Abstract:
Millions of people around the world consider project management as their major task in their profession, yet the demand for project managers is still increasing. To face this demand many organizations use consultants as project managers for their projects. However, the literature in project management tend to ignore potential differences between internal project managers and consultants as project managers. This thesis is written on commission for LKAB which is a Swedish mining company who conduct around 60-80 projects yearly. Projects at LKAB is managed by internal professional project managers, internal line-managers and consultants as project managers. Despite having three different categories of project managers LKAB has little knowledge about potential differences in how they manage projects. Thus, the purpose of this thesis is to make a case study on project managers at LKAB in search to answer our research question: How do internal project managers, line-workers and consultants manage projects differently? To answer our research question we developed a theoretical frame where we present research which we suggest have given an answer towards the previously discussed question if project leadership has a direct impact on project success or not. Research has found that project leadership has a direct impact on project performance which we consider crucial since it impact the relevance of our study. In our theoretical frame we also present research in outsourcing, project planning and organizing, education, perspectives in project management and theories of project management competencies and skills. There are two perspectives in project management, task perspective which focus on achieving the project objectives and the organizational perspective where they emphasize the relationship between the temporary organization and the permanent organization where main focus is to create value for the receiving organization. To gather data we conducted nine semi-structured interviews in Kiruna with three line- mangers, three internal professional project managers and three consultants which has been hired as project managers by LKAB. We found support to a previous study which showed that project managers have different perspectives towards project management. Furthermore, we found a connection between the project managers perspective and how they prioritized between project goal or effect goal. Project managers with an organizational perspective consider the effect goal to be more important than the project goal and vice versa. We also found that line-managers as project managers do not plan their projects, or manage risk in the same way as professional internal project managers or consultants.

Agenbag, André. "Using real option analysis to manage project risk." Thesis, Stellenbosch : Stellenbosch University, 2003. http://hdl.handle.net/10019.1/53707.

Abstract:
Thesis (MBA)--Stellenbosch University, 2003.
ENGLISH ABSTRACT: This study project aims to use "Real Option Analysis" as a tool to translate financial hedging strategies into business strategies that can be used to hedge business projects against their associated risks. Financial investments are often hedged by means of further investment in financial option structures. These option structures give the investor the option (and sometimes the obligation) to change the constituents of his original investment, depending on changes in the external environment. A well engineered option structure will protect the investor against downside risk, while maximizing profits from upside risk. The objective of this study project is then to adapt some of the standard structures to such an extent that they can be used with similar success in the real business environment. This adaptation is done by means of Real Option Analysis - a relatively new theory whereby business uncertainty and managerial flexibility can be evaluated and quantified in a way similar to financial options. It will be seen that a careful application of Real Option Analysis allows one to take a certain business situation, identify the risks inherent to it, find a suitable option structure to hedge against those risks, and modify this option structure so that it can be implemented as a pure business strategy. This analysis is supported by a detailed derivation of a popular Real Option Analysis model, and an in depth discussion of the differences between Real- and financial options as well as difficulties associated with the implementation of Real Option-based strategies. Several examples of specific business situations are analyzed and it is concluded that Real Option Analysis can provide useful, practical and competitive strategies. Above all, the thought process leading to said strategies is deemed to provide powerful insight into the dynamics of the business/project under evaluation.

Abstract:
Since 2005, most midsize company information technology (IT) projects had a 62.4% failure rate because of wrong project team communication skills or cost overruns. IT leaders expect negative IT project outcomes will cost over $2 billion by 2020. Using the actor-network theory, the purpose of this single case study was to explore strategies used by IT leaders from a midsize IT company in Washington, D.C. to plan and execute projects under budget and on time. Using purposeful sampling, 5 IT leaders were selected for this study because of their experience in implementing successful strategies for projects. Data were collected using face-to-face semistructured interviews, company documentation, and internal organizational risk reports. Yin's 5-step process was used for data analysis to compile, disassemble, reassemble, interpret, and conclude the data. The interpretation of data, subjected to methodological triangulation and member checking to strengthen the dependability and credibility of the findings, yielded 3 themes of IT leader communication skills: IT leader strategy, IT leader knowledge, and implementation of cost savings. The findings indicated that IT leaders serve as the key actors in the IT project network, and leader communication skills are essential for implementing strategies for IT project completion and cost savings. With this knowledge, IT leaders can implement strategies to plan and execute projects under budget and on time. The implications for a positive social change includes the potential for IT leaders to reduce project production waste and contribute to economic expansion.

