Tasic, Ivan. "Impact of retailer's promotional activities on customer traffic." Texas A&M University, 2003. http://hdl.handle.net/1969.1/5880.

Full text
Abstract:
The usual theoretical assumption that the retailer's promotional activities serve the purpose of attracting customers into stores lacks empirical verification. The relationship between promotional activity and customer count is examined empirically in just a few studies, and no significantly positive association is found. This dissertation is a comprehensive empirical study of a unique time series cross section dataset, which contains scanner data representing 28 product categories in a large supermarket chain over two and a half year long period. The main result of this dissertation is that retailer's promotional activities are positively related to customer count. Two constructed measures of the promotional activity have a positive significant effect on store traffic that is comparable with the customer count effect of an average holiday. Some 55 percent of the positive long-run promotional activity effect is felt immediately, and the remaining 45 percent is spread over a five week long period. The promotions have prolonged effects that last until the next promotional peak -€“ the next holiday. It is also found that promotional discounts have positive and significant effect on store profit.

Ilic, Peter. "The impact of mobile phones on collaborative learning activities." Thesis, University of Exeter, 2013. http://hdl.handle.net/10871/15697.

Full text
Abstract:
In light of the ubiquitous nature of mobile communications technology, society is forced to rethink education. When considering the freedom of communication in terms of time and space that this mobile technology provides, educators need to understand how this ever present communications platform can be exploited to enhance collaborative learning. The central theme of this thesis is the role of mobile phones as a support for collaborative learning both in and out of the classroom. The questions asked are: What is the distinctive affordance offered by the mobile phone for collaborative learning? What is the affective relationship between student, mobile phone and homework? Does the intervention affect the relationship between students, their mobile phones and their homework? Does the affordance offered by the technology lead to more awareness of learning? What is the nature of the dialogue with the mobile phone technology? In this thesis, the methodology is designed to explore the area of collaborative learning and the use of mobile phones as a support for collaborative learning through critical reviews of the literature and a year-long exploratory multiple case study integrating both qualitative data analysis and quantitative data analysis. Qualitative exploratory interviews and surveys are combined with extensive quantitative internet log data to provide a detailed image of students’ mobile use during collaborative activities. The results are triangulated, and In light of current research key issues are interpreted and discussed. The findings of the study support four key hypotheses which emerge from the theoretical framework. First, that there are distinctive affordances offered by the mobile phone for collaborative learning that increase learning opportunities. Second, that the affective relationship between students and their mobile phone has a positive influence on attitudes towards homework when the homework involves the use of their mobile phones. Third, that the intervention affected the relationship between students their mobile phone and their homework by reducing barriers between private and public spaces. Fourth, the affordances offered by the technology led to more awareness of content through an increase in opportunities for reflection. In addition, some insights into the nature of the dialogue with the mobile phone technology are explored. These findings have implications for educational theory and practice since they provide evidence to support the incorporation of mobile devices into collaborative educational situations. This research will be of interest to those concerned with the impact of mobile devices on the area of collaborative learning specifically and the field of education in general. The contribution that this research brings to scholarship and to the educational community is an increased understanding of the ways that ubiquitous mobile technology can affect a student’s mobile-based collaborative learning experience. The integration of these findings into the current body of knowledge may lead to improvements in future educational design and highlight areas which require further research.

Full text
Abstract:
This research paper aims to investigate if the incorporation of students’ extramural English (EE) activities, such as watching movies or playing computer games, into the English classroom affect their motivation. This research was inspired by The School Inspectorate’s (Skolinspektionen, 2011) conclusion that too many Swedish students find English lessons un-motivating as well as boring. Partly to blame for this problem is the lack of perceived authenticity in the English classroom when compared to the activities that the students are engaged in outside of school (EE). Since this gap between school English and out-of-school English is creating un-motivated students in the classroom, this paper aims to describe learner motivation towards the English language, and whether incorporating students EE activities can increase their motivation. This is done with the support of different theories of motivation as well as the current globalized landscape, with English being considered a global language. One teacher and 25 of her students were interviewed to hear their thoughts on whether the incorporation of extramural English activities into the classroom would increase motivation. The study came to the conclusion that students wanted to learn English in order to become participants in the globalized world. Also, both teacher and students wanted to incorporate extramural English activities into the classroom and stated that this would increase their motivation in school. However, they also explained that it had to be incorporated, or ‘schoolified’, in a way that increased the students’ knowledge and proficiency, and was in line with the curriculum and its knowledge requirements.

