Abstract:
The present work focuses on the automatic generation of a written text in Italian language starting from glosses of a fable in Italian Sign Language (LIS). After a detailed overview on LIS and Natural Language Generation, the reader is introduced to our experiment on generation and to the machine that made it possible, i.e. the GENLIS generator. We decided to generate text from a LIS version of the fable “The Tortoise and the Hare”, which was annotated manually. In order to achieve our goal, we converted glosses into Prolog strings to be fed to the generator. In this thesis, we present the generation mechanism, which is based on a set of algorithms that allow the generator to work properly. Furthermore, I compare the generated output with our target translation of the fable and identify some of its flaws. Finally, I specify the main problems encountered in the generation process. This analysis led us also to demonstrate that LIS is a true, complex language with specific characteristics and not some sort of gestural system with no linguistic status.

Abstract:
The first part of this dissertation aims to describe the role of the Italian culture in the United States of America. The research was conducted at Queens College, City University of New York. The materials collected during this research show that there are several factors that motive students to study Italian as a Foreign Language. Besides the importance of literature, music, art and history linked to Italy, other factors known as 3Fs can be considered influential: Fashion, Food and Ferrari. Cinema is also investigated as relevant. The focus of the dissertation is Food and how it can influence students who are learning Italian as a FL. The second part is dedicated to another research that was conducted at the Cultural Association of the Molise Region in New York. Cooking during Italian lessons was used to verify the acquisition of grammatical concepts previously introduced to the students. The class was comprised of six adults, ranging from beginner to pre-intermediate levels. As a result, half of the students had fully acquired the concepts after the cooking lesson. In fact, practical activities can be disguised as playful and helpful: students learn the language while doing something practical and they forget that they are learning. Their motivation is stronger not only because they are improving their Italian skills, but they are also learning how to cook traditional Italian dishes. In conclusion, the positive results obtained by the research demonstrate that Italian teaching materials about Food, specifically recipes, can be used to increase the acquisition of an already familiar topic.

Abstract:
This study is set within a national context which pointed to "a drastic decay of dialects" on the Italian peninsula, and a broader European one which indicated a resurgence of minority languages on the continent. It investigates the ideologies and practices of child language socialization of speakers belonging to a small multilingual community in the Italian Alps to determine if the community is experiencing a dialect revival, and if so, what forms such a process is taking. My analysis focuses on (1) community members' explicit theories on the community codes' values, functions, and roles in child language socialization; (2) caretaker-child interactions in Italian-oriented homes and in the schools. After years of convergence towards Italian, the community is witnessing a resurgence of its local vernacular Nones. The revival phenomenon is sustained by overt and covert communicative practices. The former include explicit support of the dialect as marker of a rediscovered cultural heritage and local identity, and the promotion of Italian-Nones bilingualism as a cognitive advantage. The latter include practices whereby in Italian contexts speakers switch to the dialect to index authority, community-mandated rights and responsibilities, and both positive and negative affect. Also, the community has witnessed the rise of "prestigious practices" which elevate the status of Nones from dialect to language. These consist in speakers' use of the dialect in more prestigious domains and for higher order functions that in a recent past were strictly reserved to Italian. Finally, the sum of overt and covert practices contribute to a resurgence of the dialect supporting its vitality and transmission.

Abstract:
This dissertation presents a systematic analysis on the syntax of nominal expressions in LIS (Italian sign language). Combining three apparently irreconcilable theoretical frameworks, namely linguistic typology, generative linguistics, and sociolinguistics, new insights on the structure of LIS nominal domain are offered. In this thesis, three empirical studies are presented. The first one is a quantitative study on the distribution of LIS nominal modifiers with respect to the noun. The second one is a quantitative study on the duration of these modifiers. The findings resulting from these two studies, both based on the investigation of corpus data through statistical computing, reveal that the variation instantiated in LIS nominal expressions display a considerable amount of linguistic variation. However, this variation is far from being random since it appears highly constrained by the syntactic options that natural languages allow. The third study focuses on the syntactic behavior characterizing cardinal numerals in LIS. In particular, this study shows how quantitative and qualitative procedures can be fruitfully combined together in order to provide a clearer picture of the issue under investigation. The analysis of corpus data and elicited data specifically collected for this thesis reveals that the distribution of cardinals is highly sensitive to the fine-grained distinction between definite and indefinite nominal expressions. All these aspects are accounted for in a syntactic analysis showing that the constraints observed in crosslinguistic variation are also applicable to languages instantiating intralinguistic variation like LIS.

Abstract:
The present dissertation investigates the existence and realization of processes conveying features of diminutive, augmentative, endearment and pejorative in Italian Sign Language (LIS). Within the theoretical background of the Cartographic Project and Linguistic Typology, this work is also an attempt to demonstrate whether the theory of the extended projection of the NP proposed by Cinque (2005, 2015) accounts for LIS as well, by observing if the order of LIS constituents respects the universal one. For the investigation, I developed a research involving three LIS native signers in tasks of elicitation, narration and grammaticality judgements and I analysed a corpus of 22 tales produced in LIS by LIS native signers. The objective was to see if those features usually defined by the adjectives big, small, cute, ugly, could be incorporated in the sign of the noun and conveyed without the articulation of the sign of the adjective. The results demonstrated that non-manual markers and classifiers have a main role in these processes and that their articulation respects the position of their functional projections within the syntactic structure, supporting my hypothesis to concern NNMs conveying features of diminutive, augmentative, endearment and pejorative as heads of dedicated functional projections. Finally, I confirm that processes of evaluative morphology constitute a morphological type while providing examples from other sign languages: ASL, LSF, ISL, BSL, DGS, PJM, AdaSL.

