Abstract:
The purpose of the paper is to reveal and demonstrate the importance of accounting in everyday life and particularly in the most adverse conditions of life, through the investigation of the diary of a Prisoner of War (P.O.W.). The author of the diary is a young individual who was an ex- WWII captive and consequently refugee in a concentration camp in Italy, in 1945, with elementary education but absolutely “illiterate” in accounting and economics issues. The handwritten diary of the P.O.W. is the core research evidence used, along with the existing literature regarding accounting in everyday life, including accounting histories of war. Additionally, the study draws on new research firmly embedded in everyday transactions. The detailed analysis of the diary reveals the contribution of improvised and self-taught bookkeeping, to the strengthening of the feeling of survival, the acquisition of the necessary and most asset, the achievement of the insatiable desire of repatriation and finally the acceptance of the patent defect caused from an impairment, through foresight to deal with it. The fulfillment of all the mentioned above aspiration supports that basic accounting knowledge, deriving from the needs of the individual according to specific circumstances of time and place, may be more than satisfied to record simple daily transactions, even by illiterate people. Abstract:
In 1941—1945. The inviolability of the Far Eastern borders with limited human resources, a poorly developed system of communication links and a lack of financial resources was maintained using the country's socio-political and military-economic capabilities. The demographic situation determined the mobilization capabilities of the region, the imbalance between the number of urban and rural residents, the personnel potential of military-industrial and civilian enterprises has increased, the problem of labor resources has become aggravated. The deployment of a military contingent in the Far East was, on the one hand, an incentive for the development of life-supporting industries, and on the other, an additional burden for limited regional resources. The introduction of a rationed supply of food and basic necessities to the population guaranteed a minimum of material benefits for the majority of the population. In the most difficult conditions, it was possible to preserve the social infrastructure at a level that ensures the reproduction of the labor force. The movement “Everything for the front, everything for the victory!” became a symbol of Soviet patriotism, citizenship and sacrifice. The war of the Soviet Union against Japan received the support of the world community. The Tokyo and Khabarovsk military tribunals established that the main Japanese criminals violated international law, treaties and agreements, unleashing aggressive wars against other countries, and committed a grave crime against humanity. The signed international agreements provided not only for the defeat of fascist Germany, Italy, militarist Japan and their allies, but also for the preservation of peace and the settlement of contradictions. The commonality of goals, the just nature of the war helped the Soviet people endure an incredibly difficult and prolonged test and win the Great Patriotic War, and bring the end of World War II closer.

Abstract:
The origin of the civil war is a central theme in the history of Spain in the 20th century and has given rise to intense debates. In the author's opinion, it was the result of the combination of structural conditions (economic and social underdevelopment, accelerated modernization pro-cess, resistance to it), all necessary, but not sufficient. The latter were determined by two factors: the existence of a conspiracy against the Spanish Republic since its very advent in 1931 and the inability of the republican governments to effectively cut it off in 1936. They did not know how to do so despite all the measures adopted but, at the same time Dessert, they could not either because from the first years of his life his monarchical adversaries had the help of fascist Italy. This was gradually materializing until an agreement was reached in March 1934, well known, but also very disfigured. It was the unequivocal signal that Mussolini was willing to curtail the republican experience in Spain in order to establish fascist influence in the western Mediterranean. The unequivocal signal was given in October 1935, in parallel with the in-vasion of Abyssinia. In June 1936, after victory, he turned again to Spain. His commitment materialized in contracts for the supply of war material, for a short war, on July 1 of the same year. The author has uncovered one of the most disfigured enigmas of the origin of the civil war.

