Walker, Jeremy D. "Exploring the Synthesis and Characterization of Nanoenergetic Materials from Sol-Gel Chemistry." Diss., Georgia Institute of Technology, 2007. http://hdl.handle.net/1853/14573.

Full text
Abstract:
Nanoenergetic composite materials have been synthesized by a sol-gel chemical process where the addition of a weak base molecule induces the gelation of a hydrated metal salt solution. A proposed proton scavenging mechanism, where a weak base molecule extracts a proton from the coordination sphere of the hydrated iron (III) complex in the gelation process to form iron (III) oxide/hydroxide, FeIIIxOyHz, has been confirmed for the weak base propylene oxide (PO), a 1,2 epoxide, as well as for the weak bases tetrahydrofuran (THF), a 1,4 epoxide, and pyridine, a heterocyclic nitrogen-containing compound. THF follows a similar mechanism as PO; the epoxide extracts a proton from the coordination sphere of the hydrated iron complex forming a protonated epoxide which then undergoes irreversible ring-opening after reaction with a nucleophile in solution. Pyridine also extracts a proton from the hydrated metal complex, however, the stable six-membered molecule has low associated ring strain and does not endure ring-opening. Fe2O3/Al energetic systems were synthesized from the epoxides PO, trimethylene oxide (TMO) and 3,3 dimethyl oxetane (DMO). Surface area analysis of the synthesized matrices shows a direct correlation between the surface area of the iron (III) oxide matrix and the quantified exothermic heat of reaction of the nano-scaled aluminum-containing energetic material due to the magnitude of the interfacial surface area contact between the iron (III) oxide matrix and the aluminum particles. The Fe2O3(PO)/Al systems possess the highest heat of reaction values due to the oxide interfacial surface area available for contact with the aluminum particles. Also, reactions containing nano-scale aluminum react differently than those containing micron-scale aluminum. RuO2/Al energetic systems behave differently dependent on the atmosphere the sample is heated. Heating the RuO2/Al samples in an inert atmosphere results in the complete reduction of the ruthenium oxide matrix to Ru(0) before reaction with the aluminum particles, resulting in the exothermic formation of RuxAly intermetallics, with the stoichiometry dependent on the initial Ru:Al concentration. However, heating the samples in an oxygen-rich atmosphere results in an exothermic reaction between RuO2 and Al.

Abstract:
Thin films (5nm ± 2nm thick) of ZrO2, Al2O3, TiO2, Sm, Gd, Zr, Ni, and Pt were deposited onto TbFeCo films (100nm ± 20nm thick) on silicon and graphite substrates and analyzed with XPS as prospective candidates for TbFeCo diffusion barriers. Metals were chosen primarily according to electronegativity. Samples were typically heated to 272°C in UHV for 20 hours to enhance diffusion. Experiments with the metals were performed in a more consistent manner than with the oxides. The Sm, Gd, and Zr were reactively oxidized during the deposition. The Sm/Sm-oxide and Gd/Gd-oxide appeared to be favorable candidates for TbFeCo diffusion barriers. TbFeCo was not detected near the surface before or after heating the samples to 272°C for 20 hours and depth profiles indicated oxygen contamination decreased steadily as the barrier/TbFeCo interface was approached. For the other materials examined, either the oxides were reduced (at least partially) during heating to 272°C (381°C for Al₂O₃) or diffusion of TbFeCo was detected after heating, indicating that they would not be favorable candidates for TbFeCo diffusion barriers.

Abstract:
In this research, a temperature dependent tribological investigation of selected ternary oxides was undertaken. Based on the promising results of previous studies on silver based ternary oxides, copper based ternary oxides were selected to conduct a comparative study since both copper and silver are located in the same group in the periodic table of the elements. Two methods were used to create ternary oxides: (i) solid chemical synthesis to create powders and (ii) sputtering to produce thin films. X-ray diffraction was used to explore the evolution of phases, chemical properties, and structural properties of the coatings before and after tribotesting. Scanning electron microscopy, Auger scanning nanoprobe spectroscopy, and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy were used to investigate the chemical and morphological properties of these materials after sliding tests. These techniques revealed that chameleon coatings of copper ternary oxides produce a friction coefficient of 0.23 when wear tested at 430 °C. The low friction is due to the formation of copper tantalate phase and copper in the coatings. All sputtering coatings showed similar tribological properties up to 430 °C.