Dans cette thèse, j’étudie le domaine des mots composés dans les langues des signes. La composition a été décrite comme étant une stratégie d’enrichissement du lexique des langues des signes, même dans des cas de langues des signes émergentes. J’aborde ce sujet au travers de trois approches principales : typologique/empirique, théorique et expérimentale.Dans la partie typologique/empirique, j’apporte une description approfondie des mots composés dans deux langues signées : la LIS et la LSF. Dans ce domaine, ma principale contribution est de proposer une typologie plus exhaustive des classificateurs en y incluant les formes simultanées.Dans la partie théorique, j’apporte une description formelle de la manière de dériver la typologie complète des mots composés présents dans ces deux langues.Mon objectif premier est de montrer que les mots composés peuvent être dérivés de différentes manières selon leurs propriétés, et que la dérivation morpho-syntaxique n’est pas le seul processus qui affecte les options combinatoires de composition. Les processus post-syntaxiques, et particulièrement la linéarisation, doivent avoir au minimum accès à des représentations partielles afin de distinguer les formes qui doivent être épelées de façon séquentielle et simultanée.Dans la partie expérimentale, je cherche à savoir si la réduction phonologique est une condition suffisante pour identifier les mots composés dans les langues signées. Ma principale contribution a été de montrer que l’importation des critères d’une langue des signes à une autre doit être réalisée avec une extrême précaution
In this dissertation, I investigate the domain of compounds in sign languages. Compounding has been documented as a key strategy to enrich the lexicon of sign languages even in situations of emergent sign languages. I address this topic with three main angles: typological/empirical, theoretical and experimental. In the typological/empirical part, I offer a thorough description of compounds in two sign languages: Italian and French Sign Language (LIS and LSF). I offer a refined and more comprehensive typology of compounds, in which classifiers and simultaneous forms are also taken into account.In the theoretical part, I provide a formal account of how to derive the whole typology of compounds found in LIS and LSF. I show i) that compounds can be derived in multiple ways depending on their morphosyntactic properties and ii) that morphosyntactic derivation is not the only process that affects the combinatorial options of compounding. Post-syntactic processes, especially linearization, have to have access to at least partial representations in order to distinguish between forms that have to be spelled out either sequentially or simultaneously.In the experimental part, I investigate whether phonological reduction is a sufficient condition to identify compounds in SL. I show that importing criteria from one SL to another can be done, but with extreme caution

O pedido, no âmbito da Pragmática cross-cultural, tem sido estudado por diversos pesquisadores, tanto por ser um dos exemplos mais claros de que é possível fazer coisas com as palavras, como prevê a Teoria dos Atos de Fala (Austin, 1962), quanto por seu potencial de ameaçar a face positiva de quem o profere e negativa de quem o recebe, conforme postularam Brown e Levinson (1987). Tendo em vista esses pressupostos, a pesquisa aqui apresentada teve o intuito de investigar a percepção que aprendizes brasileiros de italiano e falantes nativos dessa língua têm da cortesia linguística presente em pedidos realizados em italiano, a fim de verificar se há semelhanças ou disparidades nas percepções relatadas pelos diferentes grupos e quais são os elementos que podem motivar essas percepções. Para tal, uma amostra de oito pedidos, gravados em áudio e vídeo, foi apresentada aos informantes brasileiros e italianos, que deveriam indicar, em uma escala de 1 a 5, qual o nível de cortesia neles presente, além de indicar, em um conjunto de 19 variáveis, o quanto elas influenciaram a percepção relatada. O corpus coletado é composto por 40 aprendizes brasileiros e 51 italianos e, a partir da análise dos dados, concluímos que i) quatro dos oito pedidos avaliados pelos informantes suscitaram percepções análogas e, consequentemente, outros quatro pedidos causaram percepções diversas; ii) algumas variáveis (modificadores de força ilocucionária e aspectos como a entoação) tiveram impacto significante sobre a percepção da cortesia em geral e, quanto a cada pedido em específico, que nem sempre a presença de modificadores de força ilocucionária influencia a percepção da cortesia, podendo também a ausência desses elementos ter um impacto positivo ou negativo. Também concluímos que uma grande quantidade de modificadores não necessariamente resulta em uma alta percepção da cortesia.
The request, in the context of cross-cultural Pragmatics, has been studied by several researchers, both for being one of the clearest examples of the possibility of doing things with words, as predicted by the Theory of Speech Acts (Austin, 1962), as well as for its potential to threaten the positive face of the speaker and the negative face of the hearer, as postulated by Brown and Levinson (1987). In view of these presuppositions, the research presented here was intended to investigate how Brazilians learners of Italian and native speakers of this language evaluate the linguistic politeness in requests made in Italian, in order to verify if there are similarities or disparities in the perceptions reported by the different groups and what are the elements that can motivate these perceptions. To do this, a sample of eight requests, recorded in audio and video, was presented to Brazilian and Italian informants, who were asked to indicate, on a scale of 1 to 5, the level of politeness of those speech acts, besides indicating, in a set of 19 variables, how much they influenced the reported perception. The corpus collected is composed of 40 Brazilians and 51 Italians and, based on data analysis, we concluded that i) four out of eight requests evaluated by the informants presented similar perceptions and, consequently, four other requests caused different perceptions; ii) some variables (modifiers and aspects such as intonation) had a significant impact on the perception of politeness in general. For each specific request, we concluded that the presence of modifiers does not always influence the perception of politeness, and that the absence of such elements may also have a positive or negative impact. Finally, it was possible to notice that a large number of modifiers does not necessarily result in a high perception of politeness.

