Abstract:
Research aims: This paper investigates whether Islamic windows have better stability than full-fledged Islamic banks.Design/Methodology/Approach: A sample of 14 Islamic banks and 19 Islamic windows banks in Indonesia from 2013 to 2018 was used in this study. Both ordinary least squares and panel fixed effects were employed to examine the stability of both Islamic banks’ types.Research findings: Our empirical result suggested that full-fledged Islamic banks were less stable than their Islamic windows counterparts. This result remained consistent after running the model with different estimators and conducting various robustness tests.Theoretical contribution/Originality: Our result implies that Islamic windows could enjoy their market position to maintain stability without converting themselves into full-fledged Islamic banks because the Islamic banking market's current condition is highly competitive.Practitioner/Policy implication: Our empirical evidence supports the Indonesian governments' policy in converting Islamic windows banks into full-fledged Islamic banks if the market's competitive condition is well monitored by the regulators.Research limitation/Implication: This research result is limited only to the Indonesian setting and can be different if the analysis is taken using a sample from other countries.

Abstract:
The article discusses a model of increasing the availability of financial services in the post-Soviet countries through the creation of Islamic windows that built into the structure of traditional financial organizations. This study does not discuss issues of Islamic law related to Islamic windows. The article is also not an introduction to Islamic banking. Instead, based on the evidence obtained mostly from Malaysia we show the evolution of the Islamic financial industry, one of the important stages of which was the launch of Islamic windows. We describe advantages and disadvantages of the Islamic window model, as well as the recent experience of other developing countries in adapting this model in their jurisdictions. The article aims to offer recommendations, including a system of strategic and operational decisions, for launching of Islamic windows, taking into account the innovative experience of Malaysia. In particular, a qualitative approach (literature review, content analysis, case studies, in-depth expert interviews) is used to identify problems and obstacles facing banking regulators and market participants in creating Islamic windows. The results of this study allowing to identify important details will be useful to participants and organizers of the Islamic financial market in the post-Soviet area. This study can also be used in the educational process as a reference material on Islamic financial practices that have developed in the world.

Abstract:

The study aims to compare the knowledge of and preference for the Islamic banking window and the full-fledged Islamic bank among Muslim customers. Data were collected from 1171 banking clients. Data were analyzed using descriptive analysis. The results show most Muslim customers do not know the difference between the full-fledged Islamic bank and the Islamic banking window. Yet, most Muslim customers favor the full-fledged Islamic bank to the Islamic windows since it is perceived to be more sharia compliant. Thus, the study theoretically contributes to Muslim banking behavior literature by providing empirical evidence on customer knowledge and preference in choosing an Islamic bank. Besides, the study provides knowledge to both the Islamic bank windows and full-fledged Islamic bank on the Muslim customers' understanding of both channels' availability.

Abstract:
In the second half of the nineteenth century, there was a growing interest in Western countries for Islamic stucco glass windows, which were known from descriptions in books and as imported artifacts. Among the oldest publications is Émile Prisse d’Avennes’ (1807-1879) L’art arabe d’après les monuments du Kaire depuis le VIIe siècle jusqu’à la fin du XVIIIe. One year after its publication in 1877, its illustrations inspired the geometrical patterns of the windows of the Moroccan House, a neo-Moorish pavilion in the park of Linderhof Palace (Ettal, Germany).

Abstract:
Windows of Faith provides a space where Muslim women speak forthemselves and challenge rigidly traditionalist voices that have often hadhegemonic status in Islamic jurisprudential works regarding women. It is avolume that represents the voices of some of the most highly regardedMuslim women scholars and activists today. The book appears to cater toa primarily academic audience, and one that is familiar with the tradition ofIslamic feminism. In her introduction, Gisela Webb describes the overall approach ofthe contributors as challenging hegemonic discourse in many circles. Itchallenges: elements within the Muslim and the non-Muslim imaginationthat define Muslim women as mute victims; western feminist patriarchytoward Muslim women; and also the Muslim cultural patriarchy thatappropriates the sources of Islamic law and praxis yet, in the view of(probably all of) these women, has abandoned the essential Divineegalitarian purposes. Windows of Faith is a refreshing read, especiallydue to today’s urgent need to respond to the Qur’anic challenge: Do theynot reflect? In the first part (Qur’anic/rheological Foundations) Amina Wadud’spiece “Alternative Qur’anic Interpretation and the Status of MuslimWomen” explores neo-traditionalist and secular approaches towardalternative interpretation of the Qur’an regarding the status of women. Itis interesting to examine her comment, “Being anti-Western has becomea basis for legitimacy in ‘Islam’ ” against some of Maysam al-Faruqi’scomments in her chapter, which seem to dichotomize “Islamicness” withwesternness in the context of gender relations. In the second chapter“Muslim Women’s Islamic Higher Learning as a Human Right,” NimatBarazangi seeks, through an analysis of qualitative research with Muslimwomen, to develop an “action plan for the Muslim woman” in the postmodemera, “to regain her identification with Islam.” The need of the houris to “reinstate woman as an educational agent, both at home and at themosque one who herself will outline her priorities as a trustee entrustedwith changing history toward social justice.” Will we see womenas weil as men delivering khutaba and instituting policies in mosques ...