Jansen, Lauren. "The Academic Impact of Extracurricular Activities on Middle School Students." Thesis, Lindenwood University, 2017. http://pqdtopen.proquest.com/#viewpdf?dispub=10249513.

Full text
Abstract:

This research study examined the academic impact of extracurricular activities on middle school students. This study investigated a possible relationship between the amount of hours that students spent participating in extracurricular activities and their academic achievement, as well as the amount of hours that students spent participating in in-school extracurricular activities and their academic achievement. This study used a combination of quantitative and qualitative data to reach its results. The quantitative data ultimately did not show a statistically significant correlation between the hours that students spent in extracurricular activities in general or in in-school activities and academic achievement. However, there was an upward trend in the data for hours that students spent in extracurricular activities in general and their academic achievement. The qualitative component drew upon the prior research on traits that contribute to the success of middle school students academically, and found a pattern consistent with the evidence of these traits through the results of a survey and interviews. Therefore, the qualitative component showed that through connecting these answers to and relying on the prior research, middle school students most likely benefitted academically from being involved in extracurricular activities, especially in-school activities that met these needs. The researcher also reflected on the study and made several recommendations for future research on the topic, ranging from survey and sampling augmentations to suggestions of sub-topics worthy of further exploration.

Abstract:
This thesis examined the impact of residential design on children’s outdoor activities in inner-Brisbane. Examination of impact assessable development applications provided empirical data establishing the rapid decline of usable residential greenspace (URG). Children’s input through surveys indicate they participate in outdoor activities unsupervised in yards which provide busy families access to greenspace without needing to be driving or supervising. However, parental restrictions limit children’s independent mobility. Effective evaluation of public policies is required to ensure URG and safe, walkable neighbourhoods. Public awareness about the benefits of greenspace close to home and the importance of children’s independent mobility must be prioritised.

Abstract:
The relationship between the amount of extracurricular activities and the school performance and mental health of children and adolescents was examined. One hundred thirty-three parents completed measures on extracurricular activity participation, academic performance, and mental health for their children in Grades 3-12. Results indicated one significant linear and one significant curvilinear relationship between extracurricular activity participation and school performance of adolescents. As adolescents were involved in additional extracurricular activities, their school performance improved (in a linear relationship), while median amounts of activity were related to the best grades (in a curvilinear relationship). Although these results were significant, their practical meaningfulness is limited due to a weak linear relationship and moderate curvilinear relationship. Significant relationships were not found between extracurricular activity participation and school performance of children or between extracurricular activity participation and the mental health of children or adolescents (52).

Ferguson, Rachel. "The impact of activities of daily living on seating interface pressures." Thesis, Ulster University, 2014. http://ethos.bl.uk/OrderDetails.do?uin=uk.bl.ethos.604657.

Full text
Abstract:
Even though the prevention of pressure ulcers is a priority area for healthcare agencies globally (Dunn & Stander, 2008; Graves et aI., 2005; Russo & Exilhauser, 2006), these challenging wounds continue to trouble individuals with impaired sensation, prolonged im111obility, or advanced age. The purpose of this thesis W<1S to investigate the effectiveness of integrating pressure redistributing activities into everyday life for reducing interface pressures for individuals at risk of ulceration. The first study reviewed the literature and found that the majority of individuals at risk of developing pressure ulcers do not adhere with the pressure relieving frequency currently recommended. It also highlighted that there is no known magnitude of movement currently recommended to relieve interface pressure. In order to measure magnitude of seated movement, the second study explored the effect of anatomical positioning of the Activpal3 accelerometer. The 1110St stable measurement came t1'0111 the accelerometer placed at the sternum. The third study investigated the etTect of duration and magnitilde of forward reach on body seat interface pressures of able bodied subjects sitting in a wheelchair. Reaching forward significantly redistributed pressure at the seating interface, as demonstrated by the change in dispersion index and contact area compared to upright sitting. The f0U11h study investigated the time that older adults spend in sitting while on a rehabilitation ward and how frequently they engage or are assisted to engage in repositioning movements when sitting. The older adults spent the majority of their time in a seated position and did not perf 01111 seated movements at <1 magnitude large enough to redistribute seating interface pressures. The final study investigated the pressure relieving behaviours of SCI individuals during everyday computer use, and the application of an ergonomically adapted computer-based activity to reduce seating interface pressures. The majority of movements perfon11ed by participants in this study had minimal etfect on interface pressures, yet many of the participants believed they performed frequent pressure reliefs. This thesis evidences the need for individual assessments and pressure relieving strategies, and introduces a novel concept of integrating pressure relief within everyday activities.

