Bigalke, Zachary. "“If They Can Die for Italy, They Can Play for Italy!”: Immigration, Italo-Argentine Identity, and the 1934 Italian World Cup Team." Thesis, University of Oregon, 2017. http://hdl.handle.net/1794/22654.

Abstract:
In 1934, four Argentine-born soccer players participated for the Italian team that won the FIFA World Cup on home soil. As children born to parents who participated in a wave of Italian immigrants that helped reshape Argentine society in the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries, these four players were part of a larger trend where over one hundred Argentine soccer players of Italian descent were signed by Italian clubs in the late 1920s and through the 1930s. This thesis examines the liminal space between Italian and Argentine identity within the broader context of diaspora formation in Argentina through a look at these four exemplars of the transatlantic talent shift. Utilizing sources that include Italian and Argentinian newspapers and magazines, national federation documents, and census and parish records, the thesis reveals the fluidity and temporality of national identity among Italo-Argentine immigrant offspring during the early twentieth century.

Abstract:
This paper investigates how professionals within the Italian fashion industrycollaborate and communicate to develop the nation brand Made in Italy. Theproblem of brand confusion, which occurs when the different parties within anation does not cooperate towards a distinct brand message, is analysed.Based on a theoretical review of previous studies in nation branding, interviews and observations in the area of Florence and a desk study ofscientific papers, articles and literature, the model “The Nation Brand Tree”was developed. This was applied to the case of Made in Italy. Conclusions: Thecertification “100% Made in Italy” was proven to be an ineffective solution ofsaving the Italian heritage of craftsmanship and quality. The Italian nationbrand is currently being preserved by private investors, but there is a need forincreased governmental support to create a stronger and unified nation brandfor Made in Italy.

Carabotta, Laura. "Fiscal Forecasting in Italy." Doctoral thesis, Universitat de Barcelona, 2015. http://hdl.handle.net/10803/301770.

Full text
Abstract:
The thesis “Fiscal forecasting in Italy” is comprised of three main chapters in which is analyzed, from an empirical point of view, several issues related to public finance forecasts, with an application to Italy. Chapter II, “Accuracy of fiscal forecasts in Italy” is focused on one of the most important aspects of the new Treaty: it requires that the decisions and recommendations taken by the European Commission are no longer be based on outcomes but on forecasts. In this chapter, I evaluate whether fiscal forecasts for Italy are accurate and econometrically efficient. I focus on a large number of deficit forecasts for Italy that come from a variety of sources, including both public and private agencies as well as Italian and international institutions. I analyse the extent of the discrepancies between the yearly released deficit on GDP and its forecast in Italy from 1/1992 to 12/2011. I conduct two types of analysis. In the quantitative analysis, I carry out different accuracy tests to detect which organization is the best forecaster and in what part of the year better results are published. I also compare forecasters’ performance against a naïve benchmark model, which provides a minimum level of accuracy. In the qualitative analysis, I consider the quality of the forecasts and I test efficiency, unbiasedness and serial correlations. I conclude that all fiscal forecasters for Italy provide unbiased and inefficient forecasts. In general, forecast errors do not persist in a regular way. The most relevant result of this analysis is that private forecasters are frequently more accurate than national and international ones. In Chapter III, “Combine to compete: improving fiscal forecast accuracy over time”, take advantage of the information contained in all individual budget forecasts analysed in the previous chapter to improve their accuracy. I do this by projecting combined forecasts through pooling the judgment and expertise of the forecasters. Following this idea of improving the forecasting accuracy, I apply a variety of combination techniques, both simple and advanced, which account for past forecasting performance, to compute a combined forecast. I look at a same dataset which is analysed in the previous Chapter. My main finding is that different combinations of budget forecasts often result in more accurate forecasts than individual models. This is particularly the case for a weighted forecast combination and Rbest that value the forecasts that have been more accurate in recent periods. Standard tests of forecasting accuracy show that even one year ahead, some of the pooled forecasts significantly outperform a naïve model. I use recently developed fluctuation tests to check forecasting accuracy over time I find that the weighted forecast combinations outperforms other predictors overall years. Its improvement in accuracy is statistically significant when compared to a naïve model. Chapter IV, “Nowcasting public finance in Italy,” moves from the idea of forecast and combination of annual data to the most recent idea of nowcasting fiscal variables. The reason is to give policy makers the capacity for dynamic monitoring of the public budget’s cash flow. This monthly analysis exploits the information at higher frequencies before the official figure becomes available. The approach that I use consists of using different nowcasting techniques that are well known in the literature. In particular, I propose a set of models that are parsimonious and suitable for real-time monitoring of the fiscal deficit. I conclude that the linear regression models outperform the other techniques used. The introduction of public finance and economic confidence variables and Google trends results in performance gains when compared with the VAR, the time series and autoregressive models.