Abstract:
Iberis sempervirens (candytuft) is an ornamental plant that thrives in cool conditions, and its growth as a potted plant has been increasing in Liguria (northern Italy). In the spring of 2004, extensive chlorosis was observed on 10-month-old potted plants of I. sempervirens grown in a plastichouse on a commercial farm near Albenga in northern Italy. Initial symptoms included stem necrosis at the soil level and darkening of leaves. As stem and foliar necrosis progressed, infected plants wilted and died. Wilt occurred within a few days on young plants, characterized by the presence of soft, watery tissues, particularly on affected leaves. Symptomatic plants were found on many farms, with an average disease incidence of 5 to 10%. Necrotic tissues became covered with a whitish mycelium that produced dark sclerotia. The diseased stem tissue was surface sterilized for 1 min in 1% NaOCl and plated on potato dextrose agar (PDA) amended with 100 ppm of streptomycin sulfate. Sclerotinia sclerotiorum (Lib.) de Bary (1) was consistently recovered from infected stem pieces. Sclerotia observed on infected plants measured 1.4 to 3.2 × 2.1 to 4.1 mm (average 2.1 to 2.7 mm). Sclerotia produced on PDA measured 1.2 to 4.2 × 1.4 to 6.1 mm (average 2.5 to 3.1 mm). Pathogenicity of three isolates obtained from infected plants and used in a mixture was confirmed by inoculating 10 single-potted 120-day-old plants grown in 18-cm diameter pots maintained outside under shade. Inoculum that consisted of 1 cm2 of mycelium excised from a 10-day-old PDA culture plate of each isolate was placed on the soil surface around the base of each plant. Ten noninoculated plants served as control. The inoculation trial was repeated once. All plants were kept at temperatures ranging between 8 and 17°C (average 12.5°C) and watered as needed. All inoculated plants developed symptoms of leaf yellowing within 18 days, soon followed by the appearance of white mycelium and sclerotia, and then eventual wilt. Control plants remained symptomless. S. sclerotiorum was reisolated from the stems of inoculated plants. S. sclerotiorum has been previously reported only on I. umbellata (2). To our knowledge, this is the first report of white mold on I. sempervirens in Italy as well as worldwide. Abstract:
The study presents a didactic experience for the deep refurbishment and the revitalization of the San Siro neighborhood in Milan (Italy). The public housing is a significative example of the 20th-century architecture (also named “Italian Modernism of Architecture”), designed by the Italian architects—Franco Albini, Renato Camus, Giancarlo Palanti, and Laslo Kovacs (1938–1941). Nowadays, it is a multicultural area, characterized by the presence of a fragile population, with strong socio-spatial inequalities, intercultural and intergenerational conflicts. Here, an architectural design project is realized, experimenting with innovative and up-to-date design solutions. This experience develops a sensitive awareness of the multidimensional complexity of the environmentally responsible design, which requires a critical balance among different disciplines and skills. The reusing of existing buildings has sustainable importance for preventing new land-uses and for saving the potential energy consumption related to the construction process. Only a widespread knowledge of the local socio-economic conditions through participatory actions permits the selection of appropriate retrofit solutions, considering also the high cultural, social, and economic values. Functional and social mix, space flexibility, green design, renewable energies, circular economy criteria, and continuative maintenance are the correct strategies for boosting the social revitalization and for improving fairness, safety, architectural quality, human comfort, energy efficiency, and sustainability in this public housing neighborhood.

AbstractIntroduction:Epidemiological research about disasters is difficult to perform. Most often, it must be completed retrospectively, since data collection may not be feasible or possible during the disaster.Now, there is a recognized need for a standard method to assess the severity of a disaster.Objectives:The aim of this paper is to assess the severity of the disasters that occurred in Italy during the 20th century, using a Disaster Severity Scale (DSS). Another goal is to find a standard method for the classification of previous disasters, test the feasibility and reliability of the use of the Disaster Severity Scale, and improvedisaster management and planning.Methods:Data were obtained from formal reports of the Civil Defence Unit (Italy) and were used to calculate the Disaster Severity Scale score. Disasters were classified into major and minor disasters, according tothe numbers of deaths and severity of the damage. The number of deaths was compared with the obtained Disaster Severity Scale score. A seasonal trend for different types of events was obtained to assess if there is a relationship between the type of event and the time of the year in which it occurred, as related to the weather conditions existing at that time.Results:There were enough data to calculate a Disaster Severity Scale score for 26 major events that caused death and economic damage, and occurred in Italy between 18 March 1944 and 11 November 1999, and for 82 minor events, that occurred between October 1982 and December 1999. There were some significant peaks varying from different types of events during particular seasons, but the cause for those with the highest incidence is not clear. Events related to natural hazards were the only type of event that reached the highest Disaster Severity Scale when considering the number of deaths, while no events associated with man-made hazards had a Disaster Severity Scale score >8.Conclusion:The Disaster Severity Scale score could be a reliable index for the assessment of events related to either natural or man-made disasters. Use of the Disaster Severity Scale allows researchers to classify previous hazards by scoring each disaster's severity. Further studies in other countries could be useful to further validate the Disaster Severity Scale.

