Manthei, Jennifer Judith. "Reading race: Adolescent girls in Brazil." Diss., The University of Arizona, 2004. http://hdl.handle.net/10150/290077.

Abstract:
This dissertation investigates the roles of color, class, and gender discourses in the lives of adolescent and post-adolescent girls in Brazil. Specifically, it examines girls' multiple perspectives, embedded in diverse social locations, and the ways in which girls interpret and deploy participular elements of color and class discourses in their projects of self-making. The results of the study provide insight into the diverse ways in which identity discourses may be experienced and a range of perspectives to contribute to qualitative analyses of color identity and relations in contemporary Brazil. Disaggregating the data according to the participants' color and class reveals distinct views on color classification, perceptions of racism, and the role of color in partner preferences. Whereas the lighter/wealthier girls (re)produce discourses of systematic racism, the darker/poorer girls (re)produced discourses of color equality and individualism. A holistic approach to their ideological systems reveals that each group selects discursive elements that grant dignity, self-worth, and personal integrity to their particular social location. The manner in which girls interpret and deploy color images is also variable. For example, the lighter/wealthier girls tended to dismiss the national image of the sexy mulata (female of both African and European heritage) as a product for export, whereas darker/poorer girls appropriated the mulata as a positive model of attractiveness and self-worth in their daily constructions of self. Furthermore, this research discusses how partner expectations and career aspirations are mutually constructive and lead to an ideal life trajectory culminating in financial independence. Although the ideal shared by all young girls, their ability to pursue the trajectory varies, patterned by color and class. The fact that poorer and darker girls cling to high professional goals in an unsupportive environment, bolstered by the ideology of individual willpower, is interpreted as a specifically adolescent discourse of hope. In summary, this dissertation illustrates multiple ways in which discourses of identity may be experienced, interpreted, and deployed in daily life and self-making. Investigating how color discourses are invoked by these adolescent girls representing particular social locations contributes to a more complex, heterogeneous understanding of color identities and relations in contemporary Brazil.

Skinner, Rachel Davidson. "Nísia Floresta: Setting a Foundation for Feminist Literature in Brazil." BYU ScholarsArchive, 2013. https://scholarsarchive.byu.edu/etd/3905.

Full text
Abstract:
Many historians and literary critics recognize the nineteenth-century Brazilian author, Nísia Floresta, as the first feminist in Brazil. Her works, published in Brazil and also in France and Italy, influenced women across borders. This thesis will address the discourse on maternity and education found in her works Opúsculo humanitário, Direitos das mulheres e injustiças dos homens, A mulher, and Conselhos à minha filha. Focusing on gender equality and the position of women in society, Floresta's writings appeared in newspapers, pamphlets and books in the early nineteenth century. Contemporary scholars have given her the title of feminist though Floresta never called herself that, for she offered intriguing support for women's stereotypical role as mothers, as well as addressing the liberal notion of women's education. Floresta's publications are of great value due to the scarcity of women writers during her time and because she offers a rare feminine perspective on society both in Brazil and in Europe.

Abstract:
This thesis addresses, amongst other issues, the phenomenon of protest music with particular reference to Brazil within its pre- and post-dictatorship period. The time-frame being understood as that which finds its roots many decades prior to the 1964 so-called revolution – a de facto¬ military putsch – and comes to flower in the democratic moment of the 1980s and since. The focus will be, eventually, directed to one of the most celebrated Brazilian rock phenomena, the band Legião Urbana, the impact of which still resonates across the artistic, cultural and political scene in Brazil and beyond. In order to establish the context in which such a claim can be viable, the thesis explores the ideological and historical background to the emergence, on a national, and international, stage of something beyond the artistic and cultural ‘dependence’ seing before that period within Brazilian music.

Abstract:
During the 1824 Confederation of the Equator revolt in northeastern Brazil, a middle-class junta rose to power and waged a war against the monarchy in Rio, journalists participating in creating pedagogical ideological pamphlets, actively engaging in battles, and governing until the revolt was suppressed after a few months. Despite the short duration of this rebel government, the Confederation of the Equator and its ideology have been addressed in cultural production by authors and painters associated with different political movements in the nineteenth, twentieth and early twenty-first centuries, including Jõao Cabral de Melo Neto, Carlos Queiroz Telles, Antônio Parreiras, Gustavo Barroso, Cícero Dias, Murillo La Greca, Heloneida Studart, José Pimentel and Câmara Cascudo. This thesis discusses the history of the event, the content of the message of these thinkers, the spread of their ideas over the course of the nineteenth century and the deployment of the Confederation and its ideas by cultural producers in order to prove that this event has had an impact on the arts in Brazil.

