Abstract:
How does the question of grace--its reality or not--affect self-understanding and moral aspiration? Søren Kierkegaard believed that conviction of grace, or of divine kindness at the heart of things, is crucial for human flourishing. This notion serves as a lever for critical reflection on perspectives concerning the secular turn Charles Taylor and others describe. The essay contrasts Kierkegaard’s thought with Iris Murdoch, Philip Kitcher, and co-authors Hubert Dreyfus and Sean Dorrance Kelly. Each of the secular perspectives, it turns out, maps onto a different one of three “stages” of human development that precede Kierkegaard’s highest, or Christian, form of existence. This provides an angle for assessing secularism as reflected in three contrasting accounts. Kierkegaard’s elaboration of the Christian ideal, and the shortfalls he saw in earlier stages, become the basis for a “justification” of grace as a premise for the well-lived life.

Abstract:
In Deep Learning, recent works show that neural networks have a high potential in the field of biometric security. The advantage of using this type of architecture, in addition to being robust, is that the network learns the characteristic vectors by creating intelligent filters in an automatic way, grace to the layers of convolution. In this paper, we propose an algorithm “FMnet” for iris recognition by using Fully Convolutional Network (FCN) and Multi-scale Convolutional Neural Network (MCNN). By taking into considerations the property of Convolutional Neural Networks to learn and work at different resolutions, our proposed iris recognition method overcomes the existing issues in the classical methods which only use handcrafted features extraction, by performing features extraction and classification together. Our proposed algorithm shows better classification results as compared to the other state-of-the-art iris recognition approaches.

Abstract:
Simone Weil's ideas proved fundamental for Iris Murdoch, opening up a difficult path of thought for one rooted in the British philosophical tradition in the 1950s (Sim 1985, Bok 2005, Lovibond 2011a, Panizza 2022a, Mac Cumhaill and Wiseman 2022). Grasping the Weilian-inspired moral theory of attention sketched by Iris Murdoch is a prerequisite for comprehending the development of her moral ideas (Panizza 2015, Broackes 2012) and the form they may take in her literary writings (Griffin 1993, Morgan 2006). This paper argues that we can read an expression of Simone Weil in Iris Murdoch's novels which articulate her notions of grace and gravity, but also convey the Weilian insights that shape Murdoch's moral perfectionism. It investigates three of Murdoch's well-known male protagonists, i.e., Bradley Pearson, Charles Arrowby and Hilary Burde, so as to comprehend how their moral failures relate to a defective implementation of the concepts of love and attention as theorised by Simone Weil as leading to goodness. Hence, it offers a new examination of the way in which the Murdochian literary staging of inattention as a cause of moral deficiency reveals its Weilian-based ethics of attention.

Abstract:
Abstract The data from an Iris flower database is studied. The Iris database is the most commonly used database for machine learning algorithms. The Iris database was developed by Ronald Aylmer Fisher in 1936. The Iris database has 150 records in three categories: Iris Sentosa, Iris Versicolor and Iris Virginic. The database has four attributes: sepal length, sepal width, petal length and petal width. For the machine learning algorithm, 150 Iris flower databases are used. Of the 150 Iris in the Iris database, 80% are used as the training set and the remaining 20% Iris as the test set. In machine learning, to perform classification and discrimination is a complicated and difficult thing. In this study, a grey relation grade is used to extract the main features of the Iris flower and a Binary Tree [1] is used to classify the Irises. The results show that for the same specific attributes, grey relation grade extracts the main attributes and can be used in combination with a binary for classification.

