects of PB-induced changes in intrathoracic pressure are the more likely sources of the HR and blood pressure oscillations, respectively. The timing relationship between ITV and blood pressure signals excludes the possibility that PB represents the effect of a central vasomotor rhythm.

Abstract:
Intraspecific trait variation (ITV) enables plants to respond to global changes. However, causes for ITV, especially from biotic components such as herbivory, are not well understood. We explored whether small vertebrate herbivores (hares and geese) impact ITV of a dominant clonal plant (Elytrigia atherica) in local communities. Moreover, we looked at the relative importance of their direct (e.g., selective grazing) and indirect effects (altering genotypic richness/diversity and abiotic environment) on ITV. We used exclosures at two successional stages in a Dutch saltmarsh, where grazing pressure at the early successional stage was ca. 1.5 times higher than that of the intermediate successional stage. We measured key functional traits of E. atherica including height, aboveground biomass, flowering (flower or not), specific leaf area, and leaf dry matter content in local communities (1 m × 1 m plots) inside and outside the exclosures. We determined genotypic richness and diversity of each plant using molecular markers. We further measured abiotic variations in topography and clay thickness (a proxy for soil total nitrogen). Structural equation models revealed that small herbivores significantly promoted ITV in height and flowering at the early successional stage, while they marginally promoted ITV in height at the intermediate successional stage. Moreover, the direct effects of herbivores played a major role in promoting ITV. Small herbivores decreased genotypic diversity at the intermediate successional stage, but genotypic richness and diversity did not impact ITV. Small herbivores did not alter topographic variation and variation in clay thickness, but these variations increased ITV in all traits at the early successional stage. Small herbivores may not only impact trait means in plants as studies have shown but also their ITV.

Abstract:
ABSTRACT The characteristics of intraseasonal tropical variability (ITV) associated with the two flavors of El Niño [i.e., the canonical or eastern Pacific (EP) El Niño and the Modoki or central Pacific (CP) El Niño] are documented using composite and regression analysis. Double space–time Fourier analysis is applied to the NCEP–NCAR zonal wind at 850 hPa (U850) to separate the different components of the ITV in the tropical troposphere, which is then used to define indices of wave activity, and document the spatial pattern of the waves. It is shown that the ITV characteristics are altered during CP El Niño compared to the typical seasonal dependence of the ITV–ENSO relationship. In particular, while EP El Niño is characterized by enhanced MJO and equatorial Rossby (ER) wave activity during spring–summer prior to the ENSO peak, during CP El Niño, the ITV activity is increased during the mature and decaying phases. It is suggested that ITV is more propitious to the triggering of the EP event; while during the CP event, it contributes mostly to the persistence of positive SST anomalies. The oceanic response of these ITV anomalous patterns is further investigated in the Simple Ocean Data Assimilation (SODA) reanalysis by documenting the seasonal evolution of the intraseasonal equatorial oceanic Kelvin wave (IEKW) activity during the two flavors of El Niño. It is shown that anomalous westerlies associated with ITV may generate the corresponding response in the ocean in the form of anomalous IEKW activity.

Abstract:
Abstract Background Investigating the causes and consequences of intraspecific trait variation (ITV) in plants is not novel, as it has long been recognized that such variation shapes biotic and abiotic interactions. While evolutionary and population biology have extensively investigated ITV, only in the last 10 years has interest in ITV surged within community and comparative ecology. Scope Despite this recent interest, still lacking are thorough descriptions of ITV’s extent, the spatial and temporal structure of ITV, and stronger connections between ITV and community and ecosystem properties. Our primary aim in this review is to synthesize the recent literature and ask: (1) How extensive is intraspecific variation in traits across scales, and what underlying mechanisms drive this variation? (2) How does this variation impact higher-order ecological processes (e.g. population dynamics, community assembly, invasion, ecosystem productivity)? (3) What are the consequences of ignoring ITV and how can these be mitigated? and (4) What are the most pressing research questions, and how can current practices be modified to suit our research needs? Our secondary aim is to target diverse and underrepresented traits and plant organs, including anatomy, wood, roots, hydraulics, reproduction and secondary chemistry. In addressing these aims, we showcase papers from the Special Issue. Conclusions Plant ITV plays a key role in determining individual and population performance, species interactions, community structure and assembly, and ecosystem properties. Its extent varies widely across species, traits and environments, and it remains difficult to develop a predictive model for ITV that is broadly applicable. Systematically characterizing the sources (e.g. ontogeny, population differences) of ITV will be a vital step forward towards identifying generalities and the underlying mechanisms that shape ITV. While the use of species means to link traits to higher-order processes may be appropriate in many cases, such approaches can obscure potentially meaningful variation. We urge the reporting of individual replicates and population means in online data repositories, a greater consideration of the mechanisms that enhance and constrain ITV’s extent, and studies that span sub-disciplines.