Innocenti, Paola. "Chemical abortion in Italy." Thesis, University of Exeter, 2013. http://hdl.handle.net/10871/11762.

Full text
Abstract:
In Italy, the “traditional” form of family revaluated by fascist dogma is one of the pillars of the society. Women have a central role to maintain, protect and support this form of family. Many Italian women, the State, the media and the Church, all act to safeguard this reality, seeking to remove all obstacles that can challenge the family. Abortion is considered as one of these obstacles and it has been a much debated topic in Italy over the years. Abortion was made legal in Italy in 1978 with a widely discussed law. The Italian Abortion Act, despite being the object of debates, critics and two referenda supported by all Parliamentary factions, has never been modified. In 2002, with the introduction of RU 486 at the Sant’Anna of Turin all debates about abortion started up again accompanied by a strong opposition to the implementation of the drug. The purpose of this study is to better understand the social definition of the female condition in Italy analysing the obstacles to the implementation of chemical abortion in Italy. In order to evaluate the role of both the Italian Government and society in obstructing the introduction of RU 486 in Italy, historical and secondary sociological data were collected and a series of interviews and a participant observation in a selection of Italian hospitals were conducted. A comparative study between Italy and the UK was also conducted. The results of this study seem to prove how the majority of Italian women, in opposition to feminist theory, prioritize family, femininity and maternity, considering career as necessary mainly from an economic point of view. Abortion is now considered by the young generation as something avoidable and no longer associated with women’s right to choose or as an expression of “self-determination”. This strong “traditionalistic” attitude seems to be caused by the inability of the Italian State to implement its laws and by the direct and indirect influence of the Catholic Church.

Prevedi, Andrea. "Energy Communities in Italy." Master's thesis, Alma Mater Studiorum - Università di Bologna, 2020. http://amslaurea.unibo.it/21973/.

Full text
Abstract:
Citizens are expected to have a great role in the future global energy transition toward a low-carbon economy and climate neutrality. The creation of energy communities can empower citizens, who become prosumers, providing flexibility and ancillary services, reducing losses and grid investment deferral. It also brings environmental and social benefits, activating virtuous circles in the local economy. The purpose of this work is to analyze the current regulatory framework energy community; a deeper analysis is performed on renewable energy community whose regulation has been already transposed in the Italian regulation. Moreover, a realistic business-case is presented in order to verify the feasibility of a renewable energy community and a collective self-consumption schemes in the CAAB-FICO area. The final part of the work seeks to present an overview of the possible future perspectives regarding energy community and their possible contribution to smart-cities development. Particular attention has been given to the role of the energy management system in an energy community and a how it can be designed to improve the community’s energy efficiency through the implementation of production and load forecasts.

Favero, Claudia. "Developing digital historians in Italy." Thesis, Open University, 2014. http://oro.open.ac.uk/44504/.

