Philo, Greg. "News content and audience belief : a case study of the 1984/5 miners strike." Thesis, University of Glasgow, 1989. http://theses.gla.ac.uk/2501/.

Full text
Abstract:
This study examines the reception of news messages by audiences, with special reference to coverage of the 1984/5 miner's strike. A new methodology is employed, which used groups of people selected to highlight possible differences in the reception of messages. Some groups had a special knowledge of the events of the strike, while a more general sample included people from different occupations and regional areas. The groups were invited to write and texts of their own television news programmes using actual photographs from news reports on the strike. This approach showed what the groups understood the content of the news to be on specific issues. It was then possible to compare this with what they believed to be `true', and to examine the sources of their beliefs, as well as why they either accepted or rejected media accounts. Earlier research with the Glasgow University Media Group had focussed on the content of television news. This showed how the presentation of certain views and explanations together with the embracing and underlining of them by journalists was part of a general process by which the news was structured. The conclusion was that some key themes were highlighted in the news text. The current study indicated which news themes had been retained in the memories of audience members. One notable result was the clarity with which such themes were recalled and the close correspondence between news programmes written by the groups and some actual news bulletins. Some groups were able to reproduce not only the thematic content of news bulletins on issues such as violence, but also the structure and language of actual news headlines. Television news (and to a lesser extent the press) was found to be a major source of information for many people in the groups and had a clear influence on some elements of belief. However, it was also found that direct experience could have a crucial influence on how new information from the media was understood. Such direct contacts, together with political culture, class experience and processes of logic were the most important factors in the relation between the reception of a news message and what was finally believed by the audience.

Abstract:
Angélica Gorodischer is a contemporary Argentine writer of international renown. However, the initial period of his literary production, dominant SF (Science Fiction), remains largely unknown. Beyond their undeniable literary quality, these texts and deserve to be highlighted for thinking they trigger the social relations of domination, some paradoxes of political action but also a period of intense conflict of Argentine History (political and social conflicts, dictatorships and 1966 1976) .We use for this analysis tools developed by sociocriticism theory supplementing them with the use of gender studies and studies utopia and SF. This first question the periodization established by literary criticism to be able to identify gender issues that shape the early works of the writer. We then extend the analysis by taking into account the consubstantiality of social relations and examining the questioning of the idea of nature. Finally, we consider the work as an open and critical encyclopedia that promotes the utopian impulse. Texts and invite the person reading to meditate on the characteristics of an ethics of ambiguity guiding its political and promoting social equity share

Darke, Paul Anthony. "The cinematic construction of physical disability as identified through the application of the social model of disability to six indicative films made since 1970 : A day in the death of Joe Egg (1970), The raging moon (1970), The elephant man (1980), Whose life is it anyway? Abstract:
In writing this thesis I have tried to get beneath the clichés of disability imagery to reveal the social constructions, through cinematic processes, of images of physical impairment as disability. The thesis must be seen in the context of other writers who have done similar work on other marginalised groups within our society that are regularly portrayed on the cinema screen: gays, blacks, women and, to a lesser extent, the working-class. The construction of school of writers, using representation theory, who have over the last two decades revealed that which had previously been taken for granted - the ideological and cultural influences on and of imagery that have an impact upon the lived lives of those represented - have been my guiding influence. The Social Model of disability theory has been used as my primary methodological framework and analytical approach. In the introduction I provide an outline of Disability Theory — i.e., the Medical Model and the Social Model of disability - and define the theoretical framework within which the thesis has been written to make the thesis comprehensible in the wider context of the social construction of 'disability'. In the literature review of disability imagery writing (Chapter One), I include writing that is journalistic rather than academic to redress the general scarcity of writing on disabling images. In this thesis, the cinematic techniques that construct impairment as disability, i.e., pathologise impairment as Other(ness), are identified. I explore three specific areas of cinema and culture in Chapters Two, Three and Four of the thesis: the use, or non-use, of stereotypes; the representation of the family in relation to disability, and finally, the use of the abnormal body to pathologise impairment.

