Abstract:
Mobile IPTV (Internet Protocol Television) provides digital content which users watch as a television broadcast via the Internet on a mobile device. This paper presents the development of IPTV, Suan Dusit Internet Broadcasting, (SDIB) to mobile IPTV and discusses the implications for education. Mobile IPTV was developed as a prototype and designed to support users via wireless and mobile networks regardless of the mobile device. The system can be broadcasted through both live and video on demand (VOD) utilizing a mobile browser (smart phones, smart TVs, and tablets) and web browsers (Windows, Mac, and UNIX). The mobile IPTV prototype has been used and evaluated in this study. The results of student’s behavior when using mobile phones in their learning found that the highest mobile use was for Facebook and Line to communicate and share information with their classmates. The results of student’s attitudes towards using mobile phones in their learning found that the highest mobile use was for sharing information with classmates, sharing learning experiences on social networks, and using mobile phones to support their studies. The result of the IPTV and mobile IPTV system evaluation found that overall mobile IPTV had a higher user satisfaction than IPTV. Furthermore, mobile IPTV creates a good learning experience for the users. This paper provides guidelines in technical issues for helping educational institutions to develop mobile IPTV for education.

Abstract:
The design of an IPTV multicast system for the Internet backbone network is presented and explored through extensive simulations. In the proposed system, a resource reservation algorithm such as RSVP, IntServ, or DiffServ is used to reserve resources (i.e., bandwidth and buffer space) in each router in an IP multicast tree. Each router uses an Input-Queued, Output-Queued, or Crosspoint-Queued switch architecture with unity speedup. A recently proposedRecursive Fair Stochastic Matrix Decompositionalgorithm used to compute near-perfect transmission schedules for each IP router. The IPTV traffic is shaped at the sources usingApplication-Specific Token Bucker Traffic Shapers, to limit the burstiness of incoming network traffic. The IPTV traffic is shaped at the destinations usingApplication-Specific Playback Queues, to remove residual network jitter and reconstruct the original bursty IPTV video streams at each destination. All IPTV traffic flows are regenerated at the destinations with essentially zero delay jitter and essentially-perfect QoS. The destination nodes deliver the IPTV streams to the ultimate end users using the same IPTV multicast system over a regional Metropolitan Area Network. It is shown that all IPTV traffic is delivered with essentially-perfect end-to-end QoS, with deterministic bounds on the maximum delay and jitter on each video frame. Detailed simulations of an IPTV distribution system, multicasting several hundred high-definition IPTV video streams over several essentially saturated IP backbone networks are presented.

Abstract:
Technologies providing copyright-infringing IPTV content are commonly used as an illegal alternative to legal IPTV subscriptions and services, as they usually have lower monetary costs and can be more convenient for users who follow content from different sources. These infringing IPTV technologies may include websites, software, software add-ons, and physical set-top boxes. Due to the free or low cost of illegal IPTV technologies, illicit IPTV content providers will often resort to intrusive advertising, scams, and the distribution of malware to increase their revenue. We developed an automated solution for collecting and analysing malware from illegal IPTV technologies and used it to analyse a sample of illicit IPTV websites, application (app) stores, and software. Our results show that our IPTV Technologies Malware Analysis Framework (IITMAF) classified 32 of the 60 sample URLs tested as malicious compared to running the same test using publicly available online antivirus solutions, which only detected 23 of the 60 sample URLs as malicious. Moreover, the IITMAF also detected malicious URLs and files from 31 of the sample’s websites, one of which had reported ransomware behaviour.

Abstract:
With the rapid development of P2P technology, P2P IPTV applications have received more and more attention. And program resource distribution is very important to P2P IPTV applications. In order to collect IPTV program resources, a distributed multi-protocol crawler is proposed. And the crawler has collected more than 13 million pieces of information of IPTV programs from 2009 to 2012. In addition, the distribution of IPTV programs is independent and incompact, resulting in chaos of program names, which obstructs searching and organizing programs. Thus, we focus on characteristic analysis of program resources, including the distributions of length of program names, the entropy of the character types, and hierarchy depth of programs. These analyses reveal the disorderly naming conventions of P2P IPTV programs. The analysis results can help to purify and extract useful information from chaotic names for better retrieval and accelerate automatic sorting of program and establishment of IPTV repository. In order to represent popularity of programs and to predict user behavior and popularity of hot programs over a period, we also put forward an analytical model of hot programs.