Full text
Abstract:
This study concerns the experiences of Italian digital historians and their implications for historical scholarship. The present and future of the profession of historian, in academia and outside it, are inextricably linked to the digital revolution that is pervading society. How historians face the challenges and take advantage of the affordances of technology will have a strong impact on teaching and researching history in the future. However, the voice of digital historians on these issues does not emerge systematically from the literature. This research uses grounded theory methodology to delineate a theory of being a digital historian in Italy, a country with a rich historiographical tradition and widespread interest in history, but a weak connection with technology in scholarly endeavours. Based on in-depth interviews with digital historians, the analysis presented here highlights their initiatives, evaluations and strategies, in relation to all aspects of scholarship but particularly the education of future historians. This research is motivated and informed by my professional experience as lecturer in digital methodologies for historical research. The emerging theory revolves around the concept of developing digital history: Italian digital historians are pioneers, animated by passion and desire to innovate but working in a challenging, largely unsupportive environment where their initiatives have not translated well into educational provision for future digital historians or, more generally, to provide students with tools and methodology for historiography in the digital age. Through an illuminative comparison with interviews conducted with digital historians in the United Kingdom, differences and similarities are analysed, with a view to creating a general theory of being a digital historian and its implications for the future of scholarship in history.

Vollono, Giulia. "Constructing identity in Lombard Italy." Thesis, University of Sheffield, 2017. http://etheses.whiterose.ac.uk/17663/.

Full text
Abstract:
This thesis addresses the process of identity construction in Lombard Italy through an examination of the expression of gender, an aspect often neglected in Lombard archaeology, which has tended to focus on issues surrounding migration and ethnicity. The main evidence considered are the grave good assemblages (1639 objects recorded from 347 furnished graves) found in sixteen Lombard-period cemeteries distributed across northern Italy and Tuscany. Methodologies for studying gender in Early Medieval cemeteries elsewhere in Europe have been adopted and adapted, including multivariate statistics, and the analysis has been also supported by information obtained from the written and iconographic sources. Through an integrated perspective that allows us to observe both the general trends and (as importantly) their variations, I show that beyond the well-known association between masculinity/weapons and femininity/jewellery gender discourse was a complex phenomenon, deeply intertwined with other facets of identity, and with local concerns and traditions.

STACCHINI, MASSIMILIANO. "Essays on banking in Italy." Doctoral thesis, Università degli Studi di Roma "Tor Vergata", 2008. http://hdl.handle.net/2108/729.

Full text
Abstract:
Il secondo lavoro (What’s risk got to do with it ? Nel terzo lavoro (Why is the volume of bank loans low in some countries and high in others?
The work ‘Essays on Banking in Italy’ consists of three studies conducted in the period 2005-2008. The first and the second study investigate pricing behaviour of banks on loans granted to private sector, i.e. to firms (The Monitoring and certification effects of bankers on industrial boards) and to households (What’s risk got to do with it ? An analysis of interest rates in the Italian consumer credit market) while the third study (Why is the volume of bank loans low in some countries and high in others? The role of government debt) deals with the determinants of the size of business activity in developed countries. In the first research, a database collecting information on board’s composition of a very large number of firms (those registered at the Chamber of Commerce) was matched with other three sources of data, including the Central Credit Register, for the first time to the best of my knowledge. Such a matching allowed us to identify and study effects of bank representation on corporate board, and to discriminate between a beneficial monitoring activity as well as, alternatively, a costly conflict of interest. Our analysis shows that interest rates loans from the bank with a director who is also a director of the borrowing firm are not significantly lower than those charged by other banks. Therefore, we do not find evidence of a conflict of interest effect. In the second research we investigate the determinants of the price of consumer lending in Italy. The results suggest that concentration level exerted a significant influence on pricing conditions while the evidence on the role of risk is less clear. According to results from a quintile regression approach, we may track down a standard relationship between risk and prices only as for the lowest quintiles of the interest rate distribution. As far as interest rates applied by banks above the median prices are concerned, cost of lending seems to be less sensitive to risk. In the third paper we look at the determinants of the size of banking markets in developed countries. The novelty of the paper is to shed a light on the negative linkages between government securities issuance and the amount of credit granted by banks to private sector. We find a crowding–out effect that we interpret as an outcome of financial repression. As well as Italy is concerned, restrictions to financial activity operated through credit ceilings and branch restrictions may have shrunk bank supply of financing to private sector, on the one hand, and artificially channelled bank resources to domestic assets such as the public debt, on the other hand.

Abstract:

Pedaliu, Effie G. H. "Britain, Italy and the early Cold War : aspects of British foreign policy towards Italy, 1946-1949." Thesis, London School of Economics and Political Science (University of London), 1999. http://etheses.lse.ac.uk/1525/.