This thesis discusses the symbolic disputes involving the conservative and liberal project of “redemocratization” engaged by political groups which constructed themselves and were constructed as legitimate symbols of democracy and “opposition” to civil military regime during the presidential succession (1984-1985). We have emphasized the figure of Tancredo Neves because we regard him as an acceptable conception of democracy for both political and economical elites in the 1980s. At the same time, we have highlighted Workers Party in order to evidence that the “redemocratization” model plotted by political elites did not configure as a “consensus” concerning the media propaganda which praised the opposite. This research has been carried out through the analysis of both political discourses and mainstream media regarded as a symbolic instrument which covered the theses and arguments in agreement on one hand, and the disregarding of contrary “opinions” on the other hand. We have utilized mainly the newspapers O Globo and Folha de São Paulo regarded as means which intervene in the political field, by defining agendas and legitimating positions. Considering the sociological theory, our discussion has been based on Pierre Bordieu’s concept of political field which enables the strangeness of socially-constructed “truths”, and thus the notion of democracy which won the symbolic struggles in the 1980s. In this sense, our analytical proposal points out that within the scenary of disputes around the “redemocratization”, the winner political groups were the ones who represented a conservative conception of democracy whose foundation relied on the political and media effort engaged in erasing their defensors’ struggle against the dictatorial period, as well as the silencing of alternative proposals which “contested” it. Therefore, a myth of “redemocratization” without antagonisms was constructed, by annuling the political plurality from an authoritarian imposition of a truth that restates the classical thesis of a liberal-capitalist model regards the only way capable of promoting democracy. At last, we have verified that a conservative project of “redemocratization” we bequeathed is a conception of democracy which defends the Democratic State of Law, and in a contradictory way, it dislikes the social democratization.

history of public education in Goiás. The research object was the Goiás Institute of Education (IEG). It was also tried to reflect on the relations, objectives and results obtained in the period from 1964 to 1984, in which education was under the aegis of the military dictatorship. The specific objective of this research was to address, through the bias of historical-documentary study, the period defined above, besides understanding how they were given and how they influenced the pedagogical practices in the formation of the teaching staff and student explaining the trajectory covered by the IEG in 1964 to 1984. The periodization seeks to contemplate part of the history of education in Goiás: the military coup of 1964, where the school issue was pointed out as one of the great concerns and understood as an instrument of ideological intervention, until the changes that came with the political opening in Brazil in 1984, a historical reconstruction exploring the teaching identity construction and school practices of the Normal School in Goiás. The methodology followed a qualitative approach in the method of bibliographical research, accomplished through documentary analysis and the history of the Institutions Scholars in dialogue with the framework that underlies this study O. At the initial moment of the research, the bibliographical survey was carried out to contribute with the delineation of the questions to be answered in the investigation. For a better understanding and clarity on the subject, a part of the literature related to him was researched, since he understood that the subject is of great relevance for the present society.

O'Prey, Paul G. "The poetry of Robert Graves, 1914-1946." Thesis, University of Bristol, 1993. http://hdl.handle.net/1983/64b25685-9440-4beb-ae89-18226a9af55c.

Full text
Abstract:
The thesis argues that between the years 1914 and 1946 Robert Graves developed a concept of poetry which was to a large extent defined by his ideological attitude to the society or 'age' in which he lived, and further argues that this had significant consequences for the poetry he wrote during the period. The thesis argues that Graves's ideas on poetry were particularly influenced by two major experiences: his active service in France during the First World War, and his thirteen year 'literary partnership' with the American poet Laura Riding. It considers the nature of these experiences, and analyses Graves's poetic response to them. The thesis attempts to show the importance of the post-war 'reconstruction' as one of the principal themes of his poetry, and in considering those poems contingent on the personal aesthetic established in The White Goddess, argues that this aesthetic was a response to, and rationalisation of, his experience in the war, his sense of disorientation and alienation in a post-war society he considered hostile to his view of poetry, and his relationship with Riding. The thesis shows that Graves's vision of poetry after the war was as a form of 'representative spokesmanship' for the age in which the poet lived, but that as a consequence of a sense of alienation and his acceptance of the views of Riding, he rejected this concept. Instead he sought an 'independence' from his age and attempted to redefine his personal identity in relation to his social environment. Poetry was no longer simply a means of responding to experience, but was itself 'the good experience', by which the individual poet sought 'self-illumination' and 'personal truth'. The use of poetry as a tool for seeking an awareness of the self led to a compositional technique in which ideas and phrases were worked through various drafts of 'secondary elaboration', and the thesis makes considerable use of Graves's worksheets to examine this process and gain an insight into the thinking behind an often cryptic poetry. Graves's emphasis on poetry as a form of 'spiritual autobiography' produced a body of work which by its nature requires the reader to engage with the biographical context of the poems if he or she is to understand their meaning fully and the thesis therefore draws on recently available material to establish this context.