Abstract:
Avocado (Persea americana Mill.) is grown in some areas of southern Italy. In spring 2011, a previously unknown rot was observed on fruit that was marketed in Torino (northern Italy). The decayed area started from the stalk, appeared irregular and soft, and was surrounded by a dark brown margin. The internal decayed area appeared rotten, brown, and surrounded by bleached tissue. Fragments (approximately 3 mm) were taken from the margin of the internal diseased tissues, cultured on potato dextrose agar (PDA), and incubated at temperatures between 21 and 25°C under alternating conditions of light and dark. Colonies of the fungus initially appeared whitish, later turning mouse gray to black. Mature mycelium was septate and produced a dark pigment. The fungus, grown on oat agar (2) and incubated at temperatures between 21 and 25°C under alternating light and darkness, produced grayish colonies with a fluffy aerial mycelium that became dark with age and produced black pigments. After 18 days of incubation, such colonies produced pycnidia aggregated into stromatic masses, emerging from decayed tissues, and up to 3 to 4 mm in diameter. Conidia produced in the pycnidia were initially unicellular, hyaline, granulose, ovoid to ellipsoidal, and measured 20.8 to 26.9 × 12.5 to 16.1 (average 24.4 × 13.5) μm. After 7 days, mature conidia became darker, uniseptate, and longitudinally striate. Paraphyses produced within the tissues of pycnidia were hyaline, cylindrical, nonseptate, and up to 63 μm long. Morphological characteristics of mycelia, pycnidia, and conidia observed with a light microscope permitted identify of the fungus as Lasiodiplodia theobromae (3). The internal transcribed spacer (ITS) region of rDNA was amplified using the primers ITS1/ITS4 and sequenced. BLAST analysis (1) of the 488-bp segment showed a 100% similarity with the corresponding sequence (GenBank Accession No. GQ502453) of L. theobromae Pat. Griffon & Maubl. The nucleotide sequence of the strain used for pathogenicity tests was submitted to GenBank (Accession No. JN849098). Pathogenicity tests were performed by inoculating 10 avocado fruits after surface disinfesting in 1% sodium hypochlorite and then wounding. Mycelial disks (8 mm in diameter) obtained from PDA cultures of one strain were placed on wounds. Ten control fruits were inoculated with plain PDA. Fruits were incubated at 15 ± 1°C. The first symptoms developed 4 days after the artificial inoculation. After 7 days, the rot was evident and L. theobromae was consistently reisolated. Noninoculated fruit remained healthy. The pathogenicity test was performed twice. To our knowledge, this is the first report of the presence of L. theobromae causing postharvest fruit rot on avocado in Italy, as well as in Europe. The occurrence of postharvest fruit rot on avocado caused by L. theobromae was described in many avocado-producing areas such as the United States (4), South Africa, and Israel. Abstract:
In post-war Italy, ‘reformism’ has been ignored by many, wished for by some, and pursued by only a few. While it was a beacon for the major progressive political forces of Western countries, in Italy this idea was for a long time considered an ‘impossible’ vision. Even when there have been attempts to trace its development, explain the reasons for its failure, or reassess some of its merits, it has been sought everywhere except where it should actually be located: within those parties which defined themselves and considered themselves reformist, for example within the social democrat tradition. For a long period on the political level, Italian social democracy was squeezed between the formidable Catholic tradition and a powerful Communist culture. These pressures contributed to its negation, on both a historiographical and a political level, including a denial of the features of modernity in its development, or at the very least the obscuring of its achievements. Italian reformism, whether a ‘possible’ or ‘impossible’ option, has thus been removed from consideration, both in politics and in historiography.