Abstract:

This research study was conducted with the intention of determining the most common errors that occur in the development of Italian oral language skills among 102 students participating in a 90/10 (90% in Italian/10% in English) dual language program offered at a California public elementary school. The 90/10 program breaks down instruction as follows: Kfirst grade 90% instruction in the target language/10% in English; in second grade 80/20; in third grade, 70/30; in fourth, 60/40, and in fifth, 50/50. Although the ratios change, the program is officially known as 90/10. The students in this study, a mixed group ranging from first to fifth grade, observed a series of pictures representing a story, which they then had to orally tell in their own words. The oral presentations were recorded and then transcribed word by word, including pauses and hesitations. The productions were then analyzed in depth, with special attention given to hesitations, the insertion of phrases and/or words in English, errors with lexical choice and grammatical errors (auxiliary verb choice, as well as the usage of subjects, verbs, and pronouns). The results from this study demonstrate that the age of the student influences second language oral fluency. In general, students with more schooling tended to commit fewer errors in their oral production. However, some categories of errors did not seem to be affected by the length of time students had been enrolled in the program. It is hypothesized that some errors persist due to the decreased amount of Italian instruction that characterizes the upper years in the program.

Abstract:
This thesis is broadly concerned with how an ethnic group defines itself through the medium of the press. It contends that newspapers do more than simply 'reflect' the experience of ethnic groups, they in fact help to 'construct' ethnic identity.
The specific focus of this study is the Italian language press and its attempts to shape the ideals of italianita of Italian migrants in Canada and Australia in the immediate post-war period. This work is based on two newspapers, Montreal's Il Cittadino Canadese and La Fiamma published in Sydney, New South Wales. All available editions from the decade 1947 to 1957 are examined in order to determine which symbols and causes were used to promote Italian ethnic cohesiveness.
In the course of this thesis, it is argued that La Fiamma used religion as the basis of its ideal of italianita, while the Italo-Canadian paper Il Cittadino Canadese made the issue of Italian political representation in Canadian government structures the basis of its quest to unite Italian migrants into an ethnic 'community'. Some possible reasons for the difference in focus between the two newspapers are presented in the conclusion. Also, suggestions are made for future comparative research between Italian ethnic communities in Canada and Australia which may help to better explain the differences laid bare in this paper.

Abstract:
This study investigates the impact of learning Standard Italian among Italian Australian dialect speakers. More specifically, it examines the Italian language learning experiences of bilingual Italian Australians who grew up speaking an Italian dialect at home and studied Italian in formal contexts. It also investigates the possible effect that formal Italian language instruction, and other influences, have had on their current language use. Despite the fact that in Australia the Italian language has been taught in various programs over many years and to a large number of learners who are Italian dialect speakers, little research has been conducted in this area. This study is informed by both social constructionist and phenomenological frameworks and draws on research in the areas of sociolinguistics and second language learning and instruction. The research was conducted in Adelaide, South Australia, on a sample of ten Italian Australians who were brought up in Australia speaking an Italian dialect, using a mixed method approach. Pre-interview questionnaires and semi structured interviews were used to obtain data which was analysed through a thematic approach. From this, themes emerged in the areas of language learning experiences and the participants’ perceived impact that such experiences, and other influences, have had on their language use.The findings show a range of learning experiences among participants. While a small number identify areas where their Italian instruction has had an impact, most do not believe in such an impact on their language use. All perceive that other influences, such as family networks, have had a more significant impact.

Lo scopo della mia tesi è presentare al lettore un’analisi delle metodologie di insegnamento e dell’apprendimento della lingua inglese in un istituto tecnico italiano – dove ho svolto lo stage come assistente degli insegnanti di inglese – e come questo viene percepito dagli studenti stessi. Il primo capitolo introduce il quadro teorico degli studi sull’apprendimento e l’insegnamento delle lingue straniere, focalizzandosi in particolare sugli aspetti di cui ho tenuto conto durante il mio periodo di osservazione. Il secondo capitolo presenta le attività che ho svolto, il materiale che ho usato e il questionario finale proposto agli studenti per raccogliere i loro pensieri sugli stessi aspetti. Il terzo capitolo presenta i risultati delle mie attività di osservazione e del questionario, attraverso un confronto diretto classe per classe. Il quarto capitolo riassume, risponde alle domande di partenza e conclude il lavoro.

