Abstract:
This paper presents the air content results of self-consolidating concrete (SCC) and its mortar phase including rice husk ash (RHA) as a supplementary cementing material. Moreover, this paper demonstrates a simple technique to determine the dosage of air-entraining admixture (AEA) required for the target air content in SCC. Different SCC mixtures were designed based on the water/binder (W/B) ratios of 0.30–0.50 and design air content of 4–8%. RHA was incorporated in the concretes substituting 0–30% of cement by weight. The mortars were formulated from the mixture proportions of the corresponding parent concretes and tested to determine the air content at various AEA dosages. The effects of W/B ratio and RHA content on the air content of both mortar and concrete were observed. The effect of mortar volume on the air content of concrete was also noticed. Besides, the AEA dosages required for the target air contents of concrete were estimated based on the equivalent mortar air contents. Later the air-entrained SCC mixtures were produced using AEA and tested for the air content. Test results exhibit that the air contents of both mortar and concrete were significantly influenced by the W/B ratio and RHA content. The concrete air content was also greatly influenced by its mortar volume. The AEA dosage increased with lower W/B ratio, higher RHA content, and greater mortar volume for the target air contents. In addition, the actual AEA dosages were consistent with the estimated AEA dosages of the concretes. An excellent correlation was observed between the actual and estimated AEA dosages. The strong correlation suggests that the AEA dosage needed for a target air content in concrete can be determined based on the equivalent air content of its mortar phase. Be to, pateikiamas paprastas būdas parinkti orą įsiurbiančio priedo (AEA) dozę, siekiant gauti reikalingą oro kiekį SCC. Nustatyta W/B santykio ir RHA kiekio įtaka oro kiekiui tiek skiedinyje, tiek betone bei skiedinio tūrio įtaka oro kiekiui betone. Be to, AEA dozės, reikalingos numatytam oro kiekiui betone pasiekti, nustatytos pagal ekvivalentinį oro kiekį skiedinyje.

Abstract:
In production tunnels, time domain reflectometry (TDR) was used to manage irrigation and leaching by controlling water content in the rhizosphere of air-slit containerized white spruce (Picea glauca (Moench) Voss) seedlings (1+0). Seedlings were exposed to four irrigation regimes (v/v: IR-60%, IR-45%, IR-30%, and IR-15%) during the first growing season to assess IR effects on growth, gas exchange, nutrient uptake, carbohydrates, root architecture, and leaching. In the province of Quebec, seedling producers generally maintain a high substrate water content (>50%, v/v) during all growth phases. The accuracy and feasibility of using TDR to decrease irrigation without affecting the material attributes of the seedlings at the end of the first growing season was confirmed. However, seedlings grown under IR-15% had significantly lower height, root collar diameter, shoot and root dry masses, root surface, root length, net photosynthesis, and nutrient contents than seedlings grown under IR-30%, IR-45%, and IR-60%. In comparison with IR-30% and IR-45%, the application of IR-60% produced no increase in shoot or root growth, mineral nutrition, and carbohydrates. Seedlings grown under IR-15%, IR-30%, and IR-45% used approximately 28, 37, and 46%, respectively, of the amount of water applied under IR-60%. Nutrient losses including anions and cations under IR-60% were higher in comparison with the other IRs. Maintaining a water content in the rhizosphere that changes with the stage of seedling development is suggested to optimize growth and to avoid excess irrigation and leaching.

Abstract:
We investigated the contents of the insulin receptor-beta subunit (IRβ) and [Tyr1162/1163]-phosphorylated IRβas surrogate indices of total IR content and IR activation in postmortem hippocampal formation brain specimens from nondiabetic sporadic Alzheimer’s disease (AD) cases. We found no significant changes in the brain contents of total IRβor [Tyr1162/1163]-phosphorylated IRβ, suggesting normal IR content and activation in the brains of nondiabetic sporadic AD cases. Moreover, total IRβand [Tyr1162/1163]-phosphorylated IRβlevels in the hippocampal formation are not correlated with the severity of amyloid or tau-neuropathology. Exploring the regulation of glycogen synthase kinase 3 (GSK3) α/β, key IR-signaling components, we observed significantly lower levels of total GSK3 α/βin brain specimens from nondiabetic AD cases, suggesting that impaired IR signaling mechanisms might contribute to the onset and/or progression of AD dementia. Outcomes from our study support the development of insulin-sensitizing therapeutic strategies to stimulate downstream IR signaling in nondiabetic AD cases.

Abstract:
The lignin content of pulp is determined from its diffuse reflectance infrared spectrum by an algorithm that calculates the degree of overlap between two spectra. The lignin:cellulose fraction correlates with kappa number, a titrimetric measure of lignin. Essentially no sample preparation is required, and the procedure is insensitive to variations in moisture content. The algorithm is able to detect changes induced by exposure of pulp to NO2.

