Abstract:
This study examined the effect on reading performance of a controversial treatment for a dysfunction of visual perception known as Scotopic sensitivity/lrlen Syndrome. The treatment, referred to as spectral modification, involved the use of colored transparent overlays for reading by four elementary school children in their actual school environments. The diagnostic, prescriptive and remediation procedures used in this study were originally developed by Helen Irlen, a California psychologist and researcher. Irlen conceptualized Scotopic Sensitivity Syndrome as a difficulty in visual processing of the printed page when perceived through full spectrum light. Spectral modification techniques were considered controversial in that they were employed prior to scientific validation of the syndrome. Previous research used pre-test/post-test experimental designs to test the effect of spectral modification on reading performance. The research problem addressed here was that the technique had not been systematically examined over time in the school setting, and from the practitioner's point of view. Sample selection involved pre-screening and screening phases. The pre-screening procedures of teacher recommendation and file review resulted in a pool of 26 children who were screened with the Irlen Differential Perceptual Interview Survey. Four subjects were selected who were in separate school settings, who demonstrated Irlen Syndrome to a significant extent, and whose profiles did not present variables which would compromise their participation. These four underwent comprehensive vision evaluations as a preliminary assessment procedure. A four-strand single-subject experimental design was used to generate data on subjects' rate and accuracy of oral reading, and comprehension of silent reading. Performance changes during experimental reading trials varied between the four, although three subjects exhibited positive performance change on one indicator. A supporting procedure was that subjects were pre and post-tested on the three performance indicators. Post-test results corroborated the changes demonstrated by three subjects Interview formats were employed to obtain qualitative data from teachers, parents, and the subjects themselves. Recommendations for practitioners intending to implement spectral modification techniques were generated from this data.

Abstract:
This survey research systematically collects Information on the long term effects of Irlen tinted lenses, from a specific diagnosed scotopic sensitive population. The survey used is based on Whiting's survey (1988), with variations and extensions made to increase information attained. Although the main focus of the survey is reading and related academic skills, other areas presenting new directions for further research, have also been included. 306 diagnosed scotopic sensitive Individuals, who had been using prescribed Irlen tinted lenses for a minimum of six months, were surveyed. 82.8 percent of the respondents indicated that they (or their child) had experienced great benefits from wearing Irlen tinted lenses. 70.1 percent Indicated that the greatest benefit had been in the area of reading. Cross-tabulations were made with length of time wearing the lenses, gender, and whether the respondent was filling in the questionnaire for themselves or for their child. The results of this descriptive research support Whiting's (1988), earlier findings. A review of the available literature and the Implications of these findings are discussed.

Abstract:
The Meares-Irlen Syndrome (MIS) is characterized by symptoms of visual stress and visual perceptual distortions, which often leads to impairment of reading ability. This condition, however, is minimized or eliminated with the use of transparencies (sheets of transparent plastic that are placed on the page). Studies show that the prevalence rates of MIS are high and vary between 12.5 to 20%. As in Brazil there are no records of these estimates, this study aimed to investigate the frequency of occurrence of MIS in students of elementary school, from a public school. The research was divided into five stages, and the first stage the teachers answered a questionnaire about reading from each of the students, then the teachers indicated those students who they thought had reading difficulties. The students nominated by the teachers, after the parents had authorized and signed the consent form, underwent then were evaluated for MIS using the method proposed by Irlen (1987) a routine ophthalmologic examination. Once students with MIS were identified, we asked the teachers to indicate those students who they thought had regular reading. So, two groups were formed, the clinical group (CG) composed of students with MIS and non clinical group (NCG) consisting of students, without complaints of reading difficulties. Students in the CG were then subjected to a computerized reading test without and then with transparency sheets (overlays). These data were then compared. Then the NCG was subjected to the same computerized reading assessment. The data from the CG were then compared to the NCG group. The results indicated that the frequency of occurrence of the MIS is high and it is consistent with findings in the literature. And that when individuals with MIS use transparencies(overlays), eye movement parameters and reading speed improved significantly and are equal to the standard presented by NCG.

Abstract:

Morrison, Rhonda. "Effect of Color Overlays on Reading Efficiency." 2011. https://scholarworks.umass.edu/open_access_dissertations/431.

Abstract:
Reading is a skill that unlocks the doors of learning and success. It is commonly accepted that reading is a foundational skill that plays a major role in a child's academic success. The history of teaching reading includes many theories about the development of reading, the source of reading difficulties, and interventions for remediation. A large body of research has demonstrated that reading difficulties stem from a phonological basis and interventions that target this area are generally beneficial in helping improving reading skills (National Reading Panel, 2000; Shaywitz, 2003; Stanovich, 1986). However, there are some who even with extensive intervention continue to struggle to read. Helen Irlen (2005) proposed that these people may experience visual-perceptual distortions when reading high-contrast text (black on white background). Irlen claims that symptoms of this disorder, termed Scotopic Sensitivity or Irlen Syndrome, can be alleviated by the use of color overlays or filters (tinted glasses). Research into the existence of this syndrome and the effectiveness of the overlays and filters to remediate reading problems has been inconsistent and criticized for lacking scientific rigor and heavy reliance on subject report of improvement. The present study seeks to evaluate differences that may exist in eye movements and reading fluency when subjects diagnosed with IS read text with and without color overlays. Participants were screened with the Irlen Reading Perceptual Scale (IRPS) to determine whether or not they suffered from the syndrome. From this screening, participants chose an overlay reported to alleviate distortions or discomfort they experienced when reading. They were then asked to read 18 passages under three conditions--with a clear overlay, with their chosen overlay, and with a random overlay--while their eye movements were recorded. Results indicated that participants showed no improvement in eye movement or reading fluency when they read passages with an optimum (chosen) overlay verses a clear overlay or a random overlay.

The near Infrared Light emitting diode (IRLED) for FM voice communication system is used near infrared radiation for carrier light source which be modulated by voice signal transmit from transmission port to received port by air, then the received signal demodulate back to the original voice signal. The system takes the FM for modulation method, which has larger signal-noise ratio, lower distortion and surrounding disturbance than AM and PM. The wireless communication is hot, such as blue tooth. Its advantage is wireless and unobstructive, but it easily interfere with each other and isn’t covert in density resident region. If infrared light is took as carrier light source, the problem can be solved. The article surveys how to use IRLED to setup the IR voice communication system and to use pre-emphasis and de-emphasis to lower the noise and improve the width and length of the transmission field.
