Abstract:

In the sixteenth century, the nocturne genre developed in Italian art introducing the idea of a scene depicted in the darkness of night. This concept of darkness paired with intense light was adopted by Caravaggio in the late sixteenth century and popularized by himself and his followers. The seemingly sudden shift towards darkness and night is puzzling when viewed as individual occurrences in artists’ works. As an entire genre, the night scene bears cultural implications that indicate the level of influence culture and society have over artists and patrons. The rising popularity of the theater and the tension between Protestantism and Catholicism intersected to create a changing view on the perception of darkness and light. This merging of cultural phenomena affected Caravaggio and his contemporaries, prompting them to develop the nocturne genre to meet the growing demands for darker images.

Abstract:

Two-part compositions were one of the main means through which music was taught during the Renaissance and Baroque periods, and they therefore played an important role in preparing both professional and amateur musicians. The main focus of my work is formed by the published volumes of duos ranging in date from 1521, the year when the first collection was issued, to 1744, the date of publication of Angelo Bertalotti’s Solfeggi, though I also take into account duos published in musical treatises. The importance of duos during this period is evidenced by the number of extant collections - more than sixty in Italy alone - and these publications reveal an essential continuity in the teaching of music theory and practice over a period of 250 years. So far, only a fraction of the music used for this purpose has been studied by other scholars. During this period all two-part didactic music served consistent and well-defined functions: the teaching of note-values and solmization; the teaching of modality and composition; as the basis for practising both vocal and instrumental music. My thesis traces the history of the genre, analyses aspects of the compositional structure of duos and examines the detail the various functions of duos. It also considers the intended readership of volumes of duos, through study of the publishers, composers and dedicates involved.

Abstract:

The early baroque songs, or cantatas, of Luigi Rossi (1597-1653) are largely absent from the canon of standard Italian vocal repertory utilized by young singers and voice teachers today. In this document Rossi’s composition style is considered, along with modern edition trends, within the emerging genre of Italian early baroque song. Several of Luigi Rossi’s vocal works — chosen for their simplicity, brevity, dramatic content, and suitability for a young singer — are presented in modern transcriptions for voice and piano. The following document lays the groundwork for the inclusion of Luigi Rossi’s songs in the modern canon of Italian vocal music. Part I provides an introduction to Luigi Rossi and the considerations involved in creating modern editions of early baroque solo vocal music. In Chapter 1, Rossi’s patronage and compositional output are considered along with the reception and dissemination of his works in Italy and France. Chapter 2 of this study explores the historical context and lasting influence of Parisotti’s Arie Antiche, the larger collection from which the ubiquitous Schirmer edition, Twenty-four Italian Songs and Arias of the Seventeenth and Eighteenth Centuries, is drawn. One well-known song that appears in the Schirmer edition is Giulio Caccini’s Amarilli, mia bella. In an effort to illustrate trends in modern editions and performance practice, this song is traced from its first appearance in 1602 through representations in modern anthologies. Chapter 3 considers the practical concerns of modern editors of baroque vocal music – such as performance practice applications, ornamentation, and pedagogical considerations – with respect to the cantatas of Luigi Rossi. Chapter 4 discusses the three cantatas by Luigi Rossi that are presented in Part II as performance editions.

Abstract:

Paul M. Walker points out the importance of three seventeenth-century manuscripts which, according to him, reflect the origins of the late Baroque monothematic fugue. The documents present a new "model" with specific criteria to write monothematic fugues. Walker suggests that the criteria presented in these manuscripts are first found in seventeenth-century Italian violin ensemble fugues. This thesis traces the development of seventeenth-century monothematic fugues and how they compare with the criteria presented in the manuscripts, with a particular emphasis on Italian violin ensemble fugues. The manuscripts indeed present a new "model" to write monothematic fugues as compared to earlier models. Generally speaking, the criteria included in the manuscripts are more present in monothematic fugues found in seventeenth-century violin ensemble music than in keyboard music of the same period. However, many of these imitative pieces present characteristics of fugato (rather than "true" fugues) and cannot be compared with the manuscripts' criteria. Therefore, the documents are important from a theoretical standpoint but their practical application in seventeenth-century violin music is not as clear or systematic as Walker implies.

Abstract:

The French baroque petit motet was the most prolific genre of seventeenth-century France. In this study, three petits motets, specifically Regina caeli settings of French composers Marc-Antoine Charpentier, Nicolas Bernier and François Couperin are examined with an emphasis on the motets’ historical context in relation to the French monarchy and the Italian concepts that the composers incorporated into each work. All three Regina caeli settings display some Italian compositional techniques of the stile moderno in various degrees and were written in different contextual ecclesiastic milieux. The intersections of, as well as distinctions between, musical ideas of traditional French style and Italian innovations was at the center of music and musical discourse during the baroque period. The French were introduced to Italian style by travelling musicians at the court of France; however, when Louis XIV gave Jean-Baptiste Lully the important position of surintendant de la musique, the idea of an authentic unaltered French sound became prevalent among musicians and critics. Lully, strongest defender of “pure” French style, created a strict environment for musicians at court, and only after his death, did composers gain in freedom. The study suggests that a closer association to Louis XIV permitted musicians to integrate more of the Italian stile moderno techniques than those who did not have this opportunity. Crucial figures of the French monarchy, Louis XIV, Philippe II d’Orléans and the duc de Bourgogne were connected to the three composers central to this project and impacted the outcome of their work. With the musical-historical study of three Regina caeli settings, this project demonstrates the importance of the petit motet genre within the repertoire and the need for additional research to increase the accessibility of this inestimable music

