Abstract:
Abstract. Two new methods for uniform flow discharge computation are presented, validated and compared with other available formulas. The first method derives from the well-known Huthoff algorithm, which is first shown to be dependent on the way the river cross-section is discretized into several sub-sections. The second method assumes the vertically averaged longitudinal velocity to be a function only of the friction factor and of the so-called "local hydraulic radius", computed as the ratio between the integral of the elementary areas around a given vertical and the integral of the elementary solid boundaries around the same vertical. Both integrals are weighted with a linear shape function, equal to zero at a distance from the integration variable which is proportional to the water depth according to an empirical coefficient β. Both formulas are validated against (1) laboratory experimental data, (2) discharge hydrographs measured in a real site, where the friction factor is estimated from an unsteady-state analysis of water levels recorded in two different river cross sections, (3) the 3-D solution obtained using the commercial ANSYS CFX code, computing the steady state uniform flow in a short reach of a prismatic channel, with known water level in the downstream section.

Abstract:
Natural boundary integral method is applied to deal with plate problems defined in irregular domains. We divide the solution into two parts, a particular solution for inhomogeneous biharmonic equation and the general solution for homogeneous biharmonic equation. For the former, the direct expansion method of boundary conditions is used to treat the arbitrary domains, and the processes of natural boundary integral method coupling with finite element method are omitted. Numerical experiments show that the method is very simple and of high accuracy.

Abstract:
This paper is concerned with the problem of obtaining a unique solution for radiation at irregular frequencies when an integral equation of frequency averaged quadratic pressure (FAQP) is used to get robust predictions at medium and high frequencies. It is proved that there is no unique solution of the integral equation of FAQP at irregular frequencies, and existence and uniqueness of solutions under four types of boundary conditions are discussed. A combined energy boundary integral equation formulation (CEBIEF) is presented and proves to be efficient to overcome the nonuniqueness of the integral equation of FAQP. The numerical examples are given to demonstrate the versatility of the CEBIEF method with a proposed function correctly indicating a solution.

Abstract:
Abstract The effects of irregular in situ ocean sampling on estimates of annual globally integrated upper ocean heat content anomalies (OHCA) are investigated for sampling patterns from 1955 to 2006. An analytical method is presented for computing the effective area covered by an objective map for any given in situ sampling distribution. To evaluate the method, appropriately scaled sea surface height (SSH) anomaly maps from Archiving, Validation, and Interpretation of Satellite Oceanographic data (AVISO) are used as a proxy for OHCA from 1993 to 2006. Use of these proxy data demonstrates that the simple area integral (SI) of such an objective map for sparse datasets does not agree as well with the actual integral as the weighted integral (WI), defined as the simple integral weighted by the ratio of the total area over the “observed” area. From 1955 to 1966, in situ ocean sampling is inadequate to estimate accurately annual global integrals of the proxy upper OHCA. During this period, the SI for the sampling pattern of any given year underestimates the 13-yr trend in proxy OHCA from 1993 to 2006 by around 70%, and confidence limits for the WI are often very large. From 1967 to 2003 there appear to be sufficient data to estimate annual global integrals. Limited by the constraints of this analysis, the SI for any given year’s sampling pattern still underestimates the 1993–2006 13-yr trend in the proxy by around 30%, but the WI matches the trend well with small confidence limits. For 2004 through 2006 in situ sampling, with near-global in situ Argo data coverage, the 1993–2006 13-yr trend in the proxy is equally well represented by the SI or WI.

The Generalized Integral Transform Technique is applied solve the Navier-Stokes equations for an irregular geometry duct in sinusoidal shape in an incomprehensible and laminar flow. The formulation was used in terms of current function. A general filter has been adopted that adapts to the irregular contour to increase the convergence of the solution. Different geometries were analyzed by modifying the length ratio (λ/a) and the height ratio (Hmin/Hmax) for Reynolds number in the range 25-400. For the same Reynolds number rising one of the two geometrical parameters the flow recirculation is lower and the decrease of the parameters increases the flow recirculation. The recirculation for λ/a = 16 and Hmin/Hmax = 0.7 is low in Reynolds = 400. Considering the configuration where λ/a = 4 and Hmin/Hmax = 0.3 the flow recirculation is observed at low Reynolds numbers (Re = 25). The friction factor, based on the viscous forces, calculated showed the same pattern of the literature.

