Abstract:
Background: Little is known regarding health outcomes associated with isolated systolic hypertension (ISH), isolated diastolic hypertension (IDH), or systolic and diastolic hypertension (SDH) among young adults with stage 1 hypertension, defined using the 2017 American College of Cardiology/American Heart Association blood pressure (BP) guideline. Methods: From a nationwide health screening database, we included 6 424 090 participants, aged 20 to 39 years, who were not taking antihypertensive medication at the baseline examination in 2003 to 2007. Participants were categorized as having normal BP (untreated systolic BP [SBP] <120/diastolic BP [DBP] <80 mm Hg; n=2 665 310); elevated BP (SBP 120–129/DBP <80 mm Hg; n=705 344); stage 1 IDH (SBP <130/DBP 80–89 mm Hg; n=1 271 505); stage 1 ISH (SBP 130–139/DBP <80 mm Hg; n=255 588); stage 1 SDH (SBP 130–139/DBP 80–89 mm Hg; n=711 503); and stage 2 hypertension (SBP ≥140, DBP ≥90 mm Hg; n=814 840). The primary outcome was composite cardiovascular disease (CVD) events, including myocardial infarction, stroke, heart failure, and CVD-related death. Results: The median age of the participants was 30 years and 60.9% were male. Over a median follow-up of 13.2 years, 44 070 new CVD events occurred. With normal BP as the reference, multivariable-adjusted hazard ratios (95% CIs) for CVD events were 1.14 (1.09–1.18) for elevated BP, 1.32 (1.28–1.36) for stage 1 IDH, 1.36 (1.29–1.43) for stage 1 ISH, 1.67 (1.61–1.72) for stage 1 SDH, and 2.40 (2.33–2.47) for stage 2 hypertension. Conclusions: Among young adults, stage 1 ISH, IDH, and SDH were all associated with higher CVD risks than normal BP. The CVD risks of stage 1 ISH and IDH were similar to each other but lower than the risk of stage 1 SDH. Categorizing young adults with stage 1 hypertension further into stage 1 ISH, IDH, and SDH may improve risk stratification for identifying high-risk individuals.

Abstract:
Sub-indexes were constructed for bulls of the Holstein breed according to groups of production traits – production index for milk (IPH), sub-indexes for reproduction (IRH), longevity (IDH), health resistance (IOH) and fitness (IFH). Every index for selection for a group of traits applies all available information – breeding values for traits of milk performance, fertility and linear type trait classification. The sub-indexes were compared with the total index (SIH). The accuracy of total selection index (SIH) was 69.30%, the accuracies of the other indexes were as follows: IPH 83.32%, IRH 56.04%, IDH 9.80%, IOH 15.57% and IFH 9.86%. All of the indexes were standardised to have the mean 100 and standard deviation 12. Simplified index ZSIH was developed as a sum of IPH, IRH and IDH; its correlation with the total index is r = 0.992. If IPH is used, the values of secondary functional traits decrease. The use of IDH, IOH and IFH results in a decrease in milk performance. Selection differences, i.e. changes in breeding values at various intensities of selection according to some indexes and breeding values for kg of milk and kg of milk proteins, were tested on the basis of breeding values in a sample of the domestic population of bulls. The production index was compared with production indexes used in other countries. Correlations between production indexes were higher than r = 0.790.

Puniyani, Kriti. "Spatiotemporal Gene Networks from ISH Images." Research Showcase @ CMU, 2013. http://repository.cmu.edu/dissertations/338.

