Abstract: Prospecting of fungal enzymes has been largely studied in recent years, especially by means of Solid-State Fermentation (SSF). The search for microorganisms' enzymes able to degrade lignocellulosic material, mainly those of filamentous fungi, has attracted interest for application in biotechnological processes, such as in production of cellulosic ethanol from sugarcane bagasse. Aspergillus species are well known for their capability to produce cellulosic and hemicellulosic enzymes complex and the search for strains with this potential is an important challenge. Aspergillus labruscus ITAL 22.223 is a filamentous fungus recently isolated in south of Brazil with unknown potential to produce cellulolytic or hemicellulolytic enzymes. This study aimed the production and quantitation of enzymes of the complex cellulolytic (total cellulose, endoglucanase and and β-glucosidase) and hemicellulolytic (xylanse) obtained under solid-state fermentation using agroindustrial waste and product as substrates. According to this, the greatest enzymatic productions of xylanase (74.83 U/g of substrate) and β-glucosidase (6.35 U/g of substrate) were obtained using wheat bran and oat bran as substrates during SSF fermentation, respectively. Taking in account the best production of xylanase in SSF, some biochemical characteristics were determined for the enzyme contained in the crude extract. Optimal of temperature for enzyme activity was 55ºC and optimal pH was 5.5. Regarding its thermal stability, ... (Complete abstract click electronic access below)

Abstract:
The principal objective of this research is to design a system that manage to reduce the cost and time in the construction of non-structural masonry walls. To achieve this, it has been designed a Mortarless Dry-Stacked Interlocking Masonry Clay Bricks which verifies all the imputable codes. To determine the performance of the system, the bricks were made and a wall with typical measurements was built. The results for this study are 17% of reduction in the direct cost (considering the whole wall) and 76 % less time used (alone in the brick seating).

Bigalke, Zachary. "“If They Can Die for Italy, They Can Play for Italy!”: Immigration, Italo-Argentine Identity, and the 1934 Italian World Cup Team." Thesis, University of Oregon, 2017. http://hdl.handle.net/1794/22654.

Abstract:
In 1934, four Argentine-born soccer players participated for the Italian team that won the FIFA World Cup on home soil. As children born to parents who participated in a wave of Italian immigrants that helped reshape Argentine society in the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries, these four players were part of a larger trend where over one hundred Argentine soccer players of Italian descent were signed by Italian clubs in the late 1920s and through the 1930s. This thesis examines the liminal space between Italian and Argentine identity within the broader context of diaspora formation in Argentina through a look at these four exemplars of the transatlantic talent shift. Utilizing sources that include Italian and Argentinian newspapers and magazines, national federation documents, and census and parish records, the thesis reveals the fluidity and temporality of national identity among Italo-Argentine immigrant offspring during the early twentieth century.

Abstract:
Increasing interest in the quality of undergraduate education has led many U.S. institutions of Higher Education to focus their attention on the qualifications and careful preparation of Teaching Assistants (TAs) in general (Thornburg et al, 2000) and International Teaching Assistants (ITAs) in particular (Tang & Sandell, 2000), especially since the number of nonresident aliens in the graduate population has been rising steadily (Pae, 2001). This dissertation reports the findings of a study which investigated the proposition that when international graduate students are appointed International Teaching Assistants (ITAs), they need specific kinds of mentoring and support that differ from that of their counterparts, American Teaching Assistants (ATAs) because the issues applicable to ITAs encompass more than developing appropriate and efficient teaching behaviors. ITAs must also attend to their competencies regarding the English language, the American culture, and pedagogy, since their ability to communicate their knowledge as both graduate students and teaching assistants is sometimes limited by their competencies in the L2 language, culture, and pedagogy. This multi-case study evaluates the impact of an ITA Program on twenty-three ITAs as graduate students and teaching assistants, and offers an emic perspective on the teaching behaviors and communication skill changes ITAs experienced after participating in the optional semester-long ITA Development Program at the University of Arizona. This research study also provides an emic perspective on how ITAs see themselves in the different roles they perform, and it explores the ITAs' definitions and perceptions of teacher "effectiveness" together with those of their undergraduate students. The results of the analyses of data obtained via quantitative and qualitative methods indicate that the participants received positive benefits from the ITA Development Program and significantly improved their language, cultural and teaching competencies in L2. In addition, the findings show that upon completion of the program, ITAs felt more confident and better prepared to fulfill their multiple roles due to the customized support they received, which provided them with reassurance and encouragement throughout the mentoring process.

Baldi, Elio. "Italo Calvino, ovvero, the author in criticism : Calvino's authorial image between metaphors and reading conventions in Italy, the United States and the United Kingdom." Thesis, University of Warwick, 2016. http://wrap.warwick.ac.uk/90136/.