The thermal conductivities of electrochemically tuned strontium cobalt oxides (SCO) are significantly different among the perovskite SrCoO3 (P-SCO), the brownmillerite SrCoO2.5 (BM-SCO) and the hydrogenated HSrCoO2.5 (H-SCO)1. The underlying mechanism causing this large difference is still unclear. And phonon properties in SCO have not been investigated thoroughly or have some contradictive predictions. In this work, we have calculated the thermal conductivities in P-SCO and BM-SCO by applying molecular and lattice dynamics, and successfully reconstructed the large difference of the thermal conductivities, consistent with measurements. Furthermore, several phonon properties including heat capacities, group velocities, lifetimes and mean free paths have been calculated, and the key roles of local atomic environment and crystal symmetry in determining the thermal conductivities have been identified. We have also analyzed the impact of interfaces, isotropic strains and defects on thermal conductivities, predicted the neutron scattering intensity in P-SCO, and tested the accuracy and performance of molecular dynamics based on deep learning. Additionally, even though the calculations about the phonon properties in H-SCO are not complete, it still offers some inspirations about its thermal conductivity. The thorough investigations about the phonon properties and the mechanisms determining the thermal conductivities in SCO may benefit future research about tunable thermal conductivities in complex oxides.

Abstract:
Ruthenium and ruthenium dioxide thin films have shown great promise in various applications, such as thick film resistors, buffer layers for yttrium barium copper oxide (YBCO) superconducting thin films, and as electrodes in ferroelectric memories. Other potential applications in Si based complementary metal oxide semiconductor (CMOS) devices are currently being studied. The search for alternative metal-based gate electrodes as a replacement of poly-Si gates has intensified during the last few years. Metal gates are required to maintain scaling and performance of future CMOS devices. Ru based materials have many desirable properties and are good gate electrode candidates for future metal-oxide-semiconductor (MOS) device applications. Moreover, Ru and RuO2 are promising candidates as diffusion barriers for copper interconnects. In this thesis, the thermal stability and interfacial diffusion and reaction of both Ru and RuO2 thin films on HfO2 gate dielectrics were investigated using Rutherford backscattering spectrometry (RBS), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) and scanning electron microscopy (SEM). An overview of Ru and RuO2/HfO2 interface integrity issues will be presented. In addition, the effects of C ion modification of RuO2 thin films on the physico-chemical and electrical properties are evaluated.

Chin, Suk Fun. "Superparamagnetic nanoparticles for biomedical applications." University of Western Australia. School of Biomedical, Biomolecular and Chemical Sciences, 2009. http://theses.library.uwa.edu.au/adt-WU2009.0128.

Abstract:
[Truncated abstract] In the past decade, the synthesis of superparamagnetic iron oxide nanoparticles (SPIONs) has received considerable attention due to their potential applications in biomedical fields. However, success in size and shape control of the SPIONs has been mostly achieved through organic routes using large quantities of toxic or/and expensive precursors in organic reaction medium at high reaction temperature. This has limited the biomedical applications of SPIONs and therefore, development of a synthetic method under aqueous condition that is reproducible, scalable, environmentally benign, and economically feasible for industrial production is of paramount importance in order to fully realise their practical applications. Spinning Disc Processing (SDP) has been used to synthesise superparamagnetic magnetite (Fe3O4) nanoparticles at room temperature via a modified chemical precipitation method under continuous flow condition and offer a potential alternative to be applied to SPIONs production. SDP has extremely rapid mixing under plug flow conditions, effective heat and mass transfer, allowing high throughput with low wastage solvent efficiency. The synthesis process involves passing ammonia gas over a thin aqueous film of Fe2+/3+ which is introduced through a jet feed close to the centre of a rapidly rotating disc (500-2500 rpm). Synthetic parameters such as precursor concentrations, temperature, flow rate, disc speed, and surface texture influence the particle sizes. ... Magnetic silica microspheres are receiving great attention for possible applications in magnetic targeting drug delivery, bioseparation and enzyme isolation. However, the current available methods for preparation suffer from the setback of low loading of Fe3O4 nanoparticles in the silica microsphere, which result in low magnetic moment, thereby limiting their practical applications. Therefore it is of considerable importance to develop new alternative synthetic methods for fabricating magnetic silica microspheres with high magnetic nanoparticles loading. Superparamagentic Fe3O4 nanoparticles (8-10 nm diameter) and curcumin have been encapsulated in mesoporous silica in a simple multiplestep self assembly approach process with high Fe3O4 nanoparticles loading (37%). The synthesis involves loading of curcumin in the Cetyltrimethylammonium bromide (CTAB) micellar rod in the presence of superparamagnetic Fe3O4 nanoparticles via a parallel synergistic approach. The synthesised magnetic mesoporous silica composite material is stable, superparamagnetic with high saturation magnetisation before and after curcumin leaching experiment. Under physiological pH in phosphate buffer, the curcumin is slowly released over several days. These magnetic mesoporous silica are expected to have great potential as targeted drug delivery systems.

