Abstract:

Abstract:
Our television experience has been changing quickly, with the growing existence of new services e the delivery of real time high definition multimedia contents. To this change has contributed the technological evolution of the telecommunications networks that allow more and more the access of video, audio and data using the IP protocol (Internet Protocol). This is the base of the IPTV technology (Internet Protocol-based Television) and the associated service of this technology, the Triple-Play, where new television, internet and telephone services arrive to users homes through a single communication point, a Set-Top Box. The IMS technology (IP Multimedia Subsystem) can be integrated in the IPTV architecture allowing a service convergence not existent until these days, centralizing all the information of the network elements with the purpose of routing the data in a fast and save way between them. In this document is presented the study of these two technologies based on their architecture and the protocols that complete them. For a practical study a solution called “IPTV 2.0” was developed which allows the delivery of IPTV services from the multimedia server to the client software, taking advantage of the IMS functionalities. The solution was developed in the Media Center XBMC that makes the interface with the user. This document presents the study that was made, including an explanation of the implementation, the tests that were done and the evaluation of the solution.

Abstract:
The distribution of television is currently dominated by three technologies: over-the-air broadcast, cable, and satellite. The advent of IP networks and the increased availability of broadband access created a new vehicle for the distribution of TV services. The distribution of digital TV services over IP networks, or IPTV, offers carriers flexibility and added value in the form of additional services. It causes therefore no surprise the rapid roll-out of IPTV services by operators worldwide in the past few years. IPTV distribution imposes stringent requirements on both performance and reliability. It is therefore challenging for an IPTV operator to guarantee the quality of experience expected by its users, and doing so in an efficient manner. In this dissertation I investigate some of the challenges faced by IPTV distribution network operators, and I propose novel techniques to address these challenges. First, I address one of the major concerns of IPTV network deployment: channel change delay. This is the latency experienced by users when switching between TV channels. Synchronisation and buffering of video streams can cause channel change delays of several seconds. I perform an empirical analysis of a particular solution to the channel change delay problem, namely, predictive pre-joining of TV channels. In this scheme each Set Top Box simultaneously joins additional multicast groups (TV channels) along with the one requested by the user. If the user switches to any of these channels next, switching latency is virtually eliminated, and user experience is improved. The results show that it is possible to eliminate zapping delay for a significant percentage of channel switching requests with little impact in access network bandwidth cost. Second, I propose a technique to increase the resource and energy efficiency of IPTV networks. This technique is based on a simple paradigm: avoiding waste. To reduce the inefficiencies of current static multicast distribution schemes, I propose a semi-dynamic scheme where only a selection of TV multicast groups is distributed in the network, instead of all. I perform an empirical evaluation of this method and conclude that its use results in significant bandwidth reductions without compromising service performance. I also demonstrate that these reductions may translate into significant energy savings in the future. Third, to increase energy efficiency further I propose a novel energy and resource friendly protocol for core optical IPTV networks. The idea is for popular IPTV traffic to optically bypass the network nodes, avoiding electronic processing. I evaluate this proposal empirically and conclude that the introduction of optical switching techniques results in a significant increase in the energy efficiency of IPTV networks. All the schemes I present in this dissertation are evaluated by means of trace-driven analyses using a dataset from an operational IPTV service provider. Such thorough and realistic evaluation enables the assessment of the proposed techniques with an increased level of confidence, and is therefore a strength of this dissertation.

Abstract:
This thesis explores how to use gamification for an IPTV platform to increase user engagement. Gamification has been defined as the use of game elements in non-game contexts. This thesis describes the fundamental concepts about gamification and taps on the practical use of these concepts for media and TV consumption. Based on interviews and an online survey we developed and evaluated low-fi prototypes to study some key aspects of Gamification for IPTV solutions. 19 people, not real users, participated in the final evaluation of the last designed low-fi prototype providing qualitative results through an evaluation survey. The result of this case study is a set of game techniques that could be valid for a platform like Ericsson Multiscreen TV, which is the base platform in this thesis. None precedent studies have been found in the research community on the use of gamification on an IPTV platform.

