Abstract:
AbstractArising out of the observation of the seemingly insignificant status of Isaac in the ancestral narrative of Genesis xii-xxxvi, this study explores the role and function of Isaac in Genesis. Two contrastive readings are applied to the Isaac material: one synchronic focussing on the characterisation of Isaac in those episodes in which he appears in the narrative; and a diachronic analysis focussing on the extant Isaac traditions in Genesis xxvi. Both readings support a subordination of Isaac to Abraham, but differ in their understanding of how this subordination takes place. Both readings agree that the outcome of the subordination of Isaac is the transfer of the promises to Isaac, thus providing the basis for the promises to continue into subsequent generations. In becoming the recipient of the promises, Isaac becomes the crucial, proto-typical link between Abraham and the future generations of Israel.

Full text
Abstract:
CACTA is an En/Spm transposon superfamily present in high copy number in plant genomes, and Isaac is a subfamily of the CACTA superfamily. The TIR sequence of the Isaac subfamily was used for the purpose of transposon display (TD) in maize and sorghum. The Isaac TD produced 50–80 amplified fragments, depending on the primer combination, and the amplification profile was highly polymorphic among maize inbred lines. Isaac TD-based phylogenetic clustering distinguished the maize inbred lines according to their lineages and was consistent with the results of phylogenetic reports derived from other marker techniques by others researchers. The Isaac TD profile proved to be highly reproducible with different brands of Taq DNA polymerases and thermocyclers. The Isaac TD was also applied to recombinant inbred lines to assess genetic segregation; we observed 40–50 recordable segregation markers, depending on the primer combination. These Isaac TD markers segregated mostly as dominant markers, although, in a few cases, non-parental bands were observed in the segregating populations. In addition, the Isaac TD was very successful in the amplification of sorghum accessions. Therefore, the Isaac TD may provide another useful protocol for genetic analysis in maize and sorghum.Key words: CACTA, Isaac, transposon display, maize, sorghum.

Abstract:
Background: The Global Asthma Network (GAN) builds on the International Study of Asthma and Allergies in Childhood (ISAAC). Objective: To compare asthma prevalence time trends in primary and secondary school children in four Mexican centers participating in ISAAC and GAN. Methods: GAN is a cross-sectional, multicenter, epidemiological methodology carried out in groups of primary school children aged 6–7 and adolescents aged 13–14 following the ISAAC Phase Three protocol, with additional questions on risk factors and asthma management. Results: Overall, the prevalence of asthma symptoms and diagnosis in primary school children was higher in males than in females both in ISAAC (p < 0.05) and in GAN (p < 0.01), while adolescent females had a higher prevalence, also both in ISAAC (p < 0.001) and in GAN (p < 0.001). Conclusion: The prevalence of asthma and its symptoms has increased from ISAAC Phase Three since 2003 to GAN Phase I in Mexico in 2019. These findings are in line with the increases observed in the centers with low asthma baseline prevalence in ISAAC Phase One in comparison with ISAAC Phase Three.

Abstract:
Can the story of Isaac be read with tragedy in mind or is the second patriarch the comedic relief of Genesis? Scholars mostly see Isaac as the book’s fool and thus laughable. Even more clearly so in Gen 26:7-11 which recounts how, during the hunger migration of Isaac and Rebekah to Philistine Gerar, Isaac presented Rebekah as his sister. Comparing Genesis 26 with similar stories about Abraham and Sarah (Genesis 12, 20), Isaac and Rebekah are in lesser danger than Isaac’s parents. This work takes three steps to argue that the story supports the national identity of displaced Israelites. First, I argue that the wife-sister scene isn’t necessarily less frightening than the other wife-sister scenes in Genesis 12 and Genesis 20. Second, I don’t consider the whole Isaac cycle. The reason is that unlike others who try to understand the character of Isaac, as it comes out from Genesis 17-35, I care for the wife-sister motif as a device to engage with fears around immigration. Third, and most untraditionally, I use modern social psychology research on modern societies to speculate about the effect of the story on its original readership.