Demir, Selim Tugra. "'AgiLean PM' : a unifiying strategic framework to manage construction projects." Thesis, Liverpool John Moores University, 2013. http://researchonline.ljmu.ac.uk/4509/.

Full text
Abstract:
A challenge in Lean Construction is how to make it applicable when there is a high degree of complexity and uncertainty. In many construction projects there are changing project requirements, unique products and a need for actions that are highly focused on meeting customer/client expectations. Such scenarios require management methods that are characterised by being flexible and able to react to change. The aim of this thesis is to introduce a method that has such characteristics. Project Management, Lean and Agile paradigms are merged through the application of the fission and fusion approach of nuclear physics. This research is facilitated through a sequential explorative method. In the first instance, interviews with 22 practitioners in the fields of construction project management, Lean and Agile have been conducted. Then a quantitative self-administered questionnaire with 213 useful responses has been utilised to validate the transferability of the interview findings. It is concluded that Lean is not ideally suited to dealing with the dynamic nature of construction projects. Agile methods, which were developed to cope with the high levels of uncertainty inherent to IT projects, are more flexible and able to react to change. Hence utilising Agile-based methods might be the key to the successful utilization of Lean in construction. Therefore a management method based on combining Lean and Agile approaches has potential. Such an approach needs creative thinking to develop a solution that is different to that of “Leagile”. Leagile uses Lean and Agile methods in the execution phase sequentially, through using a decoupling point model to separate the two. This thesis introduces a new paradigm in which such a decoupling or separation does not take place. Rather, project management, Lean and Agile have been merged together to develop a new holistic and strategic framework. The paradigm presented in this thesis is termed “AgiLean Project Management”.

Thesis, Uppsala universitet, Företagsekonomiska institutionen, 2013. http://urn.kb.se/resolve?urn=urn:nbn:se:uu:diva-202611.

Full text
Abstract:
The study examines the relationship between project leadership styles and success when affected by pressures such as time, project type, complexity and cultural diversity. The research examines the two well-known leadership approaches of transformational- and transactional leadership, and argues that transactional leadership, which has less focus on the leader-follower relationship, is more suitable and successful in projects with limited time. The transformational leadership style, which has more focus on vision and relationship between the followers takes time to build, and is therefore more successful for long-term projects. In order to examine this, a questionnaire was developed and sent out to 56 project leaders around the world. Findings indicate that time in projects have a negative effect on project success, and that both transformational and transactional leadership style has a dampening effect on this negative relationship, hence increasing the success. Furthermore, the study finds strong correlation between the two leadership styles, indicating that these should not be seen as two different attitudes, as leaders can show behaviors from both the transformational and transactional leadership style, possibly explaining the similar dampening effect. No further significant moderating effects were found in the variables project type, complexity and the project’s cultural diversity.

Abstract:
WPI’s global and off-campus IQPs, rich with real-world sponsors/projects and increasingly diverse teams, require that both faculty and students navigate a network of ambiguous situations and relationships. Despite the increasing adoption of project-based learning as a preferred educational model across higher education, and the prevalence of project-based work in STEM careers, research on how to best prepare students and faculty to identify and navigate ambiguity inherent to project-based learning is limited. Seeking to fill this important gap, this graduate thesis advances a pilot qualitative study focused on how students in domestic and off campus IQPs experience and navigate ambiguity in their IQPs. The thesis presents preliminary grounded theory regarding the types of ambiguity experienced by students, how students navigate through the ambiguity, and elements that appear to impact a student’s success in that navigation.

Adams, Brent Michael, and Thi Bich Van Tran. "Project Manager Competencies in managing International Development Projects : The Project Managers' Perspective." Thesis, Umeå universitet, Företagsekonomi, 2017. http://urn.kb.se/resolve?urn=urn:nbn:se:umu:diva-130986.