Abstract:
This master’s thesis project concerns implementing and evaluating Web 2.0 services for IPTV. This thesis project was carried out at Accedo Broadband during the period August to December 2008. Accedo Broadband is a provider of interactive applications and on-demand content for IPTV. The report will analyze, specify, create, and evaluate a solution for adding Web 2.0 functionality from the most popular sites as IPTV content. We will evaluate several different web services APIs and examine how suitable they are for implementation in the context of IPTV. An IPTV set-top box has limited CPU processing power, memory capacity, screen resolution is generally limited to 720 by 576 pixels, and only a limited set of input devices and interfaces are available. The IPTV set-top box receives digitally encoded audio and video content through IP and renders this content so it is viewable on an analogue TV and the audio is output via speakers. The goal of this project is to reduce the amount of integration work and configuration necessary for creating Web 2.0 IPTV applications by creating a general framework for Web 2.0 applications. We will present and evaluate the most common web programming technologies and see which are most suitable for our purposes. We have developed four different interactive demonstration services to illustrate the usage of an IPTV platform.

The telecommunication aggregation networks were initially designed to transport phone calls, using technologies based on circuit switching. The adaptation of those networks to transport data trafic has some ineficiencies, which results, that the operator`s revenues do not follow the bandwidth provided to customers. This fact has become a growing problem with the development of services such as IPTV, a service which requires high bandwidth, high transmission rate variation and point-multipoint connections. The Ethernet appears as a starting point (and ending as well, since more than 95 % of the data tra c is generated or is destinated to an Ethernet port [1]) for new aggregation network's technologies, called Carrier Ethernet technologies. This paper, presents a study of the Ethernet technology, requirements for Carrier Ethernet technologies and the promising MPLS-TP, still in the standardization process. In order to optimize IPTV service distribution, there is proposed a scenario, where it was verified that the combined use of unicast and multicast transmission can result in an eficient use of network resources.

Abstract:

Abstract:
As broadcast television has developed from analogue transmission over the air to digital transmission over cable and satellite, and today over IP networks, many new challenges as well as opportunities to develop new services has surfaced. This thesis will provide an overview of the IPTV technology with a focus on interactive services, as well as describe a prototype that has been developed to illustrate how interactivity could be implemented. It was observed that sports broadcasting was a good candidate to present additional interactive content, due to the wealth of material usually available outside of the broadcast itself, such as statistics. A prototype has been developed at TeliaSonera, an IPTV provider with roughly 400.000 customers, as a part of the Next Generation Media project at the Royal Institute of Technology (KTH). The prototype has been integrated into the existing user interface to provide management of sports highlights, enabling users to view highlights in live matches on several channels at once, without worrying about missing any of the action, even if it happens on a channel they are not currently watching. Interest has also been shown from a third party, using the developed framework for delivering events to the set-top box, and the existing code was modified to allow various types of events to be received, allowing the user to interact with the television content in different ways.

Internet Protocol TV (IPTV) delivers television content to users over IP-based network. Different from the traditional TV services, IPTV platforms provide users with large amount of multimedia contents with interactive and personalized services, including the targeted advertisement, on-demand content, personal video recorder, and so on. IPTV is promising since it allows to satisfy users experience and presents advanced entertainment services. On the other hand, the Next Generation Network (NGN) approach in allowing services convergence (through for instance coupling IPTV with the IP Multimedia Subsystem (IMS) architecture or NGN Non-IMS architecture) enhances users' experience and allows for more services personalization. Although the rapid advancement in interactive TV technology (including IPTV and NGN technologies), services personalization is still in its infancy, lacking the real distinguish of each user in a unique manner, the consideration of the context of the user (who is this user, what is his preferences, his regional area, location, ..) and his environment (characteristics of the users' devices 'screen types, size, supported resolution, '' and networks available network types to be used by the user, available bandwidth, ..') as well as the context of the service itself (content type and description, available format 'HD/SD', available language, ..) in order to provide the adequate personalized content for each user. This advanced IPTV services allows services providers to promote new services and open new business opportunities and allows network operators to make better utilization of network resources through adapting the delivered content according to the available bandwidth and to better meet the QoE (Quality of Experience) of clients. This thesis focuses on enhanced personalization for IPTV services following a user-centric context-aware approach through providing solutions for: i) Users' identification during IPTV service access through a unique and fine-grained manner (different from the identification of the subscription which is the usual current case) based on employing a personal identifier for each user which is a part of the user context information. ii) Context-Aware IPTV service through proposing a context-aware system on top of the IPTV architecture for gathering in a dynamic and real-time manner the different context information related to the user, devices, network and service. The context information is gathered throughout the whole IPTV delivery chain considering the user domain, network provider domain, and service/content provider domain. The proposed context-aware system allows monitoring user's environment (devices and networks status), interpreting user's requirements and making the user's interaction with the TV system dynamic and transparent. iii) Personalized recommendation and selection of IPTV content based on the different context information gathered and the personalization decision taken by the context-aware system (different from the current recommendation approach mainly based on matching content to users' preferences) which in turn highly improves the users' Quality of Experience (QoE) and enriching the offers of IPTV services

Abstract:

Abstract:

Existing VoD solutions often rely on unicast to distribute content, which leads to a higher load on the VoD server as more nodes become interested in the content. In such case, P2P is an alternative way of distributing content since it makes better use of available resources in the network. In this report, several P2P structures are evaluated from an operators point of view. We believe BitTorrent is the most adequate protocol for a P2P solution in IPTV environments. Two BitTorrent clients have been implemented on an IP-STB as proof of concept to find out whether P2P is suited for IPTV environments. Several tests were conducted to evaluate the performance of both clients and to see if they were able to reach a sufficient throughput on the IP-STB. Based upon the tests and the overall impressions, we are convinced that this particular P2P protocol is well suited for IPTV environments. Hopefully, a client developed from scratch for the IP-STB will offer even greater characteristics.

Further, we have studied how to share recorded content among IP-STBs. Such a design would probably have many similarities to BitTorrent since a central node needs to keep track of content; the IP-STBs take care of the rest.

The report also brings up whether BitTorrent is suitable for streaming. We believe that the necessary changes required to obtain such functionality will disrupt the strengths of BitTorrent. Some alternative solutions are presented where BitTorrent has been extended with additional modules, such as a server.

Abstract:
Video streaming over the Internet has become the most sought after application and is growing at a very fast rate. Internet Protocol Television (IPTV) is a technology that has been growing fast, replacing traditional cable TV. With the rapid development in the high speed networks, multimedia streaming over the internet has increased incredibly, of which video streaming is the major source of traffic in the core network. Hence IPTV video streaming over the core network has become one of the active topics for research. The major challenge associated with IPTV traffic is the fact that video traffic requires more bandwidth and is more sensitive to delay and packet loss due to congestion. Lots of research has been done to provide an Admission Control algorithm for IPTV traffic. Admission Control becomes an essential part as it is typically enforced to ensure QoS in the network. It helps prevent bottleneck in the core network. This thesis proposes an efficient method to provide admission control for IPTV traffic in the core network by using multiple GRIP probe packets to check the resource availability in the core network for the new incoming channel request. Moreover, the algorithm proves that using multiple video qualities in the network helps increase the number of channels delivered to the end user, thus satisfying more users, as opposed to single video quality. Using multiple GRIP packets made the proposed method more reliable and it was seen that on an average, the number of channels delivered to the end user was increase over 90%.

Abstract:
The master thesis: Inter-application communication in IPTV client was conducted at the Business Multimedia Unit in Ericsson. In the IPTV client side, there is a need to control another IPTV client remotely with a low latency. This functionality can be used in playing game and remote operation in IPTV. The current solution is that clients communicate through the portal (Ericsson’s Web based IPTV system) in remote location with high latency. The focus of this thesis work is designing, building and evaluating a communication mechanism among IPTV clients in a LAN. The major contribution of this thesis is analysis and design of a solution. The comparison between an implemented solution in this project and other possible solutions is also included in this thesis. The purpose of the solution is to improve the configuration and performance of Ericsson IPTV clients. In the thesis, a prototype of inter-application communication between IPTV clients was designed. The prototype includes a proxy server (Based on Node.js), UPnP applications (Based on open source UPnP stacks), communication components in portal system and an Android client. The prototype has achieved the goals of setting up fast and convenient communication in Ericsson IPTV client side, without using the IPTV server. UPnP applications allow two devices in a LAN find each other with no need to configure IP and port. A local proxy server, a couple of communication components in portal and an Android application are used to set up communication in a LAN. Also different solutions have been analyzed and designed in the project. And some related technologies have been investigated and introduced. Measurement and test shows that the communication between IPTV clients in a LAN is fast enough to replace the way of communication through the server. Security analysis shows some possible drawbacks, like the security vulnerability and compatibility. The security can be improved by some future work, part of which is proposed and designed in the thesis. Analysis also shows the advantages and disadvantages of on different service discovery technologies.

Abstract:

The trends in todays tele- and datacommunication market point toward using IP for all sorts of service delivery ranging from voice calls to TV. The next natural step in this evolution is to provide the same set of services to the end users independent of the access technology and device used. The IP Multimedia Subsystem (IMS) is an IP based telecommunications platform which targets this and lets the operators develop new services once which can then be used on many different devices.

This thesis examines the integration of IPTV and IMS. Can IMS be used to deliver TV services and can the IPTV set-top-boxes of today be used as clients in IMS? Since this is a new and previously unexamined area an explorative approach is taken. The aim is to identify how such an integration could be performed and the possible problems which have to be solved. To assist in this exploration a TV-push service based on IMS technology is constructed.

Based on the experiences from this service a general architecture for IPTV in IMS is suggested.

A number of problems crucial to solve for a successful integration are identified and possible solutions to these are discussed.

A management platform is an integral part of any modern computer network. Its role in any kind of network (research or commercial) is undeniable. By using the management solution, the operators of the network monitor, troubleshoot and manage the network from a centra-lized location. In a research network such as the Mid Sweden University (MIUN) IPTV test bed, it also plays a very important role. Researchers can setup different configurations for the underlying network according to their research goals. MIUN IPTV test bed is expanding in the sense that it is covering a greater geographical area and more researchers are using the network in order to carry out their experiments. In this project, an attempt will be made to develop a management platform for the IPTV network. This platform will manage the whole network and will give the researchers opportunity to setup trail field by configuring the network devices according to their experiments.

Abstract:
It is common practice to use web technologies when creating graphical user interfaces for IPTV set-top boxes. The graphical user interface in TeliaSonera’s IPTV service is built with HTML, CSS and Javascript. Lately focus has shifted from just showing video to also provide richer user experiences – coming from requirements of new services and the ongoing shift in resolution from standard definition to high definition. However, the set-top box is a device with very limited resources and it is important to assure good performance while allowing richer user interfaces. Against that background the thesis asks “how can a web-based graphical user interface for IPTV set-top boxes, such as that of TeliaSonera, be improved and prepared for future IPTV services and richer user experiences?” To provide an answer two studies were made; one of web technologies and one of future IPTV services. The technologies were evaluated in a Pugh matrix against a set of criteria (the most important being performance, platform independence, and resolution independence) as well as against the results of the IPTV services study. SVG (Scalable Vector Graphics) scored best in the evaluation. The SVG renderer performed significantly better on the set-top box than the Mozilla web browser that TeliaSonera currently used. To put the technology to test the HTML based user interface was ported to SVG with expectations of a more responsive and graphically rich user interface. The result was satisfying. Loading times had been halved, the user interface works in both SD and HD resolution and richer graphics were added in form of gradients and a skinning system that allow easy change of appearance. The thesis recommends SVG when building a rich graphical user interface for a settop box.

Abstract:
The objective of the proposed research is to design and evaluate end-to-end solutions to support the Quality of Experience (QoE) for the Internet Protocol Television (IPTV) service. IPTV is a system that integrates voice, video, and data delivery into a single Internet Protocol (IP) framework to enable interactive broadcasting services at the subscribers. It promises significant advantages for both service providers and subscribers. For instance, unlike conventional broadcasting systems, IPTV broadcasts will not be restricted by the limited number of channels in the broadcast/radio spectrum. Furthermore, IPTV will provide its subscribers with the opportunity to access and interact with a wide variety of high-quality on-demand video content over the Internet. However, these advantages come at the expense of stricter quality of service (QoS) requirements than traditional Internet applications. Since IPTV is considered as a real-time broadcast service over the Internet, the success of the IPTV service depends on the QoE perceived by the end-users. The characteristics of the video traffic as well as the high-quality requirements of the IPTV broadcast impose strict requirements on transmission delay. IPTV framework has to provide mechanisms to satisfy the stringent delay, jitter, and packet loss requirements of the IPTV service over lossy transmission channels with varying characteristics. The proposed research focuses on error recovery and channel change latency problems in IPTV networks. Our specific aim is to develop a content delivery framework that integrates content features, IPTV application requirements, and network characteristics in such a way that the network resource utilization can be optimized for the given constraints on the user perceived service quality. To achieve the desired QoE levels, the proposed research focuses on the design of resource optimal server-based and peer-assisted delivery techniques. First, by analyzing the tradeoffs on the use of proactive and reactive repair techniques, a solution that optimizes the error recovery overhead is proposed. Further analysis on the proposed solution is performed by also focusing on the use of multicast error recovery techniques. By investigating the tradeoffs on the use of network-assisted and client-based channel change solutions, distributed content delivery frameworks are proposed to optimize the error recovery performance. Next, bandwidth and latency tradeoffs associated with the use of concurrent delivery streams to support the IPTV channel change are analyzed, and the results are used to develop a resource-optimal channel change framework that greatly improves the latency performance in the network. For both problems studied in this research, scalability concerns for the IPTV service are addressed by properly integrating peer-based delivery techniques into server-based solutions.

Abstract:
ABSTRACT: Since the invention of the “magic box” that changed the world (TV), it has constantly evolved not only at the physical and electronic levels, but also in its underlying concept. The appearance of digital television is one of the most significant developments in television in recent years and has allowed users to enjoy a multimedia experience with much more quality but without significantly more interactivity. Currently, the viewer requires much more than being only restricted to select one of the available channels on the TV equipment that can’t interact very much with him and that is not customizable. The TV equipment concept is becoming more generalized to any equipment that has the minimum capabilities that allow the user to view multimedia contents with sound and image. Mobile phones, PDAs and personal computers (PC) are some examples of systems that allow the user, once connected to the Internet, to obtain a fixed or mobile multimedia experience that is more interactive and customizable, benefiting from a diverse range of available contents. So, why not extend these features of personalization and interactivity to “conventional” television systems and turn devices such as PCs and mobile phones into non dedicated TV systems? This constitutes the concept of IPTV, as an accessible, interactive, customizable, comprehensive and heterogeneous environment, both in its contents, networking level, communication features and client devices. In this Master’s Thesis, a prototype of an IPTV server system was designed and implemented having in mind the aggregation and management of a multiplicity and diversity of media contents that are available on the Internet. The work has also created the conditions for introducing a learning component of the user profile in an intelligent and dynamic way, in order to suggest contents in an automatic and inteligente form. The aggregation and content management has the final objective of making all contents available to an IPTV client (whose development is not the aim of this work). The client system must be designed to handle the whole process of interacting with the user and access the multimedia contents, in an usage environment that is focused on convergence and mobility in terms of visualization and completely heterogeneous in terms of hardware and user’s needs. The developed system tries to be as modular as possible, with the objective of distributing the processing across the network and allow an easy integration of new services or the modification of existing ones. The server has no mechanisms for encoding, compression and optimization of multimedia streams, nor has any management mechanisms for the multimedia transport over the communication network.

IPTV (Internet Protocol Television), a new and modern concept of emerging technologies with focus on providing cutting edge high-resolution television, broadcast, and other fascinating services, is now easily available with only requirement of high-speed internet. Everytime a new technology is made local, it faces tremendous problems whether from technological point of view to enhance the performance or when it comes down to satisfy the customers. This cutting edge technology has provided researchers to embark and play with different tools to provide better quality while focusing on existing tools. Our target in dissertation is to provide a few interesting facets of IPTV and come up with a concept of introducing an imaginary cache that can re-collect the packets travelling from streaming server to the end user. In the access node this cache would be fixed and then on the basis of certain pre-assumed research work we can conclude how quick retransmission can take place when the end user responds back using RTCP protocol and asks for the retransmission of corrupted/lost packets. In the last section, we plot our scenario of streaming server on one side and client, end user on the other end and make assumption on the basis of throughput, response time and traffic.

Abstract:
Multimedia applications over the Internet and Internet Protocol Television (IPTV) gain a lot of attention. IPTV has a number of service requirements such as
high bandwidth, scalability, minimum delay, jitter and channel switch time. IP multicast, IMS (IP Multimedia System) Protocol and peer-to-peer approaches are proposed for implementing IPTV. However, IP multicast requires all the routers in the core network to possess multicast capability, IMS does not easily scale and P2P cannot eciently utilize the network resources because of its completely distributed nature. To this end, we propose new application layer multicast protocol Cluster Based Application Layer Multicast IPTV (CALMTV) which combines application layer multicast, scalable video coding and probing techniques to meet IPTV requirements. We present the components and their relevant algorithms and evaluate the performance of CALMTV with ns2 simulations. Our results compared with the published results of other IPTV architectures show that CALMTV has better performance in end-to-end delay and zapping time.

Abstract:
With the standardization of passive optical networks, in particular GPON (gigabit-capable passive optical networks), which is adopted in Brazil, a new range of services become feasible, among them TV channels transmission to subscribers using the IP (Internet protocol), known as IPTV system, is one of the most important. This process has many advantages, including the possibility of offering a greater number of channels with variable quality. The greater inconvenience of this solution is that in any system of digital TV transmission the time to exchange channels, known as zapping time, can reach some seconds. To reduce this problem, this M.Sc thesis proposes a coding and transmission process for IPTV in GPON networks that reduces the zapping time to values smaller than one frame time. This work is based on the scalable SNR (signal to noise ratio) proposed in MPEG-2 standard and can be easily ported to other standards like FGS (fine grain scalability) in MPEG-4. Transport uses GPON multicast characteristics beside IGMP (Internet group management protocol). Once IPTV system offers many advantages like, increasing number of channels and better image quality per channel since bandwidth can be flexible. It is assumed that the IPTV subscriber will accept low video quality, at the zapping moment, but quality will increase progressively. Comparative graphics show the quality increase in terms of time between zapping, low quality video starting and the progressive quality increase up to stability in full quality.

Abstract:

IPTV is a growing form of distribution for TV and media. Reports show that the market will grow from the current 20-30 million subscribers to almost 100 million 2012. IPTV extends the traditional TV viewing with new services like renting movies from your TV. It could also be seen as a bridge between the traditional broadcast approach and the new on demand approach the users are used to from internet.

Since there are many actors in the IPTV market that all deliver the same basic functionality, companies must deliver better products that separate them from the competitors. This can be done either through doing things better than the others and/or delivering functionality that others can’t deliver.

This thesis project presents the development of a prototype system for serving user generated content in the IPTV middleware Dreamgallery. The developed prototype is a fully working system that includes (1) a fully automated system for transcoding, of video content. (2) A web portal presented with solutions for problems related to user content uploading and administration. (3) Seamless integration with the Dreamgallery middleware and end user GUI, with two different ways of viewing content. One way for easy exploration of new content and a second more structured way of browsing the content.

A study of three open source encoding softwares is also presented. The three encoders were subjects to tests of: speed, agility (file format support) and how well they handle files with corrupted data.

Abstract:
Recently, there has been a global trend among the telecommunication industry on the rapid deployment of IPTV (Internet Protocol Television) infrastructure and services. While the industry rushes into the IPTV era, the comprehensive understanding of the status and dynamics of IPTV network lags behind. Filling this gap requires in-depth analysis of large amounts of measurement data across the IPTV network. One type of the data of particular interest is device or system log, which has not been systematically studied before. In this dissertation, we will explore the possibility of utilizing system logs to serve a wide range of IPTV network management purposes including health monitoring, troubleshooting and performance evaluation, etc. In particular, we develop a tool to convert raw router syslogs to meaningful network events. In addition, by analyzing set-top box (STB) logs, we propose a series of models to capture both channel popularity and dynamics, and users' activity on the IPTV network.

Abstract:

The increase in media digitalization, broadband availability and technological convergence, allows new services, such as the IPTV (Internet Protocol Television) service, which offers television-related services over a private broadband TCP/IP network. Without proper care, entities or individuals monitoring these services traffic obtain a large amount of information on the service users, and could violate their privacies in an environment in which traditionally there is no such preoccupation, like in a living-room or another domestic environment. The goal of this work is to propose an IPTV architecture capable of guaranteeing a higher privacy level than the existing in traditional IPTV systems, so that it is not viable for an observer to correlate a service user with the content he/she watches.

The digital IPTV service has evolved in terms of features, technology and accessibility of their contents. However, the rapid evolution of features and services has brought a more complex offering to customers, which often are not enjoyed or even perceived. Therefore, it is important to measure the real advantage of those features and understand how they are used by customers. In this work, we present a strategy that deals directly with the real IPTV data, which result from the interaction actions with the set-top boxes by customers. But this data has a very low granularity level, which is complex and difficult to interpret. The approach is to transform the clicking actions to a more conceptual and representative level of the running activities. Furthermore, there is a significant reduction in the data cardinality, enhanced in terms of information quality. More than a transformation, this approach aims to be iterative, where at each level, we achieve a more accurate information, in order to characterize a particular behaviour. As experimental results, we present some application areas regarding the main offered features in this digital service. In particular, is made a study about zapping behaviour, and also an evaluation about DVR service usage. It is also discussed the possibility to integrate the strategy devised in a particular carrier, aiming to analyse the consumption rate of their services, in order to adjust them to customer real usage profile, and also to study the feasibility of new services introduction.

My minor dissertation in Intellectual Property Law is about Copyright Law and infringement in relation to mobile television, Internet Protocol Television and Internet Television as well as the online services of downloading and streaming. The thesis will contain of five chapters. The first chapter will give an overview of the nature of the problem, the structure and methodology as well as the named media and their technological background. The second chapter will then introduce the relevant technologies, institutions in charge and the general legislation and will serve as background information for the main issues of copyright. Further I will discuss operational licenses, which have to be distinguished from content licenses in the copyright correlation. Chapter three will be the focus of my thesis and will deal with copyright in connection with ITV, IPTV and mobile-TV. It will inter alia portray the issues of infringement, liability, exceptions and limitations in the named context as well as the proposed Copyright Amendment Bill 2015. The fourth chapter will then commence by discussing the German copyright in the relevant aspects of the topic. It will pay special attention to the legal dichotomy of online-streaming. Chapter five will summarise and conclude the relevant findings of the copyright issues. It will further give prospect to the legal dichotomy in South Africa and how to handle it, since there is no applicable local jurisdiction yet. Hence it will go beyond the comparisons by looking ahead for the developing online media and the necessity of law to properly adapt to it.

Internet services that provide the distribution of multimedia contents are growing exponentially and evolving in a constant way. Services that intend to deliver the multimedia contents that are more appropriate to the client preferences need to have the ability to learn the user profiles on multiple contexts. User profiles need to be learned an classified at different levels: personal, contextual and technological. Given this multi-dimensional classification of customers, the service will automatically compose television channels that are customized to the client and to the context where it is inserted at different moments in time. Thus, the client terminals should, in addition to the visualization capabilities of multimedia contents, allow the explicit interaction with the service, but also provide all implicit interactions that provide contextual information to the server. This work is part of a larger developing project that aims to create an IPTV service with automatic channel personalization and contents rating. In parallel with the development of an IPTV server, it was necessary to create a multiplatform mobile client able to fully interact with it. This client will allow users to visualize multimedia contents and interact (explicitly and implicitly) with the server. This dissertation presents the methodology and process of creating an IPTV client that can run on multiple platforms and in different types of devices

ABSTRACT: With the generalization of broadband Internet accesses, we have been seeing a gradual change in how content is available on the web. The static contents are being replaced by multimedia contents more interactive and appealing to the user. In this context, the services of video sharing have assumed a particular focus, namely services like YouTube. In most of these services, viewing the content is done through the introduction of a URI in the browser or performing a search based on a set of keywords. Moreover, there is no customization of content, since it is not offered to the user the possibility to define and categorize his content preferences. Thus, the main motivation of this dissertation is the implementation of two clients, web and mobile, which through a simple and intuitive interface, allows the user to define their favorite content areas and give them a rating. As a source of content, there is a self-adaptive server, which maintains the profile of each user and implements a learning process of the users' preferences. The server provides a continuum of videos where the user accepts the content or requests a change to the next multimedia content. This methodology aims to increase user satisfaction by creating in him the feeling that is watching a channel with content dedicated to him. Thus, after identified the general lack of tools that allow the user to customize the content and coupled with the fact that it was developed at the Instituto de Telecomunicações at the Universidade de Aveiro a server that implements the classification and provision of centralized content mentioned above, it was decided to embrace the challenge of implementing two clients, web and mobile, which together with the server, will create a new Internet service paradigm for distribution of multimedia content.

Abstract:

With the standardization of IP Multimedia Subsystem (IMS), the telecommunications scene becomes more and more converged and in the future we will most likely access our services from all kinds of devices and link them together. One important future access method that has so far been left out of the standardization is television. There is a need for Internet Protocol Television (IPTV) to work together with IMS and this thesis focuses on one aspect of that convergence, namely charging.

The problem explored in this thesis is if there is an efficient way of charging for IPTV services while taking advantage of the IMS charging functionality and this is done for two aspects of the problem. First, the possiblilty of an efficient Session Initiation Protocol (SIP) signaling schema is investigated and then a good charging Application Programming Interface (API) to be used when developing applications is investigated. The findings of these two investigations are then tested and improved during the implementation of a demo application.

This thesis delivers specifications for a signaling schema that enables a Set-Top Box (STB) to pass charging information to an IMS network via INFO requests inside a special charging session. The schema is small and extendable to ensure that it can be modified further on if necessary. The thesis also delivers an encapsulating and intuitive charging API to be used by developers who want to charge for their services.

