Abstract:
Abstract Evolutionary changes during the process of sex chromosome differentiation in Drosophila miranda are associated with massive DNA rearrangements. Comparing the DNA structure of the larval cuticle protein (Lcp) region from the X2 and neo-Y chromosome pair, we observed insertions, deletions and a large duplication at the neo-Y chromosomal locus. The duplication encompasses a complete copy of the neo-Y allele of Lcp2, and the ISY3 and the ISY4 insertion sequences. The latter was identified as a retrotransposon, termed TRIM. ISY3 shows DNA sequence similarity to P element homologs identified in the Drosophila obscura species group. We were interested in mechanistic aspects generating the duplication. We cannot exclude unequivocally that unequal sister-chromatid exchange could give rise to the observed duplication; however, recombination is a rare event in Drosophila males. Location and sequence of the retrotransposon TRIM served as molecular markers allowing us to reconstruct two intrachromosomal transposition events that could lead to the observed duplication.

Abstract:
When two brief sounds arrive at a listener's ears nearly simultaneously from different directions, localization of the sounds is described by “the precedence effect.” At inter-stimulus delays (ISDs) <5 ms, listeners typically report hearing not two sounds but a single fused sound. The reported location of the fused image depends on the ISD. At ISDs of 1–4 ms, listeners point near the leading source (localization dominance). As the ISD is decreased from 0.8 to 0 ms, the fused image shifts toward a location midway between the two sources (summing localization). When an inter-stimulus level difference (ISLD) is imposed, judgements shift toward the more intense source. Spatial hearing, including the precedence effect, is thought to depend on the auditory cortex. Therefore we tested the hypothesis that the activity of cortical neurons signals the perceived location of fused pairs of sounds. We recorded the unit responses of cortical neurons in areas A1 and A2 of anesthetized cats. Single broadband clicks were presented from various frontal locations. Paired clicks were presented with various ISDs and ISLDs from two loudspeakers located 50° to the left and right of midline. Units typically responded to single clicks or paired clicks with a single burst of spikes. Artificial neural networks were trained to recognize the spike patterns elicited by single clicks from various locations. The trained networks were then used to identify the locations signaled by unit responses to paired clicks. At ISDs of 1–4 ms, unit responses typically signaled locations near that of the leading source in agreement with localization dominance. Nonetheless the responses generally exhibited a substantial undershoot; this finding, too, accorded with psychophysical measurements. As the ISD was decreased from ∼0.4 to 0 ms, network estimates typically shifted from the leading location toward the midline in agreement with summing localization. Furthermore a superposed ISLD shifted network estimates toward the more intense source, reaching an asymptote at an ISLD of 15–20 dB. To allow quantitative comparison of our physiological findings to psychophysical results, we performed human psychophysical experiments and made acoustical measurements from the ears of cats and humans. After accounting for the difference in head size between cats and humans, the responses of cortical units usually agreed with the responses of human listeners, although a sizable minority of units defied psychophysical expectations.

Abstract:
Pulmonary hypertension (PH) is classified into five groups based on disease etiology but there is only limited information on the prognostic value of exercise testing in non-group 1 PH. In group 1 PH, the incremental shuttle walking test (ISWT) distance has been shown to correlate with pulmonary hemodynamics and predict survival without a ceiling effect. This study assessed the ISWT in non-group 1 PH. Data were retrieved from the ASPIRE Registry (Assessing the Spectrum of Pulmonary hypertension Identified at a REferral centre) for consecutive patients diagnosed with PH. Patients were required to have been systematically assessed as group 2–5 PH and to have a baseline ISWT within three months of cardiac catheterization. Patients were stratified according to incremental shuttle walk test distance (ISWD) and ISWT distance percent predicted (ISWD%pred). A total of 479 patients with non-group 1 PH were identified. ISWD and ISWD%pred correlated significantly with symptoms and hemodynamic severity. ISWD and ISWD%pred predicted survival with no ceiling effect. The test was prognostic in groups 2, 3, and 4. ISWD and ISWD%pred and change in ISWD and ISWD%pred at one year were all significant predictors of outcome. In patients with non-group 1 PH the ISWT is a simple non-invasive test that is easy to perform, is predictive of survival at baseline and follow-up, reflects change, and can be used in the assessment of PH of any etiology.

