Abstract:
This thesis is a foresight study of alternative futures for Institutes of Technology within the Irish higher education system. The research focuses on the potential role and functions for the Institute of Technology sector in 2020. A strategic foresight methodology employing scenario design as the theoretical framework is applied. The general goals and contribution of the research are: to present foresight as a strategic methodology; to record developments and present a . snapshot' of the operating environment of the Institutes of Technology, including higher education trends, and agendas to 2010, and subsequently 2020; to present scenario narratives and alternative future paths for the Institutes of Technology to 2020; and, finally, to invite discussion on the future alternatives for the role and functions of the Institutes of Technology. The key purpose is to offer insights that may assist policy makers in choosing appropriate strategies for higher education in Ireland in 2020. The research identifies two significant challenges (critical uncertainties) relevant to the future determination of the role and functions of the Institutes of Technology for 2020, namely the structure of the higher education system and the relevance of teaching and/or research. As a consequence, four alternative scenarios are outlined: Stratocumulus, a dual higher education system consisting of Community Colleges that are aligned with and act as feeder colleges to the traditional research-orientated Universities; Altostratus, a stratified higher education system consisting of National Technological Universities and traditional research Universities; Altocumulus, a binary higher education system consisting of regionally aligned Institutes of Technology and traditional research-orientated Universities; and, Cirrostratus, a unitary higher education system consisting solely of Universities, where a hierarchy based on reputation has emerged in relation to research. Finally, there is a postscript discussion on factors relevant to choosing a particular scenario as a strategic option for higher education in Ireland to 2020.

Abstract:
The Irish Institute of Technology (hereinafter referred to as IoT) sector is poised to undergo a period of transformation, consolidation and system reconfiguration, to be brought about through a series of institutional mergers, collaborations and alliances. This research focuses on the Irish higher education (hereinafter referred to as HE) landscape, and in particular, on the journey of three groups of IoTs (hereinafter referred to as Alliances) as they plan to merge and subsequently apply to be re-designated as technological universities (hereinafter referred to as TUs). This research provides a contemporaneous account of how the Irish IoTs are organising themselves for merger and examines the substantial challenges which lie therein. By examining and comparing three Alliances which are undergoing a similar process but with varying degrees of success, this research explores the key factors which facilitate on one hand, and/or inhibit on the other, merger negotiations and the merger process in HE, both at a system and institutional level. This knowledge will be useful to policy makers and other higher education institutions (hereinafter referred to as HEIs), particularly in Ireland’s IoT sector, which is likely to experience a wave of mergers over the coming decade. It also contributes to the relatively scant body of literature on the nature of and the factors impacting upon the merger process in higher education, and of mergers in the Irish HE context. A qualitative study, employing a multiple case study approach, was adopted. Based upon a thematic analysis of data gathered from the three cases, this research identifies and categorises the key factors that are perceived to facilitate on the one hand, or inhibit on the other, the merger process in HE, both at a system and institutional level. A framework consisting of political, strategic, operational, emotive, historic and cultural factors is proposed, examined and discussed, and recommendations for both institutional and system level actors are provided. In addition, this research proposes a micro-political model which details the various phases through which HE mergers proceed, and argues that it is the macro and micro-political and emotive factors, rather than strategic or operational factors, which have the most powerful influence on the merger process.

Abstract:
This thesis considers the representation of the Shannon Scheme hydro-electric power station from 1924 to 1932, during the first Cumann na nGaedheal Government of the Irish Free State. The station was constructed by the German company Siemens and was the first large-scale building project carried out in the new state, starting in 1925. The semi-state Electricity Supply Board was formed by the Government to run the power station in 1927 and it began generating power in 1929, forming the basis for rural electrification after the Second World War.

Byrne, Pat. "Hurling together with technology : appropriation of the mobile phone in the everyday life of an Irish community group." Thesis, University of Edinburgh, 2016. http://hdl.handle.net/1842/30990.