Abstract:
Saudi Arabia has witnessed rapid development in economic, cultural and social aspects since the discovery of oil a few decades ago. This development involves all the governmental sectors including national parks. The need for national parks has become inevitable. Asir National Park was established to provide recreational sites and to preserve the unique natural and cultural features of the park. Research evaluated the impact of human activities of logging, grazing, hunting, land development and elimination and negligence of traditional architecture on Asir National Park features. A questionnaire, interviews and field observations were conducted to investigate the impact of these activities on Asir National Park. Asir National Park suffers a great deal of pressures from human activities. The local population depends on the park as their source of livelihood and as a traditional habit. The study illustrates the most affected zones where action should be taken to preserve park features.

Debass, Thomas. "Economic Impact Assessment of IPM CRSP Activities in Bangladesh and Uganda: A GIS Application." Thesis, Virginia Tech, 2000. http://hdl.handle.net/10919/34999.

Full text
Abstract:

The purpose of this study is to assist planners and scientists in assessing the economic implications of the USAID-funded Integrated Pest Management-Collaborative Research Support Program (IPM CRSP) research activities. The study presents a framework and a set of procedures for documenting, evaluating and communicating aggregate economic impacts of IPM technologies within targeted areas and across agro-ecological regions.

Performing an economic impact assessment involves consideration of many factors, from the adoption patterns of IPM technologies to the level of benefits and costs producers and consumers can reap from their adoption. Adopting the framework and procedures outlined in this study will help ensure that economic benefits of IPM CRSP activities are consistently and comprehensively evaluated and documented. The assessment process involves identifying and defining alternative pest management strategies, data and information collection, and analytical procedures.

Two case studies are carried out to demonstrate the functionality and practical nature of the framework. Partial budgeting and ex-ante economic surplus analysis are employed to estimate the aggregate benefits of IPM CRSP strategies in Bangladesh and Uganda. In Bangladesh, an altered schedule of hand weeding in cabbage production and Neem leaf powder as an insecticide for eggplants were selected for assessment. In Uganda, the maize variety Longe-1 and seed dressing with Endosulfan for management of bean fly and root rot on beans, are evaluated. Also, a Geographic Information System (GIS) is used to project the transferability of IPM CRSP strategies beyond the primary sites. Data on production, consumption, prices, price elasticities for demand and supply, and experiment costs are gathered and refined to derive aggregate benefits for each country. Expert questionnaires were developed to determine adoption rates, and to elicit information about yield and cost changes due to the adoption of these technologies. Agro-ecological and socio-economic data were collected to facilitate the spatial framework and examine adoption rate patterns. The GIS analysis gives insight into the spatial dimension of economic analysis and complements the effort of the IPM CRSP to globalize its activities.

The research findings show that the IPM practices investigated gave a substantial amount of benefits discounted over thirty years to both consumers and producers. This study has shown that IPM CRSP-induced pest management practices in Bangladesh and Uganda are viable and more profitable production practices than existing farmer practices. Efforts to promote the adoption of these technologies will likely result in more efficient production and greater economic rewards for the farmers, consumers, and in turn for the country as a whole. Finally, the study presents recommendations for further research relating to gender and cross-border trade issues to strengthen the functionality of the framework.

Zhang, Yanjiao. "The Impact of Exposure to Ambient Air Pollution on Educational Outcomes." Thesis, Université d'Ottawa / University of Ottawa, 2017. http://hdl.handle.net/10393/36622.

Full text
Abstract:
In this study, I examine if higher levels of ambient air pollution impact educational outcomes. According to the literature review, CO, O3, PM10 and PM2.5 are found to be four pollutants that could have an impact on cognitive ability, so I focus on these air pollutants. I analyze provincial test results for the province of British Columbia, and Secondary School Literacy Test results from the province of Ontario (OSSLT) with air pollution and weather data corresponding to the locations and dates in which tests took place. A longitudinal approach is used, in which test results are compared within a school over time with a fixed effects model chosen to control for school and year fixed effects. Correlations are found among the four pollutants in the two provinces, therefore, an integrated Air Quality Index (AQI) is calculated to further examine the relationship between air pollution and educational outcomes. In British Columbia, I find that there is a negative impact of ambient air pollution on student’s test results: a one standard deviation increase in AQI leads to a 0.23 percentage points decrease in student average grade. Furthermore, I find that in BC, air pollution’s impact on students with special needs experience about 3.4 times of the average impact of other students. In Ontario, I do not find significant association between OSSLT results and the AQI, and this might be because of not having enough observations in Ontario school dataset and lots of missing data in air pollution dataset. However, the association between ambient air pollution and OSSLT results is found to be negative overall, congruent with results from BC.