Abstract:
The village of Villagrande Strisaili, situated in central highlands of the island of Sardinia, Italy, is the subject of this ethnographic study of economic and cultural change. In Part I, a brief historical overview reveals that the pre-war society was largely subsistence based, with shepherding providing milk and cheese to sell on the market for cash. A strict division of labour and responsibilities by sex required mutual dependency of the male and female heads of a household, and supported local notions of gender equality. Part II examines the economic basis of and the restructuring of occupational opportunities in Villagrande today. Although shepherding and subsistence production continue to be important local activities, they are no longer the dominant forms of economic production and secure positions in government offices and institutions are now the preferred occupations. The profound cultural changes of recent decades is the focus of Part III. The notion of local culture, and of a distinctive local identity, is disappearing as cosmopolitan culture becomes localized through local acceptance. Contemporary villagers now create their sense of identity in terms of a wider reality, as defined by the powerful messages of the cosmopolitan system which are efficiently disseminated to villagers through the state educational system and the ubiquitous mass media. These cultural changes have unexpected consequences on the local culture and its reproduction to future generations.

Abstract:
What accounts for the differences in the economic performance across Italian regions in the post-Unification period? This thesis seeks to explain the regional patterns of economic development and industrialization in Italy in the period 1871-1911 by applying various Economic Geography models. The first part follows Overman and Puga (2002) and studies the distribution of industrial employment across regions. The aim is to test the effect of regional borders on the distribution of industrial employment. The existence of this border effect, tested through the use of provincial data, suggests that the Italian regions in this period represented meaningful economic entities. By testing the effect of pre-1861 borders we link this result to the persistence of pre-Unification institutional arrangements. The second part follows the methodology by Head and Mayer (2011) and investigates the relationship between economic performance and market access. Here market access is captured through market potential, a measure of the centrality of a region based on GDP and transport costs. The main result is that domestic market potential is a strong determinant of GDP per capita while all the formulations of market potential that include trading partners give more mixed results. The last part seeks to explain the location of industries in Italy in the period 1871–1911. The analytical framework takes into account both the Heckscher-Ohlin (H-O) theory on factor endowment and the New Economic Geography (NEG) theory on access to markets. The methodology used here is based on Midelfart-Knarvik et al. (2000). The location of industries, measured through employment per region per sector, is explained with interactions between characteristics of the regions and characteristics of the sectors, of both H-O and NEG-type. The main findings of this chapter are that endowments, and in particular human capital, were the driving force behind the first Italian industrialization while access to markets had a more limited effect.

Abstract:
The economic impact of large influxes of population is a complex topic. This research contributes to this field by examining one of the most significant, but least researched, examples of postwar migration – the repatriation of more than six million (including three million civilians and demobilised soldiers each) to Japan after the Second World War. One pervasive image of Japanese civilian repatriates is that of the immigrant farmer of Manchuria who settled as a part of Japan’s Manchurian policies and had difficult repatriation experiences under the hostility of local people. However, many returned from other regions as well, including Korea and Sakhalin, and repatriates consisted of not only farmers but also colonial government officials, employees of public and private corporations, and small business owners, amongst others. This paper specifically focuses on civilian repatriates in selected prefectures (Ibaraki, Hiroshima, Kanagawa and Osaka) in 1956 and their occupational changes during the time of economic transition. Whilst it is evident that for many repatriates the postwar transition was not entirely smooth, the data presented in this research suggests that in contrast to prevailing notions, repatriates’ postwar resettlement was facilitated by a) employment in family farming and the tertiary sector, b) employment at government agencies or c) the transferability of repatriates’ skills in industry and retail and services. The information from the 1956 government survey into repatriates’ postwar lives shows that approximately 60 per cent of repatriates fell in these categories, while the other 40 per cent found employment in new areas or became unemployed. As a result, despite the scale of the repatriation, the settlement was broadly successful. It can be argued that this type of transition helped to bring political and economic stability, which became a foundation of Japan’s postwar growth.

Abstract:
This study in local history describes socio-economic developments in Grahamstown between 1918 - 1945, and analyses the extent to which these developments mirrored trends in the macrocosm. During these years the city failed to become ndustrialised, but enhanced her reputation as an eminent educational centre. Despite being financially handicapped, the City Council undertook large public works schemes for the provision of essential services, such as electricity and an adequate supply of water. In addition a water-borne sewerage scheme was introduced, and roads were repaired and tarred. The influx of a large number of poor rural Blacks into the urban area placed a considerable strain on the city's health services, and housing projects had to be implemented. Local political affiliations and race relations are examined against the background of national developments, especially the growing entrenchment by the State of the policy of segregation. Attention is also devoted to the impact upon the community of international political crises. The cultural and sporting pursuits, as well as the entertainments enjoyed by Grahamstonians, are investigated; and a picture of the local "mentalite" is presented.

The underperformance of Italy’s macroeconomy is common knowledge, yet empirical evidence has shown that a high quality segment of Italian export oriented firms has outperformed international competitors although the country lacks practically all attributes of a coordinated market economy. This thesis shows that the ability of firms to produce high quality goods in Italy is linked to the practice of "capital skill asset pooling" within a novel model of production organisation, "disintegrated hierarchy". "Capital-skill asset pooling" follows from the vertical disintegration of production functions across firms and entails the sharing of production assets between firms governed by heterogeneous institutional frameworks. Through the comparisons of firm-level case studies across three industries, the thesis shows that two simultaneous conditions are necessary for "capitalskill asset pooling" to develop: 1) the presence of lead firms endowed with patient capital, and 2) the presence small suppliers endowed with firm-, industry- and product-specific skills. This finding complements the Varieties of Capitalism literature by showing that firms can produce high or diversified quality goods in the absence of the necessary institutional preconditions by developing functional substitutes to coordinated market economy assets through "capital-skill asset pooling".

In many respects, the mid-nineteenth century marks the beginning of China’s modern history: the Opium War (1839-42) and domestic turbulence compelled Chinese statesmen to realise that the old state apparatus was no longer able to cope with the changing world. However the pursuit of greater state capacity collided with a feeble ability to raise taxes and an ancient monetary system far from being unified. How did the government carry out even limited alterations to the monetary system in times of urgent fiscal need? And how did the monetary evolution proceed with these partial reforms? This thesis focuses on the movement of the Chinese monetary system from a traditional metallic system to a modern fiat money system, and discusses three issues during different phases of the transition. The first part re-examines the case of ‘Xianfeng inflation’ (1853-61) when the government attempted to issue new monies to resolve the crisis in public finances. It points out that under the traditional commodity money system the government had little impact on money supply, and that the so-called inflation was an outcome of coinage debasement combined with a banking crisis resulting from the debt default. The second part focuses on the introduction of modern coinage minted with steam power around the 1900s, enabling the government to supply credible monies that no longer relied on their intrinsic metallic values. It argues that this technological innovation allowed the Chinese government for the first time to implement effective monetary manipulation and exert an impact on the rural economy. The third part investigates the behaviour of money holders during a war. It compares the velocities of paper notes issued in Free China and Occupied China during the Second World War (1937-45) and demonstrates that the credibility of the monies depends most on people’s expectations about the survival of the regime. The transition from a traditional to a modern currency system is a search for a new monetary credibility that had formerly lain within the value of the metal. The evolution of the Chinese monetary system illustrates vividly the constant state struggle between monetary credibility – via coercion, technology, or legitimacy – and its pocket gain, when the fiscal soundness is at stake.

AbstractA large strand of research in the economics and sociology of education has highlighted the existence of deeply rooted inequalities in educational choices along socioeconomic lines, even when net of prior performance. These disparities may take different forms at different stages of schooling and across institutional systems. Yet, due to the lack of data, it is often difficult to disentangle the role played by the various dimensions of socioeconomic background on students’ educational careers. While parental education and occupation may shape aspirations (and thus the wish to undertake ambitious educational programmes), lack of income could represent a material obstacle to the continuation of study. In this chapter, we focus on the effect of financial conditions on the probability of dropping out from university. Italy is an interesting study case, because the education system is mainly public and university tuition fees are relatively low and income progressive. Because direct costs for disadvantaged students are low, we would expect income not to be highly relevant in this context. By exploiting a unique data set from the University of Torino (in northern Italy) linking administrative data from students’ university careers and information on parental characteristics collected at matriculation, we analyse how socioeconomic background influences the first-year dropout probability. While extremely relevant in earlier educational outcomes, parental education and occupation no longer exert a sizable effect at this point in students’ lives. Instead, we find that economic conditions greatly influence the chances of completing university. This result suggests that low tuition fees may be insufficient to foster the participation of low-income high school graduates and that additional forms of support might be needed to ensure equity and, at the same time, raise the share of young people with higher education degrees, which is still too low in Italy.