Abstract:
The study aims to investigate the Islamic Social Reporting Disclosure (ISRD) practicesin Sharia Banks of Indonesia and determine the non financial factors that may influence to level of ISRD on 2010 – 2012. The samples in this study are 30 annual reports of sharia banks for three years. Level of ISRD is measured by ISR index that have six categories including investment and finance, corporate governance, product and services, employee, society, and environment. This study identified three non financial factors that influence to level of ISRD such as Media Exposure, main institusional ownership, and Islamic governance score (IG-score). Average ISR disclosure for three years had reached 55%. The test result by multiple linear regression test showed that only Media Exposure and IG-score have a significant to level of ISRD positively. On the other side, main institusional ownership doesn’t have a significant to level of ISRD. In addition, this study found profitability as control variable doesn’t have a significant to level ISRD too.

Abstract:
Background: Pyogenic spine infections (PSIs) are challenging to diagnose and treat. People who inject drugs (PWID) are at increased risk and contribute to rising PSI incidence. Objective: To analyze trends and characterize PSI in persons who do and do not inject drugs in northeast New York State (NYS), a predominantly rural region. Methods: A retrospective study of PSI patients at a regional tertiary care hospital from 2007 to 2018 was conducted. PSI incidence, population demographics, microbiology, surgical interventions, length of stay (LOS), and costs were compared between injection substance use disorder (ISUD) and non-ISUD cohorts. Results: Two hundred and seventy patients (59 ISUD and 211 non-ISUD) were included in this study. PSI incidence due to ISUD increased 1175% during the study time periods. The median age of the ISUD and non-ISUD cohorts was 39 and 65, respectively. Staphylococcus aureus was the most common causative organism, although a variety of bacterial and fungal pathogens were identified. Nearly half of the patients in each cohort required surgical intervention. Median acute care LOS was 12 days and comparable between cohorts. However, the ISUD cohort was frequently discharged against medical advice, or transferred back to acute care hospitals to complete antibiotic courses. Median inpatient hospital costs were approximately $25,000 and were comparable between cohorts. These costs do not reflect inpatient costs once the patient was transferred back to the referring hospital, nor costs for outpatient care. Medicaid and Medicare were the most common primary insurance payers for the ISUD and non-ISUD cohorts, respectively. Conclusions: Incidence of PSI has increased significantly coincident with the opioid epidemic and has had significant impact on a large, rural region of NYS. PSIs consume large amounts of healthcare resources. This study can inform hospitals and public health agencies regarding the need for substance abuse harm reduction strategies.

Abstract:
Abstract Introduction/Objective Insulin-like Growth Factor 1 (IGF-1) is a biomarker for the evaluation of growth hormone activity in the hypothalamic-pituitary axis. The current most common methodology for IGF-1 measurement is automated immunometric assays. In this study, we compared the IGF-1 on Siemens Immulite 2000, DiaSorin Liaison XL and IDS iSYS. Methods/Case Report Residual 30-110 serum specimens were randomly selected from routine hospital orders. IGF- 1 was measured on these three platforms and compared with Passing-Bablok regression. Bias was evaluated using the Bland-Altman method. Results (if a Case Study enter NA) Weighted Deming regression analysis showed approximately 80% and 56% positive bias on IDS iSYS and DiaSorin Liaison, compared with Siemens Immulite (iSYS=1.81*Immulite-117.65, r=0.91; Liaison=1.56*Immulite-4.58, r=0.98). There was approximately 8% positive bias on Liaison, compared with iSYS (Liaison=1.08*iSYS+0.56, r=0.99). The Passing-Bablok regression analysis revealed approximately 67% and 54% positive bias (iSYS=1.67*Immulite-75, r=0.91; Liaison=1.54*Immulite-3.44, r=0.91). Approximately 8% positive bias on Liaison was observed, compared with iSYS (Liaison=1.08*iSYS+5.65, r=0.99). The Bland-Altman plot showed the agreement between iSYS and Immulite IGF-1 was on average 129.6±123.3 ng/mL, 98.6±148.8 ng/mL between Liaison and Immulite and 37.0±46.5 ng/mL between Liaison and iSYS. Conclusion Immunoassays rely on the specificity of antibodies. There are wide variations between different immunoassay platforms for IGF-1 measurement. The standardization of IGF-1 assay is lack. It would be a challenge for clinicians to monitor IGF-1 or treat the patients with pituitary disorders, when switching to another platform. The potential impact of the variations in IGF-1 measurement between different immunoassay platforms should be aware.