Hsu, Helen Chih-Han. "Understanding the impact of tobacco industry promotional activities on youth smoking behaviour." Thesis, University of British Columbia, 2008. http://hdl.handle.net/2429/2495.

Full text
Abstract:
Background: Tobacco marketing has been established as the main motivator for tobacco use among youth. A proliferation of tobacco promotional activities in retail stores has been observed yet little is known about its impact on adolescent smoking behaviours. The purpose of this study is to use secondary data to describe the prevalence of retail tobacco point-of-purchase (PoP) activities, examine its associations with adolescent smoking behaviours, and determine what ecological factors moderate the relationship between PoP activities and student smoking behaviours in British Columbia. Methods: This cross-sectional study surveyed grade 10-11 students from 22 randomly-selected schools in BC on student smoking behaviour and conducted observations in 57 retail stores on tobacco PoP activities located within a 1 km radius of these schools. Descriptive analysis was conducted on retail tobacco PoP variables. Individual data on smoking behaviour and school level data on retailers were linked to analyse the association between retail tobacco PoP activities and student smoking behaviour using logistic regression. Moderating effects of contextual factors were also examined. GIS maps were generated to illustrate study findings. Result: A moderate to strong presence of tobacco PoP activities was observed in all tobacco retail stores located in BC school neighbourhoods. Nearly all stores displayed cigarette products in a visible manner (98.25%) and posted tobacco control signage (94.74%). In this model, proportion of stores in the school neighbourhood with presence of tobacco advertising increased the odds of a student being a smoker (OR = 1.28-3.27). Proportion of stores in the school neighbourhood with presence of tobacco control signage decreased the odds of a student being a smoker (OR = 0.11-0.66). The odds of a student being a smoker increased if they resided on the island compared to living in the lower mainland (OR = 1.11-1.75). Discussion: Convenience stores exhibited more tobacco PoP activities than other store types. Retailers in the school neighbourhood that had tobacco advertisements and tobacco control signage exhibited both detrimental and protective effects on student smoking. This provides supportive evidence to ban tobacco advertising in retail stores and increase efforts for creating an anti-tobacco environment in neighbourhood retail stores. Maps generated served descriptive and hypothesis generating purposes.

Eksi, Emrah. "The impact of the market risk of capital regulations on bank activities." Thesis, Loughborough University, 2006. https://dspace.lboro.ac.uk/2134/7837.

Full text
Abstract:
Banking has a unique role in the well-being of an economy. This role makes banks one of the most heavily regulated and supervised industries. In order to strengthen the soundness and stability of banking systems, regulators require banks to hold adequate capital. While credit risk was the only risk that was covered by the original Basle Accord, with the 1996 amendment, banks have also been required to assign capital for their market risk starting from 1998. In this research, the impact of the market risk capital regulations on bank capital levels and derivative activities is investigated. In addition, this study also evaluates the impact of using different approaches that are allowed to be used while calculating the required market risk capital, as well as the accuracy of VaR models. The implementation of the market risk capital regulations can influence banks either by increasing their capital or by decreasing their trading activities and in particular trading derivative activities. The literature review concerning capital regulations illustrates that in particular the impact of these regulations on bank capital levels and derivative activities is an issue that has not yet been explored. In order to fill this gap, the changes in capital and derivatives usage ratios are modelled by using a partial adjustment framework. The main results of this analysis suggest that the implementation of the market risk capital regulations has a significant and positive impact on the risk-based capital ratios of BHCs. However, the results do not indicate any impact of these regulations on derivative activities. The empirical findings also demonstrate that there is no significant relationship between capital and derivatives. The market risk capital regulations allow the use of either a standardised approach or the VaR methodologies to determine the required capital amounts to cover market risk. In order to evaluate these approaches, firstly differences on bank VaR practices are investigated by employing a documentary analysis. The documentary analysis is conducted to demonstrate the differences in bank VaR practices by comparing the VaR models of 25 international banks. The survey results demonstrate that there, is no industry consensus on the methodology for calculating VaR. This analysis also indicates that the assumptions in estimating VaR models vary considerably among financial institutions. Therefore, it is very difficult for financial market participants to make comparisons across institutions by considering single VaR values. Secondly, the required capital amounts are calculated for two hypothetical foreign exchange portfolios by using both the standardised and three different VaR methodologies, and then these capital amounts are compared. These simulations are conducted to understand to what extent the market risk capital regulations approaches produce different outcomes on the capital levels. The results indicate that the VaR estimates are dependent upon the VaR methodology. Thirdly, three backtesting methodologies are applied to the VaR models. The results indicate that a VaR model that provides accurate estimates for a specific portfolio could fail when the portfolio composition changes. The results of the simulations indicate that the market risk capital regulations do not provide a `level playing field' for banks that are subject to these regulations. In addition, giving an option to banks to determine the VaR methodology could create a moral hazard problem as banks may choose an inaccurate model that provides less required capital amounts.