Full text
Abstract:
This thesis examines how a new media technology becomes entrenched into the fabric of society – in particular how the mobile phone was incorporated into the existing communications landscape of a local voluntary community group: an Irish sports club. In the past, face-to-face interaction formed the basis of all social relations and strong local collectives were seen to provide a positive and supportive social environment, generating strong social capital. Today’s mediated communication enables the ‘networked individual’ who can choose when, where and with whom they share their lives. This has implications for the persistence and strength of local associations. Writers like Putnam (2000) have expressed concerns about the attenuation of local communities. However, others propose that communications technologies can provide new additional ways for individuals to link with each other in a ‘glocalised’ society (Hampton and Wellman, 2003) and this has the potential to overcome some of the limitations of the communicators not being in the same physical space. This thesis critically examines the applicability of these partly competing theses in the period in which mobile telephony became widely embedded in Irish society. Through 21 detailed interviews and a survey of 57 players, administrators and supporters, the study examines the choices made by club members in adopting and using the mobile phone. It further explores the changes they have made in their communication patterns and considers the implications of these for the cohesion and persistence of the community group as an entity and also the social capital it engenders. The study draws upon existing theories of human-technology interaction, in particular the Social Shaping of Technology perspective (Williams and Edge, 1996), to examine how club members weave their phone use into their everyday practices. Silverstone and Haddon’s (1996) Domestication approach, with its steps of appropriation, objectification and incorporation provide the detailed framework in mapping out this process. The study findings reveal that community members have all adopted the mobile phone and are heavy users of both text and voice calls. Membership of the sports club has eased the adoption process by providing examples of the artefact in use and a supporting environment when problems arise. Although use is now universal and intensive, there was a differential appropriation of the phone, with male club members being the first purchasers and females often being brought into the circle of users through a gifted or handed-down model. Users have devised strategies to manage their multiple overlapping sets of social relationship. They report that their use of technology has enabled a widening of their social circle while also bringing it closer, literally at the touch of a button. Contrary to the expectations of those analysts and policymakers who have foreseen technology causing local engagement to diminish, the clubs in my study have endured and are thriving; the social capital of their members is still strong and growing. This informs a critical reappraisal of such theories of community attenuation and the policies they have engendered.

Hannon, Michael. "Examining shifts in institutional positioning in the evolving Irish higher education system." Thesis, University of Bath, 2017. https://ethos.bl.uk/OrderDetails.do?uin=uk.bl.ethos.725404.

Full text
Abstract:
The thesis investigates a highly interesting, perennial issue in the contemporary development of higher education in times of massification and public sector reform: forces for organisational homogeneity and differentiation in the field, related shifts in organisational positioning of universities and of restructuration in the field. In particular, the thesis investigates higher education in Ireland between 2011 and 2016 and the impact of a national strategy for higher education launched in 2011. A specific focus of the research is on the intention to introduce a new institutional type, Technological Universities, to the field, and the early effects of this innovation upon organisational isomorphism. The emphasis upon the Institutes of Technology (IoTs) and their response to the reform imparts an element of originality to the thesis, and helps it to become a contribution to knowledge. From an organisational theory perspective, DiMaggio and Powell (1983) define organisational isomorphic change as a process of homogenisation, in which organisations operating within the same environment and under similar conditions, come to resemble one another. The study is informed by international examples of restructuring and institutional positioning. The thesis reviews a considerable amount of literature to discuss recent trends in higher education, and to analyse the literature on organisational isomorphism in general and the related literature on diversity and differentiation in higher education in particular. Further, substantial and creative efforts are made to design the empirical investigation including primary data analyses of interviews, the use of quantitative secondary data, and documentary analyses. This study is expected to be of particular interest to government, policy makers, scholars, and institutional leaders in the higher education area.

Gorham, Geraldine. "Taught postgraduate education in tourism and hospitality in an Irish Institute of Technology : student, graduate, educator and employer perspectives." Thesis, University of Sheffield, 2014. http://etheses.whiterose.ac.uk/7387/.