Full text
Abstract:
This research studies the competencies of International Development (ID) project managers from their perspectives, taking into consideration the contextual factors and the challenges that they face when managing ID projects. The study adopts a constructionist ontological viewpoint and an interpretivist epistemological philosophical assumption. The nature of the research is exploratory with an inductive approach, using qualitative research method. The data was collected through semi-structured interviews with experienced project managers in International Development projects. Template analysis strategy was used to analyse the data. The findings show that contextual factors have a significant influence on the challenges that ID project managers face when managing projects. Contextual factors are operating environment, large network of stakeholders and intangible goals of ID projects. Five challenges were identified as the results of the context, namely stakeholder management challenge, beneficiary needs analysis challenge, the challenge of balancing strategic and operational views, capacity building and training challenge and sustainable funding challenge. To overcome these challenges, seven ID project manager competencies were identified management skills, personal qualities, interpersonal skills, stakeholder engagement skills, capacity building skills, and change management skills. These competencies are found to be interrelated and complementary. While the role and responsibilities of ID project managers were also uncovered during the research, the findings on contextual factors, challenges and competencies help to better understand the ID project manager role and responsibilities. This study makes the contributions from both theoretical and practical point of view. With regards to theoretical contribution, our findings expanded on ID project manager competencies as well as relating them to the context and challenges in ID projects. The role and responsibilities of ID project manager is another theoretical contribution in this study. From a practical point of view, this thesis’s findings would be useful for various organizations who deliver ID projects, particularly human resources management. In addition, it can act as knowledge sharing with ID project managers and help in designing and enhancing educational programmes in ID project management. Overall, this could result in better delivery and overcoming the challenges of International Development projects.

Full text
Abstract:
In one of the largest and most important industries in Sweden, the construction industry, the success of the projects can be closely related to how uncertainties of outcomes or risk are managed. For a construction project to be successful, different individuals and organizations need to provide their knowledge and experience to fulfill the project scope. Risk is something that, if properly managed, will make the project achieve and perhaps surpass these goals and if not, make the project underperform. There exist frameworks for how risk should be managed and also theories for how past experience influence future decisions. How risk within construction projects are managed is related to the experience of the team members as well as top management’s insight in the risk management process. Through a qualitative approach, based on literature as well as interviews, this master thesis provides an insight into how the key project participants are managing risk. Further, this study examines possible shortcomings with risk management practices and proposes management strategies for these. In this study, consultants working with both developers and contractors have been included to share their view. The results of this study show that current risk management practices deviate from the practice proposed within research and industry related literature. This makes the construction projects to rely heavily on individual’s knowledge and there is a risk that lessons learned will not be spread within the organization or the society. Further, risk and opportunities are often managed within the same framework which does not provide for risk to be managed accordingly and opportunities to be exploited. It is proposed that professionals within the industry have a risk propensity that is rather unchanged by gaining more experience but there exists a shift in how risk is perceived. These findings are closely related to how much insight top management within the organization have. Today, most efforts are concentrated on how the project is performing in relation to the budget and schedule which makes risk management a reactive rather than a proactive measure.

Abstract:
Generally, it is accepted that small businesses are becoming increasingly important in terms of employment, wealth creation, and the development of innovation in the global economy. Unfortunately, many small businesses fail before reaching maturity, mainly due to inadequate entrepreneurial skills to establish and grow their businesses. It is, therefore, vital to understand the management abilities that are required to enable start-up businesses to survive. This study's main aim is to propose a risk management training tool to assist business start-ups to mitigate their risks. This is expected to allow for increased business start-up success rates. The aim of the proposed risk mitigation tool will be to provide training to allow small business owners to deal with challenges they face. The tool should assist with minimising the risk of failure and therefore support increased growth and survival of small businesses. The research questions aimed at achieving the primary objective deal with: *The typical risks per start-up phase for small businesses *How to mitigate the risk per business start-up phase *How best to teach entrepreneurs to identify and manage business start-up risk per phase. The research was conducted by means of a literature and empirical study. The literature study reviewed business start-up phases, challenges facing start-up businesses, project life cycle phases, critical factors leading to project failure, project risk management, and principles of serious games design. The challenges facing start-up businesses were tested empirically in practice by means of a measurement instrument, and subsequently evaluated. The size of the sample used was 58 entrepreneurs from start-up businesses. The results from this study show a need for improvements in the following skills for start-up owners/managers: risk management skills, entrepreneurial skills, people management skill, business management skill, and financial management skill. This study proposed a tool to teach entrepreneurs to identify and manage start-up risks per phase. The tool is proposed to be a blended model tool. Thus, the tool consists of the workshop part; whereby, the facilitator is face-to-face with the trainee, and post-training application-based support.