Le projet de recherche que nous présentons porte sur l'étude et la reconstruction de la personnalité et de l’œuvre de Giulio Benso, peintre, dessinateur et architecte génois entre le maniérisme et baroque, spécialiste dans le décor à trompe l’œil. La dispersion d’un tiers de ses œuvres, en particulier de retables et des quelques décors à fresque, unie au grand nombre de projets graphiques de diverses qualités qui lui ont été attribués dans les dernières décennies ont engendré une mauvaise réputation de son travail, trop souvent considéré de second ordre par rapport à ses contemporains. Dans le cadre de cette thèse, son activité artistique sera donc analysée et contextualisée à l’aide de documents d’archives et des sources anciennes, à partir de sa formation auprès de l’Académie de Giovanni Battista Paggi, dans un environnement culturel génois, en passant par les nombreuses commandes liguriennes et étrangères –allemandes et françaises– lui assignées au cours de la vie. Cela nous permettra de mettre en évidence les contacts, les relations avec certains artistes tels que Giovanni Andrea Ansaldo et Giovanni Battista Carlone, les inspirations d’après les écoles lombardes, vénitiennes, bolonaises et romaines et les expériences qu’il vécut et qui lui ont permis de faire évoluer son travail ainsi que de diffuser son style aux générations suivantes de peintres. Notre analyse sera conduite d’une manière rigoureuse, en mettant en avant les documents existants sur l’artiste, sur Gênes et sur l'École génoise du XVIe et XVIIe siècles. Par ailleurs, notre étude sera enrichie par les recherches documentaires dans les différents établissements d’archives et par le dépouillement des sources anciennes, dans le but d’établir la complète activité artistique du peintre, tableaux et fresques détruits compris, pour en mettre en valeur son évolution et les relations avec ses contemporains. Notre travail présente donc une partie introductive concernant la fortune critique que Benso connut au cours de sa vie et après sa mort. A cela, fait suite l’étude de sa formation à l’Académie de Paggi et des commandes de peintures et de décorations en trompe l’œil reçues à Gênes, dans le Ponente et à Pieve de Teco. Puis, un troisième chapitre est consacré aux missions à l’étranger : en Allemagne, plus précisément à Weingarten, pour lequel nous publions dans le détail la relation épistolaire entre l’artiste et le commanditaire Gabriele Bucellino, grâce aux documents anciens retrouvés et des lettres transcrites par l’héritier de Benso, père Lorenzo Sertorio. En France, à Cagnes-sur-Mer (Provence), où nous étudions le vaste programme iconographique et iconologique du décor, choisi par la famille, avec une forte référence politique. Puis, nous présentons deux catalogues. L’un consacré à la peinture et l’autre à la production graphique. Le premier suit un ordre chronologique par mission, incluant les commandes perdues ou détruites, en cherchant, ainsi, à offrir une lecture de l’investissement artistique du peintre, du cadre social et culturel de la Ligurie, de l’Allemagne et de la France. Les commandes de longues durées telles que celles de l’Annunziata del Guastato à Gênes de 1638 à 1647 et Weingarten, de 1627 à 1667 ont été traitées dans leur unité pour favoriser l’analyse de leur évolution. A cela, fait suite le catalogue des dessins présenté selon l’ordre chronologique d’exécution. L’étude de la production graphique de Benso nécessite une analyse rigoureuse et scientifique basée sur des vérifications stylistiques de même que documentaires, c’est donc ainsi que nous avons procédé. En effet, les analyses conduites dans le passé sur les dessins ont révélé beaucoup de problèmes d’attribution, qu’impliquaient une remise en ordre. Nous nous sommes proposés donc, de tenter d’établir le corpus complet de son œuvre graphique en réexaminant toutes les feuilles à lui attribuées et celles de l’école génoise conservées dans collections publiques et privées du monde The research project we are presenting focuses on the study and the reconstruction of the personality and artworks of Giulio Benso, a Genoese painter, draftsman and architect between Mannerism and Baroque, a specialist in illusionist decoration. The dispersion of a third of his works, in particular altar paintings and some fresco decorations, combined with the large number of graphic projects of different quality which have been attributed to him in recent decades have generated a bad reputation for his work, too often considered as a second-rate one compared to his contemporaries. In this study, his artistic activity will therefore be analyzed and contextualized using archival documents and ancient sources, from his training at the Academy of Giovanni Battista Paggi, a Genoese cultural environment, to the numerous Ligurian and foreign orders - German and French - assigned to him during his life, in order to highlight the contacts, the relationships with certain artists such as Giovanni Andrea Ansaldo and Giovanni Battista Carlone, the inspirations according to the Lombard, Venetian, Bolognese and Roman schools. The experiences he had and that allowed him to evolve in his work and to communicate his style to the successive generations of painters will also be taken into account. This analysis has been conducted in a precise and rigorous manner, by highlighting the existing documents on the artist, on his life and his works. The in-depth study of all the modern contributions published so far on him, on Genoa and on the Genoese school of the 16th and 17th centuries, has been enriched by documentary research in the various archives establishments of the Liguria region and by the examination of ancient sources, such as guides and manuscripts on the artistic production of the territory, with the aim of establishing the complete artistic activity of the painter, including destroyed paintings and frescoes, in order to highlight its evolution and the relationships with its contemporaries. This work thus presents an introductory part concerning the critical fortune lived by the painter during his life and after his death. This is followed by the second, which is focused on the study of his training at the Paggi Academy and on commissions for paintings and trompe l'oeil decorations received in Liguria. Then, a third chapter is devoted to missions abroad: in Germany, in Weingarten, described through the epistolary relationship between the artist and the sponsor Gabriele Bucellino, thanks to the old documents that were found and the letters transcribed by the heir of Benso, father Lorenzo Sertorio, and in France, in Cagnes-sur-Mer, in Provence, for which the vast iconographic and iconological program of the decor, chosen by the family, with a strong political reference has been studied. This study then presents two catalogs. One devoted to painting and the other to graphic production. The first follows a chronological order by mission, including lost or destroyed orders, thereby seeking to offer a reading of the painter’s artistic investment in the social and cultural framework of Liguria, Germany and France. Long-term orders such as those from the Annunziata del Guastato in Genoa from 1638 to 1647 or those for Weingarten from 1627 to 1667 are processed in their unit to facilitate the analysis of their development. This is followed by the catalog of drawings presented chronologically. The study of Giulio Benso's graphic production requires a rigorous and scientific analysis based on stylistic as well as technical and documentary checks. Studies conducted in the past on the artist's drawings have revealed many attribution problems, which involve reordering. It is therefore proposed to try to establish the complete corpus of his graphic work by re-examining all the sheets attributed to him and those of the Genoese school kept in public and private collections

Abstract:

Cases of Italian embedded self-portraiture appear in the sacred art of some of the most renowned artists of the Cinquecento and early Seicento, artists such as Bronzino, Michelangelo, Titian, Tintoretto, and Caravaggio. This thesis first examines the history of the practice from its origins in Quattrocento Florence and Venice then argues that an important development in the function and presentation of embedded self-portraits can be observed as Cinquecento artists experienced broad shifts in religious and cultural life as a result of the Reformation and Counter-Reformation. It also assesses three works by Caravaggio to suggest that embedding self-portraits in religious art was a variable and meaningful convention that allowed artists to inject both their personal and public emotions. This thesis argues that in the Cinquecento and early Seicento, the very gesture of embedding a self-portrait in sacred artworks provided a window into an artist's individuality, personality, and piety.

Abstract:

The author investigates the voice in diverse genres and styles, documenting and interpreting vocal performance through a contextual analysis of specifically chosen repertoire. This repertoire is drawn from collaboration with two musical groups, the Renaissance Players and Coda and from the author's artistic direction and presentation of four diverse recitals: American Songs, Italian Baroque, American Folk and Theatre and Nostalgia. Each recital is treated as a separate case study, in which the process of selecting, rehearsing and performing the repertoire is closely examined. Recordings and selected examples of scores are included to illustrate the findings. Abstract:

This project looks at two members of Florence’s Medici family, Cosimo il Vecchio (1389-1464) and Duke Cosimo I (1519-1574), in an attempt to assess how they used the patronage of art to facilitate their rule. By looking at their individual political representations through art, the specifics of their propagandist works and what form these pieces of art came, it is possible to analyze their respective rules. This analysis allows for a clearer understanding of how these two men, each in very different positions, found art as an ally for their political endeavors. While they were in power only one hundred years apart, they present uniquely different strategies for the purpose of creating and maintaining their power through the patronage of art.

L’objectif de cette thèse est de montrer que la réception de l’art baroque italien par Stendhal et les frères Goncourt a influencé dans une large mesure leurs esthétiques propres. La première partie resitue et restitue l’horizon d’attente propre à Stendhal et aux Goncourt, soit les systèmes et les paradigmes de référence artistiques, les ouvrages sur l’Italie ou sur Rome qu’ils avaient lus et les écrits sur l’art, en particulier sur l’art et les artistes baroques, dont le beyliste s’inspira, et qui favorisèrent la compréhension de l’art baroque. La deuxième partie porte sur quatre motifs de résistance au baroque. Nous y confrontons le discours et l’imaginaire français à l’art baroque afin de situer Stendhal et les Goncourt au sein de ce clivage. Cet ensemble de préjugés a paradoxalement mis en lumière les pouvoirs de séduction qu’avait pu exercer le baroque sur Stendhal et les Goncourt et fait ressortir les caractéristiques baroques susceptibles de se retrouver dans leurs romans. Enfin, nous avons établi des parallèles entre, d’une part, ce qui attira particulièrement Stendhal et les Goncourt dans l’art baroque et ce qu’ils en ont restitué dans leurs ouvrages, et entre l’art visuel et l’art littéraire baroques, d’autre part. Cette dernière partie, en révélant, dans les romans stendhaliens et goncourtiens, une poétique baroque nous a permis d’éclairer l’esthétique romanesque de nos auteurs The purpose of this study is to show that Stendhal’s and the Goncourt brothers’ appreciation of Italian Baroque art exerted a decisive influence on their own aesthetics. Part one takes a look at Stendhal’s and the Goncourt brothers’ “horizon of expectations”, i. E. Artistic paradigms or references, what literature they read about Italy and Rome as well as writings on art, in particular Baroque art and artists, which inspired Stendhal and helped forge his understanding of Baroque Art. Part two explores four elements of resistance to the Baroque. This study goes on to compare conflicting French views and representations of Baroque art so as to identify Stendhal’s and the Goncourt brothers’ own position along this spectrum. Paradoxically, this set of anti-Baroque prejudices serves to shed light on the particular attraction the Baroque exerted on Stendhal and the Goncourt brothers and which Baroque characteristics are most likely to surface in their novels. The final part of this study draws parallels between the seduction Baroque art exerted on Stendhal and the Goncourt brothers and the way it manifested in their novels as well as between visual and literary Baroque art. Thus, by drawing attention to the presence of Baroque poetics in Stendhal’s and the Goncourt Brothers’ writings, this study sheds new light on their novelistic aesthetics