Our television experience has been changing quickly, with the growing existence of new services e the delivery of real time high definition multimedia contents. To this change has contributed the technological evolution of the telecommunications networks that allow more and more the access of video, audio and data using the IP protocol (Internet Protocol). This is the base of the IPTV technology (Internet Protocol-based Television) and the associated service of this technology, the Triple-Play, where new television, internet and telephone services arrive to users homes through a single communication point, a Set-Top Box. The IMS technology (IP Multimedia Subsystem) can be integrated in the IPTV architecture allowing a service convergence not existent until these days, centralizing all the information of the network elements with the purpose of routing the data in a fast and save way between them. In this document is presented the study of these two technologies based on their architecture and the protocols that complete them. For a practical study a solution called “IPTV 2.0” was developed which allows the delivery of IPTV services from the multimedia server to the client software, taking advantage of the IMS functionalities. The solution was developed in the Media Center XBMC that makes the interface with the user. Abstract:
The distribution of television is currently dominated by three technologies: over-the-air broadcast, cable, and satellite. The advent of IP networks and the increased availability of broadband access created a new vehicle for the distribution of TV services. The distribution of digital TV services over IP networks, or IPTV, offers carriers flexibility and added value in the form of additional services. It causes therefore no surprise the rapid roll-out of IPTV services by operators worldwide in the past few years. IPTV distribution imposes stringent requirements on both performance and reliability. It is therefore challenging for an IPTV operator to guarantee the quality of experience expected by its users, and doing so in an efficient manner. In this dissertation I investigate some of the challenges faced by IPTV distribution network operators, and I propose novel techniques to address these challenges. First, I address one of the major concerns of IPTV network deployment: channel change delay. This is the latency experienced by users when switching between TV channels. Synchronisation and buffering of video streams can cause channel change delays of several seconds. I perform an empirical analysis of a particular solution to the channel change delay problem, namely, predictive pre-joining of TV channels. In this scheme each Set Top Box simultaneously joins additional multicast groups (TV channels) along with the one requested by the user. If the user switches to any of these channels next, switching latency is virtually eliminated, and user experience is improved. The results show that it is possible to eliminate zapping delay for a significant percentage of channel switching requests with little impact in access network bandwidth cost. Second, I propose a technique to increase the resource and energy efficiency of IPTV networks. This technique is based on a simple paradigm: avoiding waste. To reduce the inefficiencies of current static multicast distribution schemes, I propose a semi-dynamic scheme where only a selection of TV multicast groups is distributed in the network, instead of all. I perform an empirical evaluation of this method and conclude that its use results in significant bandwidth reductions without compromising service performance. I also demonstrate that these reductions may translate into significant energy savings in the future. Third, to increase energy efficiency further I propose a novel energy and resource friendly protocol for core optical IPTV networks. The idea is for popular IPTV traffic to optically bypass the network nodes, avoiding electronic processing. I evaluate this proposal empirically and conclude that the introduction of optical switching techniques results in a significant increase in the energy efficiency of IPTV networks. All the schemes I present in this dissertation are evaluated by means of trace-driven analyses using a dataset from an operational IPTV service provider. Such thorough and realistic evaluation enables the assessment of the proposed techniques with an increased level of confidence, and is therefore a strength of this dissertation.

Abstract:
This thesis explores how to use gamification for an IPTV platform to increase user engagement. Gamification has been defined as the use of game elements in non-game contexts. This thesis describes the fundamental concepts about gamification and taps on the practical use of these concepts for media and TV consumption. Based on interviews and an online survey we developed and evaluated low-fi prototypes to study some key aspects of Gamification for IPTV solutions. 19 people, not real users, participated in the final evaluation of the last designed low-fi prototype providing qualitative results through an evaluation survey. The result of this case study is a set of game techniques that could be valid for a platform like Ericsson Multiscreen TV, which is the base platform in this thesis. None precedent studies have been found in the research community on the use of gamification on an IPTV platform.

Abstract:
This master’s thesis project concerns implementing and evaluating Web 2.0 services for IPTV. This thesis project was carried out at Accedo Broadband during the period August to December 2008. Accedo Broadband is a provider of interactive applications and on-demand content for IPTV. The report will analyze, specify, create, and evaluate a solution for adding Web 2.0 functionality from the most popular sites as IPTV content. We will evaluate several different web services APIs and examine how suitable they are for implementation in the context of IPTV. An IPTV set-top box has limited CPU processing power, memory capacity, screen resolution is generally limited to 720 by 576 pixels, and only a limited set of input devices and interfaces are available. The IPTV set-top box receives digitally encoded audio and video content through IP and renders this content so it is viewable on an analogue TV and the audio is output via speakers. The goal of this project is to reduce the amount of integration work and configuration necessary for creating Web 2.0 IPTV applications by creating a general framework for Web 2.0 applications. We will present and evaluate the most common web programming technologies and see which are most suitable for our purposes. We have developed four different interactive demonstration services to illustrate the usage of an IPTV platform.