The harmful Internet content, as one of the main problems related to the birth of Internet, has already attracted attention of international and national institutions. Regardless of two main problems arising in this field – the global nature of Internet and the subjective nature of malignancy, it‘s almost decade as European Union and the Council of Europe are trying to solve harmful Internet material related questions in such ways, that would be acceptable to all the region. The author of this work suggests that basis of Lithuanian law should be reviewed and the approach to the tendencies of international regulation should be more critical – special attention should be paid when implementing self-regulatory mechanisms.

Abstract:
The aim of this study was to find the non genetical influence facts in cows milk, for healthy cows and cows with secret mastitis. Scientific research work was carried out at the Department of Non-infectious diseases, Lithuanian Veterinary Academy and Practical Instruction and Research Centre LVA from 2005 to 2007. This work analyses data from dairy cow milk production. Experiments were carried out on two to seven year old black and white breed lactating cows, during the housing period. Data from 166 cows was used in this analysis. Inclusion criteria - somatic cell count higher than 400x 103/ml. We analyzed the influence of lactation on milk somatic cell count, cow age impact on productivity during lactation period on the number of somatic cells in the milk, parturition – to conception period length, season of the year. Increasing lactation number, was associated with elevated somatic cell count from 247, 3 until 392, 4 103/ml; and average milk yield per day also increased from 12,1 until 13,8 kg, milk fat increased from 4,34 until 4,38 percent, protein content increased from 3,15 to 3,30 percent. Milk lactose content decreased accordingly from 4,75 to 4,67 percent. Age positively influences milk productivity. This can be explained by lowered resistance to mastitis which is more frequent with age, cow automatic milking and supervision mistakes (Powell, et Al. 1997). According to literature data age and lactation period highly influences cow health and productivity. Age has... [to full text]

Abstract:

The Next Generation Science Standards (NGSS) represent a significant shift in the goals of U.S. science education. Instead of a focus solely on content acquisition, the NGSS aim to engage students in the practices of science. Teachers will require substantial support, in large part from science leaders at the district level, to change their instruction to accomplish this vision. However, little is known about how these leaders conceptualize the NGSS. Therefore, this dissertation utilizes a sensemaking theoretical framework to explore the beliefs and pedagogical content knowledge (PCK) of district science leaders about one of the NGSS science practices, scientific argumentation. Greater understandings of these constructs can aid in designing appropriate supports for district leaders and meeting the challenges of implementing the NGSS. Fifty-three district leaders from states that have adopted the NGSS participated in a survey focused on their beliefs and PCK for argumentation. After the administration of the survey, 10 district leaders who represented a range of states and beliefs were selected for follow-up interviews. These interviews were semi-structured and focused on the same areas of belief as in the survey. The findings from the surveys and interviews indicate that most district science leaders are supporters of the NGSS and believe that scientific argumentation offers important benefits for students. Many leaders referenced one or more of the NGSS science practices in their descriptions of effective science education and asserted that they believe that the NGSS will require teachers in their districts to make substantial changes in their current instruction. However, some leaders also maintained their beliefs in the effectiveness of traditional instructional methods that are not compatible with the NGSS, and few leaders mentioned critique as an essential component of argumentation. In addition, many leaders demonstrated challenges in their PCK for argumentation, specifically related to evidence and reasoning in scientific arguments and the role of critique in dialogical interactions. Therefore, supporting leaders to develop more accurate conceptions and knowledge of the NGSS and argumentation should be a priority for districts nationwide

Sillman, Kathryn V. "Examining the Role of Residency Content Coaching in an Urban Teacher Residency Program." Thesis, Boston College, 2016. http://hdl.handle.net/2345/bc-ir:104987.

Full text
Abstract:
Thesis advisor: Marilyn Cochran-Smith
The clinical experience of future urban teachers is increasingly regarded as one of the most important aspects of teacher preparation (NCATE, 2010; NRC, 2010). However, there is widespread agreement that further knowledge must be acquired on what constitutes rich clinical experience, and on the influence of such learning opportunities especially in urban, high-needs contexts (Anderson & Stillman, 2013; Levine, 2006; Picus, Monk, & Knight, 2012). This dissertation aims to increase our understanding of clinical experience. Based on sociocultural and socio-constructivist perspectives, and drawing on Lave and Wenger’s (1991) theories of learning within communities of practice, this dissertation employed qualitative research methods to examine the phenomenon of content coaching during an urban teacher residency program. This dissertation argues that residency content coaching provided a context within which residents could integrate what they were learning about “ambitious teaching” (Lampert & Graziani, 2009; Newmann & Wehlage, 1993) into their own practice through ongoing negotiations with their coaches. Coaching interactions were by and large responsive to individual resident’s learning needs, and guided residents to begin to place their students’ learning at the center of decision-making when planning, teaching, and assessing. The dissertation further investigates the actual and aspirational characteristics of coaching in this context. Overall findings suggest that content coaching addresses several persistent problems of traditional pre-service fieldwork supervision (Darling-Hammond, 2010; Featherstone, 2007), and offers a more coherent approach. Consequently, this dissertation contributes to our collective understanding of clinical experience in preparing teachers to teach ambitiously in urban classrooms