Abstract:
This thesis deals with gender construction in the Italian parliament. The increase of female politicians in the public sphere in Italy and throughout the world justifies the investigation of their language use, in relation to that of their male counterparts. In this project, I analyse the use of three linguistic phenomena: 1. forms of address; 2. Noi forms; and 3. Violence metaphors. The common aim of the investigations into these three linguistic phenomena is to examine the construction of gender at its intersection with political roles in 13 parliamentary debates on the topic of violence against women occurred in the Camera dei Deputati (Lower Chamber) during Parliament XVI, which ran from 2008-2011. The findings concerning the use of institutionalised forms of address reveal that both gender groups still tend to mostly use masculine unmarked terms when addressing female politicians (in singular and plural forms). More positively but still not wide-spread, the analysis shows that (semi-) marked forms are slowly appearing, e.g. Signora Ministro, where only the (marital) status form is replaced with the feminine form. The findings for noi forms indicate that both male and female MPs tend to associate themselves with other politicians. In addition, female MPs also tend to construct themselves as ‘female politicians’ and as ‘women’, perhaps in a quest for visibility and legitimation of their position in the Camera dei Deputati (and) in a male chauvinist society. The investigation of Violence metaphors is interesting for their relation to the topics of debate and the gender bias that describes these metaphors as ‘masculine’ (Philip, 2009; Koller, 2004; Koller & Semino, 2009). Female MPs employ more Violence metaphors than their male counterparts in these debates. The investigation of Ground Confrontation metaphors further reveals that the scenarios constructed by female and male politicians equally present violence as an abstract phenomenon for which no one seems to be responsible.

Abstract:
This study is a comparative analysis of the syntax of adverbials in Chinese and Italian in the context of an anti-symmetric view of clause structure. Through a detailed investigation of selected sentence adverbs, aspect adverbs and manner adverbs, various similarities and differences between Italian and Chinese are identified. Chinese adverbials are mostly pre-verbal (with a few exceptions) while in Italian they can also appear after the verb. Such differences are plausibly accounted for through the verb-movement analysis: the Italian verb raises, overtly, to the left of adverbs, probably as a consequence of the rich inflectional morphology, while in Chinese the verb cannot overtly raise out of VP, due to the scarce inflectional morphology of the language. The traditional analysis of adverbs as adjuncts, coupled with directionality parameters, is not needed in order to explain the facts. The study shows that when adverbs such as the Italian adverb presto and the corresponding Chinese adverb kuai (‘quickly’) appear in different syntactic positions, they may receive different interpretations. This fact cannot be properly captured by the adjunct analysis, but it is predicted by the F-Spec hypothesis, according to which each class of adverbs occupies a specific syntactic position within the functional projections above VP. The double analysis of Italian bene (‘well’), which can be an adverb but can also (in specific cases) be interpreted as a predicate, is a clear example in support of the functional vs. predicational nature of adverbs, a fact also noted in the predicational analysis of the Chinese post-verbal V-deconstructions. Finally, Italian adverbs like stranamente (‘oddly’) are ambiguous between a clausal and a manner reading when appearing in post-verbal / pre-object position, while in Chinese the corresponding adverb qiguai shows the same ambiguity in the pre-verbal position. This, again, is associated with the possibility in Italian, but not in Chinese, for the verb to raise to the left of adverbs. Overall, the study supports the view that several word order and interpretative properties which differ between languages can be reduced to a few abstract syntactic principles.