Abstract:
A novel type of integral squeeze film damper (ISFD) is proposed to reduce and isolate vibration excitations of the gear system through bearing to the foundation. Four ISFD designs were tested experimentally with an open first-grade spur gear system. Vibration reduction characteristics were experimentally studied at different speeds for cases where ISFD elastic damping supports were simultaneously installed on the driving and driven shafts, installed on the driven shaft, or only installed on the driving shaft. Experimental results show that the ISFD elastic damping support can effectively reduce shock vibration of the gear system. Additionally, resonant modulation in gear shafts caused by meshing impact was significantly reduced. Different vibration amplitudes of gear shafts with ISFD installed only on driven or driving shafts were compared. Results indicated that vibration reduction is better when ISFD is only installed on the driven shaft than on the driving shaft.

Abstract:
Abstract Sulfoacetaldehyde reductase (IsfD) is a member of the short-chain dehydrogenase/reductase (SDR) family, involved in nitrogen assimilation from aminoethylsulfonate (taurine) in certain environmental and human commensal bacteria. IsfD catalyzes the reversible NADPH-dependent reduction of sulfoacetaldehyde, which is generated by transamination of taurine, forming hydroxyethylsulfonate (isethionate) as a waste product. In the present study, the crystal structure of Klebsiella oxytoca IsfD in a ternary complex with NADPH and isethionate was solved at 2.8 Å, revealing residues important for substrate binding. IsfD forms a homotetramer in both crystal and solution states, with the C-terminal tail of each subunit interacting with the C-terminal tail of the diagonally opposite subunit, forming an antiparallel β sheet that constitutes part of the substrate-binding site. The sulfonate group of isethionate is stabilized by a hydrogen bond network formed by the residues Y148, R195, Q244 and a water molecule. In addition, F249 from the diagonal subunit restrains the conformation of Y148 to further stabilize the orientation of the sulfonate group. Mutation of any of these four residues into alanine resulted in a complete loss of catalytic activity for isethionate oxidation. Biochemical investigations of the substrate scope of IsfD, and bioinformatics analysis of IsfD homologs, suggest that IsfD is related to the promiscuous 3-hydroxyacid dehydrogenases with diverse metabolic functions.

Abstract:
Finite-difference (FD) schemes, especially staggered-grid FD (SFD) schemes, have been widely implemented for wave extrapolation in numerical modeling, whereas the conventional approach to compute the SFD coefficients is based on the Taylor-series expansion (TE) method, which leads to unignorable great errors at large wavenumbers in the solution of wave equations. We have developed new optimal explicit SFD (ESFD) and implicit SFD (ISFD) schemes based on the minimax approximation (MA) method with a Remez algorithm to enhance the numerical modeling accuracy. Starting from the wavenumber dispersion relations, we derived the optimal ESFD and ISFD coefficients by using the MA method to construct the objective functions, and solve the objective functions with the Remez algorithm. We adopt the MA-based ESFD and ISFD coefficients to solve the spatial derivatives of the elastic-wave equations and perform numerical modeling. Numerical analyses indicated that the MA-based ESFD and ISFD schemes can overcome the disadvantages of conventional methods by improving the numerical accuracy at large wavenumbers. Numerical modeling examples determined that under the same discretizations, the MA-based ESFD and ISFD schemes lead to greater accuracy compared with the corresponding conventional ESFD or ISFD scheme, whereas under the same numerical precision, the shorter operator length can be adopted for the MA-based ESFD and ISFD schemes, so that the computation time is further decreased.