Full text
Abstract:
This thesis examines political and military aspects of British policy towards Italy during 1946-1949. It focuses on five major areas: the punishment of Italian war criminality, the reconstruction of the Italian Armed forces, the role of Italy in British plans for European cooperation, British involvement in the Italian election of April 1948 and Italy's inclusion into NATO. It analyses the factors that influenced the evolution of British policy such as pressures from the emerging Cold War, Britain's diminished power in the region and its desire to remain a major international player in the post WWII world. It evaluates the impact that Italian domestic politics and Italian realities had on the conception and execution of British policy. It reveals that British policy towards Italy was governed not only by British power politics, the desire to frustrate the designs of the Soviet Union and the Italian Communists, and the challenge of growing US influence in Italy but also by moral and ideological underpinnings such as the desire to secure the punishment of some of the worst Italian war criminals and the aspiration, as manifested by British intervention in the Italian election of 1948, to provide Italy with a form of government which was a social democratic anti-Communist alternative to the American form based on an undiluted capitalism. British policy during this period had intended to include Italy in any British plans for European cooperation when the time was right. Its resistance to Italian inclusion into NATO stemmed primarily from pragmatism rather than any persisting punitive attitudes towards a defeated opponent. British foreign policy towards Italy did not achieve all its aims but it cannot, even remotely, be described as a failure. Italy remained firmly anchored in the Western bloc, the seeds of social democracy were nurtured, disengagement was managed in an orderly and successful manner and the British stance over Italo-Yugoslav relations succeeded in neutralising potential dangers to Italy by helping to expose Stalin in the eyes of the Yugoslavs.

Abstract:
The research has affirmed the value of archives among other cultural objects because archives are a vital part of the national identity, but not just that. In fact, the good management of the res publica and an efficient administration pass through the proper documents conservation as the life source of government bodies. Starting from an archival perspective, the research object points to archives as institutions and offices of Public Administration rather than the peculiarity of the documentation which they preserve. Therefore, the analysis is focused on the internal organisational structures where the two souls of archives - one administrative and one cultural - came to light. In this sense, archives are a point of intersection of multiple issues for their intrinsic nature. The work is based on a literature review in order to contextualise Italian archives in the international scenario. The comparative analysis focused especially on the UK reality and the consecutive case study performed in Tuscany allowed the definition of the paths should be covered in order to improve national government archives. The research allowed the possibility to improve the management of archival structures starting from the strength of the national system, as the presence of a legislation with a good basis on the archival theory. In this context, the archive director emerged as the figure able to synthesise the archival knowledge and the managerial skills, aware of the necessity to coordinate multiple professional background and technological resources. This figure is the one who can put in practice the optimisation of what is defined as the archive management starting from the deep knowledge of the ongoing reality and thanks to the cooperation with the Superintendencies. In the light of above, a conclusion is the announcement of the need to design a plan of continuing professional development in archive management for administrative staff as well as for legislators, accepting the dynamicity of current scenarios and with the goal to improve national government archives.

MARTIN, SANCHEZ LUIS ANTONIO. "Producing Italy. Territori della nuova produzione." Doctoral thesis, Università IUAV di Venezia, 2020. http://hdl.handle.net/11578/286345.

Full text
Abstract:
Che adeguamenti chiede all’azione pubblica.

Abstract:
The present thesis focuses on the issue of domestic violence, describing the phenomenon from an historical, statistical and legislative point of view. In particular, after an introduction of the history and specific measures adopted to fight the issue worldwide, such as the CEDAW and DEVAW Conventions, the Beijing Conference and the Istanbul Convention, and the analysis of the related statistics of IPV (Intimate Partner Violence) and domestic homicide, the study focuses on the related legislation of China and Italy, underlining the laws of the two countries, starting from the first Marriage Law of the RPC to the last Law 69/2019 adopted in 2019 by the Italian government. The final aim is to provide the reader with the right instruments to understand and critically analyse the situation in both countries caused by the phenomenon.