Buscamos analisar num primeiro momento, alguns fatores que influenciaram a escrita calviniana, como os movimentos de Resistência na Itália, que visavam lutar contra as atrocidades da Primeira e da Segunda Guerra Mundial e do fascismo, como também algumas características da estrutura da fábula, que podem ser identificadas no romance estudado, a partir das atitudes de benfeitor de Cosme que o qualificam como um herói, pois passa por diversas dificuldades e lutas em favor do bem comum de todos. Na segunda parte da Dissertação, evidenciamos algumas referências históricas feitas à Revolução Francesa e ao Iluminismo e seus pontos de intersecção com o contexto histórico, em que Calvino viveu período, que envolveu Guerras e movimentos de grande repercussão e repressão como: o fascismo, o nazismo e o socialismo; menções de espaços reais e de Instituições históricas e de referências a figuras históricas como: Napoleão Bonaparte, Rousseau, Diderot, entre outros. No final da Dissertação, apontamos certas características que aproximam Il barone rampante a variedade do realismo mágico metafísico, como, por exemplo, a decisão do protagonista, Cosme de morar sobre as árvores, entre outros eventos. Além disso, comentamos algumas significações alegóricas em relação ao contexto histórico da narrativa, que remete na realidade ao século XX, época em que Calvino viveu e sobre a alegoria do intelectual Cosme a partir da sua mudança de ponto de vista sobre as árvores, que induzem a reflexão pela necessidade da valorização da educação e pela... Ce travail étudie l'impact du catholicisme en Italie du Sud à travers le culte des saints. La première partie évoque certains traits de la croyance telle qu'elle se développe dans la seconde moitié du XVIe siècle : le rôle de la littérature hagiographique,les élections des saints protecteurs par les communautés d'habitants,la mise en place du cadre théologique et canonique. Plus d'une centaine de saints ont été recensés. Ils sont étudiés dans la deuxième partie en fonction de l'évolution chronologique,de leur sexe,de leur origine sociale et de leur obédience religieuse. Plusieurs chapitres sont consacrés à la "fausse" sainteté telle que nous la montrent les sources inquisitoriales. La troisième partie aborde les relations du saint et de son public,qui se manifestent essentiellement dans la demande de miracles. L'histoire de la canonisation a la renaissance se caractérise par le long silence de cette pratique pontificale après 1523 et les condamnations luthériennes de 1524. Reprenant en 1588 et confiée à la congrégation des rites, la canonisation est marquée, à l’âge baroque, par le grand nombre, l'ouverture au monde non européen, une nouvelle et nette prépondérance espagnole et une traditionnelle sous-représentation féminine (20%). Les procès des femmes françaises et italiennes du XVIIe siècle ouverts avant 1700 et les éloges (1679) de bénédictines françaises de mère de Blemur offrent un corpus varié mais homogène pour étudier la place des expériences mystiques dans la recherche et la reconnaissance de la sainteté au XVIIe siècle. L'expression "expérience mystique" apparait à la fin du XIXe siècle, alors que, depuis plusieurs années, positives et spiritualistes s'opposent sur les apparitions, les extases ou les visions. Depuis, la mystique a donné à de nombreuses recherches tant médicales que psychologiques, philosophiques, sociologiques ou historiques. Au XVIIe siècle, la théologie mystique, conçue dans la tradition dionysienne telle que l'a transmise Gerson, est une science expérimentale de Dieu. Après une période de crise au XVIe siècle due aux condamnations luthériennes, elle connait un renouveau remarquable à l’âge baroque, grâce à l'école carmélitaine espagnole et dans un esprit de contre-réforme The history of the canonisation in the renaissance is characterized by a long silence of the pontifical practice after 1523 and the lutheran condemnations of 1524. Begining again in 1588 and trusted to the congregation of the rites, the canonisation, is marked, in the baroque age by the great number, the opening to the uneuropean world,a new and clear spanish preponderance and a traditional feminine minority (20%). The processes of french and italian women of the XVIIth century-opened before 1700 - and the french benedictines eloges (1679) by. Mere de Blemur offer a varied but homogeneous corpus to study the place of the mystical experiences in the search and the recognition of the sainthood in the XVIIth century. The expression "mystical experience" appears at the end of the end of the XIXth century when positivists and spiritualists are in opposition on the apparitions,ecstasies or visions. Since then,mysticism is given rise to a lot of medical,psychological,philosophical, sociological and historical researches. In the xviith century,the mystical theology, understood in the dionysian tradition such as transmitted by gerson,is a experimental science of God. Le corpus selectionne est constitue par les ouvrages de quatre auteurs qui se nomment isabella cortese, moderata fonte, lucrezia marinella et arcangela tarabotti. Nous avons etudie leurs ecrits dans une perspective historique, en tant que temoignages de la condition feminine dans la societe italienne de cette epoque et dans une perspective stylistique, afin d'evaluer l'influence des modeles litteraires et la capacite de ces femmes ecrivains a personnaliser leur ecriture. Nous avons pu constater la presence d'une reflexion sur leur etat de femmes de lettres et sur la condition feminine en general, reflexion qui aboutit, leplus souvent, a un discours de revendication particulierement moderne Our research is dedicated to the study of the feminine literature in venice at the end of the renaissance and at the beginning of the baroque period. Cette thèse de doctorat repose sur l'étude d'aspects musicaux particuliers liés au culte de saint Jacques-le-Majeur et au pèlerinage de Saint-Jacques de Compostelle. Le cadre est celui de l’Espagne, de la France et de l’Italie du dix-septième et de la première moitié du dix-huitième siècles. Les liens historiques, politiques, sociologiques, culturels et religieux qui opposent ou lient ces trois nations au moment de la mise en place de la Réforme Catholique issue du concile de Trente, montrent que la place que tiennent les chemins de Compostelle et saint Jacques y est plus importante qu’ailleurs à la même époque. Une abondante bibliographie existe, mais qui n'associe ni ne synthétise les différents aspects de ce qui peut constituer une seule problématique. De même, aucune ébauche d'un recensement systématique des œuvres du répertoire sacré baroque pour saint Jacques n'avait été jusques là tentée tandis que la restitution des œuvres n'est que très ponctuelle. Aussi, abordant une problématique qui repose sur un sujet spirituel par une voie jamais empruntée – celle de la musique baroque – la thèse cherche, pour mieux la comprendre, à observer, relever et analyser tout un ensemble d’aspects qui constituent autant de « solives » et en tous cas une trame complexe, en raison notamment de la diversité des sources, de leur nature et de leur contenu. Cependant, à la lumière d'une méthodologie renouvelée, d'un large éventail de sources inédites et d'un ensemble de manifestations et d'œuvres musicales associées au culte de saint Jacques et au pèlerinage de Compostelle qui est aussi celui d’une itinérance musicale dont la richesse tient autant à l’ampleur du répertoire qu’il suscita qu’aux échanges et aux rencontres qu’il permit, cette recherche espère ouvrir de nouvelles voies qui pourront être empruntées pour enrichir encore la connaissance This doctorate thesis is based on the study of particular musical aspects bound to the cult to Saint-James-the-Great and to the pilgrimage to St James of Compostelle. It is set in Spain, France and Italy in the XVIIth century and first half of the XVIII th. The historical, political, sociological, cultural and religious links which oppose or bind these three nations at the time of the setting of the Catholic Reformation stemmed from the Council of Trente show that the place held by the routes to Compostelle and St James is more important there than anywhere else at this time. There is a rich bibliography but it doesn’t associate nor synthesize the different aspects of what can constitute an only set of problems. In the same way, no draft of a systematic census of the works of the sacred repertory had been attempted so far whereas the restitution of the works is only exceptional. Therefore, dealing with a set of problems which is based on a spiritual matter through a way which has never been taken – the way of Baroque music – so as to understand it better, the thesis aims at observing, recording and analysing a whole range of the aspects which constitute as many « joists » and in any case a complex framework, especially due to the variety of the sources, their nature and content. Nevertheless, in the light of a renewed methodology, of a wide range of original sources and a whole of musical events and works associated to the cult of St James and the pilgrimage to Compostelle which is also a musical roving, the richness of which is due to the extent of the repertory it aroused as well as the exchanges and encounters it allowed, this research aims at opening new ways which will be taken to enrich knowledge Esta tesis de doctorado aborda el estudio de ciertos aspectos musicales vinculados con el culto de Santiago el Mayor y la peregrinación a Santiago de Compostela. El marco escogido lo constituye España, Francia e Italia en el siglo XVII y la primera mitad del XVIII. Los vínculos históricos, políticos, sociológicos, culturales y religiosos que unen, u oponen, estas tres naciones en tiempos de la instauración de la Reforma Católica resultante del concilio de Trento, ponen de manifiesto que el papel que desempeñan los Caminos de Santiago y el Apóstol es más importante que en ninguna otra parte en esa época. Existe una abundante bibliografía, pero que no asocia ni sintetiza los diversos aspectos de lo que puede constituir una misma problemática. De la misma manera, ningún esbozo de recuento sistemático de las obras del repertorio sagrado barroco para Santiago había sido hasta ahora intentado, mientras que la restitución de las obras sigue siendo muy puntual. Además, abordando bajo un aspecto hasta ahora no contemplado – el de la música barroca – una problemática fundamentada en un tema espiritual, la tesis intenta, para comprenderla mejor, observar, destacar y analizar todo un conjunto de elementos que constituyen otras tantas « vigas » y en cualquier caso una trama compleja, debido, en particular, a la diversidad de las fuentes, de su naturaleza y contenidos. Le portrait-charge se définit au croisement des disciplines historique, anthropologique et philosophique à partir de l'hypothèse d'un dépassement d'une histoire de la caricature dans une anthropologie de la charge. Cela suppose d'une part de réinterroger la caricature à partir des opérations auxquelles elle soumet l'effigie en mobilisant notamment une conception pragmatique de l'instance du spectateur. D'autre part de redéployer la notion de charge en s'interrogeant sur ce qu'il peut en être de son statut et de ses mises en œuvres aussi bien que des types de rapports qu'elle entretient avec les pratiques sociales, les croyances, le droit et la théologie. Cette recherche pose pour cadre général l'étude du portrait afflictif de la Renaissance jusqu'au seuil de l'époque baroque. Il s'agit dès lors de penser la charge des images dans la perspective d'une figurabilité de l'outrage et des pratiques infamantes. Il s'agit ensuite d'évaluer au sein d'un usage agressif de l'image un élément d'ambiguïté et de dérision. Le phénomène de la dérision est en effet l'un des plus complexes qui soient, si l'on veut bien ne pas couper ses manifestations individuelles et sociales de son implication théologique. Y rattacher la caricature ne signifie pas simplement voir en elle le contre-pied d'un idéal esthétique et héroïque mais aussi et surtout l'une des formes majeures de l'inversion comique The portrait-charge defines itself at the crossroads of historical, anthropological and philosophical disciplines, on the hypothesis of going beyond caricature history into an anthropology of charge. On the one hand, this implies re-examining caricature on the basis of the operations to which it submits the effigy in mobilizing a pragmatic conception of the instance of the viewer. On the other hand, this implies reconceiving the notion of charge, by questionning its status and implementation as well as its various relationships with social practices, beliefs, law, and theology. The general framework of this thesis is the study of the afflictive portrait from the Renaissance up to the threshold of the baroque period. It is, therefore, necessary to consider the charge of images in the perspective of a figurability of outragous and infamous practices. The next step is to assess an element of ambiguity and derision within an aggressive use of the image. The phenomenon of derision is indeed one of the most complex, if one does not strip its individual and social manifestations of its theological implication. Linking caricature to this phenomenon does not simply mean to see in it the opposite of an aesthetic and heroic ideal, but also and above aIl, one of the major forms of comic inversion

Le temps de la contre-réforme ou l’Age baroque nous offre le cadre essentiel où l'on doit inscrire le sujet de notre recherche : Vanini (1585-1619) et ses écrits; ce serait la meilleure façon de la mettre à l'abri des interprétations tendancieuses ou anachroniques, si fréquentes dans les approches faites jusqu'à une époque récente. Ce temps était fortement conditionné par une "logique de guerre" et l'imaginaire intensément travaillé par des métaphores récurrentes nourries de connotations sceptiques, qui tendaient à voir la vie comme un "songe" et le monde comme un "théâtre". Les gestes, les écrits -somme toute les actions du philosophe-, une fois resitués dans ce contexte, présentent, pour l'histoire de la pensée, l'intérêt d'une réponse originale ; même si Vanini se sert d'éléments d'autres courants et de doctrines présentes dans la philosophie de la renaissance tardive, et qu'il construit cette réponse sur les débris d'un savoir en crise (l'aristotélisme) cautionnant, dans sa version la plus orthodoxe, la violence idéologie de la contre-réforme, principale cible de sa critique. Son côté radical et sa valeur d'anticipation expliqueraient le composant polémique qui l'a toujours accompagné, mais aussi sa capacité d'agir, de par sa particulière insertion dans le courant libertin, comme un catalyseur ou une référence difficile à oublier quand il s'agit de repenser certains sujets importants lies au surgissement, à la consolidation d'une certaine mentalité moderne ainsi qu'à ses contradictions inhérentes : conception des fondements et fonction du savoir, place que l'on accorde à la nature et à l'homme dans la nature, relation philosophie-religion, philosophie-pouvoir, façon d'envisager les notions métaphysiques et l'horizon de la transcendance, possibles bases d'une éthique ne s'appuyant plus sur un fondement religieux The topic of our research is G. C. Vanini's life and works (1585-1619). Until recently, these have been partially or anachronistically interpreted. That is why we have decided to place them in their proper context, within the age of counter-reformation, or the age of barocco. This was a time strongly conditioned by a "logic of war", a time when imagination was deeply concerned by recurrent metaphors with sceptic connotations that tended to contemplate life as a "dream" and the world as a "theatre". Every deed and writing of this philosopher can be analyzed as an original answer in the history of thought, once they are replaced in their right context, Vanini uses elements from other schools and doctrines from the late renaissance philosophy and builds upon the ruins of a thought in crisis (Aristotelian tradition) that -in its most orthodox version- legitimates the violent ideology of counter-reformation, which is Vanini's main target. His radicalism, as well as his ability for anticipation would explain the controversy that has always accompanied him, under the contradictory labels of "hero" or "damned". It would explain as well his capacity for acting as a catalyst -within the libertine movement- and as a reference difficult to forget when we try to rethink some important subjects related to the origin and consolidation of a certain modern mentality and its inherent contradictions: the conception of the basis and functions of knowledge, the place we assign to nature -and to man in nature-, the relationships between philosophy and religion or philosophy and power, the way to consider the metaphysical concepts or the horizon of transcendence, and the possible basis of an ethical theory that isn't based on religion any longer

À l’instar d’autres créations humaines, qu’elles soient purement intellectuelles et/ou manuelles, il s’apparente à une fenêtre ouvrant une perspective inédite sur un monde révolu et qui lorsqu’elle est ouverte laisse s’échapper les clameurs venues d’un autre siècle. Face au mutisme des sources indirectes, il devient indispensable de se plonger au cœur des livrets, de s’intéresser aux mots et aux images, avant de donner la parole à la musique, en se donnant pour but d’expliciter tout ce que le texte implique, suggère, signifie, déclenche chez le spectateur.trice et tenter de reconstituer un corpus de références culturelles (littéraires, morales, religieuses, etc.), lesquelles colorent le texte de multiples et précieuses nuances, mais sont bien souvent perdus pour le public d’aujourd’hui. À travers cinq rôles féminins (Partenope, Berenice, Bradamante, Rosmira et Alcina), nous interrogerons la représentation de la femme et de la « féminité » à l’aune de la notion d’une puissance féminine et de ses implications sur la scène de l’opéra italien à Londres entre 1730 et 1737. Nous tenterons également d’apporter un éclairage supplémentaire sur cette période de transition dans la carrière du compositeur, lequel abandonne progressivement l’opéra italien pour se consacrer à l’oratorio anglais The opera libretto is a privileged, though often ignored, medium for probing the collective psyche of an era and its society. Like other human creations, be they purely intellectual and/or manual, it offers a window, opening a new perspective on a bygone world, and once cleansed of the dirt deposited by the centuries and open, it lets out the light and clamour of another century. The aim will be to reinstall the drammi per musica of George Frideric Handel (1685-1759) in their cultural and social context, to recreate the fullest possible reception of the work and have a chance to get as close as possible to the experience of the original audience. Faced with the silence of the indirect sources, it becomes essential to plunge into the heart of the booklets, to take an interest in the words and images, to give the music its true voice, trying to clarify all that the text implies, suggests, signifies, triggers in the spectator and to try to reconstruct a corpus of cultural references (literary, moral, religious, etc.), that colour the text with multiple nuances, but are often lost to today’s audience. Through five female roles (Partenope, Berenice, Bradamante, Rosmira and Alcina), we will question the representation of women, femaleness and femininity in the light of the notion of female power and its implications on the Italian opera scene in London between 1730 and 1737. We will also attempt to shed further light on this transitional period in the career of the composer, who gradually abandoned Italian opera to devote himself to English oratorio