Ngobigha, Felix Opuama. "Development of a discrete numerical approach to the Fredholm Integral Method for evaluating microwave scattering by irregular hydrometeors." Thesis, University of Essex, 2015. http://repository.essex.ac.uk/15970/.

Full text
Abstract:
A new approach to the implementation of Fredholm Integral Method (FIM) was developed to evaluate microwave scattering by irregular hydrometeors in the melting layer where snowflakes aggregate. These contain air, ice and liquid water and therefore complex to model. In this study, the particles were modelled discretizing their volume, filling it with cubic or spherical cells according to their weighted contents. The FIM presented represents a departure from earlier work where the numerical integration is no longer based on expansion in a set of polynomials but based on direct spatial integration. The strength of our approach is that the computations are performed in the spatial frequency domain. As a result, the angular scattering pattern is strongly connected to the Spatial Fourier Transform of the scatterer; hence, for electrically small particles the angular spectrum is relatively smooth and the number of pivots required for integration is relatively low. The theoretical analysis of the first Born term is comparatively simple. Comparisons show a good agreement between the first Born term using our approach and the exact method by Holt. However, the theory of the second Born term is relatively difficult. The approach taken by Hankel cannot be applied essentially because of the power of p in the integrand being odd. An alternative approach which still involves contour integration method uses quandrantal contour in combination with a conditioning weighting function to control the magnitude of the integrand. The numerical evaluation of the scattering functions are performed and compared. The results suggested similar pattern in comparison with the Mie theory and other established numerical algorithms for homogeneous spherical or ellipsoidal dielectric scatterers. This technique has a good potential to be applied to irregular hydrometeors since only the distribution of the dielectric constants need to be changed.

In the context of the variational problems related to integral functionals, we study some necessary conditions for a solution u without standard growth assumptions and strong differentiability conditions on the Lagrangian L. In particular, we investigate the validity of the Euler-Lagrange equation, in its classical and non-classical form, in the cases of functionals with non-differentiable convex Lagrangian or with super-exponential growth for L. Moreover, we investigate the regularity properties for minimizers, concerning higher integrability of the gradient as well as higher differentiability under general growth conditions and mild differentiability assumptions on L.

The present thesis: The socio-penal control of adolescents on judicial process in São Paulo : between protection and punishment, is aimed at the examination of the effective results of the socio-penal control of adolescents involved in infringement process. The references selected were the Children and Adolescents Statute and the Juvenile Justice Administration System in São Paulo. The field for investigation chosen was the examination of the legislation (Minors Code 1979, Children and Adolescent Statute and Penal Code) and an analysis of 42 lawsuit papers filed during 2000, at the Forum of Special Jurisdiction for Infancy and Youthful of São Paulo State Justice Court. The results obtained indicate that: a) in the Minors Code 1979, there was already an intention of socio-penal control of adolescents involved in infringement process, but its materialization was instituted by ECA; b) regarding the Minors Code, many processes of discontinuity and continuity happened with ECA, remaining still the socio-historical of capitalist society; c) ECA owns Penal Code awards to normalize the procedures of infringement acts perpetrate by adolescents; d) the administration systems of juvenile justice promotes injustice instead of justice and also facilitate the occurrence of a perverse cycle of adolescents incrimination; e) the paradigm of integral protection conceived adolescents as subjects of rights and duties, constituting the juvenile penal right, that besides establishing the adolescent right to be summoned to court , established also his possibility to be deprived of liberty and ,therefore, to suffer a penal punishment; f) the juvenile penal right was converted into minors penal right, when it did not implement the quality of processual security of a due legal process; g) there is a tutelary and operating conception of socio-educative measures for the socio-juridical practices; h) ECA sociable horizon is regulated by the plan of a conservative modernization. Such assemblage of elements drive us to a (in) conclusion that pointed over and above the juvenile socio-penal control