Princeton, NJ: Princeton University Press, 1990) and transition (Walther, YOUNG, 14(2), 119–139, 2006) regimes characterizing their countries. Relying on the Capability Approach (Sen, Development as freedom. Oxford: Oxford University Press, 1999; Nussbaum, Women and human development. Cambridge: Cambridge University Press, 2000), we explore how young people’s capacity to cope with challenges and their ability to actively navigate obstacles are influenced by the wider discursive and institutional opportunity structures in which they unfold their life paths. The analysis reveals how youths make their choices according to their “capacity to aspire” (Appadurai 2004) and the social, cultural and economic factors at play in exercising their navigational capacities; being able (or unable) to define life plans potentially constitutes a “new” factor of inequality. AbstractThe development of policies and targeted initiatives that promote or support active participatory citizenship for vulnerable young adults with low skills has largely passed unnoticed in Southern Europe in the last decade. Despite the existing lifelong learning (LLL) strategies, most countries in the area do not place active citizenship for low-skilled young adults as a priority. This chapter is based on the results of the European research project EduMAP (Horizon 2020), and focuses on participation of unemployed young adults with low skills (hence early school-leavers) in educational activities that either focus or promote active citizenship in Southern Europe (Greece, Cyprus, Malta, Italy, Spain and Portugal). More specifically the chapter explains the reasons behind low participation rates among vulnerable young adults in the region. South European countries are not yet showing any favourable conditions for increasing participation of the low-skilled unemployed young adults in such programmes. Some of the countries that were hit by economic depression in particular, face –not necessarily for the same reasons– major barriers for implementing policies to increase the number of low-skilled young adults in active citizenship oriented courses. The chapter concludes that one of the problems in promoting active citizenship through adult education activities is that the programmes delivered in the region are still not competence-based. Adult education is not high in the value system, and therefore low skilled young adults do not appear motivated to obtain such skills and competences. A key challenge therefore is to deliver a service that simultaneously meets the needs of the learners, provides sufficient responses to the needs of the local societies, and stimulates further demand.

The relationship between architectural expressiveness and concrete formal structure was the leitmotif of the Italian structuralism in the second post-war two decades. The design of industrial structures radicalized this relationship because of the nature of the production processes that imposed to the architect the dimension of standardisation, repetition and economy of means. This approach reduced the distance between architectural form and informal building. This research aims to show how this condition transforms the idea of design process by some Italian authors, in the restricted field of reinforced-concrete structures for industry. The architectural form becomes a process that includes all the aspects of the project: the technological content (cooling, ventilation and water-drainage systems), the economic side, the engineering start up. In this way, the project of industrial structures is an outcome of the components design, constituted by structural elements (pillars, beams, desk boards), and controlled by the project of a structural bay, as a device for the design process. In this sense, the proposed paper shows the research on the Kodak factory in Marcianise by Aldo Favini and Gianluigi Gh. as a paradigm of this phenomenon. The paper illustrates how the hollow structural form of the elements addresses the problem of the technological content in the architectural design, showing morphological- structural models that isolates the bay as a design device. This aspect defines a specific quality of the industrial prototypes, developed through the professional partnership between the architect and the engineer. The knowledge about this kind of industrial prototypes is useful on one hand to admit these building as an Italian historical heritage that needs to be preserved, on the other hand to understand how it is possible transform these buildings through a new adaptive reuse.

Based on the analysis of works on the history of Tajikistan during the Great Patriotic War, the article reveals that the topic of the history of the Republic’s population has not received sufficient research. Tajik historians have focused on economic development, primarily in agriculture, labour feat and assistance to the front. In recent years, various papers were published about the difficult living conditions of the population, work of health authorities, reception and accommodation of evacuees and special settlers. Analysis of archival intelligence demonstrated that statistical information about the population contained in the archives of Tajikistan and Russia will form the basis for studying demographic processes in war conditions.