Full text
Abstract:
This thesis was guided by the research question ‘what is the perceived value of a taught postgraduate qualification in hospitality and tourism?’ The topic was justified, given the dearth of previous research in this area, and the researcher’s positionality as an educator on two taught MSc programmes, in the field of tourism and hospitality, in an institute of technology in the Republic of Ireland. In order to address this question, various stakeholder voices, comprising 15 current students on the two MSc programmes, 122 graduates, 11 educators and 2 employers were included in the primary research. This thesis included a review of secondary literature on education in the field of tourism and hospitality, an investigation into why graduates completed a taught MSc programme, and an assessment of their experiences during their programme of study and subsequent to graduation. The views and experiences of educators on the MSc programmes were explored, as were those of employers. A pragmatist theoretical lens and mixed research methods were employed to fulfil the objectives. Generally, student and graduate satisfaction with the programmes was high, though aspects of module delivery attracted suggestions for improvement. Graduates questioned the value attributed to formal education compared to industry experience. However, educators believed that whilst the MSc contributed to the overall professionalism of the tourism and hospitality industries, academic / industry dialogue was limited. Employers were positive about the role of formal education yet, also, emphasised the importance of attitude and interpersonal skills in the people centred industry that is tourism and hospitality. Educators, students and industry can benefit from the findings of this study.

Catena, Fontalba Manuel R. "Factors that affect motivation to study Spanish in Anglophone settings and the implications for the Irish Institute of Technology sector." Thesis, Queen's University Belfast, 2016. http://ethos.bl.uk/OrderDetails.do?uin=uk.bl.ethos.705905.

Full text
Abstract:
The purpose of this study is to analyse the factors that influence the type of motivation to study Spanish at tertiary level in a predominantly English speaking environment like the North West of Ireland, as language learning motivation may be impacted by economic reasons e.g., an economic recession. An additional purpose of this research is to assist educational reformers in the area of language education by generating relevant theory. Consequently, this study includes recommendations aimed at improving the rationalisation, efficacy, and quality of language education in the Irish Institute of Technology sector. Research indicates that native English speakers tend to be unmotivated language learners. Their tendency to monolingualism is influenced by the effects of globalisation and by the status of English as lingua franca. Nevertheless, there are economic and academic benefits to the mastery of modern languages. If fluency in English is the best form of linguistic capital that a non-Anglophone graduate can possess, knowledge of Spanish may be the best form of linguistic capital that Anglophones can obtain. Therefore, Irish monolingual students might be at a disadvantage position since the long-term sustainability of language education at tertiary level in rural Ireland is under economic pressure. This is a predominantly qualitative mixed methods research study. The analysis of the qualitative data is triangulated by a quantitative method. The findings suggest that language-learning motivation is impacted by several factors, for instance, the learners’ linguistic backgrounds, and their previous Irish language learning experience. However, there is insufficient evidence to report a significant economic impact. This research will be useful to academics, students and policy makers.

Hogan, Nicola Mary. "Sustainable information and communication technology (ICT) initiatives in UK and Irish universities and colleges : identifying and overcoming the barriers to implementation." Thesis, Anglia Ruskin University, 2017. http://arro.anglia.ac.uk/703153/.