Abstract:
Purpose: The purpose of this study was to determine the distribution of iris colour and its relationship to myopia. Methods: A multi-centered, multi-disciplined, cross-sessional study was conducted From March 2021 to December 2021. 300 individuals ranging in age from 11 to 25 years were selected through non-probability purposive sampling technique. All the patients had a maximum of 6 hours of screen time. Mild, moderate and severe degree of myopia was included. All subjects were examined for refraction, and slit lamp examination was performed to compare slit lamp photos to an iris colour grading scheme. Results: Of the 300 subjects 188 (62.66 %) of the participants were female, with mild 70(23 %), moderate 51(17%), and severe 67 (22.33 %) myopia, while 112 (37.33 %) of the participants were male, with mild 45(15 %), moderate 40(13.33%), and severe 27(9 %) myopia. 90% of the participants in the study had Grade 3, 4 and 5 iris color.Subjects with darker iris colors had more myopic refractive error. Study results indicate patients with Grade 5 iris color had a higher likelihood of becoming myopic (p 0.001). Conclusion: Darker iris color was linked to higher myopia-related refractive errors, even when other known myopia-related risk variables were taken into account. Abstract:
There are many textural elements that can be found in the human eye, including Fuchs’ crypts, Wolfflin nodules, pigment spots, contraction furrows and conjunctival melanosis. Although iris surface features have been well-studied in populations of European ancestry, the worldwide distribution of these traits is poorly understood. In this paper, we develop a new method of characterizing iris features from photographs of the iris. We then apply this method to a diverse sample of East Asian, European and South Asian ancestry. All five iris features showed significant differences in frequency between the three populations, indicating that iris features are largely population dependent. Although none of the features were correlated with each other in the East and South Asian groups, Fuchs’ crypts were significantly correlated with contraction furrows and pigment spots and contraction furrows were significantly associated with pigment spots in the European group. The genetic marker SEMA3A rs10235789 was significantly associated with Fuchs’ crypt grade in the European, East Asian and South Asian samples and a borderline association between TRAF3IP1 rs3739070 and contraction furrow grade was found in the European sample. The study of iris surface features in diverse populations may provide valuable information of forensic, biomedical and ophthalmological interest.

Abstract:
108 Background: IRIS (irinotecan plus S-1) plus bevacizumab (IRIS/Bev) is one of the standard chemotherapies in Japan for metastatic colorectal cancer (mCRC) as the first-line or second-line therapy. The most frequent non-hematological adverse event of IRIS was diarrhea. Hange-shashin-to (HST) is a Kampo medicine which is used in Japan for the treatment of gastritis, stomatitis, and diarrhea. We conducted this study to evaluate the usefulness of HST to prevent diarrhea in patients with mCRC receiving IRIS/Bev as the second-line therapy. Methods: This trial was designed as a multicenter, randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled study. We administrated HST 2.5g or placebo PO t.i.d. x 3 months from the first treatment course of IRIS/Bev. The primary endpoint is proportion of ≥grade 3 diarrhea assessed by CTCAE v4.0. This study is registered with UMIN-CTR, number UMIN000012276. Results: Between Jan 1, 2014 and Mar 31, 2017, 59 patients from 11 institutes in Japan were randomly assigned to receive HST (n = 28, Group H) or placebo (n = 29, Group P). The proportions of ≥grade 3 diarrhea was 10.7% in Group H and 13.8% in Group P (p = 1.00). The other major adverse events of ≥grade 3 in Group H vs Group P were fatigue (3.6% vs 10.3%), anorexia (14.3% vs 10.3%), and nausea (0.0% vs 3.4%). The overall response rate was 13.6% in Group H vs 7.7% in Group P (p = 0.65). There were not statistically significant differences in median progression-free survival (mPFS), median time to treatment failure (mTTF), and median overall survival (mOS) between Group H and Group P ( mPFS 7.9 vs 5.9 months; p = 0.35; mTTF 3.8 vs 5.6; p = 0.466; mOS 17.0 vs 15.3 months; p = 0.750). Conclusions: Prophylactic HST could not reduce the severity of diarrhea during IRIS/Bev. The update analysis of anti-tumor efficacy showed that IRIS/Bev had promising survival benefit but there is not statistically significant difference between HST and placebo. Abstract:
Purpose. Iris biological features such as surface features and profile characteristics reflected the development of iris stroma and microvessels. Iris vessels and microcirculation are still lack of effective detection methods, and we can directly observe only the iris surface biological characteristics. This cross-sectional study evaluated the association between iris surface biological features and corneal biomechanics in young adults with myopia. Methods. We recruited 152 patients with myopia aged ≥18 years, from the Eye Hospital of Wenzhou Medical University, who had complete Corneal Visualization Scheimpflug Technology (Corvis ST) data and graded iris surface features. Iris surface features included crypts, furrows, and color measured from digital slit lamp images. The biomechanical properties of the cornea were assessed using Corvis ST. Only 1 eye of each participant was randomly selected for analysis. Associations between the iris surface features and corneal biomechanics were analyzed using linear regression models. The grade of iris crypts, furrows, and color and corneal biomechanical parameters measured with Corvis ST was the main outcome measures. Results. The iris crypts were significantly associated with deflection amplitude at the first applanation (A1 DLA, β = 0.001 , P = 0.013 ), A1 delta arc length (A1 dArcL) ( β = − 0.001 , P = 0.01 ), maximum delta arc length (dArcLM) ( β = − 0.004 , P = 0.03 ), and stiffness at the first applanation (SP-A1) ( β = − 2.092 , P = 0.016 ). The iris furrows were only associated with integrated radius ( β = − 0.212 , P = 0.025 ). Iris color was found not related with corneal biomechanical parameters measured via Corvis ST. Conclusions. Iris surface features were associated with corneal biomechanical properties in myopic eyes; more iris crypts were associated with lower corneal stiffness while more extensive furrows were related with higher corneal stiffness. Iris crypts and furrows may provide useful information on corneal biomechanical properties in myopic eyes.