Nous avons entrepris une exploration socio-historico-anthropologique de la periode d'elaboration des langages artistiques "baroques", recourant aux metalangues et aux textes de l'epoque. L'homme baroque (le courtisan), en pleine contre reforme, etait en "representation" sous le regard du prince, des clercs et de ses pairs. Il devait maitriser son affectivite par une connaissance de lui-meme (de son "ame"). Il etait tiraille entre une raison propre a lui assurer le salut, et une imagination capable de dechainer en lui des passions (concupiscibles, faibles et tolerees, ou irascibles, menant a la perdition). Le prince poursuivait au travers des representations artistiques un projet "civilisateur", destine a amender les murs. Dans le souci de preserver son pouvoir et sa dynastie, la paix civile et l'harmonie sociale, il proposait a ses sujets des "fetes" ludiques et "purgatives", et a ses courtisans (ses "rivaux" en puissance), des representations artistiques visant une "domestication" de leurs "pulsions". Les arts ont su repondre a ses attentes. Prenant en compte l'homme dans toutes les composantes de son ame, ils ont fait uvrer en lui, alors reconciliees, les passions et la raison, temoignant d'une haute pensee de l'homme. Le "madrigale" polyphonique, poursuivant ces objectifs dans une "langue" mathematique ("l'harmonie universelle") etait disqualifie quant a l'expression "convenante" des passions. Le modele monodique "grec" s'etait impose donnant naissance a la "monodie accompagnee par une basse continue". La musique s'etait donnee les moyens de realiser les fins du prince et ses fins propres par la "mimesis" des processus cognitifs et pathetiques, la mise en uvre de la "sprezzatura" et le statut nouveau accorde a l'interprete. Elle a su alors exprimer les "grandes passions" et a pu "penser" les grandes formes. Giulio caccini et claudio monteverdi furent les createurs les plus marquants du temps tant sur le plan langagier que formel We have undertaken to explore, from a social, historical and anthropological point of view, the period of time in which the "baroque" languages of the arts were elaborated by resorting to the metalanguages and the texts of the time. In the very middle of counter reformation, the baroque man -the courtier- was "performing an act" under the eyes of the prince, the clerics and his peers. He had to control his affectivity by knowing himself, i. E. His "soul". He was torn between a reason able to ensure his salvation and an imagination capable of unleashing passions within him -be they concupiscible, weak and as such admitted, or irascible and leading to perdition. By dint of artistic presentations, the prince carried on a civilizing purpose, meant for reforming the manners. With a view to preserving his power and his dynasty, civil peace and social harmony, he offered his subjects diverting and purgative "entertainments" and his courtiers -his potential rivalsartistic presentations aiming at domesticating their pulsions. Arts were then able to achieve his goals. Taking man into account, with all the parts of his soul, they had passions and reason working together, reconciled in the process and showing a noble view of man. The polyphonic "madrigale", pursuing these objectives in a "mathematic language" -"universal harmony"-, was not qualified to express passions in a convenient way. The "greek" monodic model had imposed itself, giving birth to "monody on a thorough bass". Music had given itself the means to achieve the prince's and its own goals, through the "mimesis" of cognitive and pathetic processes, the working out of the "sprezzatura" and the new status attributed to the interpreter. Music was then able to express "great passions" and "conceive" great forms. Giulio caccini and claudio monteverdi were the most prominent creative composers of the time, from both the point of view of language and of form

Sigismondo D’India (1582 ?-1629 ?), contemporain de Claudio Monteverdi, est un compositeur parmi les plus importants du début du XVIIe siècle : l’un des pères fondateurs de la musique moderne. La présente thèse entend le situer dans un contexte qui nécessite d’être rappelé et mis à jour, celui de la cour de Turin où le musicien s’est établi de 1611 à 1623, période la plus fructueuse de sa carrière musicale dont l’étude s’organise autour de trois problématiques : la musique, le mécénat et l’identité nobiliaire.Il s’agit, dans un premier temps, d’étudier la circulation des musiciens, artistes, imprimeurs et sources musicales mais également d’analyser certaines œuvres du compositeur. Ainsi, D’India, chanteur, guitariste, compositeur et poète, apparaît comme l’un des musiciens les plus audacieux et les plus singuliers de son temps.Le mécénat artistique accompagne sa carrière musicale : il favorise ses déplacements, relie les différentes villes où se trouvent le musicien et ses dédicataires et facilite l’émulation créatrice. L’étude du mécénat à travers sa production musicale dévoile notamment la multiplicité des rapports entre D’India et ses dédicataires. Enfin, par identité nobiliaire, nous entendons étudier la manière dont le compositeur contribue à la construction de l’identité culturelle d’une cour en même temps qu’il construit son propre statut de noble. L’identité nobiliaire peut être ainsi considérée comme un préalable à l’identité nationale. Nous voulons par ailleurs montrer que D’India remplit parfaitement le rôle de musicien-Gentilhomme et que sa musique participe à la construction d’un modèle d’urbanité Sigismondo D’India, (1582? -1629?) a contemporary of Claudio Monteverdi, was one of the major composers of the early XVIIth century and one of the founding fathers of modern music. This thesis aims at setting him against a background which requires some reminiscing and updating, that of the court of Turin, where the musician settled between 1611 and 1623. It was the most fruitful period of his musical career, the study of which addresses three issues: music, patronage and nobiliary identity.I shall first study the movements of musicians, artists, printers and musical sources, and shall analyse besides some works by the composer. It appears that Sigismondo D’India, together a singer, a guitar-Player, a composer and a poet, stands out as one of the boldest and the most idiosyncratic musicians of his days.His musical career goes hand in hand with artistic patronage, which made his travelling easier, connected the various cities accommodating the musician and his dedicatees and facilitated creative emulation. The study of patronage through D’India’s creativity in music points out, among other things, the numerous relationships between him and his dedicatees.Finally, through the notion of nobiliary identity, I shall focus on the way in which the composer contributed to building up the cultural identity of a court while building up his own status as a nobleman. The nobiliary identity can thus be considered a first step toward national identity. I also aim at showing that D’India was perfectly up to the role of gentleman-Musician, and that his music contributed to building a model of urbanity

Étudiées dans le domaine musical, littéraire ou esthétique, les formes de la variante et de la variation sont appliquées ici à une discipline très différente, plus concrète, le dessin italien de la renaissance. Ce travail présente à la fois la genèse et les formes diverses prises par la variante dessinée à partir de la seconde moitié du XVe siècle pour en comprendre les développements et le plein épanouissement au XVe siècle. Les variantes jouent un rôle de premier plan dans la constitution de répertoires de formes réutilisées par l'atelier ou par ses propres membres, et dans la diffusion des modèles employés par un atelier à diverses fins utilitaires. La typologie des variantes est fondée sur une définition stable où la variante se rapporte à une forme de référence ou invariant dont chaque alternative peut engendrer des développements autonomes, concrétisés ou non par la suite. La variation dans le dessin est ici définie comme une suite de dessins qui modifient les formes ou les contenus thématiques, mais tous développés selon un même principe initial : cette expression de la variation est particulièrement évidente dans les changements iconographiques ou les mutations du thème peuvent en transférer le sens et se déployer au moyen de variantes pour former ensemble une variation. Populaire et aristocratique, païenne et sacrée, grand art et artisanat, art vivant et œuvre de musée, la crèche montre dans un théâtre miniaturisé la scène sacrée de la Nativité, plongée dans une Naples réaliste et codifiée avec des figures que les napolitains commandaient à des artistes de renom. La crèche napolitaine du XVIIIème siècle est le sujet de cette thèse développée en trois parties. 1) L’historique de la crèche napolitaine depuis ses premières expressions plastiques au XIIIème siècle, jusque son âge d’or rendu possible par une révolution technique qui introduit miniaturisation et théâtralité, suivi d’une étude des auteurs des figures de crèche et du collectionnisme qui permit un début de classification et d’intégration du sujet dans l’histoire de l’art. 2) Étude de la théâtralité de la crèche napolitaine en s’appuyant sur l’importance du décor, l’analyse des expressions faciales et des gestes des personnages ainsi que des rôles qu’ils jouent dans le contexte . Suivra l’analyse du récit et de ses acteurs, les différents personnages et les nombreux animaux. 3) Du fait de la complexité et de la singularité matérielle de la crèche, la troisième partie est consacrée à l’étude et analyse non intrusive des multiples matériaux et à la conservation des figures qui la composent. D’abord la technique de réalisation d’une figure de crèche à partir d’un cas particulier, puis, du fait de leur fragilité, l’importante question de la conservation de ces crèches analysée à partir des cas de trois grands musées, étudiés in situ, conservant d’importants ensembles, à Madrid, Munich et New York. Cette thèse tente d’introduire un art souvent privé d’archives et dont les objets sont transformés avec le temps dans la discipline de l’histoire de l’art aux côté de la peinture, la sculpture, et des arts vivants d’inspiration populaire et religieuse The Neapolitan crèche, which experienced its golden age in the 18th century, is an ephemeral "installation" that transgresses and mixes all artistic hierarchies and challenges all aesthetic genres of art history. Popular and aristocratic, pagan and sacred, academic art and craft, living art and museum object , the Neapolitan crèche shows in a miniaturized theatre the sacred scene of the Nativity, immersed in a realistic and codified city of Naples with figures that Neapolitans commissioned from renowned artists. The Neapolitan crèche of the 18th century is the subject of this thesis developed in three parts. 1) The history of the Neapolitan nativity scene from its first plastic expressions in the 13th century to its golden age made possible by a technical revolution that introduced miniaturization and theatricality, followed by a study of the authors of the figures and collecting practices that initiated the first introduction of the creche into the logic of art history. 2) The Study of the theatricality of the Neapolitan crèche based on the importance of the setting, the analysis of facial expressions and gestures of the characters as well as the roles they play in the context. This study is followed by an analysis of the story and its actors, the different characters and the many animals. 3) Due to the complexity and particularity of the crèche, the third part is devoted to the non-intrusive study and analysis of the multiple materials as well as the conservation of the figures. First, the technique of the making of a crèche figure from a singular study case, and then, because of their fragility, the important question of the conservation of the figures. I have focused on the example of important ensembles collected by three large museums, in Madrid, Munich and New York, studied in situ. This thesis attempts to introduce an art that is often deprived of archives and whose objects are transformed over time, into the discipline of art history along with painting, sculpture, and popular and religiously inspired living arts