Abstract:
Bagaza virus (BAGV) and Israel turkey meningoencephalomyelitis virus (ITV) are classified in the genus Flavivirus of the family Flaviviridae. Serologically, they are closely related, belonging to the Ntaya serocomplex. Nucleotide sequences available to date consist of several complete sequences of BAGV isolates, but only partial sequences of ITV isolates. Sequence comparisons of partial envelope (E) and NS5 regions reveal a close genetic relationship between these viruses. Despite this, BAGV and ITV are considered as separate virus species in the database of the International Committee on Taxonomy of Viruses. In this work, complete nucleotide sequences for five ITV isolates are provided, thereby permitting a phylogenetic comparison with other complete sequences of flaviviruses in the Ntaya serogroup. We conclude that BAGV and ITV are the same virus species and propose that both viruses be designated by a new unified name: Avian meningoencephalomyelitis virus.

Abstract:
Abstract. The El Niño–Southern Oscillation (ENSO) is tightly linked to the intraseasonal tropical variability (ITV) that contributes to energise the deterministic ocean dynamics during the development of El Niño. Here, the relationship between ITV and ENSO is assessed based on models from the Coupled Model Intercomparison Project (CMIP) phase 5 (CMIP5) taking into account the so-called diversity of ENSO, that is, the existence of two types of events (central Pacific versus eastern Pacific El Niño). As a first step, the models' skill in simulating ENSO diversity is assessed. The characteristics of the ITV are then documented revealing a large dispersion within an ensemble of 16 models. A total of 11 models exhibit some skill in simulating the key aspects of the ITV for ENSO: the total variance along the Equator, the seasonal cycle and the characteristics of the propagation along the Equator of the Madden–Julian oscillation (MJO) and the convectively coupled equatorial Rossby (ER) waves. Five models that account realistically for both the two types of El Niño events and ITV characteristics are used for the further analysis of seasonal ITV ∕ ENSO relationship. The results indicate a large dispersion among the models and an overall limited skill in accounting for the observed seasonal ITV ∕ ENSO relationship. Implications of our results are discussed in light of recent studies on the forcing mechanism of ENSO diversity.

The purpose of this study is to explore the characteristics of an effective State Interactive Video (ITV) program relating to teacher qualifications and strategies, student research and involvement, organization, economical benefits, and technical support. Evidence from this study suggests that ITV instructors need more organization and preparation than is typically required for face-to-face teaching in a traditional classroom and the ability of ITV instructors to adapt and learn new technology-based teaching techniques is critical for student academic success. These findings are beneficial to school administrators planning to design and implement sound ITV pedagogical and professional development programs and practices to enhance student learning.

Martin, David. "Delivery of ITV Chemistry Classes." TopSCHOLAR®, 2007. http://digitalcommons.wku.edu/theses/407.

Abstract:
Western Kentucky University (WKU) offered a course entitled Biochemistry for the Health Sciences in the spring semester of 2007. The course was taught in Interactive Television (ITV) format, and was the first time a class had been taught in the format enabling two-way communication by the Chemistry Department. One section was present in an ITV broadcast classroom on the main campus in Bowling Green, Kentucky. Another section received the broadcast on the campus of Western Kentucky University-Owensboro (WKU-O), at Owensboro Community and Technical College (OCTC), located in Owensboro, Kentucky. The purpose of this thesis is to evaluate the delivery of the chemistry class and to ascertain if ITV is a suitable format for chemistry classes. Professor Larry Byrd taught the class in person to twenty-nine students in Bowling Green. David Martin, the author of this thesis, attended the class at WKU-0 along with one student, who was required to take the class for her Health Sciences major. The thesis addresses the technical aspects of an ITV class, the logistical challenges faced at both locations, the subject matter covered, and the reactions of students. A survey was administered to the Bowling Green class and the Owensboro student was interviewed. Suggestions for improvements were made for future classes. The conclusion is that ITV can certainly be used successfully for the delivery of chemistry classes. The student in Owensboro received an "A" for the semester. This result compared to 50% "A's", 32 % "B's", 9% "C's", and 9% "D's" and "W's" for the total class. The most needed improvement for the class is the inclusion of demonstrations of laboratory experiments on video. The technical and logistical challenges encountered can be overcome with more experience on the part of the professor and improvements in the courier transportation system. This particular class is scheduled to be offered via ITV in the fall 2007 semester and will be broadcast to multiple remote locations. This limited study of an ITV chemistry class shows that the delivery method is appropriate and reasonable. To broaden the statistical base for comparison of ITV classes to traditional classes, another series of experiments should be performed. A proposal for a study between a traditional class, an ITV main campus class, an ITV remote class, and a web-based class is included. This study is designed to compare student performance over a range of delivery methods for the same course.

