Ebeling, Johan.
The purpose of the study is to examine the use of the NATO method known as Intelligence Preparation of the Battlespace (IPB), since the Swedish Armed Forces Headquarters in 2004 decided that interoperability with NATO methods is of high priority.
Combat on the ground, in the air and at sea is characterized by different factors. This circumstance is however not very clear in the Swedish interpretation of IPB. This shortcoming constitutes the problem that this study has looked into. IPB will be examined from a naval point of view at a tactical level. The question that has been asked is how naval tactical combat and the maritime environment influence the use of IPB.
The study uses the IPB-method itself as theoretical framework. Swedish doctrine, naval regulations and handbooks as well as modern literature on naval combat have been analysed in order to give perspectives on IPB.
It is common knowledge today that the essence of success in naval combat at a tactical level is to attack effectively first. The main conclusion is, however, that IPB, which focuses on estimates of the adversary’s courses of action, reflects this maxim poorly. The results of the study show that the intelligence output would be more adequate if IPB, when used in a naval tactical context, was concentrated on an analysis of the duel between ships.

Full textThis study analysed the quality of mouth preparations for manufacturing removable parcial dentures (RPDs) by comparing preparations made by undergraduates at Faculdade de Odontologia da Universidade de São Paulo (FOUSP) working under the supervision of staff teachers with preparations made by dentist surgeons who had sent prostheses to two dental prosthesis laboratories in São Paulo for manufacturing. Analyses were carried out in 92 models divided in two groups: group I, models obtained from patients rehabilitated by undergraduates in the subject Removable Prosthesis at FOUSP and group II, models obtained from patients rehabilitated by several professional dentist surgeons and collected at the two laboratories mentioned above. The instrument of assessment used was the modified Mouth Preparation Ratio (IPB), aiming at assessing the two groups comparatively concerning the Distribution, Location and shape of rest bite and cingulum occlusion, Presence, Distribution and Paralelism of guide planes; Characteristics of the calibration points; and the statistical difference in IPB values between the two model groups. The prevalence of the Kennedy classification (for parcially toothless patients) was also investigated in both model groups. The statitical method used in both groups was the Mann-Whitney non-parametric test. Based on the results achieved, it was concluded that mouth preparations made at Faculdade de Odontologia da Universidede de São Paulo (group I, USP models) were significantly better than those made by professional dentist surgeons who had sent their patients models to the dental laboratories for manufacturing RPDs (group II, lab models). There was no statistically significant association between both groups concerning the Kennedy classification.

This dissertation seeks to investigate the existence of a Brazilian Reformed Theology in the area of ecclesiology and its relation to culture by using the Presbyterian Church of Brazil as the object of investigation. The first part investigates how the reformer John Calvin was educated and how his humanism related to the teaching he developed, as also its possible application to Brazilian Reformed Theology, choosing common Grace to understand this relation to culture in seeking to understand how wide was its influence in his ecclesiology. In the second part, Calvinism, Puritanism and Neopuritanism are analyzed toward possible divisions or continuity. Such situations will be studied as a possible cultural influence of the practical rationalization of the Calvinists and of the relation of Calvin and the puritans with science. The third part presents Richard Shaull as a contradiction to the style of being reformed neopuritans, applical to a good part of the Brazilian reformed of the Presbyterian Church of Brazil, to the extent that he attempted to construct a Reformed Theology of Revolution that his followers, perhaps his major contribution, could transform into a Theology of Liberation. His ecclesiastical vision will be compared to that of Ashbel Green Simonton, pioneer of the Presbyterian Church of Brazil. The fourth and final part will study the construction of Reformed Theology in the Presbyterian Church of Brazil today, its possible relation to fundamentalism, beginning or not with the puritans, above all a real fear as to its Brazilianity, seeking ways to respond to the kind of ecclesiology the Reformed Theology of the Presbyterian Church of Brazil has produced.

Full textFoodborne diseases cause human, social and economic losses. Their ocurrence can be avoided chiefly by cleaning and disinfection measures in processing and manipulation premises. Inorganic chlorine compounds are among the most common chemical disinfectants used to promote microbiological food safety. However, evidences indicate that microorganisms are capable to present or develop some degree of resistance to practically every known chemical agent. So, in order to obtain data regarding chlorine compounds as a sanitary barrier, this work evaluated the sensitivity, to sodium hypochlorite, of 32 samples of Staphylococcus aureus isolated at IPB-LACEN/RS from food involved in foodborne diseases outbreaks occurred between 2002-2006. Through the suspension test, usage conditions were simulated: a 200 ppm free chlorine solution in the absence and presence of organic matter (1% UHT whole milk); a subconcentration of 100 ppm free chlorine solution; and four contact times (5, 10, 15 and 30 minutes). At the concentration of 200 ppm, in absence of organic matter, all the 32 samples were sensitive. After 10 minutes,31 of them were already inactivated. At 200 ppm, in presence of organic matter, 27 strains were resistant even after a contact of 30 minutes. At 100 ppm free chlorine concentration, simulating a sub concentration usage, it was necessary a 30 minutes contact to 24 samples demonstrate some sensitivity. It was concluded that the sensitivity of samples was influenced by concentration, presence of organic matter and contact time. In view of the experimental conditions relative to chlorine efficacy as a sanitary barrier, in foodborne diseases associated to Staphylococcus aureus, these three factors must be considered.

ABSTRACT: About 80% of the information that the human being receives is through vision. For blind people and with severe vision loss, the simplest day-today activity can become a challenge. Product identification is a common problem for these people, especially food products, whenever they need to go shopping, in the pantry at home or at each meal of the day when it is necessary to cook. To help the population with visual imparment dealing with this problem, this dissertation has as object of study, the development of an equipment/device that can solve this problem in order to give more autonomy. During the development of this study it was important to highlight themes such as “Inclusive Design”, “Product-User Interaction”, “Visual Impairment” and “Product Identification”. In methodological terms it was made, in this dissertation, a mixed nature investigation with interventionist and non-interventionist methods. A review of the literature was made, aiming to gather the theoretical bases of the study areas; It was made an analysis of study cases; a survey of the existing devices on the market was done using case studies; informal conversations were carried out, but they were essential to the development of the Project, it was also done an exploratory interview with a sampling group. Applying a non- interventionist methodology, were elaborated surveys by interview to the sampling group, a collaborator and a specialist, in order to understand what changes would be necessary for the evolution of the project. Simultaneously, and in a more practical eld of active investigation, several test models of the device were created, in which the last one, closer to what the device would actually be, was used to carry out an evaluation and simulation of its use, with the sampling group. Therefore, is expected that this process of investigation shows the importance of a better way to identify food products that facilitates the daily routine of blind or visually impaired people, giving them the desired autonomy.

+ 95% C.P.A.); T4 (10% C.L. + 90% C.P.A.); T5 (20% C.L. + 80% C.P.A.); T6 (40% C.L. + 60% C.P.A.); T7 (60% C.L.
It is important to study organic compounds in the production of T. heptaphylla seedlings, especially with problematic considered as waste compounds to urban waste -based and plant remains derived from tree pruning, as well as the type of irrigation water used. The aim of this work was to analyze the biometric characteristics and the chemical composition of T. heptaphylla seedlings developed on different substrates formed by the association between different doses of urban waste compounds (CL) and compost of prunings trees (CPA) in irrigation condition with wastewater and drinking water. The experimental design was a randomized block in a 8x2 factorial design, with eight different combinations of substrates (S): S1 (100%) commercial substrate); S2 (C.P.A. 100%); S3 (5% + 95% C.L. C.P.A.); S4 (10% + 90% C.L. C.P.A.); S5 (20% + 80% C.L. C.P.A.); S6 (40% + 60% C.L. C.P.A.); S7 (60% + 40% C.L. C.P.A.); and S8 (100% C.L.) and with irrigation with two types of water (wastewater and potable). We evaluated the shoot height, stem diameter and leaf analysis to determine the concentration of macronutrients. Treatments that provided the best development of Tabebuia heptaphylla were treatments 4 (10% CL + 90 % CPA ), 5 (20 % CL + 80 % CPA) and 6 ( 40 % CL + 60 % CPA ) . The results obtained allow to conclude that the combination of the compound of tree and garbage provide satisfactory results development of the seedlings and the use of wastewater positively influences the development of these.

Population genomics studies in Neotropical species are scarce, however, they are of great importance for the understanding of the neutral and adaptive variations, in order to develop strategies of management and conservation for the species. In this context our objective was to verify the role of natural selection in the distribution of populations diversity in Handroanthus serratifolius and Tabebuia aurea. Here, we study population genomics based in sequence capture using 24,751 pre-developed probes. For H serratifolius were sampled c. 64,000 SNPs in 144 individuals from 16 populations. For T aurea were sampled c. 18,000 SNPs in 48 individuals from 6 populations. Genetic differentiation was high (FST = 0.194, p <0.001) in H. serratifolius and intermediate (FST = 0.144, p <0.001) in T. aurea. The inbreeding coefficient was low in both species, however, in three populations of H. serratifolius it was intermediate or high. The genetic structure of populations presented two genetic groups for the populations sampled in the two species. H. serratifolius with high genetic differentiation and T. aurea with admixture in all populations. We did not find SNPs outliers in the distribution of FST values, due to the wide distribution of values found for the populations of the two species. In the search for correlation between environmental variables and changes in allelic frequency H. serratifolius presented only three SNPs, inside six genes and T. aurea presented 16 SNPs, inside 25 genes. The functional annotation of these genes showed relationship with molecular processes, transposable elements and one in T. aurea related to resistance to diseases. In conclusion, our data show a selection signal in H. serratifolius for only three loci with local adaptation signal. In T. aurea our data show a greater number of locos (16 locos) with local adaptation signal.

Full textHandroanthus chrysotrichus is a Brazilian native forest species which presents several important aspects both under the economic and ecological points of view, because its ability to provide timber products as well as for being indicated for degraded and permanent preservation areas recovery. Its seeds present problems concerning loss of viability when subjected to storage. This way, micropropagation emerges as an alternative for the species propagation. However, some characteristics inherent in in vitro grown plants may promote physiological and anatomic changes in tissues under that condition. Thus, the aim of this study was to evaluate aspects related to micropropagation and leaf anatomy of H. chrysotrichus. Firstly, health and germination tests were applied to seeds from different lots of that species. As for in vitro multiplication of H. chrysotrichus explants, different sources and concentrations of cytokines combined or not with auxin were tested, as well as the influence of successive subculture execution on multiplication rates. Aspects concerning leaf senescence of sprouts maintained in vitro in Woody Plant Medium (WPM) were also assessed. Concerning rooting in vitro, different concentrations of 3-Indolebutyric acid (IBA) combined with the presence or absence of vermiculite in ½ WPM were tested and, later, the ex vitro acclimatization of plants micropropagated was assessed. Finally, the test was conducted in order to compare the leaf anatomy of H. chrysotrichus plants grown in vivo, in vitro and acclimatized. The seed lots of H. chrysotrichus showed differences in health quality and geminal capacity of the seeds. As for in vitro multiplication of H. chrysotrichus, the use of cytokinins was not considered necessary. High rates of in vitro multiplication were obtained, when considered in vitro formation of buds. As for leaf senescence, the species showed great potential, remaining long periods in the same nutrient medium. There was rooting in vitro in more than 50% of the shoots cultivated in the presence of vermiculite, regardless IBA concentration. It was not possible to satisfactorily promote the acclimatization of micropropagated plants, as only 7.12% of the seedlings survived. Differences in leaf anatomy of plants grown in vivo, in vitro or acclimatized were verified. The results can contribute with information about H. chrysotrichus, concerning aspects related to its in vitro culture and leaf anatomy of the tissues grown in different environments.

Paraíba Federal Institute of Technology, Science, and Education IFPB is a part of the Brazilian educational system which has the scientific and technological development as its final activity. It offers technological and professional education in different modalities of teaching and intends to carry out applied research having its human resources organized in groups in order to develop research activities and reinforce knowledge. This research that presents the production indicators of these groups registered at the board of the National Council of Technological and Scientific Development CNPq, and qualified by the IFPB originates from the question: does the IFPB know of the production of its research groups? This questioning takes us to the objective: to get to know the scientific production and the technological results achieved by the research groups. This theme is relevant to the Information Science CI as an area that studies the dynamics of generation, collection, organization, storage, retrieval, interpretation, transmission, transformation, and utilization of information and the relation between information and knowledge leading to studies about technological and scientific production. The object of study is the 24 research groups of the IFPB created by the teaching staff s demands from 1994 onward and named according to the Knowledge Area Table of the Higher Education Staff s Assessment Coordination Capes. The data was manually collected from the résumés that are available at the Lattes Platform from 1994 to 2008 and are displayed by groups classified from 1 to 24 followed by the formation year. The analysis was carried out via the quantitative aspects of the production, dissemination and use of the registered information and applied to production assessment, subdivided into two periods, 1994/2000 and 2001/2008, and by the groups with 10 or more human resources and groups with 5 or less ones. In numerical terms, the groups technological and scientific production presents meaningful indicators with a significant involvement of the students; with the total number of 2.140 journal publications and 536 magazine articles. These media are the most used to disseminate scientific knowledge and technological results. There is 32 software, 5 technological products, and 13 processes or techniques without registration or patent. The groups research projects presented 6 cancelled ones, 106 finished, and 108 in progress. The groups, when developing projects, managed to get partnership and funding from renowned agencies which prove the relevance of the developed projects. We conclude that the production presented meaningful indicators, a result of research development with subsequent publication of the results and that it does not necessarily mean that the quantity of human resources has any direct relation with the production. These indicators justify the activities of the research groups to the IFPB formulate, follow and assess the research policies so that strategies are implemented aiming at a renewal of the researches, the expansion of the quantity of the research groups, and also enabling students and technicians participation as well as motivating the funding by the public aid agencies.

Annually, more than 15 million U.S. children witness intimate partner violence (IPV) in their homes between caregivers. Witnessing IPV during childhood has been associated with increased risk of adulthood IPV victimization, although this relationship has most commonly been examined among older populations of white adults (McKinney, Caetano, Ramisetty-Mikler, & Nelson, 2009; Straus, 1989; Whitfield, Anda, Dube, & Felitti, 2003), not minority women who experience a disproportionately high burden of IPV victimization (Breiding, Chen, & Black, 2014). It also is unclear whether there are specific characteristics of childhood witnessing of IPV that may aid in understanding the increased probability of IPV victimization observed among young, minority women. This study examined associations between four characteristics of childhood witnessing of IPV (direction of violence witnessed, academic disruption, fearfulness, and frequency) and adulthood physical and sexual IPV victimization. Further, psychosocial moderators of these associations were examined. Existing data collected from 315 women residing in North Philadelphia were analyzed. Overall, 28% of women witnessed IPV during childhood and nearly one in four women reported IPV victimization. Among these women there was diversity with regards to the characteristics of witnessing reported. Unadjusted associations observed that women who witnessed bidirectional IPV, experienced academic disruption, or reported fearful witnessing were significantly more likely to experience adulthood IPV victimization than women who did not witness IPV during childhood. After adjusting for covariates, these witnessing characteristics were no longer significantly associated with adulthood IPV victimization; however, the risk of adulthood IPV victimization was consistently related to current depressive symptoms and substance use. Modest support for effect modification by low self-esteem was observed. A significant difference in the predicted probability of adulthood IPV victimization was observed among women reporting bidirectional childhood witnessing of IPV and high self-esteem in adulthood compared to women reporting bidirectional witnessing and low self-esteem (difference=0.51, 95% CI: 0.06, 0.95, p=0.027). Childhood abuse was associated with greater probability of adulthood IPV victimization regardless of the frequency of childhood witnessing of IPV (aOR=5.8, 95% CI: 2.2, 13.6). Given the high prevalence of childhood witnessing of IPV observed in this study, these findings highlight the importance of screening for childhood IPV witnessing. In addition, these results suggest particular groups of urban women who may be at highest risk for adulthood IPV victimization, including those experiencing depressive symptoms, substance use, and a history of childhood abuse. Identifying adolescents and young adults with these characteristics and providing early prevention services may reduce the probability of future IPV victimization among young, sexually active urban women. Additionally, examining the role of low self-esteem during child- and adulthood may inform efforts to prevent IPV victimization. These findings highlight the need for prospective, longitudinal studies of urban children and adolescents to examine the complex causal pathways between childhood witnessing of IPV, psychosocial characteristics, and adulthood IPV victimization.

Full textWith globalisation, translation has become an increasingly important activity in several branches of our society. A good example is the role translation plays in international multilingual institutions in conveying their messages in an efficient manner. Translation is equally relevant when an institution aims at becoming more international and at receiving foreign communities. That is the case of the Polytechnic Institute of Bragança whose goal is to secure, and expand, a leading position in this field by having its digital platforms and regulations translated into English, so that every student has an equal opportunity to access the documents that govern the operations of the institution. That being said, this project, carried out within the Master in Translation, focuses on the translation of the most relevant regulations for international students, as well as on the translation of the enrolment and the On-line Service of the Office of Academic Affairs platforms that sustain them. It also includes a theoretical component directed at legal translation and its importance in an institutional context. The purpose of translating the documents is to grant international students access to all the rules they must abide by within the receiving institution, whereas the translation of the digital platforms is a means to implement the legislation written by the Polytechnic Institute of Bragança. This makes the institution more appealing to international students and contributes to an efficient academic environment.

Full textThis report is the result of an internship carried out within the Master of Translation at the Image and Student Support Office (GIAPE) from the Polytechnic Institute of Bragança (IPB). The main topic of this work is the role of translation within institutional communication, with a special focus on the IPB. Institutional communication is one the main concerns in higher education in Portugal, due to its need to attract students and several types of target audiences on the national and international levels. It is also important to establish a positive image in the market. Adopting an Integrated Marketing Communication strategy can help higher education institutions enhance their competitiveness and increase their market share at national and international levels. In order to implement that strategy, it is necessary to adapt contents and promotional materials to the target countries. Therefore, translation assumes a fundamental role in the overall strategy of higher education institutions. The completed internship tried to respond to these assumptions. This report concentrates on some of the marketing features adopted by the IPB and analyses how translation appears and interferes with institutional communication. Apart from that, a link between institutional communication and Translation Studies is established by referring to some rather recent theoretical approaches which underlie this kind of communication. Finally, the outcome of this internship is contemplated taking into account the way the IPB might consider translation in the future and also an eventual professionalization in its institutional communication services. The outcome concerns not only the tasks and projects developed at GIAPE, but also a reflection accomplished within the perspective of institutional translation.