Ziel der vorliegenden Untersuchung ist die Beschreibung der Varietäten der italienischen Sprache, wie sie von in Berlin lebenden italienischen Auswanderern gesprochen werden. Die Stichprobe, die sich aus 64 Informanten zusammensetzt, wurde ausgehend von deren Bildungsgrad in zwei Gruppen aufgeteilt, die wiederum nach erster und zweiter Generation unterteilt wurden. Die insgesamt vier Gruppen bestehen aus jeweils 16 Informanten. Die Analysen erfolgten auf soziolinguistischer und sprachlicher Ebene. Für die erste Untersuchung wurde eine Studie zum Phänomen des language shift durchgeführt, bei der die Einstellungen zu den Sprachen im Repertoire der Gemeinschaft untersucht wurden. Die Analyse ergab zum einen, dass es zwei verschiedene Sprachgemeinschaften mit zwei Repertoires gibt, die sich nicht vollkommen überschneiden, und zum anderen, dass ein unterschiedlicher Grad der Integration innerhalb der deutschen Gemeinschaft festzustellen ist. Die soziolinguistischen Ergebnisse wurden durch die anschließende Analyse der sprachlichen Merkmale bestätigt, die die beiden Gruppen der ersten Generation nach dem Bildungsgrad und der unterschiedlichen Dialektverwendung unterscheiden. In der Gruppe mit niedrigem bis mittlerem Bildungsgrad zeigt sich eine Verschiebung von der varietà popolare hin zur Umgangssprache, während in der Gruppe mit mittlerem bis hohem Bildungsgrad eine Verschiebung vom neo-standard hin zur Umgangssprache erkennbar ist. Interessant ist jedoch die Analyse der jeweiligen Gruppen der zweiten Generation, aus der – unabhängig von der Herkunft der Eltern – viele gemeinsame Merkmale ersichtlich werden. Dies lässt sich tendenziell durch den längeren Kontakt mit der deutschen Gesellschaft erklären, der zu einem Rückgang des Italienischgebrauchs führt.
The present dissertation investigates the varieties of spoken Italian used by members of the Italian community in Berlin from a sociolinguistic perspective. The aim is to determine whether there are different Italian linguistic communities in Berlin and how they differentiate from one another. The sample consists of 64 participants, 32 from the first generation and 32 from the second, further divided according to their educational degree. The study takes into account the relationship between linguistic codes and domains of language use, whilst exploring the language shift phenomenon. The qualitative analysis of the data reveals that two linguistic communities with two specific repertoires have gradually taken shape. This is confirmed by the linguistic analysis of the Italian varieties spoken by the participants. The educational degree and the different use of the heritage Italo-Romance dialect of the informants emerged as sociolinguistic variable. The variety of the first generation with low educational degree and extensive use of the dialect shares linguistic features both of the “italiano popolare“ (i.e. the variety of Italian spoken by those individuals who learned as their native language an Italo-Romance dialect) and of the colloquial variety of Italian. On the contrary, the variety of the first generation with a high educational degree and a restricted use of the dialect shares linguistic traits both of the neo-standard and of the colloquial variety. Findings of the second generation groups indicate that the parent's background seems to have a marginal effect on the linguistic variety. This could be due to the second generation participants being exposed to the German society for a longer period of time, causing a decline in their competency of the Italian language.

Abstract:
The object of study of this thesis is the linguistic input in textbooks of Italian as a foreign language (FL). The intent is to study whether the linguistic changes, observed in contemporary Italian, have become part of the Italian offered as input to the learners. To identify the variety of language presented in the textbooks, some features of contemporary linguistic changes were chosen as verifiable indicators. These features, listed by Sabatini (1985: 155) as a basic part of "italiano dell’uso medio", and by Berruto (1987: 62) as part of "neostandard", are not occasional changes but are features that are gradually expanding and stabilizing into Italian standard (Sobrero 2005). A corpus consisting of 38 Italian textbooks published in Sweden and 8 in Italy in the years 2000-2012 were used to verify the manifestation of these features. The results show that the presence of neostandard features in the textbooks of Italian FL is conditioned, at first, by the rate of acceptance of those features by the linguistic norm. Thus, features that are nowadays commonly considered as normative have a high number of occurrences in the corpus. This is the case concerning lui, lei, loro as subject pronouns, the use of gli instead of loro, the use of the present tense for the future and the use of temporal che. On the other hand, features that are not considered as normative have no or very few occurrences. This is the case with gli instead of le and the use of imperfetto ipotetico. Secondly, the presence of the neostandard features in textbooks is conditioned by the instructive function of the textbooks, which shapes the typology of input introduced. Thus, occurrences of features such as cleft clauses and dislocations are mainly presented in authentic texts, oral texts, or introduced explicitly, but are rare or absent in textbooks characterized by simplified language.

In una società in cui la migrazione è in costante aumento, la capacità di imparare una nuova lingua è diventata essenziale. Tuttavia, una fetta considerevole della popolazione migrante possiede una scolarizzazione insufficiente o nulla, perciò non solo non possiede le abilità tecniche e strumentali legate alla lettura e alla scrittura, ma dispone di un approccio diverso a tutti gli aspetti dell’apprendimento (dal come tenere in mano una penna alle differenze cognitive in termini di capacità di memorizzazione, astrazione o categorizzazione). L’alfabetizzazione fornisce gli strumenti tramite i quali adattarsi a una nuova società in cui la comunicazione scritta è fondamentale in ogni relazione ed è ormai accertato come modifichi il cervello di un apprendente non solo in senso cognitivo, ma anche anatomico. Essa inoltre, in una società altamente testualizzata, rappresenta un mezzo per il miglioramento del proprio livello di vita, fornendo gli strumenti per accedere al mondo del lavoro, o per poter conoscere e far rispettare i propri diritti. Molti studi hanno dimostrato come il cervello di un analfabeta lavori diversamente da quello di un individuo alfabetizzato, elaborando in modo diverso le informazioni e, quindi, il linguaggio e la comunicazione. È pertanto essenziale comprendere come insegnare al meglio una lingua seconda ad apprendenti analfabeti, prendendo in considerazione le conoscenze offerteci da scienze come la neurolinguistica e la psicolinguistica nel campo dell’apprendimento da parte di adulti analfabeti. Questo elaborato intende discutere le implicazioni glottodidattiche delle nozioni delle neuroscienze riguardanti l’apprendimento di una seconda lingua da parte di adulti analfabeti in lingua madre. In a society where migration is constantly increasing, the ability to learn a new language has become substantial. Nevertheless, a considerable proportion of the migrant population has received little or no education and thus not only lacks technical reading and writing skills, but has a different approach to all aspects of learning (e.g. from how to hold a pen to the cognitive differences in terms of memorization, abstraction or categorisation). Literacy provides the tools to better adjust to a new society in which written communication is essential to every kind of relationship and it is proven to change the brain both in cognitive and anatomical terms. Moreover, in a highly textualized society, literacy represents a way to improve one’s living conditions, providing the tools to access the employment market or to know one’s rights and have them respected. Many studies have demonstrated how the illiterate brain works differently from the literate one, having a diverse way to process information and, therefore, language and communication. For this reason, it is of utmost importance to understand how to best teach a second language to illiterate adults, by taking into account the knowledge that sciences such as neuropsychology and neurolinguistic offer on the topic of language acquisition in illiterate learners. This dissertation intends to discuss the teaching implications of the findings of neurosciences in the field of second language learning by adult illiterates in their first language.