This work objective is to establish a relation, starting from the analysis of some of Lima Barreto s works, personal writings, newspaper articles and chronicles, between those characters - created by him - which are, in some way, bound to madness, and the author s questioning view on the new urban scene, then on development, considering two fundamental points: (1) the author s utilitarian conception of literature, by him defended, able to contribute to the fighting against republican regime distortions, and (2) the moment of consolidation of psychiatry, with prominence to the author`s critics towards this science s discriminatory character in early XXth Century.

Bailey, David James. "Naturalism against nature : kinship and degeneracy in fin-de-siècle Portugal and Brazil." Thesis, University of Cambridge, 2017. https://www.repository.cam.ac.uk/handle/1810/270315.

Full text
Abstract:
The present thesis analyses the work of four Lusophone Naturalist writers, two from Portugal (Abel Botelho and Eça de Queirós) and two from Brazil (Aluísio Azevedo and Adolfo Caminha) to argue that the pseudoscientific discourses of Naturalism, positivism and degeneration theory were adapted on the periphery of the Western world to critique the socio-economic order that produced that periphery. A central claim is that the authors in question disrupt the structure of the patriarchal family — characterised by exogamy and normative heterosexuality — to foster alternative notions of kinship that problematise the hegemonic mode of transmitting name, capital, bloodline and authority from father to son. It was this rapidly globalising form of patriarchal capitalism that saw Portugal and Brazil slip into positions of economic disadvantage and dependency, events that were then naturalised in centres of dominance as incidences of national, racial and sexual “degeneracy”. The thesis thus draws links between contemporaneous disquiet about the nation’s race and bloodline; the various “homosexual scandals” that rocked the period; the considerable prevalence of incest and non-normative desire in the literature concerned, and the supposed “inconsistencies” in the style of Lusophone Naturalism that have often been regarded as imperfections in the face of Zola’s model. I propose instead that such adaptations to the Naturalist model can be read as attempts to reassess its potentially marginalising discourse from the margins themselves, exposing something “queer” at the textual, discursive level. This is the process that I call writing “against nature”, relating non-normative kinship to the disruption of the Naturalist aesthetic more generally. Drawing on postcolonial theory, psychoanalysis and queer theory, I argue that the Lusophone Naturalist perspective presents the divided world of the period as anything but a “natural” state of affairs. In this sense, a second line of reasoning is developed: that its authors formed a tentative transatlantic movement that criticised Naturalism as conceived in centres of dominance, calling for a revision of the role that the “scientists” played in shaping and understanding the fin-de-siècle world.

Full text
Abstract:
My dissertation proposes a comprehensive study of the politics of representing the Amazonian territory in literature and culture. Using the context of the Amazonian rubber boom (1879-1912) and its aftermaths in Peru and Brazil, my research evaluates how the Amazon Basin became the focus of political and sentimental debates, triggering discussions to rethink national identity, ethnicity, sovereignty, and modernity at the turn of the twentieth century. Traditionally portrayed as an exotic, primeval land, geographically isolated, and with endless natural resources waiting exploitation by a higher civilizing order, its presence continually frustrated colonizers and investigators who failed to reduce it to a set of manageable meanings. Despite the many books written about the region since its encounter in the sixteenth century to nowadays, the Amazon resists demands to be modern and construed by an imported Western rational. Like the Pampa in Argentina and the Backlands in Brazil, Brazil and Peru's Amazon is a tropical body that calls institutional authority into question.

This dissertation considers a reflective look on theoretical and artistic-literary aspects related to the interpretation of the concept of identity in artists and writers productions from anglophone and lusophone African countries, like Nigéria and Angola, and from Brasil. The study of Wole Soyinka`s autobiographical book, of Pepetela`s (Arthur Pestana`s nickname) historical novel, of part of Glauber Rocha`s correspondence and two films and, finally, of Abdias do Nascimento`s play (Sortilégio), depositions and a newspaper (Quilombo), composed the corpus that made possible the perception of the process of identity construction throughout art and literature. By the agency of the conjunctions between theory and art, Africa and Brazil and among continental, national, group and individual identities, the proposal of interpretation for the term identity (and its implications) was forged keeping in mind the complex structure of the colonial, neocolonial and postcolonial reality and with reference to the cultural dimensions related to the cited countries.