Abstract:
This exploratory study was designed to examine counseling skill acquisition for Rehabilitation Counseling education students enrolled in a distance education Practicum I course. The course utilized interactive television (ITV), Desire 2 Learn (D2L), a course management system, and some formalized group meetings for curriculum delivery. Students were asked to provide two audio recordings that served as pre-test and post-test measures of counseling skills. Recordings were analyzed by two evaluators. In addition to the recordings, students completed two survey instruments, an initial demographic questionnaire and a survey of attitudes towards the use of technology in the course that was completed along with the post-test recording. A comparison of pre-test and post-test means on the audio recordings revealed no significant change in counseling skills for students enrolled in this course. There was an increase in the number of empathetic responses, clarifying statements, paraphrasing, questions and closing statements on the post-test recordings but a decrease in attending responses and opening statements. Survey findings indicated that students perceived distance education to be an effective use of their time and improved the quality of course interactions. Students also reported that technology made interacting with their peers difficult and somewhat impersonal. Approximately half of the students agreed that they were comfortable with the course technology. A majority to students indicated they would have preferred a traditional approach to learning counseling skills. These findings have implications for counseling programs currently utilizing ITV or webconferencing to deliver clinical skills courses. It may have broader implications for other clinical skills training programs delivering training via other distance education modalities.

In the context of the demographic changes in Portugal, especially the increasing of the ageing population, it becomes essential to worry about offering tools to seniors that can contribute to an active life and promote their independence within a society in a constant technological evolution. The present investigation is carried out in the scope of the +TV4E project, which is under development at University of Aveiro and it aims to promote active ageing and to contribute to seniors’ wellbeing, quality of life, info-inclusion and autonomy. This project focuses on bringing updated information about social and public services to the seniors’ home televisions, in order to facilitate their access to information. The idea consists in, during the linear television broadcast, notifying users about a new piece of information about a certain social or public matter, pausing the current emission, displaying a brief informative video spot and, finally, going back to linear television broadcasting where it was paused, avoiding content loss. This platform’s goal is to minimize informational flow’s fragilities and to bring accurate information to seniors without flaws and reality distortion. The present work fits into the +TV4E project by focusing specifically on its audio-visual component. It pretends to identify, in an audio-visual point of view, the main characteristics and design guidelines for videos with informative content, taking seniors’ needs into account. This led to a creation and development process in order to reach an adequate audio-visual approach, through the validation and definition of sound and visual elements, collaborating with two senior universities in Aveiro, Portugal. Since the Portuguese senior population is the project’s target audience, students from Senior University of Cacia and Senior University of Curia were invited to participate in design sessions and contribute with their opinions and inputs in order to adjust sound elements, text elements, iconography and colour pallet.

Abstract:
The study of television advertising has three main thrusts. It is first necessary to define the parameters which permit an investigation of communication in the televised medium, as well as analyse the techniques of advertising strategy and identify the principal participants and their roles, to this 'scientific' side of television advertising should be added the complexities of audience figures and the intricacies of rate cards. Advertising is, however, also a creative process in which artistic qualities can come to the fore and achieve recognition through a variety of competitions and festivals. Finally, advertising is the mirror of a society. This analysis of television commercials gives an insight into British life and culture, and particularly enables the researcher to identify the salient features and preoccupations of British society in the period 1988 to 1992

