Nel 1913 Amy Bernardy (1880-1959), giornalista e storica fiorentina, scrive Italia randagia, resoconto dettagliato della situazione materiale e morale degli emigrati italiani negli Stati Uniti. Poco frequentata dall’ambiente accademico, che le dedica – soprattutto in anni recenti – studi di natura prevalentemente biografico-letteraria, la Bernardy è la prima giornalista ad offrire nei suoi scritti uno spaccato fedele della vita delle comunità italiane d’oltreoceano (cfr. Prezzolini 1960). Delle rare fonti oggi a disposizione, pochissime sembrano soffermarsi sull’attenzione riservata dalla Bernardy alla questione linguistica degli immigrati italiani in Nord America. Il contributo si propone dunque di fornire, in una prospettiva storico-linguistica, un close reading di quei capitoli che in Italia randagia esaminano i tratti di un inglese «rivestito di forme italiane» (Bernardy, 1913: 89), che, se nelle sue espressioni individuali perde gradualmente i caratteri identitari, nelle sue manifestazioni collettive resta invece saldamente ancorato alla propria italianità. I tentativi di adattamento al nuovo contesto sociale e culturale si declinano e si coniugano in una lingua dai tratti confusi, «italiana d’aspetto» e «inglese d’etimologia» (p. 91): è l’«italiano del sì» che progressivamente diventa «italiano del iesse» (p. 93). The language of iesse. Linguistic observations in Amy Bernardy’s Italia randagia In 1913, Florentine journalist and historian Amy Bernardy (1880-1959) published Italia randagia, a detailed account of the material and moral conditions of Italian emigrants in the United States. Although largely overlooked by the academic community, which has only recently dedicated predominantly biographical-literary studies to her work, Bernardy was the first journalist to provide a faithful depiction of the lives of Italian communities overseas (see Prezzolini 1960). Of the rare available sources, very few focus on Bernardy’s attention to the linguistic issues faced by Italian immigrants in North America. This paper aims to offer a close reading, from a historical-linguistic perspective, of the chapters in Italia randagia that examine the characteristics of an English «rivestito di forme italiane» (Bernardy, 1913: 89), a language that, while gradually losing its identity on an individual level, remains collectively anchored to its Italian roots. The attempts to adapt to the new social and cultural context are reflected in a language with blurred features, «italiana d’aspetto» and «inglese d’etimologia» (p. 91). This linguistic shift marks the transition from the «italiano del sì» to the «italiano del iesse» (p. 93).

L’emigrazione, mai interrotta, è da sempre una peculiarità dell’Italia. Negli ultimi anni, i protagonisti dei flussi in uscita sono però diversi sia culturalmente sia linguisticamente da quelli dei secoli scorsi. Nonostante questo cambiamento, continua ancora l’assistenza spirituale e sociale che la Chiesa cattolica italiana dà ai connazionali all’estero. Dal momento che la sua missione si realizza attraverso la lingua e il suo credo si fonda sulla Parola, la Chiesa si interessa molto alla questione linguistica. In questo contributo verranno presentati i risultati di un’indagine condotta mediante interviste e osservazioni partecipanti in due città della Germania – paese che, almeno da tre anni, è al secondo posto sia per nuovi arrivi di italiani sia per comunità italiana residente – con lo scopo di individuare la consapevolezza della Chiesa italiana in Germania circa i cambiamenti sociali, linguistici e culturali apportati dalla neoemigrazione.
 
 Italian neo-emigration in a religious context: a study in Germany
 Continuous emigration has always been a distinctive feature of Italy. In recent years, however, Italian emigrants have distinguished themselves both culturally and linguistically from the previous migratory flows of Italians. Despite this change, the spiritual and social assistance that the Italian Catholic Church gives to its fellow countrymen abroad is still ongoing. Furthermore, the Italian Catholic Church is particularly interested in the linguistic dimensions, given the fact that its mission is carried out through language and its creed is based on words. This paper aims to identify the awareness of the Italian Church in Germany about the social, linguistic and cultural changes brought about by the new emigration flows from Italy, presenting the results of a survey conducted through interviews and participant observations in two cities in Germany, a country which, for at least three years, has been in second place both in terms of the number of new arrival of Italians and the ones already emigrated.

Sono ormai svariate le meritorie esperienze di ricerca sulle comunità italiane all’estero, soprattutto in contesti in cui il fenomeno ha conosciuto una considerevole estensione. Ma tra tutte le realtà censite fino ad ora, sembra risultare ancora assente un’indagine sul contesto ungherese; nonostante la dimensione dell’emigrazione e dei contatti tra Italia e Ungheria non appaiano quantitativamente notevoli, il legame tra le due nazioni è storicamente radicato e ancora oggi molto vivace. Il legame tra Italia e Ungheria è oggi molto saldo, si contano oltre 2.500 aziende (di piccole, medie o grandi dimensioni). Secondo i dati ISTAT e AIRE circa 400 persone ogni anno trasferiscono la propria residenza in Ungheria e negli ultimi 5 anni la presenza italiana è aumentata di oltre un terzo. Il contributo intende però offrire un focus specifico e approfondito sullo studio dell’italiano in Ungheria. In un contesto globale in cui lo studio della lingua italiana sembra recedere, l’Ungheria rappresenta, invece, un’interessante eccezione. Sono, infatti, centinaia gli istituti in cui l’italiano viene insegnato come seconda (o addirittura prima) lingua straniera. L’italiano è al centro di programmi di studi universitari ed esistono Dipartimenti di Italianistica nelle principali Università del paese, a cui si aggiunge l’attività di scuole private e dell’Istituto Italiano di Cultura di Budapest. Grazie all’uso di statistiche e censimenti ufficiali e di un questionario ad hoc disseminato nella comunità degli insegnati tenteremo di ricostruire, anche in chiave diacronica, la situazione dell’insegnamento dell’italiano in Ungheria.
 
 A survey on Italian teaching in Hungary
 Among the several meritorious research experiences on the study of Italian abroad, up to now, a wide-ranging investigation into the Hungarian context still seems to be absent. Although the size of emigration and contacts between Italy and Hungary do not appear quantitatively significant at first sight, the link between the two nations is historically rooted and is still very lively today. There are over 2.500 Italian companies (small, medium or large) in Hungary and according to ISTAT and AIRE data, around 400 people transfer their residence to the Magyar country every year: in the last 5 years the Italian presence has increased by over a third. The contribution intends to offer a specific and in-depth focus on the study of Italian in Hungary. In a global context in which interest in the Italian language seems to be declining, Hungary represents an exception. In fact, there are over a hundred schools where Italian is taught as a second (or even first) foreign language. Italian is at the center of university study programs and various Departments of Italian Studies are active in the main universities of the country, in addition to the activity of private schools and the Italian Cultural Institute in Budapest. Thanks to the use of official statistics and censuses and an ad hoc questionnaire disseminated in the community of teachers, we will try to reconstruct, also in a diachronic key, the situation of teaching Italian as a foreign language in Hungary.

La Lingua dei Segni Italiana (LIS) è stata riconosciuta ufficialmente in Italia con il Decreto Sostegni del 19.5.2021 (Art. 34 ter: Misure per il riconoscimento della Lingua dei Segni Italiana e l'inclusione delle persone con disabilità uditiva). Ciononostante, la LIS è stata individuata come materia di studio e d’insegnamento accademico ben ventisei anni fa. Questo lavoro si propone di delineare una panoramica sull’apprendimento e l’insegnamento della Lingua dei Segni Italiana nell’ambito universitario italiano, partendo dalle circostanze che hanno favorito la nascita dei primi corsi di LIS presso alcuni centri universitari italiani, tra i quali la Scuola Superiore di Lingue Moderne per Interpreti e Traduttori (SSLMIT) di Trieste e l’Università di Teramo. Ciò consentirà di concentrarsi, nella seconda parte, sulle difficoltà riscontrate dagli studenti adulti udenti, gli“L2-M2 learners”, nell’acquisizione della LIS come seconda lingua con una modalità comunicativa differente dalla propria L1 vocale. Si passerà poi ad esaminare come l’insegnamento della LIS viene affrontato nei principali atenei pubblici e privati. Ciò consentirà di stabilire un confronto tra i vari metodi di insegnamento che farà emergere l’eterogeneità dell’esperienza italiana. Learning and teaching italian sign language (LIS) AS L2-M2 at university: observation and analysis of a heterogeneous panorama Italian Sign Language (LIS) has been officially recognized in Italy with the so called “Decreto Sostegni”, dated May 19th, 2021 (Art. 34 ter: Misure per il riconoscimento della Lingua dei Segni Italiana e l'inclusione delle persone con disabilità uditiva). However, LIS was identified as a subject of academic study and teaching twenty-six years ago. This work aims to show an overview of Italian Sign Language learning and teaching in the Italian university context starting from the circumstances that favored the birth of the first LIS courses in some Italian universities, among whom Scuola Superiore di Lingue Moderne per Interpreti e Traduttori (SSLMIT) in Trieste and Università di Teramo. This will allow us to focus on the difficulties experienced by hearing adult students, “L2-M2 learners”, in acquiring LIS as a second language with a different communication modality from their vocal L1. We will therefore examine the main public and private universities that have offered LIS teaching courses within their teaching programs in recent decades. This way we can establish a comparison between different teaching methods which will reveal the heterogeneous reality of the study of LIS in Italy.

L’Italia, con la sua posizione strategica dal punto di vista geopolitico ed economico, è da più di trent’anni meta d’immigrazione, pur continuando al contempo a essere paese di emigrazione. Sebbene la Cina del XXI secolo non si collochi tra i primi Paesi quale meta d’emigrazione italiana, nell’ultimo decennio la presenza della popolazione italiana in Cina è in continuo aumento. Il presente contributo si propone di delineare un profilo sociolinguistico degli emigrati italiani in Cina, in cui si vuole mettere in luce non solo la vitalità e la dinamicità delle varietà dell’italiano, ma anche il contatto tra la comunità italiana e le varietà del paese ospitante. L’indagine si concluderà con uno studio di caso basato su un’intervista qualitativa a una coppia genitore-figlio rappresentanti la prima e seconda generazione di emigrati italiani in Cina. L’intervista è finalizzata ad approfondire l’importanza delle varietà dell’italiano nella trasmissione intra-familiare e nella vita quotidiana, e come la lingua possa plasmare il processo di creazione dell’identità personale.”
 