Full text
Abstract:
Energy is one of the UK’s biggest commercial and environmental concerns. Despite government campaigns for everyone to play their part in minimising energy consumption, reports suggest an estimated 20–30% of energy generated is wasted. UK and Irish universities and colleges are no exception to this wastage. In an attempt to reduce CO2 emissions created by the extensive use of ICT equipment, JISC launched their Greening of ICT programme in 2009. The programme aimed at reducing ICT energy use in UK FHEs and its outcomes indicated that using fewer, more energy-efficient ICT resources, as infrequently as is practicable, is the optimal way of tackling energy waste. Two projects that did this were The Scotland Carbon and Energy Management Project and The UK SUSTE-TECH Project. This research bridges the gap in knowledge, (identifying the barriers to FHE institutions implementing sustainable ICT initiatives) and, over the course of three consecutive stages, employed positivistic and anti-positivistic paradigms, utilised inductive, abductive and deductive methodologies and employed comparative, correlative and evaluative research methods. Data were gathered using surveys and questionnaires. Seven barriers to sustainability were identified, with three of them (stakeholder engagement, lacking managers and cuts in funding) being widespread. Each of the barriers existed to various extents and most underpinned one another. However, overcoming the barriers is possible via the use of a smartphone web app named the Energy Detective web app. These findings validate this research’s theory and ultimately answers the research question and its sub-questions. This research demonstrates that, according to various FHE managers, the same barriers to sustainability exist in UK and Irish FHEs regardless of geographical location. However, through sufficient engagement with stakeholders, they can be overcome. A solution to the gap in knowledge was found but not without difficulty. Recommendations for the continuation of this research have been made.

Abstract:
Ireland is facing a great challenge in meeting renewable energy requirements, where due to past circumstances and decisions, the nation state is now heavily dependent on imported fossil fuels. Given the contribution of these imported fossil fuels to global climate change, price instability and supply insecurity, Ireland is under a pressing need to face up to the dilemma of an unsustainably fueled economy. This thesis explores how the EU policy process is helping Ireland to achieve the goals it has set with the EU and how these are being incorporated into the drivers of wind power development in Ireland. This research sought to uncover the dynamic of this relationship - the goodness of fit - through an assessment of three mechanisms of change, namely: Discourses, Directives and Finances, which were drawn on from the theoretical approach of Europeanisation. By doing a combined assessment of these three channels and their influence, this thesis provides a greater understanding of the ways in which the development of wind power in Ireland is influenced by the EU level. The thesis finishes with a concluding discussion on the importance of the national level in this process, as well as the importance of social and community engagement, which despite being previously seen as important, has to date largely manifested as a tokenistic gesture in Ireland. This thesis reasserts it as a common and crucial thread of the renewable energy transition that continuously arose as being pre-eminent during this study.

O'Sullivan, Timothy. "Irish Institutes of Technology in a time of change : a small-scale exploratory qualitative study examining the self-censorship of pro-organisational employee voice in a temporal context." Thesis, University of Sheffield, 2017. http://etheses.whiterose.ac.uk/19001/.

Full text
Abstract:
Upward communication of employee voice concerning suggestions and ideas is essential for success and learning within contemporary organisations. Research has identified that implicit responses by employees stifle voice, including pro-organisational change ideas, resulting in the loss of valuable organisational knowledge. The post-2008 Irish recession created an unprecedented period of change in the Irish higher education system. A document commonly known as the “Hunt Report” was introduced as the blueprint for proposed policy changes. This and subsequent policy documents in 2011/12 proposed substantial reform, requesting lecturers in Irish Institutes of Technology (IOTs) to engage in dialogue within their institutions and suggest how to consolidate the sector in a time-bound manner. This thesis examines the extent to which the self-censorship of pro-organisational voice by IOT lecturers is a consequence of current lived experiences and context. This small-scale exploratory qualitative study interviewed eight lecturers in IOTs during the consultation phase utilising a semi-structured interview process. Data was analysed utilising a thematic analysis approach. It employed implicit voice theories (IVTs) as a conceptual framework and a time and context sensitive lens of enquiry designed to enhance understanding. Lecturers reported cautiousness and silence due to underlying perceptions of negative consequences relating to voicing. This outcome is broadly predicted by IVT, yet notably an anomaly concerning voice pertaining to student welfare is highlighted. Lecturer discourse emphasises a deficiency in trust between themselves and management in addition to reporting feelings of despondency, fear and distance from the change process. Findings reflect challenges for organisational learning, change transition and development in the IOT sector and recommend the reinforcement of mutual trust-building initiatives amongst lecturers and management. These research findings contribute contemporary insights and understanding concerning latent voice and silence in Irish IOT settings and provide enhanced knowledge and awareness to those wishing to bring about practitioner-informed change.

