Abstract:
In this thesis the state of the art for IP networks and the two most predominant wireless access networks, UMTS and Wireless LANs, has been reviewed with respect to the enhancements required toward the objective of supporting services across different network technologies in a seamless manner. Three main areas of research were identified as key in the path toward All-IP networks: i) IP-based mobility management, ii) IP-based UMTS Radio Access Networks and iii) QoS for Wireless LANs.

Future All-IP networks require of an IP-based mobility management protocol to support mobility across heterogeneous networks. Several protocols are being proposed in the IETF for this purpose with Mobile IPv6, Hierarchical Mobile IPv6 and Fast Handovers for Mobile IPv6 being the ones with a higher acceptance. Our contribution in this area has been the thorough study of the performance enhancements provided by each protocol and their associated costs in realistic scenarios to support the design process of Mobile IPv6-based networks where the suitability of the different options has to be evaluated. In addition, we proposed a combination of Hierarchical Mobile IPv6 and Fast Handovers for Mobile IPv6, based on the description provided in the Hierarchical Mobile IPv6 draft, that aims to outperform both proposals by adding the advantages of each of them.

During the evaluation of the IP-based mobility management protocols, the mobility model influence over the performance results led to an additional line of study where the main characteristics of the Random Waypoint mobility model were analyzed. The random waypoint model is a commonly used mobility model for simulations of wireless communication networks. We gave a formal description of this model in terms of a discrete- time stochastic process which provides a deep understanding on the characteristics of the mobility created by its usage. The results of our work are of practical value for performance analysis of communication networks to avoid misinterpretation of simulation results.

UMTS networks being deployed today based on the Release'99 specifications use ATM transport in the Radio Access Network (RAN). The specifications for future releases include options to support IP transport in the RAN, however, several challenges are introduced with regard to a significant increase in the transport protocol overhead and the provision of QoS guarantees. These challenges have to be addressed to ensure an efficient usage of the scarce RAN resources. Our work focused first in reducing the resources needed in the air interface for the expected most relevant application in future 3G networks, Voice over IP (VoIP). We designed a radio access bearer for VoIP when Robust Header Compression (RoHC) is used that reduces in about 50% the resources required in the air interface. Then, a multiplexing scheme for the reduction of the overhead in the wired part of the RAN that allows QoS differentiated scheduling was described and evaluated. The results showed an increase in the efficiency of the RAN resources usage between 100% and 260%, in our scenarios, when combined with RoHC. Finally, we proposed and evaluated a QoS differentiated scheduling mechanism based on Earliest-Deadline-First that fulfills the RAN specific synchronization requirements while providing the QoS differentiation required by the applications.

The IEEE 802.11 standard presents relevant defficiencies in order to support applications with QoS requirements. The integration of the Wireless LAN technology in future All-IP networks heavily depends on the success of the upcoming 802.11e standard which extends the 802.11MAC layer to provide QoS guarantees. With our work in this area we contributed to the 802.11e research standardization effort and designed three extensions of the 802.11 MAC layer to provide delay guarantees (DIME-EF) and bandwidth guarantees, absolute (ARME) or relative (DWFQ).
Moreover, we analyzed the implications of introducing Wireless LAN capabilities in battery limited mobile devices as for example cellular phones. Based on the significant impact observed of the 802.11 power save mode over the 802.11e QoS mechanisms we designed and evaluated a solution that provides a soft upper bound of the data frames downlink delay according to the downlink frame interarrival time while minimizing the battery consumption. Part of this work has been used for the design and configuration of the NEC 3G/WLAN mobile terminal N900iL.

Physical network maps are important to critical infrastructure defense and planning. Current state-of-the-art network infrastructure geolocation relies on Domain Name System (DNS) inferences. However, not only is using the DNS relatively in accurate for infrastructure geolocation, many router interfaces lack DNS name entries. We adapt the technique of Wang et al. to send trace route probes from distributed vantage points, and approximate a target’s location by finding the nearest landmark. To evaluate the technique’s performance, we geolocate router interfaces previously geolocated via DNS-based router positioning (DRoP). Our results show that 50% of the targets have error distances greater than 2,400 km; however, 75% of the nearest landmark predictions are less than 5 ms distant. We find that geolocation accuracy is insensitive to vantage point location, while the use of more vantage points improves accuracy. To better understand these results, we use Constraint-based Geolocation (CBG) on a subset of DRoP predictions. Forty-six percent of 4,638 DRoP location inferences are in regions outside the feasible physical boundaries imposed by CBGand 56% are 1,800 km away from the CBG centroid. Our findings suggest that our methodology can supplement prior work to not only geolocate infrastructure without DNS names, but also improve accuracy.

Abstract:
The goal of this thesis is to design a system which would allow video data streaming from a mobile device and real time playback using a standard web browser. The technological background and the implementation platform are both part of this thesis. Web Real Time Communications (WebRTC) technology was used for acquiring multimedia data on mobile device. This technology is natively supported in the latest major web browsers and in WebView component (Android version 5.0 and above). Sending push notifications from a server to a mobile device to start the streaming is done with Google Cloud Messaging technology. The resultant system allows a user to start the application on mobile device with easy web browser access. This starts the multimedia stream from device, which can be parametrized and secured by password. The benefit of this thesis is the overview of WebRTC technology and its demonstration. The IP camera implementation shows how easy it is to use the WebRTC in real applications.

Abstract:
The thesis aims to implement different digital filters such as finite impulse response (FIR), infinite impulse response (IIR) and cascade integrator comb (CIC) on the field-programmable gate array (FPGA) development board using hardware description language (VHDL). To this purpose, Intel’s systems integration tool Platform designer is used to convert the implementation to an IP core. The implemented FIR and IIR filters include different filter types such as lowpass, highpass, bandpass and bandstop. All the filters have a pipeline architecture as well as adjustable parameters such as filter order, frequency specifications and resolution. The coefficients of the filters are calculated according to the user's specifications. The calculated coefficients are verified using simulation. Furthermore the IP has been validated on hardware by the FPGA board MAX DE-10 lite. The IP is also analyzed regarding timing and power consumtion with good results. FIR filters of different types have been implemented and tested up to 501 taps with a coefficient width of 24 bits, which covered just below 50% of the available logic gates on the MAX 10-DE lite board with 50000 gates in total. The FIR filters have an option to be used with a Kaiser window with a maximum tap level of 51. Different IIR filters have also been implemented and tested on the hardware. However, the results have shown that the IIR filters do not perform so well, especially those of order higher than 6. One of the main reasons for this is the overflow caused by instability of the IIR.

This Master’s thesis deals with IMS architecture problems. This thesis describes its creation and progress, also structure of this architecture is mentioned. Text of this thesis describes function of the most important parts of the architecture, such as Proxy-CSCF, Interrogating-CSCF, Serving-CSCF and HSS. IMS architecture uses SIP protocol for establishment, maintenance and closing session and Diameter protocol for network management functions. That is why this thesis also describes characteristics of these two protocols. Next part of the thesis is focused on Open-source platform Open IMS Core and its installation. Open IMS Core platform was developed for testing IMS technologies within an internal project at the Fraunhofer Institute FOKUS in Berlin. Nowadays it is used by major part of vendors and providers for testing their products and services. As a main theme of this thesis, there was made a simple network, which consists of three users. This network is established on fundamentals of IMS and it was made in Open IMS Core. So in one chapter is outlined a process of its creation. There is described a process of adding a user list to database server HSS. In the next part there are mentioned some information about setup of virtual IMS terminal. Eventually there are shown some possibilities of how to catch traffic in the network. In this chapter there are also state diagrams, which describe a process of registration of IMS terminal and also a process of establishment, maintenance and closing session.

The master thesis „IP traffic performance“ is focused on traffic testing in IP networks. Theoretical section explains routing issue in an autonomous system. This work contains a detailed description of OSPF protocol. This work also deals with behavior of a link failure. There are described mechanisms that are used to link failure detection and subsequent traffic rerouting. The next section describes mechanisms to ensure quality of service. In master thesis are explained InterServ and DiffServ mechanisms. A large part is devoted to DiffServ mechanism that ensures distinction of data flows and classification packets into different classes. The routers than can process the individual data streams with different priorities. The practical section includes the design of experimental network and creation of simulation in Opnet Modeler. By using several scenarios are compared the characteristics of routing protocols and impact of QoS on the transmission characteristics of the network. Part of practical section is the improvement of OSPF protocol by adding a new metric and implementing a new metric in software suite Quagga.

Större krav på fler IP-adresser i framtiden har gjort IP(v6) till en tänkbar efterträdare till IP(v4). Sedan utvecklingen av IP(v6) runt 1994 står den fortfarande i skuggan av IP(v4). Detta beror troligen på att IP(v6) inte är bakåtkompatibelt med IP(v4), vilket leder till hög kostnad och energi att ersätta världens nätverk med IP(v6). Detta problem har gjort att ett flertal övergångstekniker har utvecklats. Detta kan vara genom att använda IP(v6) genom en dedikerad tunnel till att använda IP(v4) och IP(v6) parallellt.  Dessa övergångstekniker skiljer sig åt när det gäller funktion och användningsområde, vilket gör val av övergångsteknik svårt.

Denna rapport handlar om dessa övergångstekniker. En inblick ges genom att beskriva hur dessa är uppbyggda, deras för- och nackdelar samt vilket användningsområde dessa är passade för. Förhoppningsvis kan denna kunskap användas för att lättare förstå hur IP(v6) fungerar och hur ett val kan göras.

Abstract:
The mass popularization of telecommunication services in recent years have resulted in a heavily loaded signaling network. The Signaling System number 7 (SS7) is used in fixed and wireless networks and is needed for call control and services such as caller ID, roaming, and for sending SMS. The traditional SS7 networks are expensive to lease and to expand, hence a new suite of protocols have been designed to carry signaling messages over IP. This suite contains a transport protocol called Stream Control Transmission Protocol (SCTP) and various user adaptation layer protocols such as M2PA, M2UA, M3UA, and SUA. To transport the highly loss and delay sensitive signaling messages over IP, it is mandatory that the transport protocol meets the high performance requirements of SS7. Not before the IP-solution has been tested in detail, will it replace significant parts of the national telephone network. In this thesis, the failover duration in the case of link failure was tested using the feature of SCTP called multi-homing. The results suggest that carrying SS7 signaling traffic over IP is possible, since the failover duration does not exceed the required limit.
Under de senaste åren har telekommunikationstjänster blivit allt mer populära, vilket har lett till ett tungt belastat signaleringsnätverk. The Signaling System number 7 (SS7) används i fasta och trådlösa nätverk och behövs för att kontrollera telefonsamtal och för tjänster såsom caller ID, roaming och för att skicka SMS. De traditionella SS7- nätverken är dyra att hyra och att expandera, varför en ny grupp av protokoll har designats för att bära signaleringsmeddelanden över IP. De nya protokollen innehåller ett transportprotokoll som heter Stream Transmission Control Protocol (SCTP) och flera adaptionslagerprotokoll, bl.a. M2PA, M2UA, M3UA och SUA. För att transportera de förlust- och förseningskänsliga signaleringsmeddelandena över IP, måste transportprotokollet möta de höga krav som SS7 har. Inte förrän IP-lösningen har testats ingående, kommer den att ersätta betydelsefulla delar av det nationella telefonnätet. I detta examensarbete har failovertiden mätts då en nätverkslänk mellan två noder har utsatts för ett avbrott. Resultaten pekar på att det är möjligt att bära SS7-trafik över IP eftersom failovertidskraven inte överstigs.

Abstract:

The final thesis named Tracking in Sensor Networks was created by the company Instrument control Sweden. The thesis work is to create a plug-in to an already developed software pro- gram, SkyView. Via the software program one should be able to control an IP-camera from AXIS, model 215 PTZ, with the appropriate protocol over a network.  An Application Programming Interface, API, was used to easily control the camera through SkyView. The interface is called VAPIX and is used to all cameras from AXIS. VAPIX sup- ports Hyper Text Transfer Protocol, HTTP, and Real Time Streaming Protocol, RTSP.  The video was sent through the camera with RTSP, thus an investigation resulted in that the protocol was best suited at streaming video. Steering commands to the camera was sent via HTTP. A small program was written, which was then integrated to SkyView. Features to be able to control the camera with the keyboard, mouse and a joystick were implemented. Zoom, bright- ness, focus and some more features were also added. The problem with the delay should be dealt with as soon as possible.

I do through this thesis aim to reflect upon the reasonableness to why one should write a thesis. I do this by sharing with you four different parts. The first part is that of foragers and our common human heritage. The second one is set in the middle ages and the foundation of universities. In the third part the modern research university is examined whilst the fourth part aims to provide a sensible understanding of today. I do look at the reasonableness to undergo the work for a thesis in all of these parts whilst proposing an idea concerning human confusion and our need for belonging which leads us to believe in an imperative prerogative (IP) which may be said to be the context in which we find ourselves.The IP would further dictate what knowledge is and is not, which would highly relate to the reasonableness of conducting a thesis. In an IP there are various stories, and one of them is that of education and writing a thesis. I ask of you as a reader to reflect upon and view our current higher educational system in a historical perspective. I, thus, aim not to provide you with innovative new knowledge in business but rather to reflect upon our current educational system in our society, which I would argue, is taken over by the businesses and its rules and norms.

This report considers the problems with positioning of emergency telephone calls. Emergency calls to the emergency number “112” answered by the emergency service in Sweden cannot always be positioned. That is, it cannot be decided where the call is coming from. The problem with positing of emergency calls is mainly caused by emergency calls coming from Internet Protocol (IP) telephones. Since the use of IP telephones are increasing the number of emergency calls coming from IP telephones will increase. For the emergency service to provide a secure and reliable service to the public it is crucial that all emergency calls can be positioned correctly. The report explains how emergency calls are connected towards the emergency service in Sweden, from the different types of telephones that support emergency calls. For the traditional fixed land line all emergency calls can be positioned, when using a mobile telephone 90% of the emergency calls can be positioned. The IP telephones can be divided into two categories, fixed and nomadic. When a fixed IP telephone is used the emergency call can always be positioned correctly, the problem occurs when a nomadic IP telephone is used. Interviews have been held with the four largest IP telephone operators to get their views of the problem and whether they have an opinion on how to solve the problem. Practical tests have been performed to show the problem and when it occurs. To solve the problem with positioning of emergency calls coming from IP telephones an international standard must be set. New features needs to be implemented in the networks so that the calls coming from IP telephones can be positioned and utilize positioning features such as GPS. A lot of work still remains before an international standard can be set.

Abstract:
This thesis was about investigating if it is feasible to implement an IP-forwarding data plane on a GPU. A GPU is energy efficient compared to other more powerful processors on the market today and should in theory be efficient to use for routing purposes. An IP-forwarding data plane consist of several things where we focused on some of the concepts. We have implemented IP-forwarding lookup operations, packet header changes, prioritization between different packets and a traffic shaper to restrict the packet throughput. To test these concepts we implemented a prototype, on a Tegra platform, in CUDA and evaluated its performance. We are able to forward 28 Mpackets/second with a best case latency of 27 µS given local simulated packets. The conclusions we can draw of this thesis work is that using a GPU for IP-forwarding purposes seems like an energy efficient solution compared to other routers on the market today. In the thesis we also tried the concept of only launching the GPU kernel once and let it be infinite which shows promising results for future work.

IP telephony is defined as the transport of telephony calls over an IP network. IP telephony exploits the integration of voice and data networks. However, enterprises are still reluctant to deploy IP telephony despite the potential increase in productivity and reduction of costs. If so, are its proclaimed benefits such as flexibility and mobility cost-effective? The aim of this thesis is to analyze how to deploy IP telephony in large corporations - while providing the necessary security and facilitating mobility. Through the different parts of this thesis, we will analyze the applicable technologies, along with their integration and management. We will focus on the essential requirements for an enterprise of scalability, reliability, flexibility, high-availability, and cost-effectiveness. The massive changes brought about due to the deregulation of telecommunications in nearly all countries, the increasingly global nature of business, and the progressively affordable and power technology underlying information and communication technologies have lead to increasing adoption of IP telephony by residential and commercial users. This thesis will examine these technologies in the context of a very large distributed corporation.
IP telefoni är definierat som transporten av telefon samtal genom ett IP nätverk. IP telefoni utnyttjar integrationen av tal och data nätverk. Dock är affärsföretag fortfarande motsträviga till att införa IP telefoni trots potentiell ökning i produktivitet och minskade kostnader. Huvud bekymren är: kan IP telefoni tillhandahålla samma nivå av prestanda med avseende på säkerhet, tillförlitlighet, och skalbarhet som traditionell telefoni? Och i så fall, är dom proklamerade fördelarna flexibilitet och rörlighet kostnadseffektiva? Målet för detta examensarbete är att analysera hur IP telefoni kan införas i stora affärsföretag - medan samtidigt tillhandahålla nödvändig säkerhet och främja rörlighet. Genom olika delar av detta examensarbete, analyserar vi tillämpliga teknologier, inklusive deras integrering och skötsel. Vi kommer att fokusera på de grundläggande kraven för ett affärsföretag gällande skalbarhet, tillförlitlighet, flexibilitet, hög tillgänglighet, och kostnadseffektivitet. Dom massiva förändringarna frambringade i och med avregleringen av telekommunikation i stort sett alla länder, affärsverksamhetens alltmer globala natur, och de progressivt kostnadseffektiva och kraftfulla underliggande teknologier bakom informations och kommunikations system har lett till ökande adoptering av IP telefoni av både privata och kommersiella användare. Detta examensarbete undersöker relevanta teknologier i samband med mycket stora utbredda affärsföretag.

Nos últimos anos apareceu uma proposta para tornar mais flexível o controlo e evolução das redes, através de uma aproximação que se veio a designar Software Defined Networking (SDN). Uma das vantagens advém do facto de existir um servidor logicamente centralizado que controla um conjunto de switches. Esta dissertação apresenta um trabalho que consistiu em introduzir numa rede controlada por um controlador SDN diversas novas funcionalidades com o objectivo de optimizar, tanto quanto possível, o funcionamento de uma rede de switches Ethernet, de tal forma que seja mais realista geri-la como uma única subnet IP, mesmo numa rede com grande número de utilizadores. Estas optimizações reduzem a utilização de difusão pelo protocolo ARP, encaminham o tráfego unicasting usando o caminho mais curto na rede (funcionalidade já implementada geralmente nos controladores) e encaminham o tráfego multicasting usando uma árvore de difusão óptima por grupo IP e por emissor. Para a implementação desta última funcionalidade foi também necessário introduzir uma implementação do protocolo IGMP. O tratamento da segurança, que esteve na origem da aproximação SDN, não foi objecto deste trabalho.

Master 's thesis deals about computer networks, which constitutes a global communication structure and play a very important role in today's society. The rapid development of Internet, the emergence of new multimedia applications and their increasing use of calls to the efficient functioning of the creation of such governance mechanisms of transmission, which are able to secure the required parameters. The thesis deals about the issue of quality of service (QoS) in IP networks. It presents the basic characteristics and requirements of these networks for the transmission of sensitive data by the quality of services, deals with the QoS definition, and describes the essential parameters to be followed to achieve the required quality of service in practical deployment. In addition, lists the various principles and options to ensure QoS in computer networks. Generally, it represents the Cisco 1841 router features and options to ensure quality of service in the network based on these routers. Practical thesis part provides two types of model IP networks, which were designed in order to verify the impact of service quality in real practice. Of the known methods to ensure QoS, which include a mechanism of Integrated services, Differentiated services, it focus its content about the Differentiated Services and the implementation of these in proposed network model. The last part of the work presents the results obtained by the impact of quality of service for the applications and their assessment.

Wireless networking introduces a whole range of challenges to the traditional TCP/IP network. In particular, IP address the issue of overloading because IP addresses are used as a network locator and an end point identity in the different layers in an OSI model. Even though Mobile IP is widely deployed, it has significant problems relating to performance and security. The Host Identity Protocol (HIP) provides secure mobility management by solving the IP address overloading from another angle. It restructures the TCP/IP model and introduces a new layer and a new namespace. The performance of HIP has proven to be better than Mobile IP and also opens a range of new research opportunities. This dissertation proposes and analyses a new step-stone solution from the Mobile IP-based network into a HIP-based network. The main advantage of this new solution is that much less change is required to the operating system kernel of the end point compared to a full HIP implementation. The new step-stone solution allows Mobile IP to use some HIP features to provide better security and handover performance. This dissertation also proposes several new and novel HIP-based wireless communication network architectures. An HIP-based heterogeneous wireless network architecture and handover scheme has been proposed and analysed. These schemes limit the HIP signalling in the wireless network if no communication to external networks is needed. Beside the network architecture modification, the hybrid Session Initial Protocol (SIP) and HIP-based Voice over IP (VoIP) scheme is proposed and analysed. This novel scheme improves the handover latency and security. This dissertation also proposes and analyses a new and novel extension to HIP, a HIP-based micro-mobility management, micro-HIP (mHIP). mHIP provides a new secure framework for micro-mobility management. It is a more complete HIP-based micro-mobility solution than any other proposed in existing studies. mHIP improves the intra-domain handover performance, the security, and the distribution of load in the intra-domain handover signalling. The new work presented opens up a number of very interesting research opportunities.

The past few years have seen great increases in the use of portable devices like laptops, palmtops, etc. This has also led to the dramatic increase demand on wireless local area networks (WLAN) due to the flexibility and ease of use that it offers. Mobile IP and handover are important issues to be considered as these devices move within and between different networks and still have to maintain connectivity. It is, therefore, imperative to ensure seamless mobile IP handover for these devices as they move about.

In this thesis we undertake a survey to describe the real processes involved in mobile IP handover in WLAN environment for different scenarios. Our work also identifies individual sources of delay during the handoff process, the sum total of which makes up the total latency. Other factors that could militate against the aim of having a seamless handoff in an inter-subnet network roaming were also considered as well as some proposed solutions. These factors are security, packet loss and triangle routing.

In today's world, more and more phone calls are made over IP. This results in an increasing demand for scalable IP telephony equipment.

Ingate Systems AB produces firewalls specialized in handling IP telephony. They have an inherent limit in the number of concurrent phone calls that they can handle. This can be a bottleneck at high loads. There is a load balancing solution available in the platform, but it has a number of drawbacks, such as media latency and client capability requirements, limiting its usage.

Many companies provide load balancing solutions for SIP. However, it appears few handle all the problematic scenarios that the Ingate firewall does. This master's thesis aims to add load balancing functionality to the Ingate firewall, so that it can handle all types of clients.

By splitting the firewall into two completely separate layers - a SIP layer and a firewall layer - the concept of a virtual machine emerges. A machine is no longer restricted to its physical SIP and firewall layers. Instead, virtual machines are used to process calls. They still have SIP and firewall layers, but the layers can reside on different physical machines.

This thesis demonstrates the operation of an innovative load balancing implementation. The implementation was evaluated, and using four machines the test setup performed 50% better than the original Ingate platform, while still retaining all functionality -- something that was not possible with the original platform. This surpassed both the company's and my own expectations.

As applications like IPTV and VoD (Video on demand) are gaining popularity, it is becoming more important to study the behavior of video signals in the Internet access infrastructures such as ADSL and cable networks. Average delay, average jitter and packet loss in these networks affect the quality of service, hence transmission and access speeds need to be determined such that these parameters are minimized. In this study the behavior of the above mentioned IP networks under variable bit rate (VBR) video traffic is investigated. ns-2 simulator is used for this purpose and actual as well as artificially generated signals are applied to the networks under test. Variable bit rate (VBR) traffic is generated synthetically using ON/OFF sources with ON/OFF times taken from exponential or Pareto distributions. As VBR video shows long range dependence with a Hurst parameter between 0.5 and 1, this parameter was used as a metric to measure the accuracy of the synthetic sources. Two different topologies were simulated in this study: one similar to ADSL access networks and the other behaving like cable distribution network. The performance of the networks (delay, jitter and packet loss) under VBR video traffic and different access speeds were measured. According to the obtained results, minimum access speeds in order achieve acceptable quality video delivery to the customers were suggested.

The Voice over IP (VoIP) technology has become prevalent today due to its lower cost than traditional telephony and its ability to support new value-added services. Additionally, the increasing availability of wireless internet access has led to research studies examining the combination of wireless network access with voice over IP. With the widespread availability of advanced mobile phones and Pocket PCs, the need for VoIP applications on these mobile platforms is tangible. To enable this, we need to evaluate the current wireless access technologies to see if they can support the necessary traffic and implement software to offer these VoIP services to users. In order to easily implement an IP-based service on GSM technology, we should use the GPRS service provided by the GSM operators. In this thesis, we evaluate Voice over IP service over GPRS in terms of feasibility and quality. Following this we ported a locally developed VoIP program to a Pocket PC (with GSM SIM-card support) which runs Microsoft’s Windows Mobile in order to provide suitable software as needed to offer the service from such a portable device.
VoIP tekniken har blivit en rådande teknik numera på grund av dess lägre kostnader och mervärdestjänster som erbjuds jämfört med traditional telefoni. Samtidigt som tendensen mot mer tillgänglig trådlöst internet har underlättat och därmed driver mera studier inom dessa områden. Den allt mer utbredda användningen av avancerade mobiltelefoner och handdatorer numera har lett till ökat behov av att använda VoIP tekniken för dessa mobila utrustningar är alltmer kännbar. För att möjliggöra användadet av VoIP tekniken så behöver vi först och främst utvärdera dagens existerande teknologier för att stödja iden och för det andra måste vi kunna implementera en mjukvara vilket kan erbjuda olika typer av tjänster för slutanvändaren. För att kunna använda en IP-baserad tjänst på GSM teknologin så måste vi använda oss utan GPRS tjänster som tillhandahålls av GSM opratörer. I detta examens arbete kommer vi att utvärdera VoIP tjänster på GPRS när det gäller kvalitet och möjligheter. Därefter kommer vi att Portning en VoIP mjukvara till en handdator (utrustad med GSM sim-kort) vilket har windows Mobile operativsystemet som erbjuder en rad olika tjänster.

In this thesis, the requirements of mobile networking and transparent service are discussed. A survey of existing technologies for IP roaming is provided. IETF Mobile IP is the most favorable solution available today. However Mobile IP has some limitations: (a) It does not provide transparent service to mobile hosts, i.e. it requires modifications to EP stack in mobile hosts. (b) It is targeted to the wireless mobile hosts in carrier markets, which brings much unnecessary complexity for the enterprise environment, especially for semi-mobile hosts. (c) The handoff of Mobile IP introduces service disruption to IP traffic. To address the issues, a new framework and suite of protocols are proposed. The solution is termed Roaming IP. Roaming IP is targeted for roaming service in enterprise networks which have both semi and full-mobile hosts. To achieve the goals of transparency, fast handoff and simplicity, some novel ideas are used in Roaming IP: Roaming ARP, Roaming ping, Local Service Name Resolution, Roaming directory, Roaming motion detection and two-phase handoff. In the second half of the thesis, an architecture and implementation of Roaming IP is presented. Lastly, experiment results, conclusions and areas of future study are provided.

Många vill ta del av de fördelar som den nya tekniken har i form av ny funktionalitet och minskade kostnader. Men att migrera telefoni till datanät medför både nya möjligheter men också nya utmaningar. I den här rapporten undersöks hur Asterisk kan användas som ett bra IP-PBX alternativ. Rapporten behandlar även säkerheten i att ansluta ett system med Asterisk till internet genom intrusionstester som utförs på systemet i grundkonfiguration. Dessa tester resulterar i rekommendationer om hur systemet kan konfigureras för att hålla en hög säkerhetsnivå.
The usage of IP-telephony has increased in recent past and the market is expected to continue to grow globally. Many want to take part in the advantages that the new technology brings in form of functionality and reduced costs. But to migrate telephony to data networks brings both new possibilities but also new challenges. This report examines how Asterisk can be used as a good IP-PBX alternative. The report also addresses the security aspect of connecting a system based on Asterisk to the internet through conducting intrusion tests on the system in standard configuration. These tests result in recommendations on how the system can be configured to keep a high security standard.

IP-telefoni etablerar sig alltmer i takt med teknologins framsteg men tekniken har och har haft svårigheter att etablera sig på marknaden då människor av olika anledningar inte väljer att använda sig av IP-telefoni. Detta examensarbete försöker reda ut de faktorer som påverkar kundernas beslut att välja byta eller att inte byta till IP-telefoni. Här diskuteras den teoretiska bakgrunden till acceptansen av ny teknik, i det här fallet IP-telefoni. Studien bygger på en kvantitativ metodansats där ett urval av boende i Stockholmsregionen har besvarat ett frågeformulär. Resultat av denna studie visar på några faktorer som påverkar kundernas beslut när det kommer till valet av telefoni. Hit hör exempelvis bristande kunskaper om IP-telefoni. Den ursprungliga hypotesen som detta examensarbete har utgått ifrån, nämligen att det är de äldre som är mindre benägna att använda sig av IP-telefoni, har visat sig inte stämma.
IP-telephony is continuously gaining larger market share but it has had and has difficulties being established in this market because one or another reason customers are not willing to switch to using IP-telephony. This thesis is to give a hint of the different reasons why customers are not or are willing to switch to using IP-telephony. Furthermore gives an insight in the theoretical background to accepting of new technologies in this case the IP-telephony. The thesis is done using a quantitative approach where a random group of the inhabitants living in the Stockholm region have been questioned to answer a survey. The thesis proofs different factors from the thesis point of view that has an impact on customers choice of telephony option for example the lack of knowledge regarding IP-telephony is suggested. The hypothesis that this thesis is based on, that the older population is not willing to use IP telephony, has proven to be wrong.

Genom att skapa nätverkskartor som grafiskt beskriver ett IP-nätverk kan arbetet med att övervaka och felsöka det underlättas. Telenors svenska nätverksövervakning har utvecklat ett system för att automatiskt generera nätverkskartor i formatet SVG. De har ställt frågan om det går att göra dessa interaktiva och koppla ihop dem med befintliga verktygsprogram. Denna rapport visar exempel på tekniker, baserade på öppen källkod och öppna standarder, som kan användas för att utveckla ett system som gör nätverkskartor i dokumentformatet SVG interaktiva i en webbläsare. Problemet att göra nätverkskartorna interaktiva analyseras och olika lösningsalternativ tas fram och jämförs med varandra. Ett system baserat på öppen mjukvara och öppna standarder utvecklas för att visa hur de redovisade teknikerna kan användas i praktiken. Systemets arkitektur beskrivs i tre systemvyer. Nätverkskartorna berikas med bindningar mellan händelser i webbläsaren och JavaScript-funktioner genom att transformera dem med XSLT. Användargränssnittet utgörs av SVG-objekt och JavaScript varifrån det går att asynkront anropa program på en webbserver. Systemet saknar kopplingar till Telenors verktygsprogram. Flera CGI-skript skapas som visar att det från webbservern går att anropa externa program. Det finns inga funktionella begränsningar som hindrar systemet från att kopplas ihop med verktygsprogrammen. Det implementerade systemet kan användas som en grund för att vidareutveckla ett mer komplett system för interaktiv visualisering av IP-nätverk. Systemets funktionalitet avgränsades och har enabart utvecklats för att fungera väl i webbläsaren Firefox. Om systemet ska användas i skarp miljö måste det impementeras stöd för de populäraste webbläsarna. Systemet innehåller inga funktioner rörande säkerhet, till exempel saknas krypterad förbindelse mellan klient och server. Rapporten avslutas med test och utvärdering av systemet och förslag ges på hur det kan förbättras.

Projektet har till syfte att undersöka den revolutionerande tekniken bakom IP-telefoni. Eftersom tekniken är relativt ung så finns det fortfarande mycket att lära om hur det fungerar och hur den används. Projektet behandlar fördelar och nackdelar samt vilka hot som finns och hur man kan känna sig säker när man använder IP-telefoni till vardags. Det primära objektivet med projektet är att få en helhetsbild och förstå hur tekniken verkligen fungerar. Vidare behandlas telefonens historia då det är viktigt att se var tekniken har sina rötter och hur den utvecklats sedan dess. Som en röd tråd från telefonens teknologi och det publika telefonnätets rötter görs en jämförelse mellan de två teknologierna för att se skillanderna och förmodade fördelar och nackdelar med de båda systemen. Olika sorters protokoll som har ett nära förhållande till IP-telefoni så som SIP, RTP, UDP och IP behandlas. För att få en sanningsenlig bild över hur vardagliga användare upplever IP-telefoni så har en enkätundersökning angående vanor och möjliga problem gjorts hos de anställda på Region Skåne.

The aim of this Masters Thesis project is to give the Swedish National Post and Telecom Agency, Post- och Telestyrelsen (PTS), an updated view on I P Telephony relative to the Swedish consumer market. The basic questions were raised by PTS and the focus is on the relevant topics from the agency’s point of view. PTS is primarily interested in understanding what state IP Telephony is in and furthermore what IP Telephony can be used for in practice. What are the possibilities of different implementations and what will be their advantages and disadvantages? Despite being on the scene for many years, IP Telephony is now on the verge of a break through. With the creation of gateways between IP and PSTN, various IP Telephony devices, and with the introduction of SIP (described in RFC2543) as a standard signalling protocol, perhaps today, IP Telephony has a significant potential on the consumer market. Many argue that 2003 will be the year that IP Telephony blossoms. The fact that anyone can be their own operator, the role of the traditional operator versus the new operators, the separation of content and signalling transmission, as well as the efficient use of bandwidth are some of the topics covered in this report.</p> Due to the introduction of The Electronic Communications Act that comes into effect the 25th of July 2003, replacing The Telecommunications Act and The Radiocommunications Act, much of the focus in this report lies on regulatory issues. However, in order to get an insight in to the regulatory issues it is important to understand the underlying technology of IP Telephony as well as areas such as security, robustness, privacy, and emergency calls. Through a market analysis, an updated overview of the market for IP Telephony will be given, along with plausible future scenarios. This report will provide the reader with answers not by focusing on the theoretical details of the technology itself, but rather in terms of it’s practical use and limitations.
Syftet med denna rapport är att ge Post- och Telestyrelsen (PTS) en uppdaterad bild av den svenska IP-telefonimarknaden för privatpersoner. Då examensarbetet utfördes för PTS togs de grundläggande frågeställningarna fram av myndigheten och fokus för examensarbetet lades således på ämnen relevanta för PTS. Trots att IP-telefoni har varit på tapeten i flera år, har tekniken ännu inte haft sitt genombrott på privatmarknaden. Existensen av slussar mellan IP och PSTN, samt utvecklingen av IP-telefoniutrustning och standardiserade protokoll (såsom SIP beskriven i RFC2543), har givit IP-telefoni förutsättningen att ta en signifikant roll på den svenska privatmarknaden. Många anser att 2003 är året då IP-telefoni kommer att ha sitt genombrott. Utvecklingen och ändringen av den traditionella operatörsrollen, separationen av signaltrafik och samtalstrafik samt den effektiva och variabla användningen av bandbredd, är några av de faktorer som ger upphov till spännande frågeställningar. Voice over IP (VoIP) can be defined as the ability to make phone calls and to send faxes (i.e., to do everything we can do today with the Public Switched Telephone Network, PSTN) over IP−based data networks with a suitable quality of service and potentially a superior cost/benefit ratio. There is a desire to provide (VoIP) with the suitable security without effecting the performance of this technology. This becomes even more important when VoIP utilizes wireless technologies as the data networks (such as Wireless Local Area Networks, WLAN), given the bandwidth and other constraints of wireless environments, and the data processing costs of the security mechanisms. As for many other (secure) applications, we should consider the security in Mobile VoIP as a chain, where every link, from the secure establishment to the secure termination of a call, must be secure in order to maintain the security of the entire process. This document presents a solution to these issues, providing a secure model for Mobile VoIP that minimizes the processing costs and the bandwidth consumption. This is mainly achieved by making use of high− throughput, low packet expansion security protocols (such as the Secure Real−Time Protocol, SRTP); and high−speed encryption algorithms (such as the Advanced Encryption Standard, AES). In the thesis I describe in detail the problem and its alternative solutions. I also describe in detail the selected solution and the protocols and mechanisms this solution utilizes, such as the Transport Layer Security (TLS) for securing the Session Initiation Protocol (SIP), the Real−Time Protocol (RTP) profile Secure Real−Time Protocol (SRTP) for securing the media data transport , and the Multimedia Internet KEYing (MIKEY) as the key−management protocol. Moreover, an implementation of SRTP, called MINIsrtp, is also provided. The oral presentation will provide an overview of these topics, with an in depth examination of those parts which were the most significant or unexpectedly difficult. Regarding my implementation, evaluation, and testing of the model, this project in mainly focused on the security for the media stream (SRTP). However, thorough theoretical work has also been performed and will be presented, which includes other aspects, such as the establishment and termination of the call (using SIP) and the key−management protocol (MIKEY).
Voice over IP (VoIP) kan defineras som förmågan att göra ett telefonsamtal och att skicka fax (eller att göraallting som man idag kan göra över det publika telefonnätet) över ett IP−baserat nätverk med en passande kvalitet och till lägre kostnad, alternativt större nytta. VoIP måste tillhandahållas med nödvändiga säkerhetstjänster utan att teknikens prestanta påverkas. Detta blir allt viktigare när VoIP används över trådlösa länktekniker (såsom trådlösa lokala nätverk, WLAN), givet dessa länkars begränsade bandbredd och den bearbetningkraft som krävs för att exekvera säkerhetsmekanismerna. Vi måste tänka på VoIPs säkerhet likt en kedja där inte någon länk, från säker uppkoppling till säker nedkoppling, får fallera för att erhålla en säker process. I detta dokument presenteras en lösning på detta problem och innefattar en säker modell för Mobile VoIP som minimerar bearbetningskostnaderna och bandbreddsutnyttjandet. Detta erhålls huvudsakligen genom utnyttjande av säkerhetsprotokoll med hög genomströmning och låg paketexpansion, såsom "Secure Real− time Protocol" (SRTP), och av krypteringsprotokoll med hög hastighet, såsom "Advanced Encryption Standard" (AES). Traditional telephone conferencing has been accomplished by way of a centralized conference bridge. An Internet Protocol (IP)-based conference bridge is subject to speech distortions and substantial computational demands due to the tandem arrangement of high compression speech codecs. Decentralized architectures avoid the speech distortions and delay, but lack strong control and have a key dependence on silence suppression for endpoint scalability. One solution is to use centralized speaker selection and forwarding, and decentralized decoding and mixing. This approach eliminates the problem of tandem encodings and maintains tight control, thereby improving the speech quality and scalability of the conference. This thesis considers design options and solutions for this model, and evaluates performance through live conferences with real conferees. Conferees found the speaker selection of the new conference model to be transparent, and strongly preferred the resulting speech quality to that of a centralized IP-based conference bridge.

The initial rapid expansion of the Internet, in terms of complexity and number of hosts, was followed by an increased interest in its overall parameters and the quality the network offers. This growth has led, in the first instance, to extensive research in the area of network monitoring, in order to better understand the characteristics of the current Internet. In parallel, studies were made in the area of protocol performance modelling, aiming to estimate the performance of various Internet applications. A key goal of this research project was the analysis of current Internet traffic performance from a dual perspective: monitoring and prediction. In order to achieve this, the study has three main phases. It starts by describing the relationship between data transfer performance and network conditions, a relationship that proves to be critical when studying application performance. The next phase proposes a novel architecture of inferring network conditions and transfer parameters using captured traffic analysis. The final phase describes a novel alternative to current TCP (Transmission Control Protocol) models, which provides the relationship between network, data transfer, and client characteristics on one side, and the resulting TCP performance on the other, while accounting for the features of current Internet transfers. The proposed inference analysis method for network and transfer parameters uses online nonintrusive monitoring of captured traffic from a single point. This technique overcomes limitations of prior approaches that are typically geared towards intrusive and/or dual-point offline analysis. The method includes several novel aspects, such as TCP timestamp analysis, which allows bottleneck bandwidth inference and more accurate receiver-based parameter measurement, which are not possible using traditional acknowledgment-based inference. The the results of the traffic analysis determine the location of the eventual degradations in network conditions relative to the position of the monitoring point. The proposed monitoring framework infers the performance parameters of network paths conditions transited by the analysed traffic, subject to the position of the monitoring point, and it can be used as a starting point in pro-active network management. The TCP performance prediction model is based on the observation that current, potentially unknown, TCP implementations, as well as connection characteristics, are too complex for a mathematical model. The model proposed in this thesis uses an artificial intelligence-based analysis method to establish the relationship between the parameters that influence the evolution of the TCP transfers and the resulting performance of those transfers. Based on preliminary tests of classification and function approximation algorithms, a neural network analysis approach was preferred due to its prediction accuracy. Both the monitoring method and the prediction model are validated using a combination of traffic traces, ranging from synthetic transfers/environments, produced using a network simulator/emulator, to traces produced using a script-based, controlled client and uncontrolled traces, both using real Internet traffic. The validation tests indicate that the proposed approaches provide better accuracy in terms of inferring network conditions and predicting transfer performance in comparison with previous methods. The non-intrusive analysis of the real network traces provides comprehensive information on the current Internet characteristics, indicating low-loss, low-delay, and high-bottleneck bandwidth conditions for the majority of the studied paths. Overall, this study provides a method for inferring the characteristics of Internet paths based on traffic analysis, an efficient methodology for predicting TCP transfer performance, and a firm basis for future research in the areas of traffic analysis and performance modelling.