 “New” Italians between Italy and China: language and identity of a new italianity
 Italy, with its strategic position from a geopolitical and economic point of view, has been a destination for immigrants for more than thirty years, while also continuing to be a country of emigration. Although 21st-century China does not rank among the first countries as a destination for Italian emigration, the presence of the Italian community in China has seen a continuous increase in the last decade. This contribution aims at outlining a sociolinguistic profile of Italian emigrants in China, in which we want to highlight not only the vitality and dynamism of the varieties of the Italian language but also the contact between the Italian community and the linguistic varieties of the host country. The contribution will end with a case study based on a qualitative interview with a parent-child pair representing the first and second generation of Italian emigrants in China. The interview aims at investigating the importance that the varieties of Italian have in intra-family transmission and daily life, and how a language can shape personal identity.

Il presente contributo si propone di descrivere la percezione dell’italianità di alcuni imprenditori italiani e italo-canadesi che operano nell’ambito del Made in Italy nell’area della città di Toronto (Ontario) denominata Little Italy. La categoria del Made in Italy, dal punto di vista legislativo, identifica tutti i prodotti realizzati in Italia e con materia prima italiana e viene opposta a quella di Italian sounding che, al contrario, è associata a prodotti che ricordano l’Italia e che talvolta fingono solamente un legame con il Bel Paese. L’analisi è stata condotta a partire da un corpus di interviste a imprenditori italiani e italo-canadesi che hanno le loro attività nel quartiere che sorge lungo College Street, a Toronto. Lo studio si colloca nell’ambito della sociolinguistica interpretativa e mira a ricostruire la percezione dell’italianità di imprenditori che hanno alcune attività italiane gestite da famiglie italiane e tra le prime aperte lungo College Street. L’analisi ha consentito di cogliere le trasformazioni che il concetto di italianità ha avuto nel corso degli ultimi cinquant’anni e, con esso, come l’italianità nella Little Italy studiata sia passata da heritage a legacy e ad affection.

In una prospettiva di analisi dei processi linguistici fuori dai confini nazionali, non possiamo non esplorare la situazione migratoria che si è avuta in Belgio a seguito degli accordi bilaterali del 1946 con l’Italia. Particolare interesse desta la questione del mantenimento della lingua d’origine degli immigrati italiani. Il presente contributo illustra, in primo luogo, come lo stato italiano è intervenuto al fine di promuovere e attuare iniziative per l’apprendimento e la diffusione della lingua e della cultura italiana all’estero, giungendo, nel corso degli anni, a stipulare accordi di partenariato con il Belgio francofono. Successivamente vengono presentati e discussi i risultati di un’indagine effettuata, secondo una prospettiva sociolinguistica, sugli apprendenti di lingua e cultura italiana a livello di scuola primaria e secondaria nella circoscrizione consolare di Bruxelles. La ricerca, condotta su un campione di 449 studenti, è volta a comprendere qual è la tipologia di utenti che frequenta i corsi extrascolastici tenuti da insegnanti MAECI (docenti di ruolo nella scuola italiana e distaccati all’estero per un determinato periodo di tempo), qual è la loro lingua di eredità culturale, ovvero se sono in maggioranza italiani, di origine italiana o stranieri, italofoni o non italofoni, descrivendone, pertanto, le loro abitudini linguistiche. La ricerca indaga anche sulla motivazione che spinge gli studenti a frequentare tali corsi. Ne risulta un quadro della situazione linguistica dei corsisti che offre spunti interessanti di riflessione.
 
 MAECI and linguistic-cultural promotion initiatives: teaching Italian in Belgium
 In order to analyse linguistic processes outside the national borders, an accurate exploration of the migratory situation occurring in Belgium following the 1946 bilateral agreements with Italy must be performed. Of particular interest is the question of maintaining the language of origin of Italian immigrants. This paper first illustrates how the Italian state has intervened to promote and implement initiatives for the learning and dissemination of Italian language and culture abroad, going so far over the years as to enter into partnership agreements with French-speaking Belgium. Afterwards, the results of a survey conducted from a sociolinguistic perspective on Italian language and culture at the primary and secondary school level in the Brussels consular district are presented and discussed. The research, conducted on a sample of 449 students, is aimed at understanding what type of users attend extracurricular courses taught by MAECI teachers (teachers in the Italian school and detached abroad for a certain period of time), what is their language of cultural inheritance, i.e. whether they are mostly Italian, of Italian origin or foreigners, Italian-speaking or non-Italian-speaking, thus describing their language habits. Furthermore, the research investigates the motivation behind the choice made by the students to follow such classes. As a result, a complete picture of the linguistic situation of MAECI students is provided which offers interesting insights for reflection.

It attempts to verify the major lines of conflict in the relationship between Islam and Italian society, which is by tradition culturally connected to Catholicism. The study investigates different patterns of relationship between Catholic Italians and Muslim Italians in different Italian regions based on the national survey “La nuova religiosità in Italia” [New religiosity in Italy] (2007). By means of research data the authors detect regions with a high potential for conflict and regions where there is greater acceptance of Islam as well as better bases for societal cohesion and cooperation.

Questo articolo si concentra sugli effetti della onward migration sui repertori linguistici delle famiglie di nuovi italiani che sono emigrate in Inghilterra dopo un lungo periodo di vita in Italia. Prendendo in esame interviste sociolinguistiche condotte con i figli maggiori di queste famiglie, lo studio dimostra che l'italiano viene mantenuto nel dominio familiare, soprattutto tra coloro che hanno trascorso più tempo in Italia. I fratelli maggiori aiutano i loro fratelli minori a mantenere la loro competenza nell’italiano e possono utilizzare una combinazione di lingue della famiglia quando comunicano con i genitori quando questi non parlano fluentemente l’inglese. Inoltre, l’italiano continua ad essere nelle conversazioni con gli amici sia in Inghilterra che in Italia e vengono anche sostenuti esame di italiano a scuola. Mentre i dialetti italo-romanzo sono assenti dai repertori linguistici di queste famiglie, altre lingue d’eredità continuano ad essere parlate dai genitori tra loro e con i propri figli; tuttavia, il livello di mantenimento varia a seconda dell’origine etnica di ciascuna famiglia. Per alcuni partecipanti, il trasferimento in Inghilterra li ha anche portati a riscoprire le proprie radici linguistiche.
 THE ONWARD MIGRATION OF NEW ITALIANS TO ENGLAND: RESTRUCTURING OF COMPLEX LINGUISTIC REPERTOIRES AND LANGUAGE MAINTENANCE
 This article focuses on the effects of onward migration in the linguistic repertoires of families of new Italians who have migrated to England after a long period of life in Italy. Drawing on sociolinguistic interviews undertaken with the elder children of these families, the study finds that Italian is maintained in the family domain, particularly among those who spent more time in Italy. The elder siblings assist their younger siblings in maintaining their Italian proficiency and may use a combination of family languages when communicating with parents when these are not fluent in English. Furthermore, Italian is still being used with friends both in England and back home in Italy, as well as being taken as exam at school. While Italo-Romance dialects are absent from these families' linguistic repertoires, other heritage languages continue to be spoken by parents amongst themselves and with their children; however, maintenance levels vary depending on each family's ethnic background. For some participants, moving to England has also led them to rediscover their linguistic roots.

The first step in designing a course is writing the syllabus. This involves deciding the subject matter, the topics covered and the objectives. Today, it is more than ever important also to focus our attention on writing our syllabi to be as inclusive as possible to make all students feel welcome and safe. Furthermore, the materials in of some textbooks do not reflect contemporary Italian society both in language exercises (i.e., not allowing for answers like “voi vi siete sposate”) and in cultural readings (i.e., the woman takes care of the family). This paper focuses on providing suggestions on ways to degenderize an Italian language syllabus and to promote gender equity. Moreover, part of this article focuses on resources and activities to propose in class to help students understand the contemporary Italian society and reflect on the use of the Italian language in the LGBTQIA+ Italian community.
 
 Degenerizzare il syllabus di italiano: riflessioni e suggerimenti su come rendere la lingua italiana più inclusiva nei corsi di italiano
 La prima cosa da fare quando si progetta un corso è scriverne il sillabo. Si decide l’argomento delle classi, gli argomenti che si tratteranno e gli obiettivi. Nella società contemporanea è ancora più importante porre la nostra attenzione nello scrivere i nostri sillabi nel modo più inclusivo possibile in modo da far sentire tutti gli studenti benvenuti e sicuri. Inoltre, i materiali presenti in molti libri di testo non riflettono la società italiana contemporanea sia negli esercizi di lingua (per esempio non accettando come corrette risposte come “voi vi siete sposate”) che nelle letture culturali (per esempio “la donna si occupa della famiglia). Questo breve articolo si concentra sul dare suggerimenti su metodi per “degenerizzare” un sillabo di un corso di lingua italiana e promuovere l’equità di genere. Inoltre, una parte di questo articolo suggerisce una serie di risorse e attività che possono essere proposte in classe per aiutare gli studenti a capire la società italiana contemporanea, e per riflettere sull’uso della lingua italiana nella comunità LGBTQIA+.