Abstract:
In the present work two deterministic techniques, based on the electric- and magnetic- field integral equations (EFIE and MFIE, respectively) are applied in the propagation prediction of VHF and UHF vertically-polarized waves over irregular terrains. An electrically-smooth terrains profile and a near-grazing incidence are assumed, enabling the terrains to be treated as a perfect magnetic conductor (PMC). By means of the equivalent principle, the terrain is further removed and equivalent magnetic currents placed to impose the necessary boundary conditions. In the equivalent problem, both source and equivalent currents are assumed to radiate in an ideal free-space. To reduce the numerical burden, the terrains is further assumed perpendicular invariant (with respect to the plane of incidence). Also, a spherical distribution is assumed for the magnetic current enabling the reduction of the involved integrals into simple line integrals. The usual Moment-Method technique is applied to solve for theunknown currents. However, to render the problem numerically tractable in practical scenarios, backskattering is further neglected and a forward scheme implemented to recurrently obtains the currents. The scattered field is then obtained from the source and equivalent currents. Both techniques are then compared in two case studies: a PMC wedge and apractical terrains profile. Numerical predictions are conducted to establish the pathloss behavior as a function of both the distances from the transmitter and the height above ground. For the cases investigated, is demonstrated that the MFIE-based technique provides the same level of accuracy (as the EFIE-based one) but with less basis functions to describe the currents (specially where the line-of-sight is obstructed), thus speeding up the whole process

Abstract:

Abstract:

Abstract:
Sex and the Nazi Soldier is the first monograph that comprehensively examines rape and other forms of sexual violence perpetrated by German Wehrmacht soldiers and SS troops in the occupied Soviet Union but also considers sexual exploitation, from visits to secret prostitutes or officially established military brothels to bartering for sex, as well as consensual liaisons. As a historical study on the German military it “sets a new standard for understanding Nazi occupation policies in the Soviet Union” (Norman Naimark). As an empirical case study on the intertwinedness of gender and sexuality in times of war and genocide, it contributes to developing a more nuanced understanding of soldiers’ sexual behavior and the ways in which military commands assess soldierly sexuality and integrate it into their strategic thinking. Following the current debates in the US and Western Europe, one can easily get the impression that sexual violence primarily occurs in the warfare of irregular actors, such as terror groups, rebels or private armies. The historical example of World War II, however, suggests that the reality of who perpetrates sexual violence when, where and against whom is more complicated. This book hopes to deepen our understanding of the factors that facilitate and shape but also curtail sexual violence. It also aims to broaden the debate and ask more generally how sex, violence and war intersect, even in non-violent sexual encounters.

Abstract:
AbstractProper structural system and performance-based seismic design are the key issues in designing high-rise building structures. This project has unique building facade shape and complex plane function layout, and the structural plane and vertical layout are irregular. The superstructure adopts assembled integral concrete frame-shear wall structure, which is judged as out-of-code high-rise building by seismic review. Firstly, the site conditions, foundation design and structural form selection are introduced. Then, YJK software is used to calculate and analyze the seismic force of the superstructure, and the seismic performance indexes of the structure can meet the requirements of the code. Finally, the regularity of each structural unit of the superstructure is judged, and the corresponding main seismic strengthening measures are put forward.

Abstract:
This chapter focuses on one aspect of spending, that on ‘medical people’. In particular it looks at doctors, nurses and so-called irregular healers on a spectrum from bonesetters, lay healers and to quacks. Three core findings stand out: that doctors came to occupy an increasingly distinctive and expensive place in medical welfare in most places by the 1820s; that there were distinct regional cultures of nursing, with Norfolk employing few of them and paying them badly while in Berkshire nursing was integral to parish responses when faced by sick claimants; and that irregular providers did not die out as doctors extended their reach.

Abstract:
The analytical method such as the boundary integral (element) method or the series expansion method is usually used to solve the wave scattering problem. In these methods, the singular Green’s function should be determined firstly; the main difficulty of the use of the Lamb’s singular solutions in integral form to represent the diffracted fields is the numerical implementation for the evaluation of those improper integrals. The integrands of these integrals are highly irregular and oscillatory. In this paper, a technique is proposed to calculate the integral in wave-number domain based on the method of steepest descent. After replacing the original integration path by steepest decent path, the wave-number integral results in a Gauss-Hermite type quadrature, so the oscillating characteristics of the original integrand can be removed and results a non-oscillating integrand, it is very helpful in computing efficiency.

Abstract:
This paper presents a parallelization of a numeric method for solving systems of integral equations. The algorithm was originally developed to find transitions of superconductor properties based on environment conditions. The sequential numerical method presents a wide range of parallelization levels, with irregular processing costs. A parallel implementation of it has the oportunity of adapting the parallel grain, compromising load-balancing and communication, and achieving better efficiency.

Abstract:
