Abstract:

Abstract:

Valuable minerals that are used in various aspects of everyday life are buried in fossilised storages below the ground in the earth's crust. These minerals are mined as rocks which then have to be crushed in order to liberate these minerals of value. The liberated valuable minerals have to be winnowed from the rock powder. Flotation is the main process which is used in mineral processing to recover valuable minerals. This process uses the differences in surface properties of particles to separate hydrophobic particles from hydrophilic ones. The strong relationship between the method of crushing the rocks and the amount of valuable minerals which can be reclaimed from the crushed rock has long been realized in mineral processing. The type of mineral, the size to which the rock must be reduced to and the amount of energy needed for this size reduction are among the most important factors which guide the decision on the type of device to be used in pulverising mineral rocks. Physical properties, with the exception of particle size, of mill products have not been investigated as thoroughly as the chemical properties. Physical properties include surface roughness and particle shape. The differences in shape, between particles produced by different mills, with respect to these properties, have been attributed to differences in the breakage mechanisms in the mills used to grind the particles. There is contradicting literature on the breakage mechanisms that dominate in various mills. This confusion is exacerbated by the fact that different breakage mechanisms occur simultaneously in any one mill. The definition and determination of particle shape are also difficult. Subsequently, the effect of particle shape on flotation is a subject that is rife with contradictions which add to the complexity of the subject.

Comminution involves crushing and grinding operations. The grinding operations use the traditional tumbling mills and stirred mills to reduce the ore to the required fineness. This thesis intends to investigate the influence of design and operating variables on the IsaMillTM specific energy and product size, when grinding UG2 platinum-bearing ore. The main objectives of this work were to study the effects of operating variables on specific energy consumption and product fineness, and to investigate IsaMillTM scale-up protocol. The experimental studies were conducted using the M4 IsaMillTM on a laboratory scale and the M10 000 IsaMillTM on an industrial scale.

Sustainability in the mineral processing industry is guaranteed by the efficient operation of unit processes to maximize profitability within the prevailing economic conditions at the time. Efficient operation can be measured based on cost, metallurgical and energy efficiency of the operation or as a combination of the three, with energy efficiency becoming increasingly more important in the world and current South African context even more so. With ore bodies becoming more complex and finely disseminated the need for ultra fine grinding to maximise mineral recoveries in PGM concentrating operations by means of mainstream grinding has become more important. Conventional grinding technology was found to be inefficient to address this challenge. Introduction of new stirred milling technology for mainstream grinding using ceramic media successfully addressed the challenge posed by finely disseminated and complex PGM ore bodies. Introduction of new technology also brings about optimisation opportunities on various levels to ensure that the new technology is performing optimally in order to maximise profitability. As relatively new technology, several potential optimisation areas for the horizontal stirred mill has been identified for study. Operating costs for IsaMills™ horizontal mills can be classified into 3 groups i.e. media, maintenance and energy cost. Ceramic media type used can potentially play a role in determining the cost contribution of each of these groups to the overall mill operating costs. An area found very important to study, taking into consideration the enormous strain on the South African electricity supply system, was the impact of ceramic media properties on the energy efficiency of the horizontal stirred mill.

Abstract:
IsaMill is a stirred type mill used in mineral industry for fine and ultra-fine grinding. The difficulty in obtaining the internal flow information in the mill by experimental techniques has prevented the development of the fundamental understanding of the flow and generating general methods for reliable scale-up and optimized design and control parameters. This difficulty can be effectively overcome by numerical simulation based on discrete element method (DEM). In this work a DEM model was developed to study particle flow in a simplified IsaMill. The DEM model was validated by comparing the simulated results of the flow pattern, mixing pattern and power draw with those measured from a same scale lab mill. Spatial distributions of microdynamic variables related to flow and force structure such as local porosity, particle interaction forces, collision velocity and collision frequency have been analyzed. Among the materials properties of particles, it is shown that by decreasing particle/particle sliding friction coefficient, the particle flow becomes more vigorous which is useful to grinding performance. Restitution coefficient does not affect the particle flow significantly. A too low or too high particle density could decrease grinding efficiency. Although grinding medium size affects the flow, its selection may depend on the particle size of the products. Among the operational variables considered, the results show that fill volume and mill speed proved to be important factors in IsaMil process. Increase of fill volume or mill speed increases the interaction between particles and agitating discs which results in a more vigorous motion of the particles. Among the mill properties, particle/stirrer sliding friction plays a major role in energy transfer from stirrer to particles. Although there exists a minimum collision energy as particle/stirrer sliding friction increases, large particle/stirrer sliding friction may improve grinding performance as it has both large collision frequency and collision energy. However, that improvement is only up to a critical particle/disc sliding friction beyond which only input energy increases with little improvement on collision frequency and collision energy. Reducing the distance between stirrers or increasing the size of disc holes improves high energy transfer from discs to particles, leading to high collision frequency and collision energy. Among the different stirrer types, the energy transfer is more effective when disc holes are present. Pin stirrer shows increased collision energy and collision frequency which also result in a high power draw. Using the DEM results, a wear model has been developed to predict the wear pattern of the discs. This model can be used to predict the evolution of the disc wear with the time. It is shown that energy transfer from discs to particles are increased when discs are worn out. An attempt has also been made to analyze the microdynamic properties of the mill for different sizes. It is shown that specific power consumption and impact energy are correlated regardless of the mill size and mill speed.