Il presente articolo illustra la storia dell’insegnamento della lingua italiana nella Repubblica Popolare Cinese, con particolare riferimento alle testimonianze raccolte dal 1962 al 2022 nel Dipartimento di italiano della Beijing Foreign Studies University, una delle prime università cinesi ad insegnare la lingua e la letteratura italiana. Utilizzando le fonti archivistiche dell’Ateneo e le fonti orali dei testimoni, l’autrice ricostruisce la storia del sopracitato Dipartimento in tre fasi, in stretto contatto con l’ambiente cinese e con il contesto del rapporto tra Italia e Cina, sottolineando in ogni fase gli aspetti connessi alle condizioni di ammissione degli studenti, della qualificazione dei docenti, dei lavori lessicografici, dei materiali didattici e delle metodologie glottodidattiche.
 
 Teaching Italian language in the people’s republic of China: a case study at the department of Italian at Beijing foreign studies university between 1962 and 2022
 This paper illustrates the history of Italian language teaching in the People’s Republic of China, with particular reference to evidence gathered from 1962 to 2022 at the Department of Italian at Beijing Foreign Studies University, one of the first Chinese universities to teach Italian language and literature. Using the archival sources of the University and the oral sources of witnesses, the author reconstructs the history of the aforementioned Department in three phases, in close contact with the Chinese environment and within the context of the relationship between Italy and China, emphasizing in each phase the aspects related to the conditions for the admission of students, the qualification of teachers, lexicographic works, teaching materials and language teaching methodologies.

La Leichte Sprache tedesca e il linguaggio facile italiano sono forme di semplificazione linguistica: i testi prodotti in queste varietà seguono le regole contenute nelle linee guida (ad esempio quelle di Inclusion Europe) che variano, almeno in parte, a seconda della lingua. Molte delle linee guida sulla Leichte Sprache offrono indicazioni sull’utilizzo del linguaggio sensibile al genere, mentre le linee guida sul linguaggio facile italiano non danno alcuna indicazione. Partendo da questa diversità, il presente saggio analizza l’uso del linguaggio sensibile al genere in due corpora: il primo è un corpus parallelo di testi in Leichte Sprache e in linguaggio facile italiano prodotti in Alto Adige, il secondo è un corpus comparabile di guide ai musei tedeschi ed italiani in Leichte Sprache e in linguaggio facile italiano. L’analisi delle denominazioni di persona evidenzia gli influssi dei testi tedeschi sui testi italiani nel corpus parallelo, anche se vi sono casi di discrepanza nelle strategie utilizzate (ad esempio: Beraterinnen und Berater reso in italiano con i consulenti). I testi del corpus comparabile mostrano una prevalenza di denominazioni al maschile con percentuali similari in tedesco e in italiano. I risultati delle due analisi sono da collocare entro i limiti delle possibilità poste dai corpora stessi: la presenza scarsa di materiale autentico in lingua facile italiana non permette (ancora) di svolgere indagini su corpora più grandi e su generi testuali e comunicativi che potrebbero dare luogo a usi più variegati del linguaggio sensibile al genere (ad esempio siti web di Amministrazioni pubbliche, di Università ecc.). Ricerche future a carattere contrastivo su corpora più ampi sono necessarie per monitorare gli sviluppi nell’utilizzo del linguaggio sensibile al genere. Gender-sensitive language? Developments and Limits in the German Leichte Sprache and Italian Easy Language German Easy Language and Italian Easy Language are forms of linguistic simplification: texts produced in these varieties follow the rules contained in guidelines (e.g. those of Inclusion Europe) that vary, at least in part, according to the language. Many of the guidelines on German Easy Language give indications on the use of gender-sensitive language, while the guidelines on Italian Easy Language do not give any indication. Moving from this difference, this essay analyses the use of gender-sensitive language in two corpora: the first is a parallel corpus of texts in German and Italian Easy Language produced in South Tyrol, the second is a comparable corpus of German and Italian museum guides in German and Italian Easy Language. The analysis of the human nouns shows the influences of the German texts on the Italian texts in the parallel corpus, even though there are examples discrepancies in the strategies used (e.g. Beraterinnen und Berater rendered in Italian with the generic masculine i consulenti). The texts in the comparable corpus show a prevalence of masculine nouns with similar percentages in German and Italian. The results of the two analyses are to be placed within the limits of the possibilities posed by the corpora themselves: the scarce presence of authentic texts in Italian Easy Language does not (yet) allow investigations on larger corpora and on textual and communicative genres that could give rise to more varied uses of gender-sensitive language (e.g. websites of public administrations, universities, etc.). Future contrastive research on larger corpora is needed to monitor developments in the use of gender-sensitive language.

Abstract: This contribution will focus on the relationship between the Italian legal system and same-sex couples. Firstly, certain key issues which have arisen so far in the context of cross-border samesex couples under the former Italian legal system will be tackled in order to investigate how this system handled non-traditional family ties established abroad when lacking the relevant legal framework. Secondly, the brand new Italian law no. 76/2016 on same-sex civil unions and de facto cohabitants will be briefly addressed in order to verify whether this law effectively fits the overall aim to overcome gender barriers in family matters in Italy. Lastly, the new Italian conflicts-of-law rules devoted to cross-border civil unions will be considered in order to evaluate whether the serious drawbacks arising from a denied genderless continuity of family status granted abroad are effectively overcome.Keywords: same-sex marriages, same-sex adoption, civil unions, continuity of family status, public policy.Riassunto: Il presente contributo analizza i rapporti tra ordinamento italiano e coppie omosessuali. In primo luogo, saranno affrontati alcuni problemi sorti nell’ambito dell’ordinamento italiano in merito al trattamento delle coppie omosessuali con elementi d’internazionalità al fine di verificare come tale ordinamento abbia gestito i rapporti familiari non tradizionali sorti all’estero pur in difetto di una disciplina di riferimento. In secondo luogo, si analizzerà brevemente la recente legge n. 76/2016 sulle unioni civili e coabitazioni di fatto al fine di verificare se essa effettivamente consenta di superare le barriere di genere in Italia. I risultati mostrano che i social media hanno solo una piccola influenza sull'uso della lingua degli intervistati e non è chiaro se gli utenti della lingua vedano il cambiamento nella lingua italiana come un'evoluzione o una regressione.
 
 THE IMPACT OF SOCIAL MEDIA ON THE ITALIAN LANGUAGE
 In the Italian-language study, n = 97 native-speaking Italian respondents were assessed for their language use characteristics and attitudes in relation to the interaction between Social Media and the Italian language. The results show that Social Media has only a small influence on the language use of the respondents and it is not clear whether language users see the change in the Italian language as evolution or regression.

Montreal playwright Steve Galluccio states, “Italian immigrants, they weren’t gay.” The traditional values of Italians in Canada have often led to the marginalization of members of the LGBTQ+ community. For some, being queer and being of Italian origin is irreconcilable. Traditionally, the queer experience is not acknowledged in Italian immigrant homes. Today, there is still some reticence in the Italian-Canadian community, in both private and public spaces. Galluccio writes about his Italian origins and about being openly gay. Through his writing, he brings together two communities (LGBTQ+ and Italian Canadians) that often seem disconnected. This paper discusses Galluccio’s contribution to Italian-Canadian literature. It introduces his works, from the very popular Mambo Italiano to the most recent At the Beginning of Time, and looks at the connection between his literary contribution, Italian heritage, and queer identity.

Il contributo propone alcune considerazioni sul rapporto lingua-etnicità-identità in riferimento ai discendenti degli emigrati italiani in California, Stato che nel 2021 risulta il terzo negli USA, dopo New York e Pennsylvania, per presenza di residenti con origini italiane (oltre 1 milione e 300 mila). Sarà illustrata in particolare la situazione dell’area settentrionale della Baia di San Francisco, intensamente colonizzata dagli emigrati italiani fin dalla seconda metà del sec. XIX e attualmente popolata dalle percentuali più alte di loro discendenti all’interno dello Stato. Come i risultati di precedenti studi hanno evidenziato, l’insieme di positive circostanze geografiche, demografiche e sociali che ha contraddistinto la storia della comunità italiana in questi territori non è valso ad ostacolare il processo di sostituzione linguistica che entro la terza generazione ha caratterizzato la generalità delle comunità italo-americane. L’italiano, dunque, non è più “lingua etnica”, né, realmente, “heritage language”. Ci si può allora chiedere se esso possa essere comunque percepito come “lingua identitaria”, “sistema simbolico veicolante valori nei quali riconoscersi” (Vedovelli 2011: 97), in una regione che grazie all’apporto degli immigrati italiani è divenuta famosa nel mondo per la produzione di uve e vini pregiati, cioè di prodotti che come pochi altri simboleggiano la cultura e la tradizione italiana. Offriremo alcuni elementi di riflessione in questo senso, mediante l’analisi dei siti di un campione di aziende vitivinicole della North Coast, nella cui comunicazione commerciale si cercheranno le tracce di una nuova “funzionalità” dell’italiano e le caratteristiche dell’”italianità” ad essa sottesa.
 
 “Wine in my Dino”: Italian and Italian-ness in the online marketing communication of californian wineries on the North Coast
 In this paper some observations are put forward about the language-ethnicity-identity relationship among the descendants of Italian emigrants in California, a State which in 2021 ranked third in the U.S., after New York and Pennsylvania, by number of people declaring an Italian ancestry (over 1.3 million). Particular attention is given to the northern San Francisco Bay area, intensively settled by Italian emigrants since the second half of the 19th century and currently populated by the highest percentages of their descendants within the State. As the results of previous studies have pointed out, the set of positive geographic, demographic and social circumstances characterizing the history of the Italian community in these territories has not succeeded in hindering the process of language shift that has affected all the Italian-American communities by the third generation. Nonetheless, it is worth asking whether Italian is still perceived as an “identity language” a “symbolic system conveying values in which to recognize oneself” (Vedovelli 2011: 97), in a region whose world-famous production of grapes and fine wines is inextricably linked to the contribution of Italian immigrants. Moving from this research question, we offer some preliminary observations concerning the commercial communication of a sample of North Coast wineries, whose websites have been analyzed in order to find out whether and how “Italian-ness” and Italian language are eventually exploited in order to add value to their corporate identity.