Full text
Abstract:
Italo Calvino is a writer who metamorphoses, but also a highly recognizable writer, whose signature is almost a trademark, whose style is unmistakably his own. This thesis traces some of the reasons for this recognizability of the authorial image of Calvino, an image that has been produced and sculpted over time through different means and media, co-created by critics, readers and Calvino himself. Calvino’s presence in media and paratext, publishing houses and intellectual circles, journals and newspapers forms an intrinsic part of the studied material. This material is explicitly put into dialogue with critical volumes and the way academics arrive at, formulate and circulate knowledge: this enquiry into the form(ul)ation of critical discourses is a crucial part of what is explored in this dissertation. Because Calvino’s circulation is transnational, a comparison is made between the American, British and Italian reception of his works, focusing both on differences and similarities. The question as to what happens to an authorial image in translation and circulation forms a spine throughout the thesis and a conscious effort is made not to separate critics and readers, editorial and academic contexts, high and low literature, Italian and non- Italian readings. A discussion along canonical fault lines is therefore a central part of the dissertation: what has propelled Calvino to the status of ‘modern classic’? Resistance to Calvino’s canonization is discussed in order to get a better sense of the canonical negotiations that surround Calvino. The ‘essential Calvino’ that has been distilled in criticism is put alongside a range of possible, parallel ‘minor Calvini’, that have been less visible because of cultural, material or historical reasons. Ample room will be reserved for a ‘science fiction’ Calvino, who is much more visible in the Anglo-Saxon readings. Other alternative Calvini which are investigated include a feminist Calvino, a posthuman Calvino and an ecologist Calvino.

This paper investigates how professionals within the Italian fashion industrycollaborate and communicate to develop the nation brand Made in Italy. Theproblem of brand confusion, which occurs when the different parties within anation does not cooperate towards a distinct brand message, is analysed.Based on a theoretical review of previous studies in nation branding, interviews and observations in the area of Florence and a desk study ofscientific papers, articles and literature, the model “The Nation Brand Tree”was developed. This was applied to the case of Made in Italy. Conclusions: Thecertification “100% Made in Italy” was proven to be an ineffective solution ofsaving the Italian heritage of craftsmanship and quality. The Italian nationbrand is currently being preserved by private investors, but there is a need forincreased governmental support to create a stronger and unified nation brandfor Made in Italy.

Abstract:

Abstract:
AbstractThe concept of trace is useful for a semiotic reflection upon what is left behind. Similar to the concepts of index and footprint, traces are traditionally described as already signs, or more precisely as something recognized as a sign (Violi, Riv Ital Filos Linguaggio, 2016, http://www.rifl.unical.it/index.php/rifl/article/view/365; Mazzucchelli, Riv Ital Filos Linguaggio, 2015, http://www.rifl.unical.it/index.php/rifl/article/view/312). This act of recognition is fundamentally dependent on a community’s work of interpretation, in order to actualize a potential narration lying in the trace, but what if the promised sense is not grasped? Adopting the notion of intentionality (Greimas and Courtés, Sémiotique: dictionnaire raisonné de la théorie du langage. Hachette, Paris, 1979) to include partially unconscious traces within the sphere of semiotic investigation, the article considers the possibility to conceive traces as paradoxical signs standing for nothing, i.e., signs of insignificance (Leone, On insignificance. The loss of meaning in the post-material age. Routledge, 2020). Through the analysis of digital traces and trolling, (in)significance is disputed on the basis of a proposed paradigm, within which even such seemingly accidental traces may possess profound significance within a digital network constructed of distributed subjectivity. One conclusion drawn from the example is that strong normative claims about what may qualify as significant often conceal an ideologically charged agenda. For this reason in particular, a detailed account of digital traces should be the highest priority of semiotics today.

Abstract:
A pálinka megítélése az elmúlt két évtizedben pozitív irányban változott, a negatív sztereotípiák eltűnőben vannak, sikere töretlen, a fogyasztók számára a pálinka egyre inkább tradíciót, értéket képviselő igazi magyar ital. Jelen tanulmány célja a pálinkához kapcsolódó fogyasztói attitűd komponensek azonosítására irányuló empirikus kutatás szakirodalmi megalapozása. A többlépcsős kutatási folyamat első fázisa a hazai szakirodalom áttekintése, valamint egy 2018- as kvalitatív felmérés értékelése hagyományos tartalomelemzéssel. A pálinkával kapcsolatos attitűdökben az elmúlt 6-10 évben olyan változás történt, ami a pálinka-imázs javulásának lassulását jelentette. Mindenképpen érdemes továbbra is erősíteni a pálinka pozicionálását a minél szélesebb körű ismertség, és elismertség érdekében, hiszen a pálinka értékes alapanyagból előállított hazai szeszes ital, mely kategóriájában értékét tekintve felveszi a versenyt a világszerte elismert konkurens termékekkel.

Abstract:
The International Health Regulations (2005) are legally binding on 196 States Parties, Including all WHO Member States. The IHR aims to keep the world informed about public health risks, through committing all signatories to cooperate together in combating any future “illness or medical condition, irrespective of origin or source, that presents or could present significant harm to humans.” Under IHR, states agreed to strengthen their public health capacities and notify the WHO of any such illness in their populations. The WHO would be the centralized body for all countries facing a health threat, with the power to declare a “public health emergency of international concern,” issue recommendations, and work with countries to tackle a crisis. Although, with the sudden and rapid spread of COVID-19 in the world, many countries varied in implementing the WHO guidelines and health recommendations. While some countries followed the WHO guidelines, others imposed travel restrictions against the WHO’s recommendations. Some states refused to share their data with the organization. Others banned the export of medical equipment, even in the face of global shortages. The UN Compliance Research group will focus during the current cycle on analyzing the compliance of the WHO member states to the organizations guidelines during the COVID-19 pandemic.