Abstract:
This thesis is an attempt to contribute to Italian literature on health economics in causal framework. Despite the increasing awareness of ruling class that is time to enforce the National Health System to achieve higher efficiency levels and to make the public system bearable, there are few contributions in scientific literature that study Italian context, maybe due to scarce availability of data. This thesis deals with two big concerns for public regulators: cost-containment policies and waiting times for elective surgeries. The first part regards cost-containment policies and the introduction of unified authorities responsible for purchases of goods and provision of services at local level. The aim of the first part is to measure the efficacy of these new authorities in terms of costs reduction. The straightforward policy implication is that if the unification of local health authorities can help administrations to perform scale economies, this would be a successful stimulus to other administrations to adopt the same hint and therefore create a virtuous cycle. The second chapter refers to waiting times for elective surgeries, especially their relation with the combination of capacity constraints, demand for and supply of elective treatments. From a policy perspective, it is critical to establish the extent to which demand and supply respond to waiting time. For example, if demand is highly elastic, an exogenous increase in supply will only have minimal effect in reducing waiting times. In turn, this will make policymakers more reluctant to fund additional resources. Similarly, if supply is elastic, an exogenous increase in demand will imply that waiting time will increase only to a small extent. In both chapters we use public and free administrative data and widely known econometric approaches (Instrumental Variable regression and Synthetic Control) to try to establish causal relations between important factors in healthcare sector and try to fill the gap between literature on Italian health care sector and scientific production concerning other OECD and European Countries. Our findings are emerging at a sufficient extent, especially given the fact that we are not aware of many other studies that use administrative data in Italian context and quality of data is not always satisfying, even if increasing.

Dalla, Riva Martina. "Lithic technology and social agency in late Neolithic northern Italy : knapping flint at Rocca di Rivoli (Verona, Italy)." Thesis, University of Birmingham, 2017. http://etheses.bham.ac.uk//id/eprint/7550/.

Full text
Abstract:
The thesis explores the relationship between late Neolithic knappers and flint resources at the settlement of Rocca di Rivoli (Verona, Italy), a key site for the understanding of the late Neolithic in northern Italy. Approximately 8000 flint artefacts were recorded by means of an attribute-based relational database and subsequently analysed. The use of the \(chaîne\) \(opératoire\) method, combined with a social agency approach, provided a useful framework within which to discuss topics such as tradition, style and specialization in the context of the late Neolithic of northern Italy. The intrinsic nature of the site, characterized by secondary deposition in pits, challenged the potential retrieval of data and subsequent interpretation and resulted in the identification of fragmented \(chaînes\) \(opératoires\). In addition, the poor conservation of the finds and bias in accessibility procedures to the collection limited the choice of analytical methods available. Nonetheless, significant results were obtained. At Rocca di Rivoli there were clear preferences in terms of raw material: flint coming from the Maiolica outcrops was by far the preferred variety to be working with. It is suggested that raw material procurement possibly took place in different ways, but that a more precise identification in terms of its organization is not possible at this stage. The 16 \(chaînes\) \(opératoires\) identified at Rocca di Rivoli represent basic frameworks allowing for endless variations and additions taking place during the unfolding of flint knapping activity. It is argued throughout the present work that knapping was undertaken by both expert and non-expert knappers, including apprentices. Some aspects characterising the practice of flint knapping changed throughout occupation of the sire, possibly pointing at changes in social dynamics affecting the community of Rocca di Rivoli.

Abstract:
One of the concerns of the current study is to analyse empirically and theoretically the economic and political causes of irregular migration to Italy in order to proceed with the critical estimation of the national, international and partly supranational migration policies. Since several theories will be applied during the study it will enable me to fully describe the phenomena of the irregular migration and modern enslavement of the irregular immigrants on Italian territory. I will disregard the fact that each theory is criticised on the grounds of being too concentrated on a few aspects of the phenomena and lacking the focus on all of its aspects due to the fact that the joint use of several theories provides a broader outlook. However, one crucial critique will be taken into closer consideration. Thus, the closer study of the phenomenon of modern slavery, strongly interconnected with the irregularity of migration, the duality of the Italian economy and the restrictive migration policies will bring together both the political and economic approaches to migration, whose split appears as the central critique for a great number of IR theories.12 In the normative part of the study I will focus on the critical analysis of the criminal status of the irregular immigrants assigned to them by the Italian migration policies and the Schengen Treaty of the EU in order to prove that instead of a criminal status, a victim status should be given to all immigrants, regardless of whether they were trafficked into Italian territory or crossed the border on their own free will. Additionally, in the normative part of the thesis I will compare and analyse scholars’ previous findings related to the possible amendments to the existing policies and propose my own conclusions and suggestions of how the laws, policies and governmental focuses “ought to be” changed.