Abstract:

Abstract:
In this research, we focused on developing personas and scenarios in designing a PC Portal for IPTV solution. We employed personas to consider users and their context of use when designing for the system. Different studies have been conducted on the subject of using personas and scenarios in design projects. Some of them show that using personas have a positive effect in the outcome of the design in particular contexts. Other studies, however, suggest that designers have difficulties when using personas in their design process. The underlying cause of these problems might refer to shortcomings in construction of suitable personas, or how to use them throughout the design process. We performed a literature review on personas and scenarios, their advantages, and, how to develop them. Then, we developed personas and scenarios for IPTV problem domain and to base our personas on user study results, we used questionnaire survey and interviews to acquire knowledge about the users. We proposed a design solution and developed a prototype based on elaborated personas and scenarios to evaluate our findings. We argued different challenges that we faced while using personas and scenarios. We illustrated how graphical user interfaces can be developed to satisfy multiple personas by providing the users with different representations of the same information. We also argued why the area of personalized television needs more attention from CHI community and why people are becoming more interested in personalized TV viewing experiences. Elaborated personas and scenarios helped us focus more on users and their context. This could not be easily achieved without rendering the raw data from user studies into personas and scenarios.

The continuous developments made on the network infrastructures allow to provide quality in multimedia services over-the-top. Also, mobile data traffic has been increasingly growing along with smartphone’s capabilities. This growth motivates the creation of multi-platform solutions that can target not only these devices but, in the case of the IPTV world, also the set-top-boxes, smart televisions and computers. HTTP streaming is a technique directed to stream over-the-top multimedia. Many global platforms make use of HTTP streaming, with names like Youtube or Netflix. In this work, a server architecture for streaming the public Portuguese channels as well as a multiplatform client architecture are proposed. The proposed software can be deployed on any regular server and provide extra functionalities such as tv listings. The client can run on any Media Source Extension (MSE) browser, without the need of any plugin like Flash. Finally, some tests were made on the two entities (server and client) in order to test the performance of the server and behaviour of the client through different network conditions.

A procedure is proposing a service execution environment, ISEE (IPTV Service Execution Environment), that is an open source framework. This environment supports various needs during developing and executing IPTV services, fully presents the interaction of IPTV with the “Service Component Platform” design concept, and has the features that can flexible use and provide new additional service quickly. in order to let service providers to quickly deliver interactive TV services that meet subscriber demands according to the market trends and thereby to build the brand loyalty and to enhance industry competitiveness. On the other hand, the design concept of “modularization platform” is applied to increase the flexibility and stability to expansion or update set-top-box (STB) or video server, and thereby to bring service providers more comprehensive options for platform maintenance. This paper also proposes the development tool—ISSE SDK based on the above targets. The ISEE SDK is the development tool for the IPTV services in ISEE. It is a freeware comply with the open source standards using licensing terms in Apache License, V2. Service developers can freely modify the ISEE SDK source codes and freely use the SDK and the application services developing with it. The SDK is easy to use and allows users to quickly develop IPTV services to support various STBs

The central goal of log analysis is to acquire new knowledge which will help systems administrators to better understand how their systems are being used. Telecommunications networks are one of those areas where the amount of logged data is huge and, most of the times, only parts of it are analyzed. That presents big questions to a network manager: Should they continue to log the data? Is there any relevant information that can be extracted from that data? The methods to extract it already exist? Could operations and management be improved if that information was available? Only by answering these questions can a manager decide what to do with the logging of data that consumes lots of resources. The main objective of our work is to analyze what type of additional information can be extracted from the server log files of an IPTV platform. Our specific focus is in trying to understand if it is possible to determine what sequences of events are triggered at the platform when a client executes a certain action. These sequences are unknown to us and are not documented by the software provider. For this work, we choose the “boot‐up action” that the user performs when he powers‐on his set‐top‐box (STB). We fully characterize that sequence of web service requests that an STB performs while booting up and logging into the IPTV platform. Then, we develop a method that can be automatically applied to isolate those sequences in the logs raw data. This method starts by defining the start event and then tries to identify the sequence’s end event by applying a set of empirical rules defined by us. The events in between constitute the sequence and while most of them are mandatory there are some events that only occur in certain cases due to the characteristics of a particular STB. Finally, after isolating the sequences, we perform a statistical analysis in order to validate the accuracy of our identification/isolation method. The methodology is developed and evaluated using a real dataset from a telecommunications company’s IPTV platform. The results confirm that the chosen method can produce an output with a high level of accuracy, taking into account the specific characteristics of the input logs data. With the additional knowledge that this method can extract from the logs data, network managers and engineers can better characterize the many users that are using the platform, establishing the typical sequence of events profiles and isolating the anomalous ones for further inspection focused both on technical and security concerns.