Abstract: Author of a wide range of literary texts, José Lins do Rego presents in his novels a spontaneous, natural style, and a poetic language with strong signs of orality. It can be verified, for example, in Menino de engenho, debut book, published in 1932, in which the autodiegetic narrator joins his childhood memories, determined by the sign of loss, and depicts the historical and social situation in the Northeastern region during the period when the patriarchal family was in decline. Therefore, this dissertation objectives to develop a study about the representation of childhood in the context of the patriarchal family in Brazil and to verify how the social element has an important role in the constitution of the narrative structure, in other words, analyzing how literary form and content are different aspects that complement each other along the story

Abstract:
Antimicrobial resistance (AMR) is a growing problem around the world. To meet the threat of a futurewithout effective treatment of infection, WHO and other authorities have published strategies and actionplans. However, it is unclear to what extent they have been implemented. As the seventh wealthiesteconomy in the world, Brazil could serve as a role model for other fast developing countries in the battleagainst AMR. The objective of this study was to investigate if and how implementation of internationalAMR strategies is addressed in literature, and to describe how such guidelines have been implemented inBrazil. The study was carried out as a literature review of scientific articles and of documents published byBrazilian authorities. In the scientific literature great importance was given to a multidisciplinary approachand to surveillance, with a special emphasis on local data. Brazilian documents showed a focus on healthcare settings and on actions concerning surveillance. Many tools were in place, such as networks and legalframework. Using local data, identifying measures most important for the target group and thenimplementing them, was considered most important. Generally, there was a lack of assessments. Brazil stillhas a long way to go, but has started out well with its focus on surveillance.

Abstract:
No Brasil, todavia, despontou Monteiro Lobato.
This dissertation discusses, from a comparative perspective, the construction of a field for the development and circulation of children’s literature in Argentina and Brazil, between 1915 and 1954. Among other reasons, the issue of children's readings arose in these contexts due to the appropriation of references and initiatives observed in foreign countries, the development and segmentation of the publishing market, and the expansion of scope of the public debate and of policies concerning education. The core problems of this investigation refer to the role played by literary readings in children's upbringing, and to the kind of repertories that were offered, beyond school texts, to this public. Consequently, the analysis focuses on the perspectives that oriented Argentinian and Brazilian authors of children's literature, and on the conduct of mediators devoted to promote or control certain reading habits – not exclusively of works produced locally –, through educational institutions, libraries and publishing houses. Quite often, there were relations between these perspectives and principles that aimed at providing children with an integral formation, based either on modern pedagogy or on the so-called new education, which enhanced the value of literature in the upbringing process. If these intersections encouraged the diffusion, in both countries, of literary readings in childhood, they also helped to shape the profile of the emerging national literature and the mediators' attitudes. In this scenario, taken – mainly in the case of Argentina – by classics of foreign children's literature, just a few writers were able to set apart from the others, the most remarkable example being Monteiro Lobato.

Nelson, Andrew Kelly. "José, Joe, Zé Carioca: Walt Disney's Good Neighbor Colonial "Monument" in Brazil." BYU ScholarsArchive, 2017. https://scholarsarchive.byu.edu/etd/6246.

Full text
Abstract:
Although Walt Disney's early animated feature films were successful, a variety of economic, operational, and external forces required him to continually be on the cutting edge of new ideas and technologies in order for his studio to continue operations. Latin America became the studio's source of inspiration in the early 1940s, sprouting from Walt Disney's involvement with the Office of the Coordinator of Inter-American Affairs. Saludos Amigos and The Three Caballeros were the result. While many critics have decried Disney's involvement in Latin America as being an apparatus of cultural imperialism and economic exploitation, they almost universally give him credit for his pursuit of cultural authenticity within the films. They are, however, sparing in what ways such was done and are reticent in declaring that he fulfilled that quest. As one who was involved politically and economically in the shaping of a nation, with his enterprise benefiting as a result, Walt Disney can in fact be seen as a colonial, imperial power. Within Brazil, José Carioca was the "monument" he erected to that end. Unlike full-fledged colonial figures in earlier centuries, however, his "monument" was overall friendly and was not based on the image of a sovereign leader, but a character that was intended to be seen as native. Where Disney was bound by the interests of the government he represented, and consequentially the Brazilian government, his "monument" was imbued with hues that were inherently skewed toward those entities; however, he worked within those parameters to present a credible image. This thesis seeks to substantiate those ways and how the original monument-like figure Disney erected in the Brazilian public square, the image of José Carioca in Saludos Amigos and The Three Caballeros, led to unity—and not division—as most imperial monuments had done in earlier centuries. A possible explanation as to how Disney's multiple nuanced iterations of the character leads to such critique of the original "monument" will also be provided.