Abstract:
Documentary studies, and Italian documentary studies in particular, is a fairly young academic discipline. My research ventures in this somewhat uncharted territory with a multidisciplinary approach and in pursuit of a twofold objective: firstly to produce a brief account and a literature review concerning the major directors, movements, and theoretical trends in and about Italian documentary from the end of the Second World War to the present, which are not available in English; secondly to explore the debates about the definition of the documentary form, with a special focus on British and North-American scholars, and propose a solution to some contentious issues. The latter part of the research combines a philosophical approach that mainly draws on the works of Jürgen Habermas, Don Ihde and Kendall L. Walton, and a sociological methodology influenced by Mary Douglas and Basil Bernstein's theories; it is based on the hypothesis that documentary is not just a series of images and sounds, in whatever format the available technology provides us with, but an institution; to look at documentary as an institution means to define its features as a routinized cultural behaviour in the social context where it develops. Insofar as documentary is an institution, individual documentaries can be considered cultural artifacts that express in fairly accessible ways subjective meanings that are then internalized and influence people in their constant process of creation and recreation of social contexts. Thus, in the last part of the dissertation, I focus on the concrete instances through which the institution of documentary becomes part of the socio-cognitive contexts of individuals. I identify four documentary types, characterized by the different weighting of a set of variables dependent on the ethical, cognitive and stylistic features of the institution of documentary that I have previously described. I then match these types with the group/grid categories of a neo-Durkheimian theoretical framework to obtain a set of conceptual tools which are put to a preliminary test through the analysis of a recent Italian documentary.

Abstract:
The purpose of this research is to investigate the determinants of local labour growth in Italian Local labour Systems (LLSs) over the period 1991-2001. Employing a Glaeser et al. (1992) modelling framework we try to assess whether knowledge spills over between firms within the same sector or between firms in different sectors, what is the role of competition as well as introducing new potential determinants of local growth. Our research is also interested in testing the sensitivity of the model to different model specifications, the inclusion of new variables, different levels of sectoral aggregation, and different estimation methods. In particular, in our analysis we propose an innovative estimation technique based on mixed models, which allows exploiting the information coming from our two cross-sectional dimensions, areas and sectors, using both fixed and random effects.

Full text
Abstract:
The aim of this work is to investigate the importance of Italy, as a real and imaginary country, in British Romanticism, particularly in women's writings. Since the heyday of the Grand Tour, Italy has been approached as an alien and distant country, but also as a liberating and stimulating reality. Italy as an 'other country' constitutes an important element in the delineation of British Romanticism. The opposition between North and South, which was developed and consolidated by Romantic authors, constitutes the theoretical frame for this work. As part of southern Europe, Italy stands in opposition to Northern societies. North and South, however, are not simply in opposition; they merge and interconnect in the literary production of the time. Italy and Great Britain exemplify the dialogical connection between apparently irreconcilable opposites. In women's writings, Italy is exploited as an alternative imaginary setting onto which they can project their anxieties, their artistic ambitions and their dreams of literary success. The role of Italy in women's writings is important to demonstrate their participation in contemporary social, national and political issues. The work focuses first on travel reports and the real encounter with Italy. Then it analyses the imaginary figurations of Italy in Gothic literature and in poetry at the end of the eighteenth century. With the beginning of the nineteenth century, the idea of Italy as a morally liberating and artistically stimulating country is consolidated in the works of Stael and Byron. The representation of Italy as an ideal country for women artists makes their support of the Italian fight for independence particularly important. Since Italy represents a feminised and politically enslaved country, women associate its effort to gain freedom with their own struggle for political and social emancipation.