Full text
Abstract:
As large-scale techniques for studying and measuring gene expressions have been developed, automatically inferring gene interaction networks from expression data has emerged as a popular technique to advance our understanding of cellular systems. Accurate prediction of gene interactions, especially in multicellular organisms such as Drosophila or humans, requires temporal and spatial analysis of gene expressions, which is not easily obtainable from microarray data. New image based techniques using in-sit hybridization(ISH) have recently been developed to allowlarge-scale spatial-temporal profiling of whole body mRNA expression. However, analysis of such data for discovering new gene interactions still remains an open challenge. This thesis studies the question of predicting gene interaction networks from ISH data in three parts. First, we present SPEX2, a computer vision pipeline to extract informative features from ISH data. Next, we present an algorithm, GINI, for learning spatial gene interaction networks from embryonic ISH images at a single time step. GINI combines multi-instance kernels with recent work in learning sparse undirected graphical models to predict interactions between genes. Finally, we propose NP-MuScL (nonparanormal multi source learning) to estimate a gene interaction network that is consistent with multiple sources of data, having the same underlying relationships between the nodes. NP-MuScL casts the network estimation problem as estimating the structure of a sparse undirected graphical model. We use the semiparametric Gaussian copula to model the distribution of the different data sources, with the different copulas sharing the same covariance matrix, and show how to estimate such a model in the high dimensional scenario. We apply our algorithms on more than 100,000 Drosophila embryonic ISH images from the Berkeley Drosophila Genome Project. Each of the 6 time steps in Drosophila embryonic development is treated as a separate data source. With spatial gene interactions predicted via GINI, and temporal predictions combined via NP-MuScL, we are finally able to predict spatiotemporal gene networks from these images.

Lai, Dominic. "Compliant(ish) : norm evasion and avoidance in doping, tax, and Indigenous rights." Thesis, University of British Columbia, 2016. http://hdl.handle.net/2429/59082.

Full text
Abstract:
Norms literature assume that opponents of norms do not comply with its prescriptions, and will actively reject its’ logic patterns. While this may describe some patterns of norm contestation, actors that openly contest generally accepted norms may incur unbearable penalties. Other theories presume that a state may accept a norm’s logic patterns, but not comply as a result of an inability to comply. Evasion and avoidance present a different way of envisioning how actors may approach norms, compliance, and logic systems by delinking compliance and acceptance of normative logic. These concepts introduce opportunism as a key variable that also challenges presumptions about actor intentions. By examining the cases of doping in sport, tax law, and Indigenous rights, a pattern emerges where actors have been able to manipulate a norm’s compliance signals to technically comply with a norm while defeating the norm’s objectives. In turn, this allows actors to enjoy the benefits of non-compliance or partial compliance and compliance simultaneously, and escape detection by appearing to be compliant with the norm itself. These two concepts implicitly challenge the concept that compliance is a binary variable, and builds on a growing literature that suggests that the grey area between the poles of compliance and non-compliance may be more complex than expected.

Amos, Pauline. "Self(ish)-fusion thinking and practice : a (mainly) visual investigation of poly-modal art-making." Thesis, University of Plymouth, 2004. http://hdl.handle.net/10026.1/2637.