Questa ricerca ha lo scopo di studiare alcune questioni legate all’inclusione, elemento caratterizzante il mondo dell’istruzione italiano da più di mezzo secolo. La prima parte dell’articolo ripercorre i principali aspetti dell’inclusione nella scuola italiana e spiega l’importanza delle percezioni dei docenti in relazione al loro agire didattico. La seconda parte interroga le percezioni degli insegnanti di lingua (Italiano, L1, L2) operanti nei diversi ordini di scuola nel campo dell’istruzione inclusiva, un’istruzione volta a fornire una risposta educativa e didattica di alta qualità per tutti gli studenti riconoscendo le diversità (non solo le disabilità) di ogni persona come una risorsa. Dai dati, che sono stati raccolti attraverso un questionario on line distribuito ai docenti di lingua, è emerso che le azioni di formazione obbligatoria intraprese hanno permesso di rafforzare la cultura dell’inclusione nelle scuole italiane, ove tuttavia ulteriori azioni organizzative e didattiche sono possibili per migliorare il livello di inclusione nelle classi. Inclusion in Italian schools: from teacher training to the construction of an inclusive learning environment. the case of language teaching This research focuses on some aspects of inclusion, a perspective that has characterized Italian education for more than half a century. The first part of the article deals with the issues of inclusion in the Italian school and explains the deep connection between teachers' perceptions and their work. The second part investigates the perceptions of language teachers (Italian, L1, L2) in the field of inclusive education, which aims to provide a quality educational response for all students by recognizing the diversity (not only disabilities) of each person as a resource. The data – collected through an online questionnaire – prove that the mandatory training actions carried out last year have strengthened the culture of inclusion in Italian schools, where – however – there is still a need to improve inclusion through further organisational and didactic actions.

L’articolo tratta delle comunità di italiani che si sono formate in diversi paesi dell’Europa centro orientale a partire dal medioevo e dall’età moderna, prestando particolare attenzione a quelle che si sono consolidate nel periodo tra la fine del XIX secolo e la prima metà del XX secolo. Nate spesso in alternativa alle mete tradizionali d’oltreoceano e dell’Europa settentrionale, nel corso del tempo queste comunità hanno conosciuto storie diverse, alcune hanno scelto di tornare in Italia, altre invece sono rimaste, assimilandosi o preservando la propria identità socio-culturale e diventando minoranze etniche. Il periodo del socialismo reale ha rappresentato per molti italiani un periodo di isolamento e di perdita della propria identità. Con la caduta del muro di Berlino, le vicende di queste comunità di “italiani dimenticati” si sono intrecciate ai flussi migratori dei cosiddetti global migrant dei nostri giorni. L’articolo approfondisce quindi caso-studio dell’emigrazione degli italiani in Romania nell’Ottocento, che ha avuto un forte impatto sull’economia e sulla cultura dei due paesi. All’epoca i lavoratori italiani erano richiesti per le loro abilità in vari settori e questo ha creato legami culturali e sociali tra i due paesi la cui eco si riverbera sull’attuale immigrazione romena in Italia.
 
 The socio-cultural identity of Italian communities in Central and Eastern Europe. An introduction
 The article deals with the Italian communities that were formed in various countries of Central and Eastern Europe starting from the Middle Ages and the modern age, paying particular attention to those that consolidated between the late 19th century and the first half of the 20th century. Often born as an alternative to the traditional overseas and northern European destinations, over time these communities have known different destinies, with some choosing to return to Italy, while others have remained, assimilating or preserving their own socio-cultural identity and becoming ethnic minorities. The period of real socialism represented for many Italians a time of isolation and loss of their own identity. With the fall of the Berlin Wall, the events of these communities of “forgotten Italians” intertwined with the migratory flows of the so-called “global migrants” of our day. The article then explores the case study of the emigration of Italians to Romania in the 19th century, which had a strong impact on the economy and culture of the two countries. At the time, Italian workers were in demand for their skills in various sectors, creating cultural and social ties between the two countries whose echoes are reflected in the current Romanian immigration to Italy.

La recepción en los departamentos de Literatura comparada y Humanidades de las universidades estadounidenses, y en gran medida también en las universidades latinomaericanas, inglesas y australianas, del pensamiento de algunos filósofos italianos contemporáneos ha dado lugar a la etiqueta de Italian Theory o Italian Thought. Este fenómeno es particularmente evidente con respecto a autores como Giorgio Agamben, Toni Negri y Roberto Esposito, gracias a los cuales se está redescubriendo la tradición obrerista, desde Tronti hasta Cacciari. También en Italia, especialmente gracias al trabajo de Esposito y su grupo, se está debatiendo la existencia y la naturaleza de un campo de posiciones, en lugar de una corriente en sentido estricto, que gira en torno a lo que en Estados Unidos se define como la “biopolítica italiana”, una reflexión sobre la relación entre las formas de poder y la vida biológica como un carácter sobresaliente de nuestra ontología de la actualidad. Sobre esta base no solo se comparan diferentes tesis sobre la triangulación entre la vida, la política y la historia, sino también diferentes hipótesis sobre su génesis, para algunos relacionada a la historia del obrerismo italiano de los años 60, para otros a una larga duración, que se remonta a la primera génesis de un “pensamiento italiano” en autores como Maquiavelo, Bruno y Vico. A presente resenha compreende uma análise sobre o livro Sport Italia – The Italian Love Affair With Sport, obra que tematiza a trajetória do esporte no contexto italiano, explorando principalmente sua relação com a formação cultural do país. O livro apresenta a relação singular que a Itália apresenta com modalidades esportivas como futebol, automobilismo e ciclismo. O autor aponta que existe uma forte imbricação do fenômeno esportivo com as esferas política e religiosa. Nesse sentido, aponta-se que o livro justifica sua relevância acadêmica por conciliar o estudo da cultura esportiva italiana com análises amparadas por uma considerável quantidade de fontes primárias.

The paper proposes understanding the reading interest in Italian of the thinker Adam Smith (1723-1790), author of the Theory of Moral Sentiments and of the Wealth of Nations from the perspective of the partial review of his library’s catalogue, with approximately 1,000 titles published in English, French, Italian, Greek and Latin. The list of books published in Italian, which Adam Smith purchased for his library and we assume he also read, since he quoted some, represent the Appendix of the present work. From his Italian library, 60 volumes were identified, published between 1547 (B. Castiglione, Il Cortegiano) and 1784 (32 volumes from Parnaso Italiano ovvero Raccolto de’ Poeti Classici Italiani). Just a few years before his death, the great admiror of Italian literature, assiduous reader of Italian poetry, drama, memoirs, correspondence, biographies, jurisprudence, economics, art and history (especially that of Venice and Florence) was still purchasing and reading books from the Italian states, a fact which sketches a personality with a profound cultural and humanities features.

È innegabile il successo del Made in Italy alimentare in paesi come la Germania, uno tra i nostri maggiori importatori, in cui da anni si sono diffusi ovunque tipici locali italiani. Per i tedeschi la nostra cultura culinaria, simbolo di genuinità e convivialità, è talmente apprezzata da avere influenzato le loro abitudini alimentari. Diversi nostri prodotti come la pizza, la pasta, l’espresso fanno ormai parte del patrimonio alimentare e linguistico tedesco, senza dimenticare il gelato, di cui pochi ne conoscono storia e origini. Per tale motivo, tratteremo del successo e della diffusione delle gelaterie italiane in Germania, presentando, infine, una serie di italianismi relativi al mondo della gelateria, a dimostrazione della capacità innovativa ed espansiva della lingua italiana nel tedesco.
 
 Italian food in German language and culture: the contribution of Italian gelato in Germany
 The success of Made in Italy food in countries such as Germany, one of our major importers, is undeniable. For years, typical Italian restaurants have been spreading everywhere. For Germans, our culinary culture, a symbol of authenticity and conviviality, is so appreciated that it has influenced their eating habits. Many of our products such as pizza, pasta, espresso are now part of the German food and linguistic heritage, without forgetting ice cream, of which few know its history and origins. For this reason, we will deal with the success and diffusion of Italian ice cream parlors in Germany, presenting a series of Italianisms related to the world of gelato, demonstrating the innovative and expansive capacity of the Italian language in German.

This work intends to illustrate the methods of using the authentic literary text in the process of spreading Italian, especially in Baghdad where there is a strong propensity to learn the Italian language. The concept of the language that arises from literature is an idea closely linked to the mentality of the Arab learner towards Italian culture: an idea also created by the first Arabisations of literary texts in the early years of the previous century. The research was carried out in Baghdad by two researchers, an Italianist from Baghdad and an Italian mother language linguist, with the aim of bringing together the two sectors in favor of the diffusion of the Italian language. The study also aims to clarify the models from Italian literature most welcomed by those who study Italian in Iraq. In addition to making clear the conceptual phases of what is meant by a literary text in the process of dissemination of a language, and how to expand the literary canon by referring to the corpus of the language of the different genres of Italian literature. Il presente lavoro intende illustrare le modalità d’impiego del testo letterario autentico nel processo di diffusione dell’italiano, soprattutto a Baghdad dove si sta assistendo ad una forte propensione all’apprendimento della lingua italiana. Il concetto della lingua che nasce dalla letteratura è un’idea molto legata alla mentalità dell’apprendente arabo nei confronti della cultura italiana: idea creata anche dalle prime arabizzazioni dei testi letterari ai primi anni del secolo precedente. La ricerca è stata eseguita a Baghdad da due ricercatori, un italianista di Baghdad ed un linguista italiano, allo scopo di riunire i due settori a favore della diffusione della lingua italiana. Lo studio vorrà anche chiarire i modelli dalla letteratura italiana più accolti da chi studia l’italiano in Iraq. Oltre a rendere evidenti le fasi concettuali di che cosa si intende per testo letterario nella disseminazione di una lingua, e come ampliare il canone letterario facendo riferimento al corpus del linguaggio dei diversi generi della letteratura italiana.