Esta pesquisa visa a estudar, na língua italiana, a ocorrência de um tipo particular de construção, a saber, as construções verbais paratáticas (CVPs, daqui em diante). As construções focalizadas nesta pesquisa formam-se a partir de dois ou mais verbos flexionados, conectados ou não pela conjunção e, como por exemplo: se ne va e piange (vai-se chora), prendo e me ne vado (pego e vou-me embora). Nossa investigação inicial consistiu na documentação destas construções a partir de corpora do italiano. Todavia, considerando que o estudo das CVPs é incipiente no italiano, sua descrição e análise ainda carecem de um estudo exaustivo, que vise à análise de sua estrutura e função. Desse modo, nosso objetivo é aprofundar o trabalho iniciado em nível de iniciação científica, com foco nas seguintes questões: estatuto categorial das CVPs como um tipo de predicação complexa não previsível no âmbito da gramática do italiano contemporâneo (a saber, serialização verbal); e gramaticalização, tendo em vista os processos de mudança envolvidos na emergência dessa construção. Nossa hipótese é a de que as CVPs sejam consideradas como construções de foco. Adotamos os pressupostos teóricos da gramática funcional, visto que esta pesquisa tem por objetivo estudar a língua em uso. Dentro do funcionalismo, cabe estudar outros pontos caros a este trabalho, como: a estrutura informacional, a categorização, a gradiência da predicação complexa, a auxiliaridade e a serialização verbal. The constructions focused in this research are formed by two or more verbs inflected, connected or not by the conjunction and, as in: se ne va e piange (go and cry), prendo e me ne vado (I take and go away). Our initial investigation consisted in the documentation of these constructions through corpora from Italian. However, considering that the study of the PVCs are incipient in Italian, its description and analysis still need an exhaustive study, which aims the analysis of its structure and function. Abstract:
After World War II in Italy the cultural scene was in need of resuscitation. Artists searched for tools with which to revifify their works. Central to this, for many key figures in the fifties and sixties, was an engagement with English-language Modernism. This phenomenon has been widely recognised, but this thesis is its first sustained analysis. I draw together the receptions of three English-language Modernist authors – T. S. Eliot, Ezra Pound and James Joyce – who, as a triad, were instrumental in the radicalisation of the arts in Italy in the fifties and sixties. I show that their works were elevated as models of an experimental approach to language that was revisited by Italian artists – most notably by poets associated with the Neoavantgarde. The specific Modernist linguistic techniques which were adopted by the Italians that we will consider here are the mingling of languages and styles, the use of citations, and the perversion and manipulation of single words and idioms. The poets considered in most depth to exemplify this phenomenon are Edoardo Sanguineti, who was a major exponent of the Neoavantgarde, and Amelia Rosselli, who was more peripherally and problematically associated with the movement. Both poets desecrated the traditional language of poetry and energised their own poetry with recourse to Modernist techniques which they consciously and deliberately adopted from Eliot, Pound and Joyce. An unpicking of the mechanics of these techniques in Sanguineti's and Rosselli's poetry reveals that their texts necessitate an active mode of reading. This aligns with the intellectual ideas propounded by Walter Benjamin, Roland Barthes and Umberto Eco, all of whom grounded their theories on readership in analyses of the linguistic experiments of Modernism. Sanguineti's and Rosselli's poetry fulfil the characteristics of Eco's “open” work, Barthes' “polysemous” work, and bring about Benjamin's “shock-effect” in the reader. These radical linguistic techniques, appropriated from the Modernists, contribute to each poets' overall poetic projects – they enact Edoardo Sanguineti's anarchic and revolutionary impulses, and stage Amelia Rosselli's thematic conflicts.