Full text
Abstract:
If it could be seen that a 'body of training' has a crucial impact on a creative practice, my own history of 'training' would be difficult to trace within any specific discipline or mode of self-expression. I have been 'trained' as a visual artist, actor, performance-artist, and to some extent, musician/sonic performer. This coexistence of modalities with associated meta-praxis, has in fact created a set of parallel dimensions embodied within a collective of theories as well as practices. On the one hand, this collective of practices has involved a view of myself (and what I make) as a form of 'research object'. But on another hand, the very intersection between these modes of practice has inevitably involved a form of experimentation and enquiry that has stretched far beyond the boundaries of 'self '. Not only have these diverse practices 'informed' each other, but the fusion of these modalities has created a set of research questions that interrogate the validity of self (and self-practice) as a form of research outcome. Consequently, at a key stage of my research, I decided to 'pull focus' on particular disciplinary modes and practices in order to best define my practice and its context within notions of defining a 'self. This is why the bulk of my practical submission has taken the form of a selected series of mainly large-scale works on paper. At an earlier stage, my visual work was equally disposed of representational (figurative) and non-representational outcomes. However, notions (and questions) of 'self are capable of presentation in the abstract domain of signs, symbols and 'signals', I chose to represent questions about intuition, emotion, spontaneity and improvisation via the submission of a series of entirely abstract work. In many if not all cases, the process of execution is as important as the outcome. To this end, where appropriate, I have also chosen to represent 'process' by means of:- • Reproductions (where appropriate) of sketches and preparatory notations in the form of image, text, video and other forms of documentation, from time to time; • Installed performance experiments of either a personal or collaborative nature (the latter normally being in the form of collaborations between myself and other visual artists or musicians) and represented by means of edited parts from video documentation; • Sonic experiments and collaborations between myself in the role of musician, and other musicians (CD submission). However, and most importantly, the arrangement and ordering of the completed works on paper is also intended to represent a documentation of a process where notions of 'completion', via a series, can be seen as evidence of the nature of a continuous and gradually unfolding process of experimentation and 'testing'. In other words, the entire body of completed works on paper should be seen as an holistic exercise in questioning the position of my own body (and practice) as illuminating the position of my mind and senses within an evolving set of works. The written thesis follows this same 'chain' format. It is constructed in the form of a textual continuum that both spans and links several theoretical and practical discourses. In each case (with the exception of the introduction and conclusion), I have sought to analyse, evaluate, document and criticise the sources, processes and outcomes of each work. I have also taken the view that the series of works beg questions of generic relationships. There is an obvious diversity of 'idea' but in the main, the paintings/drawings are represented by a relatively heterogeneous set of stylistic practices. These heterogeneous elements emerged as a result of a highly personalised journey of exploration. At no point have I taken the view that theoretical contexts (those derived more usually from an historical analysis of past and current trends), will be the determining core of either my practice or my research with and into that practice. The written thesis charts a progression of a body of work that has been practice-led. In so-doing, it also connects several modes of creative self-expression together; most notably, music, theatre and visual-performance. Consequently, and because I believe the process of working to be as significant (if not more so) as the outcomes. The written thesis is both a 'history' and a critique of that journey. All my practice is 'primed' by different approaches to research. The written thesis embodies the three stages that articulate the sequencing of my practice, namely; • Source-research-memory-theory-experience; • Practice-improvisation- visual experimentation; • Review and notions of progression/linkage between one state (and stage) of practice and another. The introduction is concerned with the contextualisation of my practice and descriptions of the 'ordering' and determinants for making work. The conclusion concerns itself with the analysis and debriefing that accrues from a body of completed work. But I have also concluded by drawing attention to a poly-modal approach to practice, one that encompasses a 'collective' of techniques and artistic languages, across and between one mode of self-expression and another.

Madubela, Ndumiso S. "Eish - when to use -ish-: a study in the verbalization of English lexical items in spoken Xhosa." Master's thesis, Faculty of Humanities, 2021. http://hdl.handle.net/11427/33160.

Full text
Abstract:
This study examines how Xhosa speakers incorporate verbs of English origin into their lexicons with a specific focus on the -ish- suffix. The study deals with historical treatments of this phenomenon and debates its relevance and applicability to current scholarship on lexical borrowing. To ensure a wide range of data sources I used a corpus derived from interviews with 30 Xhosa speakers in Cape Town, as well as from three media sources: the first is a 1-hour long talk radio programme transcribed from the national Xhosa broadcaster, UMhlobo weNene, the second an interview with a Xhosa-speaking patient on the television programme, Siyayinqoba Beat It. The third is from social media, (Facebook, Twitter and WhatsApp). The demographics of participants in this study are predominantly urban dwellers. The youngest participant (from the surveys) was 16 years old and the oldest participant was 45 years old. I say “predominantly” as it was not possible to obtain specific background data to the two Xhosa speakers on radio and television. Very little work has been done on the way in which African languages speakers grammaticalize verbs of English origin – why, for example, do some adopted words like suffix -a (e.g. Ndiyamotivate-a – ‘I am motivating') while others suffix -ish-a (e.g. Ndiyastudy-ish-a – ‘I am studying'). The main finding of the study is that speakers incorporated verbs of English origin by suffixing -a and -ish- in their speech, they were not consciously code mixing: rather, they used these suffixes as just another resource available to them to make their communication more strategic. This could indicate that in certain urban settings the -ish- verbalizing suffix might become even more popular as people need to negotiate lifestyles that require new lexicons. It is hoped that this research will shed more light on this growing phenomenon and provide a framework for discussion of verbalizers within the greater canon of language change scholarship in South Africa as a whole. A primary function of this study was to formulate rules for the adoption of -ish- and -a and to provide statistical data as to which one is preferred by speakers.