The importance of Information Technology (IT) projects for business is increasing and project results directly impact organizations’ strategy and performance. In this scenario, risk management processes can help project managers to analyze the consequences of changes on project goals and baselines. By managing risks, project managers can have a holistic view of projects. Despite project managers recognizing the importance of risk management, many of them only manage risks partially or even, skip this process due to daily difficulties and time pressure. Wiki platforms have some characteristics and principles inherited from Web 2.0 tools that can be useful when adopted on risk management. Wikis can help project managers evolve their teams and stakeholders on the process of identifying, reporting and monitoring risks on projects. This thesis proposes a framework - the Wiki for Risk Management (W4RM) - that can be used on risk management in IT projects. The process of designing the framework was divided into three stages: literature review, one focus group and interviews based on a constructivist methodological approach. This research points out that professionals face a series of difficulties as they engage on risk management, as previously argued by other authors on project management research area. Due to these difficulties, project managers are not able to manage risks as expected. An important theoretical contribution of this research is the robust analysis existing issues on risk management in IT settings. Another contribution of this thesis is the proposed framework for risk management for IT projects. For managerial implication of this research the W4RM framework that can be used by practitioners on project management.

Abstract:
Thesis (MPhil)--Stellenbosch University, 2008.
ENGLISH ABSTRACT: This study consists of a proposal to construct and manage Moya weKhaya, a cultural centre on a vacant site linked to an existing park in A Section, Khayelitsha. The cultural centre is an innovative vision of urban renewal. The intention is to contribute towards addressing current social and cultural needs and challenge the historical realities of apartheid planning. The concept was initiated by two community-based organisations (CBOs) and the proposal has been developed through a series of meetings and workshops with the initiating CBOs. The approach to the project, from its inception, was based on a communicative planning approach and the intention of this proposal is to stimulate dialogue with government and other potential partners and garner support for the project. The proposal presents the rationale, vision and objectives of Moya weKhaya and describes the background and context in which the project was formulated. It locates the project within the current South African legislative and policy framework and within current planning discourse. The thematic and ecological approach to the architectural design is presented and the proposed usage of the cultural centre and the envisaged activities are described. Strategies to raise funds for capital costs and partnership options are explored. A preliminary operating budget and income generating strategies to maintain the centre are presented. Potential challenges and solutions are discussed. The proposed cultural centre is an ambitious, costly, and complex project and it raises two fundamental issues. - The challenge to the CBO partnership to raise its own capacity to implement and manage the project on its own and / or to negotiate and formalise a public-private partnership to build and manage the centre. - The challenge by the CBOs to government in particular to support the project and bridge the gap between the legislative framework that promotes grassroots driven development and the institutional mechanisms (and political will) to facilitate such processes. This proposal is an attempt to present a framework in which to address these issues.

Touboulic, Anne. "Exploring how to manage supply chain relationships for sustainability : an action research project with PepsiCo and their agricultural suppliers in the UK." Thesis, Cardiff University, 2014. http://orca.cf.ac.uk/65479/.

Full text
Abstract:
This thesis is the result of the work conducted in collaboration with PepsiCo UK and their UK based growers between October 2010 and October 2013. The research project has been funded by an ESRC-CASE studentship and has provided the opportunity to explore the relationships between PepsiCo, as a large customer, and their small agricultural suppliers on their journey to address the sustainability challenge. The research is framed within the field of sustainable supply chain management (SSCM), which can be defined as the integration and coordination of economic, environmental and social goals in the management of inter-organisational business processes (Carter & Rogers, 2008). Although there has been a growing amount of research in the field in the last decade, little research has offered insights into the actual implementation process of sustainability practices in supply chains (SC). This research addresses the qualitative knowledge gap around the relationship aspects of implementing SSC practices, and particularly relationships between a large buyer and small suppliers. The research adopts an Action Research (AR) approach; drawing on a variety of empirical methods, in an attempt to both contribute to academic knowledge and to address the practical concerns of the research participants. The thesis presents the process and outcomes of this AR project that has revolved around several emergent cycles of inquiry. The findings of this research offer a complementary perspective between inter-organisational governance dynamics for sustainability and the critical role of individual stakeholders in the change towards more sustainable practices in the SC. This is helpful in moving towards a more multilevel understanding of SSCM. The practical contribution of the research aims at supporting the development of better management practices for the implementation of sustainability practices in a supply chain involving a large buyer and SME suppliers.