Abstract:
Background: Overcorrection of serum sodium (SNa) during therapy of hyponatremia can result in osmotic demyelination syndrome. Our aim was to determine the relationship between the isotonic saline solution dose (ISSD) administered and the 24-h SNa increase (24SNa) in patients with hypovolemic hyponatremia (HH). Methods: Retrospective study of HH patients treated with ISS in a tertiary hospital of Madrid, Spain, between 1 January–30 May 2019. The 24-h ISSD received and corresponding 24SNa were calculated. The latter was classified as 3 groups: ≥8 mmol/L, ≥6 mmol/L, or <4 mmol/L. Multivariate regression analyses were performed and ROC curves calculated to study the relationship between ISSD and 24SNa. Results: Thirty patients were included, age 72 years (60–80), 50% were women. 24SNa was ≥8 mmol/L/24 h in 33%, ≥6 mmol/L/24 h in 50%, and <4 mmol/L/24 h in 30%. Median ISSD in each group was: 32 mL/kg/24 h (29–37), 31 mL/kg/24 h (25–33), and 20 mL/kg/24 h (14–22), respectively. An ISSD ≥ 30 mL/kg/24 h had an odds ratio (OR) of 16 (95% CI: 2.5–95.1; p = 0.004) for a 24SNa ≥8 mmol/L, with a sensitivity and specificity of 80%. Conclusions: The 24SNa depends on ISSD. An ISSD between 23–30 mL/kg/24 h seems to be safe and effective.

Abstract:
Isolated sulfite oxidase deficiency (ISOD) is a rare autosomal recessive neuro-metabolic disorder caused by a mutation in the sulfite oxidase (SUOX) gene situated on chromosome 12. Due to the deficiency of this mitochondrial enzyme (sulfite oxidase), the oxidative degradation of toxic sulfites is disrupted. The most common form of this disease has an early onset (classical ISOD) in the neonatal period, with hypotonia, poor feeding and intractable seizures, mimicking hypoxic-ischaemic encephalopathy. The evolution is rapidly progressive to severe developmental delay, microcephaly and early death. Unfortunately, there is no effective treatment and the prognosis is very poor. In this article, we described the evolution of early continuous electroencephalography (EEG) in a case of ISOD with neonatal onset, as severely encephalopathic background, with refractory seizures and distinct delta-beta complexes. The presence of the delta-beta complexes might be a diagnostic marker in ISOD. We also performed a literature review of published cases of neonatal ISOD that included EEG monitoring.

Abstract:
OBJECTIVE: To determine reference values for incremental shuttle walk distance (ISWD) and peak physiological responses during the incremental shuttle walk test (ISWT), as well as to develop a series of predictive equations for those variables in healthy adults. METHODS: We evaluated 103 healthy participants ≥ 40 years of age (54 women and 49 men). We fitted each participant with a gas analysis system for use during the ISWT. Oxygen consumption (VO2), carbon dioxide production, minute ventilation, heart rate (HR), ISWD, and maximal walking velocity (MWV) were obtained as primary outcomes. We also assessed hand grip strength (HGS) and lean body mass (LBM). RESULTS: The regression analysis models, including physiological variables, ISWD, and MWV (adjusted for age, body mass, height, and sex), produced R2 values ranging from 0.40 to 0.65 (for HR and peak VO2, respectively). Using the models including LBM or HGS, we obtained no significant increase in the R2 values for predicting peak VO2, although the use of those models did result in slight increases in the R2 values for ISWD and MWV (of 8% and 12%, respectively). The variables ISWD, MWV, and ISWD × body mass, respectively, explained 76.7%, 73.3%, and 81.2% of peak VO2 variability. CONCLUSIONS: Our results provide reference values for ISWD and physiological responses to the ISWT, which can be properly estimated by determining simple demographic and anthropometric characteristics in healthy adults ≥ 40 years of age. The ISWT could be used in assessing physical fitness in the general adult population and in designing individualized walking programs.

Abstract:
Introduction: Blood cultures are the gold standard for identifying bloodstream infections. The Clinical and Laboratory Standards Institute recommends a blood culture contamination rate of <3%. Contamination can lead to misdiagnosis, increased length of stay and hospital costs, unnecessary testing and antibiotic use. These reasons led to the development of initial specimen diversion devices (ISDD). The purpose of this study is to evaluate the impact of an initial specimen diversion device on rates of blood culture contamination in the emergency department. Methods: This was a retrospective, multi-site study including patients who had blood cultures drawn in an emergency department. February 2018 to April 2018, when an ISDD was not utilized, was compared with June 2019 to August 2019, a period where an ISDD was being used. The primary outcome was total blood culture contamination. Secondary outcomes were total hospital cost, hospital and intensive care unit length of stay, vancomycin days of use, vancomycin serum concentrations obtained, and repeat blood cultures obtained. Results: A statistically significant difference was found in blood culture contamination rates in the Pre-ISDD group vs the ISDD group (7.47% vs 2.59%, p<0.001). None of the secondary endpoints showed a statistically significant difference. Conclusions: Implementation of an ISDD reduces blood culture contamination in a statistically significant manner. However, we were unable to capture any statistically significant differences in the secondary outcomes.

Abstract:
This study examines international standard bibliographic description (ISBD) as standard for quality book publishing in Nigeria. It discusses ISBD as it affects quality book publishing. Three Universities in the South-South region and 250 publishers sampled from six states of the federation were used for the study. The instruments used were validated questionnaire and standardized checklist of the book. One null hypothesis was formulated and tested. The data collected were analyzed using simple percentages and Pearson Product Moment Correlation Coefficient (PPMC). The finding of the study shows that there is a significant relationship between ISBD and the quality of books published in Nigeria with regard to authorship, title, place of publication, year of publication, publisher’s name, ISBN, copyright, bibliography and index. The study concluded that ISBD adds quality to published books.

Cilj. Cilj je rada teorijski i kroz primjere prikazati katalogizaciju razglednica i njihovih digitalnih reprodukcija po ISBD-u. Pristup/metodologija. U radu se redom prolaze skupine ISBD-a i objašnjava njihova primjena na razglednice i njihove digitalne reprodukcije putem triju izabranih primjera. Rezultati. Abstract:
Ketuanan Melayu” is a conception of Malay political hegemony in Malaysia. The terminology was firstly introduced by a member of Parliament of Malaysia from the United Malay National Organization, namely Dato’ Abdullah Ahmad, in a speech offered at the Institute of Intenational Affairs, Singapura, Agustus 30, 1986. The speech was originally aimed at countering the negative propaganda proposed by the Malaysian Indian and the Malaysian Chinese, who accused that the special socio-political privileges given to the indigenous Malaysian peoples in the Malaysia’s Constitution (partaicularly in article 153) and the affirmative discriminative New Economic Policy of 1971 have been a servere strategy to condemn the Indian and Chinese Malaysians. On the other hand, the Malays in Malaysia traced the idea of Malay political hegemony from the political situation in the period of Malay kingdom of Melaka in the 15th century. They considered the period of Melaka as the golden age of Malay political sovereignty in Selat Melaka. When Melaka was occupied by the Portuegese in the 16th century, and followed by the Dutch in the 17-18th centuries, the political sovereignty of the Malays in the Malaysian Peninsula was carried on by the newly subsequent Malay kingdoms, such as Johor, Kedah, Kelantan, and others. In this article, I proposed that what is now called Malay political hegemony could be compared to what was called beschikkingsrecht in Dutch language, in the colonial period of Indonesia. This terminology was introduced by an adat law scholar, van Vollenhoven, in 1905, referring to the sovereignty of the native peoples in Malay Archipelago over their land and political state. Lastly I find the debate on the Malay political hegemony in Malaysia recently, whether between the natives versus the immigrants, or between the ruling Malays versus the opposition Malays, are pertaining with 6 articles in the Constitution and Act of Malaysian Armforce of 1972. This set of rules is knownly called Wasiat Raja-raja Melayu (The Wasiat of the Malay Sultans). Therefore, I conclude, the Malay political hegemony is constitutionalized, thus it is unnecessary for the Malays to boasting it anymore. The real problems of the Malay political hegemony now in Malaysia rests on the way it has been implemented by the Malaysian government.