Abstract:
The project is a transnational study of how filmic representations of urban criminals and marginal figures transformed as Brazil, France, and the Maghreb shifted from military governments to liberal democracies. Beyond ideological productions that simply produce positive or negative portrayals, I examine how films made under military regimes invite audiences to identify with anti-heroes while films made under liberal democracies invite admiration of institutional figures, turning standards of good and evil on their head. The anti-authoritarian potential of violence in earlier periods is construed as a failed redemption in later ones. The theoretical background of the project rests on the oppositional and constitutive relationship between the outlaw and the state, the relationship between urban space and criminal personification, and the historical specificity of the transgressive figure's embodiment of socially un/desirable traits. I establish a geographic and conceptual continuity through a comparative postulation of urban citizenship--who belongs to the city and who does not, who is marked in their transgression and who is not, who is laudable bandit and who is condemned. In delving into a face-to-face relationship between the outlaw and the state following an aesthetic and historical tracing of a highly iconic figure at the margins of the law, the project brings statecraft into focus through the use of visual and representational forms.

Abstract:
The aim of this work is to annotate, translate, and comment a part of the writings by Elizabeth Bishop (1911-1979), the North-American writer, who lived in Brazil for approximately twenty years, focusing on her journalistic texts about that country. Her largest piece is a book called Brazil (1962) which was commissioned by the editors of Life magazine. However, the book was rejected by the author who refused to accept the interventions made by the editors. As a result, they co-authored it. Comparing the original (preserved in the Bishop archives at Vassar College) with the published text allows us to compare two different views of Brazil, to highlight similarities and especially the important contrasts between them. A research on the period the book was published focused on the author\'s life, as well as on the history of both Brazil and the U.S.A. helps to understand not only the text itself, but also how it was written and the episodes associated to its edition. The present work includes five additional texts, remains of a project that was abandoned by Bishop: the making of another book on Brazil. Two of these texts have remained unpublished to date, even in English.

This study makes a comparative analysis of some of the major works of literary history of Brazil, published in the nineteenth and early twentieth century, written by Ferdinand Wolf, Silvio Romero and Jose Verissimo. It analyzes the concepts of nationalism, history and literature, relating them to ideas that circulated at the time they were written Le Brésil Littéraire, by Ferdinand Wolf, the History of Brazilian Literature, by Romero, and work namesake, by José Verissimo. Thus, besides analyzing the works together, it recovers the historical significance of these works, since the inserts in the frame of reference current at the time of appearance of the books that comprise the corpus. Assuming that the main characteristic of these texts is the idea of nationalism, it studies the meaning ascribed to this term since the mid-nineteenth through the early twentieth century, when these books were writte. Moreover, the narratives are related to different ways of thinking history, as a discipline, in that period, trying to identify them by how they build the historical explanation. Finally, the ideas we have about the literature are not only articulated the concepts of nationalism and history of those texts convey, but also the thought that it was undertaken

Author of a wide range of literary texts, José Lins do Rego presents in his novels a spontaneous, natural style, and a poetic language with strong signs of orality.