Abstract:
The present study investigates the role of the Front-End phase within the context of Innovative Small and Medium-sized Enterprises through the project management lens, focusing on what practitioners can do to manage this phase. Taking a cue from the assumption that the Front-End phase of a project is a very critical and important stage, this study begins with a literature review on innovation and on its role among the Small and Medium-sized Enterprises, and moves to the identification of the main challengesthat an Innovative Italian Small and Medium Enterprise has to face in the Front-End phase. Particularly, the research focuses on the strategies that a project manager can implement to deal with the fuzzy nature of the Front-End phase, originated by uncertainty, equivocality and complexity. The study has an inductive approach and a cross-sectional time-horizon. A case study strategy has been employed, together with semi-structured interviews as data collection technique, involving six Italian Innovative Small and Medium-sized Enterprises identified through the framework of legal requirements provided by the European Union. Although literature poses on the same level all three elements, results show that there is a general consensus about the main role played by uncertainty. Practitioners identify several strategies to employ in order to deal with uncertainty, while the number of strategies identified to reduce equivocality and complexity is limited. Furthermore, this study identifies a correlation between the size of a company and the type of strategies employed to deal with the fuzziness. The more resource a company allocates on a project, the wider is the range of possible strategies project managers can adapt.

Abstract:
The return on investment of construction organizations is at risk because construction managers fail to execute projects efficiently. The purpose of this single case study was to explore strategies that construction managers used to deliver projects efficiently. The selected population was 10 construction managers from a single construction organization operating in Panama. The conceptual framework for this study was the McKinsey 7S. Data were collected using semistructured interviews, observations, and a review of public documents. Collected data were compiled, disassembled, reassembled, interpreted, and then conclusions were reached, as noted in Yin's 5-step analysis. Themes that emerged from the study included project experience, communication, collaboration, and resource management. Construction managers noted that the review of needed project experience in alignment with the complexity of the project is a strategy to deliver projects efficiently. Leaders of construction organizations can increase strategic performance by implementing collaboration and leadership programs in accordance with the business objectives. By improving labor productivity, construction companies can complete construction projects faster and with lower construction costs. The findings of this study could contribute to positive social change by providing communication and collaboration strategies between construction organizations and local communities to source local staff and resources. Construction managers might benefit from the findings of this study by increasing their project management skills, an effect that could result in long-term employability.

Mtshekexe, Ntombesibini Octavia. "Problems experienced by project managers on housing projects." Thesis, Nelson Mandela Metropolitan University, 2014. http://hdl.handle.net/10948/d1020930.

Full text
Abstract:
Housing projects are amongst the South African (SA) Government’s major focus points with reference to budgeting for its financial years. The delivery of these housing projects is taking place at a slower rate than anticipated due to the problems experienced in the processes involved in their management. The project management shortcomings are a major setback with reference to the delivery of houses to the communities. It is, however, stated by the Constitution of the Republic of South Africa (RSA) that every South African citizen has a right to housing and that the Local Government, as the closest entity to communities, must do whatever it possibly can to ensure timeous service delivery to its communities. The objective of this research is to ascertain the nature and extent of project management problems experienced by municipal project managers, the impact thereof and potential solutions to the identified problems. The study is intended to advise on possible ways to address project management problems arising during the implementation of housing projects in the Nelson Mandela Bay Municipality (NMBM) through investigation and analysis of information gathered in both theory and practice. Project management is a process of controlling the achievement of project objectives through the application of knowledge, skills, tools and techniques. For a housing project the main objective is to deliver safe, quality houses on time and within budget. Problems which hinder the delivery of housing projects relate to cost, time and the quality of housing projects delivered. The fact that these key project objectives are not met needs to be addressed urgently in order to improve the housing delivery. The literature reviewed and the feedback from the surveys; indicate that these problems have a vast impact on housing projects. The survey also reveals that it is not only housing Project Managers (PMs) that are unable to perform well, but also other parties involved in the project management of housing projects and which play a great role in project management failures of housing projects. Some of these parties are consultants and contractors. The lack of performance by project managers affects the delivery of houses negatively in the NMBM.

Kapogiannis, G. "A conceptual framework for project managers to improve projects performance." Thesis, University of Salford, 2013. http://usir.salford.ac.uk/30642/.