Abstract:
Purpose The concept of Islamic banking (IB) as a discipline and the introduction of the full-fledged Islamic banks and Islamic windows are relatively newer developments in the banking sector in Oman. This paper aims to assess customers’ perceptions of the Islamic banks and IB windows in Oman. Design/methodology/approach Following the interpretive paradigm and an exploratory research design, data collected through personal interviews with a group of 60 respondents in two of the prominent cities in Oman were analysed qualitatively. Findings The study found that customers in Oman had mixed feelings about the Islamic Banks. While some of them were not sure if the banks follow the Islamic principles, a majority of them had not opened an account with the Islamic banks or Islamic windows. The study revealed some vulnerabilities in the areas of their operations, marketing practices, staff knowledge of products and customer-dealings, as well as customers’ understanding of Islamic banks, their principles and practices. Practical implications As the advent of IB is relatively new to Oman, the insights gained by this study will have wider implications for the growth of IB locally. The outcomes of this study would appraise the officials and regulators of Islamic banks and Islamic windows with customers’ perception of IB. The elimination of the identified weaknesses would help them to improve the knowledge, quality and the marketing and promotion of products and services while competing with the conventional banks. Originality/value This study is a pioneering effort to know the status of IB and customers’ motivations in Oman towards IB.

Abstract:
Little is known about when and where hybrid organizations diffuse. We argue that neo-institutional perspectives, which stress the constraining role of market categories and institutional logics, have to be complemented with demand-side perspectives that stress the enabling force of economic incentives to explain the origins of hybrids. We develop theory to predict the country-level diffusion of hybrid forms in Islamic banking in the 1975–2017 period, during which many conventional banks invaded the domain of Islamic banking by starting to sell Islamic banking services, or so-called “Islamic windows.” Our findings underscore the relevance of simultaneously studying the impact of constraining and enabling forces. Consistent with neo-institutional theory, we find strong evidence that a lack of constitutive legitimacy of the window form—only in countries where Muslims make up a large share of the population—and the ideological polarization of local audiences reify the ideological boundaries between the oppositional banking logics, which in turn hampers the diffusion of windows in the focal country. At the same time, however, it appears that the failure of local credit markets and country-level economic globalization, the latter even more in countries with a Muslim majority, provide potent economic incentives for the diffusion of windows. By stressing the role of utilitarian incentives and material exchange as drivers of hybridization, we bridge the gap between neo-institutional and more rationalist approaches of institutional change.

Abstract:
The purpose of this study is to investigate the efficiency of two different banking systems operating in Egypt (Islamic versus conventional banks). A sample of 35 banks has been used to examine the technical efficiency before and after the financial crisis using data envelopment analysis model. Evaluating the technical efficiency of Egyptian banks will enable policymakers to support which banking system is more efficient to facilitate the financial inclusion and enhance the economic development. Before the financial crisis, conventional banks outperformed conventional banks with Islamic windows and Islamic banks, scale technical efficiency outperformed pure technical efficiency when analyzing conventional banks and conventional banks with Islamic windows. In terms of Islamic banks, pure efficiency outperformed scale efficiency. After the financial crisis, technical efficiency of all banks decreased. However, pure technical efficiency of Islamic banks has improved as a result of the quality of management and outperformed both conventional banks and conventional banks with Islamic windows. These results imply that Islamic banks have not been affected by the financial crisis. Therefore, the increased adoption and support of the Islamic banks in Egypt is addressed to develop the economy and push forward entrepreneurship projects, support the financial inclusion and the informal economy integration.