Abstract:
This thesis analyses the evolution of the city of Salvador in the novels of Brazilian writer Jorge Amado in order to identify different conceptualisations and perceptions of the city. For more than half a century, Amado was the best-selling Brazilian author, both in his own country and abroad. His work may be divided loosely into urban and rural novels. The majority of his urban novels focused on Salvador, the capital of Bahia state. Over a 60-year period, Amado portrayed Salvador in different forms: the city started out as a fragmented space in his first novel and was depicted as a potentially syncretic place in his last one. Several studies have analysed Amado’s works from a myriad of perspectives: gender, race, carnivalesque motifs and political history are the most prominent themes in these analyses. However, these studies tend to ignore or downplay the importance of Salvador itself: its transformation across multiple narratives and how the city’s characteristics greatly influence these narratives. The city was the original capital of Brazil, it has one of the largest black populations in the country and a very characteristic syncretic culture that draws on Afro-Brazilian practices. Amado is the best-known chronicler of Salvador. The objective of this dissertation is to assert the importance of Salvador in the writer’s work and in a general discussion of how urban spaces may be conceived and occupied. The evolution of this fictional Salvador takes place over eight novels that represent four different periods of Amado’s work: O País do Carnaval and Suor, the two earliest works; Jubiabá and Capitães da Areia, the socialist realist novels from the late 1930s; A Morte e a Morte de Quincas Berro Dágua and Os Pastores da Noite, two picaresque works from the early 1960s; and finally Dona Flor e Seus Dois Maridos and Tenda dos Milagres, the novels about hybridity from the late 1960s. The analysis of these novels reveals a process which moves towards the creation of an ideal city. To unveil this urban model, this thesis examines Amado’s construct through several city binaries: order versus disorder, upper-class districts versus lower-class areas, as well as racial and cultural binaries. Such an investigation will demand the use of both literary and social theory, including Mikhail Bakhtin’s theory of carnival, concepts of heterotopia as laid out by Michel Foucault and Edward Soja, Richard Sennett’s examination of homogeneous and heterogeneous spaces, and Roberto Da Matta’s analysis of Brazilian society. The starting point for this investigation is Henri Lefèbvre’s concepts of spatial notions (lived and conceived spaces). In the process, this study places Amado’s Salvador in the context of other Brazilian and world cities at the time and probes the ideologies that underlie different perspectives of urban space.

Abstract:
This research aims to study the literary work of the writer Graciliano Ramos (1892-1953), from the state of Alagoas, and seeks to show how this rich literary work can and should be seen as an important contribution to the understanding of Brazil in the first decades of the twentieth century. Graciliano Ramos and Republican Brazil were practically born in the same year, and the writers literary works (fictional or religious) have always been tied to the direction in which the country went. The chronicles, tales, articles, novels, children\'s books and letters written by the novelist, reveal a set of texts that, besides the recognized literary quality, holds a strong power of observation and critique of reality. Graciliano Ramos wrote about the people of the hinterland, the countryside towns, the seaside capital of his State and of the Federal capital. He plunged into situations of deprivation, isolation, injustice, violence, rebellion, resignation and cleverness. He described the clearing, the farms, the suburbs, public offices, newsrooms of newspapers, literary circles. The faces from a country that seems to allow only being referred to by its parts. However, in the work of Graciliano Ramos, these themes revolve around three major issues that cross all texts and guide this study: town and countryside, authoritarianism and democracy, power and literacy. This variety of texts found cohesion from the author\'s study in his socio-political trajectory. And understanding of this trajectory was only possible from the close study of texts by the author. Thus, History of Culture and Literary Studies had to be managed together by the requirement of same demand as author and work always appeared attached. Finally, the \'country with no grace\' and \'modern Brazil\' that appear in the title of this thesis, indicate the degree of contradiction that Graciliano Ramos saw between our formative bases and the promises made in the name of modernity over the fourty years in which he realistically described the country

The growing debate on measuring performance among professionals and researchers from organizational management is still not enough to consolidate the measurement practices in the construction industry. Thus, this study aims to identify the opportunities for improvement of the Performance Measurement Systems (PMS) in construction management. To do so, an analyze of the performance measurement literature was carried out from disciplines as accounting, strategy, human resources, production and operations management, marketing and organizational behavior. This analysis provides a proposition of an audit tool to evaluate the PMS in Construction Companies. The proposed tool was validated by expert researchers with great experience with the PMS theme. The audit tool was used to analyze 22 models identified in the specific literature of PMS in construction over the last 25 years, which provided a mapping of the key features, roles and processes of measurement practices in that industry. This diagnostic use quantitative techniques and explore in depth the qualitative aspects, identifying gaps and opportunities of improvement. After the theoretical study, a multiple case study was carried out in three construction companies from CearÃ, northeast of Brazil. As results of the case studies, an analyzing of the PMS of the companies was carried out. Moreover, propositions of improvements for the PMS were carried out and the audit tool was applied. In following, a matrix that correlates the roles and the processes of a PMS was formulated based in the experience of the same experts that validated the audit tool. With experience acquired, a framework that presents a holistic view of the measurement process was proposed, emphasizing the difference between indicators system and performance measurement system. This framework classify the PMS based on the audit tool and the matrix that correlates the roles and the processes of a PMS. The classification enable that construction companies evaluates if their PMS are able to support the uses to which they were designated. As conclusion, despite of the great number of initiatives to improve the PMS in Construction that were analyzed, the sector need to models of PMS that containing more scathing operational guidelines. If the evolution of PMS in Building Construction it is slow, as pointed out in literature, some evidences that confirm this thesis were mapped that enable propositions of improvement by academics and professionals. A research agenda was suggested, from the gaps and improvement opportunities found.