Le présent travail de recherche porte sur la réception des fabulae de Héro et Léandre et de Pyrame et Thisbé dans la littérature italienne du XVIIe siècle, en particulier dans quatre textes différents par genre, style et origine géographique : Gli amori infelici di Leandro ed Ero (1618), l'idylle de Giovanni Capponi, Hero et Leandro (1630) et La Tisbe, respectivement la «Favola maritima » et la «lieta favola» de Francesco Bracciolini, et Il Leandro (1679), le drame musical de Badovero-Pistocchi. La décision de mettre les deux mythes en relation étroite l'un avec l'autre se fonde sur certaines considérations exposées dans des études historico-philologiques faisant autorité sur l'origine du roman et de la nouvelle grecque (Rodhe 1876, Lavagnini 1921, Cataudella 1957) où les deux fabulae sont citées comme des exemples de proto-romans ou de proto-nouvelles en raison de la présence récurrente de topoi propres au roman hellénique. À partir d'une analyse thématique et rhétorique du « patrimoine génétique commun » aux deux mythes ou, mieux, du « noyau hellénique-romanesque » appartenant aux versions classiques de référence (Mus.; Ov., Her.18-19, Ov. Met., IV, 55-166), le parcours d’analyse des réécritures modernes des oeuvres à l’étude suit trois axes principaux : la vérification de l’idée de correspondance entre les deux mythes, déjà présente dans les versions anciennes, médiévales et de la Renaissance, ainsi que l’identification de leurs modalités d’expression dans les textes du XVIIe siècle ; l’analyse des processus de réécriture du mythe au sein des nouvelles métamorphoses baroques et des nouveaux hybrides scéniques, tant en référence à l'interaction entre le «noyau hellénique-romanesque», l'héritage tragique et les influences du genre idyllique et pastoral, qu’en ce qui concerne la relation entre le romanesque hellénique et le romanesque baroque ; la focalisation sur l'aspect herméneutique permettant de comprendre le sens nouveau assumé par le mythe pour les deux couples d'amants : clementia ou sententia ? The decision to place the two myths in close relationship with each other was inspired by some remarks found in authoritative historical-philological studies on the origin of the ancient Greek novel and the Greek novella (Rodhe 1876, Lavagnini 1921, Cataudella 1957) where the two fabulæ are cited as examples of proto-novels for the insistent recurrence in them of topoi proper to the Hellenic novel. Starting from an accurate thematic-rhetorical analysis of the 'common heritage', or rather, of the 'Hellenic-romance nucleus' belonging to the classic versions of reference (Mus.; Ov., Her. 18-19; Ov. Met., IV, 55-166), the course of the research in modern rewritings in question follows three main coordinates: verification of the idea of correspondence between the two myths, already found in the ancient, medieval and Renaissance versions, and identification of the ways in which it is expressed in seventeenth-century texts; analysis of the processes of rewriting the myth within the new Baroque metamorphoses and the new stage hybrids, both in reference to the interaction between the 'Hellenic-romance nucleus', tragic inheritance and influences of the idyllic and pastoral genre, as well as in regard to the relationship between Hellenic and Baroque romance; focus on the hermeneutic aspect within which to read the new meaning assumed by the myth: clementia or sententia for the two couples of lovers?

L'opéra, ou melodramma, est l'un des phénomènes culturels les plus importants de l'Italie du XVIIIe siècle. D'après Des Brosses, en cette époque ce genre semblait même être plus populaire que le théâtre parlé. L’importance et la popularité du melodramma dans la vie sociale et culturelle d'Italie étaient telles que de nombreuses parodies et satires musicales ont été écrites sur ce genre. Au XVIIIe siècle, ces «opéras sur l'opéra» ont acquis une telle importance, qu'ils constituèrent un «micro-genre» en soi. Des nombreux musicologues affirment que ce «micro-genre» a existé de 1715 à 1827. Ces opéras sont surnommés, dans la littérature musicologique, metaopera ou metamelodramma. L'objectif de la thèse est d'analyser les parodies et satires ayant pour sujet le métier des musiciens et chanteurs actifs dans l'opéra, du point de vue des musiciens eux-mêmes. Ceci nous permet de découvrir des références se rapportant à la pratique, les habitudes ou les clichés de la profession (pratiques musicales, situation sociale des musiciens, etc.), qui ne figurent pas forcément dans les sources historiques et critiques habituelles. L'analyse de ces œuvres fournit une opportunité de plonger dans l'univers de la production musicale du XVIIIe siècle, celle-ci étant parodiée et critiquée par la satire avec son propre langage, ses propres acteurs et protagonistes. Ces œuvres, malgré leur caractère caricatural, constituent une réflexion des musiciens, librettistes, compositeurs et autres acteurs de la scène musicale sur leur propre profession, et éclairent de manière comique et vivante la situation du métier au XVIIIe siècle Opera, or melodramma, is one of the most important cultural phenomena of eighteenth-century Italy. According to Des Brosses (1709-1777) this genre seemed to be even more prized than spoken theater. The importance and popularity of the melodramma in Italian social and cultural life was such that many musical parodies and satires were produced. In the eighteenth-century, these "operas about opera" became so popular, they constituted a separated "micro-genre", which musicologists claim existed between 1715 and 1827. These operas are called, in the musicological literature, metaopera or metamelodramma. The aim of this thesis is to analyse the parodies and satires which deal with the profession of the musicians and singers active in opera, from the point of view of the musicians themselves. This allows us to identify references relating to the practice, habits, and clichés of the profession (musical practices, social situation of musicians, etc.), which do not necessarily appear in usual historical and critical sources. The analysis of these works provide an unique opportunity to explore the world of the musical production of the eighteenth century, which is parodied and criticized by satire in its own language and by its own actors and protagonists. Despite their caricatural nature, these works are a reflection of musicians, librettists, composers, and other actors of the musical scene on their own profession, and illustrates in a comical and lively way, the situation of the musical business in the eighteenth century

Fellini ou l'imagination à la barre! Grand chef d'orchestre du fantasme, de la fantaisie, des extravagances! Créateur de personnages monstrueux, de situations aberrantes, de scènes somptueuses, de tableaux étonnants, d'ambiances merveilleuses ! Tout cela est vrai, mais Fellini est en même temps un témoin, un observateur, un chroniqueur de son temps. Dans ses films, on retrouve successivement l'Italie depuis les années 1950 jusqu'en 1980. Ses fantasmes sont inscrits dans une culture, un espace, un temps. Ce ne sont pas des fantasmagories sans rapport avec l'histoire et l'évolution de la société. La reconquête de la confiance des fidèles par l'Église se traduit par une modernisation et l'instauration de structures ecclésiastiques locales. La formation et l'apprentissage sont placés au centre de la politique menée par la curie romaine et les épiscopats locaux. Ces principes sont soutenus par la résurgence et la fondation de nouvelles compagnies religieuses ou associations laïques, répondant aux besoins quotidiens des populations. Le processus d'évangélisation passe également par la diffusion d'une nouvelle forme d'art capable de susciter un sentiment de grandeur et de richesse. Le baroque s'affirme comme un outil pédagogique indispensable dont les traces, encore actuelles, attestent de la magnificence. Le renouveau du message catholique, suite au concile de Trente, connaît cependant une application relative selon les territoires. Il apparaît à cet égard intéressant d'étudier l'impact de cette contre-Réforme sur la manière de vivre sa foi au sein de trois espaces liés d'un point de vue culturel et géographique que sont la Corse, Gênes et le comté de Nice The council of Trent held at the end of the 16th century embodies main reforms to carry out in order to restore the Church’s image. A new structural and human approach is put forward in response to the critics addressed by Protestants and some Catholics. The regaining of the faithful’s trust, wanted by the Church, has led to a modernization and to the creation of local ecclesiastic structures. Training and learning have been put at the center of the policy conducted by the roman Curia and local episcopacies. This principles are supported by the renewal or the creation, of both religious societies and non-religious associations, able to meet the daily requirements of populations. Process of evangelization also goes through spreading of a new type of art, fostering a sense of glory and wealth. By doing so, the baroque asserts itself as a necessary educational tool, traces of which remain present until today and bear witness to its magnificence. However, the renewed catholic message, after the council of Trent, was not put in application equally in all the provinces. In this regard, it is interesting to study the impact of this counter-reformation on the way to live out is faith in this three culturally and geographically linked areas that are Corsica, Genoa and the county of Nice