The telecommunication aggregation networks were initially designed to transport phone calls, using technologies based on circuit switching. The adaptation of those networks to transport data trafic has some ineficiencies, which results, that the operator`s revenues do not follow the bandwidth provided to customers. This fact has become a growing problem with the development of services such as IPTV, a service which requires high bandwidth, high transmission rate variation and point-multipoint connections. The Ethernet appears as a starting point (and ending as well, since more than 95 % of the data tra c is generated or is destinated to an Ethernet port [1]) for new aggregation network's technologies, called Carrier Ethernet technologies. This paper, presents a study of the Ethernet technology, requirements for Carrier Ethernet technologies and the promising MPLS-TP, still in the standardization process. In order to optimize IPTV service distribution, there is proposed a scenario, where it was verified that the combined use of unicast and multicast transmission can result in an eficient use of network resources.

Abstract:

Abstract:
As broadcast television has developed from analogue transmission over the air to digital transmission over cable and satellite, and today over IP networks, many new challenges as well as opportunities to develop new services has surfaced. This thesis will provide an overview of the IPTV technology with a focus on interactive services, as well as describe a prototype that has been developed to illustrate how interactivity could be implemented. It was observed that sports broadcasting was a good candidate to present additional interactive content, due to the wealth of material usually available outside of the broadcast itself, such as statistics. A prototype has been developed at TeliaSonera, an IPTV provider with roughly 400.000 customers, as a part of the Next Generation Media project at the Royal Institute of Technology (KTH). The prototype has been integrated into the existing user interface to provide management of sports highlights, enabling users to view highlights in live matches on several channels at once, without worrying about missing any of the action, even if it happens on a channel they are not currently watching. Interest has also been shown from a third party, using the developed framework for delivering events to the set-top box, and the existing code was modified to allow various types of events to be received, allowing the user to interact with the television content in different ways.

Abstract:
Internet Protocol TV (IPTV) delivers television content to users over IP-based network. Different from the traditional TV services, IPTV platforms provide users with large amount of multimedia contents with interactive and personalized services, including the targeted advertisement, on-demand content, personal video recorder, and so on. IPTV is promising since it allows to satisfy users experience and presents advanced entertainment services. On the other hand, the Next Generation Network (NGN) approach in allowing services convergence (through for instance coupling IPTV with the IP Multimedia Subsystem (IMS) architecture or NGN Non-IMS architecture) enhances users' experience and allows for more services personalization. Although the rapid advancement in interactive TV technology (including IPTV and NGN technologies), services personalization is still in its infancy, lacking the real distinguish of each user in a unique manner, the consideration of the context of the user (who is this user, what is his preferences, his regional area, location, ..) and his environment (characteristics of the users' devices 'screen types, size, supported resolution, '' and networks available network types to be used by the user, available bandwidth, ..') as well as the context of the service itself (content type and description, available format 'HD/SD', available language, ..) in order to provide the adequate personalized content for each user. This advanced IPTV services allows services providers to promote new services and open new business opportunities and allows network operators to make better utilization of network resources through adapting the delivered content according to the available bandwidth and to better meet the QoE (Quality of Experience) of clients. This thesis focuses on enhanced personalization for IPTV services following a user-centric context-aware approach through providing solutions for: i) Users' identification during IPTV service access through a unique and fine-grained manner (different from the identification of the subscription which is the usual current case) based on employing a personal identifier for each user which is a part of the user context information. ii) Context-Aware IPTV service through proposing a context-aware system on top of the IPTV architecture for gathering in a dynamic and real-time manner the different context information related to the user, devices, network and service. The context information is gathered throughout the whole IPTV delivery chain considering the user domain, network provider domain, and service/content provider domain. The proposed context-aware system allows monitoring user's environment (devices and networks status), interpreting user's requirements and making the user's interaction with the TV system dynamic and transparent. iii) Personalized recommendation and selection of IPTV content based on the different context information gathered and the personalization decision taken by the context-aware system (different from the current recommendation approach mainly based on matching content to users' preferences) which in turn highly improves the users' Quality of Experience (QoE) and enriching the offers of IPTV services

Full text
Abstract:
This Emerging Evidence Report shares evidence of how, for whom, and under what circumstances, Participatory Action Research (PAR) leads to innovative actions. A rapid realist review was undertaken to develop programme theories that explain how PAR generates innovation. The methodology included peer-reviewed and grey literature and moments of engagement with programme staff, such that their input supported the development and refinement of three resulting initial programme theories (IPTs) that we present in this report. Across all three IPTs, safe relational space, group facilitation, and the abilities of facilitators, are essential context and intervention components through which PAR can generate innovation. Implications from the three IPTs for evaluation design of the CLARISSA programme are identified and discussed. The report finishes with opportunities for the CLARISSA programme to start building an evidence base of how PAR works as an intervention modality, such as evidencing group-level conscientisation, the influence of intersecting inequalities, and influence of diverse perspectives coming together in a PAR process.