The Manifesto serves as a unifying framework for academics, degree courses, departments, schools and universities seeking to institutionalise service-learning into their curriculum. It has been developed by the Italian Universities Network for Service-Learning (UNiSL). It represents the initial outcome of a comprehensive analysis of research findings and documented experiences from Italy and abroad. This document introduces the Italian definition of service-learning in higher education, accompanied by a glossary consisting of nine key terms, each followed by an explanatory description. Its primary objective is to comprehensively understand the approaches, theoretical models and perspectives that characterise the Network. Il Manifesto della Rete delle Università italiane per il Service-Learning (UNiSL). Il Manifesto intende offrire una piattaforma comune per docenti, Corsi di Laurea, Dipartimenti, Scuole o Atenei che intendano istituzionalizzare il service-learning all’interno del proprio curriculum. Il documento è stato elaborato dalla Rete delle UNiversità Italiane per il Service-Learning (UNiSL) e rappresenta un primo risultato raggiunto grazie al confronto sugli esiti delle ricerche condotte e sulle esperienze documentate in Italia e all’estero. In this essay, I try to connect Italian migration and life in Canada through the memory of wood, taking as case studies wooden relics made in Italy and relocated to a country known for its immense forests, as well as wooden artifacts made in Canada by the Italian newcomers. After briefly introducing some general observations on the Italian-Canadian community, employing a Cultural Studies approach, I deal with different experiences undergone by Italians, both as new citizens and, as in the case of Giuseppe Penone, as artists working in Canada. Ranging from unfair treatment during the Second World War to the creation of the Galleria Italia in the AGO in Toronto, wood is a relevant keynote in the construction of a hybridized Italian-Canadian culture. Specific wooden objects, such as trunks and Catholic crosses, are taken into account with reference to a thriving Italian-Canadian literary milieu. In conclusion, I demonstrate that Italian popular culture has also left a trace in the Canadian experience.

Riassunto: Una recente pronuncia del Tribunale di Belluno offre l’occasione per discutere le difficoltà che circondano l’applicazione delle norme italiane di diritto internazionale privato relative alla protezione delle persone maggiorenni che, a causa di un un’infermità o di menomazioni psichiche o fisiche, non sono in grado di provvedere ai propri interessi. Investito di un’istanza per la nomina di un amministratore di sostegno, il Tribunale ha affermato la sussistenza della giurisdizione italiana in ragione del fatto che la beneficiaria della misura di protezione –una cittadina macedone– aveva la propria residenza in Italia; circostanza rilevante, si legge nel provvedimento, tanto ai sensi dell’art. 3 quanto ai sensi dell’art. 9 della legge italiana di diritto internazionale privato (legge n. 218/1995), le norme generali riguardanti, rispettivamente, la giurisdizione contenziosa e quella volontaria. Quanto alla legge applicabile, il Tribunale ha innanzitutto rilevato che l’art. 43 della legge italiana di diritto internazio-nale privato richiama la legge nazionale della persona di cui trattasi, cioè, nella specie, la legge macedone. Si è dunque preoccupato di accertare se le norme macedoni sui conflitti di leggi richiamassero una legge diversa, ed è giunto alla conclusione che queste rinviassero nel caso di specie alla legge italiana. Anche il diritto internazionale privato macedone assoggetta in via ordinaria la protezione degli adulti alla legge del paese di cittadinanza dell’interessato, ma esiste nel sistema macedone una clausola di eccezione di carattere generale che, in un caso come quello considerato, interamente collegato con l’Italia (a parte la cittadinanza della beneficiaria) corregge il richiamo predetto e riconduce la fattispecie sotto il diritto italiano. Da qui, in forza dell’art. 13 della legge italiana di diritto internazionale privato, in tema di rinvio, l’applicabilità del diritto italiano. L’articolata argomentazione che sorregge la pronuncia, in sé convincente, mette in luce le ragioni per le quali l’assetto normativo attuale appare inadeguato a soddisfare gli interessi che oggi dominano la materia, quali risultano in particolare dalla Convenzione delle Nazioni Unite del 2006 sui diritti delle persone con disabilità. La ratifica italiana della Convenzione dell’Aja del 2000 sulla protezione internazionale degli adulti comporterebbe, si sostiene nell’articolo, vantaggi significativi. Parole chiave: disabilità; capacità; supporto nella assunzione di decisioni; competenza giurisdizionale; procedimenti contenziosi e volontari; legge applicabile; rinvio; clausola di eccezione. Abstract: A recent decision by the Tribunal of Belluno provides the opportunity to discuss the difficulties that surround the application of the Italian rules of private international law concerning the protection of adults who, by reason of an impairment or insufficiency of their personal faculties, are not in a position to protect their interests. Seised of a request for the appointment of an “amministratore di sostegno” (a person charged with assisting the adult concerned in the taking of particular decisions), the Tribunal found it had jurisdiction on the ground that the person for whom the protection was sought – a national of Macedonia – resided in Italy. As noted by the Tribunal, this provided a sufficient basis for jurisdiction under both Article 3 and Article 9 of the Italian Statute on Private International (Law No 218 of 1995), concerning jurisdiction over contentious and non-contentious proceedings, respectively. As regards the applicable law, the Tribunal observed at the outset that, pursuant to Article 43 of the Italian Statute, the protection of adults is governed by the law of the State of nationality of the adult concerned, that is, in the circumstances, the law of Macedonia. The Tribunal went on to assess whether the conflictof-laws rules in force in Macedonia refer, in turn, to the law of the different country, and found that they refer the matter back to Italian law. Like the Italian Statute, the Macedonian Statute of Private International Law provides that the protection of adults be governed by the law of nationality of the adult in question. However, the Macedo-nian Statute includes a general exception clause pursuant to which, in the Tribunal’s view, the case must rather be considered to be governed by Italian law, given that the case is con-nected with Italy in all respects, apart from the nationality of the person concerned. Hence, according to Article 13 of the Italian Statute, on renvoi, the application of Italian law. The Tribunal’s complex reasoning, while persuasive in itself, illustrates the reasons why the cur-rent legal landscape hardly suits the interests underlying this area of law, in particular as they result from the United Nations Convention on the rights of persons with disabilities of 2006. The paper argues that the picture would significantly improve if Italy ratified the Hague Convention of 2000 on the international protection of adults. RESUMO: A Educação, no ano de 2020, a partir do início da pandemia de Covid-19, sofreu grande impacto com o fechamento das instituições escolares e consequente transformação das aulas presenciais em remotas. Nos cursos de língua italiana das Universidades Federais da Rede IsF-italiano, fomentadas pela Embaixada Italiana, a mudança do presencial para o remoto foi súbita, ainda no mês de março de 2020, obrigando-nos à transformação abrupta de modalidade de ensino/aprendizagem e de nossas práticas. Como as orientações pedagógicas para a formação continuada dos professores vinham sendo feitas, desde o início do Programa IsF-italiano, em 2016, na modalidade a distância, não estávamos totalmente afastados do mundo virtual, mas essa orientação se dava na direção das aulas em presença física. Com o passar dos meses, sempre na busca de novos conhecimentos, novos meios, recursos e ferramentas tecnológicos e de seus usos, e no compartilhamento constante destes saberes entre os professores, chegamos ao final de 2020, com muitos e relevantes aprendizados.Palavras-chave: Formação continuada de professores de italiano. Since the pedagogical guidelines for the continued formation of teachers had been made, since the beginning of the Programa Italiano-Isf in 2016, in the distance mode, we were not utterly far from the virtual world, yet this orientation was proposed in the direction of the classes in physical presence. Over the months, always searching for new knowledge, new means, technological resources and tools, and their uses, and the constant sharing of this knowledge among teachers, we arrived, at the end of 2020, with many relevant learnings.Keywords: Further training of Italian teachers. Very little is known about Domenico De Vivo (1839-1897). He was a disciple of the Italian linguist Giacomo Lignana and worked as a professor of Russian and English language at the Asiatic College in Naples from 1868 to 1870, and then as an Italian language lecturer at the universities of Dorpat and Odessa in the Russian Empire from 1879 until his death in 1897. De Vivo championed his ideas on language teaching and learning in his books Grammatica della lingua russa [Russian Grammar for Italians] (Dorpat, 1882) and Prakticheskoe rukovodstvo dlya izucheniya ital’yanskogo yazyka [A Practical Guide to Learning Italian] (Odessa, 1886; Odessa, 1890), and in his Dizionario Italiano-Russo. Slovar’ ital’yansko-russkiy [Italian-Russian Dictionary] (Odessa 1894). The purpose of this article is to examine De Vivo’s life and works, which represent the first recorded attempt – in De Vivo’s own words – “to promote Russian language learning in Italy and Italian language learning in Russia.”