El hilo conductor de la tesis doctoral es el análisis del fenómeno del patronazgo español en Cerdeña en época barroca, a partir de las obras de arte que encargaron los virreyes y obispos de la isla. Estos personajes, escogidos directamente por el rey por su probada fidelidad a la Corona, formaban la élite que gozaba de la mayor visibilidad política y económica a nivel local. Conocedores del valor del arte como instrumento de poder, algunos de ellos patrocinaron importantes empresas artísticas durante su estancia sarda, como la decoración de iglesias y capillas, la ejecución de monumentos funerarios, el encargo de pinturas y esculturas para sus residencias particulares o la organización de fiestas efímeras. Algunas de estas obras, por su gran envergadura, son consideradas unánimemente como los ejemplos más interesantes de barroco en Cerdeña, por lo cual no son inéditas. Al contrario, a lo largo de las últimas décadas se han hecho avances importantes en su conocimiento, sobre todo gracias a una serie de estudios estilísticos y documentales que han permitido fecharlas e identificar sus autores. No obstante, faltaba una investigación que hiciese hincapié en su contenido intelectual, vinculándolas a los personajes que las patrocinaron y explorando de manera sistemática aspectos como su deseo de expresar riqueza o poder, la propaganda religiosa o política, la identidad nacional o cultural, etc. El objetivo principal de la tesis, pues, ha sido el de realizar un estudio de conjunto que abarque la labor de promoción artística de los patronos más importantes que residieron en Cerdeña, trazando una visión panorámica y evaluando el peso del arte que se hizo por su encargo. Por ello, el fundamento de la investigación se encuentra en los estudios de patronazgo artístico, que reivindican el papel del comitente en la gestación de la obra de arte, y las teorías que interpretan la imagen como documento histórico o testimonio visual, cuyo principal representante es Peter Burke. El diseño metodológico se ha desarrollado a través de dos fases paralelas. La primera ha consistido en la observación atenta y minuciosa de las obras, que ha sido acompañada por un riguroso análisis iconográfico-iconológico, para “leer” correctamente su significado simbólico. La segunda se ha resuelto en un trabajo de búsqueda y consulta de documentación primaria y secundaria relacionada con los patronos. Una vez recogidos los datos, se ha realizado una operación de análisis crítico para establecer los vínculos entre los materiales encontrados y las obras de arte. El trabajo de campo se ha realizado inicialmente utilizando los recursos disponibles en la ciudad de Barcelona, extendiéndose posteriormente a varios archivos y bibliotecas de ciudades como Cagliari, Madrid, Toledo, Ávila, Génova, Roma, Nápoles y Palermo. Es decir, teniendo en cuenta el perfil internacional de los patronos estudiados, que a lo largo de sus carreras políticas y eclesiásticas eran desplazados en distintos territorios bajo dominio español, se ha tratado fundamentalmente de ir siguiendo sus pasos. La decisión de centrar las búsquedas documentales en torno a las figuras de los comitentes, y no únicamente en los artistas, como se había hecho en la práctica totalidad de las investigaciones anteriores, ha permitido localizar numerosas fuentes inéditas que han ayudado en el proceso de lectura de la imagen y al mismo tiempo han revelado que los casos de patronazgo español en Cerdeña fueron más numerosos de los que se conservan hoy en día. La puesta en común de los casos particulares ha permitido apreciar la diversidad de los intereses artísticos de los virreyes y obispos estudiados, pero a la vez identificar divergencias y convergencias entre sus políticas culturales y, tras la correspondiente evaluación crítica, delinear unas tendencias comunes y proponer un modelo interpretativo del fenómeno del patronazgo español en Cerdeña. This thesis analyses the artistic policy of the most important patrons who lived in Sardinia during the Baroque age: the viceroys and the Spanish bishops. During their stay in Cagliari, these aristocrats, chosen by the king for their loyalty to the Crown, promoted and supported many different forms of visual arts. Some of them concentrated on embellishing the town’s cathedral and royal palace, others made important donations to churches, others promoted the ephemeral arts and others acquired paintings, sculptures, relics or devotional objects that afterwards they brought with them back to Spain. Recently several stylistic and documentary studies have been published on these artworks, allowing to date them and to identify their authors. However, most researchers have focused their attentions on the artists, so that very little was known about their clients. The principal aim of the thesis, thus, is to propose an overall reflection on Spanish patronage in Sardinia. As far as the methodology is concerned, the research process started by observing and examining the artworks using the iconographic-iconological method, in order to investigate their intellectual and symbolic meaning. Afterwards, I carried out a meticulous research of primary and secondary sources related to the patrons, with the purpose of proposing a new approach to their artistic interests and establishing the links between their political and ecclesiastical career and the artworks they commissioned. The data collection process began in the archives and libraries of Barcelona. The second step was extending the research to other cities, such as Cagliari, Madrid, Toledo, Avila, Genova, Rome, Naples and Palermo. In fact, the Spanish viceroys and bishops were often displaced in different territories within the Spanish empire. In order to fully understand their artistic commissions, thus, it is necessary to “follow their footsteps” and consult widely scattered sources. Finally I analysed and compared the data with the purpose of offering a panoramic view of the artistic policy of viceroys and bishops. The analysis of individual case studies shows diversities, but at the same times reveals similarities within their artistic interests, allowing proposing an interpretative model of the phenomenon of Spanish patronage in Sardinia.

An overview of life in turin and of the musical institutions housed at the court is followed by a study of the structure of the profession, presenting, in the form of chronologically-organised entries (in the first two volumes), those aspects, known today, of the careers of the musicians. This information is arranged in the following categories: the great clans of dynasties of musicians; the "maitres de chapelle"; the organist; the singers; the "cabinet francais" of christine of france; french instrumentalists of the 17th century; their italian counterparts in the 18th century; and the dancing masters. A selection of five works, transcribed and realised in modern scores, has been made in order to illustrate turin's role in the development of the motet-cantata (montalto), the cantata (g. -a. Ce travail propose une serie d'analyses de diverses formes de realisations artistiques decoratives, fixes ou ephemeres, concues a rome et a florence pour francois 1er et ferdinand 1er de medicis, essentiellement entre 1575 et 1590. Les modalites du decor sont a la fois materielles et thematiques. Materielles avec des voutes peintes a fresque, des plafonds a caissons ornes de tableaux, des grottes couvertes de substances minerales diversement modelees ou agencees, des structures ephemeres peintes ou sculptees, des decors et costumes de theatre, des allegories vivantes, des automates , etc. Thematiques puisque la these est divisee en quatre sections consacrees au rapport du decor (1) au politique a travers les ideologies territoriales et dynastiques, (2) a la cosmologie (elements, planetes), (3-4) aux sciences de la nature (ornithologie, botanique, mineralogie, teratologie), au collectionnisme eclectique et a la poesie burlesque. Le premier point traite des entrees princieres a florence et a pise, et de leur rapport aux decors fixes. The modalities of the decorations are both material and thematic. Material with frescoes, easel or wood-paintings in ceilings, grottoes covere d by mineral substances variably mould or designed, ephemeral structures, settings and costumes, automatons, etc. Thematic since this thesis is divided into four sections dedicated to the relationships of the decoration with (1) the political sphere as seen through territorial and dynastic ideologies, (2) to cosmology (elements, planets), (3-4) to the natural sciences (ornithology, botany, mineralogy, teratology), as well as to eclectical collectionism. La suivant thèse se est fixé le but de enquêter, le plus à fond possible, le rapport entre le écriture dramaturgique de Jean-Baptiste Andreini et son grand amour pour les théâtres en musique. Aussi, on étudiera ainsi, le complexe rapport de Andreini avec sa femme, Virginia Ramponi, que fuit une de les plus important chanteuses de son siècle. En effet, à travers Virginia, Jean-Baptiste, connût plusieurs compositeurs, comme les frères Monteverdi, qui fumez fondamental pour la naissance de l’opéra lyrique. À travers l’analyse de tous ses pièces dans une perspective musicale, l’expérimentalisme, pour l’écriture d’Andreini, acquerra une nouvelle importance et valeur, et inédits aspects de son travaille come homme de théâtre, comédien et dramaturge, verrai à la lumière. Enfin, une particulaire attention, serai réservé à les deux tournées françaises d’Andreini. La première en 1622-25, et la deuxième, en 1643-47. Ces deux voyages françaises sont très intéressant puisque dans la première tournée, Jean-Baptiste édita le plus musicale de tout ses pièces, La Ferinda, et pendant le deuxième tournée, qu’il fis peu auparavant de mourir, c’est possible, qu’il eut participé à les mises en scène de les deux opéra lyrique Orfeo et La Finta Pazza, les premières opéra en absolu représenté en Frace This study, at the beginning, had as principal purpose to analyze the interconnections between dramatic works of the playwright and actor, Giovan Battista Andreini, and the different types of theatres for music of baroque age. But, when the research work is started, the original objective, soon, is change. In fact, it’s appear clear that the music dimension in Andreini’s plays was, in truth, a manifestation of his great desire of innovation. So, the music prospective has become the best way to put in the right light the dramatic experimentalism of this playwright, one of the most important for the history of Commedia dell’Arte and Italian literature, and to discovered many, unknown, aspects of his poetry and personal philosophy. The Andreini’s plays was investigated to contextualize them in the Italian and French spectacular societies of Seventeenth century, because Giovan Battista had spent long periods of his career, besides his own country, also in Paris, working at the court of Maria de’ Medici and his son, Luigi XIII