Abstract:
This study explores the impact of sincerity of terrorists on committing terrorist activities in Turkey. The researcher is a Chief of Police in Turkey and has worked in the Anti-terror Department for a considerable part of his professional career. His professional experience has shown that the more sincere a terrorist is the more violent or heedless the terrorist activity is. Thus this research academically and statistically examines this observation and finds that sincerity affects level of violence. Attachment and adherence to the terrorist organization turn even the characteristically non-violent people into blood seeking terrorists.

Abstract:
After the discovery of the “Minamata” disease, a neurological syndrome in humans caused by severe mercury poisoning, many studies on toxic metals in marine food webs were carried out. In the coastal marine environments, trace elements, deriving from both natural processes and human activities, contribute to marine pollution, posing potential risks to marine ecosystems. This study focuses on trace elements contamination from gold mining activities in marine sediments and in two tissues (body wall and gut) on Holothuria atra, by comparing samples collected in affected and not affected sites in North Sulawesi (Indonesia). This region is affected by industrial and artisanal gold mining activities. While industrial mines generally use cyanidation method, artisanal gold mines still employ Hg amalgamation to extract gold from ores. Mean concentrations of As, Au, Co, Cr, Cu, Hg, Ni, Pb, Sb and Zn resulted significantly higher in surface sediments at sites that receive discharge from mines than at control sites. Mean concentrations of As, Au, Cr, Hg and Ni in body walls of H. atra were significantly higher at sites that receive discharge from mines than at control sites. Mean concentrations of As, Au, Co, Cr, Cu, Hg, Pb, Sb, Sn and Zn in guts of the same specimens were significantly higher at impacted sites. Nevertheless, pollution levels varied according to the typology and oldness of mining activities. By comparing the results of this study with the few data available on trace elements contamination in H. atra, we notice that levels of trace elements in specimens of North Sulawesi are generally higher both in body walls and in guts than found previous studies, characterised by different kind of impacts. Hg resulted the most concerning element both in surface sediment and in H. atra specimens. Further studies are needed to better understand the effect of Hg and other toxic elements in marine ecosystems and in food webs of impacted areas of North Sulawesi.

Workers' right to strike is embedded in the South African Constitution and this right generally reflects a sign of fairness. Strike activities form a vital part of collective bargaining and the supremacy liaison between employers and employees would be severely ruined if workers are not entitled the right to strike. Ever since the right to strike was documented in the South African Constitution, strike actions have been a collective occurrence in the country. Reasons for strikes in South Africa are multi-layered and their effects are harmfully disastrous. Workers are on strikes due to various reasons such as low pay, inequality, and unemployment as a result of union conflicts and the inequitable degree of labour relations. However, strikes would lead to various problems in the economy, such as reduced production, scaring off investors, labour replaced by capital, etc. This study first defines the various key concepts relating to industrial action, before reviewing the theories on strikes as well as the results of past local and empirical studies. The study moves on to use the Department of Labour's 2003-2014 Industrial Action Report data to provide descriptive statistics on strike activities in 1999-2014 by broad industry categories (examining the number of strikes, work hours lost, work days lost, time-loss ratios, principle causes of strikes, most active trade unions involved in strikes), before using a static approach to estimate the value of total production foregone as well as the value foregone as a proportion of gross value added (GVA) by industry in each year as a result of strikes. Finally, the older 1970-1998 strikes data from the International Labour Organization (ILO) is ‘merged’ with the abovementioned 1999-2014 data, to examine the econometric relationship between strikes and business cycles, and it is found that strikes are procyclical.

Abstract:
This thesis covers a period of drastic change in that part of Xhosaland later known as Victoria East. Chapters one and two deal with the clash between the Glasgow missionaries at Lovedale and the amaXhosa who were expected to simply discard their way of life in favour of the new dispensation. Chapter three explains the arrival in the Eastern Cape of the amaMfengu, formerly called abaMbo, and their role in the divisive policies of the colonial government. Chapter four recounts the brief interlude (1836-1846) during which the colonial government tried but ultimately rejected a more equitable model of cross-border relations known as the Treaty System. The final chapter deals with the introduction of direct rule over the newly-created district of Victoria East, and with the policies of Henry Calderwood, its first magistrate, which were artfully constructed to perpetuate ‘Divide and Rule’ so as to maintain a comfortable life for the white settlers in the border area.