Abstract:
Islamic finance products have become very common in financial transactions, and thus offer new business opportunities. The objective of our study was to investigate the effect of distributing Islamic banking products on the financial performance of commercial banks, over a period of seven years (2010–2017). We use a Correlation analysis to carry out the strength of the relationship between our dependent variable: bank performance variable: return on assets, and independent variables which are Islamic products. Studying the variables collected, we found evidence that there was a significant positive relationship between bank performance: return on asset and Murabaha, Mudaraba, although Ijara had a positive relationship with return on assets but not significant. We notice that all the available Islamic products in commercial banks used, had a positive significant relation with the exclusion of Ijara which had positive insignificant relationship. This implies that an increase in using Islamic banking products in commercial banks will lead to increase in conventional Banks performance.

Abstract:
This research paper aims to examine the relevance of asymmetric information to the two main financial contracts used by Islamic banks or conventional banks with Islamic windows, mudaraba and musharaka. We use theoretical proofs to explain how asymmetric information affects mudaraba and musharaka contract in terms of bank cost and yield and how to account for the adverse selection and moral hazard costs when calculating bank net profit or loss. We also provide suggestions supported by key modern theories including signalling, comparative advantage and incentives to resolve asymmetric information problems in the Islamic financial contracts. The research paper shows that asymmetric information is relevant to both mudaraba and musharaka contracts and directly affects Islamic banks and conventional banks with Islamic windows cost and yield. The paper also reveals that signalling and incentives are effective tools to deal with asymmetric information in Islamic financial contracts. Finally, the paper shows that Islamic finance providers need to opt for more secure financing, particularly with small borrowers.

Abstract:
This study was to assess the perception on the contribution of Islamic banks and Islamic windows towards the growth of the Nigerian economy. To document this, data were obtained through the use of structured questionnaires. 379 copies of questionnaires were administered based on the sample size obtained via the use of Taro Yamane formula. 367 questionnaires were successfully retrieved. Variables such as deposit activities, loan activities and perception of bank employees were also adopted as explanatory or independent variable and dependent variable respectively. To support the study hypothesis were also formulated. For the analysis, measures of central tendency (tables, frequency and percentages) and inferential statistics (Logit Regression) were used. The result revealed that the variables (i.e. deposit and loan activities) have a positive impact on the growth of Nigeria’s economy because the probability values of the variables (P=0.003 and 0.019) were less than alpha (α =0.05) level of significance. In other words, this implies that Islamic banks and windows have largely supported private consumption, business investments of its customers, aid government spending via sukuk to fund developmental projects of its customers. The study concludes that Islamic banks and windows have contributed towards the growth of the Nigeria’s economy. Furthermore, the study recommends that there is need for creating the necessary legal framework to ensure its smooth operations, intensify efforts on creating public awareness, rolling out more shariah compliant products that can take care of the peculiarities that exist in business environment and training and retraining of staff on effective Islamic banking.

Abstract:
Purpose – The purpose of this paper is to study earnings management practices of Islamic banks and conventional banks in the Middle East region. First, the authors examine factors that may influence Islamic banks managers' use of discretion in reporting loan loss provisions (LLP). Second, the authors investigate differences that may exist between Islamic banks and non-Islamic banks in terms of discretionary loan loss provisions (DLLP) used to manipulate accounting earnings. Design/methodology/approach – This empirical study uses an unbalanced panel data of 21 Islamic banks, 18 conventional banks with Islamic windows and 33 conventional banks, from seven Middle East countries during a period that ranges from 2000 to 2008. The authors use a two-stage approach in order to examine factors that may influence the use of discretion by Islamic banks' managers. Findings – The empirical results reveal that Islamic banks use DLLP for both earnings and capital management. External financing is also found to be a determinant of DLLP. Additional findings show no significant differences among Islamic banks, conventional banks with Islamic windows and conventional banks in using DLLP. These three groups of banks behave similarly in terms of discretion based on DLLP. Practical implications – The findings are potentially useful for regulators, auditors and investors. This study provides regulators with insights to strengthen their financial regulations in order to improve accounting quality. In addition, it helps auditors when considering the provisioning policies adopted by banks in order to detect specific manipulations of accounting earnings. The results may also help investors to focus on the impact of managerial discretion on accounting earnings for evaluation purposes. Originality/value – This study contributes to the literature on Islamic banking. On the one hand, it extends prior research by examining the discretionary component of LLP, instead of being restricted to total LLP. On the other hand, it compares the use of discretion among three groups of banks: full Islamic banks, conventional banks with Islamic windows and full conventional banks.