L'elaborato si pone come obiettivo quello di indagare un aspetto non ancora affrontato nel campo della ricerca linguistica in Lingua dei Segni Italiana (LIS), così come nelle lingue dei segni in generale, ovvero la possibilità tra i giovani segnanti sordi di sviluppare termini Slang con caratteristiche paragonabili a quelle dei termini usati dai giovani udenti, ma anche con alcune peculiarità specifiche del mondo dei Sordi. Il mio lavoro analizza in particolare alcune produzioni di ragazzi sordi frequentanti l'Istituto per Sordi A. Magarotto di Padova, che da sempre rappresenta luogo di scambio e di contatto tra gli studenti sordi, i quali contribuiscono a un notevole arricchimento linguistico che va a unirsi alle numerose varianti della LIS a livello nazionale. L'analisi dei segni Slang sarà preceduta da un primo ampio capitolo che mira a dimostrare lo status linguistico delle lingue dei segni, e in particolare di quello della LIS (ancora privo di un riconoscimento ufficiale a livello giuridico), sottolineando come queste lingue presentino un sistema fonologico, morfologico e sintattico, al pari di quello delle lingue vocali. La tesi affronta inoltre alcuni aspetti della Sociolinguistica, applicati al mondo della popolazione Sorda, che aiuteranno il lettore a capire alcuni aspetti fondamentali della cultura Sorda, introducendolo all’analisi dei segni slang emersi dai ragazzi sordi intervistati.

Standard Italian is undergoing several changes, as observed by recent researches. In particular, they are considered as expanding and stabilizing in a new form of standard, referred to as neo-standard (Berruto), or italiano dell’uso medio (Sabatini), or italiano tendenziale (Mioni). Have these changes become part of the linguistic input presented to learners? To which extent and for what reasons? This thesis tries to answer these questions. In order to accomplish the purpose of this thesis, a corpus of 9 textbooks (3 textbooks for each level) was collected. The textbooks, which are published in Italy, were chosen because they appeared to be the most used among teachers of Italian as Second Language. In order to discover which were the most used textbooks a survey was conducted among teachers via questionnaire. Publishing houses were contacted as well for a feedback. The data collection was carried out manually. The first section of this thesis focuses on contemporary Italian. First, a brief history of Italian is provided in order to understand present day Italian. Second, the “architecture” of Italian language varieties is explained, in order to introduce the standard variety. Third, the concept of standard in Italian is analysed in detail. At the end of this section, an outline of the main recent trends of language change concerning Italian is provided. The second section focuses in detail on the main morpho-syntactic features analysed in this thesis. The features concern syntax, as well as the verb system and the pronominal system. In particular, they are: left and right dislocation, cleft sentence, presentational cleft, changes in the use of pronouns (i.e. lui, lei, loro, as subject pronouns), multipurpose che, changes in the use of verbs (i.e. use of present tense instead of the future, modal uses of the future and other changes in the use of the future; expansion of the use of imperfetto; uses of passato prossimo and passato remoto; the use of the indicative instead of the subjunctive; the development of verbal periphrases); in addition, also other phenomena as considered, such as agreement ad sensum, changes in interrogative and exclamatory sentences, conjunctions in subordinate sentences. The third section focuses on the role of texts in language teaching and the notion of input, in order to provide background information for the analyses of the corpus. First, a brief history of language teaching approaches and method is provided. Second, the notion of text in the Common European Framework of Reference is analysed. Third, an outline of teaching Italian as Second language is provided. Last, elements about the discussion on which Italian to teach to foreigners are provided. The fourth section provides the analyses of the data collected, followed by the discussion of the results and conclusions.

Children of Italian immigrants in Montreal are in contact with many languages and kinds of speech. French and English are used publicly, formal Italian is studied in heritage classes, a dialect of the family's region of origin is used at home, and a kind of koine is frequently used in interactions with other Italian immigrants. The contact of these languages produces various kinds of interferences. These lead a child to make errors when he tries to use the Standard Italian code. In this research, children's compositions are examined for errors which in turn are analysed and classified. The causes of these errors are investigated and statistics are presented to indicate the frequency of errors or the power of various causes.
An effort is made to show all the different errors and interferences that occur, and to discover a pattern of their causes. The data put forth might eventually serve as a base for further studies on the pedagogical prevention or correction of errors in the teaching of Standard Italian as adapted to the specific situation in Montreal.

In this thesis I analyse a selection of Italian pulp fiction from the 1990s. My approach combines sociolinguistics and literary criticism, and uses textual analysis to show how this writing fuses influences from contemporary youth cultures and languages, and Italian literary tradition. The key themes of my analysis are pulp's multifaceted relationships with Anglophone culture, in particular punk music, its links to previous generations of Italian authors and intellectuals, and its engagement with contemporary Italian social issues. In Chapter 1, I review the existing literature on 1990s Italian pulp. Following on from this, I outline how a primarily linguistic approach allows me to consider a selection of authors, such as Rossana Campo, Silvia Ballestra, Aldo Nove, Enrico Brizzi and Isabella Santacroce, from a unifying perspective, and how this approach offers a means of considering the varied but contemporary perspectives on Italian culture, society, politics and literature offered by this group of writers. In Chapter 2, I show how pulp authors construct their linguistic style on the basis of spoken youth language varieties, and consider their motivations for doing so. Chapter 3 traces the literary precedents for this use of language, using comparative textual analysis to examine the nature of the relationships between pulp and American literature, and late twentieth century Italian fiction by Arbasino, Tondelli and Pasolini, in order to question some of the myths surrounding the literary sources of pulp. Chapter 4 deals with the relationship between pulp and popular culture, contrasting the notion of popular culture presented in this fiction to that proposed by earlier generations of Italian intellectuals, and discussing the theoretical perspectives that this reveals. Finally, I debate the extent to which pulps often disturbing and controversial subject matter reflects an attempt to deal with ethical issues, and consider pulp's success in achieving these aims.