Gunda, Ronald. "Use of temperature for diagnosing mixing in the IsaMill." Thesis, 2014. http://hdl.handle.net/10539/15366.

Abstract:
The IsaMill is a recently developed process equipment , first commissioned on a large scale in the early 90s in an effort to help recover values from old mine dumps due to improvements in downstream extraction technologies which could further recover values from ores with fine particles, a technology which was not available before. Also due to depletion of easy-to-extract ores and prevalence of fine grained ores which cannot be economically liberated using the traditional mills like ball mills , there was need to develop a mill that could grind ore to sizes of the order of less than 20 micrometres; hence the evolution of the Isamill. As this is a recent technology, limited research has been done to fully characterise this mill, important to mineral processing economics as it is Milling efficiency and operation of the plant can be improved if the degree of mixing in the mill can be reduced as that reduces overgrinding or under grinding. A clearer understanding of the mill dynamics will help in coming up with better understanding of mill operations which will assist in developing better mill design and control philosophies. An M4 pilot IsaMill with overall length 393mm and internal diameter 135mm was used for the test work. Temperature measurements were used to identify the mixing process in the mill. Ten resistance temperature devices (RTDs) were inserted along the length of the mill from feed to discharge. Holes were drilled on the mill shell and insulated copper conductors were glued into the holes. The copper conductors had drilled holes into which the RTDs were inserted to pick the heat transferred by the copper from the mill. A 16-channel data logger was used to convert the measured temperatures into an analogue temperature signal that was displayed on a personal computer. The following process parameters were varied during the test runs to observe their effect on the resulting temperature profile along the length of the mill from feed to discharge: (i)Slurry flow rate (2 -3l/min). (ii)Mill tip speed (1 500rpm- 2 000rpm). (iii)Media load (1.5-2.5l). A platinum ore, UG2, from Amandebult in South Africa was used for the test work at Anglo American Technical Solutions. A feed with F80 = 88μm was used for the tests. The characteristic temperature profile from the feed point to the mill discharge indicated overall plug flow behaviour with some axial mixing superimposed on the plug flow behaviour. The recirculating media and coarse particles at feed point caused a step change in temperature of the slurry as it enters the mill. The greatest temperature change within the mill was observed to occur at the first compartment of the mill. A predictive model was developed (through use of mass and energy balances) to correlate the mill variables, tip speed, feed flow rate and media load with the resulting mill temperatures. The mixing coefficients of the mill were calculated. The model can predict the degree of mixing in the mill and could be used to predict the temperature profile along the length of the mill as well, given any combination of the above three mill variables. It has been shown that use of temperature data acquisition systems has potential to improve control and monitoring of the IsaMill both operationally and from a maintenance point of view as the condition of the mill can be monitored without actually having to stop the mill but by looking at variations from the signature temperature profile.

The Meiji Restoration was a turbulent era yet full of outstanding heroes. It was said that heroes were created by the trend of times. However, during the end of the Tokugawa Shogunate Era, not only the Samurais but also the master-less-samurais, wealthy farmers, and merchants participated actively in organizing a " Somo group" at this historical moment. This group was formed mostly by local civilians . Some of them chose to join the new government to fight in the Boshin War, and some of them chose to remain with the Tokugawa Shogunate. The past studies of Meiji Restoration mainly focused on the Tokugawa Shogunate and domains, or the battle between the Imperial and the Tokugawa Shogunate. Recently, some of the studies had switched the focus to the activities of the plebs. Nevertheless, these studies still tended to concentrate on fields of groups and people who were anti-Tokugawa Shogunate. On the other hand, the portion of the Tokugawa Shogunate's supporters were almost overlooked. The author had tired to discuss and analyze, via historial documents, the commissioner of the Shinsengumi, Kondo Isami, a Somo-Shishi(loyalist). This essay was consisted of 5 chapters and 17 sections. It first explained the motivation of study, reviewed other related studies, and then explain the methods used and the essay structure. In addition, the essay noted the politic background at the end of Tokugawa Shogunate. Through out Kondo Isami’s political activities, the essay tried to specify why Kondo Isami, an non-samurai, showed up in this historical stage and the reasons that he supported the Tokugawa Shogunate. In the analyzing process, the Author classified Kondo Isami into the Somo-Shishi category. He was in the center of the political society . Kondo Isami had the same ideal of Sonnojoi (Revere the Emperor and Expel the Barbarians) as the other Somo-Shishi. The author realized that Kondo Isami’s behavior , however, was differed from the other Somo-Shishi. This difference was not caused by the ideology of Sonnojoi, but was mainly due to Kondo Isami’s characteristics and political judgment.

Abstract:
The diploma thesis deals with the circumstances of origin of the terrorist organization Islamic State in its theoretical part. It focuses on the religious context of the ideology of the Islamic state and the origins of the organization. The so-called Islamic State can currently be considered one of the most acute security threats of the 21st century. The war with the so- called Islamic State is also a media war, a war taking place in the media and global cyberspace. An important mean of this war is propaganda. The work is also focused mainly on the propaganda of the so-called Islamic State with a focus on video production. With the influx of brutal videos from IS production, the question arises which way media should handle this material. Obviously, the videos were designed for media, among others. To be distributed and viewed by as many recipients as possible. In the practical part selected videos from the IS production are analyzed and their example shows what topics are present in IS video production and how the Islamic State propaganda works with the video.