Abdullah, Mohammed Abdulmuttaleb M. "Advancing iris biometric technology." Thesis, University of Newcastle upon Tyne, 2017. http://hdl.handle.net/10443/3976.

Full text
Abstract:
The iris biometric is a well-established technology which is already in use in several nation-scale applications and it is still an active research area with several unsolved problems. This work focuses on three key problems in iris biometrics namely: segmentation, protection and cross-matching. Three novel methods in each of these areas are proposed and analyzed thoroughly. In terms of iris segmentation, a novel iris segmentation method is designed based on a fusion of an expanding and a shrinking active contour by integrating a new pressure force within the Gradient Vector Flow (GVF) active contour model. In addition, a new method for closed eye detection is proposed. The experimental results on the CASIA V4, MMU2, UBIRIS V1 and UBIRIS V2 databases show that the proposed method achieves state-of-theart results in terms of segmentation accuracy and recognition performance while being computationally more efficient. In this context, improvements by 60.5%, 42% and 48.7% are achieved in segmentation accuracy for the CASIA V4, MMU2 and UBIRIS V1 databases, respectively. For the UBIRIS V2 database, a superior time reduction is reported (85.7%) while maintaining a similar accuracy. Similarly, considerable time improvements by 63.8%, 56.6% and 29.3% are achieved for the CASIA V4, MMU2 and UBIRIS V1 databases, respectively. With respect to iris biometric protection, a novel security architecture is designed to protect the integrity of iris images and templates using watermarking and Visual Cryptography (VC). Firstly, for protecting the iris image, text which carries personal information is embedded in the middle band frequency region of the iris image using a novel watermarking algorithm that randomly interchanges multiple middle band pairs of the Discrete Cosine Transform (DCT). Secondly, for iris template protection, VC is utilized to protect the iii iris template. In addition, the integrity of the stored template in the biometric smart card is guaranteed by using the hash signatures. The proposed method has a minimal effect on the iris recognition performance of only 3.6% and 4.9% for the CASIA V4 and UBIRIS V1 databases, respectively. In addition, the VC scheme is designed to be readily applied to protect any biometric binary template without any degradation to the recognition performance with a complexity of only O(N). As for cross-spectral matching, a framework is designed which is capable of matching iris images in different lighting conditions. The first method is designed to work with registered iris images where the key idea is to synthesize the corresponding Near Infra-Red (NIR) images from the Visible Light (VL) images using an Artificial Neural Network (ANN) while the second method is capable of working with unregistered iris images based on integrating the Gabor filter with different photometric normalization models and descriptors along with decision level fusion to achieve the cross-spectral matching. A significant improvement by 79.3% in cross-spectral matching performance is attained for the UTIRIS database. As for the PolyU database, the proposed verification method achieved an improvement by 83.9% in terms of NIR vs Red channel matching which confirms the efficiency of the proposed method. In summary, the most important open issues in exploiting the iris biometric are presented and novel methods to address these problems are proposed. Hence, this work will help to establish a more robust iris recognition system due to the development of an accurate segmentation method working for iris images taken under both the VL and NIR. In addition, the proposed protection scheme paves the way for a secure iris images and templates storage. Moreover, the proposed framework for cross-spectral matching will help to employ the iris biometric in several security applications such as surveillance at-a-distance and automated watch-list identification.

Abstract:
This paper present a pupil detection/segmentation algorithm for iris images based on Structure Tensor analysis. Eigenvalues of the structure tensor matrix have been observed to be high in pupil boundaries and specular reflections of iris images. We exploit this fact to detect the specular reflections region and the boundary of the pupil in a sequential manner. Experimental results are given using the CASIA-IrisV3-Interval database (249 contributors, 396 different eyes, 2,639 iris images). Results show that our algorithm works specially well in detecting the specular reflections (98.98% success rate) and pupil boundary detection is correctly done in 84.24% of the images.