Abstract:

Leadership has entered an age of chronic unrest. Scholars have emphasized the impact of healthy and effective leaders on organizations (Crother-Laurin, 2006), yet recent studies reveal high stress and burnout in the contemporary workplace (Walsh, 2005, 2013). The academy faces their own organizational challenges, (Archibald & Feldman, 2010) calling into question the health and effectiveness of leaders, especially at the presidential level (Duderstadt, 2010). While the study of college president wellness has been explored through multiple lenses (McNair, Duree, & Ebbers, 2011; Tekniepe, 2014; Walker & McPhail, 2009), some researchers highlight the unique needs of mid-career presidents of private institutions. To date, minimal research has been conducted on wellness for this population. Using the presidential office as the pivotal point of inquiry, this qualitative interpretive constructivist study sought to answer the following research questions: RQ1: How do mid-career college presidents perceive personal wellness? • RQ1a: What value does wellness play in the lives of mid-career presidents? • RQ1b: How do mid-career college presidents apply wellness techniques in their lives? • RQ1c: Have these wellness practices changed throughout their time as president?

Interviews with (N = 10) mid-career private college presidents were conducted, as well as an (N = 1) elite interview with an executive coach. These data were analyzed using Giorgi’s (2009) analytical strategy. Interview observation data and document analyses of various institutional documents (websites and presidential social media) supplemented the data set. Boyatzis’ (1998) data analysis strategy was applied to observation and document data. Hettler’s (1976) six dimensions of wellness were used to guide study design, develop instrumentation, and contextualize the definition of wellness used in this study. Five themes emerged from this study: mid-career college presidents identified the continuous challenges of their position, transitional issues and the need to mitigate stressors, their conscious acknowledgement of wellness, their need for social connections and family, and their efforts to pursue personal wellness in a taxing environment. These findings highlight the complexities of the mid-career college president’s quest for personal wellness. This study may assist academic leaders and board members with the knowledge to develop programs and resources for presidents, supporting wellness for future leaders.

Full text
Abstract:
A cryptic haplosporidian parasite was detected infecting rock oysters from the Montebello Islands in north-western Australia using a PCR targeting the parasite’s small ribosomal subunit gene. The PCR products were cloned and sequenced along with the remaining sections of the parasite’s SSU rRNA gene. Phylogenetic analysis of the sequence generated indicated a Minchinia species (Haplosporidia). The SSU sequence generated was used to develop two in situ hybridisation assays to visualise the parasite in H/E sections as well as a PCR assay to detect the parasite. The molecular assays were assessed for specificity and sensitivity and were then used to compare the parasite to previous haplosporidian parasite infections of pearl oysters. Both assays produced positive results from the infected pearl oysters but not from other closely related haplosporidian species. An SEM and TEM electron microscopy analysis was performed on spores from both parasite species. The spores of the pearl oyster parasite had two spore wall filaments wound around the spore originating for a posterior thickening while the spores of the rock oyster parasite were covered in microtubule-like structures. These data suggests pearl oysters where co-infected with both the Haplosporidium sp. and the Minchinia sp. detected in rock oysters. No evidence of a posterior thickening could be found on the spores of the rock oyster parasite. Attempts to detect the parasite at the previous geographic sites of its detection in pearl oysters resulted in detection of the Minchinia species in tropical oysters in the Kimberley region of Western Australia by in-situ hybridisation.