This research aims to discern what would be the project of nation - we understand nation as a social political project - in the work dedicated to Monteiro Lobato's young public ( 1882- 1948 ), also known as a pedagogic literature. Therein, we believe in the possibility of the author be seen as a member of our social thinkers group, since our hypothesis is that in his juvenile literary gender there is a country vision, a diagnostic and a future project to Brazil. Therefore, we take in discussing the possibility of considering this literature as an element to understand the Brazilian social reality that was constituted in the twenties and thirties years of the last century. We intend to see in Monteiro Lobato's work, one critic of the society that he lived, like a writer that besides being worried about the esthetics and linguistics questions of his time was also always ready to formulate critics, to the intellectuals and to the elite that, according to him, were just observing the social, economical and political problems without proposing any changing alternatives.

Abstract:

This work discusses the literary production of women in the magazine A Sempre-Viva, published in Curitiba, in 1924/1925. There is an investigation about the place of the feminine subject in this publication, based on Gender Cultural Studies. In order to accomplish that goal, it was necessary to study the history of western women, which explains the reasons for their submission over the centuries, as well as the feminism, which explains how they reacted to that domain. Furthermore, the history of the press – feminine and feminist – was also analysed. In Brazil, it is closely related to literature. The few female writers who succeeded in publishing were fighting the rules, which were very strict, keeping women only in private places. That is why many writers used pseudonyms. At the end of the work it is possible to conclude that the magazine organizers themselves were forgotten.

Abstract: This research analyzes the representations of violence that permeates fiction The Tower of Glass, by Ivan Angelo, a book plural in its themes and formats. Paying attention to the types of violence represented and how they are constructed literary, the textual analysis takes place in a centrifugal motion: from the significant of the fiction to its interrelation with other speeches that touch the violence, for example literature, philosophy, historiography and journalism. The Tower of Glass, a verisimilar fiction and with historicist content, show us, on the one hand, representations of multiple violence, bodily or not, that spread throughout society. On the other, through the symbol of the Tower of Glass, makes possible to question the violence of the state and, especially, surveillance, control and the powers exercised laterally in society, breaking, then, with the dichotomous views about violence (repression / revolutionary) and power (dominant / dominated). The Glass House permits finally (re) thinking the meanings of violence (and power) in late 1970, signaling some continuity between those years and today

Abstract:
This article analyses the relationship between History and Literature from the notion of \"backwoods\" concept present in Euclides da Cunha and Caio Prado Júnior\'s works. The differences and similarities between the History and the Literature disciplines are discussed, starting with their methods and narratives. We address Euclides da Cunha\'s writings in which the reports of travelling naturalists play a key role in establishing the \"consortium of sciences and arts\" and in defining \"backwoods\" as an isolated and depopulated place. Caio Prado Júnior\'s texts also reveal the importance of these travellers\' reports in developing a materialist interpretation of the Brazilian History, although his definition of \"backwoods\" embraces only the semi-arid region of Northeastern Brazil. In both analyses, the rural work stands out as an important element to compose our nationality. According to Euclides da Cunha, it is so due to this character\'s ethnic and racial attributes. On the other hand, Caio Prado Júnior considers the socioeconomic conditions.