Abstract:
The study concerns the inter-relationship between media reform and civil society in Thailand between 1995-2000. It examines case studies of two selected television organisations - the production company Watchdog and the broadcast channel Independent Television (iTV) - and analyses their internal production decision-making processes, their public affairs programs and their urban and rural audiences. Debates about civil society and media reform between 1995-2000 influenced the government's media regulation policies to the extent that more attention was paid to media freedom as intended by Articles 39, 40 and 41 in the 1997 Constitution. Non-governmental Organisations (NGOs) took an important role in monitoring government policies on media reform under the Constitution and issues about media re-regulation and ownership were canvassed, although the drawn out National Broadcasting Commission (NBC) selecting process delayed media reform. The transparency of the selection process of the NBC has been widely debated among NGOs, media scholars and media professionals. Most Thai public affairs programs in the period were shown on iTV, Channel 9 and Channel 11 and were in the minority compared with entertainment. Thai television stations normally screened entertainment programs to make profits, while they usually would not allow producers to air open debates critical of the government. Also, public affairs programs that were screened often were given inappropriate airtimes. Watchdog and iTV treated public affairs programs in different ways. Watchdog, originating from an NCO, the Creative Media Foundation, emphasized public participation in local community-oriented programs - such as Chirmsak Pinthong's Lan Ban Lan Muang - which exemplified civic journalism on television. In contrast, iTV was created in 1996 to meet the promise made in 1992 after Black May that a non-state commercial channel would be introduced. It was organised by journalists from the Nation Multimedia Company and focused on current national news issues which seldom allowed public participation. Both organisations attempted to maintain their professionalism despite political and business pressures. Chirmsak and Watchdog were accused of bias favoring the Democrat Party and often encountered program censorship. ITV staff, especially in the news department led by Suthichai Yoon and Thepchai Yong, unsuccessful fought. Shin Corps 2000-2001 takeover of the station that had been brought on by the financial problems of iTV and the Siam Commercial Bank after the economic crisis of 1997. There were three main concepts of civil society in the period 1997-2000 - Communitarianism, Self-sufficiency and Good Governance. These ideas were advanced by reformers such as Dr. Prawase Wasi and Thirayut Boonme, and were reinforced by His Majesty King Bhumibol's December 1997 Birthday Speech that endorsed the ideal of national self-sufficiency. Thai civil society debates often were involved with rural people, while the 8th National Development Plan and the Chuan government's policy on decentralisation aimed to strengthen the rural sector as an antidote to the 1997 crisis. However, the aims of civil society reformers were at times too idealistic and were viewed with skepticism by some middle class urban critics. The continuing influence of electoral corruption in rural areas also obstructed civil society ideals, while decentralisation and community development still maintained a top-down way of development and depended on government support. These difficulties in implementing pro-civil society reforms in the political process were paralleled by difficulties in developing public interest programs on Thai television. Current affairs and investigative journalism programs, such as iTV Talk, Tod Rahad and Krong Satanakarn, did not often open public discussion on the programs. Rather, the regular format of panel discussions, consisting of elites and some celebrities, tended to focus on national topics rather than local issues. The hosts of many of these public affairs programs depended on their own celebrities status and tended to invite well-known guests, whereas community-oriented programs such as Lan Ban Lan Muang and Tid Ban Tang Muang promoted civic journalism and deliberative democracy more effectively. The latter programs allowed the public to participate in the programs as the main actors and even proposed their own agendas. However, a limited study of three audience focus groups - an expert urban group, a young middle class urban group, and a rural group - found considerable scepticism about the possibility of developing public interest awareness via television programs. The expert and young middle class groups criticised both the hosts and the style of a selection of current affairs programs, which they thought were too serious and also biased. Some also considered that current affairs programs were a platform for the people in power rather than providing a space for the public. Therefore, they rarely watched them. In contrast, the rural group who participated in Lan Ban Lan Muang, believed that the program was useful for development communication. The audience gained information about other communities and used the media as the means to publicise their own community. However, they rarely watched it because the airtime of the program was the same as a popular entertainment program on Channel 3. The researcher used qualitative research methods to collect data, including indepth interviews, focus groups, participant observation, program recording and document analysis. Theoretically, the study has attempted to combine the approaches of western and Thai scholars. The main approach used to explain the relationship between the media and civil society is media and public sphere theory, as introduced by Habermas, and combined with the perspectives on media re-regulation of the Thai scholar Ubonrat Siriyusak. In terms of analysing Watchdog and iTV, the researcher used political economy perspectives to understand decision-making in both organisations. In addition, an organisational culture approach was used to explore conflicts of interest that arose in both organisations due to their different sub-cultures. Civic journalism, framing theory and development communication theory were further employed to examine the television programs and their roles in promoting the public interest and development projects, while the audience groups were considered in the context of participatory communication theory and reception theory.