Full text
Abstract:
The Architecture, Engineering and Construction (AEC) sector often encounters difficulties in attaining satisfactory project performance. The secondary data in this research (literature review) clearly shows that an inability to pre-identify problems leads to projects becoming ‘risky’. This can be due to a lack of meeting certain project targets, i.e., a lack of predicting ‘accurate’ project time and costs, a failure to raise the project’s quality issues and failures in predicting a project’s return on investment. In addition, it has been shown that a major lack of anticipating problems within a construction project can occur because of a lack of providing accurate data/information and a lack of team collaboration between project stakeholders. Much research has been conducted in order to anticipate construction project problems and to attempt to offer technological solutions, including information maturity models. However, in spite of all this, research projects still run into risks. Therefore, this thesis aims to investigate a conceptual framework to support construction project managers in order to enhance project performance. This conceptual framework brings together three main entities: Integrated Collaborative Technologies, Team Collaboration and Proactive Behaviour. These three notable entities are used to support project managers’ strategies in order to successfully fulfil the project. In order for this to be achieved the researcher has met the following objectives: an investigation as to how proactive behaviour impacts on the progress of construction projects, an investigation into how team collaboration relates to proactive behaviour and an investigation into how team collaboration and integrated collaborative technologies can support proactive behaviour. The research design includes primary mixed data analysis and secondary data analysis from the literature review. In order to gather data, semi-structured interviews and a questionnaire have been undertaken by the researcher. The proposed conceptual framework was tested by asking professional experts whether the proposed framework was applicable within a construction project environment. The research shows that there is a relationship between integrated collaborative technologies and team collaboration, and team collaboration and proactive behaviour, and hence these factors impact on project performance. Moreover it has been proved that, in order to achieve a successful outcome, a project requires stakeholders to learn how to collaborate with the support of integrated collaborative technologies. Throughout this ‘iterative process’ construction project managers can enhance their proactive behaviour at an individual level and thus can enhance their ability to pre-identify construction related problems. Arguably, this behavioural change will impact positively on project performance indicators.

Abstract:
Leadership style and competency are relevant to the failure or success of a project. The purpose of this single case study was to explore the leadership styles and competencies that project managers possess to improve information technology (IT) project outcomes. The targeted population included 5 project managers from an organization headquartered in the mid-Atlantic region of the United States who have successfully managed U.S.-based IT projects and improved the project outcomes. The 3 traditional leadership styles (transformational, transactional, and participatory) were the conceptual framework for this study. Data collection included review of archival organizational documents and semistructured interviews with 5 qualified participants. Data were compiled, organized, dissembled, reassembled into a sequence of groups, and interpreted for meaning. The interview protocol, interview transcription, member checking, and methodological triangulation added to the trustworthiness of the findings. Three themes emerged from the data analysis: selecting leadership style, selecting leadership competency, and identifying project factors affecting project outcomes. The implications of this study for positive social change include the potential to increase job opportunities through improved organizational performance that may result from improved project outcomes.

Abstract:
Infrastructure project delays and cost overrun are caused by ineffective use of organizational skills, processes, and resources by project managers in the construction industry. Cost overrun and schedule delay in Qatari infrastructure projects have had damaging effects on the national economy by way of claims and litigation, contractual disputes, delays in dependent projects, and project abandonment. The purpose of this qualitative case study was to explore the perceptions of project managers regarding how they utilize capacity-planning practices to mitigate project schedule delay and cost overrun in government-funded infrastructure projects in Qatar. This study was framed by three conceptual models developed by Gill to outline the capacity management needs within a construction company: (a) the time horizon model, (b) the individual-organization-industry levels model, and (c) the capacity development across components model. Date were collected from semistructured interviews with 8 participants, observational field notes, and archival data regarding Qatari infrastructure project managers' experiences in capacity-planning practices. Thematic analysis of textual data and cross-case synthesis analysis yielded 5 conceptual categories that encompassed 15 themes. The conceptual categories were (a) resources to meet performance capacity, (b) knowledgeable and skillful staff, (c) short- and long-term planning strategy, (d) cost overrun issue, and (e) time management. Findings may be used to promote timely completion of infrastructure projects, which may benefit citizens, construction companies, and the economy of Qatar.

Full text
Abstract:
The importance for organizations and projects to adopt sustainability has increased. Previous research has so far mainly treated sustainability and project management as separate research areas, resulting in a lack of understanding in the merged field of sustainable project management. Therefore, is sustainable project management a research area of interest and the context of this study is construction projects, considering the significant environmental impact of the construction industry. The aim of this thesis is research how sustainability is manged in construction projects This qualitive study includes interviews with 11 project managers in the construction- and real estate sector. The result consists in four themes: (1) Who´s responsible?, (2) The power of knowledge, (3) Conflict between time, money and sustainability, and (4) Priorities. The study shows that the project managers have numerous sustainable requirements to acknowledge, which lead to managers having many different aspects in consideration during the project. Four factors were identified to impact the sustainable work in construction projects; economics and time, knowledge, and a tendency to hold other stakeholders responsible for the sustainability outcomes. The results establish the importance of project managers’ responsibility of projects’ sustainability, as well as knowledge of project management. Therefore, in order to improve the sustainability of construction projects, project managers need to take more responsibility of the sustainability work and deepen their knowledge of project management to manage the projects better and prioritize between different requirements.