Ponder, Christopher John. "A generic computer platform for efficient iris recognition." Thesis, University of Glasgow, 2015. http://theses.gla.ac.uk/6780/.

Full text
Abstract:
This document presents the work carried out for the purposes of completing the Engineering Doctorate (EngD) program at the Institute for System Level Integration (iSLI), which was a partnership between the universities of Edinburgh, Glasgow, Heriot-Watt and Strathclyde. The EngD is normally undertaken with an industrial sponsor, but due to a set of unforeseen circumstances this was not the case for this work. However, the work was still undertaken to the same standards as would be expected by an industrial sponsor. An individual’s biometrics include fingerprints, palm-prints, retinal, iris and speech patterns. Even the way people move and sign their name has been shown to be uniquely associated with that individual. This work focuses on the recognition of an individual’s iris patterns. The results reported in the literature are often presented in such a manner that direct comparison between methods is difficult. There is also minimal code resource and no tool available to help simplify the process of developing iris recognition algorithms, so individual developers are required to write the necessary software almost every time. Finally, segmentation performance is currently only measurable using manual evaluation, which is time consuming and prone to human error. This thesis presents a completely novel generic platform for the purposes of developing, testing and evaluating iris recognition algorithms which is designed to simplify the process of developing and testing iris recognition algorithms. Existing open-source algorithms are integrated into the generic platform and are evaluated using the results it produces. Three iris recognition segmentation algorithms and one normalisation algorithm are proposed. Three of the algorithms increased true match recognition performance by between two and 45 percentage points when compared to the available open-source algorithms and methods found in the literature. A matching algorithm was developed that significantly speeds up the process of analysing the results of encoding. Lastly, this work also proposes a method of automatically evaluating the performance of segmentation algorithms, so minimising the need for manual evaluation.

Abstract:
The purpose of this research is to ascertain potential iris scan data variations from near infrared waves derived from fluorescent illumination. Prior studies of iris data variances from infrared wave interference of halogen, incandescent, and sunlight with iris cameras suggest that similar changes may exist under near infrared wavelengths from fluorescent light. The concern is that the fluorescent energy emission may interfere with the near infrared detection of an iris camera. An iris camera is used to measure human eye characteristics known as biometrics. If such infrared emission is statistically significant, then it can alter the validity of the iris scan data. The experiment utilized nine hundred forty-five (945) scans from sixty-three (63) subjects. Measured results showed increased heat from ambient fluorescent illumination does not statistically alter the biometric readings of human eyes. The test results fail to reject that data loss will not occur as heat is increased in the ambient fluorescent light source.

The exponential growth in the use of the Internet as well as the emergence of new types of applications has increased the network’s constraints in terms f security. Fort the last several years, biometric techniques have proven their applicability and reliability in providing secure access to shared resources in different domains. Furthermore, software agents and multi-agent systems (MAS) have evidently been efficient in resolving several problems in network. Therefore, the aim of this research is to propose a model “IrisCryptoAgentSystem” (ICAS) that is based on a biometric method for authentication using the iris of the eyes and an asymmetric cryptography method using “Rivest-Shamir-Adleman” (RSA) in an agent-based architecture. This model should provide secure access to information and ensure the protection of confidential information. Therefore, our work focuses on the development of new methods in biometric autheitcation in order to provide greater efficiency in the ICAS model. We introduce pretopological aspects in the development of the indexed hierarchy to classify DHVA templates. Our approach aims to improve the existing methods for the localization of the external and the internal edges of the iris