Abstract:
This master degree paper, named Media content diversity and democratic processes: small country case, will be talking about media diversity (pliuralism). Media pluralism is related with diversity in media. It is necessary to separate two concepts: structure diversity of media and content diversity of media. The first speaks about media implement ant owners diversity, the second – about wide spectrum of opinions, comments, genres, players and etc. In this paper it was taken a position, that any implement of media firstly have to form a objective point of view of a reader to fact or problem, practice critical look and thought, must present not only one narrow journalist opinion or one way formed view to a reader, but wide choice of specialists, experts opinions, comments, many-sided providence spectrum. It was conciderated at the tendency, that in small country (such as Baltic countries) individual implement of media, what have position, does it’s inside or outside policy, do not gives information to receiver a possibility to get all information about one or another concrete case or event. Influence of owners, corruption in news media, lack of educated and professional journalists and citizens limited interests and possibilities harm the content diversity of news media: receivers (readers, viewers, listeners, consumers) take all they get, suppliers (media implements) do not have reasons to do they bests.

Abstract:
There are a lot of freeware and commercial content management systems developed by IT companies and individual developers. Notwithstanding the diversity of these content management systems, all of them have one single purpose – manage content of the web site by separating presentation from business logic. This document investigates a content management system designed to be used by organizations. The model of a trivial content management system is modified into the content management system for organizations by introducing concepts of information objects and a structure of an organization. An experiment has been carried out to test the new content management system model. The experiment results proved the assumption that the suggested new content management system model is more effective than the trivial content management system model.

Abstract:

Abstract:
In 2012, the American Board of Medical Specialties (ABMS) approved Interventional Radiology (IR) as its own specialty. Born out of the field of Diagnostic Radiology, IR requires a more clinical focus on initial consultation and post-procedural management, rather than its previous role of performing image-guided procedures. Interventional Radiology: Fundamentals of Clinical Practice is written with this new focus in mind to help readers incorporate their procedural knowledge into a holistic approach of patient management. Chapters explore topics across a broad spectrum of IR, with a focus on etiology and pathophysiology of disease, followed by discussions on intra-procedural and post-procedural management. Numerous tables and boxes, and over 420 total figures complement chapter content. This comprehensive text is a must-have text for IR residents and reference for all practicing interventional radiologists.

Full text
Abstract:
Although nitrate fertilizers are critical for enhancing crop production, excess application of nitrate fertilizer can result in ground water contamination leading to the so called "nitrate problem". Health and environmental problems related to this "nitrate problem" have led to serious concerns in many parts of the world including the United States and Israel. These concerns have resulted in legislation limiting the amount of nitrate N in drinking water to 10mg/g. Development of a fast, reliable, nitrate sensor for in-situ application can be extremely useful in dynamic monitoring of environmentally sensitive locations and applying site-specific amounts of nitrate fertilizer in a precision farming system. The long range objective of this study is to develop a fast, reliable, real-time nitrate sensor. The specific objective of this one year feasibility study was to explore the possible use of nitrate sensor based on mid-IR spectroscopy developed at UCD along with the silver halide fiber ATR (i.e. attenuated total internal reflection) sensor developed at TAU to detect nitrate content in solution and soil paste in the presence of interfering compounds. Experiments conducted at Technion and UCD clearly demonstrate the feasibility of detecting nitrate content in solutions as well as soil pastes using mid-IR spectroscopy and an ATR technique. When interfering compounds such as carbonates, bicarbonates, organic matter etc. are present special data analysis technique such as singular value decomposition (SYD) or cross correlation was necessary to detect nitrate concentrations successfully. Experiments conducted in Israel show that silver halide ATR fiber based FEWS, particularly flat FEWS, resulted in low standard error and high coefficient of determination (i.e. R² values) indicating the potential of the flat Fiberoptic Evanescent Wave Spectroscopy (FEWS) for direct determinations of nitrate. Moreover, they found that it was possible to detect nitrate and other anion concentrations using anion exchange membranes and M1R spectroscopy. The combination of the ion-exchange membranes with fiberoptices offers one more option to direct determination of nitrate in environmental systems.

Full text
Abstract:
The ability to detect and classify buried objects using thermal infrared imaging is affected by the environmental conditions at the time of imaging, which leads to an inconsistent probability of detection. For example, periods of dense overcast or recent precipitation events result in the suppression of the soil temperature difference between the buried object and soil, thus preventing detection. This work introduces an environmentally informed framework to reduce the false alarm rate in the classification of regions of interest (ROIs) in thermal IR images containing buried objects. Using a dataset that consists of thermal images containing buried objects paired with the corresponding environmental and meteorological conditions, we employ a machine learning approach to determine which environmental conditions are the most impactful on the visibility of the buried objects. We find the key environmental conditions include incoming shortwave solar radiation, soil volumetric water content, and average air temperature. For each image, ROIs are computed using a computer vision approach and these ROIs are coupled with the most important environmental conditions to form the input for the classification algorithm. The environmentally informed classification algorithm produces a decision on whether the ROI contains a buried object by simultaneously learning on the ROIs with a classification neural network and on the environmental data using a tabular neural network. On a given set of ROIs, we have shown that the environmentally informed classification approach improves the detection of buried objects within the ROIs.