L’intervento si propone come una riflessione sull’insegnamento della linguistica nell’ambito dei corsi in Comunicazione interculturale. Come spesso viene sottolineato, anche recentemente in occasione degli “Stati Generali della lingua e della creatività italiane nel mondo” (2021), nell’anno delle celebrazioni per i 700 anni della nascita di Dante, l’italiano è una delle lingue più studiate al mondo. Una delle cause di questo grande interesse sembra essere la curiosità, da parte dei più giovani studenti stranieri, nei confronti delle caratteristiche del Made in Italy. Tuttavia, le imprese italiane non riescono a valorizzare adeguatamente la complessità culturale alla base del prodotto italiano, proprio a causa della incapacità di comunicare in modo efficace gli aspetti che lo caratterizzano. Molto spesso viene dato per scontato che il consumatore conosca il contesto culturale alla base del prodotto, errore che si amplifica quando il consumatore proviene da Paesi geograficamente e culturalmente lontani dal nostro. Le imprese hanno bisogno di narratori che siano in grado di raccontare in un linguaggio comprensibile al consumatore le molte caratteristiche del prodotto italiano. Un’opera di traduzione delicata e complessa che richiede un’approfondita conoscenza sia del nostro sistema di valori che di quello del destinatario della comunicazione. All’aumentare della distanza culturale dei consumatori maggiore dovrà essere l’attenzione alle modalità di comunicazione. Per comunicare nei mercati dei Paesi emergenti, in particolare orientali, è necessario non solo conoscere l’evoluzione dei media digitali, ma anche dominare gli aspetti linguistici e culturali. I testi nelle lingue straniere non possono essere la semplice traduzione dei testi italiani; al contrario, sono delle riformulazioni che tengono conto sia della diversità delle categorie culturali di riferimento delle diverse società, sia delle difficoltà di resa traduttiva degli usi linguistici della lingua italiana. Le università italiane dovrebbero dunque tenere conto della rilevanza della comunicazione interlinguistica e interculturale e valorizzare le potenzialità dei corsi in Comunicazione, altrimenti si corre il rischio di avere laureati in lingue orientali che non conoscono la comunicazione digitale e il marketing e laureati in comunicazione con poca consapevolezza della diversità linguistica e culturale. Communicating Made in Italy in an interlingual and intercultural context This paper aims at analysing the teaching of linguistics in the context of Intercultural Communication training courses. As is often emphasised, even recently on the occasion of the “Stati Generali della lingua e della creatività italiane nel mondo” (2021), in the year of the celebrations for the 700th anniversary of Dante’s birth, Italian is one of the most studied languages in the world. One of the main reasons for this great interest seems to be younger foreign students’ curiosity towards the characteristics of “Made in Italy”. However, Italian companies often fail to properly exploit the cultural complexity underlying Italian products, mainly because of their inability to effectively communicate the aspects that characterise them. Very often, in fact, it is taken for granted that the consumer should know the cultural context underlying the product, an error that is amplified when the consumer comes from countries that are geographically and culturally distant from ours. Companies need storytellers who are able to recount the many characteristics of Italian products in a language that consumers can understand. This is a delicate and complex translation task that requires in-depth knowledge of both our value system and that of the recipient of the communication. As the cultural distance of our consumers increases, more attention will have to be paid to the way we communicate. To communicate in the markets of emerging countries, especially in the Eastern Countries, it is necessary not only to be familiar with the evolution of digital media, but also to master the relevant linguistic and cultural aspects. Texts in foreign languages cannot be mere translations of Italian texts; they must be, instead, reformulations that take into account both the cultural diversity of the different societies and the difficulties in translating the idioms of the Italian language. Italian universities should therefore take into account the relevance of interlinguistic and intercultural communication and enhance the potential of Communication courses, otherwise we risk having graduates in Oriental languages who are not familiar with digital communication and marketing, and Communication graduates with little awareness of linguistic and cultural diversity.

La varietà di base è un sistema «semplice, versatile e molto efficace per la maggior parte degli scopi comunicativi» (Klein e Perdue, 1997: 304). L’obiettivo principale di questo articolo è scoprire se i fenomeni di interferenza dalla L1 in L2 di parlanti arabi sono accettabili nella varietà di base italiana L2 o se dovrebbero essere evitati perché ostacolano la funzionalità comunicativa di BV di italiano L2. Partendo da una premessa sintetica su alcune caratteristiche della lingua araba e su alcune questioni educative riguardanti l’apprendimento dell’italiano da parte degli arabofoni, facciamo alcune osservazioni sulle caratteristiche della BV e infine ci concentriamo sull’analisi di alcuni testi prodotti in italiano L2 di parlanti arabi che rappresentano un sotto corpus di VALICO (Corino e Marello, 2017). Basic variety and interlanguage in Italian L2. Notes on Arab speakers Italian L2 writing The Basic Variety is a “simple, versatile, and highly efficient for most communicative purposes” system (Klein and Perdue, 1997: 304). The main goal of this article is to find out if L1 transfer phenomena in Italian L2 Arabic speakers are acceptable in Basic Variety (BV) Italian L2 or if they should be avoided because they hinder the communicative functionality of BV Italian L2. Starting from a synthetic premise on some characteristics of the Arabic language and some educational issues regarding the learning of Italian by Arabic speakers (Della Puppa, 2007), we make observations on BV and finally we focus on the analysis of some texts that represent a sub corpus of the VALICO corpus (Corino and Marello, 2017) produced in Italian L2 by Arabic speakers.

Il contributo prende in considerazione i nomi commerciali dei formaggi italiani, con l’obiettivo di individuare elementi linguistici e culturali che possano essere integrati nella progettazione e realizzazione di percorsi didattici per l’insegnamento e l’apprendimento dell’italiano come lingua seconda e straniera. I nomi commerciali, evocando la qualità dei prodotti italiani, sono identificati come uno strumento per la diffusione e promozione del Made in Italy e, al contempo, possono rappresentare un elemento rilevante nella ricerca e nell’applicazione glottodidattica, nella prospettiva di favorire lo sviluppo della competenza onomastica, quale parte della competenza lessicale e interculturale. Nello studio si analizzano alcune denominazioni di formaggi italiani per individuarne le caratteristiche linguistiche, semantiche e pragmatiche; tale indagine si basa su un corpus di nomi selezionato a partire da risorse digitali e cartacee, quali schede di prodotti, guide gastronomiche, siti aziendali e istituzionali. Nel lavoro vengono illustrati poi esempi di attività e di percorsi didattici per l’italiano L2 focalizzati sui nomi di formaggi italiani, con l’obiettivo di promuovere la conoscenza del territorio e della cultura gastronomica italiana. THE NAMES OF ITALIAN CHEESES: BETWEEN LANGUAGE, CULTURE AND TERRITORY The contribution considers the trade names of Italian cheese, with the aim of identifying the linguistic and cultural elements that can be integrated in the design and implementation of educational paths for the teaching and learning of Italian as a second and foreign language. Trade names, evoking the quality of Italian products, are identified as a tool for the dissemination and promotion of the Made in Italy. At the same time, they represent a relevant element in the teaching research and practice as they can foster the development of the onomastic competence as part of the lexical and intercultural competence. This study analyses some Italian cheese names in order to identify their linguistic, semantic and pragmatic characteristics, basing the research on a corpus of names selected from digital and paper documents, such as product cards, gastronomic guides, company and institutional websites. The paper then illustrates examples of activities and educational paths for Italian L2 focused on the names of Italian cheese, with the aim of promoting knowledge of the territory and of the Italian gastronomic culture.

Ruberto e Joseph Sciorra, segnano un punto di svolta negli studi sulla cultura dell'America italiana poiché colmano un vuoto nelle ricerche intorno alla diaspora italiana negli Stati Uniti – studi che pure, finalmente, anche in Italia, stanno conoscendo da qualche tempo una discreta fioritura. I saggi raccolti nei due volumi, nel loro complesso, aprono prospettive di ricerca nuove, che rivitalizzano gli Italian American Studies e si pongono al contempo come modello di riferimento per altri ambiti di ricerca che hanno a che fare con le culture e le identità etniche nate per effetto delle migrazioni.

L’articolo fornisce un’introduzione generale alla presenza di parole di origine italiana in giapponese, confrontando la loro frequenza e diffusione con il corpus prevalentemente più ampio di loanword inglesi. Si evidenzia la specializzazione (e la sua evoluzione nel tempo) delle parole italiane all’interno di specifici campi semantici, come la musica, le belle arti e il cibo. L’articolo analizza poi le differenze fonologiche tra le due lingue, che limitano l’adattamento dei suoni e delle sequenze di suoni italiani in giapponese. Nel farlo, propone che queste differenze siano particolarmente enfatizzate dal fatto che le parole d’uso in Giappone sono trascritte utilizzando il sillabario katakana. Questa scrittura richiede che la loro forma fonologica sia adattata per allinearsi alle caratteristiche del sistema di scrittura giapponese, escludendo le caratteristiche fonologiche che non fanno parte della fonologia di questa lingua. I cambiamenti fonologici che le parole italiane subiscono durante il loro adattamento alla fonologia e alla scrittura giapponese sono sinteticamente elencati e descritti. L’articolo si concentra su fenomeni come le sostituzioni di suono, le inserzioni di vocali, le palatalizzazioni indotte dalla coarticolazione, tra gli altri. Inoltre, si presta attenzione ai criteri utilizzati per inserire le parole italiane in giapponese nel sistema di classificazione e trascrizione dell'OIM (Osservatorio degli Italianismi nel Mondo). Italianisms in Japanese. An introduction The paper provides a general introduction to the presence of words of Italian origin in Japanese, comparing their frequency and diffusion to the predominantly larger body of English loanwords. It highlights the specialization (and its evolution over time) of Italian words within specific semantic fields, such as music, fine arts, and food. The paper then analyzes the phonological differences between the two languages, which constrain the adaptation of Italian sounds and sound sequences in Japanese. In doing so, it proposes that these differences are particularly emphasized by the fact that loanwords in Japan are transcribed using the katakana syllabary. This script requires that their phonological form be adapted to align with the features the Japanese writing system can represent, excluding phonological characteristics that are not part of Japanese phonology. The phonological changes that Italian words undergo during their adaptation to Japanese phonology and writing are listed and described in summary. The paper focuses on phenomena such as sound substitutions, vowel insertions, coarticulation-induced palatalizations, among others. Additionally, some attention is given to the criteria used to incorporate Italian loanwords in Japanese into the OIM (Osservatorio degli Italianismi nel Mondo) classification and transcription system.