After centuries, these mechanisms have been effectively used by the banking sector, meeting the needs of the development of the world economy. An attempt is made to compare modern banking terminology with traditional concepts of Islamic banking. Historical examples of the use of Islamic instruments of financial and economic activity are given, as well as objective facts and figures that indicate the huge volumes of assets regulated by elements of Islamic banking in Islamic and Western countries. The special role of the so-called Islamic windows in numerous Western banks is noted.

Abstract:
This paper aims to investigate the relationship between the efficiency of banks in Egypt and capital adequacy ratios. We collected data on a sample of 40 banks comprising Islamic banks, conventional and conventional banks with Islamic windows pre and post the global financial crisis from year 2002 to 2015. We used data envelopment analysis liner programming (DEA) to calculate the efficiency of banks then we used a panel regression analysis through the application of Eviews software to investigate the relationship between the efficiency of banks and capital adequacy ratios. Pre the financial crisis, results, concluded that, there is a significant positive relationship between the efficiency of banks and capital adequacy ratios, credit risk, profitability, bank size and the quality of management. Whilst a significant negative relationship with the liquidity. The efficiency of conventional banks outperformed the efficiency of Islamic and conventional banks with Islamic windows. The increase in capital follows an increase in the level of risk borne by banks and increases capital adequacy ratios which leads to a rise in the loan portfolio and therefore, increase the level of loans provisions, which confirms the high level of efficiency for banks. Capital increase provide an additional protection against any additional risks. Post the financial crisis, the efficiency of banks has been affected especially for conventional banks. The efficiency of conventional and conventional banks with Islamic windows shows a negative significant relationship with capital adequacy ratios. The efficiency of Islamic banks outperformed other banks and shows a positive significant relationship with capital adequacy ratios. Results revealed that the efficiency of banks determines the level of capital and risk borne by banks.

Abstract:
This study aimed mainly at identifying the principles of governance in Islamic banks and measuring the extent to which these principles are applied in Islamic banks in Algeria, because what distinguishes Islamic banking is the existence of a Sharia supervisory board that looks at the activities and contracts that result from it. Islamic law as a reference for it in all items. Some countries, on top of them Malaysia, have established the Sharia advisory board at the level of the Central Bank of Malaysia, which is the authority empowered to verify the implementation of the provisions of Islamic law and its obligation in the work of Islamic banks Which represents the Sharia governance of Islamic banks. This research studies the extent to which the political administration provides the necessary infrastructure for the development of the emerging Islamic financial industry in Algeria in all fields, legal, sharia and Financial. Is it possible to establish a Sharia governance system with its controls and standards in the management of Islamic banks in Algeria, and to establish a central law for advisory and Sharia councils? And to what extent is the governance system considered and the extent of its effectiveness considered in Islamic banks, taking advantage of the Malaysian experience? Especially since Algerian Islamic banks do not have the confidence of civil society due to the absence of legitimate governance foundations in them.

Abstract:
The government has an important role in the welfare of the people's economy. One of them is through the role of the central bank by carrying out monetary policy. This policy was adopted by the central bank or Bank Indonesia (BI) through several instruments, including through regulating discount rates for commercial banks. In this case, BI sets the inflation target as a reference for determining interest rates. When the inflation rate exceeds the targeted, BI will raise interest rates which in turn will reduce the credit issued by commercial banks to the public, because commercial banks must pay higher interest rates to the central bank. And the results of the analysis that the interest rate charged in the credit (Lending Facility) discount facility is classified as an act of usury. Meanwhile, the profits obtained from the deposit of funds in the Facility Deposit transaction are not permitted in the Islamic economy, because in the Islamic economy there is no interest rate but profit sharing, given the fixed and concrete interest rates. In addition, the discount facility is also incompatible with some Islamic economic principles, including; the principle of Illahiyah, Justice, and the government.

Abstract:
Abstract Islamic banking is highly specific and is based on the Sharia law. This banking offers new products. which comply with the prohibitions of riba, maysir, gharar. Dynamic development of this banking in the word is the consequence of its opening to culturally diverse clients, and not only Muslims. Numerous researches demonstrate that many not-Muslim clients use the financial products which are offered in Islamic banks and in the “Islamic windows” in conventional banks. The Islamic banking offer is increasingly more often dedicated to the clients beyond the Muslim community, and at the same time the products dedicated to this community are offered by traditional banks. In this way the Islamic banking offer diffuses to other cultures.