Abstract:
During the past few decades, an extraordinary amount of public attention has been given to controversies regarding how reading is being taught, is not being taught, or how it should be taught. To address reading concerns, publishers have developed commercial reading programs which provide teachers with materials on a variety of reading levels for use in the classroom. These materials allow teachers to match the reading levels of students with the appropriate reading books. Within a typical classroom, the reading ability of the students will range from below grade level to above grade level. In order to accurately select books that are on a student's reading level, a teacher must assess the student's reading skills. Betts (1950) developed a simple technique for using graded reading books to evaluate children's reading levels. The technique, which he called an "Informal Reading Inventory," involved selecting a short passage from grade level readers several grade levels below and above the student's grade level. Next, several comprehension questions were written for each passage. The student was to read the passages aloud and to answer the questions. Results of the oral reading and the comprehension questions are analyzed to determine the student's reading level.

Abstract:
Design: Studio retrospettivo osservazionale.
Abstract Increased insulin receptor substrate 2 expression is associated with steatohepatitis and altered lipid metabolism in obese subjects Objective: The aim of this study was to evaluate whether dysregulation of molecules involved in FOXO1 dependent insulin signalling in the liver is associated with de novo lipogenesis (DNL) and altered lipid metabolism in severely obese subjects. Design: Observational retrospective study. Subjects: We considered 71 obese subjects (age 20-68 years; BMI>40 kg/m2 or BMI>35 kg/m2 in the presence of metabolic complications) classified into three groups according to liver histology: normal liver (n=12), simple steatosis (n=27), and non-alcoholic steatohepatitis (NASH; n=32). Key nodes in insulin signalling and gene expression of molecules implicated in insulin dependent glucoregulatory pathway and DNL were evaluated by quantitative real-time PCR and Western blotting. Results: Patients with steatosis had decreased phosphorylation of the insulin kinase AKT1, mediating insulin receptor signalling, and the transcription factor FOXO1, which was therefore more active mediating insulin resistance at transcriptional level. Despite no changes in insulin receptor substrate (IRS)1 mRNA levels, the mRNA and protein levels of the FOXO1 target IRS2 increased progressively with the severity of steatosis from normal liver to NASH. IRS2 expression was correlated with the severity of steatosis, dyslipidemia, and liver damage. In patients with NASH, upregulation of IRS2 was associated with preserved activation of AKT2, mediating the stimulating effect of insulin on DNL, and over-expression of its target sterol regulatory element binding protein 1c (SREBP1c), inducing DNL at transcriptional level. Both FOXO1 and SREBP1c overexpression converged on upregulation of glucokinase, providing substrates for DNL, in NASH patients. Conclusion: Differential regulation of IRS1 and IRS2 and of their downstream effectors AKT1 and AKT2 is consistent with upregulation of FOXO1 and may justify the paradoxical state of insulin resistance relative to the glucoregulatory pathway and augmented insulin sensitivity of the liporegulatory pathway typical of steatosis and the metabolic syndrome in obese patients.

The subject of this study is to probe the impact of IRS assisted teaching system on students’ learning effectiveness in order to understand the effectiveness when applying Information Technology to social studies. “Quasi- experimental design” is used for the research. The sample population is from four sixth-grade classes (2 classes as the Experiment Group 52 persons and 2 classes as the Control Group 53 persons) in an elementary school located in Xinzhuang Dist , New Taipei City. The students in Experiment Group had took the IRS test three times within four weeks(from March 2,2015 to March 27,2015) and in a total of 12 experimental social studies curriculums. On the contrary, the control group had took the traditional test three times within four weeks. The pre-test were the average of social studies period, end of the written assessment in the sixth semester (first semester 103).All students were requested to take the pre-test before the course, the post-test after the course and the Social Studies learning achievement test. The analysis result is based on the data which is quantitatively analyzed by descriptive statistics and inferential statistics. Research results: 1. On terms of academic achievement, These is no significant difference in learning achievement between IRS test and traditional test. Furthermore, different gender identities, different ability levels and no matter taking the after-school tutoring classes have no significant difference. 2. To learn in terms of attitude, except confidence, IRS assisted teaching system helps students to achieve the significant improvement in the perspective of learning attitude in the interest, the average of faith and the attitude scale. In addition, the reaction from the students that the students love the way IRS quiz, find it interesting and fun. Social studies into the IRS helps to enhance students' social studies learning attitude.

During math teaching process, it must research the relation between each concept of unit. The most convenient is taking test. The purpose of this research is making a set of topics of decimal to fraction conversion with reliability and validity, analyze the results of the test, and form the structural picture through IRS and then explore the 4th grade students of elementary school cognitive structure in decimal to fraction conversion concepts. I hope to gain the message from the item relative structural picture of the 4th grade students of elementary school in decimal to fraction conversion concepts. Then according to the results and suggestions, it could be the references of teaching and curriculum designing in the future. According to the information from IRS, it shows: (1) “The test of decimal to fraction conversion for the 4th grade students of elementary school” is not only a test with reliability and validity, but also a practical test. (2) For the professional point of view, it should be equal between the testand IRS by giving the same structure test questions; however, the result from students’ evaluation shows the different cognition. (3) The concept develop sequence of students start from “ decimal fraction to mixed fraction” to “mixed decimal to mixed fraction” , and finally develop to “mixed decimal to improper fraction.” (4) The number of fractional part effect students’ cognition when students answer the questions. (5) The concept of tenths decimal or hundredths decimal to fraction conversion is not the real reason to students’ cognition to resolve questions. (6) Students who are given test not familiar with some concepts of hundredths decimal to fraction conversion, such as “when hundreds decimal place is zero, it will not effect a result no matter the fraction will be reduced or not”. Those concepts need the upper level cognitive development for students.