Resumen: La Ley italiana núm. 47 de 2017, sobre disposiciones en materia de medidas de protección de menores extranjeros no acompañados, constituye el primer texto normativo que contempla de manera unificada la tutela de menas en la UE. Por un lado, esta ley establece un procedimiento multidisciplinar de identificación del menor y de determinación de la minoría de edad (art. 5). Por otro, destaca la figura del «tutor voluntario», institución protectora de los MENAs que llegan al territorio italiano (art. 11). Sin embargo, la falta de coordinación entre los estados miembros amenaza la eficacia práctica de estas previsiones normativas, cuya fuerza vinculante se queda ceñida al territorio italiano. Se plantea, entonces, la necesidad de armonizar las diferentes prácticas estatales a través de una intervención legislativa europea.Palabras clave: MENAs, identificación, tutor voluntario, Italia, Unión Europea.Abstract: The Italian Law n. 47 of 2017 on dispositions upon protection measures of foreign unaccompanied minors, represents the first normative text, which contemplates, in a uniform way, the protection of unaccompanied minors in the EU. On one side, it establishes a multidisciplinary proceeding for the identification of the minor and for the determination of his/her minor age (art. 5). On the other, it stand out the legal figure of a «volunteer guardian», institution that protect unaccompanied minors who arrive at the Italian territory (art. 11). However, the lack of coordination among Member States threats the practice efficacy of those legal provisions, which coercive force is confined through the Italian territory. Tra la popolazione che lascia l’Italia per risiedere all’estero ricopre un ruolo interessante la figura dell’insegnante di italiano come lingua straniera. Tale profilo rappresenta l’Italia e l’italianità non soltanto attraverso il proprio personale patrimonio linguistico e culturale, ma è depositario e portatore privilegiato della lingua e cultura italiana insegnate nelle diverse istituzioni estere. La letteratura scientifica si è interrogata su questa figura professionale in ambito L2 e in ambito LS, ma l’attenzione della ricerca si è concentrata quasi esclusivamente sul portato linguistico-educativo, privilegiando le caratteristiche professionali e formative e occupandosi in secondo piano degli aspetti relativi alla sfera più personale, di “cittadino e cittadina” più che di professionista. Questa ricerca si propone di investigare le caratteristiche che possano definire l’insegnante di italiano a stranieri a tutto tondo, con lo scopo di mettere a fuoco il profilo di chi ha il compito di veicolare la lingua italiana nel mondo. La metodologia della ricerca adottata è stata di tipo qualitativo e ci si è avvalsi di un’indagine realizzata mediante un questionario su Google Moduli, diffuso attraverso social media e inviato a vari/varie insegnanti operanti in istituzioni di diverso ordine e grado. Le risposte ottenute da un campione di centinaia di intervistati permettono di ottenere l’inquadramento di un profilo su cui vale la pena di riflettere in merito alla formazione di taglio glottodidattico e linguistico-educativo in Italia, in modo da avvicinare la formazione accademica alle esigenze professionali e alle aspirazioni individuali in merito alle scelte di vita.
 
 “I studied cinema and didn’t think i would teach Italian”. The Italian language teacher abroad: profiles, training and proposals
 The role of Italian teacher as foreign language that leaves Italy to teach abroad is interesting. This profile represents Italy through the own personal linguistic and cultural heritage, and it is a privileged depositary and bearer of Italian language and culture taught in many foreign institutions. Scientific literature placed question about this professional role in second language and in foreign language, but the attention of research is concentrated almost exclusively on linguistic and educative point of view, first privileging professional and educative features and after taking care of personal feeling as “citizen”. This research proposes to investigate skills of Italian teacher for foreigners, and the aim will be to define the right profile to convey Italian language around the world. The method of this research is qualitative, and survey was done through a questionnaire on Google, widespread on social media and sent to many teachers of various institutions. This research tries to focus on educational linguistics perspectives. Furthermore, obtained answers from hundreds interviewed allow a framing profile, professional needs and individual ambitions of life.

AbstractIn April 1985, architect Giancarlo De Carlo, returning from Argentina to Italy, made a stop in São Paulo, his only visit to Brazil. He gave a lecture to students at a renowned architecture school in São Paulo and granted an interview to some students and young architects. At that time, the Italian architect was already recognized in Latin America, mainly for his editorial work and participation in CIAM and Team X. However, his ideas about modern architecture, participatory design experiences, and interventions in historical Italian cities were not widely known in the Brazilian academic environment and caused a certain impact among the students. The testimony was transcribed in 1985 and published in 1992 in the magazine Óculum under the title «Depoimento de um Arquiteto Italiano - Sobre a Arquitetura do Pós-Guerra (Testimony of an Italian Architect - On Post-War Architecture)». This article presents the transcription of Giancarlo De Carlo’s testimony in Spanish, with a brief introduction.ResumenEn abril de 1985, el arquitecto Giancarlo De Carlo, regresando de Argentina a Italia, hizo una escala en São Paulo, su única visita a Brasil. Impartió una conferencia para estudiantes en una prestigiosa facultad de arquitectura paulista y concedió una entrevista a algunos estudiantes y jóvenes arquitectos. Un sillabo di italiano per stranieri è un modello operativo che definisce la struttura e il contenuto di un corso di lingua destinato a studenti non nativi e rappresenta uno strumento cruciale per la progettazione e l'esecuzione di programmi didattici efficaci. Dopo una sintetica descrizione dei destinatari, dei livelli di competenza, della struttura e dei contenuti dei sillabi disponibili per la lingua italiana si procede con la discussione sulla loro evoluzione nel corso del tempo che riflette i cambiamenti dei pubblici e dei loro bisogni linguistici. Italian syllabi for foreigners: the state of the art This paper aims to provide an overview of the state of the art of Italian syllabi designed for foreign learners. A syllabus for teaching Italian to foreigners is an operational model that defines the structure and content of a language course intended for non-native students. It represents a crucial tool for formulating and implementing effective teaching programs. After a brief description of the target learners, the levels of proficiency, and the structure and contents of existing Italian language syllabi, we proceed with the discussion on their evolution over time which reflects the evolving profiles of learners and their linguistic needs.

Il contributo si propone di esaminare l’uso degli italianismi nelle campagne pubblicitarie (spot tv e sul web, social media, stampa) realizzate per il mercato estero da aziende italiane particolarmente rinomate nel settore dell’alimentare. L’obiettivo principale dell’indagine è quello di analizzare dal punto di vista linguistico le parole (o le espressioni) di origine italiana (ma anche dialettale/regionale) utilizzate dai grandi marchi (brand) del settore nella comunicazione aziendale per promuovere i propri prodotti in quanto iconici della “vera” italianità. L’idea dell’italianità viene veicolata attraverso immagini, paesaggi, brani musicali, ma spesso anche e soprattutto dall’uso di italianismi. Nel nostro caso, ovviamente, termini per lo più della gastronomia che richiamano il made in Italy e il cosiddetto “vivere all’italiana”. Il successo all’estero di prodotti e cibi tipici della cucina italiana, promossi nelle campagne di food marketing (ideate per i mercati internazionali), rafforza e diffonde nel mondo globalizzato la convinzione dell’esistenza di un legame speciale che unisce l’Italia e l’italiano al “bello” e al “buono”. Nel contributo vengono analizzate le strategie linguistiche e comunicative impiegate per la promozione di prodotti alimentari italiani Si va da scelte più “identitarie”, come per gli spot Barilla per il mercato americano, a spot che vogliono in un certo senso meglio integrarsi nei mercati esteri. Nell’ambito della promozione nei social media è frequente il ricorso a un doppio profilo social, l’uno rivolto al mercato nazionale, l’altro al mercato internazionale; spesso però non si tratta di una mera traduzione dei contenuti dall’italiano all’inglese o viceversa. La programmazione e la scelta dei post, la lunghezza e anche il cosiddetto tone of voice possono variare, così come varia la presenza o meno di italianismi, e al contempo la loro resa. Da ultimo si esporranno riflessioni sul packaging diversificato (linguisticamente) per il mercato italiano e il mercato estero. The ‘Bel Paese’: it’s not just cheese! Italianisms in the language of international food marketing This survey report aims at analysing the use of Italianisms in advertising campaigns (TV and web commercials, social media ads, press) conceived for the foreign markets by Italian companies particularly renowned in the food sector. The main objective of the survey was to analyse from a linguistic point of view the words (or expressions) of Italian origin ( also dialectal/regional) used by the major brands of the sector in their advertising campaigns to promote their products as iconic of the ‘true’ Italian character. The idea of Italianness is conveyed through images, landscapes, music, but also with the use of Italianisms in advertising slogans. In our case-study, culinary terms in particular evoke the idea of ‘made in Italy’ and of the ‘Italian way of life’. The success of the Italian cuisine all over the world, as promoted in food marketing campaigns (designed for international markets), reinforces and spreads in today’s globalised world the conviction of the existence of a special bond linking the words Italy and Italian to something ‘beautiful’ and ‘good’. This study therefore analyses the linguistic and communicative strategies used to promote Italian food products, ranging from more ‘identity’ choices, as in the case of the Barilla adverts for the American market, to adverts that in a certain sense prefer to “speak” the language of foreign markets. In the area of social media advertising, the use of a double social profile is frequent, one particularly aimed at the national market, the other meant for an international market; often, however, it is not a mere translation of the content from Italian into English or vice versa. The scheduling and choice of posts, their length and even the so-called tone of voice may vary, as well as the presence or absence of Italianisms. This report also provides comments and observations on (linguistically) diversified packaging for the Italian and foreign markets.