Abstract:
Project management is entering into every aspect of our work with high speed but a relatively low success rate. Based on research into the current project management literature, this thesis concludes that three elements - a competent project manager, right project definition and right project organization are the key factors that determine the project success. This study focuses on the first of these three factors: selection of a competent project manager. The research process uses a web formed questionnaire based on the 102 Project Management Institute competency elements designed to measure Project Manager Knowledge, Performance and Personal competency. This questionnaire was used to gather data concerning real-world experience of critical project management skills from 16 people who have professional project experiences. Based on this data, a new project management tool was developed to highlight effective project manager selection considerations and effective organizational use of project management analysis and problem solving processes. This new tool attempts to assist the combination of project manager capabilities and organizational capabilities to achieve more effective project success. As a pilot survey, 16 respondents who have project experiences using a project-management approach were invited to complete the study project management questionnaire. The responses concerning the importance of the various elements named in the questionnaire were analyzed. The analysis resulted in a profile representing the critical skills associated with project management from the view of the expert respondents. This thesis proposes this profile as a project manager selection method. It also analyzes organizational project management problems in light of the selection model proposed as a way of helping the project manager, project, and organization move toward more sustainable development. As a part of future research, the effectiveness of this tool in distinguishing between effective and less effective project managers will form the basis of potential future research.

Abstract:
Thesis (DBA)--Macquarie University, Graduate School of Management, 2008.
Bibliography: p. 267-292.
The telecommunications industry ('Telco'), a service provider business, is undergoing significant changes such as deregulations, technology changes and increasing competition. Managers face increased pressure to bring new products with the latest technology into the market faster. Few previous studies have analysed New Product Development (NPD) projects in this hypercompetitive industry. This research addresses this gap by investigating Telco NPD projects and the associated skill sets needed by successful project managers.--The study evaluated how project managers' various skills contribute to project management success. Incorporating clear definitions grounded in the recent literature on NPD, management and leadership, the research proposed a new organising framework of four groups of skill sets: technical, leadership, managerial and administrative. Technical skills are the knowledge of technologies on which the project work is based. Leadership skills involve influencing project stakeholders to deliver a quality product within time and budget. Managerial skills are needed to develop and execute project plans and to get project work done. Administrative skills include understanding an organisation's structure, culture, policies, processes, methods and tools.--Previous classifications for Telco NPD projects have over-emphasised product innovation and undervalued the process aspects. While small projects provide fewer management challenges, this study found that project managers of large and complex projects require all four skill sets. Managerial skills are mandatory. Technical and administrative skills enhance understanding of the technology and business processes. Leadership skills are limited at an operational level. Managerial and administrative skills are essential for developing and implementing project plans; technical skills are important in the initial project stages; leadership skills are needed from the beginning until delivering a new product.--The research outcomes can be used when hiring and developing NPD project manager professionals in the Telco industry to complement current project manager competency standards, which do not cover all the skill sets. Findings may be applicable to Telco companies in other countries new to such market conditions. Furthermore, other industries may adapt the skill set framework to suit their own particular requirements.

Abstract:
Senior construction project managers who fail to create strategies for environmental sustainability risk losing their competitive advantage in the business environment. Based on stakeholder theory, the purpose of this multiple case study was to explore the strategies that senior project managers use to implement environmental sustainability in their construction projects. Data were obtained from semistructured interviews with 4 senior project managers from 4 construction companies located in the midwestern region of the United States who implemented environmentally sustainable practices in their project processes. The data analysis process included methodological triangulation. The interviews were transcribed, interpreted, and coded to generate themes, which were validated through member checking and archival documentation. The centralized themes included (a) stakeholder engagement, (b) terminology, and (c) cost. Construction projects require the use of appropriate strategies for implementation of environmental sustainability in their project processes, lest project failure occurs. The use of stakeholder engagement principles, to strengthen environmental sustainability interests, creates shared concern and helps generate a roadmap for using environmentally sustainable business strategies. The implications for positive social change include the potential to affect business practices by contributing new knowledge to develop strategies that project managers can use for implementing environmentally sustainable practices. Environmentally sustainable construction practices will enhance the social practice of caring for the environment and create health and well-being.