Abstract:
Due to technological convergence, mobile devices are becoming more and more powerful and integrate more peripherals including CMOS image sensors. Offer a solution to facilitate the use of these mobile devices is one of the objectives of this research work. How can this system authenticate our identity using biometrics and how can it communicate with us as simply as possible? To answer these questions, we focused on the design level of the pixel on the imaging matrix architecture to add new functions. We propose an iris recognition system that improves security and facilitates the use of mobile devices ; we examined a man-machine interface based on gesture recognition. First, we will evaluate Photogate active-pixel sensors (APS) ; from their modeling up to pixel characterization. A test vehicle using HCMOS9i technology enabled us to compare 24 Photogate pixels. We will examine the work concerning the integration of an image stabilizer function on an image sensor, a key feature for mobile devices. Then we describe our work on a low-cost iris recognition video system. This work led to a new strategy for acquiring good-quality images using video capture techniques. To highlight the results of our study, we built a demonstrator to confirm the automatic detection and acquisition of irises that operates in real-time. In the last part, the problems of the man-machine interface where a touchscreen is replaced by a viewing system using two sensors are considered

Abstract:
abstract: "Romantic Cyber-Engagement" offers a new type of dissertation organized around three projects that combine the core values of the Digital Humanities with the hypertext tradition of scholarly pursuits in the field of Romanticism. The first of the three Digital Humanities contributions is to the profession. "A Resource for the Future: The ICR Template and Template Guide" articulates a template for the construction and operation of an advanced conference in Romantic studies. This part of the project includes the conference web site template and guide, which is publicly available to all interested organizations; the template guide includes instructions, tutorials, and advice to govern modification of the template for easier adaptation for future conferences. The second project, "Collaborative Literature Projects in the Digital Age: The Frankenstein Project" is a functional pedagogical example of one way to incorporate Digital Humanities praxis as an interactive part of a college course. This part of the dissertation explains the "Frankenstein Project," a web site that I created for an undergraduate critical theory course where the students contributed various critical approaches for sections of the novel Frankenstein; or, The Modern Prometheus. The final project, "'[W]hat they half-create, / And what perceive': The Creation of a Hypertext Scholarly Edition of 'Tintern Abbey;'" is a critical approaches section in which I created an interactive web site that focused on the primary work, "Lines Written a Few Miles above Tintern Abbey: On Revisiting the Banks of the Wye during a Tour, July 13, 1798." This advanced, multimodal site allows viewers to examine various critical approaches to each section of the primary work, and the viewer/reader can interactively engage the text in dialogue by contributing their own interpretation or critical approach. In addition to the three products and analysis generated from this dissertation, the project as a whole offers an initial Digital Humanities model for future dissertations in discipline of English Literature.

Biometrics has been applied to the personal recognition popularly and it becomes more important. The iris recognition is one of the biometric identification methods, and the technology can provide the accurate personal recognition. As early as 2004, the German airport in Frankfurt began to use the iris identification system. By the iris scan identification, the iris information is linked to the passport data database, and the personal identity is functional. In recent years, the iris identification is used widely and increasingly in personal identifications. Even the mobile phone also begin to use the iris identification system, and the importance of biometrics gains more and more attention. The traditional iris recognition technology mainly transforms the iris feature region into a square matrix by using the polar coordinate method, and the square matrix is transformed to the feature codes, and then the signature is used to the feature match finally. The difference between the proposed and the traditional iris recognition systems is : to avoid the eyelid and eyelash interferences, the retrieved iris region in the proposed design only locates near the pupil around the ring area and the lower half of the iris area for recognitions. On the other side, the traditional iris identification uses the feature code matching technology; however, the proposed method uses the image feature matching technology, i.e. the scale-invariant feature transform (SIFT) method. The SIFT uses the local features of the image, and it keeps the feature invariance for the changes of rotation, scaling, and brightness. The SIFT also maintains a certain degree of stability for the change of the perspective affine transformation and noises. Therefore, it is very suitable that the SIFT technology is applied to iris feature matching. In the proposed design, the accuracy of the iris recognition is 95%. Compared with other methods by using the same database and the similar SIFT technology as the matching method, the recognition performance of the proposed design is suitable.