Abstract:
The article elucidates the situation of children in educational institutions in the Moldavian Soviet Socialist Republic in the context of the reoccupation of Bessarabia and the restoration of the Soviet-type educational system. Following the analysis of the archive documents, we found that the general schooling of the children was carried out in precarious socio-economic conditions, in the absence of appropriate buildings, furniture and adequate teaching inventory. It also happened in situations of poverty, when a large part of the population did not have enough resources to dress and feed children properly. The unsatisfactory conditions in schools have led to poor results in studies, the spread of diseases and epidemics among children. The situation in the educational institutions of the Moldavian SSR in the academic year 1944–1945 clearly illustrates that schooling had a compulsory character being motivated by the interest of the Soviet authorities to install administrative, political and ideological control over the young generation. After the occupation of Bessarabia, given the continuation of military operations to the countries of Western Europe and the need of restoration following them, resources were insufficient and political and ideological objectives were achieved in circumstances of poverty. The 1944–1945 academic year was a turning point for the young generation in the Moldovan SSR. It began to be subjected to ideological training through ideological study programs and involvement in communist organizations for children and youth. Also, the “convert” of children to the communist ideology, to the detriment of national traditions and values, began.

This paper presents a mathematical model for the thermo-economic evaluation of an Organic Rankine Cycle (ORC), which recovers exhaust gases from an internal combustion engine (ICE) based cogeneration plant, currently in operation in Turin, Italy. The model is based on a complete set of experimental data of the plant, for both nominal and partial load operation conditions. The main components of the ORC plant have been modelled and a thermo-economic analysis has been carried out for each component. The aim of the paper is to perform a thermo-economic analysis of the system through the Theory of Exergetic Cost, in order to provide a complete diagnosis of the plant, by quantifying the performances of the whole system and its sub-systems, and by determining the monetary costs and the exergetic costs. The model can represent a useful decision-making tool for the optimal design of similar plants.

Abstract The present study presents a techno-economic analysis of a novel power plant layout developed to increase the dispatch flexibility of a Combined Cycle Gas Turbine (CCGT) coupled to a District Heating Network (DHN). The layout includes the incorporation of high temperature heat pumps (HP) and thermal energy storage (TES). A model for optimizing the short-term dispatch strategy of such system has been developed to maximize its operational profit. The constraints and boundary conditions considered in the study include hourly demand and price of electricity and heat, ambient conditions and CO2 emission allowances. To assess the techno-economic benefit of the new layout, a year of operation was simulated for a power plant in Turin, Italy. Furthermore, different layout configurations and critical size-related parameters were considered. Finally, a sensitivity analysis was made to assess the performance under different market scenarios. The results show that it is indeed beneficial, under the assumed market conditions, to integrate a HP in a CCGT plant coupled to a DHN, and that it remains profitable to do so under a variety of market scenarios. The best results for the assumed market conditions were found when integrating a 15 MWth capacity HP in the 400 MWel CCGT-CHP. For this case study, the investment in the HP would yield a net present value (NPV) of 1.22 M€ and an internal rate of return (IRR) of 3.04% for a lifetime of 20 years. An increase was shown also in operational flexibility with 0.14% of the electricity production shifted while meeting the same heating demand. Additionally, it was found that the TES makes the system even more flexible, but does not make up for the extra investment.

The study of the hydraulic factories (mills, forges, trip hammers, etc.) of the Valle Sabbia, conducted by a University of Brescia research group, within the "Resilient Valleys" project (funded by the Cariplo Foundation), led to the definition of a protocol or guidelines with the ambition of identifying shared and adequate codes of practice to guarantee the correct recovery of this heritage. The object of the survey are artefacts located in functional positions for production activities, today often isolated and not very accessible. The architectural structure and construction features make them particularly vulnerable to deterioration, moreso than other types of artefacts. What remains of this building heritage is much closer to the conditions of a ruin which, if recovered or simply maintained, could very effectively convey some of the most characteristic features of local economic history. To conserve and maintain this heritage, operational indications and good practice suggestions are proposed, useful in interventions on buildings and hydraulic artefacts. There is neither a compendium with recipes to follow step by step nor even exemplary models, but rather a critical path method that starts from the direct and physical knowledge of the heritage, to arrive at the timely and most suitable conservation intervention. Method suggestions are proposed, which aim to help the owners, users or managers of these architectures, in choosing, within a scenario of traditional and innovative construction techniques available, the most suitable and correct ones to guarantee respect for the buildings’ and hydraulic works’ characteristics, their constructive, morphological, technological, material peculiarities and, therefore, to monitor and/or solve problems of decay and instability. Ample space is also dedicated to the planned conservation process, in which enhancement will contribute to respecting the material and intellectual integrity of the ruin.