Athanasius Kircher (1601/2-1680) fut l'un des acteurs de la respublica literarum du XVIIe siècle et l'un des derniers polygraphes du monde occidental. Ce travail porte sur son autobiographie (Vita), publiée à Augsbourg en édition posthume en 1684 par les soins de l'Académicien allemand Hieronymus Ambrosius Langenmantel (1641-1718) dans un volume qui inclut également des lettres faisant partie de la correspondance de Kircher. Le texte original latin de la Vita est amendé, traduit en français et analysé : une confrontation directe est instituée entre les éléments essentiels de la biographie de Kircher (préalablement reconstruits grâce aux sources manuscrites et à la littérature secondaire) et le récit autobiographique. Les données tirées de l'exégèse du texte sont ensuite employées pour aborder d'un nouveau point de vue certains lieux de la biographie de Kircher qui ont toujours fait l'objet de descriptions divergentes de la part des critiques. Les problèmes d'harmonie interne et de fiabilité historique du texte, les éléments suggérant une rédaction non aboutie ou non accomplie de l'œuvre, la réélaboration et l'omission des données et la fictionnalisation délibérée sont soulignés afin de de mettre en évidence des modalités de fonctionnement du récit qui semblent obéir à des critères précis de présentation des données. À travers une évaluation de la place que cet ouvrage occupe à l'intérieur de la tradition littéraire de l'autobiographie et à travers l'étude du rapport existant entre le récit de Kircher et l'Autobiographie (1675) du cardinal Roberto Bellarmino, une hypothèse est avancée concernant la raison de la rédaction de la Vita et son dessein caché

I manoscritti qui considerati vanno dal Seicento al primo Ottocento, e documentano una fase della letteratura italiana che continuava a interessare lettori e collezionisti. Un caso esemplare è il manoscritto Ob.37, raccolta calligrafica, che contiene soprattutto sonetti, canzoni e poesie musicali senza indicarne il nome dell’autore. La prima menzione di questo supporto è nel catalogo Scheureck del 1755, ma non sappiamo altro sulla sua acquisi-zione. Il lavoro erudito consiste nell’identificare gli autori delle poesie, e rintracciare i testi anche in codici simili della stessa epoca. Interessante pure un gruppo di manoscritti che portano le segnature Mscr.Dresd.Ob.48.b, Ob.48.c, Ob.48.d, Ob.48.e, Ob.48.f, Ob.48.g, Ob.48.ga e Ob.48.h, prevalentemente libretti di opere liriche, con l’eccezione del Falcone, commedia la cui esecuzione va collocata a Vienna intorno al 1740. Di qualche interesse ne è la lingua, aperta sia a modi proverbiali, letterari o popolari, sia a sezioni in dialetto veneto e lombardo, che si possono paragonare a quelle della commedia dell’arte fino ai primi successi di Carlo Goldoni.

Abstract:

Dans cette thèse, on examine les différents aspects de la réception et de la fortune des contes de la baronne d’Aulnoy à la fin du XIXe siècle, permettant d’enrichir les analyses critiques à propos des contes de fées classiques et de leur perception en époque moderne. L’étude porte, en un premier temps, sur le domaine de nouvelles éditions des contes qui voient le jour à partir de premières années du XIXe siècle, jusqu’aux premières années du XXe. La composition des volumes et la forme des textes permettent de comprendre comment c’est uniquement à la fin du XIXe siècle que Mme d’Aulnoy commence à être considérée comme une auteure classique : une écrivaine qui propose aux lecteurs des contes merveilleux originaux et non pas une simple transcriptrice de contes folkloriques. L’analyse des réécritures et des transpositions permet, en revanche, de comprendre le rôle de la baronne et de son œuvre dans le renouvellement du merveilleux de la fin du siècle, car les réécritures complètes de certains de ses contes présentent des traits stylistiques propres au genre du merveilleux perverti. Cela permet de saisir l’intérêt que les auteurs de cette époque portent sur la figure de l’écrivaine : elle est perçue comme un modèle, au même niveau que Charles Perrault, ce qui justifie la présence de réécritures complètes de son œuvre. D’un autre côté, certaines reprises de thèmes, motifs et personnages, permettent de mieux comprendre l’importance du souvenir littéraire dans le renouvellement du genre merveilleux. Les transpositions pour le théâtre sont, enfin, présentes uniquement dans la culture anglaise. Les contes de la baronne d’Aulnoy qui participent à ce phénomène permettent un profond renouvellement de certains genres du théâtre classique et la création de nouveaux, qui présentent, pour la première fois, le thème du grotesque. Ce travail permet, donc, de souligner la portée et l’importance de la production d’une écrivaine qui a été, pendant longtemps oubliée et de mettre en relief en quel sens ses contes merveilleux ont contribué à enrichir plusieurs genres et plusieurs modèles relevant de la culture de la fin du siècle In this thesis, the variousaspects of the reception and the fortune of the fairy tales of the baroness of d’Aulnoy at the end of the 19th century are examined, allowing enriching the critical analyses about classical fairy tales and their perception in modern time. In first place, new editions of the tales, printed from from first years of the 19thcentury, until the first years of 20th are examined. The composition of volumes and the shape of the texts make it possible to understand how it is only at the end of the 19th century that Mrs. d'Aulnoy starts to be regarded as a classical author. She begins to be considered as a writer that proposes to the readers original marvelous tales and not a simple rewriter of folk tales. The analysis of the rewritings and the transpositions allows, on the other hand, to understand the role of the baroness and her work in the renewal of marvelous literature at the end of the century. In fact, the complete rewritings of some of its tales present some stylistics features that can be connected with the perverted marvelous, typical of the end of the century. That makes it possible to seize the interest which the authors of this time carry on the figure of the writer. She begins to be perceived as a model, on the same level as Charles Perrault, which justifies the presence of complete rewritings of its work. On the other hand, the presence of some themes and characters that can originally be found in Mrs. d’Aulnoy’s works inside new works allows to better understand the importance of the literary memory in the renewal of marvelous literary genre. In the end, the transpositions for the theater can only be found in the English culture. The tales of the baroness d’Aulnoy which take part in this phenomenon allow a deep renewal of certain genres of the classical theater and the creation of new ones, presenting, for the first time, characters and topics linked to grotesque. This work allows therefore, to stress the range and the importance of the production of a writer which, has been forgotten for a long time and to highlight in which direction its tales contributed to enrich the marvelous at the end of the century

L’Ambassade de France à Rome fut, au cours du dix-huitième siècle, l’un des pôles principaux pour l’organisation de fêtes, de mascarades, de conversations, et tout ceci put contribuer à célébrer la gloire et le faste de la monarchie et du « Roi Très-Chrétien ».Cette étude a pour ambition de fournir une large documentation qui permette de comprendre en quelles occasions la musique était convoquée dans le cadre de l’institution française, qui illustre les buts, principalement politiques, de l’utilisation de la musique par les ambassadeurs, qui éclaire les moments, les lieux et les modalités de l’exécution musicale.La partie principale, et la plus intéressante, de ce travail est consacrée aux commandes de musique que les différents ambassadeurs de France près le Saint-Siège passèrent en des occasions particulières liées à la famille royale.Beaucoup plus complexe s’est avérée la reconstitution des événements pour lesquels, sans être directement commandée par les ambassadeurs, la musique était traditionnellement liée aux festivités françaises : c’est le cas des fêtes organisées pour la Saint-Louis, le 25 août, ou pour la Sainte-Lucie, le 13 décembre. En ces deux occasions se déroulaient traditionnellement des fêtes « mécénées », et donc financées, par les ambassadeurs.Durant la période comprise entre 1724 et 1791, les ambassadeurs de France à Rome utilisèrent l’art musical comme miroir grossissant pour leur devoir principal : représenter leur monarque avec un luxe, une magnificence et une générosité extraordinaires, afin d’attirer l’estime et l’admiration de toute la Cour de Rome During the 18th century, the French embassy to the Holy See was one of the most important production centres of music, soirée, masquerade and festivity. In particular, this study provides large documentation to investigate the events in which the music was performed, the purpose of the use of music during these events and to characterize places, conditions and times of the musical performanceThe main contribution of this study is the analysis of the new music commissioned in honour of the french royal family by the French ambassadors in the Holy See.More complex is the analysis of the events in which music was traditionally “linked” to the french festivities: this is the case of the feasts organized for the 25th August in honor of St. Louis or the 13th December in honour of St. Lucia.