Abstract:
Thesis (M. Comm.) -- Central University of Technology, Free State, 2007
From the Stone Age, each nation or group of people has had a distrust of those different from themselves. This is evidenced in various ways, for example, social welfare given to local residents only, scornful names given to foreigners and other ethnic groups and rituals designed to keep themselves separate from others. These incidents of diversity resulted into an unplanned and emergent set of norms, values and beliefs that exert enormous influence on the way in which an organisation operates, how organisational structure is developed, the integration and adaptation of internal and external relationships, as well as the orientation of the underlying values of the organisation. The main aim of changing culture is to improve organisational performance. To achieve this aim, it requires an understanding of the underlying assumptions and values that determine what is important in an organisation as well as assessment of the impact of culture on operational efficiency. The impact of organisational culture is identified through the negative and positive outcomes of mining activities, and is illustrated by employee satisfaction, job commitment, organisational loyalty, turnover, absenteeism and productivity. The aim of this research study was to identify the characteristics of organisational culture and evaluate the impact of organisational culture on gold mining activities in the Free State. The methodology used in this study comprises of empirical as well as a literature study. Questionnaires and interviews were used to gather information for the empirical study. The empirical study revealed that firstly, organisational culture is created partially by leaders, and that one of the most critical functions of leadership is the creation and the management of culture. Lastly, organisational culture emerges when employees think, believe and act according to the pressures and priorities of their environment. Unfortunately, employees do not set aside their cultural values and lifestyle preferences when they come to work. It is the responsibility of the management to create an environment that is conducive to a healthy working environment. This study established that the necessity to control the workforce productivity need not be accompanied by ruthless or aggressive exploitation of cultural management, but by reliance on employees’ capability to exercise judgement to cope effectively with environmental uncertainty. Rules, norms and strategies developed cannot “fit” every circumstance but encourage conformity rather than creativity, and compliance rather than commitment.

Abstract:

The political and social transformation process in South Africa is forcing organisations to avoid the sensitive, unpleasant and potentially volatile behaviour at workplace that can arise when groups or individuals who differ work together or come into close contact with each other. Therefore, management developed a corporate culture which creates an environment that is conducive to performance improvement, shapes the way people act and interact, as a result, this culture influences how things get done. The corporate culture encompasses the organisation's goals, business ethics and dominant ideologies. Based on the results of this study, these cultural changes ought to be driven by the fact that employees respond to the way in which the organisation treats them. The research aims to investigate the impact of organisational culture on the gold mining activities. The impact of organisational culture is demonstrated through a sense of identity and unity of purpose by the members of the organisation, commitment of employees to their work and existence of strategies and programmes which provide guidance on what is expected. The premise is that organisational culture determines socialisation, power relationship, policies and procedures, reward systems, communication systems and ideology, all of which have a significant impact on the day to day experiences of all employees.

Abstract:
This research thesis seeks to identify what factors impact the decision to outsource HR activities, identify what factors affect employee attitudes regarding the outsourcing decision, and discuss how these attitudes impact organisational outcomes. This research thesis employed a modified Delphi technique to assess the impact of outsourcing decisions. Twenty participants, including Managing Directors (MD), Managers, and Human Resource (HR) employees, representing five organisations that either outsource some or the majority of HR related activities or are providers of HR outsourcing services were involved in the study. The research findings point to three main conclusions: (1) that organisations typically undertake outsourcing of the HR function in order to gain competitive advantage, (2) there is a relationship between the decision-making process of outsourcing and employee attitudes, and (3) organisational policies, including effective communication, being aware of the knowledge perspective of the outsourcing decision, and employee involvement in the decision, can minimum negative emotions, attitudes and behaviour towards the outsourcing decision. The research established a range of theoretical and practical recommendations, about the outsourcing decision-making process and the implications on employee perceptions.