AbstractInfantile-onset saccade initiation delay (ISID), commonly known as congenital ocular motor apraxia, is characterized by difficulty in triggering horizontal volitional saccades. It typically presents with head thrusts in infancy and is often associated with developmental delay. Patients with ISID are reported to have abnormalities in various brain regions including the corpus callosum, brainstem, and cerebellum. We propose that ISID is caused by the disruption or disconnection of axons linking analogous brain regions involved in processing saccades across the two sides of the brain or bilateral damage to these regions.

Information systems development (ISD) is a complex process involving interconnected resources, stake holders, and outcomes. Understanding factors contributing to ISD success has attracted keen interest from both researchers and practitioners, and many research studies have been published in this area. However, most studies focus on one or two factors affecting ISD success. A holistic view of factors impacting ISD success is missing. This paper synthesizes past research on the topic and proposes a unified model on ISD success through a systematic and comprehensive literature review. The unified model highlights that ISD is a complex and interactive process involving individual, team, and organization factors, as well as ISD methodology. These factors impact the ISD process as well as its success.

The “inerter-spring-damper” (ISD) suspension system is a suspension system composed of an inerter, spring, and damper. To study the ride comfort and stability of the vehicle by using the ISD suspension system, a vehicle model with ISD suspension is established in this paper. The vehicle model including vertical, pitch, roll, and yaw motion of the vehicle body. Based on the vehicle model, the differential equation of motion with ISD suspension is obtained. The dynamic responses of the ISD suspension system are investigated by using different road excitations. At the same time, the influence of coupled excitation and single excitation on the vibration reduction performance of the ISD suspension system is studied. Then, the dynamic responses of ISD suspension and passive suspension are compared, and the improvement of comprehensive vibration reduction performance of ISD suspension system is quantitatively analyzed. The numerical results illustrate the ISD suspension has the optimal vehicle speed under different road excitations, and the comprehensive vibration reduction performance of the ISD suspension is the best when driving at the optimal vehicle speed. Under different types of road excitation, ISD suspension shows excellent comprehensive vibration reduction performance. ISD suspension is more suitable for vibration reduction of complex roads than that of a single road.

Abstract:
Objectives To construct an Index of Sexual Health Deprivation (ISHD), examine its sensitivity, investigate the association between the ISHD and the Index of Multiple Deprivation 2010 (IMD2010), and interpret the observed geographic variation. Methods: The modified IMD method was informed by the IMD2010. Thirteen profiles relating to sexual health were selected and grouped into four domains. The observed profile values for each primary care trust (PCT) were smoothed and converted to a normal distribution before principal component analysis. Loadings were used to calculate profile weights. Domain scores were calculated by combining weighted profiles, which were combined to create the ISHD. A Bayesian approach acted as a comparator for the ISHD. Results: Substantial variation in sexual health deprivation was seen across strategic health authorities (SHA). The London SHA had the highest proportion of PCTs (61%) among the most deprived quartile, followed by North-West SHA (29%). More than half of PCTs in East of England (71%), South Central (56%) and South-West (50%) SHAs fell into the least deprived quartile. No PCTs within the East of England, South Central and South-West SHAs were in the most deprived quartile. Only 57% of PCTs were attributed to the same quartile of the ISHD as the IMD2010. The modified IMD method and the Bayesian approach produced consistent results. Conclusions: The ISHD provides a robust picture of the geography of sexual health and shows a weak association with the IMD2010. It can be used to guide public health action to reduce the geographical gradient in sexual health inequality.