Lo studio della costruzione discorsiva dell’identità è un campo fecondo ‒ e ancora poco esplorato ‒ per comprendere la migrazione. L’integrazione del migrante e dei suoi discendenti nella comunità di destinazione è collegata a rappresentazioni di sé, dell'altro e del mondo, che possono essere comprese meglio attraverso uno studio linguistico-discorsivo. Partendo dall’approccio metodologico della Storia Orale, il gruppo di ricerca “Língua, Identidade e Memória: os italianos no Brasil” realizza interviste con (discendenti di) migranti italiani, incentrate sull’esperienza migratoria diretta o trasmessa dai familiari per investigare in particolare la costruzione dell’italianità degli italo-brasiliani. In questo articolo, analizziamo le occorrenze di “eterogeneità discorsiva mostrata” in cinque interviste con discendenti di italiani arrivati a San Paolo durante la cosiddetta “Grande Emigrazione”. Le domande guida sono: (1) quali caratteristiche vengono associate all’italianità e come vengono presentate nelle occorrenze di eterogeneità mostrata?; (2) cosa possiamo inferire sull’io e sull’italianità dall’incorporazione del discorso altrui in quello degli intervistati? Le ricorrenze evidenziano un’italianità in genere associata a aspetti valutati positivamente, come l’etica del lavoro e la spiccata “allegria”, oltre a una tensione tra enunciatori e italianità.
 “HE SAID HE WAS ITALIAN”: THE SELF AND THE OTHER IN INTERVIEWS OF DESCENDANTS OF ITALIANS FROM SÃO PAULO
 The study of the discursive construction of identity is a fruitful – and a yet under-explored – field for understanding migration. The integration of the migrant and their descendants into the destination community is linked to representations of self, other, and world, which can be better understood through a linguistic-discursive study. Starting from the methodological approach of Oral History, the research group “Língua, Identidade e Memória: os italianos no Brasil” conducts interviews with (descendants of) Italian migrants, focusing on the direct migration experience or transmitted by family members to investigate in particular the construction of Italian-ness of Italian-Brazilians. In this paper, we analyze the occurrences of shown discursive heterogeneity in five interviews with descendants of Italians who arrived in São Paulo during the so-called “Great Emigration”. The guiding questions are (1) what characteristics are associated with Italian-ness and how are they presented in the occurrences of shown heterogeneity?; (2) what can we infer about the self and Italian-ness from the incorporation of others’ discourse into that of the interviewees? The occurrences show Italian-ness generally associated with positively valued aspects, such as work ethic and marked “cheerfulness”, as well as a tension between the subjects and Italian-ness.

In questo saggio ci si propone di analizzare le varie tecniche della formazione delle parole, nelle quali l’inglese gioca un ruolo importante; per tale scopo si esamina il corpus di articoli tratti dalle prime pagine de La Stampa nei primi dieci giorni di gennaio degli anni 1980, 1985, 1990, 1995, 2000, 2005 e 2010.
 L’analisi dei dati rivela che nel campo della formazione delle parole l’inglese gioco un ruolo importante: alcune parole sono state create da parole inglesi con l’aggiunta di un suffisso o un prefisso italiano oppure con la composizione di due elementi (uno italiano e un altro inglese) in un unico significante. L’influsso più significativo è, a nostro avviso, quello che riguarda la modifica strutturale di alcune parole italiane composte con l’ordine ‘Dnte + Dto’ tipico dell’inglese.
 This essay aims to analyze how and where English methods of word formation participates in Italian word formation. Results are achieved by examining a specific corpus made up of articles taken from the first pages of La Stampa and written during the first ten days of January in 1980, 1985, 1990, 1995, 2000, 2005, 2010.
 The analysis reveals how important English is in Italian word formation: new Italian words are be formed by adding prefixes and suffixes to an English word or by combining words. In our opinion, the typical English sequence ‘Dnte+Dnto’ is one of the most significant methods of Italian word formation and it shows how English influences Italian so far.

Questa ricerca si propone di analizzare gli usi sociali riguardanti i nomi di frutta e verdura all'interno dell'attuale società italiana, mostrando come un divario linguistico legato alla pratica linguistica sociale dell'italiano abbia dato loro nuovi significati e nuove funzioni all'interno della comunicazione. Perché infatti, comunicare significa non solo acquisire la conoscenza delle norme della lingua italiana, ma anche la conoscenza delle competenze contestuali in cui un enunciato può o non può essere utilizzato. I nomi di frutta e verdura hanno acquisito un forte carattere connotativo attraverso il quale vengono talvolta utilizzati come insulti. Tuttavia, lo studente algerino che studia l'italiano come lingua straniera conoscerà solo la componente denotata quella dello standard costruito al di fuori del contesto socio-culturale italiano. Abstract This research aims to analyze the social uses regarding the names of fruits and vegetables within current Italian society, showing how a language gap linked to the social linguistic practice of Italian has given them new meanings and new functions within communication. Because in fact, communicating means not only the acquisition of knowledge of the norms of the Italian language, but also the knowledge of the contextual skills in which an utterance can or cannot be used. The names of fruits and vegetables have acquired a strong connotative character through which they are sometimes used as insults. However, the Algerian student who studies Italian as a foreign language will only know the component denoted that of the standard constructed outside the Italian socio-cultural context.

Lo scopo dell’articolo è una breve analisi cognitiva degli eventi di parola italiani realizzanti un costrutto concettuale [TR + AND + PREP + LM], che a livello superficiale consiste nell’infinito italiano andare seguito da un complemento introdotto da una delle preposizioni italiane a oppure in. Durante la ricerca, diversi modi in cui la scena menzionata si costruisce vengono comparati con esempi analoghi, la cui fonte risiede in altre due lingue romanze, ossia lo spagnolo ed il francese. Riteniamo che questo tipo d’analisi permetta di tracciare sia similitudini che discrepanze nella concettualizzazione della realtà extralinguistica fra gli utenti dei tre sistemi linguistici, che sono apparentemente considerati molto simili. L’analisi viene compiuta sulla base della grammatica cognitiva di R. Langacker, con un focus particolare sulla relazione traiettore-landmark, e sulla teoria della metafora concettuale di M. Johnson e G. Lakoff.
 
 Comparative analysis of conceptual constructs [and + a] and [and + in] based on selected examples from Italian, Spanish and French: a cognitive study
 The article is a brief cognitive analysis of Italian word events realizing a conceptual construct [TR + AND + PREP + LM], which at the surface level consists of the Italian infinitive andare followed by a complement introduced by one of the Italian prepositions a or in. During the research, different ways in which the mentioned scene is constructed are compared with similar examples whose source is in two other Romance languages, namely Spanish and French. This type of analysis allows to trace both similarities and discrepancies in the conceptualization of extralinguistic reality among users of the three language systems, which are apparently considered very similar. The analysis was performed on the basis of R. Langacker’s cognitive grammar with a particular focus on the trajector-landmark relationship, and M. Johnson and G. Lakoff’s theory of conceptual metaphor.

This essay documents the diffusion of the Italian language and culture in Aotearoa-New Zealand, an officially bilingual (English and Māori), as revealed by the double name, and multicultural society. By adopting an eclectic approach that combines sociolinguistics, language teaching methodology, and cultural anthropology, my paper is a micro-ethnography performed on a group of five women of Italian origin with different levels of competency in Italian as their second language. This group of Kiwis – as New Zealanders frequently refer to themselves – ranged age from 16 to 68 and reside in greater Auckland, New Zealand’s most populous city. Their testimonies were collected through a series of face-to-face semi-structured qualitative interviews and based on several sessions of participant observation involving immersion and interaction in the socio-cultural environment of the informants. Notwithstanding their small number, the stories collected in this research disclose a significant ethnographic relevance as they testify to key aspects of Italianness in the social and historical context of New Zealand. In line with the sociolinguistic theories on the circulation of Italian in the world, on the motivations underpinning its learning and on the typology of speakers, I specifically addressed the following topics: Italian as a language of migration, Italian as a language of culture, Italian taught at university, Italian as part of a fluid and transnational multi-identity, and Italian in the global market.
 
 Due metà dello stesso Kiwi: lingua e cultura italiana tra i neozelandesi di origine italiana 
 Il seguente saggio documenta la diffusione della lingua e della cultura italiana in Aotearoa - Nuova Zelanda, paese ufficialmente bilingue (inglese e Māori), come rivela il doppio nome, e multiculturale. Attraverso un approccio eclettico che combina sociolinguistica, glottodidattica e antropologia culturale, l’articolo si propone come micro-etnografia condotta su un gruppo di cinque donne di origine italiana con diversi livelli di competenza in italiano come lingua seconda. Questo gruppo di informatrici Kiwi – questo è il nome con il quale i/le neozelandesi si riferiscono comunemente a sé stessi/e – ha un’età compresa tra i sedici e i sessantotto anni e risiede nell’area metropolitana di Auckland, la città più popolosa della Nuova Zelanda. Le loro testimonianze sono state raccolte tramite una serie di interviste qualitative semi-strutturate, condotte di persona, e diverse sessioni di osservazione partecipante che hanno comportato l’immersione e l’interazione nell’ambiente socio-culturale delle informatrici. Nonostante il loro numero limitato, le storie raccolte in questa ricerca dimostrano una significativa rilevanza etnografica poiché testimoniano aspetti chiave dell’italianità nel contesto storico-sociale neozelandese. In linea con le teorie sociolinguistiche sulla circolazione dell'italiano nel mondo, sui motivi dell’apprendimento e sulla tipologia dei parlanti, ho esaminato nello specifico i seguenti argomenti: l’italiano lingua di migrazione, l’italiano lingua di cultura, l’italiano insegnato all’università, l’italiano come parte di una pluri-identità fluida e transnazionale e, infine, l’italiano nel mercato globale.

L’articolo intende fornire alcuni esempi di applicazione didattica della ricca produzione dialettale e neodialettale italiana rivolta a discenti italiano LS/L2. Attraverso una serie di proposte che riguardano un dialetto settentrionale (friulano del poeta Amedeo Giacomini), centrale (romagnolo del poeta Giovanni Nadiani) e meridionale (un pezzo classico quale A livella di Totò), l’articolo intende mostrare le potenzialità di una didattica sui dialettali, tra le risorse che da sempre incuriosiscono chi impara l'italiano, soprattutto a un livello B2-C1. 
 
 Dialectising you learn. Dialect materials for teaching Italian LS
 The article aims to provide some examples of didactic application of the rich Italian dialectal and neodialectal production in teaching Italian SL/L2 learners. Through a series of proposals concerning a northern dialect (Friulian by the poet Amedeo Giacomini), central (Romagna by the poet Giovanni Nadiani) and southern (a classic piece such as A livella by Totò), the article intends to show the potential of a work on dialects, among the resources that have always intrigued those who learn Italian, especially at a B2-C1 level.