Abstract:
This research focused on the evaluation of iris recognition on post-mortem subjects. It was to determine if iris image captures were suitable from post-mortem subjects and if the captures contained the features required to be used in recognition scenarios. One commercially available iris camera was used, the IriShield USB MK2120U. In order to complete this research, it was first necessary to obtain images from subjects that contain the proper features, including sharpness, pupil size, and image quality. The images were captured during three different conditions that would be possible to find under real-world circumstances. The first condition was as the decedent came into the coroner’s office before the vitreous fluid was sampled from the eyes. The second condition was after the vitreous fluid was sampled from the deceased. Sampling vitreous fluid is a common autopsy procedure. This second condition would also be similar to a subject with a punctured eye. The third condition was after replacing the volume of vitreous fluid with saline solution. Replacing the vitreous with saline restored the round shape to the eye. This study found that high quality images can be captured from a post-mortem eye and that matching images across conditions results in positive identification.

Introduction: It has long been appreciated that vision is limited by both optical and neural factors, but that only optical factors can be easily and effectively corrected for. Chief among these optical factors are spherical refractive error and astigmatism. Recent advances in wavefront technique make it possible to reduce postoperative order aberrations (HOAs) via modern refractive surgery such as wavefront guided laser in situ keratomileusis (WG LASIK). The goal of this research is to clarify an important question that has implications for both clinical and applied vision in aviation. “How important is iris registration and femtosecond laser (Intralase) technology in postoperative HOAs after WG LASIK?” Purpose: (1) To quantify the cyclotorsion occurring between upright sitting (measurement) position and supine (surgical) position in Taiwanese. (2) To compare the HOAs change after WG LASIK with iris registration (IR) and without iris registration (NIR) system. (3) To compare HOAs change after WG LASIK using a corneal flap with Moria microkenatome (M2) group and Intralase group based on the Hartmann-Shack wavefront aberrometer. Methods: (1) To determine the amount of cyclotorsion of eyeball between the measurement and surgery in 105 eyes (54 patients). (2) Twenty-eight eyes from 14 patients (refraction range -2.50D~-7.50D) treated by W G LASIK with IR group (12 eyes) or NIR group (16 eyes). Root-mean-square (RMS) of coma-like aberration, spherical aberration, total 3rd to 6th order HOAs were compared between the two groups. (3) M2 group (18 eyes) and Intralase group (12 eyes) whose degrees of myopia were-1.00 to –8.00 diopters (D) were treated with W G LASIK. Root-mean-square (RMS) of coma-like aberration, spherical aberration, total 3rd to 6th order HOAs were compared between the two groups. Result: (1) For all 105 eyes, mean ± standard deviation (SD) cyclotorsional deviation was 2.6 ± 2.0 degrees (right eye 2.4 ± 3.8 degrees counterclockwise, left eye 2.7 ± 2.9 degrees clockwise). (2)Compared with preoperative aberrations, both IR and NIR group showed postoperative decreased of total aberration (p<0.01) and increased of HOAs, vertical coma, and spherical aberration (p<0.01). Compared with NIR group, significant reduction of HOAs, vertical coma, and spherical aberration was observed in IR group. (3) There were no significant differences in RMS of coma-like aberration, spherical aberration, total 3rd to 6th order HOAs between M2 and Intralase group. Conclusions: (1) The difference of cyclotorsional eye movement was assessed significantly in the transition from seated to supine position with IR technology. (2) The WG LASIK with IR system significantly decreased postoperative induction of the amount of HOAs, vertical coma, and spherical aberration. (3) Although postoperative visual acuity improved significantly in Intralase group, there was no significant difference in all items of HOAs between the M2 group and Intralase group. Further study of multiple variants affecting postoperative HOAs after Intralase flap creation is mandatory. In summary, our study demonstrated that using IR system is essential element for reduction of postoperative HOAs after WG LASIK.