Abstract:
This paper examines the design and implementation process of Integrated Strategies for Sustainable Urban Development (ISUD), as well as their main effects and lessons learned in two European cities: Barcelona in Spain, a vibrant European metropolis, and Évora in Portugal, a medium-sized city with a world heritage historic centre. The former is facing socioeconomic challenges in some of its neighbourhoods, while the latter, a regional capital of an already depopulated region, Alentejo, is facing further depopulation and socioeconomic challenges. Following from a qualitative analysis of ISUD and other urban plans implemented in past decades, the article employs a framework with five analytical dimensions, based on the policy cycle (priority setting, participatory approaches, implementation strategy, collaboration networks, and measuring results and impact). These provide a framework to identify best practices. The findings demonstrate that ISUD in both cities provides impetus for sustainable strategic planning, but can be strengthened in particular via the active involvement of citizens and stakeholders in the elaboration and implementation of these ISUD. Conversely, the results demonstrate mounting challenges that many urban planners in medium-sized towns face in relation to inverting depopulation trends, raising further questions of to what extent European Cohesion policy, and ISUD in particular, can contribute to territorial cohesion objectives whilst also aiming to achieve other policy goals.

Abstract:
Over the last three decades, much IS research has focused on information systems development (ISD) risk and its impacts on ISD success. While these studies have greatly advanced the understanding of the nomological network of ISD risk and success, the literature is still not sufficiently clear on the firm performance impacts of these concepts. Linking ISD risk and success to firm performance is important so as to better understand whether ISD projects can have broader firm-level implications, for example, in terms of providing firms with a competitive advantage. To address this research need, the present research note advances propositions regarding the linkage between ISD risk, success, and firm-level performance (conceptualized as competitive advantage). This linkage sheds light on the broader effects of ISD risk, and it helps ISD research overcome the isolation in which it is often conducted. Using the concept of residual risk (i.e., the risk present in the later stages of a project that remains after appropriate actions have been taken to mitigate initial risks in the early stages of a project), the authors propose that ISD risk impacts firm performance by reducing ISD success and that the value arising from ISD projects is higher when IT and business plans are synchronized (i.e., when they are in alignment).

Abstract:
A Policy on Geometric Design of Highways and Streets, 6th Edition, (publisher: AASHTO), provides design criteria for minimum sight distances, including intersection sight distance (ISD). An understanding of the relationship between ISD and safety at stop-controlled intersections is needed, with potential applications of this knowledge to both performance-based design and substantive road safety management practices. To establish this relationship, crash, traffic, and geometric data were collected from 832 two-lane minor unsignalized intersection approaches in Ohio, and Washington. The data were analyzed using a cross-sectional study design to quantify the relationship between safety and ISD. The analyses indicated that the expected number of target crashes are associated with available ISD. Target crash frequencies increase as available ISD decreases. Results suggest that ISD is associated with expected crash frequency in a non-linear fashion. The sensitivity of the expected number of target crashes to changes in ISD is highest when ISD is shorter, and decreases as ISD increases (i.e., the safety benefit of increasing ISD from 300 to 600 ft is substantially larger than the safety benefit of increasing ISD from 1,000 to 1,300 ft). The results also suggest that the impacts of ISD on crash frequencies vary as a function of the major road two-way annual average daily traffic and the major road speed limit. The sensitivity of the expected number of crashes to changes in ISD increases as both traffic volume and speed limit increase. Crash modification functions for each of the target crash types were estimated using the regression models.