This study analyzes the risk-taking behavior of Indonesian Islamic Banks by examining whether the relation between financing Growth rate and non-performing financing (NPF). We employ threshold regression models and bank-level data of 24 Islamic banks (full-fledged Islamic banks and Islamic banking windows) covering the period from 2009 to 2019. We find evidence for the excessive risk-taking of Islamic Banks. More specifically, while the relation between NPF and FGR is negative when the one-lagged NPF is below the threshold (estimated to be 5.42%), it turns positive once it is above the threshold. This means that banks with NPF above the 5.42 percent threshold tend to take risky loans.

Abstract:
Purpose The purpose of this paper is to examine empirically the efficiency types of Islamic and conventional banks. It seeks to show whether the efficiency level of conventional and Islamic banks significantly differs from each other. In addition, it investigates the influential factors on each type of efficiency. Design/methodology/approach The paper utilises the data envelopment analysis in its windows version to estimate the efficiency scores reflecting the time variance and compares between banking models. The paper uses pure technical efficiency (TE) and scale efficiency to achieve the objective of the study. In addition, the panel data technique is adopted to assess the determinants of the efficiency of the banks econometrically. Findings The findings of panel regression initially indicate that the pure TE is higher for conventional banks compared to Islamic banks. However, the Islamic banks are more scale efficient than their conventional counterpart. Macro and micro indicators have different impacts on the both types of efficiency. However, the unique factors that show consistent influence on the efficiency types were loans/finance, non-interest income/finance/liquidity and GDP. Furthermore, the determinants are shaped differently for Islamic and conventional banks when the banking model is controlled for. Originality/value This paper examines the efficiency types using a unique window analysis approach to examine the types of efficiency with a longitudinal set of data from 1996 to 2011.

Abstract:
Purpose – This paper aims to draw on the bank rent approach to evaluate the existing pattern of financing of Islamic banks and to propose a fairly new conceptualization of Islamic bank rent. Design/methodology/approach – The bank rent theory is adopted to generate the theoretical underpinnings of the issue. After that, empirical evidence from the banking sector of Bangladesh is used to support the arguments. Findings – Repeated transactions under murabaha are observed in the Islamic banking sector of Bangladesh. The asset-based financing gives the Bangladeshi Islamic banks relatively higher Islamic bank rent opportunity for protecting their “franchise value” as Shari’ah-compliant lenders, while responding to the periodic volatility in transaction costs of profit-and-loss sharing. Research limitations/implications – The bank rent approach suggests that the murabaha syndrome can be ironically justifiable. On the other hand, the current profit-and-loss sharing risk provides an idea of the difficulty in assuming the participatory financing with higher credit risk in practice. Islamic scholars and the regulatory authority need to design an appropriate financial architecture which can create different levels of rent opportunities for Islamic banks to avail the benefit from the variety of Islamic financing as declared by Islamic Shari’ah. Originality/value – This paper introduces a fairly new concept of “Islamic bank rent” to make sense of the murabaha syndrome. This approach also contributes to clarifying the unique risk and cost to be compensated with the spreads that Islamic banks are expected to earn. To draw empirical evidence, as far as it could be ascertained, the data of both Islamic banks and conventional banks with Islamic banking windows/branches are used for the first time.

Abstract The development of Islamic finance, their crisis-resistance and possibilities for using experience of this sector in conventional banking industry are being subject of studies in many countries, also non-Muslim ones. In this paper the author presented the analysis of Islamic finance development and its determinants basing on examples from Europe. Such banks and investment funds have a growing share in European markets, which is confirmed by the latest EY’s data. Main obstacles to Islamic finance development include, among others: incompatibility of legal regulations in non-Muslim countries, low demand among Islamic diaspora in Europe, shortage of qualified Sharia scholars, unsatisfactory standardization of Islamic financial products and accounting policies. International Islamic finance institutions (incl. AAOIFI and IFSB) play a significant part in overcoming them. Particularly beneficial legislative changes were introduced in Luxembourg, Germany, Russia and in the United Kingdom. Emerging of other Islamic banks, increase in number of Islamic windows in traditional banks and further development of Islamic investment funds in Europe are to be expected.