Abstract:
The iron oxides are a group of materials with geological, biological, and technological importance. A thermodynamic understanding of these materials is important because it provides information about their relative stabilities, chemical reactivity, and transformations. This study provides the heat capacity of a nanocrystalline magnetite (Fe3O4) sample, bulk hematite (α-Fe2O3), nanocrystalline hematite, akaganéite (β-FeOOH), and lepidocrocite (γ-FeOOH) at temperatures as low as 0.5 K. These measurements were fit to theoretical functions at temperatures lower than 15 K, and the respective thermophysical properties of these materials are discussed. Also the molar entropies of bulk hematite and hydrous nanocrystalline hematite as well as hydrous akaganéite are given. Finally, a ferritin protein powder was prepared for heat capacity measurements by reconstituting the iron core in the presence of an imidazole buffer. This method allowed the introduction of almost 3000 iron atoms into each protein. Heat capacity measurements of apoferritin and the reconstituted ferritin sample are anticipated in the near future with plans to compare the heat capacity of the mineral core to that of other nanocrystalline iron oxides and oxyhydroxides.

Abstract:
Over time the level of inoculant will decrease due to fading and this needs to be compensated bymore additions of inoculant. When casting CGI400 at Scania a one-step method is used, and the inoculant additions are based on the last ladle from the previous oven. Longer stops in production will result in the previous oven not being representable and more inoculant should be added. A method to establish the inoculation level of the base iron in the oven would make it easier to control the process. This study was about inoculation measurements with the help of thermo- analysis of the melt in the oven to get a better understanding how it fluctuates between ovens and changes over time. The study is also about how to implement this tool into production in a foundry. With the help of thermo- analytic measurements, the inoculation level of the melt was established, and the method was also used to see how the level of inoculant changed over. To establish the inoculation additions needed, the saturation point of inoculant was investigated. The results from the study shows that the starting level of inoculant is too low in the melt it also shows that the inoculation level fluctuates over time. The conclusions that can be drawn from this study is that thermos analysis can be used in production to establish the inoculation level, but moremeasurements needs to be conducted to determine its accuracy.

Abstract:
The effects of octadecylamine-functionalized reduced graphene oxide (FRGO) on the frictional and wear properties of diglycidylether of bisphenol-A (DGEBA) epoxy are studied using a pin-on-disk tribometer. It was observed that the addition of FRGO significantly improves the tribological, mechanical, and thermal properties of epoxy matrix. Graphene oxide (GO) was functionalized with octadecylamine (ODA), and then reduction of oxygen-containing functional groups was carried out using hydrazine monohydrate. The Raman and x-ray photoelectron spectroscopy studies confirm significant reduction in oxygen-containing functional groups and formation of ODA functionalized reduced GO. The nanocomposites are prepared by adding 0.1, 0.2, 0.5 and 1.0 wt % of FRGO to the epoxy. The addition of FRGO increases by more than an order of magnitude the sliding distance during which the dynamic friction is ≤ 0.1. After this distance, the friction sharply increases to the range of 0.4 - 0.5. We explain the increase in sliding distance during which the friction is low by formation of a transfer film from the nanocomposite to the counterface. The wear rates in the low and high friction regimes are approximately 1.5 x 10-4 mm3/N·m and 5.5 x 10-4 mm3/N·m, respectively. The nanocomposites exhibit a 74 % increase in Young’s modulus with 0.5 wt. % of FRGO, and an increase in glass transition and thermal degradation temperatures.

Abstract:
Laboratory analyses were conducted on synthetic iron oxides to assess the use of gamma (γ-) irradiation as an efficient sterilization technique to remove microorganisms present in natural bacteriogenic iron oxides (BIOS) and to determine if the technique induces mineralogical changes within the Fe-rich minerals. Fe-oxides (ferrihydrite, lepidocrocite, and goethite) were synthesized with and without alginate (as a proxy for exopolysaccharides) and microbial reductions were carried out using the bacterium Shewanella putrefaciens CN32. A total of 18 Fe-oxide minerals were subjected to microbial reduction to assess redox stability, alteration due to varying levels of gamma irradiation (0, 5, and 28 kGy), and the addition of the exopolysaccharide alginate. Iron reduction rates varied for each Fe-oxide with faster Fe (III) reduction rates observed for the amorphous poorly-sorted 2-line ferrihydrite and slower Fe (III) reduction for the more crystalline Fe-oxides lepidocrocite and goethite. There was no significant impact to the Fe (III) reduction rates due to gamma irradiation (p> 0.05), which was confirmed using a t-test for statistical variance between gamma irradiated samples. However, the addition of alginate enabled lepidocrocite and goethite to achieve maximum Fe (III) reduction by an average of 7 days faster when compared to the Fe-oxides synthesized without the exopolysaccharide.

Abstract:
New stricter environmental legislation requires lower emissions and fuel consumption of automotive engines. Therefore the fuel efficiency must be increased but this leads to higher loads in the engine. As for the exhaust system it is affected by higher thermomechanical loads. Until today the turbo manifold has been nitrocarburized in order to increase the wear resistance in slip joints with other exhaust components. The problem is that there is no knowledge of how the nitrocarburizing affects the thermomechanical properties of the material. The purpose of this thesis work is to examine the difference in thermomechanical properties with and without nitrocarburizing on the three different ductile irons High Silicon, SiMo51 and SiMo1000 intended for exhaust components. Thermo-mechanical fatigue (TMF) experiments were performed on test rods to evaluate difference in number of cycles to failure. In each cycle the test-rod was affected by a combination of mechanical loads and thermal loads resembling those found on exhaust components. Light optical microscopy, scanning electron microscopy and x-ray radiography were used to examine microcracks and damage mechanisms of the materials. It was found that the nitrocarburizing did not affect the number of cycles to failure in any large extent. Further, it was also found that SiMo1000 on average has the longest lifetime followed by SiMo51 and High Silicon. Although, the difference is small for many loadings and taking a 95% confidence band into account the curves overlap for many loading cases.

Abstract:
Junctions are the key component for 3D carbon nanotube (CNT)-graphene seamless hybrid nanostructures. Growth mechanism of junctions of vertical CNTs growing from graphene in the presence of iron catalysts was simulated via quantum mechanical molecular dynamics (QM/MD) methods. CNTs growth from graphene with iron catalysts is based on a ‘‘base-growth’’ mechanism, and the junctions were the mixture of C-C and Fe-C covalent bonds. Pure C-C bonded junctions could be obtained by moving the catalyst during CNT growth or etching and annealing after growth. The growth process of 3D CNT-graphene junctions on copper templates with nanoholes was simulated with molecular dynamic (MD) simulation. There are two mechanisms of junction formation: (i) CNT growth over the holes that are smaller than 3 nm, and (ii) CNT growth inside the holes that are larger than 3 nm. The growth process of multi-layer filleted CNT-graphene junctions on the Al2O3 template was also simulated with MD simulation. A simple analytical model is developed to explain that the fillet takes the particular angle (135°). MD calculations show that 135° filleted junction has the largest fracture strength and thermal conductivity at room temperature compared to junctions with 90°,120°, 150°, and 180° fillets. The tensile strengths of the as-grown C–C junctions, as well as the junctions embedded with metal nanoparticles (catalysts), were determined by a QM/MD method. Metal catalysts remaining in the junctions significantly reduce the fracture strength and fracture energy. Moreover, the thermal conductivities of the junctions were also calculated by MD method. Metal catalysts remaining in the junctions considerably lower the thermal conductivity of the 3D junctions.

Abstract:
This thesis focuses on fire resistance of 19th century cast iron framed structures. Based on material property data obtained from a comprehensive literature review, upper and lower bound relationships of the thermal and mechanical properties of 19th century fireproof floor construction materials have been derived. Because these materials have large variability, a sensitivity analysis has been undertaken to investigate the most effective ways of representing such variability. The sensitivity analysis has indicated that the elevated mechanical properties of cast iron should be reliably quantified. The thermal expansion of cast iron can be taken as equal to that of steel as in EN1993-1-2. Variabilities in other material properties have modest effects on fire resistance of cast iron structures and can be safely modeled according the Eurocode material models for similar modern materials (using thermal properties of modern steel for cast iron, using thermal properties of modern concrete for the insulation materials of cast iron structures). In order to resolve some of the uncertainties in mechanical properties of cast iron at elevated temperatures, a total of 135 elevated temperature tests have been performed, including tension and compression tests, transient state and steady state tests, tests after cooling down and thermal expansion tests. These test results have been used to establish the elevated temperature stress-strain-temperature relationships in tension and compression. Afterwards, calculation methods are developed to calculate the bending resistance of cast iron beams and compression resistance of cast iron columns at elevated temperatures. For cast iron beams, a fibre model has been developed to calculate elevated temperature moment capacity of cast iron beams in jack arch construction, taking into consideration non-uniform temperature distributions in the cross-section. The fibre model divides the cross section into a large number of fine layers and for a given curvature and neutral axis position calculates the strain, the temperature, the stress and the force of each layer. It has been found that under historically applied load, the fire resistance of such beams can be 60 minutes or higher. The Monte Carlo simulation method has been used to take into account the variabilities of important mechanical properties of cast iron at elevated temperatures; Young’s modulus, 0.2% proof stress, ultimate strength, corresponding strain at ultimate strength and failure strain in tension and Young’s modulus, proportional limit and 0.2% proof stress in compression. This has enabled material safety factors of 1.50, 2.50, 4.50 and 5.50 to be proposed for target failure probabilities of 10-1, 10-2, 10-3 and 10-4 respectively. For cast iron columns, a finite element model, built using the commercial software ABAQUS, has been used to examine the effects of changing different design parameters (column slenderness, member imperfection, cross section imperfection, degree of axial restraint, load factor and load eccentricity) on fire resistance of cast iron columns. Validation of the finite element model was by comparison of the simulation results against six fire resistance tests, three on unprotected and three on protected cast iron columns. The results of this numerical parametric study indicate that the fire resistance of cast iron columns is generally higher than that of modern steel columns because the applied loads on cast iron columns are lower and cast iron columns have thicker sections than modern steel columns. Comparison of the numerical parametric study results with the calculation results using the steel column design method in EN1993-1-2 has found that the EN 1993-1-2 calculation results are generally on the safe side.

Abstract:
Manganese dioxide compounds are preferred curing agents for Polysulphide resins used as sealants in industry. These are required to have consistent setting characteristics and the investigation was initiated to characterise a number of proffered compounds of this type an to establish criteria by which an informed choice could be made of an optimum curing ages for a specific set of conditions. Several different chemical and physical properties were examined and critical parameters were established. A compound - sodium birnessite- was identified as a significant agent in the determination of curing properties. It was synthesised and its curing properties alone and in combination with other manganese dioxide compounds was evaluated. In an effort to find a specific reaction which might be used to characterise manganese dioxide curing agents it was decided to examine the classical reaction between these compounds and potassium chlorate. A literature search revealed major contradictions in the reported conditions under which potassium chlorate undergoes thermal decomposition as result of which it was decided to study the decomposition of potassium chlorate alone and in the presence of manganese dioxide and other catalysts. During this investigation a hitherto unreported high temperature structural change in potassium chlorate at 341° C was identified. The existence of this reversible change was confirmed by Powder Diffraction X-Ray analysis and an orthorhombic (near tetragonal) more open structure was assigned to it. It is suggested that the rapid decomposition of potassium chlorate in the solid state presence of catalysts is related to this change to a more open structure.

Abstract:
As the major electricity consumer, electrical machines play a key role for global energy savings. Machine manufacturers put considerable efforts into the development of more efficient electrical machines for loss reduction and higher power density achievements. A consolidated knowledge of the occurring losses in electrical machines is a basic requirement for efficiency improvements. This thesis deals with iron losses in electrical machines. The major focus is on the influences of the stator core magnetic material due to the machine manufacturing process, temperature influences, and the impact of inverter operation. The first part of the thesis gives an overview of typical losses in electrical machines, with focus put on iron losses. Typical models for predicting iron losses in magnetic materials are presented in a comprehensive literature study. A broad comparison of magnetic materials and the introduction of a new material selection tool conclude this part. Next to the typically used silicon-iron lamination alloys for electrical machines, this thesis investigates also cobalt-iron and nickel-iron lamination sheets. These materials have superior magnetic properties in terms of saturation magnetization and hysteresis losses compared to silicon-iron alloys. The second and major part of the thesis introduces the developed measurement system of this project and presents experimental iron loss investigations. Influences due to machine manufacturing changes are studied, including punching, stacking and welding effects. Furthermore, the effect of pulse-width modulation schemes on the iron losses and machine performance is examined experimentally and with finite-element method simulations. For nickel-iron lamination sheets, a special focus is put on the temperature dependency, since the magnetic characteristics and iron losses change considerably with increasing temperature. Furthermore, thermal stress-relief processes (annealing) are examined for cobalt-iron and nickel-iron alloys by magnetic measurements and microscopic analysis. A thermal method for local iron loss measurements is presented in the last part of the thesis, together with experimental validation on an outer-rotor permanent magnet synchronous machine.

Abstract: Thermal analysis is a widely used method for metallurgical process control and investigation of alloy composition of cast irons in foundry practice. A reliable means of rapidly evaluating the composition of cast irons is available by the Carbon-Equivalent technique, which is based on the change in thermal arrest temperature of the liquidus as the sample of molten cast iron freezes. The present work focuses on the development of a new sensor for thermal analysis, a dip-sensor, wich aims to contribute to more reliable determination of alloy composition during casting operation. Experiments were carried-out in different foundries by using both the dipsensor and the traditional capsule-sensor, which is normally used in foundry practice. The comparison of alloy compositions measured by these two techniques with analysis performed by Arc/Spark spectrometry has shown that generally the dip-sensor provides more reliable results. Thermal analysis conducted during cooling of molten cast iron in a unidirectional chill apparatus, by using a set of thermocouples, has also permitted the quantitative determination of solidification thermal variables, such as: transient metal/mold and mold/ambient heat transfer coefficients and tip cooling rates

Abstract:
The thermal performance of light steel framing (LSF) panels was the objective of this study. The study subject was panels used in the construction of two model houses located at Federal Technology University – Parana, built with materials commercially available in Brazil. The analysis was set with material properties from the manufacturer and in compliance with the Brazilian regulation, using the finite element method for a transient thermal analysis. The model validation was based on experimental tests available in the literature. Based on the validated model, the four panels have been analyzed. Two of the panels used PET wool in the cavity for insulation and the analysis was repeated with them replacing it for glass wool. A panel with no insulation was also analyzed to be used as reference. Based on the analysis results and the resistance reduction coefficients proposed by ABNT NBR 14323:2001, the resistance decrease of the studs due to the fire exposure and the panels resistance to fire were determined. Based on the obtained results, it can be affirmed that, depending on the applied load and the required Equivalent time of fire exposure, even the less protective configuration of the panels presented can be viable. The current study presented relevant information about the performance of LSF manufactured in Brazil when exposed to fire.

Abstract:
This work aims to present the results obtained with the use of induced magnetic field during the heat treatment of Nodular Cast Iron for speaker cores. For this study development, the chosen material is the nodular cast iron due to the low trading costs and ease of purchase on the market. Ninety samples of nodular cast iron were constructed, with different iron, silicon and carbon contents. Samples, when subjected to annealing, were also subjected to magnetic induction. The final temperature on the heat treatment was in the range of 900ºC to 920ºC, and the magnetic induction was in the range of 16000 to 20000 Gauss. The challenge of this work was in the fact that compositional changes in the nodular cast iron, allied to inclusions of non-magnetizable materials, modify for worse the performance of speaker cores. To obtain a structure that the magnetic field could permeate, the cast iron alloys were selected to eliminate, at most, the presence of non-magnetizable materials, and only then consider a heat treatment process with magnetic induction to make the material suitable for use in speaker cores. To improve the magnetic properties, an alignment of dipoles of the material, through induced magnetic field during annealing was intended. Annealing with induced magnetic field was carried out, observing the performance of the initial magnetic permeability of the samples, and subsequently measured with field saturation equipment The results were correlated with the obtained data from the use of the SAE 1020 steel, with the same conditions of use and laboratory tests. Metallographic and chemical composition analyses were carried out on the samples, and the correlation of these data with the magnetic properties was estmated. Also machinability of the thermal treated with magnetic induction nodular cast iron samples were analyzed and compared with the SAE 1020 steel. From the scientific point of view, one of the contributions of this work is the influence of induced magnetic field during the heat treatment of the samples, since it was possible to verify a significant gain in the magnetic properties of the speaker cores during the performance tests. Another contribution is the fact that gains correlated with the design of the product enable the use of cast iron as an economically viable and fully adjustable material to the high performance of subwoofers. As a result of this work, the possibility of using annealing with magnetic induction was presented as a way to increase the permeability of a material with high carbon content, in this particular case, the nodular cast iron. This research allows asserting that it is possible to develop speaker magnetic cores of nodular cast iron with high performance and also suggest that this technique can be applied to other applications where it is necessary to increase their magnetic performance.