Abstract:
Television underwent by many socio-technological changes since its beginning in the fifties. Beyond some inherent technological factors like the transition from black and white to color and the digitalization of both audio and video components, the consolidation of the Internet with its high level of customization of user experience and massive amount of available content, helped television to be driven towards an interactive dimension. Thus, the viewer happened to be able to enjoy from a viewing experience that can, first, be more participatory as he can, for example, vote in TV shows or express his opinion about the quality of a TV program and, second, be more personalized allowing him, for instance, receiving TV contents appropriated to his profile and context of use. However, this more participatory and customizable experience lacks of an automatic identification process of the person/s that is/are watching TV. Despite significant advances in the area of interactive television (iTV), the automatic identification of viewers, especially if a non-intrusive way is at stake, is still a research area with many unsolved topics. Elder people, in particular, are major consumers of television and represent a very sizable chunk of viewers that can benefit from the potential offered by this interactivity in many types of services. A growing number of these services are designed with the aim to promote active aging and life support, thus seniors can benefit in various aspects of their daily lives, if they use them. In this age group, the automatic identification of viewers has a special role in a personalized and targeted usage of these services, acting as an enhancer of the user experience. However, due to a broad range of physical, sensorial, cognitive and digital literacy characteristics inherent to the elderly, it was envisaged that the definition of the most suitable viewer identification technology would be dependent of the actual user/viewer profile. Actually, the user identification method can be based in several technology options, e.g. a fingerprint reader placed in the remote, a wearable tag, an RFID card, a facial or a voice recognition system, making it necessary deciding on the best approach for each possible viewer profile. The research was carried out in order to leverage the design of a decision matrix that, using the characteristics of the senior's profile, computes the most suitable viewer identification method. The methodology used to build the matrix was based on multiple sets of interviews and evaluation sessions with elderly viewers in a longitudinal prototyping process. We started with a set of exploratory interviews that allowed a better understanding how seniors see iTV technology. After, it was implemented a fully functional prototype (that allowed to test a particular set of identification technologies), that was evaluated by seniors participants, to find a clear trend about the preference of identification technologies. Despite these tests were a step forward (since they allow to understand that viewer’s characteristics can influence their preferences about the identification technology), they were not totally conclusive mainly due to the fact that they only had allowed testing a particular set of technologies among all that are referenced in this research. The aforementioned characteristics became the inputs of the decision matrix, leading to a new set of tests to start filling in its cells. These tests were based on a wizard of oz prototype that allowed participants to experiment all identification technologies referred in this research. All these tests with seniors were made at their homes preceded of the evaluation of their functional characteristics (the ones identified in previous test and that can influence viewer's preferences). The document ends reporting the main conclusions and examples of the matrix usage and with some points to next steps of this work.

Abstract:
This qualitative study explored the quality of technology associated with interactive video (ITV) classes in distance education programs and the resulting satisfaction of the instructors teaching this format. The participants were full time instructors of a rural community college that used the ITV format. Community college ITV instructors are knowledgeable about the ITV technology and are in need of research that explores the satisfaction of that technology. Distance education theory, social constructivism, individual and collaborative learning, and technology formed the foundation for the research. Grounded theory was used to generate a theory about the perceptions of the instructors. Data collected included surveys, interviews, and observations of the interviews. Data were analyzed using theoretical sampling, constant comparison, open coding, axial coding, and selective coding. Analysis indicated that instructors' perceived greater satisfaction teaching in an ITV environment when the structure of the class was optimum for the course, the audio/visual technology worked effectively, the Web-enhanced component of the course ran smoothly, IT was available, quality training was offered, and transactional distance was perceived as minimal. This grounded theory provides positive social change for other educators and administrators who teach ITV by guiding their efforts to use ITV course delivery systems in ways that ensure the fulfillment of needs for both instructors and their students.

Lu, Karyn Y. "Interaction Design Principles for Interactive Television." Thesis, Georgia Institute of Technology, 2005. http://hdl.handle.net/1853/6962.

Abstract:
Interactive television (iTV) is an umbrella term used to cover the convergence of television with digital media technologies such as computers, personal video recorders, game consoles, and mobile devices, enabling user interactivity. Increasingly, viewers are moving away from a "lean back" model of viewing to a more active "lean forward" one. When fully realized on a widespread scale in the United States, our current experience of watching television will be dramatically transformed. Because iTV is a new medium in its own right, however, standards for iTV programming and interaction in the United States remain undefined. This document identifies and articulates interaction design principles for interactive television programming in the United States. Chapter one presents a brief survey of the field as it stands in 2005. In chapters two and three, I categorize iTV by platforms and by persistent television genres, and present representative examples for each category. In chapter four, I provide an overview of existing design standards in related areas. Insights from chapters two, three, and four all serve to inform chapter five, in which I propose principles for iTV interaction design by looking closely at existing designs (both deployed and prototyped), conventions, and patterns of interaction. My analyses are rooted in visual culture and human-computer interaction design principles, and the design principles I offer are abstracted from the applications I analyze within this framework. Finally, in chapter six, I offer some conclusions and thoughts for future directions.