Introduction: The analysis of occupational morbidity is the most important tool for preventive measures development, aiming to working conditions improvement and professional health preservation. The goal of this work is occupational morbidity in Russia and other countries for 2010-2019 comparative analysis. Methods: Working conditions and occupational morbidity rates in Russia were analyzed, 2010-2019. Comparative analysis of occupational morbidity in Russia and other countries was carried out according to WHO, ILO and NIOSH (USA) data. Results: The share of people employed in harmful working conditions increased in Russia for 2010-2019. It reached more than 55% in certain types of economic activities. At the same time, occupational morbidity in Russia has been decreasing annually, for the period of 2010-2019 the decrease was 40.5% (1.73 in 2010, 1.03 in 2019). The occupational morbidity rates in Russia were significantly lower compared to other countries: by 18 times compared to France, by 10 times compared to Italy, by 5 times compared to Germany and by 12 times compared to the USA. Conclusion: Low rates of occupational morbidity in Russia compared to other countries, with a high share of people employed in harmful working conditions and extremely high mortality rates in working population indicate a possible problem of underestimation of occupational diseases.

In a trigeneration plant, the thermal energy recovered from the prime mover is exploited to produce a cooling effect. Although this possibility allows the working hours of the plant to be extended over the heating period, providing summer air conditioning through thermally activated technologies, it is rather difficult to find experimental data on trigeneration plant operation in the literature, and information on the performance characteristics at off-design conditions is rather limited. The paper has the aim of illustrating the experimental data of a real trigeneration system installed at the Politecnico di Torino (Turin, Italy). The system is composed of a natural gas 100 kWel microturbine coupled to a liquid desiccant system. The data are presented for both cogeneration and trigeneration configurations, and for full and partial load operations. An energetic and economic performance assessment, at rated power operation, is presented and compared with the partial load operation strategy. The primary energy savings are calculated through a widely accepted methodology, proposed by the European Union, and through another methodology, reported in literature, which, according to the Authors, seems more suitable to describe the energetic performances of trigeneration plants.

Abstract:
This study aims at the development of a software tool for supply and demand matching of electrical and thermal energy in an urban district. In particular, the tool has been developed for E-NERDD, the experimental district that TPG-DIMSET is going to build in Savona, Italy. E-NERDD is an acronym for Energy and Efficiency Research Demonstration District. It is one of the districts that will be used within the project to demonstrate how different software tools and algorithms perform in thermodynamic, economic and environmental terms. The software tool originally developed for and implemented in this work, called E-NERDD Control System, is targeted on enabling the operation of the hardware, when connected in a district mode. Supply and demand are matched to reach a thermoeconomic optimum. An optimization algorithm is organized into two different levels of optimization: a first level that resolves a constrained minimization problem in planning power supply for each generator on the basis of day-before forecasting; and a second level that distributes among the different machines the gap between planned and real-time demand. The algorithm developed is demonstrated in four test cases in order to test it in different working conditions.

Abstract:
This brief sets out key considerations linked to the promotion of COVID-19 vaccine uptake among undocumented migrants residing in Rome, Italy. We focus on strategies to equitably distribute COVID-19 vaccines. Evidence from Italy is applicable to other contexts where vaccine administration is tied to “vaccine passports” or “immunity passes”. Undocumented migrants have been considered as some of the “hardest to reach” groups to engage in COVID-19 vaccination outreach. This brief uses the term undocumented migrant or migrant for brevity, but we refer to people living without formal Italian citizenship, refugee status or right to remain in Italy. This brief explores the everyday context of undocumented migrants lives, and how experiences of the COVID-19 pandemic have exacerbated difficult conditions. It links emerging vulnerabilities to perceptions of vaccines, and we suggest that migrants orientate themselves towards the vaccines within frameworks which prioritise economic survival. In many cases, migrants have accepted a COVID-19 vaccine to access paid employment, yet this has often generated mistrust in the state and healthcare system. Accordingly, this brief considers how vaccines can be distributed equitably to boost trust and inclusion in the post-pandemic world. This brief draws primarily on the ethnographic evidence collected through interviews and observations with undocumented migrants in Rome, along with civil society representatives and health workers between December 2021 and January 2022. This brief was developed for SSHAP by Sara Vallerani (Rome Tre University), Elizabeth Storer (LSE) and Costanza Torre (LSE).