Abstract:
Abstract Anti-Jansenist Purges and Irish Clerics The debate about grace, which divided the Counter-Reformation Church and pitted Jesuits against Jansenists, would have been a mere affaire de cures had the European ancien regime distinguished theology and politics. This was emphatically not the case. In France, the Gallican church was a monument to the interpenetration of the ecclesiastical and the civil domains. The French king had a particular duty to uphold its privileges and protect true religion.2 In the early eighteenth century it mattered a great deal to Louis XIV that his Gallican church was still divided over the grace question, particularly as the politics of grace had penetrated the politics of state. Indeed, by this time the original theological debate had become profoundly politicised and religious language was used to articulate the claims of conflicting authorities, secular as well as ecclesiastical. The theology of grace favoured by the Jesuits was associated with monarchical centralization as well as with papal authority and episcopal hegemony. The Jansenists ‘ theology of grace, on the other hand, attracted the support of more traditionally-minded Gallicans in general, a few episcopal devotees of the Doctor of Hippo, a number of lower clergy Richerists and those institutions of the French ancien regime which traditionally opposed monarchical centralization. The parlement of Paris was foremost among these. The early eighteenth-century focus for the conflict of authorities was the papal bull, Unigenitus. Published by Clement XI in 1713 at Louis XIV ‘s behest, it was part of Louis ‘s strategy of rapprochement with the papacy. As such it was motivated by changing circumstances in international diplomacy and represented a marked change from the Gallicanism of the earlier part of his reign.

Abstract:
Abstract Chapter 5 suggests that the WASP persona movie studio executives created for film star Grace Kelly (later known as Princess Grace of Monaco) was meant to diminish the usual associations of her background. These Famine-Catholic Philadelphia roots are explored through the neglected drama of her Pulitzer Prize-winning uncle, George Kelly. The symbiosis between ‘whiteness’ and the images of women deployed to sell beauty, fashion, and film industry products is well documented. Such links, overlooked in male-centred accounts of the ‘whitening’ of Irish America, are used to analyse Kelly’s impact. In Dial M for Murder, Kelly performs a woman who duplicitously performs the role of a proper English wife, for which she was coached by Alfred Hitchcock. They shared a surprisingly similar background: both were, by origin, Catholic-Irish outsiders to elite WASP culture who learned to ‘pass’. Kelly’s wedding to Prince Rainier of Monaco in 1956 was one of the largest international media events of that decade. To Catholic-Irish Philadelphia it constituted the rejoinder of a ‘hometown girl’ to the 1953 spectacular of Elizabeth II’s coronation. Grace’s globally broadcast ascent to fairy-tale whiteness paved the way for ‘America’s royals’, the Kennedy dynasty, as well as broader Irish America’s assimilation. However, centuries of Gothic literature holds that where there is a fair princess in a castle, there is soon to be horror, as the epilogue unfolds.

Abstract:
By charting various manifestations of Irish republican sympathy in Newfoundland from the late eighteenth century into the early twentieth century, this chapter highlights the historical memory of grievance among the Newfoundland Irish. The Fenian scare of the late 1860s in Port de Grave, Conception Bay provides the starting point for a wide-ranging survey that extends from elite concern over Ribbonism among early Irish Catholic settlers in the Avalon Peninsula to sympathy for the 1916 rebellion among their descendants. The chapter argues that while most Newfoundland Irish were not explicitly republican, expressions of sympathy with the goals of Irish republican movements reveal that many were not supporters of the British Empire.

Abstract:
A deterministic analysis of the IRIS safety features has been carried out by means of the best-estimate code RELAP (ver. RELAP5 mod3.2). First, the main system components were modeled and tested separately, namely: the Reactor Pressure Vessel (RPV), the modular helical-coil Steam Generators (SG) and the Passive (natural circulation) Emergency Heat Removal System (PEHRS). Then, a preliminary set of accident transients for the whole primary and safety systems was investigated. Since the project was in a conceptual phase, the reported analyses must be considered preliminary. In fact, neither the reactor components, nor the safety systems and the reactor signal logics were completely defined at that time. Three “conventional” design basis accidents have been preliminary evaluated: a Loss Of primary Flow Accident, a Loss Of Coolant Accident and a Loss Of Feed Water accident. The results show the effectiveness of the safety systems also in LOCA conditions; the core remains covered for the required grace period. This provides the basis to move forward to the preliminary design.