Full text
Abstract:
Aim: The aim of the thesis was to investigate the impact of gaze-based assistive technology on daily activities in children with severe physical impairments and without speech. The objectives were to develop and pilot a gaze-based assistive technology intervention (GAT intervention) at home and in school for these children and to understand its impact on daily activities as experienced by their parents. Methods: Study I was a pilot study in which the basic components that were developed for the intervention were evaluated for students with physical impairments. The study aimed at improving the use of computers as assistive technology (AT) in school. Based on the findings in Study I, the GAT intervention was developed. The GAT intervention aimed at implementing gaze-based AT in daily activities. It consisted of two parts; having access to gaze-based AT and having access to services from a multi professional communication team during nine to ten months. Studies II-IV concerned gazebased AT for children with severe physical impairments without speech who participated in the GAT intervention. The participants were ten children (ages 1-15) (Studies II, III), and their parents (Study IV). Studies II and III had longitudinal designs and children were followed during 15-20 months with repeated measurements before, after and at follow-up. In Study II children’s repertoire of computer activities, extent of use, and goal attainment with gaze-based AT was evaluated, as well as parents’ satisfaction with the AT and with services. In Study III children’s eye gaze performance when using gaze-based AT was examined. In Study IV, parents were interviewed twice with the aim of  exploring their experiences of children’s gaze-based AT use in daily life. In Study IV a hermeneutical approach was used. Results: The findings of Study I showed that the basic components of intervention improved the use of computers in school. Study II showed an increased repertoire of computer activities with the gazebased AT, maintained use in daily activities for all at follow up, and that all children attained goals for gaze-based AT use in daily activities. Parents were satisfied with the gaze-based AT, and with the services in the GAT intervention. In study III, nine children improved in eye gaze performance over time when using the gaze-based AT in daily activities. Study IV revealed that children’s gaze-based AT usage in daily activities made a difference to parents since the children demonstrated agency, and showed their personality and competencies by using gaze-based AT, and for the parents this opened up infinite possibilities for the child to do and learn things. Overall, children’s gaze-based AT usage provided parents with hope of a future in which their children could develop and have influence in life. Conclusions: This thesis shows that these children with severe physical impairments and without speech acquired sufficient gaze control skills to use gaze-based AT for daily activities in the home and at school. The gaze-based AT had a positive impact on performing activities, for example, play activities and communication- and interaction-related activities. For the parents, children’s gaze-based AT usage made a difference since it shaped a hope of a better future for their children, where they can develop and gain influence in their future life. Furthermore, the children continued to perform daily activities with gaze-based AT over time. This finding suggests that key persons were provided with sufficient knowledge and skills to support children in maintained use of gaze-based AT after withdrawal of the services provided in the GAT intervention.

Abstract:
The purpose of this study was to determine the relationship of servant leadership characteristics present in agricultural educators\' leadership styles to the use of service- learning activities in their curriculum. The study was guided by three questions: (a) which the servant leadership variables do agricultural educators exhibit?, (b) how many service-learning activities do those educators incorporate into their teaching curriculum?, and (c) does a statistically significant relationship exists between servant leadership variables exhibited by agricultural educators and the number of service-learning activities incorporated into their curriculum. An on-line and written survey was conducted with agricultural educators who were members of the National Association of Agricultural Educators (NAAE) and lived in NAAE Region 1. The survey used Ann Todd Abel\'s Servant Leadership Inventory to analyze the servant leadership characteristics and behavior exhibited by educators. The results of the study provide an overview of the most frequently exhibited servant leadership characteristics and behaviors by agricultural educators and quantitatively analyze the number of service-learning activities with-in their curriculum. The results of the study also highlight the types of service-learning activities incorporated into the educators\' curriculum.

Abstract:
Utilizing a sample of community-residing older adults, this pretest-posttest design evaluated the short term (approximately 1 week) impact on everyday functioning of Stress Inoculation (SI) training, a cognitive-behavioral intervention that is essentially a coping skills enhancement program. The targets of training were anxiety and concern about being able to successfully perform everyday living tasks. The training program was contrasted with a no contact (waiting list) control. In an effort to maximize the practical aspects of this study, the assessment battery included the use of two ecologically valid measures of everyday problem solving skills (one self-rated and one interviewer-rated). Also included were a measure of everyday intelligence widely used in gerontological research, two measures of self-efficacy, a geriatric depression scale, a state-trait anxiety scale, and a self-report measure of failures in perception, memory, and motor function. The results suggest that Stress Inoculation training is an effective intervention for improving everyday competence but that personal perceptions of self-efficacy and the emotional states of anxiety and depression mediate treatment effects. In general, only persons with lower levels of self-efficacy and higher levels of anxiety and/or depression saw improvement in their cognitive performance following SI training.

Dube, Siziwe. "The impact of education on an entrepreneur’s environmental scanning activities in growing their business." Diss., University of Pretoria, 2010. http://hdl.handle.net/2263/23801.