Abstract:
Project success is a measure of both project manager efficacy and stakeholder satisfaction. One of the primary measures of success for construction projects is meeting cost targets and yet recent data indicates up to 9 out of 10 construction projects fail to meet this target. Unsuccessful construction projects can have ramifications that affect project teams, internal stakeholders, customers and the local community. The purpose of this correlational study was to examine the relationship between project managers' well-being, self-control, emotionality, and sociability and project success using Petrides and Furnham's theoretical framework of trait emotional intelligence. Using the Trait Emotional Intelligence Questionnaire short form self-assessment instrument, data were collected from a sample of 104 construction project managers in the United States who had executed a project in the last 5 years. Data analysis revealed both the combination of the four predictor variables, and the self-control variable taken individually, resulted in a statistically significant relationship to project success at the p < .05 level with each having a p value of .001. Hiring managers and organizational leadership can use this information to guide hiring processes and training programs to help improve success rates in the construction industry. Improved project success could result in positive social change through the stabilization of the job market and improved partnerships between construction organizations, local governments, and the community.

ENGLISH ABSTRACT: The project manager is facing many challenges when planning and managing an Emerging Contractor project. Constraints experienced by Emerging Contractors are exerting risks on the project and pose a challenge to the project manager to guide the project to successful completion. The constraints and risks experienced on an Emerging Contractor project are mostly related to inexperience and unproven track record. The Emerging Contractor has not been in business long enough to build trust relationships with suppliers. Suppliers are limiting their exposure to risk and are therefore not prepared to supply material in bulk or on credit to the Emerging Contractor. The term Emerging Contractor is a well-known term in the South African construction industry, but no clear definition exists of what criteria qualifies a contractor to be an Emerging Contractor. The assumption in the industry is that an Emerging Contractor is a construction business which is 100% controlled and managed by a black person. Emerging Contractors are conducting business at the bottom end of the market where there is no barrier to entry. This makes the competition very severe and the profit margins are very slim. Even though the contract values are low, the Emerging Contractor projects require a considerable amount of effort to manage and are therefore not cost effective for the experienced project manager. The constraints experienced by the Emerging Contractor can be addressed by co-opting experience to the project team to provide guidance, training and management assistance. The proposal will require additional funding, but after a few projects the Emerging Contractor would have built up a reputation as a successful contractor and will therefore be self sustaining.

Abstract:
Communication inefficiencies are among the reasons for poor or substandard performances in project teams. The purpose of this multiple case study was to explore the strategies used by project managers in the health care industry to strengthen communication within project teams. The conceptual framework for the study was McQuail's mass communication theory and Craig's communication theory. Participants of the study were 4 project managers from 2 leading medical supply companies located in the mid-Atlantic region of the United States. Data were collected using semistructured interviews and a review of company documents. The summarized interview responses were validated by participants through the use of member checking. The 3 key themes that emerged from thematic data analysis highlighted strategies that project managers used to strengthen communications with project teams: communication planning, management, and ethics. Project managers can use the study's findings to increase team members' motivation, improve project results, and bolster organizational profitability, which may positively contribute to the growth, development, and betterment of the communities served by their companies.

Abstract:
In today’s business climate, clear and marked risk management is often not particularlyprioritized, but is instead something companies see as an obstacle or nuisance. A companyoften bases its decision on (non-risk adjusted) expected return, which often leads to ignoranceof inherent risks if the expected return is high. To deal with the difficulties of not only basingdecisions on non-risk adjusted return, this paper will show how two different companies dealwith risk and how highly prioritized risk management is. The main conclusion is thatcompanies do not have a particularly systematic management of risks, which makes the topicever more interesting, given the general interest and importance of risk management. Oneinterpretation of this conclusion is that the industry and the organizational structure have alarge influence on which risk management method that is used.

Abstract:
The acceleration of globalisation has forced companies to cope with its propulsion in order to become more competitive and internationalised, an internationalisation that creates the importance of knowing how to manage global and virtual teams (GVT). The knowledge in the area today has shown to be vague, generalised and hard to grasp, especially for the unexperienced GVT-project manager. The purpose of this thesis is therefore to study whether the literature regarding how to manage a GVT corresponds with the perceptions in practice and how these findings can contribute to a more efficient project management approach. This study is examined using a qualitative method based upon literature and semi-structured interviews. This foundation is used to provide a deeper understanding of the subject as well as it puts this research questions into the proper context. The interview respondents are from the same organisation, however, from offices located in four different countries. The result shows that there are different perspectives on how GVTs should be managed efficiently, and that different leadership preferences exits. Furthermore, there exists a lot of possibilities, but also challenges that must be coped with in order to reach the team’s full potential. These challenges are connected to the virtual work settings and practical problems as well as the team's heterogeneity and communication structure. It was found that it is important to consider the purpose of the collaboration in order to strategically plan for its initiation and execution.