Abstract:
Overheated rail-road car wheels and bearings known as hot boxes, are a major threat for any railway operation. A hot box can lead to fractures of axle journals and might cause grave accidents if not detected in time. This paper proposes to automatically detect, track and count the hot boxes in infrared thermal image sequences (IRTIs), acquired with two infrared camera types, cooled camera (CC) and uncooled camera (UC), through a modified YOLO-v4 framework. In-service experiments have been carried out on freight and passenger trains. The training and testing sets are generated, including original and augmented IRTIs with a resolution of 448 × 239 pixels for CC and 640 × 240 pixels for the UC. The trained models, titled Y-CC and Y-UC, perform in a promising way in regards to detection precision, recall and F1-score

Abstract:

Redmond, Patrick B. "Irish-type Zn-Pb deposits in the context of global zinc supply." In Irish-type Zn-Pb deposits around the world. Irish Association for Economic Geology, 2023. http://dx.doi.org/10.61153/wkky6664.

Abstract:
Zinc is the fourth most consumed metal globally and its corrosion resistance properties contribute significantly to the longevity, reliability, and sustainability of construction and infrastructure projects, vehicle manufacturing, and green technologies. By extending the lifespan of these assets and promoting durability, zinc supports the goals of the green transition by reducing resource consumption, minimizing waste, and enhancing overall environmental performance. Four broad ore deposit types account for over 90% of global zinc production and known resources. These are, in order of importance, shale-hosted massive sulphide (‘VHMS’) deposits, volcanogenic massive sulphide (‘VMS’) deposits, carbonate replacement (‘CRD’) deposits, and Irish-type / Mississippi-valley type (‘IT’ / ‘MVT’) deposits. Each ore deposit type contains a relatively small number of world-class ore deposits which are characterized by their large size, high-grades, and economic viability. These world class deposits represent the most significant de-posits within their respective deposit types and generally attract substantial attention and investment from mining and exploration companies. The Irish Midlands basin is a globally significant area for zinc exploration and mining and discoveries over the past 60 years have demonstrated its potential to generate world-class deposits. One notable example is the Navan de-posit, which is one of the largest known Irish-Type/Mississippi Valley-Type (IT / MVT) deposits in the world. Navan has been a prolific producer of zinc and lead ores for the past 45 years, contributing significantly to the mineral wealth and economic development of the region. Irish-type deposits, such as Navan and Lisheen/Galmoy, have the advantage of being metallurgically straightforward and of producing clean concentrates with minimal impurities. Such clean concentrates are highly sought after by zinc smelters worldwide, as they allow for efficient blending with other zinc concentrates of lower quality. After decades of mineral exploration, the potential for new discoveries in the Irish Midlands basin still remains high. The metal endowment of the basin and quality of its deposits, coupled with advances in exploration technologies, such as seismics, make it an attractive exploration play. Large areas of the basin also remain relatively underexplored, particularly under cover rock sequences, such as the Tober Colleen Formation (the lowermost part of the “Calp”). Indeed, the combination of accumulated geological knowledge, technological advancements, and on-going exploration programmes greatly enhances the likelihood of new and exciting mineral discoveries in the Irish Midlands basin in the coming years. In summary, the Irish Midlands basin's track record of discoveries and the characteristics of Irish-type deposits, including their size, grade and concentrate quality, reinforce the basin's significance in global zinc exploration and mining. Production of zinc from the Irish Midlands basin also contributes to the European Union’s (EU) mineral self-sufficiency objectives and sustainability agenda thereby enhancing resource security, reducing carbon emissions, and fostering a more sustainable and resilient mineral supply chain within the EU.