English is the lingua franca that helps everyone to communicate and it is one of the most studied foreign language in the world. Abstract:
The purpose of this study is to investigate different factors concerning foreign language learning environment and third language acquisition. In the first part of this paper I will review previous literature related to focal points of my research, such as teaching approaches, motivation, cultural differences in teaching and learning methods (with a special focus on Eastern cultures), language anxiety, class management and error correction. The second part of this paper, instead, will be focused on my experimental research led among forty-seven international students of Italian as a third language at Venice International University (VIU), during the spring semester of 2016. The research was conducted among students of Italian of both beginner (A1) and intermediate level (B1) though a Likert Scale Questionnaire. Some of the main results obtained observe the extreme importance and consciousness assigned by students nowadays to error correction in language learning. A surprising finding concerns Asian students and peer correction, as the expected outcome was for them to be reluctant in using this form of correction. They instead reported being more eager to use peer to peer correction compared to Western students. Eventually one of the most important outcome is the foreign language anxiety degree which, despite referring to a third language, does not seem to disappear completely with time, experience or proficiency.

Teaching Italian as a second language using drama texts as the main didactic tool stimulates learners' emotional and motivational involvement. The aim of this project is to develop a didactic methodology that is able to trigger learners' emotions and sustain their initial motivation, thus resulting in a better and more stable mnemonic retention of the linguistic input. The 1st chapter provides an overview of the neuroscientifical specifics of the acquisitional and memory process and of the main theories of motivation. The 2nd chapter discusses the features, aims and techniques of teaching Italian as a second language through drama texts, as well as its strengths and weaknesses, in the frame of humanistic-affective studies. The 3rd chapter stresses the importance of outlining the learner's profile, a table of the student's multiple intelligences, motivational drivers, cognitive and learning styles and main characteristics of his/her interlanguage. Ultimately, the last part describes a project of teaching Italian as a second language using didactically-adapted plays experimented in a multicultural class of adult learners.

This dissertation offers a detailed description of the display of evaluative features in LIS. The analysis of naturalistic and elicited data shows that LIS exploits simultaneous and sequential strategies. A morphophonological analysis reveals that: LIS is endowed with dedicated non-manual markers for each feature; these markers are evaluative bound morphemes; phonological and semantic constraints motivate the alternation between sequential and simultaneous strategies. The combination of three different theoretical approaches was crucial to gain a complete picture of the phenomenon. From a generative perspective, the results support the universality of evaluative features and that the syntactic engine deriving evaluative constructions in spoken languages is active in LIS as well; typologically, evaluative constructions in LIS respect the generalisations defined for spoken languages, despite the different modality employed; from a cognitive point of view, data show that LIS can exploit its articulators to visually encode concepts that remain abstract in spoken languages. Questa tesi offre una descrizione dettagliata della realizzazione dei tratti valutativi in LIS. L’analisi di dati spontanei ed elicitati mostra che la LIS impiega strategie di valutazione simultanea e sequenziale. L’ analisi morfofonologica rivela che: ogni tratto è espresso da componenti non manuali dedicate; tali marcatori sono morfemi legati valutativi; restrizioni fonologiche e semantiche motivano l’alternanza tra strategie sequenziali e simultanee. La combinazione di approcci teorici diversi ha permesso di delineare un quadro completo del fenomeno. In ottica generativista, i risultati mostrano l’universalità dei tratti valutativi, e che la forza sintattica che deriva le costruzioni valutative nelle lingue vocali è cruciale anche in LIS; in ottica tipologica, le costruzioni valutative rispettano le generalizzazioni definite per le lingue vocali, nonostante la diversa modalità impiegata; in ottica cognitivista, i dati mostrano come la LIS faccia uso degli articolatori a disposizione per rendere visibili tratti che nelle lingue vocali rimangono astratti.

The current thesis presents the differential profiles of Italian and Greek dyslexic and typically developing children on a series of language tests, tapping both production and comprehension abilities. By highlighting the differential profiles of dyslexic children on a series of language tasks that include structures that have been found to be particularly vulnerable in Specific Language Impairment, the current thesis aims to assist the processes of differential diagnosis, to serve as a base for further investigation of the differences between the two disorders, as well as to contribute to the development of rehabilitation material. The tests that have been implemented focused on the production and comprehension of direct, indirect object clitics, definite articles and wh-questions through elicited production, sentence-picture matching and grammaticality judgment tasks. Moreover, an additional task on the comprehension of wh-questions through meta-syntactic facilitation was introduced. Finally, the results obtained by Greek-speaking children with Specific Language Impairment are presented, again, with an emphasis on the different performance profiles between SLI and typically developing children, as well as on the potential differentiating patterns between typically developing, SLI and dyslexic children.