This study aims to explain the characteristics of the high school students organization in the period from 1964 to 1985. The time frame is justified insofar as it represents the exercise of a military government in which students and other sectors of society were organized to break with many actions of this government. The study focused on the high school student movement in the state of Paraná (Brazil), since there is no literature produced on this form of student organization, and since we believe that it contributed in the way the military government was organized. During data collection, we found great difficulty in consulting the sources, since the ones dealing specifically with the object of study were primary sources and, as it is already known to many, history has been showing that there is no interest in filing some kinds of documents, especially from a period in the history of the country with so many obscure events. The study on the high school student movement in Paraná was carried out in light of the social, economic and political aspects of the reporting period. The primary sources were analyzed on the basis of a theoretical framework which would propitiate systematic and accurate use of data. The secondary sources dealt with the way society was organized in that period and the production concerning the Brazilian student movement, either the university or the high school one. In order to elucidate how high school students from Paraná were organized during that period, this dissertation is organized into four chapters. The first two chapters aims to provide context for the reader, bringing to the debate, firstly, the strongest period of civil-military dictatorship (1964-1974), and secondly, the process of political opening. In both chapters the government s and student movement s actions are highlighted. In the following chapter, we examine the primary sources, which consist of documents filed in the Public Archives of Paraná that are part of DOPS-PR Archives. The last chapter focuses on the study of memory through a brief analysis of the interviews conducted with some activists of the high school movement in Paraná, and through the discussion on the contrasts between the story "told" by the activists and what is written in official documents of the period.

Hodgson-Blackburn, Jacqueline. "Beyond mourning and melancholia : depression in the work of five contemporary North American women writers." Thesis, Sheffield Hallam University, 1999. http://shura.shu.ac.uk/19804/.

Full text
Abstract:
This dissertation is an investigation into the representation of mourning and melancholia in the work of Elizabeth Smart, Evelyn Lau, Siri Hustvedt, Sarah Sheard and Kathryn Harrison. The thesis addresses women's historic exclusion from the discourse of melancholia from a feminist perspective. It will consider the political and theoretical implications of women's absence from this discursive field by focusing on the cultural legacy of their devalorised status. Freud's essay, 'Mourning and Melancholia', first published in 1917, is cited as an important conceptual model exercising considerable influence over subsequent theoreticians working within this area. My thesis builds on Freud's attempt to establish a clear-cut binary division between the twinned states of mourning and melancholia. The thesis reveals how Freud's construction of melancholia as a pathological condition, shadowing the normative state of mourning, has been linked with psychoanalytic constructions of femininity by leading feminist theorists such as Irigaray, Silverman and Kristeva. The first chapter provides an overview of melancholia as a gendered discourse privileging male practitioners; the subsequent chapters provide symptomatic readings of five novels written by five contemporary North American women. The psychoanalytic interpretation of these readings, ranging from blocked or postponed mourning to the ideological loss of a father through incest, illustrate the close epistemological relationship between the construction of femininity and melancholia within Western historical and philosophical traditions. This thesis is not concerned with merely re-interpreting Western cultural prejudices related to the discourse of melancholia from a late twentieth century postfeminist perspective. Instead, the thesis demonstrates how contemporary women writers are engaged in a revisionary approach to the representation of loss within their work, by insistently inscribing their active, desiring bodies on the discourses of heterosexual femininity and melancholia. By refusing to disappear from the margins of the melancholic text, I show how the resisting melancholic daughter produces a counter-discourse that destroys the conventional dynamics of the family romance within Western literary traditions. The 'writing cure' replaces the 'talking cure' in this context. By removing the patriarchal figurehead from the text, and the psychoanalytic confessional discourse surrounding it, women writers challenge misogynist constructions of femininity within contemporary literature.

Galikowski, Maria B. "Art and politics in China, 1949-1986." Thesis, University of Leeds, 1990. http://etheses.whiterose.ac.uk/2287/.

Full text
Abstract:
The objective of this thesis is to examine the complex pattern of the relationship between politics and art in the People’s Republic of China between 1949 and 1986, analysing the three most important aspects of this relationship , namely organisational structures, the ideological framework and political movements. The principal issue addressed in this research is that of how the Communist Party's policies on culture and art have affected the development of art theory and the creative work of artists in China. The thesis consists of four chapters representing the major historical stages of the People's Republic of China. Each chapter focuses on the different manifestations of the relationship between politics and art in aparticular social phase. Chapter one deals with the early formation of the organisational structures , the ideological framework and political campaigns in the arena of Chinese culture and art between 1949 and 1956. Chapter two examines the further development and the vacillating nature of the relationship between the state and artists during the years 1957 to 1966. Chapter three looks at the stormy years of the Cultural Revolution during which the political discourse and artistic work were merged. The fourth Chapter discusses the new trends of Chinese art by describing the newly emerging "self" (individual subjectivity) and the search for modernity in the period of 1978 to 1986. The general methodology employed in my thesis is composed of three dimensions - social, historical and comparative. The analysis of the social conditions and the general account of the historical process are closely combined with individual case studies. A comparative perspective is also adopted in order to reveal the extent of foreign influence. The central argument submitted in the thesis is that art in the People's Republic of China should be seen as an image of social reality. The argument is pursued by a method which seeks to relate art to social-political settings, and to explore not only the aesthetic dimension of artistic work, but also the political discourse embodied in it.

Morello, Nathalie. "A la recherche de la conscience féminine : étude de la représentation de la femme/de l'écrivaine dans l'oeuvre fictive et autobiographique de F. Sagan (1954-1984)." Thesis, University of Edinburgh, 1995. http://hdl.handle.net/1842/21431.

Full text
Abstract:
The subject of my thesis is a study of the image of the female characters and of the writer in novels and autobiographical works published by Francoise Sagan between 1954 and 1984. Since the publication of Bonjour Tristesse in 1954, F. Sagan's work has inspired an astounding amount of comment from journalistic critics but has been consistently ignored by academics on the grounds that it does not provide much intellectual substance. I have endeavoured to analyse the many reasons which apparently justify this condescending attitude, before attempting to place her literature in the light of the various definitions that feminist critics have offered of contemporary feminine and feminist literature (essentially Simone de Beauvoir and the Anglo-American researchers). The study of her work indicates the evolution of F. Sagan's intellectual and aesthetic preoccupations during the three stages of her first thirty years as a writer. I have initially concentrated on analysing the image of the female character, her consciousness, and her moral, sexual and social identity in the first six novels published before the emergence of the feminist movement in France. This has enabled me to determine to what extent these novels conform to the various models suggested by feminist prescriptive criticism but also to what extent they differ. The subsequent study of later novels has allowed me to develop F. Sagan's conception of the essence of human relationships and to expose her denial of an innate male/female opposition. A chapter has been devoted to her autobiographical works in order to show the role assigned by the writer to this particular genre: to affirm her self and the value of her writing in a literary environment still very much dominated by the male perspective. Humour is a recurring feature of F. Sagan's both fictional and autobiographical writing, and I have tried to define the reasons for its use and the subversive consequences of it on her texts.

Abstract:

Abstract:
The content of modern African Literature in colonial languages was, by and large, determined by the nature of the political events before, during and after colonialism. In Ethiopia, however, the main themes of fiction were decided by issues pertaining to Western civilisation and the best ways of adapting it to Ethiopian conditions. The thesis examines the theme of progress through close study of the 'missionaries' of change, namely, the intellectual characters in Ethiopian novels. It takes four representative novels published between 1930 and 1974 as primary sources for the study. Other important novels related with our topic are briefly discussed in Chapter 1 and 2. The rest of the works which have thematic connections with the intellectual stratum are listed in the bibliography.