Abstract:
This study aims to investigate the cultural agenda of the Brazilian communist intellectuals in the 1940s and 1950s, during which time the world experienced a rearrangement of political, economic and military powers with the onset of the Cold War. The clash between the two antagonistic superpowers - the United States and the Soviet Union - also took place in the ideological field, through intense cultural propaganda fostered by both sides in order to attract the intellectuals and public opinion to their sphere of influence. We seek to identify key issues and activities that engaged Brazilian leftish intellectuals in this scenario. Thereto this work was based in three communist cultural magazines as research sources - Literatura (Rio de Janeiro), Fundamentos (São Paulo) and Horizonte (Porto Alegre) - published between 1946 and 1956. These magazines conveyed meaningful discussions about literature and arts as ideological weapons, as well as on the role of the writer and the artist in politics and in the democratization of culture. Special attention has been dedicated to the conferences sponsored by the Brazilian Association of Writers (Associação Brasileira dos Escritores - ABDE), the activities comprising the Movement for World Peace an international mobilization in which Brazilian intellectuals had a large participation - as well as to the formulations about the aesthetics of socialist realism in the early twentieth century in USSR and its dissemination in Brazil in the postwar era, through the debates and interpretations that have permeated the Brazilian communist cultural agenda.

Abstract:
At the present Master Thesis, my purpose is to investigate the circulation of the work by the contemporary Brazilian author Bernardo Carvalho in Portugal through the reading and the analysis of the critical resources produced in academic context, such as journals, Master Thesis, and Doctoral Dissertations, as well as the materials that were published by the Portuguese press. I also shall verify the means of production (from the authors work until the text circulation) and literature reception in that country, with which Brazil has historically kept cultural and linguistic relations. Those relations are relatively close but not unequal since both countries occupy a peripheral position in the world literary space (Pascale Casanova). This work will be developed in the light of a distant reading (Franco Moretti) that seeks to locate the literary field (Bourdieu) from the contemporary Portugal and to verify the status of such field. In that sense, the research manifests a cosmopolitan character, whose limits are somehow defined in relation to high culture and to cultural industry, also by literary works that look forward to obtaining autonomy in the literary field. The current scenario seems favorable to the great reception and circulation of the work by Bernardo Carvalho, who is known by the activism in favor of an autonomous literature, in other words, a literature that does not need neither to cover politic aspects nor national identity. Therefore, Carvalho circulates in the specialized press and is scope of study and research in Portuguese universities, which shows the ability of his literary work to penetrate/access, as it is considered not only as one of the best examples of recent Brazilian literature, but also in a global context since it is compared to the works by the greatest names of world literature.

Abstract:
In the contemporary Brazilian juvenile fiction, it was found a series of aspects - involving characters, narrators, scenarios - that promote a critical approach based on the presence of the double. It is possible to note the presence of the double in the literary work of Lygia Bojunga, subject of this dissertation, whose main purpose is to identify and analyze some manifestations of the double in the author's novels and short stories. For such, a corpus of nine out of her twenty-two works was selected: A bolsa amarela (1976), Tchau (1984), Nós Três (1987), Livro: um encontro com Lygia Bojunga (1988), Fazendo Ana Paz (1991), Seis vezes Lucas (1995), O abraço (1995), Dos vinte 1 (2007), Querida (2009). As a theoretical background, texts of Otto Rank, Nicole Bravo and Berenice Sica Lamas were used, amongst others. Furthermore, the manifestations of the double were identified in Lygia's narratives. The double appears in fiction as the author's representation of the human incompatibilities, which lead to the fragmentation of the self. The encounter of the self and the other, not always friendly, bring us issues that underpin the research on the double in the work of Lygia Bojunga. Finally, the metafictional work disclosed in this author's literature was also analyzed as a manifestation of the double

Abstract: This study examines literature of crime that circulated in the city of Rio de Janeiro and São Paulo between 1870 and 1920. The analysis done here is based on the assumption that readers, editors and authors had a common interest in the publishing feuilletons and novels that had crime as the main theme. These narratives, published by a number of newspapers, typographers, and editors, are analyzed here taking into account their production and circulation context. Here the construction of one variety of literature of crime is examined considering two aspects: its relationship with an international literary phenomena of the nineteenth century, and its relationship with the press, which continued to be a close one.