Full text
Abstract:
This research project investigated the impact of education on an entrepreneur’s opportunity and threat identification skills through the environmental scanning activities and modes that the entrepreneur adopted. The aim of the research was to identify the types and levels of education which entrepreneurs should have in order that they can scan their environments effectively and achieve high growth rates. South Africa, like other developing countries, has a dire need to address poverty. Entrepreneurship is seen as a vehicle for poverty alleviation and socio-economic empowerment (Schlemer & Hudson, 2004) and a means of enhancing South Africa’s global competitiveness (Rogerson, 2004). The research was conducted with a view that it would contribute to the lessons of how to achieve entrepreneurial success. The study was conducted using quantitative research methodology. The target population was entrepreneurs in South Africa, within the Information Technology, Construction and Advertising industries. The study found that entrepreneurs with a secondary education scanned less effectively than entrepreneurs with tertiary qualifications. This finding is synonymous with low income countries where there is pressure to develop businesses. The research also found that entrepreneurs with a science background scanned the environment more than entrepreneurs with other qualifications and achieved higher revenue growth levels than other entrepreneurs. Chaudhry, Zahara Latif. "Examining the impact of caspase activities in PD animal model & differentiated ReNcell VM." Thesis, University of Bedfordshire, 2015. http://hdl.handle.net/10547/601101.

Full text
Abstract:
Parkinson's disease (PD) is a neurodegenerative disorder that is characterised by uncontrollable shaking, muscular rigidity and cognitive impairment, due to low levels of dopamine caused by loss of dopamine containing neurons (DCN). The loss of DCN has been strongly associated with Caspase mediated apoptotic death. At present there are many studies that indicate exercise is beneficial in PD treatment, but there is a lack of research exploring the potential pathways, which exercise can activate and suppress to provide such positive and even negative effects. This study is the first to explore the effect of treadmill exercise on the level of Caspases, along with CAMK-IV protein in different brain regions of MPTP-treated rat model, using WB analysis. The results of this research has demonstrated reduction or completely suppression of some active Caspases, as well as, elevated amount of CAMK-IV in different brain regions of exercised PD animal model. To determine how exercise is reducing and inhibiting activation of Caspases, the first step was to identify how Caspases are stimulated, using ReNcell VM stem cell line that had been differentiated and treated with 6OHDA. The results of the study demonstrated 6OHDA triggered Caspase mediated apoptotic death of dDCN via PERK ER stress and NFκB classical pathway. IF, WB and cell viability analysis, using a wide range of inhibitors, showed that Caspase-2 is activated by the PERK pathway of ER stress and NFB classical pathway in 6OHDA treated dDCN. 6OHDA triggered activation of Caspase- 8 by the classical pathway in NFB mediated death of dDCN. 6OHDA triggered Caspase-4 activation but the exact mechanism involved remains to be identified. Only through understanding the molecular pathways regulating death of DCN in PD, new potential targets for therapy may be identified, which may ultimately reduce further death of DCN and slow PD progression. This proposed study has the potential to seek for more efficient drugs, which can suppress Caspase activation by targeting key targets in the pathways that the Caspases follow. These new specific targeted drugs could be used with treadmill exercise to achieve maximum effect, by slowing down or inhibiting further death of DCN.

This study was done by planning and actual implementation of a series of horticultural activitites to a group of students with special needs, to understand the teacher-student interactions, and the impact of these horticultural activities upon students’ experientical learning experience. This study was done with a qualitative study in minds, where transcripts from classroom teaching records, notes taken by this researcher, lesson plans, and teacher’s reflection journals were used to achieve the designated objectives. The target subjects were seven students receiving special education at a certain elementary school in Taipei County. Thirty six classes were conducted over eighteen weeks, two sessions per week. Because students with oral abilities were required for this research, the samples were focused on the three students who could speak and the other students made a lesser contribution. There were nine teaching activities in the research which were: A. Preparation period: dividing students into groups, introduction, set rules, practice the use of gardening tools. B. Cooperation stage: preparing school land. C. Campus tour: get to know the plants around on campus. D. Plants search and indetification stage: identifing the special features of the individual plants. E. Propagation stage: cutting propagation of Ruellia Brittoniana. F. Transplanting plants stage: Setcreasea Pallida. G. Plant growing period. H.Cultivate plants. I. Reaping the harvest stage: harvest and sharing. The research found that school horticultural activities initiated the special students’ learning in the natural science field, providing them opportunities to learn by doing and the teacher had a chance to reflect on his own teaching methods. It was also advised that future researchers might be interested in the investigation of this field further to get backup for consultation, asking for parents’ assistance, or to use school unused facilities, giving special students adequate chances to practice and make good use of questioning and probing skills to get to know more about special students’ learning.