The objective of this research is to investigate and analyze how Veja magazine made the cover over the role of class organizations (CUT, PT, FIESP e CNI) between the years 1985-1989. We assume that Veja magazine acts as a private apparatus of hegemony, since it proposes referrals, organize, create consensus and shares its world view with a certain fraction of the bourgeois class, in this period studied we concluded that Veja get closer of the fractions of the bourgeois class industrial business of the Brazil. The time frame of the research included the years 1985-1989, it was a remarkable period in Brazilian history, due to "end the military dictatorship" (but not the end of the rubble of authoritarian military dictatorship, once that, Constitution remained in force for the period of dictatorship until August 1988, the repression to the social movements and forms of mobilization and organization of the working class, the illegality of the strike, the permanence of the Ministry of Armed Forces and National Security all coordinated by the military), the promulgation of the New Constitution and with it the legality of the strike for some categories and the intensification of class struggle. Due to these factors the dissertation sought to discuss, analyze, investigate from the materials of the Veja magazine how it made the cover of the economic plans implemented during the years 1985 -1989 and the consequences for the working class. So as well as investigate the coverage that the magazine Veja made about the acting of the class organizations (CUT, PT, FIESP e CNI) in the period 1985-1989 and the clashes between these organizations

Abstract:
This thesis aims to explore questions of artistic interdisciplinarity through a study of the Catalan theatre company La Fura dels Baus's practice in the period from 1979 to 1989. This study sees artistic interdisciplinarity and La Fura as prominent aspects of contemporary theatre, which have received little critical attention in theatre studies. The general introduction attempts to define a conceptual and contextual framework for this thesis. Chapter 1 examines `artistic interdisciplinarity' as a significant conceptual instrument for this study. Chapter 2 investigates some instances of artistically interdisciplinary practice before and after performance art. Chapter 3 takes a general look at what constitutes the wider social and aesthetic context within which La Fura had its inception. Chapter 4 focuses on the group's early productions in Catalonia from 1979 to 1983, a period often neglected by scholars writing on the company's work. Chapter 5 presents Accions (1983-87),S u o/Suz (1985-91) and TierMon (1988- 90). These three productions comprise the features of the lenguajefurero. Chapter 6,7 and 8 examine these features, La Fura's manipulation of scenic threads such as space, time, sound, image, body and movement as well as the interdisciplinary exchanges with different arts. Chapter 8 also looks at the relations among La Fura's productions and questions of national and aesthetic identities in Catalonia and Spain. The final unit presents the conclusions of this thesis. Through a cross-disciplinary methodology, this thesis has the double ambition of stimulating further debates and actions in re-mapping theatrical language as well as connecting ideas about both main objects of study to an understanding of the art of theatre and its environments at the end of the twentieth century.

Salameh, Fahd. "The Jordanian novel (1980-1990) : a study and an assessment." Thesis, SOAS, University of London, 1998. http://eprints.soas.ac.uk/28962/.

Abstract:
This study traces the origin and development of the Jordanian novel from 1920s to late 1980s, and consists of three parts in addition to the introduction and conclusion. The introduction covers the rationale for undertaking such a study as well as the methodology and critical perspective adopted in this thesis. It also includes some basic definitions relevant to the work itself The first part comprises two chapters. The first covers an historical survey describing the genealogy of the Jordanian novel, the different stages of its development and the major discernible, trends up to 1970s. The second chapter examines the works of Ghalib Halasa produced during 1970s until his death in 1989, which are considered important contributions to the novel in Jordan. The second part, which comprises two chapters, deals with the experimental trends during 1980s up to 1990. The first of these considers the works of Mu'nis al-Razzaz in detail, shedding light on the experimentation in the techniques and the form of the novel. The second of these takes Elias Farkouh's work Qamat al- Zabad as another attempt to explore new forms of composition and narration. The third part presents the Jordanian novel produced in the conventional form with special reference to a particular work by Ziyad Qasim, who stands out among his contemporaries in his artistic achievements. In the conclusion, a general evaluation of the Jordanian novel of 1980s is given. It is concluded therein that the experimental novelists, such as Mu'nis al-Razzaz an Elias Farkouh, influenced the subsequent generation more profoundly than any other leading novelists of that period.