Abstract:
Elizabeth Bishop (1911–1979), one of the foremost modern American poets, lived in Brasil during seventeen-odd years beginning in 1951. During this time she composed the poetry collection Questions of Travel, stand-alone poems, and fragments as well as prose pieces and translations. This study builds on the work of critics such as Brett Millier and Lorrie Goldensohn who have covered Bishop’s poetry during her Brasil years. However, most American critics have lacked expertise in both Brasilian culture and the Portuguese language that influenced Bishop’s poetry. Since 2000, in contrast, Brasilian critic Paulo Henriques Britto has explored issues of translating Bishop’s poetry into Portuguese, while Maria Lúcia Martins and Regina Przybycien have examined Bishop’s Brasil poems from a Brasilian perspective. However, American and Brasilian scholars have yet to recognize Bishop’s journey of acculturation as displayed through her poetry chronologically or the importance of her belated reception by Brasilian literary and popular culture. This study argues that Bishop’s Brasil poetry reveals her gradual transformation from a tourist outsider to a cultural insider through her encounters with Brasilian history, culture, language, and politics. It encompasses Bishop’s published and unpublished Brasil poetry, including drafts from the Elizabeth Bishop Papers at Vassar College. On a secondary level, this study examines a reverse acculturation in how Brasilian popular and literary communities have increasingly focused on Bishop since her death, culminating in the 2013 film, Flores Raras (Reaching for the Moon in English). Understanding this extremely rare and sustained intercultural junction of Bishop in Brasil, a junction that no American poet has made since, adds a crucial angle to twentieth-first century transnational literary perspectives.

Abstract:
The present work deals with the trajectory and the intellectual production of Monteiro Lobato and the way it is connected with the national question, expressed in the writer\'s perspective as malformação (concept that defines the national formation as an incomplete process). In this sense, the research tried to investigate the distinctive approaches to the problem in two specific moments of the author\'s itinerary, which were connected with different periods of national historical experience: the Lobato\'s initial literary project (c.1914-1925), associated with São Paulo\'s nationalism which was under construction and the elaboration effort of national particularity, in a context of questions about the Brazilian nation viability; and the attempt to implement, during the 1930 decade, a specific proposal for economic modernization, at that time formulated as the author\'s answer to the to the challenge of national formation. This is a research of multidisciplinary character that transits in the areas of cultural history and the economic history, handling concepts from sociology and procedures from literary criticism.

Abstract:
The presented dissertation intends to investigate the graphic composition of children\'s books. The corpus of the research comprises the decades from 1980 to 1990 and the first years of the 21st Century, in Portugal and in Brazil, based on the selection of authors Manuela Bacelar (Portugal) and Roger Mello (Brazil). The choice of the corpus is justified because both were illustrators at first and then have become authors with double talent, that\'s to say, verbal and visual text producers. Besides this characteristic, both have developed a literary production dedicated to the juvenile public, based on the diversity of strategies and relations among semiotics systems, such as: picture books\' authors, picture books illustratorauthors\' and album formatted books\' authors. This last mentioned modality of text, in which there is integration between texts (verbal and visual) is in the center of the discussions and the consideration about its development in light of the French discursive Semiotics, that will also validate every analysis made and constitute the first chapter of this thesis dissertation.Following, the door to Portuguese children\'s books and to the development of album formatted books in such country are opened; also, there will be a detailed analysis of three works by Manuela Bacelar: O dinossauro (1990), A sereiazinha(1995) and Sebastião (2004). Each of the works will be approached considering the different relations between word-image and final composition in a graphic project that should constitute a whole. So, the works differ one from the other, as O dinossauro is a album-book, in which Bacelar is a double talented author; A sereiazinha is an illustrated-book, in which the Portuguese author illustrates the Hans Christian Andersen\'s classic and Sebastião exemplifies the genre in which, by means of images, the plastic artist tells the history. In the third chapter, the Brazilian context is focused and the teamwork emerges, as in the production of comic books, and becomes a key characteristic to the album-book genre\'s history in Brazil. Roger Mello is an author quite representative of this \'artistic tendency\' and the works chosen to be analyzed stand out by their team production and by their different relations\' (or relation degrees\') constitution between word and image in the composition of the graphic project. The following works will be analyzed with deeper attention: Jardins (2001) and Desertos (2006) verbal text of Roseana Murray; Fita verde no cabelo: nova velha história (1992), in which Mello ilustrates the tale of Guimarães Rosa and Vizinho, vizinha (2002), a work created by a team composed by the artists: Mariana Massarani, Graça Lima and Roger Mello and, still, the last signs it as its verbal text\'s author. Finally, in the fourth chapter it is possible to make a comparison between the album-book context and its characteristics in the Portuguese and in the Brazilian scenery, reaching some constants, such as the tendency to the pictorial trace in Portugal and to the graphism in Brazil. Therefore, from the two particular contexts, we can have a notion of the album-book as a genre increasingly present in the Juvenile Literature scene
